Mele Mei Kauai brings live local talent, hula to Waimea

AIMEA — A month-long celebration of Hawaii’s music culture is underway with an exciting lineup of Hawaii music performances and concerts statewide. The 8th annual Mele Mei puts the spotlight on local musicians including multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning and Grammy-nominated artists, who will perform at vvenues around Hawaii, as well as in Los Angeles and throughout Japan. Mele Mei will be coming to the historic Waimea Theatre on Saturday with a night of special performances featuring opener, Homestead Band, and headliner, Waipuna with the Kauai debut of their new CD. The three-time Na Hoku award winner, Waipuna, is a collaboration of two talented musicians, Kale Hannahs and Matt Sproat. Their unique sound draws comparisons to their name, which means spring water. SOULS TORMENTED IN SCHRADER’S ‘FIRST REFORMED’ LINDSEY BAHR ASSOCIATED PRESS

arrowing, but with a wry humor, and utterly transporting, Paul Schrader has synthesized his complex religious upbringing with modern anxieties into a trenchant portrait of tormented souls in “First Reformed .” The title is the name of the church in the film, a modest but stately structure in upstate New York that’s older than the United States, but you’d hardly know that it’s nearing its 250th anniversary with the bright white walls and well-preserved pews. First Reformed is led by Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke), a man in his late 40s who drinks too much and cares for himself too little and who has promised to tell the honest truth of himself, his doubts, his anxieties, his shortcomings, even his typos in a handwritten diary for one year, which he’ll burn after the experiment is over. Toller is a solitary man who spends his nights alone with a bottle of whiskey and his thoughts and writing, which we’re invited to access through voiceover. His days aren’t much different, and he barely even gets respite from his own mind while giving sermons — First Reformed

seems to only have about five parishioners, one of whom is his ex-wife. However, she, like most of the town, actually belongs to the local mega-church Abundant Life, run by Pastor Jeffers (Cedric Kyles). Thus it must come as a sort of relief to get a true challenge and an opportunity to work with the people he’s there to serve when one day Mary (Amanda Seyfried) asks Toller to speak with her husband Michael (Philip Ettinger). Michael is a radical environmentalist so certain of the earth’s imminent destruction that he’d rather terminate his wife’s pregnancy than bring a child into a decaying world. (He’s also got a vest outfitted with explosives stashed in
his shop). Although Mary considers herself an environmentalist, she would also like to keep the child and get rid of the vest. As a lifelong churchgoer, she puts her trust in Toller to help. But despite Toller’s sincere efforts, Michael still resorts to suicide soon after in a way that ensures Toller will discover his body. It’s this event that sends Toller down a very different path in the lead up to the 250th anniversary celebration. He begins to question his own faith and belief in hope and the future as it relates to what humans are doing to the earth and the systems around him. Three and a half stars out of our.

On Kauai, you can get ‘em any way you want ‘em TGIFR!DAY

UHI — From the traditional pies at Bobby V’s to the smoked ono and Gorgonzola rosemary sauce pizza at Kilauea Bakery and Pizza, Kauai’s a place to get a slice any way you like it. Pizza Hut will deliver, or you can drop by the Scorpacciata for pepperoni straight out of the truck. Hit up Brick Oven for a happy hour beer with that homemade sauce, or go Italian at Pietro’s. Some locals swear by Costco’s pizza — by the slice or the whole pie — with its open-air dining area. Others prefer the upscale, lowlight atmosphere of a place like Kauai Pasta, with its fresh-daily sauces, dressings and deserts. The competition for a
big bite of the pizza market is fierce on Kauai and a new competitor with a big name has entered the fray: Domino’s. The franchise has added itself to the nearly 20 pizza-slinging shops on the island with a 4,000-squarefoot store in the Hokulei Village Shopping Center. It faces some strong rivals. Brick Oven Pizza has locations in Kalaheo and Kapaa. Harbor Mall is home to Pietro’s Pizza Kauai, owned and operated by Tom Iannucci. Its brick oven was imported from Italy. Hideaways Pizza and Pub offers soups and 12 different types of pizzas with a buildyour own option. They’ve got everything from just a cheese pizza to the sautéed spinach and pear pie with goat cheese. Then there’s Little Caesars
at Kmart, which has a quick slice to go. Many restaurants around Kauai, like Tahiti Nui in Hanalei, include pizza on their menus. There’s good reason for all this fighting for a piece of the pie. According to Pizza Power Report: ◗ Americans eat about 100 acres of pizza each day, or 350 slices per second. ◗ Pizza is about a $45 billion per year industry in the US and an estimated $130 billion worldwide. ◗ There are about 75,000 pizzerias in the United States. ◗ Americans eat about 100 acres of pizza a day or about 350 slices per second. It’s also a growing market. Large pizza chains continued to expand beyond U.S. borders this year, with a focus on nations with rising disposable incomes, according to the Pizza Power Report. Pakistan is the world’s fastest-growing retail market, according to Euromonitor International, with Pizza Hut planning to double its store count in Pakistan to 150 over the next five years. Almost two-thirds of the 200 million people in Pakistan are younger than 30, according to Bloomberg, with disposable incomes doubling since 2010 and 40 percent of household expenditure spent on food. Pizzas in general are an affordable dinner. A large, depending on the restaurant, can range from $15 to
$30. And yes, you can get them the way you want them: Thin or thick crust, hand-tossed, or even a crusted filled with cheese. And, many people consider pizza a healthy meal.

SUMMER COMEDY ‘IBIZA’ IS STREAMING
S
o long a staple of the moviegoing experience, the summer comedy has fallen on hard times. There are hardly any on this season’s release schedule, and one of the more promising candidates — “Ibiza,” starring the terrific Gillian Jacobs and the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Vanessa Bayer — isn’t playing in theaters but is streaming on Netflix. In most ways, “Ibiza” doesn’t differ greatly from the late-arriving post-”Bridesmaids” ilk of raunchy female-led road trip comedies. Jacobs (“Love,”‘’Community”) plays an angst-ridden, single New Yorker named Harper whose intensely cruel, germaphobe boss (the excellent Michaela Watkins) dispatches her to Barcelona on a business trip to land a Sangria client for their public relations company. Harper’s two best friends, Nikki (Bayer) and Leah (Phoebe Robinson of “2 Dope Queens”) insist on coming along. When the normally reticent Harper pursues a DJ love interest (Richard Madden, a.k.a. Robb

Stark on “Game of Thrones”), their European trip takes an impromptu detour to Spain’s nightclub destination. The outline of “Ibiza” isn’t promising. A movie geared around a hot Ibiza DJ sounds like a straight-to-video Zac Efron movie. And finding true love in the EDM-blaring clubs of Ibiza is probably about as likely as discovering the meaning of life on spring break at Lake Havasu. But “Ibiza,” scripted by Lauryn Kahn and directed by Alex Richanbach (both Funny Or Die veterans and disciples of “Ibiza” producer Adam McKay and Will Ferrell) has a loose, natural rhythm
that easily surpasses its cliche framework. And unlike some of its forerunners, “Ibiza” doesn’t feel like it’s stretching to stitch together a few memorable set pieces. It works best when the three are just in a hotel room or the back seat of a cab because the chemistry between the trio is earnestly winning. Jacobs has by now become an expert in sarcastic, wounded, resilient characters, and she holds “Ibiza” together just as surely as she does an episode of “Love,” also a Netflix title. As ludicrous as it

sounds, her budding romance with Madden’s famous DJ comes across as quite genuine; they believably fall in love at first sight, brought together by that evergreen valentine: a crude drawing unknowingly stenciled across Harper’s face. And while the genial Robinson is also a key part of the group, “Ibiza” most belongs to Bayer. In her largest movie role yet, the former “SNL”er (she departed last year after seven seasons) plays the Melissa McCarthy-esque role of hapless sidekick, but with a more subtle and shy comic energy to her physical comedy. She’s always been a standout ensemble performer, but “Ibiza” makes a good argument that Bayer can do more. Whether sunburnt bright red on the Spanish beach or recounting her post-”SNL” Sunday routine, Bayer excels at the comedy of being herself.

If “Ibiza,” a sweet and silly romantic comedy, was on the big screen, it might have pushed itself toward bigger gags. But the smaller scale works well in a genre that increasingly feels like a gross-out scene arms race. Here, Bayer does plenty with a simple hotel bed that she excitedly
jumps on, not realizing it’s two fulls pushed together. “Ibiza,” a Netflix release, is unrated by the Motion Picture Association of America but its language and nudity content would qualify for an “R’’ rating. Running time: 94 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.
tephen King’s new novel, “The Outsider,” opens with witness interviews in a typewriter font, laying out the details of a grisly crime and setting the scene for a detective story. And for the first hundred or so pages, that’s what readers get. Detective Ralph Anderson arrests the respected Little League coach of Flint City, Oklahoma, based on a mountain of evidence that he murdered — maybe even ate? — an 11-year-old boy in a town park. Anderson has the full support of the up-for-re-
election district attorney and seemingly enough DNA in the perp’s van (white and windowless, naturally), all over the crime scene and on the murder weapon. But wait — this is Stephen King, not Raymond Chandler, and there are still 500 pages! Our first clue that the case isn’t all it seems is the suspect himself. Coach Terry Maitland is incredulous at his arrest and speaks to the police and his attorney with the conviction of an innocent man. And that’s when this Stephen King novel really begins. It seems Maitland was indeed at a Tri-State Teachers of English
conference in another city at the time of the murder. Fast forward to the arraignment and the story kicks into another gear. The victim’s older brother guns down Maitland on the courthouse steps and with his dying breath the coach again denies the crime and asks Anderson how he’s going to clear his conscience. More than many King novels, this one tries hard for that understanding. You’ll probably see it in a few years as a Hulu Original or a fivepart miniseries on a channel you’ve never watched before, but until then, do yourself a favor and read the book.

OIPU — The 15th annual Kauai Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was sold out at the Poipu Bay Golf Course, but Mark Perriello, president of the Kauai Chamber, said they were able to get two more golfers into the field playing a four-person modified scramble format with a shotgun start. Russell Hata of Y. Hata and Company, a premier sponsor of the tourney fueling chamber scholarships, flew in from Oahu (as did Jay Higa and Lester Kodama) for the golf that offered a ton of prizes including some for best dressed golfer in team and individual contests. Other prizes were offered for closest to hole for men and women, driving the green on No. 11, a hole in one on No. 17 for $25,000 (other par 3 holes had special prizes), and the team who finished No. 15 adding to the fun while helping the chamber with its scholarship and other operating costs.
