a stage veteran on Kauai. “It’s like Mary Poppins evil twin,” she said, laughing. “Into The Woods” presented by HCT’s After Dark program, opened Thursday and runs through Aug. 19 at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. Ed Eaton is directing the 12-member cast, with many playing multiple roles. The musical’s story for the 2014 movie is described like this:
“As the result of the curse of a once-beautiful witch, a baker and his wife are childless. Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch’s beauty. “During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish.” Music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim. Into The Woods was originally directed on Broadway by James Lapine. Now, this is a different
version of the play. For one, it takes places in a library instead of the woods. There’s some improv involved, cast is on stage as the audience when not involved in a scene and there’s a bit of audience involvement, too. It is an adult theme. “I’m so love with what it’s become and how it’s portrayed,” Gaines said. “I think it will show the audience something different and unexpected, which is pretty cool.” Ariana Franks plays CinSEE WOODS, PAGE 6

Rafael’s Aloha Tacos food truck is going head-to-head with six other food trucks including Molokoa Food Co., Dim N Den Sum, Chalupas Kauai, D Green’s BBQ, Full-Filling Crepes and Chip Wrecked. Justin McDaniel of Chip Wrecked said their truck will be slinging Cuban-style nachos with spiraled ham, kalua pork, a homemade Swiss cheese sauce and a honey mustard drizzle. “Our chances are really good that we’re going to win this thing,” McDaniel said. “Everybody loves nachos.” Each food truck’s chef will create one dish for tasting and attendees will be the judges of who makes the best food.
Sweet and savory, the sky is the limit for contest chefs as long as they include the single required ingredient in the challenge — honey from Kauai Nectar Company, which is a new business launching a line of honey and bee products harvested from their 200 local hives. “It’s about promoting local businesses and supporting the food truck community,” said event organizer Jen Schad. The Battle of the Food Trucks is Parkinglot Pa’ina’s first event and the organization has big plans for activities that will support local food trucks and local food production. Proceeds are going to the Hawaii Food Bank — Kauai Branch and to the Kauai Veterans Center Museum. The plan is to start hosting street food nights, gathering food trucks on a monthly basis with music, too. Admission into The Battle of the Food Trucks on Sunday is free, but tickets are
required to taste each of the food trucks’ dishes. You can pay $30 for two tastings, $50 for five tastings, or $100 for a VIP ticket that gives you early admission — 4 p.m. — 10 tastings and more. While all the chefs are rolling up their sleeves for some friendly competition, the chance to get together and share camaraderie is a draw, as well. “I’m just excited to get with some other food trucks who are being creative and doing something that maybe isn’t in their norm,” said Sterling Snyder, of Full-Filling Crepes. He was working out his own dish on Wednesday as well and said he’ll be indulging the sweet tooth with a classic crepe and a few fancy twists. “I’m doing something like a crepe I used to do on my truck,” he said. “Banana peanut butter with honey. We’re lucky to have great honey here and I’m excited to highlight this great product.”

And bonus, the author, Jen Sincero, even came into the bookstore and was pleasantly surprised to find her books featured, and learning that her book was so popular even here on Kauai. The woods are a metaphor for life — the hard parts, the dark parts, the things we don’t like to talk about, the things we drudge through every day. “And it’s actually the thing that unites every character in the show and it’s something that unites every person,” Franks said. In these times when hostility, anger and accusations seem the norm, Into The Woods offers a

when she goes into the woods, she is not afraid to talk to the wolf. Rapunzel has been locked in a tower her whole life and is frightened. Rudinoff is up to the challenge. “I love Into The Woods. I always have,” she said. When Rudinoff was 13, she donned a red cape, found a wooded area and played Little Red Riding Hood, while her sister took pictures. Today, the 15-yearold remains enthralled with the character. “I love Little Red,” she said. “I love her part. She’s witty, adventurous, the spark of life.” Into The Woods has light-hearted scenes early on, and emotional ones as the story progresses. “It really just makes you think, makes you feel,” she said. “It makes you see all different sides of stories people have in life.” Rudinoff said she and the rest of the cast want the audience to leave thinking about their lives, the good and the bad. “We’re hoping to touch each and every audience member,” she said.

he year was 1985 and a group of people got together to hold a parade to celebrate the 150th anniversary of sugar in Hawaii. The small parade was the seed that gave birth to the Koloa Plantation Days celebration that spans 11 days and offers activities, including the historic parade that started everything. Today, the parade and celebration at the Anne Knudsen Park offers classic cars, colorful floats, walking units, and lots of horseback riders. The parade, enhanced by the appearance and performance of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, opened up the gates to the Anne Knudsen Park where the “largest craft fair” covered two tents, and local ethnic foods filled one big tent. Entertainment started with the Tsunami Taiko and included performances by Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala and a guest appearance by Beat Lele.
