ANALEI — North Shore music store Hanalei Strings donated a new ukulele to a victim of the California fires. “Our community understands loss, as the hurricanes have hit us very hard in the past, and many of us lost everything,” said Tora Smart, co-owner of Hanalei Strings. One customer in the store, Kathleen Brown, was vacationing in Kauai and waiting for updates of wildfires burning across her hometown in Santa Rosa. While visiting, she rented a ukulele from Hanalei Strings and made a connection with Smart. “One of my coworkers, Bobbi Donovan, who lost her home to the fires, was only able to take a framed

photo of her wedding and the clothes on her back,” Brown said. “She happened to mention she was unable to rescue her ukuleles.” Donovan, whose home burned down on Oct. 10, is a phlebotomist at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hos-
pital, married with three daughters and studying to become a nurse. She would often play ukulele on her lunch break in the ambulance bay. “When we landed in Kauai on the 9th of October, I burst into tears as I opened

my phone and read about the devastation in Sonoma County and surrounding area,” Brown said. “My sisters cheered my up by purchasing ukuleles and showing much enthusiasm about learning. As they played, I longed to play too. So we decided I should rent one while I was there.” Brown went into Hanalei Strings that evening and met Smart, who pulled out a new Makala ukulele to rent. When she looked at Brown’s license, her heart sank. “There has been an outpouring of help from various businesses in the community, and the recognition on social media is huge,” Brown said. “It would be so cool to have that outreach come as far as Hawaii.” Smart acknowledged
community lessons and hosts performances by local musicians and international guests. The store offers ukuleles, handmade instruments, vintage steel guitars and musical accessories. “I’m grateful for the generosity of Hanalei Strings,” Donovan said. “I’m grateful
that we have family, friends and complete strangers near and far who are surrounding our family and reminding us that we are not alone in this.” “I’m going to keep strumming, find my stride and enjoy the adventure,” she added.

Brown’s heart-felt request and told her to keep the rented ukulele and to deliver it to her friend impacted by the fires. “Gifting an ukulele to someone who has lost all material possessions, including her beloved ukuleles, due to the California wildfires, is our honor,” Smart said. “Mahalo

At the end of the night, guests took home personalized recipe cards of Chef Choy’s favorites to continue the culinary adventure. “When we were in Japan,” Art Umezu, representing Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., said. “People found out we were from Hawaii and always, one of the first questions they ask was, ‘You know Sam Choy?’ He is famous.” Umezu offered a proclamation declaring Oct. 20 as Sam Choy Day acknowledging the launch of the cooking series at the Koloa Landing. “I got Makena to watch Brolie at galerie 103,” said Bruna Stude. “I met Sam Choy on my flight back and he invited me to come.” Stude was seated in one of the preferred seating up close to the demonstration table containing a completed aromatic bowl of poke and was able to get a photo with the chef who oversees the food

Seating was limited to a hundred people in the cozy quarters of the Holoholo Grill, and guests overflowed to the second seating. “Normally, I don’t come out for these types of events,” said Kenny Ishii of the Ono Family Restaurant in Kapaa. “But this is special. Sam tells everyone I don’t come out after 5:30 p.m., but I had to come see what he was cooking.” A spokesperson for Choy of Cooking said there are plans for future events, including bringing in other chefs and possibly taking the demonstrations to other destinations. Cost for the recent Choy of Cookin was $55 per adult, $28 for kids ages 5 through 14, and free for kids under 5 years old. Choy is a four-time nominee for the James Beard Best Pacific Regional chef award, and the recipient of the James Beard/Gallo of Sonoma American Classics award. He has 11 cookbooks and has frequent appearances on the Food Network programs.

REVIEW: AN EDGELESS SATIRE IN GEORGE CLOONEY’S ‘SUBURBICON’ T
he perfect veneer of 1950s suburban life is just a mask for the deep rot and hypocrisy festering underneath the trimmed lawns in George Clooney’s “Suburbicon,” a derivative and somewhat edgeless satire with some compelling perfor-
mances nonetheless. Clooney directs a script credited to Joel and Ethan Coen, himself and Grant Heslov about a model community, Suburbicon, that promises a perfect suburban existence: a parcel of property for all, clean and well-stocked

grocery stores, no traffic and friendly neighbors. But there’s a catch and it is skin deep. This is a problem when the Meyers family (Karimah Westbrook, Leith M. Burke and Tony Espinosa) moves to town. They are black, you see, and the rest of the community is not thrilled about it — eyebrows are raised, meetings are held (with interchangeable middle aged white men in flat top haircuts and wirerimmed glasses shouting at one another through Dutch angle shots). Crowds start to gather outside of the Meyers house until it becomes an all-out mob. The plight of the Meyers

but it brings a fair amount of intrigue and terrific side characters into the strange orbit of the milquetoast Gardner. There’s Gary Basaraba as the empathetic Uncle Mitch, a lumbering and sweet presence who just wants to look after his nephew Nicky. Oscar Isaac, too, steals the show in a brief appearance as a three-steps-ahead insurance agent. Westbrook does wonders as Mrs. Meyers with not much screen time or dialogue, especially in a particularly upsetting scene in a grocery store where a store manager tells her that the price of milk is $20 for her. And the young Jupe proves to be a fantastic and compelling find, carrying much of the film as the hyper-vigilant kid who is watching his world unravel and doing something about it. The leads are a little more underwhelming, which is perhaps a problem of the script. Damon plays Gardner as a kind of quiet everyman, the type who recedes into the background and goes
unnoticed most of the time. Moore is more over-the-top, especially as the sister-in-law Margaret, who strains to be the perfect 50s woman. There are times when they’re allowed to play a bit with quirky dialogue that I would assume is thanks to the Coens, like an amusing discussion about Aruba, but these moments are fewer than you might imagine from a Coen-crafted script. Of all the periods that Clooney could have chosen to skewer, it feels almost toothless to take on 50s suburbia, though. Certainly there are meant to be parallels with today, but it is too obvious to be particularly subversive or revealing, and doesn’t even go far enough to satirize the hypocritical social mores of the time. Thus you’re left with just the plot, which moves along in a fairly compelling, if predictable way. But what’s the point of all this talent and originality and freedom if it’s going to feel so much like something we’ve already seen before?
