A Walk for Hope HANAPEPE—The Relay For Life of Kauai will be held April 28-29 at Hanapepe Stadium. The annual fundraiser benefits the American Cancer Society.
“Relay For Life is actually the top fundraising event from a nonprofit that raises money for all cancers,” said Patti Ornellas, senior community development manager for the West Region of American Cancer Society, Inc. “With that, the fundraising dollars, we provide that for research (and) for programs and services for patients and survivors.” The main event of the Relay For Life is a 12-hour walk around the soccer field at Hanapepe Stadium, which goes from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning. “What that embodies is, everybody who is either affected by cancer directly or indirectly, they can walk in the footsteps of a cancer survivor once they hear the words, ‘You have cancer.’” While the walk is free of charge, money is raised through various on-site sales including food booths.
Last year’s Relay For Life raised $224,000, Ornellas said. Those who wish to join the relay can register at www. relayforlife.org/kauaihi. The Relay For Life will also feature a luminaria to honor loved ones who are either battling cancer, have overcome it or those who have lost their bout. “All those luminaria bags, they stay lit for the duration of the event,” Ornellas said. “They’re nicely decorated. It’s pretty emotional just walking around and seeing who’s who.” This year’s featured speaker, or “Voice of Hope,” is Waimea High School vice principal Penny Vess. Vess is a survivor who defeated breast cancer in July of last year. “I believe there was three (Voices of Hope) in the state that were selected,” Vess said. “I’ll be sharing my journey at Relay For Life.”
Vess added she’s “pretty honored” to have been selected as a speaker. “When I was diagnosed and when I went through treatment, it wasn’t something that I talked to people about. I kept my personal life pretty private,’ Vess said. “Just a couple of people maybe heard what I was going through and things I was dealing with, one being my daughter. Aside from that, people knew bits and pieces but not the details. “When I completed my treatment in July, I think it was then
I realized there’s more to this, and I think I can share my story and get people to understand that we’re not the only ones,” she continued. “I may have been the one selected, but there’s tons of people affected just on this island alone.
