Depending on teams she’s watching, Eileen can get pretty worked up, and there’s no shortage of emotion, with plenty of screaming and yelling and cheering. “My husband says the whole neighborhood can hear me,” she said. The Super Bowl is big for the Rapozos. One year, they set up a tent in their yard, roasted turkey and had legions of family and friends over. “One side was for the Bengals and one side was for the 49ers,” Eileen said. The 49ers pulled out a 20-16 win in that 1989 Super Bowl, considered a classic. More recently, they’ve started watching the big game at their son’s home, where a big-screen TV is in the family room. whether she’ll be cheering for the Rams or the Patriots on Sunday. She said for many, Pats QB Tom Brady is easy not to like, but she said you have to give him credit. “A lot of people don’t like the Patriots, but you know what, give the guy a break,” Rapozo said. “He’s a fantastic quarterback.” Luck, along with football fever, runs in the Rapozo family. Eileen’s mother, Frances Carreira, won a trip for two to Vegas and $500 last year when her name was drawn in August from more than 1,000 ballots that were turned in for TGI’s popular Best of Kauai special section. The 91-year-old said it was first time she’s won anything, and was excited when TGI called to tell her the good news. Daughter Charlotte Rapozo joined her mom for the excursion that included airfare and a hotel stay.
They went in mid-January. Eileen and sister Pat held some fundraisers — like selling smoked meat — to cover trip costs, and they went along, too, a few more of their ohana met them there, and they had a mini family reunion. “It was a great time,” Eileen said, adding she and Pat landed terrific deals on their airfare, hotel and food. For the 2016-17 football season, that same Charlotte Rapozo was a weekly winner early in the season in The Garden Island’s Football Fever campaign, won $250, and had her picture in the island’s daily paper. In the final Football Fever drawing for the grand prize, Charlotte Rapozo won. She, too, screamed when she learned of her good fortune, and later took her mom to Vegas. It was Charlotte’s first season participating in TGI’s Football Fever. Charlotte’s son, Daniel, was a weekly winner, too, that season, and took home $250. “We’ve been lucky, for sure,” Eileen Rapozo said.
In Vegas, Eileen enjoys the music and entertainment. She likes to play the slot machines, but every now and then she ventures over to the Wheel of Fortune and puts in $20. Win or lose, that’s it. “I limit myself,” she said. “When it takes my money, I say, ‘You ain’t getting no more money from me.’” Rapozo hopes to use her free trip to go to Vegas during the Academy of Country Music Awards. She’s a huge country music fan, and her bucket list includes seeing superstars Reba McEntire and/or Shania Twain perform. About five years ago, courtesy of a surprise gift from her granddaughter Chantel, Rapozo got to see her favorite country musician, Alan Jackson, perform in Honolulu. She said in the past, she always played Alan Jackson music while driving to Koloa for hula. “And she never forgot that,” Rapozo said. “So when she found out he was coming to Honolulu, she bought me a ticket.” In case anyone wants

T
he first impression of Monico’s Taqueria Kauai might not be the best. Parking. Because the spaces in the parking lot are for more than one business and are more for compact cars than larger vehicles, it can be a tight squeeze, and some SUV drivers find that annoying. They might even give up and leave. But don’t. Go ahead, park in that small spot, take the short walk to the front door, because what’s inside is worth it. You will not be disappointed. This restaurant at 4-733 Kuhio Highway tucked in near the fire station offers fresh authentic Mexican food from 5 to 9 for dinner and 11 to 3 for lunch, Tuesday through Sunday. On our recent visit Sunday night, we were seated promptly on the lanai on a cool evening, with the setting sun casting a pleasant glow. A bowl of complimentary chips and salsa quickly arrived at the table, and within minutes of being ordered, our watiress brought out the bottle of wine for my wife and two friends. Then came the main attraction. Mind you, the food isn’t cheap here, but it is good. Very good. The veggie chimichanga was $16.95. Other items were in the same range. The chicken quesadilla was also $16.95, as was the

enchiladas mole and the enchiladas verde. The seafood burritos was $21.95, as was the seafood taco. Fish burritos went for $19.95. The Monico’s special, their version of surf and turf, comes in at $27.95, but is excellent. It includes fresh fish, shrimp and a scallop sauteed with veggies, served over jalapeno crema and chile de arbol sauce, topped with carnitas and pico de gallo, and served with rice, beans and guacamole. You get your choice of corn or flour
tortillas. The dinners are not only fresh and delicious, with local ingredients, they are of generous portions. You will not leave hungry. Presentation is key here, too. They want the food to not only taste good, but look good as well. And it does. Monico’s is a long-time favorite on Kauai, and opened about 10 years ago. well-received, with lunch and dinner times busy and catching the attention of tourists and locals. And the waitress has the service down just right. They visit enough to keep tabs on anything you might need, but not too much, and they don’t disappear into the night and you never seen them again after your food is delivered. The outside seating area is actually quite pleasant, despite the rush of traffic passing by on Kuhio Highway. The palm trees in the pasture next door add to the peaceful ambiance and make you feel as though you’re far away from the city. Sometimes at restaurants, the tables are pressed tightly together and you feel as though you’re part of the conversation of everyone seated around you. Not so at Monico’s. They give you plenty

of space to have a private conversation over your meal. The inside seating is fine, clean and no-nonsense. It covers the basics. The outside offers more of a unique dining experience, so if the sun is shining and you like to be outdoors for dining, sit there. There’s a clean, friendly, seven-seat bar with a big-screen TV, in case it’s drinks you’re after more than food. They don’t take reservations unless you have a party of at least six. Monico’s is a bit of both fine and casual dining, a place to stop by after a day at the beach, or a place to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or just a special occasion. Monico’s takes its work seriously, and it shows in the staff, the food, the setting and the atmosphere. eborah E. Lipstadt was surprised at how hard it was to write her latest book, “Antisemitism: Here and Now” (Schocken Books). A leading authority on the Holocaust, she was used to “skulking in the sewers of anti-Semitism and genocide.” But that was history. What made her latest work so challenging — documenting the recent resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe and America, on the right and the left — was that it was happening now. The end result was well worth it. “Antisemitism: Here and Now” is an indispensable
guide to contextualizing activities as diverse as the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign, also known as BDS. And it’s about as even-handed as it could be, given the disturbing subject matter and the fact that Lipstadt’s strong self-identification as a Jew made the topic intensely personal for her. The book is structured as a series of letters between a Jewish student of hers named Abigail and a colleague named Joe at the law school at Emory University, where Lipstadt is on the faculty. They are fictional characters who are composites of many people she’s had discussions with over the past few years.
The letter format gives the book an urgency that might otherwise be lacking in a scholarly work, although at times, it can seem a little contrived. Lipstadt is best known for being sued for libel by David Irving after calling him a “Holocaust-denier.” She won the case, which was later made into the 2016 film “Denial” starring Rachel Weisz. At the outset Lipstadt expresses her hope that both sides of the political divide will be discomfited by her analysis and conclusions, and they probably will. For instance, she classifies both Donald Trump and Jeremy Corbyn, the head of Britain’s Labour Party, as “antisemitic enablers” — Trump for failing to call out the white supremacists, racists and
anti-Semites who support him and Corbyn for tolerating the anti-Semitism of his political allies. “While Trump is probably not an antisemite,” she says, “enabling antisemites is itself an antisemitic act that causes as much damage as something that comes from an ideological antisemite.” Lipstadt wrapped up the manuscript in August 2018 after noting that pace of anti-Jewish incidents and rhetoric had made it almost impossible to finish. Sadly, she was right. Just weeks after penning her note to readers, a man gunned down 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history. The suspect had a history of posting anti-Semitic vitriol online.

etting the students from the Kapaa Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band to the Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, Calif., is an expensive proposition, said Mary Lardizabal, the program’s director. As a fundraising effort to offset some of the expenses involved in taking the choir and band to the competition, the KMS Choir Booster’s Club hosted Aloha Keiki Fest, featuring an afternoon of keiki talent from around the island. The entertainment lineup was bolstered by crafters, food vendors and activity stations that kept traffic flowing through the Kauai Veterans Center parking lot, where K’s Shave Ice and Treats food truck helped keep the heat in control.
