Texels add value across sheep industry There is no doubt that 2020 will go down in history as a year of unique circumstances. What has been proven over the last 12 months in the sheep industry is that quality pays and Texels add value, with Brexit negotiations and Covid-19 conspiring to bring huge levels of uncertainty. Set against a prime sheep trade the strength of which for such a sustained period is nearly unprecedented, Texel-sired stock continued to top markets across the UK in the prime, cull, store and breeding rings. Texel prime lambs regularly commanded premiums of in excess of 40p/kg while cull animals were head and shoulders above any other breed too. In the breeding sales, both Texel rams and their crossbred female progeny were more often than not at the top of the prices as buyers sought to exploit the premium prices demonstrated throughout 2020.

2021 will, no doubt, produce fresh challenges for the sheep industry, but thanks to the continued work of breeders the Texel breed will be well placed to respond to them.

T
his year will live long in the memory for a whole host of reasons, both positive and negative.
Thankfully from a Texel Society point of view there have been far more positives than negatives and the breed has once again gone from strength to strength over the course of the last 12 months. The launch in the early part of the year of the Society’s new iTexel database was a significant step forward for members, enabling on the spot, high speed access to flock management information from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. iTexel has enabled the Society to significantly streamline a number of processes, particularly sales entries, making it much easier for members to enter sales, substitute entries and ensure the accuracy of information in catalogues. In addition, the Society’s delivery of genetic improvement services through texelplus, allied to iTexel has again helped improve the delivery of this important service to members the length and breadth of the UK.

Helping the breed to thrive in 2020 has been an exceptional demand for prime lambs throughout the year, with average prices at many live markets barely dipping below £2/kg at any point since the spring. Texel sired lambs have once again been the leaders of the trade at many points in the year, with the breed’s ability to add value to its progeny later reflected in breeding sheep sales, with both Texel rams and Texel cross females once again in high demand at all sales. The sales season cannot get past without mention of the new breed records set for both males and females. The sale of
And the in-lamb sales season didn’t disappoint either, with a new 20,000gns record for a ewe lamb set by Donald MacPherson and family, Hexel, and a new in-lamb female record set at 46,000gns by Procters Farm. Once again my congratulations go to all the connections of these sales for their achievements. At the turn of the year none of us could have foreseen the impact Covid-19 would have on both our own Society and industry and indeed the world as a whole.
While farming has been relatively well insulated from the economic effects of the pandemic many members with outside business interests will have felt the effects all too strongly and they have my heartfelt sympathy.

Meanwhile Edward Pugh’s flock dispersal included the sale of his gimmer for 50,000gns was another massive vote of confidence for the breed, with breeders clearly seeing the rewards of investing strongly in the breed and willing to continue doing so. Again, my congratulations go to Edward for this tremendous achievement.
The lack of events this year, including both summer shows and technical events, has meant there have been much fewer opportunities to glean the latest developments in the industry as well as, of course, socialise!
I would like to thank the small, but effective Society office team who have worked hard to keep things on track despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 and the resultant limitations. Looking ahead, the impact of Brexit will be fully felt in 2021 and I am sure the Texel breed is better placed than most to succeed under the new trading arrangements which will be in place by the time you read this.

hile 2020 hasn’t been the year many of us expected, it has certainly been one of success for the Texel breed and Texel breeders.
W
The demand for Texel stock from the commercial sector has been phenomenal throughout the breeding sales season, with trade hitting new highs at many centres and averages soaring in both commercial and pedigree breeding sales the length and breadth of the UK. Within the breed we have seen new male and female records set and new sales established to provide both breeders and commercial buyers with increased opportunities. The support of breeders for the breed this year hasn’t wavered and it was good to see many breeders at sales this autumn following a summer bereft of shows and technical events. As a result of the disruption caused this summer by Covid-19, there are, naturally, no show or regional flock competition results included within this Journal. We can but hope there is more summer activity next year.

At a Society level it has been a challenging year, with office staff spending much of the year working from home and having limited face to face contact with breeders. However, I must commend all of the team for the effort they have put in on behalf of the members to keep things running smoothly in the face of significant adversity. The implementation of iTexel has been great to see and the feedback from members has been good to hear. Further developments are planned to enable increased functionality over the next 12 months. I must also thank the board for adapting to different ways of working this summer and virtual board and committee meetings have proved to be a great success while saving time and increasing productivity.

How 2021 pans out is yet to be seen and there will, without doubt, be further challenges as post-Brexit agricultural policy becomes better understood and the impact of the new trading arrangements with the EU is felt across the farming sector. I do though, sincerely believe that no matter what the future holds the Texel breed is well placed to meet the challenges ahead. And, thanks to the commitment of breeders and the board to continuing breed development the breed can adapt to future needs more easily than many others. With luck 2021 will be another prosperous one for the sheep industry and the Texel breed and will enable our breed to maintain its prime position within the UK sector.

Meet the Directors The Society’s directors come from a range of backgrounds and with a broad mix of outside interests. These profiles allow an insight in to some of their inner most secrets!
Graeme Knox
Haddo - KWJ North of Scotland - Area 1

Working with his family’s Haddo flock which was founded some 30 years ago Graeme Knox says the breed’s carcass and character is still the driver for the Haddo flock today as it was back in 1990. A full-time farmer with experience working in Canada in the dairy sector Graeme says the biggest lesson he has learnt is not to hesitate and to go with his gut feeling when it comes to important decisions. That said he does admit the family probably continued dairy farming for too long when hoping for better returns. Today the Haddo flock runs alongside commercial ewes, a suckler herd and malting barley enterprises, but while the barley may go to produce whisky, Graeme favours another tipple, with beer always in the fridge at Haddo apparently.

A man with a unique connection to the Texel breed, Andy Barr still maintains the Parkhouse flock founded by his father Andrew as one of the four original importers of the breed to the UK.
Well known for his family’s AberdeenAngus cattle, board member John Elliot clearly has a taste for the darker things in life, stating that the one item always in the family fridge is Bournville chocolate.
Indeed, the Parkhouse flock holds the record for the first pure Texel lamb born in Britain and Andy continues to aim to breed commercially relevant Texels suited to the modern trade.
He does though have a passion for white sheep in the form of Texels, founding the Roxburgh flock to provide rams for local commercial customers having seen the everincreasing demand for the breed among ram buyers.
With non-farming interests in the building trade, Andy and his wife Lyn have in recent years set up a venture with Belgian youngster Laura Hinnekens, giving her a five year contract to run her own sheep enterprise on the farm. Andy says that while he’s not sure what’s in the fridge, he always makes sure there is a bottle of Jura in the corner cupboard. And while claiming to be a tech dinosaur, Andy says he couldn’t do without his ipad, which keeps him informed about the weather and aids his communications with the spell checker!
Having lived and worked on a ranch in Canada for four years John is dedicated to agriculture and is clear on the way to overcome your mistakes ‘learn from them’! Aiming to breed Texels that are easily born, grow quickly and leave a profit for his customers, John has a clear focus on the end user of the Texel breed and combines sheep farming with arable and pedigree beef enterprises.

Cowal, CKC - Royel, CXR South West of Scotland and Cumbria Area 4 A Texel breeder for nearly 40 years current Society chairman Roy Campbell admits the main driver for both the Cowal and Royel flocks is the addiction to trying to breed the best he and brothers, Keith and Allan, and his wife, Liz, can in their respective flocks. With a multi-site hospitality business occupying the majority of his working life Roy says the most important life lesson he has learnt from his non-farming activities is to treat people as you would want to be treated yourself. Like many Texel breeders Roy has a penchant for socialising and it is no surprise to learn that alongside the usual staple foodstuffs the Campbell fridge is also never devoid of gin or tonic!

As a successful junior sheepdog handler and having represented Scotland in his youth Roy says the one piece of farming technology he cannot operate without is of course his faithful working dogs, that and of course his iPhone for accessing iTexel.
Sam Beachell*
Samsar - BHY North East of England -Area 5 A man with a burning desire to farm, board member Sam Beachell has always worked in agriculture and now farms 500 acres of arable alongside 150 finishing cattle and 200 commercial ewes. While clearly a born-farmer, Sam admits to not always knowing everything, in fact stating that he would tell his 25 year-old self that ‘You do not know anything!’, being adamant that you have to make mistakes to learn from them. When it comes to Texels Sam says the driver behind the flock is his wife Sarah, that and of course the pursuit of breeding ‘that lamb’. To breed that lamb Sam says he wishes he could use Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold again. And with arable a significant part of the family business Sam says auto shut-off on his sprayer is the ultimate tool in his farming armoury. *Director Elect
And, after so many years working with the breed Roy is clear on the one ram he’d want back from the dead; Muiresk Northern Dancer, with his daughters having a lasting and cumulative effect on the flocks.

With 20 years of Texels under his belt vice-chairman Jeff Aiken can credit the breed for much in his life, most notably his wife Jennifer. However, Texels were not the breed of choice on the family farm in Northern Ireland and Jeff’s first experience of the breed came at local shows when he could often be found watching the judging. Now flock manager for Procters Farm, Jeff’s commitment to Texels belies a past spent chasing the oval ball as an under 18 and under 20 rugby international for Ireland, a sport he still follows today and which is the root of his one regret in life; his decision to turn down an offer to play in New Zealand. A man with an eye for quality females, Jeff says if he could he would go back and use Haddo Ringleader again for his ability to breed top notch gimmers. It is no surprise that this passionate Irishman insists there is always Irish cider in the fridge at home!

Steve Martin
A lifetime spent in the livestock sector, largely involved in livestock marketing has shown Steve Martin the value in Texels at all levels of the industry. Having first seen Texels at ABRO in 1974 Steve founded the Broomhall flock in 1977 and has been associated with the breed ever since, both with his own flock as well as advising other flock owners and sourcing rams for a number of commercial flocks across the midlands. And with such a long association with the breed Steve says given the chance he’d turn the clock back and make more use of East Middle Night Nurse, a ram imported by Charles Scott in the 1970s, believing the ram’s size, length and conformation wouldn’t look out of place today. As with a number of board members Steve says that while farming has been his lifelong occupation he has also seen the other side of life too, working as a delivery driver during the F&M outbreak of 2001. But while he says he’d tell his 25 year-old self to work hard as he believes nothing is unattainable, he also wishes he’d taken a few more holidays along the way!

Pete Mitchell
Avon Vale - MQZ Southern Midlands of England Area 8 Former professional rugby player Pete Mitchell may not work full time in farming having a career as a land agent for National Grid, but he believes his time spent in other fields has shaped his farming philosophy. A devotee of performance recording Pete says it is his time in rugby which showed him that performance comes from preparation and results come from incremental gains, something any sheep breeder can relate to.

And while Pete believes the humble pocket-knife is the one piece of farming technology he couldn’t operate without, he’s clearly a man with a vision for the future, adding a Boer goat enterprise to his farming mix to meet growing demand for goat meat and aiming to breed efficient Texels fit to face the challenge posed by climate change. Possibly harbouring desires to relive his youth, Pete says the one regret he has is returning to the UK rather than staying in New Zealand once he’d finished playing provincial rugby there.

Graham Hill
Rolle - HGF South West of England - Area 9 It would appear, judging by Graham Hill’s obsession with his head torch, that lights are a rare commodity when working with the Rolle flock. Graham cites the head torch as one of two pieces of farming technology he can’t live without, alongside iTexel of course, and also says the one piece of advice he’d give to his 25 year-old self would be to buy a head torch! As illuminating as these answers are perhaps the most insight can be gained from Graham’s desire to focus strongly on commercial traits when breeding Texels and his strong background in commercial farming which drives his breeding policy. With 25 years of Texel breeding under his belt Graham says it was the breed’s conformation which drew him to Texels in the first place and remains the centre pin of the Rolle flock today. Hopefully, as he draws another Guiness from his fridge Graham can look forward to many more years with the breed and further exploits abseiling down French clock towers.
For someone who initially had no interest in the family’s Texel flock, Daffyd Jones has certainly come around to the benefits of the breed, with the Kitrob flock now the mainstay of the small family farm. But, having worked as a luggage porter at Butlins, Pwllheli, in his teens, Dafydd is well aware of the opportunities to make money elsewhere and in recent years has diversified in to tourism, with a holiday cottage on the farm and rental properties in the nearby coastal resort. And while Dafydd says he didn’t have any interest in sheep farming early on due to his work with the family’s pedigree Holstein herd, he now takes pride in breeding the best he can, in doing so he says that given the chance he’d go back and use Sportsmans Tremendous again. With diversifications now the heartbeat of the family’s income, Dafydd says it is something that should have been done sooner to help spread the risk associated with farming.

Towy Texels - YJB South Wales & Borders - Area 11 Taking your time and keeping it simple is a good motto for life and one Bridget Booker says she would tell her 25 year-old self if she were given the opportunity.

Having been involved with Texels from 1984 Bridget says it is the breed’s commercial attributes which have always been paramount in her mind and in the philosophy behind the Towy flock. And, having spent time working in the hospitality and horse racing sectors alongside farming Bridget says there is nothing she would do differently in her life, simply because if she had she wouldn’t be the person she is today! She does though remind everyone that there is more to life than farming ‘Life is precious and short. Enjoy the ride.’ But, bearing in mind her experience in the hospitality sector there may be some questions asked over the culinary creation that would result from the contents of Bridget’s fridge; Heptavac P, bacon, cheese and beer.

It will come as little surprise to many members that one of the more vertically challenged members of the board, Alastair Gault, believes the one piece of farming tech he can’t live without is a rollover crate!
A self-confessed cheese fiend and technophobe Steve Smith says the only thing he’d change in his farming career would have been to have gone bigger off the back of low interest rates.

His commitment to sheep is something no one that knows Alastair would ever doubt and likewise, while Alastair says few people would know about his other passions, anyone who has seen Alastair’s social media profile will be well aware of his support for Liverpool FC and Ulster Rugby.
And with experience of diversification enterprises, including residential lettings and an on-farm falconry business Steve says the need to educate the public about where their food comes from and the role farming plays in the countryside is of the upmost importance. Founding the Penparc flock in 1981, Steve was drawn to the breed for its conformation and ability to produce lean, high meat yield prime lambs for the modern market. A man noted for his boldness and not one to shirk a challenge, Steve says he’d tell his 25 year-old self to simply ‘buy that farm, it will all be alright’. But, while he may have been reluctant to embrace technology Steve says he now could not live without his smartphone. That said a love of Georgian furniture is a sure sign that despite a hectic farming life Steve has time to enjoy the finer things in life and a sturdy chair is a good place to enjoy that cheese!

ince launching in 2013 the Society’s Education Awards for students have seen nearly £8000 awarded to the winning students at the four recipient universities and colleges.

Society chief executive John Yates explains that the awards are presented to the student with the highest mark on a research project on sheep at Harper Adams in England, University of Aberystwyth in Wales, SRUC in Scotland and Greenmount in Northern Ireland. “These students and their contemporaries represent the future of the UK farming industry and as such the support the Society offers is a great way of engaging them with both the Texel breed and the sheep sector as a whole. “As the industry faces up to the challenges ahead, including the need to be increasingly carbon efficient, attracting the brightest and best minds into the industry will be

essential to the success of sheep farming in the coming years.” A total of 32 students have received awards in the eight years the awards have been running, with projects across a wide variety of topics, including; The relationship between foot issues and ewe body condition score, semen viability, carcass composition and the effectiveness of faecal egg counting. “Many of the topics studied by these students have the ability to directly improve sheep flock productivity and profitability when applied at a practical level and that is great to see. “The Society remains committed to promoting the UK sheep industry as an integral part of the agricultural industry and showcasing the opportunities available for young people at every level of the industry,” he added.

Case Study he British Texel Sheep Society (BTSS) is a charitable company ltd by guarantee with a range of purposes that include the provision of genetic improvement services to over 2300 breeders. The society collates and supplies resources to manage, measure, and improve the Texel breed in the UK. The Texel breed is known for its commercial benefits that include its ability to provide increased lean meat yield and fast-growing lambs. The latest industry body survey states the Texel breed has 27% share of the ram market: a dominant force within the British sheep industry.

The British Texel Sheep Society have contracted AbacusBio for a variety of projects over the last 7 years. AbacusBio is a multinational company based in Dunedin, New Zealand and Edinburgh, UK, bridging science and business. Specialists in genetic improvement and breeding program design, and agricultural-technology development and evaluation, the organisation fronts key innovations and strategies in the

agribusiness space. The relationship between the two organizations have evolved over time, giving rise to key genetic improvement strategies and market analysis to strengthen the Texel breed and the society service delivery in the UK. Work first began in 2014, AbacusBio modelled the benefits of British Texel Sheep genetics. Economic modelling was used to calculate the historical and predict the future financial impact of the genetic improvement in the Texel breed. The modelling estimated that the historic benefits of genetic improvement from usage of the Texel breed were around ÂŁ4.8M Net Present Value (NPV) annually between 1996 and 2015, driven by increased genetic trends and increased ram usage. Benefits over the next 20 years from increased market penetration, continued genetic progress and market share were estimated to provide ÂŁ23M NPV annually. Additionally, further benefits were identified and if adopted by the society, that included new trait data collection and genomic technologies, could
Themes identified in the survey provided evidence that there was a desire for increased focus on genetic improvement in maternal traits and educating both pedigree and commercial farmers on the importance of performance recording, EBVs, and selection indexes. In 2018, AbacusBio conducted a review of the BTSS genetic improvement program. This review addressed five aspects of the BTSS genetic improvement programme including business model options, and traits, estimated breeding values and indexes, and the delivery of genomic evaluations. The review highlighted the importance of fast-tracking routine availability of new traits that have been developed through research and development activities undertaken by BTSS and its collaborators. Current efforts by the society are committed to the exploitation of the recent research projects increasing the financial, animal health and welfare, and environmental benefits of Texel sheep to breeders, commercial farmers, industry, and the public. am lambs A flying trade at the 2020 Scottish National Texel Sale, Lanark, saw a new world record price for a sheep at 350,000gns when Charlie Boden and family sold Sportsmans Double Diamond from their Sportsmans flock, Stockport, Cheshire.

This lamb, one of 19 to make 10,000gns or more, is sired by the 65,000gns Lanark champion from last year when judged by Charlie Boden, Garngour Craftsman, and is an embryo-bred lamb from a ewe lamb flushed last year and sired by the 32,000gns Plasucha Big Gun. The subject of much pre-sale speculation and a crowd puller from the moment he set foot in the market, Double Diamond carries an index in the top 1% of the breed and was met with an opening bid of 10,000gns. The price quickly escalated, with a rarely seen bidding war between a brace of consortiums, resulting in Brian Ross’ hammer finally falling in favour of a threeway partnership between Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn, Procters Farm, Procters and Messrs Teward, New View.

Second best at 65,000gns was Hexel Django from Donald and Sarah MacPherson. This son of Procters Chumba Wumba, himself a son of the 100,000gns Sportsmans Batman, is out of a dam by Duncryne Uber Cool and was another for whom the bids quickly flew in. Taking this lamb was another three-way syndicate, comprising the Knox family, Haddo, Keith, Alan and Roy Campbell, Cowal and the Wight family, Midlock. At 50,000gns was another from the same pen as the sale topper in the form of

Sportsmans Dirty Harry. This lamb by Garngour Craftsman is out of a dam by the homebred Sportsmans A Star and heads away to a five leg partnership. Shares in him were taken by Robbie Wilson, Milnbank, the Nicholson family, Knockem, Bruce Renwick, Castlecairn, Donald and Sarah MacPherson, Hexel and the Arnott family, Haymount. Another from Charlie Boden, this time from the Mellor Vale flock then followed that at 40,000gns, with this being Mellor Vale Déjà Vu. Again, by the 65,000gns Craftsman, he is out of a dam by Garngour Alabama and is another with an index in the top 1% of the breed. He was shared by Stuart Barclay, Harestone and John Forsyth, Glenside. Gimmers Robert Cockburn’s Knap flock enjoyed the pick of the gimmer trade when an Auldhouseburn Billy The Kid daughter sold for 5800gns. This gimmer, CKP1903831, is out of a dam by Charben Valentine which also bred Robert’s 6000gns gimmer at the English National Sale in 2018. Buying this one was Eamonn Vaughan for the Partridge Nest flock. Second best of the evening which saw an 83% clearance rate was a 5000gns call for a Blackstown gimmer across the Northern Irish breeders Messrs Wilson and Wilson Moses. This was WWB1901370, a daughter of Auldhouseburn Black Magic out of a dam by Eglur Viscount, with this one also heading south when bought by Charlie Boden for the Sportsmans flock. The same buyer then paid 4200gns for one from the Procters flock of Procters Farm. This was PFD1903439, a Fordafourie

This lamb, with an index in the top 1% of the breed, drew plenty of strong bidding from the ringside before eventually falling to Staffordshire-based Paul and Anna Johnson for their Corriecravie flock. Sired by Blackadder Weaver and out of a Loosebeare Voomer daughter, this one headed to the South West with the Devonbased Quick family for their Loosebeare flock. The Quicks then recouped some of their outlay when taking 7200gns for their pen leader Loosebeare Champion. ollowing the cancellation of the Main NSA Sale at Builth Wells due to Covid-19 the Society organised a brace of commercially focussed sales in the region at Hereford and Llandovery to provide Society members with outlets for their stock.
Both of these sales were well supported by breeders and saw regular buyers bidding strongly for the best of the rams on offer.
Hereford
A 4300gns call topped the Texel trade at the Hereford Main Sale, with this money paid by Welsh duo Paul Curran and Adrian Davies for Cennen Chad from Hywel Thomas, Llandeilo. Sired by Knock Yardsman, he is out of a dam by the homebred Cennen Yellowstone and attracted attention from both those present and telephone bidders. Second best at 1950gns was Canllefaes Charming from the Davies family. He’s a son of Curley Big Mac and out of a dam by the noted breeder Talcoed You Know. This one found a new home with J R Joseph and Co, LLyswen.

Next best when selling at 1650gns was Whitehart Culture from Jim Hartwright and daughter, Nicki. Their pen topper is a Loosebeare Voomer son out of a Loosebeare Wurzel daughter and was the pick of Price Bros, Knighton. Another from the same home and the first of the day from the Hartwrights, Whitehart Captain then followed at 1600gns. Kelso replacement hits £12,000 exel rams made a solid trade at the replacement Kelso sale held at Lanark by Lawrie and Symington, in conjunction with Hexham and Northern Marts, with three hitting five-figures and a strong average throughout.

Sale topper, at £12,000, was a shearling ram from the Orr family’s Walston flock, from Wester Walston, Carnwath, Lanark. This was one of the first sons to be sold off the £16,000 Blackadder Albertz, a ram shared with Jim Gibb and Iain Minto. Out of a homebred ewe by Scrogtonhead Yer Man, he sold in a two-way split to John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso and Ken Hodge, for the Greenarch flock at Huntlywood, Earlston. Gordon and David Gray received a strong trade for their Ettrick pen of shearlings, peaking at £11,000 for Ettrick Cocky Bob, a son of the £29,000 Garngour Awesome. Shield Winners 2020 disrupted 2020 sales season saw neither the Main NSA Sale at Builth Wells or the Kelso ram sales go ahead, however, replacement sales did take place and the Society’s shields for the highest average for pens of performance recorded shearling rams have been awarded based on these sales.

The flock with the highest average at the Hereford and Llandovery sales which replaced the main NSA Sale, was Paul and Anna Johnson’s Corriecravie flock. Their average of £887.25 was achieved for four sold at the Hereford sale.

Meanwhile, taking the shield for the Kelso replacement sale staged at Lanark was Gordon Gray’s Ettrick flock with an average price of £2577 for nine shearlings sold. Society chairman Roy Campbell said that despite the difficulties posed by this year, demand for Texel rams had been strong at sales the length and breadth of the country, with texelplus rams often among the leading prices.

With sons selling at five figure prices at both Lanark and Worcester and the now world famous Sportsmans Double Diamond selling for 350,000gns at Lanark, he was without doubt the in-form sire of the season. Aside from Double Diamond, his other top selling sons from different dams which saw him clinch the title with an average price of 146,666gns were, Sportsmans Dirty Harry at 50,000gns and Mellor Vale Déjà Vu at 40,000gns, both of which were also sold at Lanark. Taking second spot was Procters Chumba Wumba, himself a son of the 100,000gns Sportsmans Batman.
