WELCOME FROM OUR EXECUTIVE HEAD Welcome to our summer edition of Alta Peto, providing an insight into the many wonderful events which have taken place this term. The boys and young men in each year group have continued to throw themselves with gusto into their creative and academic activities, whilst also giving their all on the sports field, in the swimming pool or even on the sea in the National Sailing IAPS Competition. This edition includes highlights of the many and varied opportunities which the boys take part in, and their sense of energy and enthusiasm has taken them to new heights this term. A special mention must go to the return of the much anticipated 5-aside football event on the final afternoon of exam week. This provides the perfect outlet for the boys to celebrate their hard work together and we are, as always, very grateful to the SHA who organise such fantastic events for us all to enjoy. This was echoed by all the parents who attended the Summer Ball at Raven’s Ait, where guests appreciated the time to relax and unwind with friends.
We are delighted to have run the full Expedition Week again this year, with every year group enjoying new experiences, learning skills and building memories. My sincere thanks to all my colleagues who dedicate their time to providing such rich opportunities in addition to all the work they do through the regular timetable. We are delighted to include the full list of awards and scholarships achieved by the boys through their hard work and passion for learning. We are all very proud of their achievements. EXECUTIVE HEAD’S COMMENDATIONS Mrs Hubbard was delighted to award Conor O’Kelly, Year 5, Jacob Jenkinson, Year 6, Carter Jenkinson, Year 7, and Ayaz Dikmen, Year 5, an Executive Head’s Commendation, They were all presented in their year group final assembly. Conor, together with his cousin, endured a 100km run between them for a charity very close to both their hearts; Dementia UK. Jacob and Carter Jenkinson completed a 308 mile cycle from Dover to Exeter, raising money for Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid. An astonishing £11,326 was donated and we were proud to congratulate them on this impressive endeavour. Ayaz challenged himself by participating in the 10K March for Men raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK. He managed to raise over £15,000 and became the star fundraiser of Prostate Cancer UK among 1000 plus fundraisers. Such a tremendous achievement for all the boys, well done.

External Examinations INDEPENDENT PROJECT QUALIFICATION (IPQ) The Year 8 Scholars group recently completed their IPQ (Independent Project Qualification) which was set and moderated by the ISEB. The boys were challenged to select a question, research the answer, develop their views in light of research, present their findings, and reflect on the learning process. The emphasis is on the process rather than the output, providing the boys with real insights into their own ways of thinking and working. This qualification has prepared them for the style of learning they will be working to throughout their time at senior school.
Having run as a pilot scheme last year, 2022 has been the first official year where the projects have been assessed. The results were outstanding with every member of the group achieving a Distinction which is the highest possible grading that can be awarded. It is also important to note that the ISEB have requested that Shrewsbury House School’s projects are used as examples for other schools in order to provide further training. Post CE Enrichment Programme YEAR 8 POST CE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME The Year 8 boys enjoyed an enriched post CE programme during the last few weeks of term – street dance, careers talks, first aid and self-defence training, a high ropes experience and tug-of-war to name but a few of the activities. They listened to careers talks from professionals in various fields including talented presenter, Angelica Bell, who talked about the entertainment industry. Tim Jones from Deutsche Bank spoke about being social and always having a passion for something, and former first class cricketer, Shane Geraghty, shared his experiences with the boys and the importance of having a plan B in your career. The boys were delighted to welcome back three Shrewsbury House Old Boys who spoke about what to expect in their new Senior Schools and the many opportunities that await them. The 3 old boys, now at Tonbridge, Eton and Epsom, were honoured to answer questions from the Year 8 leavers! The Deputy Head of the Middle School at King’s College Wimbledon spoke about what the boys needed to know for their next schools. During his talk he gave lots of useful advice about senior school. Year 8 benefitted from a hugely impactful and honest Gambling talk from Patrick Foster, a talk from Kingston Charity ‘Oxygen’ about knife crime and a talk about Mental Health coping mechanisms from Chris Brown. Representatives from the Alex Bassan Change Foundation spoke about the types of different disabilities, specifically those to do with sight, and how sport can still be played with these conditions. The boys demonstrated their kindness and compassion when they spent the morning at both Shrewsbury House Pre-Prep and The Rowans School, helping the younger children with sporting activities and reading with them. The little ones were absolutely thrilled with their new friends. A trip to the Ardèche concluded the fantastic Post CE Enrichment Programme for the Year 8 boys.

Trips
WEST WITTERING During this term, Year 6 set out for a day’s fieldwork to West Wittering on the Sussex Coast. It was a great opportunity to see our geographical study of coastal landforms, processes and management in action. The day started with an introduction to the study area including a discussion of spit formation, the impacts of coastal processes and the conflicts that arise from human activity. We then ventured into the dunes to study sand dune and salt marsh formation and get a better view of the landforms and East Head’s location. The boys completed a bi-polar evaluation of the coastal defences before enjoying a well-deserved lunch break. Overall it was a great day and certainly helped the boys to understand the dynamic and complex nature of our coastlines. A day at the beach also gave us the perfect excuse to eat ice lollies in the rain.
FISHBOURNE PALACE Year 5 boys visited the beautiful grounds at Fishbourne Palace this term, home of Togidubnus, a local chieftain and Roman ally. They completed work on the Roman mosaics and hypocaust of the Palace with a bit of dressing-up along the way! The boys watched a short film about the site before partaking in a Roman workshop. This involved having a go at preparing Roman food, playing some Roman entertainment games and practising their Latin letters with both ink and wax tablets. It was a gorgeous sunny day so we all enjoyed lunch in the grounds before a walk around the formal gardens, including the ancient triclinium.

Expedition Week
YEAR 3 – GO APE & BOCKETTS FARM Year 3 have had a very adventurous week and certainly enjoyed a few days as the only year group in the School! Our week started with a visit from a French theatre company – c’était fantastique! We then displayed our musical talents in the Year 3 concert, with instruments ranging from the piano to the saxophone. Tuesday was a tree-mendously fun trip to Go Ape, where we swung through the trees tops and tested our nerves on the zip line. An activity day on Wednesday was filled with a whole host of exciting goings-on, including a bouncy castle, laser tag and an indoor maze – just to name a few! We headed out again on a trip the next day. This time to Bocketts Farm. Great fun was had feeding the animals and going on a tractor ride. To round off an action-packed week, we had a circus skills workshop. We learnt to juggle, spin plates and even walk on the tightrope! We then had the opportunity to perform the new tricks we had learnt to our parents and each other. There are certainly a few clowns in the making!
I liked the indoor caving because there was a ball pit and we had to try and find our way through the maze when it was pitch black!

YEAR 4 – WINDMILL HILL RESIDENTIAL TRIP ‘Variety’ and ‘fun’ were the key words in the Year 4 Expedition Week. We started off with a fully interactive French theatre workshop, where the boys enthusiastically participated in impromptu performances of “Jacques et le haricot magique” and “Le petit chaperon rouge”. These were performed entirely in French, complete with props and costumes. Musical talent was on display during the Year 4 Concert, where the boys impressed their audience with a huge range of fine musical performances. Also on the first two days, the boys participated in a variety of group activity sessions including art, drama, music, sport, DT, board games and even a mystery wordsearch. The long anticipated highlight of Year 4’s Expedition Week came on Wednesday morning, when we set off to the PGL Windmill Hill Activity Centre in East Sussex. The boys spent two exciting nights away from home enjoying a wide variety of physical activities ranging from raft building to the zip wire, orienteering, Aeroball and the famous giant swing, with much in between. They tackled all of these challenges with great determination and huge smiles, fuelled by delicious food and unlimited visits to the fruit and salad bar. Expedition Week was the perfect way to finish off the Year 4 adventure.
The best bit was building a raft. Once we finished building them, we got the chance to sail them. We had 4 people on each raft and our raft floated and we got to the other side of the lake. I also loved the giant swing

The instructors and teachers were all really kind. I had a brilliant dormitory and I got to share it with all my friends. The dorms felt like a home to me and we all said ‘I’m home’ every night when we got back to them. The activities were all really fun and very different. My favorite one was the aero ball that was super fun

It’s hard to pick my best bit as it was all so fun. Snap shot and giant swing were probably the two highlights. I liked the raft building and we didn’t sink but everyone dropped their paddles so I had to swim in the lake and get them and that was really fun. The food was also brilliant

YEAR 5 – KINGSWOOD RESIDENTIAL TRIP Year 5 headed to their residential trip at Kingswood Outdoor Activity Centre in Staffordshire where they experienced activities such as crate stacking, an obstacle course, bushcraft, wall climbing, orienteering, abseiling and the famous zipwire! The boys faced every challenge as a team demonstrating super team work. In addition, they were able to try a variety of different types of activities such as “Jungle Vines”, caving and Aeroball, finishing the day with a campfire and a well-deserved hot chocolate. The boys have had a wonderful time and displayed their continued enthusiasm even when faced with challenges outside their comfort zone.
Unforgettable memories. I made lots of new friends, conquered some fears and had a great time!

Bushcraft was so much fun – we spent the whole day in the woods, lighting fires, shooting arrows and building dens and shelters. This was really interesting and we spent the whole day around nature and outside. My other best bit was the water park where we spent ages playing and jumping off obstacles
YEAR 6 – LAND AND WAVE, DORSET The Year 6 boys had a brilliant time at ‘Land and Wave’ in Dorset. They enjoyed Bushcraft activities, including archery and fire starting before hitting the water on body boards and giant paddleboards. The eagerly anticipated crabbing activity at Swanage harbour was a real hit, where the boys displayed much concentration and determination to catch as many crabs as possible! Coasteering and ‘slip and slide’ activities then followed, before a beautiful walk to Corfe Castle to complete our stay where the boys enjoyed a well-deserved ice cream!

I liked everything about the trip. The coasteering was really fun and we jumped off high rocks into the sea. I really enjoyed being in a tent with my friends and having free time to play. Crabbing on the pier was so good and we actually caught loads of crabs. After that we had fish and chips on the beach

The best bit about the trip was going in the sea and body boarding. I had never done that before and it was so much fun to learn this new skill. Crabbing was also brilliant. Again, I had never done this and I caught lots of crabs. After that we were really hungry and then had fish and chips – it was just what we needed and ended a really good day

YEAR 7 – THE CHATEAU, NORMANDY Year 7 boys visited the Chateau in Normandy where they enjoyed a rotation of activities such as climbing, French lessons, Aeroball, orienteering, bread making and an assault course! They had an entertaining evening where they presented their French sketches, in wonderfully colourful costumes! The last morning they walked around the bay to the iconic Mont St Michel – a thoroughly memorable day blessed with the most stunning of views.
I loved making the bread. We sang the chateau song as we made bread and we working against the other team to try and sing the loudest. We made our bread into different shapes and then cooked it. The bread tasted amazing when we had finished. The orienteering was really good too as we went around the whole chateau area looking for different numbers. This allowed us to explore around the whole campus

The activities were really fun. I enjoyed the archery in particular as I had never done that before and the instructor made it really fun and easy to understand. The assault course was great as we got really muddy and fell in the water

The climbing walls were brilliant and challenging. We got to try different routes to climb up and some were a lot harder than others. We had to ring a bell at the top and the instructor timed how quickly we got to climb up the wall. Aeroball was great too. It was like trampolining and basketball and we were playing against another side. It was such a fun activity and a really good way to end Year 7

YEAR 8 – ARDÈCHE TRIP Year 8 boys took a short flight to Lyon before a drive down into the Ardeche region in Southern France. Two groups attempted to build a raft and cross the river while the other groups turned their hand to raft building, creating fires and searching for water sources. The boys completed a 2 day, 35km river descent in the glorious sunshine where they began with a paddle under the incredible Pont D’Arc and continued down the Ardeche river, tackling rapids, swimming and stopping at river beaches before making it to the campsite. After a good night’s sleep the boys were energised to continue down-stream, working their way through more white water, enjoying swimming down some rapids, exploring a cave and rock jumping. Exhilarated and very pleased with themselves, the boys completed the paddle and headed back to camp for a well-earned rest! The final group then tackled raft building and worked together to construct 2 rafts that successfully sailed a long way down the river. All the boys then headed to the woods for the highlight of the day – the 300m zip wire! A fantastic experience for all those involved and an excellent final residential trip for our Year 8 leavers.

I loved the high ropes. There were so many different routes to go on and chances to explore through the trees. The zip wires over the river were absolutely amazing and definitely my best bit of the trip so far. The day on the high ropes was the best bit. I loved zip wiring over the river. We found a fresh water spring and also did raft building. The raft building was epic but our raft came apart and we had to swim back. It was still really fun though. Also being able to spend time with my friends and having free time to play cricket, volleyball and eat ice creams
After a really hard day of kayaking, we stopped at our camp for the night. After the bbq our instructors took us for a walk to this amazing view point where we could see for miles around us and could see the river and the gorge that we had kayaked on below us. Our whole year group sat and watched the sun set and it was absolutely stunning. I won’t ever forget that view

MUSIC SOIRÉE The summer Musical Soirée featured a range of instrumental and vocal items performed by our very talented musicians. There were notable performances from Symphonic Wind Band, Jazz One and Brass Ensemble, and the String Ensemble gave a wonderful rendition of ‘You raise me up’. The evening concluded with the Queen classic ‘Don’t stop me now’, energetically performed by the combined forces of SHS Singers and Senior Band. All performers were well received by a warm and supportive audience and thanks must go to Mr Hamilton, Miss Spence, Miss Percy, Mr Jani, Mr Rae and Mr Gough for organising such a special evening.

ECO-COMMITTEE The Eco Committee boys attended an Eco event organised by St Matthew’s Church this term. The participants included children from other local schools, as well as distinguished guests such as Sir Ed Davey, MP, Alison Holt, the local councillor, Jack Edwards, an Environmental Officer and Elliot Newton, a Bio-diversity Officer. The aim of this event was for schools, to discuss their current and future plans to make their schools as well as their communities as ecologically sound and as environmentally responsible as possible. In their usual style, boys of Shrewsbury House spoke about their future planned with passion and clarity. Their genuine concern for the environment and their aim to achieve the School’s eco target was appreciated by all those present.

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION OF CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY We were very proud of the Year 6 boys in their fantastic performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The boys did an excellent job of ‘getting into character’ and provided parents, staff and guests with an evening of humour and jollity. A special mention to the three Willy Wonka’s – Oscar Freeman, Rishaan Khera and Max Snead who did an incredible job of remembering their lines and delivering them confidently on the evening. The production was supported by the members of Theatre Club: Ayush Agrawal, Max Aherne, Adam Davies, Sebastian Foulger, Thomas Hill, Stein Mackintosh, Gabriel Mungavin, Theo O’Donnell, Alex Peace, Ashwin Sewell, Amar Shah, Oliver Starling, Arun Stewart and Thomas Sykes.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS With the unique celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 year reign came the opportunity for a unprecedented celebration of our own in conjunction with Rowan Prep School. With many siblings across the two schools, we were delighted to host the girls for an afternoon of traditional games and music with Jubilee cakes and a special commemorative coin was given to each pupil. Our senior boys gave a fantastic assembly to the whole School at the start of the day and were excellent hosts during the afternoon, ensuring that much fun was had with the games and songs. Celebrating with our community brought much excitement and we certainly finished this half term on a high!

YEAR 3 & 4 CONCERTS The Year 3 Concert featured a wonderful range of instrumental and vocal performances by our talented musicians, including the Junior Band who rocked the Assembly Hall with style. The afternoon concluded with a wonderful performance by the whole year group of the song ‘Make your own kind of music’. It went down so well that an encore was requested and fullfied. The following afternoon, the Year 4s took to the stage for their concert. All musicians played well and gave spirited performances. The afternoon was rounded off by a lustrous rendition of the Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Don’t Stop’ by all Year 4 boys. Very well done to all the Year 3 and Year 4 boys and a huge thank you to Mr Hamilton, Miss Spence and Mr Jani for organising such wonderful concerts.

JUBILEE DRAWING COMPETITION
SCIENCE LIFT-OFF COMPETITION
In celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, two art competitions were launched for the boys to encourage creativity. The Jubilee Postcard Competition challenged the boys to create a postcard for the Queen using a range of different drawing and shading techniques.
Years 3-6 boys took part in a National Competition called ‘Lift Off ’ launched by the UK Space Agency. There were lots of creative entries but congratulations to the following boys who were awarded a special mention.

MOSQUE COMPETITION
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
Year 6 were tasked with creating a miniature model of a Mosque this term. They needed to incorporate all the key elements they had learnt in class and include a short fact explaining the significance of the various features. Any materials could be used to build the mosque – shoe box, cardboard, model clay, wood, lego etc.
The Landmark Photography Competition encouraged the boys to engage with the local community of South West London and Surrey. The challenge was to take a photograph of an inspiring landmark. There were thirty entries for the Photography Competition and it was pleasing to receive such a wide variety of entries printed in both colour and monochromatic and also printed on matte and gloss paper. Winners and runners-up were selected from Year 3 – Year 8. Congratulations to the following boys who were presented with certificates in assembly:

WIMBLEDON YOUNG WRITER’S COMPETITION Well done to all of the boys who entered the Wimbledon Young Writer’s Competition. They wrote either a poem or a piece of prose entitled ‘The Tree’ and there were some very inventive and creative ideas. The Competition received entries from over 71 schools across London, as well as Surrey. We were thrilled to hear that eight Shrewsbury House boys received a Commendation and one highly recommended – congratulations to all of our boys on a fantastic achievement. Sport Round-Up
CRICKET Over one hundred cricket matches were played across all school teams by the various SHS teams in the first half of the term alone. From the first day of the summer term, the boys have been exemplary with their behaviour and attitude to cricket. There have been great lessons learnt and some truly wonderful performances by some very talented boys. Congratulations to Luke Curle (Year 7) and William Dennis (Year 4) for completing stunning hat tricks with the ball. With the bat, it was great to see the boys looking to play with attacking intent and congratulations to Adam Davies (6th XI), Reuben Galaun (2nd XI) and Lucas Cornelsen (1st XI) for nudging, teasing and at times bludgeoning their way to maiden 50s. The individual highlight of the year goes to 1st XI captain William Baker who compiled a fantastic 146 not out against Caterham in just 72 balls. Many of our teams entered end of season cup competitions in Reigate, St Pauls and Caterham and congratulations to the 1st XI and U10A teams who walked away with credible third place finishes at their respected Reigate 6s Competitions. SHS has a very proud cricketing tradition and as a school we are one of very few schools who continue to offer cricket to every boy in the School, regardless of ability or background. Long may this continue and once again, thank you to all the parents and extended family for supporting the 2022 cricket season.

HOUSE SWIMMING GALAS It was a truly wonderful week of swimming. With the competition split over six noisy and all-action events, all the boys were given the chance to swim their best for their House. There are few other sporting venues that inspire quite like the London Aquatic Centre, host pool for the London 2012 Olympics. This is an elite event and with the backdrop of synchronised divers making the 10m platform look easy, the boys were challenged simply to do their best. They did not disappoint. Both boys swam faster than they ever have and achieved personal best times: Zachary was 15th in the country in breaststroke and Ernie achieved 12th in the butterfly with his fastest swim. ‘Well done’ doesn’t seem to do their commitment and dedication justice!

There has been a strong drive this term to connect the boys with the importance of presenting themselves in the correct manner, – conducting themselves always with the school values in mind. Values nominations have continued this term and the Sports Department delivered a whole-school assembly focusing on the school values, and celebrating those boys who have been nominated for values awards throughout the year.
A strong success for our programme this term has been tennis, with over ninety selections made for tennis events. It is certainly right to highlight this jump in opportunity for the SHS boys, they have competed in a number of tennis fixtures this term across a variety of age groups.

The U13’s have played some excellent matches against some very tough opponents and have been led by the number one seed Daniel Casebourne, backed up by some superb tennis played by Aaryan Kamath and Toby Craig. The U10 and U11 teams have also showed themselves to be very talented tennis players, with notable performances from Nicholas Chan, Benji Hidalgo, Aiden Zhang and Ethan Luo. The U9 tennis team have played their first tennis fixtures at SHS and have shown themselves to be a very talented bunch and ones to look out for in the future, particularly Luca Hazell and Maximiliano Laurence. Everyone who has represented the School at tennis this term has performed admirably and should be very proud of their efforts.

ATHLETICS AND HOUSE PENTATHLON It has been wonderful to extend the opportunity to compete in Athletics to all the boys this term. Between inter-school events, House Pentathlon and an extended programme for the House Sports Days, the SHS pupils have been brilliantly supported in respect of development and competition. Claremont Fan Court School Event: The team of Year 7 and 8 athletes competed at the historic grounds of Claremont Fan Court School to try their best in their first athletics fixture of the year. With boys competing in multiple events they all stepped up to the mark and gave it their all. Notable mentions to Charlie Vignon, Luke Lobban, Oliver Ross and Tom Noble for winning their respective events, as well as an overall championship victory for our SHS Year 7 team! Congratulations to all the boys.
House Pentathlon The summer term has seen the boys in Years’ 3-7 (individual and House competition) and Year 8 (individual competition only) compete and complete the House Pentathlon, where each boy has run, thrown and jumped to the best of their ability. House Pentathlon combines both individual performance and overall team performance to produce an overall House Pentathlon winner. The house event is based on both track and field events with varying distances run over short, middle and long distances, while boys compete in long jump and/or discuss and cricket ball throw. The pupils have worked through the different techniques for each event before having their times and distances recorded with some great improvements made. House Pentathlon Result

Eight year 7 boys took part in the Kingston Borough Athletics meet at Kings Meadow in glorious sunshine. The boys applied themselves fantastically well against some very strong performances competing from the local schools. Ollie Norris did fantastically well in his 100m race to finish 3rd while Luca Foenander finished 4th in the 75m Hurdles. The relay team produced a strong performance to finish 4th (Tristan Mercer, Luca Foenander, Victor Mudry and Ollie Norris). The biggest success came from Alexander Senny who came 2nd in the discus and went one better in the shot put competition to finish 1st. A brilliant day and well done to all the boys who competed.

A group of eager Year 3-6 boys headed over to Wimbledon to compete in the Donhead Athletics event. It was a long and hot day where a lot of the boys had to step up to the mark and compete in events they had never done before. Everyone was fantastic having to compete in multiple events with little rest in between events at times. Special mentions go to Joshua Brown, Lucas Brand, Wilhelm von Danwitz, Elliot Mullane, Leo Park, Senan Lousse and James McCall for achieving medal positions in their respective events. Another mention has to go to the Year 4 relay team who came 3rd overall!

SAILING
The senior boys continue to have the opportunity to row with Kingston Rowing Club. Their age predetermines the appropriate discipline; namely sculling. For the first time this year, we have seen select individuals take to the water in single sculls. Those that have experienced the technical challenge of a craft of this type will certainly see the relevance of celebrating this achievement. Well done to all the Year 7 and 8 pupils who have taken to the water this term.
Hearty congratulations to Josh Jacobs, Robert Richards, Alex Morawitz and Austin Comerford who represented SHS at the IAPS National sailing event at the UK National Sailing Centre in Portland Harbour (host venue for the London 2012 Olympics). And what a day it proved to be! With around forty crews taking to the water (shared with inquisitive dolphins!) in winds rising to 25 knots (very strong!) it was certainly not for the faint of heart. This elite competition was structured as a multi-race grand prix format with all race results recorded for the overall result. Put simply, the racing was fierce! As the day progressed more and more crews abandoned and hour by hour there was no sign of the SHS crews heading home – the epitome of perseverance! With everyone safe on the slipway (among the sails of Great Britain, New Zealand and Argentina) it was time for a warm shower, a well-deserved late lunch and the wait for the results. And it was worth the wait! – Crew #24 (Josh Jacobs and Robert Richards) completed all races with one top-ten placing despite two capsizes. Placed 13th overall Crew #25 (Austin Comerford and Alex Morawitz) completed all races with two top-ten placings. Placed 7th overall IAPS National Sailing Championship team result: Shrewsbury House School – BRONZE!

ISFA FOOTBALL
Golf has made a welcome return to the programme this term. A short survey to all parents uncovered a strong cohort of keen SHS golfers. With the right support over the coming years we would expect to further grow the sport, and build successful SHS teams for the future. The boys have played in a number of events and evening practice sessions. With two inter-school events hosted by Danes Hill and Cranleigh schools, a large evening driving-range session at Horton Park GC, and a brilliant intra-school event at the same venue, the SHS pupils have certainly made the most of these brilliant opportunities.
Well done to the Y6 U11A football group who enjoyed a brilliant end-of-season. While most of us were enjoying a restful early May bank holiday Monday morning, this special football team were meeting at school for the long trip to St George’s Park (the home of English football). Having already qualified for the National ISFA Finals we waited with baited breath for news of their progress in this elite competition on Tuesday. At this point we hand over to star Year 6 pupil, Jack Webster, for his wonderful report:
SKIING A group of intrepid Shrewsbury House boys made their way to the Hemel Hempstead indoor ski slope to compete at the IAPS National Indoor Championships. The opportunity to ski on snow when it was 23 degrees outside was a little surreal, but the boys got stuck in and performed admirably on both the Slalom race and the Giant Slalom race. In the U11 Giant Slalom race Jacob Jenkinson finished 9th, Pip Mitchell finished 30th and Barney Mitchell finished 36th and in the Slalom race Jacob finished 7th, Pip finished 26th and Barney finished 31st. In the U13 Slalom race Carter Jenkinson unfortunately was disqualified but then redeemed himself by finishing 4th in the Giant Slalom and Oliver Ross finished 20th and 18th respectively. Although results are important and should rightly be celebrated, the boys should also be commended for their spirit and attitude in what was a high quality field, especially given the relative inexperience of some of our boys in terms of ski racing. Well done to everyone that took part!
When we first arrived we could not believe that we were actually at the England National Team Training Ground (St George’s Park)! It was so exciting! On the afternoon of arrival we had a football experience; this was a tour around the England training facilities, which included the senior team pitches, gyms and changing rooms. Then an FA coach took us for a training session inside the indoor 3G astro. We felt so lucky. He told us some important tips which we needed going into the tournament the next day. When it came to the tournament there were a lot of nerves and excitement going around the boys. We played five matches in the group stage, this led to three draws, a loss and a win leaving us one point off qualifying for the quarter finals. We tried our hardest and played some great football and we went out with smiles on our faces knowing that we had an amazing experience and we had played very well considering these were the best teams in the country. All of our congratulations to the team, and ALL who have supported them along the way.

CLUBS The clubs after-school programme has again provided a broad and meaningful menu of opportunities for the SHS boys. New on the sports side include badminton (delivered by an expert external coach) and basketball (delivered in-house and proving very popular indeed). Alongside these new offerings sit stalwart sports’ offerings including table-tennis, karate, target shooting, athletics, fencing and swimming. Fencing Both the Junior and Senior fencing clubs have been well attended this past year and good progress has been made by everyone. This term we have presented the Shrewsbury House School Fencing Competition in which the Senior fencing class competed for the annual school cup. After a poule unique where everyone fenced each other, the results were tallied up and the top five placed pupils were as follows: 1st (Gold) Josh Jacobs 2nd (Silver) William Sayers 3rd (Bronze) Jack Dickinson 4th Hugo Daubeney 5th Oliver Hill Congratulations also to the winner of the Effort Cup – Eshan O’Doherty Target Shooting Another wonderful term of target shooting this summer. MOMENTUM CHARITY We were delighted to present our nominated charity, Momentum with a cheque for £7877.48 raised from all the SHS charity events that have taken place this year. Thank you to our boys, parents and SHS community in helping raise this incredible amount. Charity nominations begin again in September, where boys are given the opportunity to put forward a charity they would like the School to consider supporting next year.

Shrewsbury House Association
The SHA were delighted to bring back the Five-a-Side Football Festival which kicked off the term and a real signifier that the summer is on its way. Having been suspended for two years, the boys enjoyed not only an afternoon of football but fairground delights such as Last Man Standing, High Striker, Lucky Dip, slushies and donuts. We rounded off the academic year with a ball on Raven’s Ait Island and a New Starter’s uniform sale. Together with our wine tasting event in autumn term and the Sports Dinner in the spring term, this year the SHA has made £6967 for school enrichment projects and items, as well as donating £1000 to Project Turnover sports mentorship, £500 to the school-supported Momentum Children’s Charity and £300 to the Ukraine Red Cross Emergency Appeal. We are delighted to be able to fund playground improvements with the proceeds of this year’s community building events. Moreover, to simply be able to run these events after so long has been wonderful – for boys and parents alike.
