apanese hula group, Mapuana’s Hula Nanis; Na Hoku Hanohano nominee, Michael Keale and Enka singing sensation, Torao Hikariyama from Oahu are headliners at the second “Ho’onani Kauai Festival: A Celebration of Cross Cultural Dance and Music” on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Courtyard By Marriott at Coconut Beach Resort in Waipouli. The concert is a fundraiser for Kauai Japanese Cultural
Society. Kumu hula Mapuana Kazama will bring 40 dancers from Odawara near the resort town of Atami and Fuji City in Shizuoka near Mt. Fuji. They’ll perform eight group hula and four solo performances. The hula halau will perform to many of Michael Keale’s songs from his two CDs which garnered nomination as best new vocalist at Na Hoku Hanohano awards.
Keale will also perform songs from his new recording including “Makaiwa” and “Hanalei I’m Coming Back To You”. By popular demand, Torao Hikariyama, aka Tevita Apina, from Oahu will perform Japanese enka-style songs that took first place at KZOO karaoke contest five years ago which led to him performing on TV and shows in Japan. (Japanese three stringed instrument); shakuhachi (bamboo flute); tsutsumi (small hand-held drum) and composes songs in Japanese. Torao made his Kauai premiere at Matsuri Kauai Festival in October 2017 which drew standing-room crowd. He’ll have his CD available at Ho’onani Kauai Festival. The event will also feature Kauai’s kane (male) solo hula dance. Ho’onani Kauai Festival will be held at The Paddle Room at Courtyard By Marriott with limited seating. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and show begins at 6. Tickets are $20 general admission and $35 for VIP seating which includes special gifts from Japan. There are limited seats set aside for kupuna (senior citizen 65 and over) at $15, first-come, first-serve basis. outhern-style cooking is not common on Kauai, but one kitchen in Kapaa is cooking up a storm with savory recipes from the South. For years, chef Thomas Fuquay carried a piece of paper in his wallet with the idea of a food truck, called Nom Kauai, written on a piece of paper in his wallet. He was getting ready to attend culinary school, when his wife Alicia got pregnant and the Central Florida couple moved here 10 years ago to start a family. “I realized I was gonna be
a dad and culinary school is like $40,000,” Fuquay said, “so I needed to work and not go into debt.” He posted an advertisement looking for partners or investors and found another couple that liked his vision and financially backed the whole thing. He started operating his big red Nom Kauai food truck in Kapaa in the summer of 2015 and
ran it for two years before outgrowing the space. After a year of fundraising, the talented chef bought the couple out of their shares to gain full ownership of the eatery. Through hard work, love, and passion, he won “Tasting Kauai’s 2016 Coconut Cup” cooking competition, beating several seasoned chefs from renowned local restaurants.

The success continued when Hawaii Magazine awarded the big red truck as one of Kauai’s best burgers. Soon the eatery started receiving national attention. Foodie website, Yelp, named Nom Kauai as one of the top 100 places to eat of all the restaurants on their site for 2017. Then the Food Network

contacted Fuquay about being part of their television show, “Cooks vs. Cons,” a cooking competition where dishes are judged without knowing if the creator is a professional cook or not. The network flew the chef to New York City to film its Season 5: Episode 3 “Meatball Madness,” and he won a $10,000 check for his quality cooking. With the prize money, he was finally able to fund and open Nom Kauai’s new storefront on Jan. 17 at 4-1101 Kuhio Highway next to Big Save Market in the Kapaa Shopping Center. “We’re providing Kauai a really new hip local eatery unlike anything this island has to offer,” Fuquay said. “We specialize in
Southern comfort food.” Their tagline is local ingredients with southern roots. Their juicy oversized burgers are in such high demand on weekends, Fuquay takes regular trips to Medeiros Farms in Kalaheo to buy beef. The eatery gets buns and cinnamon rolls from Passion Bakery Cafe in Kapaa. “We’ve really taken the Hawaiian aspect and Hawaii ingredients and kinda fused those with recipes my grandmother taught me how to cook,” he said. The new restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, as well as Sunday brunch, which has been “insanely busy” Fuquay said.

One of their signature items, selling for $16, is called The Notorios P.I.G., a jalapeno cornbread waffle with a maple-braised pork belly on top. “We braise the pork for six hours in maple syrup, and we make the waffles from scratch,” Fuquay said. Another popular dish is his Southern-style biscuits and gravy, smothered in spicy sausage and bacon gravy then topped with two eggs your way for $12. A HARROWING TRAGEDY IN RUSSIA’S OSCAR NOM ‘LOVELESS’
R
ussia’s foreign language Oscar nominee “Loveless “ is a beautifully shot and elegantly constructed film about an already broken family in a moment of crisis and trag-
edy. They’ve all-but dissolved their toxic relationship and moved on with other partners, Zhenya with an older, wealthier man with a grown daughter, and Boris with a younger, blonder and sweeter woman, who is already well into a pregnancy with his child. Zhenya is selling her Join Us apartment. Boris has moved For Breakfast! in with his new girlfriend. Matvey Novikov, is lanky and blonde and quiet. We barely get a line of dialogue out of him, and yet his performance is unforgettable. One night his parents are arguing over what to do with him, seemingly one-upping each other with their merciless wishes (boarding school, adoption, you name it). What they don’t know, and what we don’t know at first, is that Alyosha can hear them. Then the camera reveals that he’s been there all along. Zvyagintsev spends maybe five seconds on his silently weeping face, but it is five seconds that will haunt you for the remainder of the movie and likely even after. It is maybe the most powerful single shot of the year. Because the next day, after Boris and Zhenya retreat to their new relationships (and make love to their new partners in an extended and uncommonly naturalistic and explicit sequence), Alyosha
goes missing. In fact, by the time Zhenya, who is always looking at her phone, gets the message, he’s been absent from school for two days already. The film at this point becomes a slow-burning police procedural as authorities go through the appropriate steps to try to track down a missing child and the estranged parents attempt to tolerate each other through this process, which they both seem to think of as more of an inconvenience than anything else. This is a film that is so relentlessly cold-hearted that you get the sense that Zhenya and Boris might almost prefer it if their son doesn’t turn up — they are so deeply selfish and resentful of his existence that him being gone would actually allow them both the fresh and baggage-free start they both crave. The Russian setting, out-
side of Moscow, is similarly dreary — an uncomfortable combination of pristine modernity and decay in the grey and cold landscape — and the radio and television broadcast only news of war and destruction. Many have said “Loveless” is a kind of critique of Putin’s Russia which is something that perhaps might not be so obvious to an international audience, especially when the microcosm of the actual plot is so riveting on its own. But it is just another layer in this unrelenting and difficult work of art. And although there are perhaps brief moments of humanity embedded throughout, by the end you can’t wait to get away from the unforgivingly selfish Zhenya and Boris. Whether or not the feeling of despair will dissipate after the credits roll, however, is another question entirely. Proceed with caution.

ore than 200 senior citizens celebrated Valentine’s Day with a western-themed dance, including popular line dancing, when the County of Kauai Division of Parks and Recreation hosted its annual “Sending You Some Love” get-together at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center. The normal venue, Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, is closed due to construction, and the Parks and Recreation took advantage of the expansive lanai area at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center to host the event that featured the versatile music by Limited Edition, an Aloha Friday regular at the Kukui Grove Center, With the help of the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Mana, the Interact Club of Waimea High School, and the staff and volunteers with the Parks and Recreation, kupuna enjoyed a special photo booth, lunch, and lots of love.
