arlier this year, Kate Enoka woke up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep — her dream had taken her to a point of no return. Less than two months later, she opened The Bright Side Gallery, a colorful place displaying mostly surf art in the heart of Hanapepe Town. “I wanted to open the gallery; it was all I could think about,� Enoka said. “I don’t think I had a good night of sleep for another couple of months.� Being a go-getter her whole life — she arrived alone on Kauai at only 17 years old — Enoka worked many different jobs for nearly 20 years, but never owned a business. Kate Enoka opened The Bright Side Gallery in Hanapepe last For the last May. She said her business — a dream fulfilled after five years five years, she of planning — took off from the start and is doing well. wanted to open an art gallery, and had been talking with her husband about it the

whole time. Following that one sleepless night, the pieces fell magically and perfectly into place. She secured the right artists and found a fitting location at a little but bright space at Hanapepe Road — a 10-minute drive from Kalaheo, which was vital for her to still be a dedicated mother to her two young children. By May 17, Enoka pulled all the strings together, and planned a “soft opening� for The Bright Side during Hanapepe’s popular Art Walk Friday evenings. As it turned out, the opening was anything but “soft.� “It was crazy,� said Enoka, adding that a huge crowd — friends, acquaintances, locals, visitors and all their aunties and uncles — showed up for the opening. From that day on, the tiny gallery has been a huge hit, surprising even Enoka, who didn’t expect to do so well. “The Bright Side Gallery has
taken on a life of its own in such a sweet way,� she said. “It’s been that of a more carefree, ‘surfy’ light-hearted vibe but maintaining a fine art quality.� She said she has been fortunate to feature a collection of artists who have inspired her personal life with their simple desire to “live their dream� everyday, so it was natural that she wanted to share their talents with others. “It’s been such a kick when clients come in and feel that intended lightness and actually comment that they can’t help but smile,� Enoka said. “They get it! It’s almost like healing art, since isn’t that what we all need in our lives — more happiness?� This is exactly what she loves about art, “when you fall in love with and acquire a piece that you truly connect with on such a level that you just have to see and feel that feeling everyday,� she said.

And that is what made Enoka to really want to open a gallery, she said. “It’s like falling in love and giving in,� Enoka said. Some of the featured artists include Grant Pecoff, Steven Valiere, Coco, Aaron Haberman, Elizabeth Ashcroft and a few young up-and-coming Kauai artists. As Enoka and her husband see what works, they have a vision for the gallery that continues to evolve but will always stay true to the original vibe, Enoka said. “We have lots of ideas and plans for the direction of the gallery, but are taking it one step at a time,� she said. ince 1990, Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza has been a onestop shop for various pastries, sandwiches, pizza, soups and assorted beverages — 350 ingredients in all. Owners Thomas and Kathleen Pickett originally intended to bake bread. The community, however, yearned for more than just bread and the Picketts accommodated the community’s wishes. “It is what it is today because of what the community wanted,” said Thomas Pickett. “The idea of bread alone changed to breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 350 different ingredients to prepare.” Thomas Pickett has been in restaurants since 1970. He attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York and graduated from their program in 1991. He arrived in Kauai in 1985, when he followed a chef
from California to the Big Island, and from the Big Island he transferred to Princeville. Pickett said the bakery has had 23 years to improve. “We have improved the quality of our ingredients,” Pickett said. “Since then, we’ve been trying to add higher quality ingredients.” The bakery takes the farm-to-table concept seriously, but with a big menu of 350 inventory items, Pickett says, “You can’t obviously make everything you serve (locally-grown from) Kauai.” Regardless, Pickett and his team “take one step at a time and eliminate an old thing then add a new thing.” As an example, he used to buy coconut milk by the pallet from Thailand. “A couple of years ago, we converted to locally-grown coconuts and we actually developed and made our own tools to process the coconuts
to coconut water and coconut milk,” Pickett said, “so we’re using 4,000 locally-grown coconuts a year.” The bakery is also transitioning from buying commercial pesto to growing its own basil and making its own pesto. “We are growing 3,000 pounds of basil a year,” Pickett said. “That allows us to save on commercial packaging, save money and serve higher quality ingredients, because we use 100 percent olive oil and locally-grown macadamia nuts.” As far as local distributors, the bakery uses Kauai Fresh Farms, Jessie Hessney for coconuts, Kailani Farms for lettuce, Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, Kauai Island Honey, LBD Coffee, Princeville Ranch for beef and Kunana Dairy for goat cheese. “I grow all our own papayas for It may not look vegan, but the Mocha Macadamia Nut is a vegan-friendly our smoothies,” Pickett said. “And of cake that sells for $4.99 a slice.

course our bananas, tomatoes, pineapples are locally-grown.� Another thing worth mentioning is the bakery’s pork products. “I went to Alaska last spring and attended a seminar from a retired salami maker from Switzerland, and I began the process of making my own ham, bacon and various kinds of sausages,� Pickett said. “We’re now making 120 pounds of various meats ourselves.� Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza offers foods for sensitive diets. The bakery has a wide range of food that are gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free and vegan. “Not everything is gluten free,� PIckett said. “We have offerings for people with various, sensitive diets.� After Thomas and I talked story, he brought several breakfast items for me to photograph. The Savory Breakfast Turnovers are breakfast items with scrambled eggs, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, seasoning and potatoes. The dough used in the turnover is ciabatta. It runs for $7.95 whole and $3.95 for a half. Guava Macaroons, Rum Balls, Coconut Haupia and Bibingka Cassava are part of the cold desserts menu and range from $2.70 to $3.80.

It’s made with organic noni juice, ginger, olena (turmeric) and Hawaiian chili peppers. Those ingredients are good anti-inflammatory agents. Also, according to the National Institute of Health, “In laboratory studies, noni has shown antioxidant, immune-stimulating, and tumor-fighting properties.� Pickett said when he moved here, he saw local families with jars of rotting noni on their front yard. “I asked about it and they said, ‘It’s a blood purifier,’� Pickett said. “I picked some, made some and it tasted awful.� Over the years, Pickett worked on producing and perfecting his own noni drink.

A word of warning: The inside can be a little cramped, but the food is definitely worth the

“One thing I tried was fermenting it and making beer out of it,� Pickett said. “The quality of the noni is antibacterial/antifungal, so it killed all the yeast I put in.� Instead of having noni rot in a jar, Pickett settled on making the drink fresher, fruitier. “We ripen our fruit off the tree after five days,� Pickett said. “Instead of being rotten, it’s ripe (fruity).� Pickett also grows ginger, olena and Hawaiian chili peppers at his home. “We blend in a small percentage of ginger and chili in the noni tonic,� Pickett said, “then we filter it through a small micron filter and sell it.� Pickett said the name and the final product — Tom’s Super Sonic Noni Tonic — came about four years ago, but before the name came about he sold noni juice for quite some time. Tom’s Super Sonic Noni Tonic sells for $2 a shot or $25 a bottle.

ime flies when you’re not wondering about the welfare of the Smurfs, those diminutive, animated blue-skinned forest-dwellers. Turns out they’ve been just fine since their 2011 big-screen outing, but there’s trouble brewing in their new adventure-comedy that will require their curious blend of wide-eyed optimism and goofy enthusiasm to peacefully resolve. A sequel largely unwarranted other than for box office and promotional purposes, the unimaginatively titled “The Smurfs 2� should have little trouble scaling stratospheric heights similar to its predecessor with undiscriminating young audiences and their chaperones, weary from near-unrelenting summertime caregiving. The occasion of Smurfette’s (Katy Perry) birthday presents the opportunity for her to recall her conflicted origins — rather than a “true-blue� Smurf, she was actually created by the hapless, wannabe evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria), who now intends to kidnap her from her enchanted-forest home to obtain the formula for the magical Smurf essence that Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters) used to originally bestow her with blue-skinned bliss. Once he has the secret, Gargamel plans to power up a host of Naughties, Smurf-sized creatures he’s created, to help him take over the world. So he dispatches his Naughty daughter Vexy (Christina Ricci) to drag Smurfette through a magic portal and into the real world where he can more effectively manipulate her inherent identity issues. Papa Smurf and his mismatched extraction team consisting of Grouchy (George Lopez), Clumsy (Anton Yelchin) and Vanity (John Oliver) will have to portal to the live-action world to reunite in Paris with the sympathetic young family of Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace (Jayma Mays) Winslow, their live-action counterparts from the original movie, if they’re to have any chance of rescuing Smurfette. Returning the movie to the European locale of
the Belgian Smurfs comic-strip originator Pierre Culliford adds some visual interest, with Paris as the backdrop for the Smurfs’ rescue mission, but beyond the classic cityscapes, there’s little innovative in this formulaic follow-up. The Smurfs director Raja Gosnell (“Beverly Hills Chihuahua,� ‘’Scooby Doo�) has built his career with cute-critter pics and other family fare, and his middlebrow track record remains unblemished with the Smurfs’ big-screen return. With a primarily impressionable young target audience, the returning screenwriting team of J. David Stem, David N. Weiss, Jay Scherick and David Ronn, along with Karey Kirkpatrick (“Charlotte’s Web,�‘’Chicken Run�), has no problem frequently repeating lines, gags and life lessons to nearnumbing effect. Beyond a few chuckle-worthy one-liners and some amusing visual comedy, there’s not much to engage adults, although the wee ones should be distracted enough. In his final film role, Jonathan Winters reprises the beneficent Papa Smurf with the requisite twinkle in his voice, but takes a backseat to Perry’s bewildered, wounded and ultimately outraged Smurfette. Harris and Mays, as the parents of a young boy appropriately named Blue (Jacob Tremblay), acquit themselves good-naturedly enough, although it’s Brendan Gleeson as Patrick’s well-intentioned but misunderstood stepfather, Victor Doyle, who really shines in an all-out turn that gleefully showcases his considerable comic gifts. Azaria is equally antic as the incompetent wizard beset by the uneven, if unrelenting, team of Smurf rescuers featuring Lopez, Yelchin and Oliver. With the exception of Gargamel’s awkwardly rendered CGI cat cohort Azrael, the mix of animation and live-action appears fairly seamless in a 3D rendition that helps keep the movie from slipping into the overly saccharine variation favored by the fully animated 1980s TV series.

he fight against genetically modified organisms has evolved and taken the high-art route. Galerie 103 will open “Evolve� Saturday, an exhibit featuring an impressive roster of about 40 local and off-island artists, with proceeds going to four nonprofit organizations against GMOs. “All these artists have graciously donated their work for the exhibition,� said artist Tom Lieber, who is organizing the show. He added he originally offered the artists to take a 25 percent cut from the sales, but this is such a major issue that everyone said, “take it all.� Proceeds will benefit two local organizations, Kauai Rising and Kauai Seed Bank; and two global groups, Ron Finley Projects and Dr. Vandana Shiva’s Navdanya. and all of the events that will be organized will be to raise money for the organizations that are educating the people of the island about the hazards of the GMO developments that are happening on this island.� Lieber, an established artist who lives in Los Angeles and owns a home on Kauai, said he is in a position now where he can access people in the music industry and art world who want to help out in the battle against GMOs. Some of the artists featured in the exhibit include Julian Schnabel, Dustin Yellin, Kat Cowan, Sally French, Licia McDonald, Sabra Kauka and a few young, unknown artists, said Lieber, who will also have one of his pieces in the show. “We’re publicizing it all over the planet as Kauai being the epicenter, the real center of this whole GMO situation,� Lieber said. This battle, he said, is to convince GMO companies to stop modifying food and go back to organic farming. “If I get elected president of the United States, I’m going to make sure there is a water color set in every home and organic
seeds,� said Lieber, joking. Having artwork from artists from all over the world for this exhibit is what thrills Galerie 103 owner Bruna Stude. “Hopefully, we’ll get some sales so we can support these organizations,� said Stude, adding that not all the work will be about GMOs — it’s about artists expressing how they feel about current issues. “And I think the world is full of issues,� she said, laughing. She too will have some of her artwork featured in the exhibit. One of the gems will be a photograph of Elvis Presley taken by a German photographer on Kauai while Presley was filming Blue Hawaii more than 50 years ago. Three women artists from India are excited to be showing their art in the United States. “That’s going to be fantastic,� Lieber said. Having lived on a boat for many years, Stude dropped anchor on Kauai on Sept. 11, 2001 — “I can’t never forget that day� — and said she opened Galerie 103 in 2009 to fill a void on the island.

“I’m an artist myself, I’m a collector, I collected art from a very young age and when I traveled around the world,� she said. “I felt that we needed on Kauai a place to exhibit work.� She said there is a talented group of artists on Kauai, but most of them are not showing their work. Galerie 103 is Stude’s first venture as a gallery owner. The Croatia-born woman said she held many exhibits there so far, from local, Mainland and European artists, and the response from those visiting from metropolitan areas is “tremendous.� “They really love what we’re doing here,� she said. Artists are inspired by their surroundings, and that’s why most of the art seen in resort areas picture mountains, according to Stude. “This art is inspired also by the surroundings, it’s just done in a different way,� she said. “Some of it is more conceptual, some of it is more abstract.� Evolve opens Saturday, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. And the exhibit will be up until Aug. 31. standing ovation and rounds of applause greeted cast members from The Hawaii Children’s Theatre during curtain call Sunday night at Puhi Theatrical Warehouse following one of the group’s last performances of “Les Miserables.� The theater company’s sold-out production of “Les Miserables,� which kicked off on July 18, culminated nearly six weeks worth of rehearsals and years of
waiting to bring the acclaimed musical to the island. Co-producer Debra Blachowiak said the steep price for the rights to produce the popular musical was something the small, community-based theater company could never afford in the past. But the recent release of “Les Miserables� by Universal Studios opened a short window of opportunity for small community theaters, like The
Hawaii Children’s Theatre, to produce their version of the musical at a reduced cost. It was an opportunity, Blachowiak said, she could not turn down. “The response that we’ve been getting has been absolutely amazing,� Blachowiak said after curtain call on Sunday. The last four shows scheduled this weekend are sold out and Blachowiak said there are dozens of people on the waiting list
for those shows.
