Balancing life 14-year-old Balika and her 10-year-old brother live in Itahari, a city in the Sunsari district of Nepal. After their father died of black jaundice a few years back, Balika’s mother was forced to leave her children behind in Nepal to work as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia. This left Balika and her brother living alone in a slum area of the city, their house suffering from flooding during the rainy season as it is made of only bamboo and tin.
