ook for the 4-Hers at the fair! You’ll find them wearing the traditional 4-H logo – a green four-leaf clover with white “H” on each leaf representing Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Bring a child to share the experience of cuddling up to a bunny or petting a tame chicken at the 4-H petting zoo. Take advantage of a teachable moment to develop an appreciation of animals and agriculture. Cost to enter is $2.00 a person. All proceeds of the zoo will benefit the Kauai 4-H Federation, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational opportunities for youth.
During the year, the 4-H Federation provides opportunities for youth to lead, learn and grow through workshops, leadership trainings, conferences and service learning projects. With the help of adults, youth plan and implement these activities while developing valuable life skills. 4-H activities will take place under the Livestock Tent during the four day fair. ◗ The 4-H Petting Zoo will take place from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, 7:30-9:00 p.m. on Friday, 3:30-5:00 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 - 2:30 pm on Sunday. For your health and safety, we will have hand washing
stations, but remember that no food, beverages, baby bottles and sipper cups should be brought to areas where animals are present. ◗ 4-Hers enrolled in the market livestock project will be working with their project animals and getting them ready for the show and auction. A Beef Steer and Hog Show will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. and a Lamb and Goat Show will be held on Friday, Aug.

In fact there are only three terrestials that are native to these islands. All of the rest have been brought in by early explorers, businessmen and orchidists, as author Paul
Wood put in his book “Orchid Isles, the Story of Orchids in Hawaii,” “If orchids could dream of an orchid heaven, they would imagine something like the Hawaiian Islands.” Hawaii has the perfect climate and microclimate with just the right

ldrine Guerrero is an ukulele player Kauai and originally from the Philippines; Aldrine takes styles of old and new, and mixes in his own formula of playful but yet mature sounds. Aldrine’s vocals are quite unique and his play style of ukulele is described as “Hawaiian jam style meets 8-bit video games” He is also a multi instrumentalist that range from clarinets and saxophones to guitar and bass. his year, the Farm Fair food booths “go green” with the help of Zero Waste Kauai and Kapaa JROTC cadets supported by this year’s Green Sponsor, A&B Properties and Kukuiula. Each nonprofit food vendor has made a commitment to use compostable foodware, investing to help support the reduction of waste at the fair. This adds to other green efforts at the fair, such as CFL lighting, oil recycling and the use of HI-5 containers. To support our commitment to zero waste, please separate waste in the food
areas into containers marked compostable, recycling and trash. Zero Waste volunteers will be on hand to help answer
questions. All compostable food waste generated during the event will be carried to Mark Freeman’s farm.

T
his year we are dedicating our Farm Fair to the Oyama Farm and family. Born and raised on Kaua`i, Roy Oyama has farmed on the family Kalāheo homestead for all his life. Adapting to changing market conditions, the Oyamas have farmed everything from vegetable, fruit and flower crops to hogs and poultry. Pioneer Hi-Bred, recognizing his work ethic and local faming expertise, hired him setting off a long career paralleling his own farming enterprise. Roy and Gladys, his wife and farm partner, have raised three daughters, their “Farm Bureau kids” who all went through 4-H and high school Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs, and they now enjoy their four grandchildren. Known as the “go-to-guy” by both local and state leaders, Roy is the person Farm Bureau members and others call for advice when they encounter problems or seek
advice regarding farming and agricultural regulations. A strong supporter of the 4-H program for four decades, Roy wanted to spot light this part of the Farm Fair. All three of his daughters were active participants in the Hawaii 4-H program. He encourages businesses to support the 4-H participants. A member of the Kaua`i 4-H Livestock Committee, Roy loves to talk to people about supporting agriculture through the 4-H program. He works on youth
development, sets the show rules and screens the animals. Roy has garnered many awards and recognition during his many years of community service. In 2012, the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation (HFBF) recognized him as their Outstanding Member. This State award was highlighted by Senator Daniel K Inouye delivering Roy’s award. He has served as the Chair of the State Farm Bureau’s Membership Committee and was the HFBF Treasurer. Recognized for his leadership and voted in by his peers, Roy served many years on the HFBF Executive Board. Please join us at 6 p.m. for our Opening Ceremony and help us celebrate one of Kauai’s “family” farms. See you center stage, Thursday, August 13th. Come and hear stories from our local growers as they share their fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, honey, spices, plants and flowers. unique flavors of jams, syrups, dried bananas, coffee, chocolates, tea, kulolo,
picked vegetables, and spices. Our many talented Kauai Grown members will be sharing their books on lei making and island recipes. We will even share the aloha with your favorite dog or dogs with gourmet treats. awaii Tropical Flowers and Foliage Association - Kauai will be presenting a Tropical Flower Design Show Friday night at the Fair highlighting Tropical Flower Designs, Wedding Flowers and Lei Making featuring Kauai’s finest floral designers. In addition we will again have our annual “Amateur Floral Arranging Contest” open to all ages with prizes and the winners name will be placed on the beloved Mayor Brian Baptiste Perpetual Trophy and displayed proudly in the Mayor’s office. Event Flower Design Show starts at 6:30, those desiring to enter the amateur contest need to sign in at the end of the Agricultural exhibition tent for the event and entries are taken until 7:30. Amateur contest starts at 7:45. We are accepting entries from persons that have not entered the “Amateur Floral Arranging Contest” in the past.
