der of the world, we began our voyage across the Kaulakahi Channel that connects Kaua’i to Niihau. Just minutes into our crossing, a group of bottlenose dolphins gathered in front of the boat and began gallantly leading the way to our next destination. In the distance I could see the island I had only dreamed of visiting and excitement began swelling in my heart. Immediately, my cell phone lost reception and I began to think of what life was like before technology dominated and social media posts became the evidence of a memorable vacation. Instead of looking for a photo opportunity, I embraced living in the moment; it felt good to disconnect and allow time to stand still.
We approached our destination and took a few minutes to explore the rocky, crescent-shaped islet named Lehua, which sits just north of Niihau. We traveled along the ancient volcanic crater, the vessel venturing into a cave they call the Kipuka, seemingly a giant keyhole carved into the cliff. The sunlight came brilliantly shining through the hole and danced on the water. Hundreds of native birds seemed to greet and welcome us to their home, flying overhead and even landing on the vessel to say “Aloha!”. I put on my snorkeling gear and plunged into the crystal-clear, cobalt waters off of Niihau. It felt like a dream, as I swam through underwater cathedrals created by frozen lava formations and saw an
abundance of colorful fish and unique marine life. A brilliant school of yellow tang fish danced all around my face and the visibility was so magnificent I could actually see their little gills fluttering. A large shadow approached and my heart started racing, before quickly realizing it was just an endangered monk seal joining me for a swim. While we did not actually go on Niihau by foot, just being up close and personal more than quenched my thirst for discovery. Q: Is Kauai really home to the wettest place on earth? A: Mount Waialeale averages at least 460 inches of rainfall each year, making it one of the wettest places on the planet.

Trust is their most valuable asset! Robert’s Jewelry has an unusual reputation for NOT trying to make a sale. Since the business began over 70 years ago in quaint Hanapepe town, their primary objective has been to have anyone who walks through their doors leave with a satisfying experience, not to make a sale. The store is now located in downtown Lihue. It’s difficult to find but worth looking for. Their selection and prices of Hawaiian heirloom and other jewelry are unmatched. But the true worth in finding Robert’s Jewelry is discovering their genuine attitude of placing customers’ needs beyond their desire to sell. During its first 40 years, Robert’s had stores in Kauai’s busiest shopping areas following the formula of “location, location and location.” But they learned busy locations weren’t necessarily the best. Having too many customers at once prevented giving the level of service they wanted. Moving to less accessible locations meant less customer traffic, but actually resulted in increased sales. Robert’s customers now search for the store after hearing of its reputation. In an enjoyable, no-pressure setting, customers sense the staff’s desire to inform rather than to sell. There are no commissions on sales because that would be counter-productive to Robert’s belief that good service first ultimately brings more sales. Robert’s prices lower than its competition partly
because they own their buildings and avoid high rents. They also get lower product costs from many vendors because of their steady sales volume. But the biggest reason for their reasonable prices is their belief that providing good value is an integral part of providing good service, and prices are just high enough to make a reasonable profit. However first-time Robert’s customers are often surprised that no additional discounts are given, even with very large purchases. Everyone pays the same price, which are never adjusted just to make the sale. Customers accustomed to bargaining will find their proposals ignored but will still be happy to pay the price… the same low price that everyone else has paid. They may also be understandably apprehensive about paying for jewelry and returning home emptyhanded. Because much of what Robert’s sells is custom-made requiring weeks to manufacture, customers often first see their purchase when the mailman arrives and are relieved and happy to find their jewelry more beautiful than expected. Receiving emails, phone calls and letters of appreciation is a regular event. But Robert’s is still thrilled each time to learn another customer is happy. Owner, Bruce Marston, met his wife Louise in Tahiti when he was a Lt. Colonel serving in the United States Air Force. Bruce was from California, Louise a native of Tubuai ( Austral Islands, French Polynesia) which is just south of Tahiti. Louise is a descendant of Tahiti Royalty in the lineage of King Tomatoa. Bruce and Louise met in Tahiti, fell in love and got married. They decided to move to the beautiful island of Kauai where they opened a small diner. After the restaurant achieved some success, they added a small curio shop adjacent to the restaurant. Many years later Christian, Bruce and Louise’s son, continues the tradition that both locals and visitors cherish. Over the years, Tahiti Nui has had many changes but the one thing that remains constant is the atmosphere –a mix of aloha, good service, great food and infamous drinks that people from over the world have come to love. Over the years, the family has added Tiki Man Pizza, Tahiti Nui Wine Bar and even a Luau… In the back of Tahiti Nui, you’ll find Tiki Man Pizza where the Huli Chicken and Kalua Pork pizza rules. Fisherwood LLC, has opened a Coconut’s Fish Café, franchised restaurant, in Kauai Hawaii. Coconut’s Fish Café is a family-friendly restaurant that serves excellent food with Aloha. To maintain a competitive edge, Coconut’s Fish Cafe provides high-quality, healthy fish served to neighbors, friends and ohana. Each Coconut’s Fish Café has a Hawaiian theme and decor and offers a variety of fresh, healthy and affordable menu options featuring wild-caught fish and authentic Hawaiian ingredients. Coconut’s Fish Café is a relatively new franchise concept. The flagship restaurant was opened in 2009 in Kihei, Hawaii. The huge success of that first restaurant prompted the owner, Mike Phillips to begin franchising. In 2013 a second restaurant was opened in Scottsdale, Arizona. Since that time, 6 additional restaurants have been opened in Arizona, California and Hawaii. A 9th restaurant will open in L.A. in 2018. Each restaurant follows a basic approach to delivering the Coconut’s Fish Café experience to each and every guest. They “wow” the guests with a bright and cheerful interior. They recruit and train cashiers who care about the guest experience and can describe the healthiness, quality and affordability of the product. They train food runners to recommend the “appropriate” way to eat a CFC fish taco to first time diners. Most importantly, they serve food that is prepared fresh each day. The “wow” factor continues with remarkable customer service by greeting each guest and demonstrating a sense of pride in everything they do.
