‘My Favorite Things’ 11th annual Kauai Sings Christmas on Saturday
T
he 11th annual Kauai Sings Christmas is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Kilohana Luau Pavilion. “Kauai Sings Christmas is always the event that puts me in the holiday spirit,” said local judge and retired attorney Joe Moss. Kauai Sings is a one to thrice yearly fundraiser for Malama Pono Health Services. The event has raised nearly $300,000 in non-restricted funds for the agency over the past 11 years and
this funding is vital to keeping the agency open and solvent. “So many of our programs, like the women’s clinic or the stop-smoking program are funded by grants with specific uses for the finances,” said Executive Director Mistee Bailey-Myrick. “Those grants don’t allow for basic costs of running the agency like renting our offices or paying the power bill.” She said events like Kauai
Sings and donations from private individuals are necessary to keep a nonprofit health agency like Malama Pono and others in business. iffany Dick of the Aloha Dance Studio will host its holiday recital, “The Greatest Time of the Year,” Sunday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall starting at 2 p.m. Tickets go on sale at the box office starting at 1 p.m. Advance tickets are available at the studio behind Gary’s Service in the Kukui Grove West. “We do recitals twice a year,” Dick said. “The
Greatest Time of the Year is a holiday performance featuring ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary stylings from the dance company which has dancers as young as 3 years old participating.” Dick said this year, she has a lot of Minis joining the company offerings. “They are excited and anxious to show what they can do,” she said. seems Hemingway-like, a throw-back to the days of long ago when writers waxed on about their philosophy on life and everyone bought their books and wanted to be them. I stopped in here after leading a Junior Achievement class at Kapaa High School on a Wednesday morning. Men and women were already there, seated, smiling, talking, seeming to be quite satisfied with life. A corner table was open, so I sat there. The names of “Hemingway’s Breakfasts” made me smile. “The Sun Also Rises.” “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” “The Old Man and the Sea.” “True at First Light.” “Paris.” “Venice.” “Pamplona.” Ah, it make me wish I had a copy of Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast,” a memoir he wrote about life in the Paris in the 1920s. A buddy recommended it. It was just as good as he said. And so is the food, coffee and service at Art Cafe Hemingway, which opened in 2011 and has developed a strong local

following. I was in the mood for easy and cheap, so I ordered from the Hemingway’s Brunch menu. The first item, Muesli, which was oatmeal in milk with yogurt, fruits, nuts and honey for $5, and cup of coffee, Espresso, for $3. Both were excellent. Nice and clean presentation. ongratulations to Stu Burley on being the new Kauai Veterans Council commandant! Burley was sworn in to his new office during the annual Kauai Veterans Council annual Christmas party held at the Kauai Veterans Center before a gathering of veterans and their families. The gathering also served to celebrate Jenni Andersen’s 100th birthday because her actual date comes up on Dec. 28, said Mary Kay Hertog. Andersen was joined by Gabriel Cataluna, who at 104 years old, is the oldest living veteran on Kauai. Andersen is the oldest living female veteran. Charlene Dorsey also took the opportunity to present Anna Lee Broyles, the Miss Kauai Veteran, her credentials of office while Santa (aka Dan Cordes) kept an eye on the cache of presents and giveaways.
