ou are invited to come out and join your friends and neighbors for the 23rd ANNUAL GARDEN FAIR, Saturday, April 7th, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Kauai Community College front lawn. Hosted by the Kauai County Farm Bureau and the UH-Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR), the annual Kauai Garden Fair is one of the largest gatherings of green thumbs on the Garden Island. It’s a great way to see and share the bounty of the island firsthand. The Fair will be buzzing with gardeners, suppliers, producers and shoppers eager to look over a wide variety of plants, landscape products and equipment and to find out the latest gardening information and tips. A diversity of tropical plants, flowers, produce and seeds will be available to buy from farmers, gardeners and nurseries from all around the island. The theme of this year’s Fair is “Ecology of the Home Garden.” Ecology is the study of relationships between living things and each other, and the environment. By looking at patterns of nutrient and energy flow, we can grow stronger,

healthier, more productive plants - and our gardens will thrive. Extension Agent Emilie Kirk will introduce the basic principles of ecology as they apply to home gardens. Special guest speaker Dr. Ted Radovich from UH-Manoa will compare the workings of organic and conventional gardens. Extension Agent Savannah Katulski will discuss how to optimize livestock manure as a garden fertilizer; and Kauai’s newest Extension Agent, Roshan Manandhar, will
explain the role of invasive species in the ecology of the garden. Every year at the Garden Fair we provide a preview of the August Farm Fair (also hosted by the Farm Bureau, in partnership with CTAHR). This summer’s 2018 Annual Fruit and Vegetable Show will feature a special prize category for the best tomatoes (of any variety). his year’s schedule of “Garden Talks” hosted by the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (UH-CTAHR) focuses on the theme, “Ecology of the Home Garden.” Stop by and listen to talks on stimulating topics, such as how the science of ecology helps us understand workings of the garden; how to integrate animal with plant production; comparisons between organic and non-organic systems; and the role of invasive species in the garden. Phases of the program include: w AgCurious is a three hour seminar to attract those with interest in getting involved in agricultural production. The Seminar provides them with an overview of the industry in Hawai’i and its importance. As well as conveying a sense of what is involved in farming, both as a farmer and farm worker, including: challenges and opportunities, costs and benefits, and lifestyle. AgCurious informs participants about various avenues to get started, but especially recruit those who want to know more about what it is like to be a farmer to the next phase (AgXposure). w AgXposure is Approximately 4 weekends of Farm Tours around Kaua’i. This phase provides participants with experiences that convey the lifestyle and knowledge important to farming exposing participants to what life would be like
if they were to be a fulltime farmer. Recruit those who want to learn how to be a successful farmer and can make the necessary commitments to the next phase (AgSchool). w AgSchool consists of 1 weeknight in the class room and 1 weekend on the farm for 4 months (additional time is often necessary to maintain crops). Topics delivered by experts and specialists include: Soil nutrients and plant health management, Propagation, Variety selection, Farm equipment, Irrigation, Pest control (pathogens, insects, nematodes, and weeds), Post harvest storage and handling, food safety. Participants acquire a fundamental understanding of the principals underlying a broad spectrum of production topics. Participants practice on-farm the techniques related to critical production skills. Participants learn of the resources available to assist them and/or further their knowledge of farming. auai Community College (KCC) offers classes in Plant Biology and Tropical Agriculture (PBT) with the following certificate options:
◗ AgPro is 1 weeknight & 1 weekend day for 6 months (additional time necessary to maintain crops). Open to select graduates of AgSchool. This phase provides a deeper learning on the production topics of AgSchool with emphasis on commercial production, and coverage of business topics for the entrepreneurial farmer including Cost of Production, Crop and Business Planning, and Marketing. Participants practice on-farm techniques on larger plots and market their crops. Participants practice techniques related to business management topics and develop a business plan. Participants learn of resources to assist them and/or further their knowledge of farming and business. ◗ AgIncubator (NEW - coming Spring 2019) Open to select graduates of AgPro.Participants practice farming their chosen crop on land provided by the program for up to three years. Continued access to program peers and experts as well as shared equipment and infrastructure. The Kauai 4-H Federation teen officers have planned a wonderful array of keiki activities for your young family members. The Kauai 4-H Federation will sponsor the following interactive learning stations for keiki as their way of thanking the community and businesses for supporting them throughout the year. 4-H youth will put into practice their planning, organizing and public speaking skills by teaching keiki something fun.
