while using her ukulele on two other numbers. Each composer was permitted three numbers, many calling on fellow composers to assist in their respective presentations. Sarah, following a keyboard instrumental by Malakai, called on sister Crystal to help with harmony on one number, getting assistance from
both Andrew and Malakai on another, and turning her portion into a family affair. Admission to the Kauai Music Festival is $170 for the fourday conference, which runs from July 10 to 13 at the Kauai Beach Resort The admission is $195 for the conference, plus two evening concerts. UKOLII — Real-world experiences led to a touching ballard by 12-year-old Janica Pascua Saturday night. Pascua performed the song about never giving up before a near-capacity crowd at Shutters Lounge in the Kauai Beach Resort. In the song she wrote with the aid of her mother, Pascua described her seventh-grade bullying experience. “We have a lot of talented musicians on this island, and this includes songwriters,� said Mike Odo of Kauai Music and Sound in Kapaa. “We created this venue so the young song writers could perform their creations, and in return, get an admission to the upcoming Kauai
Music Festival.� Hosted by Daphne Sanchez, a musician and hostess of the weekly Jam Room event at Kukui Grove Center, the audience was treated to a range of music ranging from the anti-bully-
ing ballard to contemporary hip-hop created by Tom Iannucci. “She has a really soft voice, naturally,� Sanchez said of Pascua, “But when she gets behind the microphone, it’s wow!�

ith a sunset view overlooking Port Allen Harbor, Port Allen Sunset Grill and Bar has what you need to satisfy your taste buds, serving Pacific Rim Cuisine that is tasty and won’t place a burden on your wallet. Since opening shop five years ago, Peng Tay, owner Port Allen Sunset Grill and Bar, has made many friends. Before the interview, he greeted all his regulars with handshakes and stories. “I opened up five years ago because there weren’t that many places on the Westside for people to go and relax,� Tay said. “Here at my place, people come, relax, sing karaoke and have a good time.� Tay was born in Malaysia. He has lived on Kauai for more than 30 years, attended Kaua’i Community College and was a former cook at the Sheraton
and Grand Hyatt. He brings to the table a unique blend of local favorites and Pacific Rim cuisine. “All these recipes are ours,� Tay said. “We use a lot of sweet chili in our food and we always have fresh fish.� Port Allen Sunset Grill and Bar also works with local farmers and fishermen. “We use lettuce, tomato and cucumbers from Kauai Fresh Farm,� Tay said. “We are right by the harbor, so we have local fishermen always bringing us fresh fish.� The seafood they served on my visit was unbelievable as Tay prepared plate after plate of pupus. “Everyone really likes the pupus,� Tay said. “It’s nice to come during happy hour, have one or two drinks and have something light to eat.� Tay served five seafood dishes that were outstanding: The Blackened

Thanks to the gentle poetry of “Up,� the cosmic romance of “WALL-E� and the unlikely artist portrait of “Ratatouille� (not to mention others), the mantle is high for Pixar, a paragon of pop culture. But lately, the studio hasn’t been living up to its uniquely high standard. “Monsters University� follows two subpar efforts, “Cars 2� and “Brave,� both of which lacked Pixar’s usual inventiveness. University� is nevertheless pleasant, amiably animated family entertainment. A big reason is because Wazowski and Billy Crystal remain one of the best toon-voice actor combinations in animation. A lime green ball with spindly appendages, he’s little more than one big eyeball. But it’s Wazowski’s mouth that’s his dominant feature. He’s ceaselessly chipper, with a stand-up’s penchant for sarcasm. He arrives on campus an eager, retainer-mouthed bookworm with his heart set on becoming a star pupil in Monster University’s prestigious and competitive Scare Program, and moving on to his dream career at Monsters, Inc. (Monsters fuel their world by scaring human children through the nighttime portal of closet doors.) The professional scarers are like rock stars in Monstropolis, and Wazowski, blind to his diminutive size and
total lack of fright-inducing menace, dreams of making the big leagues. For Sully (John Goodman), such a future is presumed. He’s “a Sullivan,� a legacy, the son of a famous scarer. Blessed with a powerful roar, he boasts all the natural talent Wazowski lacks. One a jock of privilege, the other a wide-eyed aspirant: Neither can stand the other. But both find themselves kicked out of the Scare Program by the cruel Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), a kind of winged centipede. Shut to the doors of the cool kids frat, Roar Omega Roar (captained well by Nathan Fillion’s chest-pumping Johnny Worthington), Wazowski and Sully have no recourse but to join the motley gang of misfits at Oozma Kappa (“We’re OK!� they shout). Their only way back in is to win the Scare Games, a Harry Potter-like tradition of competing fraternities. If “Monsters, Inc.� was workplace
whimsy, “Monsters University� is campus comedy. Characters — widely varied in both skill sets and biology — are finding their path, often a happy deviation from their expected one. Director Dan Scanlon, a veteran Pixar storyboard artist, populates this collegiate life with rich detail and sly but not forced references. Ultimately, the film (which is preceded by a short, “The Blue Umbrella�) makes a surprisingly sharp lesson on the hard truths of limited talent (giftedness remains an intriguing Pixar theme seen previously in “The Incredibles� and “Ratatouille�), but also of the great value in plucky determination. Pixar’s “Monsters University� might not be as gifted as some of its other movies, but sometimes it’s alright to be OK. “Monsters University,� a Walt Disney release, is rated G. Running time: 103 minutes. Three stars out of four.

auai Voices, a 40-voice choral ensemble, present music of The Classics today and Saturday at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Lihue. The concert begins at 7 p.m. with violinist Aowl Owenplay opening the show today and the Alii Strings on Saturday. The choral concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., with
an eight-part, choir-inthe-round piece by Felix Mendelssohn. “We’re thrilled to celebrate our fifth season with classical favorites from a variety of composers, including Bach, Pachelbel, Lauridsen, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Andrew Lloyd Webber and P.D.Q Bach, among others,� said Artistic Director Randy Leonard,
who has 34 years experience as a soloist and choral director. “Our program is designed to take the audience on a classical musical journey of many different dimensions — from serious, serene and majestic to uplifting, lighthearted and funny. Audience members will have laughs, tears, warmth and chicken skin.�
Members of Kauai Voices also will present solos and duets, interspersed between choral numbers. Founded in 2011, Kauai Voices is a community-based organization. “Our goal is to enhance appreciation of choral music within the community by performing regular concerts as well as to provide musical outreach to schools and organizations,� Leonard said.
“For example, last year we joined a concert with the choral students of Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in Lihue to help them appreciate the benefits choral singing. They learned that it is fun to sing, but that it also builds discipline and cognitive abilities, encourages camaraderie, promotes confidence, improves memory and listening, and enhances

IHUE — Dennis Muffly didn’t just park his 2000 Corvette for folks to see Saturday at the Kukui Grove Center. He popped the hood open to unveil the glimmering engine underneath. “I wanted people to see this,� he said. “�They can always see the car, but not the engine.� Muffly was one of about 70 owners of vintage vehicles who participated in the car show organized by Harvey Maeda of Kauai Classic Cars. Hits from decades ago, like “Sh-Boom Life Could Be a Dream,� and “Runaway� played over the speakers as crowds checked out hot rods and cruisers from years past. George Nitta, host of an automobile radio show on AM 690 in Honolulu, also gave a presentation on gasoline and oil. J.C.
