J
oan Baez, “Whistle Down the Wind” (Bobolink/ Razor & Tie) Nearly 10 years on from her last studio album, Joan Baez delivers another pearl, 10 deeply felt interpretations about the human condition and the state of the world. Baez’s voice is in fine form and if her range now is, unsurprisingly, more earth angel than angelic, it serves to enhance her expressiveness, the depth of the lyrics and the strength of the melodies. Some of the songwriters, like Tom Waits, Kathleen Brennan and Eliza Gilkyson, also contributed to “Day After Tomorrow,” the 2008 album produced by Steve Earle that’s like a soul mate
of this one, shepherded by Joe Henry. The Waits/Brennan title track and their “Last Leaf” are typically full of captivating images and a few lines, like one about Dwight Eisenhower, provide some
moments of comic relief. Baez can be mischievously funny in interviews, but not here. “Another World,” from Anohni, is one of the most disconsolate tracks — “I need another world/This
one’s nearly gone” — while “The President Sang Amazing Grace,” Zoe Mulford’s reflection on the 2015 Charleston church shooting, is one of the most moving. Henry’s own “Civil War” seems both personal and universal while Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “The Things That We Are Made Of” is deeply poetic with a glimmer of hope. “Silver Blade,” one of Josh Ritter’s two contributions, is a self-defense murder ballad where, unlike the motherly protection provided in “Silver Dagger” from Baez’s 1960 debut, the protagonist can take care of herself. Baez will be presenting “Whistle Down the Wind” on what’s meant to be her last extended tour. It’s a strong album for a farewell, as representative of her talents as of the times.

xperience two of rock ‘n roll history’s most iconic legends performing their classic rock hits on Kauai. The Edgar Winter Group and The Rick Derringer Band are coming to Kauai during their four-island concert tour. This double-billed show features the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers in “Still Alive And Well” — A Tribute to Johnny Winter Hawaii Tour 2018. “Music is a lot more than just the beauty of harmony and rhythm and melody,” Edgar Winter said. “It is a positive force that can transcend boundaries and reach out and really bring people together.” The concert is tonight at Kauai Beach Resort’s Jasmine Ballroom. Doors open at 6 and show begins at 7. Rick Derringer has played with both Johnny and Edgar Winter many times, producing every gold and platinum record they’ve put out. “I’ve enjoyed producing Edgar’s records and playing with him over the years,” Derringer said. “It’s going to be great, once again a

reunion for four shows in Hawaii.” Legendary musician Winter is best known for his million-selling hit singles “Frankenstein”and “Free Ride” featured on “They Only Come Out at Night” album, certified gold in April 1973 and double platinum in November 1986. Winter invented the keyboard body strap that allows freedom to move around on stage during his multi-instrument high-energy performances. He was also the first artist to feature a synthesizer as the main instrument in a song, opening a world of possibilities with experimentation and sound. His music has encompassed many genres of music, including rock, jazz, blues and pop. With over 20 albums and numerous collaborative efforts to his credit, he (along with his late brother Johnny) was one of the most popular recording artists of the ‘70s. “I enjoyed figuring out SEE AFFAIR, PAGE 3

all the arrangements of the songs and showing everybody what to play,” Winter said. “I thought of myself as a serious musician; thankfully I’ve gotten over that.” Winter’s live music is always evolving, stretching his skill and imagination to remain on the cutting edge. Joining him on this tour is fellow rock legend Derringer, who started playing guitar when he was 9 years old. “And for a couple of years before that I used an acoustic guitar as a toy just to hit my brother over the head with it,” he said. As a member of The McCoys, Derringer had the number one 1965 hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which knocked the Beatles out of their number one spot on billboard that year. His solo smashes were “Rock And Roll Hootchie Koo,” “Still Alive And Well” and “Teenage Love Affair.” The McCoys had enjoyed four years of successful tour-
ing, when Derringer merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969. “What I enjoy most is going out and playing in front of people doing live concerts, and that’s what we’re looking forward to in Hawaii,” Derringer said. “During the concerts we like to tell all the people about where the songs came from and people I’ve played with.” “A lot of people work and go to their jobs everyday, saying they can’t wait to retire. In my case, I go to my job, and it happens to be something I love to do. So I do not look forward to retiring, and I will do this as long as I can.” Guitarist/songwriter Derringer is a rock/blues icon who also produces records for mega stars including Cyndi Lauper, Barbra Streisand, Meat Loaf, Kiss and Bette Midler. Derringer appeared on numerous albums with artists Alice Cooper, Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan. “I want people to have a good time, that’s the message I share,” Derringer said.
“People have problems and troubles and illnesses; people have all kinds of things going on in their lives. A TASTY VOYAGE
Restaurant at Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach offers everything one could want
N
estled in the rich blue of the Pacific Ocean, Kauai is a paradise unlike any other on Earth and throughout this rich island one need not look far to discover its many hidden gems, one of these being the restaurant Voyager Lanai Dining. Although I I heard many good things about the restaurant at Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach, I knew I needed to see it for myself. So on a warm evening I decided to sail to over to Kapaa and take my taste buds on a voyage. While I expected luxury; I was captivated by the warm amber

AVERIE SOTO TGIFR!DAY lighting and cream colored walls of the restaurant. The atmosphere seems to envelop me in comfort. It took almost no time at all for me to be seated and as I sat at a table on the open terrace of the restaurant, the Hawaiian music that played made my experience all the more enjoyable. The sight of the ocean in the distance and the dark night sky above also made for a visual treat. However, what truly made my evening pleasant was the kindness
and efficient behavior of the waiter who assisted me. After placing sweet rolls before me with butter, he explained the specials and gave me time to peruse the menu. Being that this was my first time visiting the restaurant, I was unsure of what to try. Descriptions of the marinated grilled chicken and Mongolian pork chop were deliciously written but I found the perfect dish at the bottom of the menu: the Lobster Gnocchi. As I read the dishes features I couldn’t help but laugh as I
remembered my dad teasing me about how much I liked lobster, which is something I’ll probably never outgrow. My waiter returned promptly and after I placed my order it didn’t take long for the food to be placed before me. I thought I was in heaven from the sight and smell of the gnocchi. Cheesy pasta shells floated softly in a sea of rich cream sauce with chunks of North Atlantic lobster tail accompanying them. Resting atop the dish in the center of the plate were strips of cheddar cheese, basil and fresh slices of tomato.

I just knew the dish would taste as wonderful as it smelled and I wasn’t disappointed. The soft and thick texture of the pasta shells were complimented beautifully by the savory cheese sauce and only made better the succulent and salty lobster tail. The basil and tomatoes also offered a peppery and sweet aromatic flavor which served to further enhance the meal. I had never tried anything like it and told myself that I would need to come back again.

there is a precise sensation of out-of-body powerlessness and comic absurdity throughout that can only be described as dream-like. And the overall experience
I was ecstatic as I finished dinner but I wasn’t done with the menu just yet, especially since one of the dessert items was a chocolate lava cake. My waiter once again brought the new dish out to me quickly and I was greeted by a beautiful sight. A moat of hot chocolate sauce surrounded the soft, porous bunt shaped cake and oozed out of the dessert’s center. The powdered sugar caramelized on top of the pasty also served to make the dessert look like a mountain in winter. As I took my first bite the powered sugar and the dark chocolate combined beautifully to create a delicious bittersweet taste. The spongy texture of the cake also gave the pastry a highly smooth finish. Although I my plate was soon cleared of the dessert, I couldn’t say the same about dinner. It was in

that moment that I cursed my small stomach. But then, my waiter once again pleasantly surprised me with his proficient manner as he offered to box up my remaining gnocchi. Upon handing me the bill for dinner, the waiter also made note of the restaurant’s kamaina policy and gave me a discount on the feast. As I walked out of the restaurant, dinner in tow, I headed home and couldn’t help but smile as a warmth and happiness spread through me. The Voyager Lanai Dining had offered more than I expected and I told myself that I needed to go again soon. For individuals, couples and families who are looking for an inviting and relaxing atmosphere and great cuisine I recommend sailing over to the Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach in Kapaa. There you’ll find Kauai’s gem the Voyager Lanai Dining; a perfect spot to enjoy a great meal with family and friends.

“Faeries” by the two famous artists, Brian Froud and Alan Lee. Froud and Lee became even more world renown after being hired by Peter Jackson to assist him for “The Lord of the Rings” movies. Their creative talent allows us to glimpse into the land of Faerie, bringing to life the many types of faeries, letting our imaginations run free. A quarter of a century after the first edition’s initial publication, and with more than a million copies in print
worldwide, Brian Froud and Alan Lee’s “Faeries” is considered a fantasy classic, and definitely a regular seller in our bookstore. This newest edition features eight more original pieces of art by both Froud and Lee, as well as the original pencil drawings and watercolors. More than just a reissue, this deluxe revised and updated edition contains essays from both Froud and Lee on the continuing influence of Faeries. There is also
a foreword by bestselling author Jane Yolen. As we went through the book, we felt like little children while turning page after page, agog at the incredible artwork! Although the subject of faeries might be considered for kids, this is not a book full of cute little Tinkerbells. These fairies can be as enchanting as they are frightening! Froud and Lee’s drawings portray the Faerie folk both good and bad, beautiful and bewitching,
mesmerizing and mischievous. As an additional bonus, this edition contains not only the artists’ handwritten notes, it also includes eight frameable prints and a poster! This unique book seems to capture people of all ages. Well… that is the power of

The story is ostensibly about a man, Michael Feldmann (Lior Ashkenazi) and a woman, Daphna Feldmann (Sarah Adler) immediately after they are told that their son, Jonathan, a soldier, has died in the line of duty. Daphna faints at the sight of the military messengers at her door and is taken to her room and sedated. Michael peers down the hallway, stunned and unable to do anything — cry, help, speak. The officers tell him to drink water every hour, get him a glass and set a recurring alarm on his phone to remind him. They tell him what will happen in the
next few days. It is efficient, emotionless and routine, and all while this is happening around him, the camera barely moves from a closeup of Michael’s haunted face. Family members come by unannounced and uninvited and weep in Michael’s arms. But then his aging mother seems unfazed by the news. Occasional dance breaks (really) begin to make as much sense as anything else as we drift along with Michael in this initial state of shock. This whole first section, while beautifully shot, designed and acted, feels a little like wheel spinning in its repetitiveness. What is the point, you wonder. Then the film slaps you awake before it lulls you back to the trance state as it takes you to the remote military outpost where Jonathan (Yonathan Shiray) was stationed and looks back on the past six months of his life there. These scenes at the
darkly funny, haunting and transfixing, even if it doesn’t immediately appear to be adding up to much other than the maddening detachment of military service. On one routine stop, the soldiers make one couple get out of the car. The two people are dressed in formal Lior Ashkenazi in a scene wear and seem to be on from “Foxtrot.” their way somewhere. undreds of people flocked through the Waimea town during the Heritage Ho‘olaule‘a which wrapped up the nine-day 41st annual Waimea Town Celebration that started President’s Day weekend. Hosted by the West Kauai Business and Professional Association, the celebration is one of two signature events for the WKBPA, the other being the Waimea Lighted Parade celebrating the holidays. “I’ve been doing this for 29 years,” said Sandy Vincent of Honolulu. “I started when Stel Pimental was my neighbor in Kapaa, and I keep doing it even after moving to Honolulu.” Besides being a fundraiser for the WKBPA, the Waimea Town Celebration serves as an opportunity to raise money community groups, including schools, hula halau, canoe clubs, and sports teams. “This is such a special event,” said Aunty Geri Kuhia of Los Angeles who came to help Puni Patrick and other organizers. “The people are so nice, and this makes you realize just how special Hawaii is.”
