Summer 2025

The Season of Renewal in Texas Ranch Country After a hot, dry winter and spring, early summer rains have brought new life to much of Texas. Creeks that had long run dry are flowing again. Natural springs across the Hill Country are recharging. Green pastures are returning—and with them, a welcome sense of renewal and opportunity for landowners across the state. Now is a great time to evaluate your land goals— whether you’re thinking about buying, selling, or making improvements ahead of the cooler months. For sellers, well-maintained, vibrant properties make a strong impression on prospective buyers. And for buyers, this is the season to assess a property’s full potential when the land is at its best. The ranch and farmland market is showing steady signs of recovery, especially for recreational, wildlife, and hunting properties. With interest on the rise, summer is the ideal time to make improvements, plan ahead, and explore new investment opportunities. Whether you’re tracking trends, enhancing value, or simply making your ranch more functional and beautiful, there’s no shortage of possibilities.

We’re also gearing up for a busy season on the road. We’ll be at the Dallas Safari Club (DSC) Convention this July in Grapevine, followed by Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) shows across the state during the first three weeks of August. These events are a great opportunity to connect, share insights, and enjoy time with fellow landowners, sportsmen, and families. Looking ahead, our mission remains the same: to grow a strong, forward-thinking farm and ranch real estate company. We’re expanding our services, evolving with the market, and ensuring every listing gets the attention it deserves. Part of that includes growing our regional presence—both in Texas and beyond. We’re currently licensed in Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon—and we’re not done yet. Whether you're in the market to buy, sell, or improve the land you already own, we’re here to help you make the most of this season—and every season to come.

A great bachelor group of urial rams marches into the open ocean of buffel grass allowing the photographer (me) to capture the shot. The photographer was shocked by this sudden turn of events, never once has the group of rams given him such an opportunity to photograph them, but alas here they were, giving him the perfect opportunity while the crimson gold sun kisses the rams as well, giving them their golden hue and allowing for an even better photo.

Donnis Baggett, a dedicated bison rancher at Lucky B Bison Ranch in Brazos County, is captured in this black-andwhite image as he closes the gate to the bison paddock after a long day of feeding and checking on his herd. On a hot June afternoon, he not only cared for his animals but also took time to educate guests about bison. The moment I captured this photo reflected the quiet yet powerful dedication of ranch life— where hard work and passion meet. This image perfectly encapsulates the essence of ranching, illustrating the steadfast responsibility of being a livestock guardian.

LEADERSHIP & LEGACY

Texas Ranch Journal

A MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF DAVE WILCOX, COO & BROKER – TEXAS RANCH SALES

A THREAT RETURNS: The Screw Worm Is Closing In I don’t sound the alarm often. But this one’s different. The New World Screw Worm is on the move—and it’s heading straight for Texas. Last reported less than 770 miles from our southern border, it’s not a matter of if it shows up. It’s when. And when it does, it won’t stop at livestock. It’ll go after anything warm-blooded that bleeds. Deer. Pets. Horses. People. This isn’t just an ag issue—it’s a threat to the very life that makes this land what it is. I’ve been around long enough to remember what it took to fight it off the first time. Two decades. Over 700 million sterile flies dropped from planes every single week. It worked—but the infrastructure that made that possible? It’s gone. There’s no cavalry coming unless we build it ourselves.

I’ve built my life and my work on Texas land. I don’t plan to watch it fall to something we could have stopped. WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

Right now, our best bet is prevention. Temporary, yes— but critical. Feed-through treatments like Ivermectin, Cydectin, and Dectomax are the line we’ve got to hold. As wildlife biologist Macy Ledbetter of Spring Creek Outdoors put it: “Feed additives are the band-aid needed for now… This is history repeating itself, so we don’t have to guess at the outcome or effects—they’ve been proven. This will impact every person you know either directly or indirectly living in Texas.” This is our warning. But it’s also our window. If we act now, we have a shot at staying ahead of it. If we don’t, we’re giving this thing free rein across the state. Talk to your vet. Start treatment. Spread the word. And make noise—loud enough that the right people can’t ignore it.

8

TEXASRANCHSALES.COM

Talk to your vet. Ask about Ivermectin, Cydectin, and Dectomax. Start treatment early. Don’t wait for symptoms. Share this message. We need word to spread faster than the flies. Push for action. Contact your ag reps. Demand sterile fly production in Texas. Stay vigilant. Watch for signs. Report any cases immediately. This land raised us. Let’s return the favor.

Family Traditions —Grateful for Red Clarence Piwonka has been a member of Capital Farm Credit for more than two decades and a member of the agriculture community for longer than he can remember. Owner of Red’s Grass Farms in South Texas, the tradition of growing-up near family land has become a Piwonka tradition and a part of life’s greatest adventures. “I am from a family of 10,” said Clarence. “My parents ventured into the turf business somewhere around 1972 and started Red’s Grass Farms. My dad’s nickname was ‘Red’ because of his red hair, so that’s how Red’s Grass Farms came to be. My dad passed away in June of 1985, and we continued to run the operation as a family for another 26 years.” Like many businesses, time took its toll on the farm and a decision was made to put the operation up for sale. But in September of 2011, Clarence and his wife Lorene made the decision to keep the business in the family and bought it outright. Clarence and Lorene navigated into a new venture in 2015. Beneath the Oaks Winery and Venue was born on family property in Midfield, Texas. “Mother Nature blessed us with beautiful, majestic oak trees on our property we call the ‘Homeplace,’ where I was raised with my nine siblings. When my wife and I purchased it from the family trust, we converted my dad’s shop he ran his daily sod farm duties out of, to what we now call the ‘Cantina.’” After friends and family approached the Piwonka’s about wanting to host weddings on the property, Clarence and Lorene started researching wedding venues. “By March of 2015, we had added on a reception hall, built a bridal suite, converted the Cantina into the grooms’ quarters and we were in the venue business!” 32

Lorene had always dreamed of owning a winery. Both she and Clarence enjoyed the wine country of California and the Texas Hill Country and thought it would be fun to offer that atmosphere to their local community.

been absolutely flawless,” said Clarence. “I could not find a negative thing to say about anyone that I have worked with. All very professional and very knowledgeable, plus the patronage to us is like a vacation savings account.”

“We planted a few rows of Black Spanish Grapes for aesthetic purposes,” said Clarence. “They ended up producing enough for us to harvest, and Lorene was able to make all the wine for our daughter’s wedding.”

From Clarence’s father’s vision of a turf grass operation to a thriving venue with bottles of wine, a lot of appreciation can be said to go to “Red” to all who visit the family operations.

“The feedback we received from friends and family was great and really pushed us to move forward on opening the winery,” he added. After a lot of consideration, we decided to work with a winemaker in Georgetown. We still harvest the grapes we grow and send them to our winemaker to make our Estate Black Spanish Dessert Wine.” With almost all the grapes Texas grown, the Piwonka’s wine and wedding venue business has flourished. Their hobby has now become a new operation, but one they are most definitely okay with. “We have our daughter and her husband and some wonderful employees who operate the venue which gives Lorene and I plenty of time to escape and enjoy life, which we feel is a wonderful thing.” At Capital Farm Credit, helping Texans succeed in agriculture is what we build our business and relationships on. We are an extended part of our members’ family and share in the celebration of reaching new milestones. One of the many benefits of doing business with Capital Farm Credit is our Cooperative Returns Program. In March, patronage checks are distributed to members. As a cooperative, our members share in our earnings. “My relationship with Capital Farm Credit has

Hunting in the Trans-Pecos and the Big Bend Area BY: CALAN AHRENS - AHRENS RANCH & WILDLIFE The Trans-Pecos region of Texas is a “hidden gem in the rough” when it comes to hunting opportunities, species available, and the memories made while in the Big Bend area. The hunting opportunities offer many unique and challenging experiences for outdoor enthusiasts. The rugged terrain, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes create an ideal setting for those seeking adventure and connection with nature. This region is home to a variety of game, including Mule deer, Javelina, and the elusive Aoudad sheep, making it a prime destination for both seasoned hunters and newcomers alike. Conservation efforts in the area ensure that sustainable hunting practices are maintained, preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of this remarkable part of Texas. The variety of species in this part of Texas allows for an array of calendar options when planning your next hunting excursion. Here are some of the species found in the area and their season dates or ideal hunting times.

AOUDAD SHEEP are exotic game animals so you can hunt these animals year-round. We recommend hunting this species in September, October, and November as this is when the Aoudad are in rut and you can expect to see many large numbers of sheep.

38

CAPITALFARMCREDIT.COM

MULE DEER has a regulated season so if you are planning to chase Mule deer on a property that is not under MLDP, the archery season runs from the last weekend in September till the first weekend in November. If hunting during general season, those season dates run from the Saturday after Thanksgiving for about 15 days. If you are hunting on a ranch that is under MLDP, or Managed Lands Deer Permit, then you get the option to hunt from archery season till last Saturday in January which allows you to potentially hunt during the Mule deer rut.

Summer 2025

ELK are a very sought after exotic animal in west Texas especially during their “rut” which usually takes place around September 15thOctober 15th, give or take. You can also hunt these animals in December and January when bulls frequent feeding areas to replenish from the rut. DOVE & BLUE QUAIL are both fantastic hunting experiences and taste great as Dove or Quail poppers! Dove season typically runs from the first of September to the end of October and then starts up again from mid-December till mid-January. For Blue Quail, their season starts at the end of October and runs till the end of February.

As you plan your hunting trip to the TransPecos and Big Bend area, it is essential to respect the land and wildlife by adhering to local regulations and guidelines. Engaging with local guides and outfitters can enhance your experience, providing valuable insights and ensuring a successful and responsible hunt. Whether you are seeking the thrill of pursuing an elusive game or simply enjoying the serene beauty of the west Texas wilderness, this region promises unforgettable adventures and cherished memories.

SCIMITAR ORYX, WILD HOGS, & OTHER EXOTICS are available year-round in the area on both large high fenced places as well as on low fence ranches. We recommend hunting these “bonus” critters in cooler months to ensure their hides are in best condition as well as minimizing the risk of ruining the meat in the hot desert sun. Scimitar Oryx and Gemsbok Oryx in particular make for an exciting safari style hunt and they also make for great table fare! TEXASRANCHSALES.COM

From Texas Schools to Ranches: Why Texas Needs a New Guardian Angel in Our Skies No matter where you look, the lessons of tragedy are all around us – often hidden in plain sight. Fire sprinklers are so ubiquitous that we don’t even notice them as we walk by. Still, they are the innovative solution to a problem that, not too long ago, destroyed entire communities. Major conflicts have also propelled innovation that, in peacetime, has saved lives. Global Positioning Systems (GPS), originally built to guide missiles, now guide your trucks through West Texas. The EpiPen, born from battlefield auto-injectors, now saves our children from allergies at school. Even your microwave was invented due to military research into radars. We’ve both lived in and have seen first-hand the consequences of war and conflict – one of us on the frontlines as a Navy SEAL, the other a software developer for the Department of Defense (DOD). The war in Ukraine has shown us that the speed of innovation is accelerating, and that the future of threat mitigation is in remote engagement of targets. The rapid innovation in drone technology has completely changed the landscape of national defense. That got us thinking, can this same technology be applied to protecting what we love most: our children?

THIS IS WHY WE CO-FOUNDED CAMPUS GUARDIAN ANGEL (CGA). In 2024, Texas had the highest number of school shootings in the nation – a sobering statistic. Politicians have long been at a loss when it comes to balancing safety and the rights of Americans to own weapons. They’ll often say that we need to “do something” but never specify what that something should be. So, what if we used the lessons of war to innovate that solution – to do something. That is what CGA is – a proactive, forward-thinking defense system with remote protection, powered by piloted drones, guided by floorlevel campus maps and flown by world-class, elite Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-Licensed operators.

Our sole mission: save lives. We accomplish this through state-of-the-art aerial drone technology that not only reduces the average police response time from three minutes to 15 seconds, but also degrades and incapacitates the shooter within 60 seconds. Beyond direct engagement, our integrated apps enhance situational awareness for law enforcement, teachers and parents – providing campuses with a hidden shield of protection while dramatically increasing real-time visibility.

TEXASRANCHJOURNAL.COM

49

When an alert is triggered – whether through a call, sensor or mobile app input – our drones launch in seconds. Within moments, they provide a live feed to law enforcement and administrators, identify the threat with precision and navigate complex school layouts with ease. By forward deploying assets, CGA is a proactive solution that stops the loss of life. The moment chaos begins, CGA acts – while the shooter is still moving, 911 is being dialed and likely before law enforcement has even arrived.

WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE SAYING Beyond the peace of mind our technology brings to Texas students, law enforcement leaders also stand behind its lifesaving potential. Often, officers arrive at the scene of an active shooter with no floor plan, visual confirmation of the target’s location or certainty about the situation. CGA changes that. We act as a force multiplier for law enforcement to give them more time, more clarity and a greater window to save lives and keep theirs. Security Chief Rick Goodrich of Boerne ISD stated, “We’re always looking for any way that we can best protect our staff and students. What we’re looking at with this program would be another layer, another piece of the puzzle that we would use to protect folks.” Chief Goodrich drove the point home, calling our system a game-changer for law enforcement: “I can tell you that everything that we’ve done so far training-wise has just been providing situational limits," he said. "The realtime imaging and the real-time reporting from their operations center to us of what the situation is.”

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING Students across Texas understand what’s at stake, and they’re embracing our technology as a lifeline. As one senior at Boerne High School stated, “Being in a school district so close to Uvalde… that worry is always in the back of my mind… having technology like this come in and that extra layer of security we can have for students, it puts me at a peace of mind.” Another student in Corpus Christi shared a chilling truth: “In an actual school shooting, I don’t think everyone would react the way they make us practice. They just come over the intercom and say, ‘Lockdown. Lockdown.’, and that’s it… That’s why the drones would help. We would know what is supposed to happen.” What sets our system apart is that it doesn’t militarize schools or disrupt the learning environment. Our drones remain concealed inside secure units and are only deployed when a threat is detected or triggered through our alert system. As one student put it, this approach “would reduce the stress of being confronted with the possibility of a shooting every day.” Rather than instilling fear, our technology restores a sense of safety and security, allowing students to focus on learning.

50

TEXASRANCHJOURNAL.COM

He further highlighted the critical time advantage our technology delivers: “Because they’re stationed at the incident site, there’s no ramp-up time. They immediately deploy and can provide real-time intelligence on what is happening at the crisis site, while first responders are en-route. And that’s a game changer.”

Summer 2025

Highland Park ISD Police Chief Mark Rowden echoed Chief Goodrich’s comments, stating, “[It] gives us situational awareness, so far as what we’ve got and what we’re going to encounter. That, in what we do, is absolutely imperative.” By serving as the true first responders in an active threat situation, our aerial drones don’t just protect students – they protect the men and women sworn to defend them. These drones can engage and incapacitate a shooter before an officer ever has to walk into the line of fire. As Chief Rowden said, he prefers “having a drone that is a whole lot more replaceable than one of my officers going around a corner and seeing that danger.”

We started applying our technology to our schools with the mission to protect our children, as they are our most precious population. Yet, this technology is not just for schools. Forwarddeploying defenses have unlimited applications and can be done at scale, cheaply and across the state. Every corner of Texas can benefit from this technology.

Imagine a future where you sleep soundly knowing a guardian watches your kids, your pasture, your home. We know that in Texas, your land is your castle – and someday, Campus Guardian Angel could be the watchmen on its walls.

The same battlefield innovations that support our soldiers are now ready to protect your students and your castle. Let’s not wait for another harrowing headline and be the state that takes a proactive, leading role in school safety and protection. Campus Guardian Angel is giving a new meaning to “Don’t Mess With Texas.”

FEDERAL FUSION GETS TIPPED OFF FEDERAL AMMUNITION IS WRITING A NEW CHAPTER TO ITS FUSION STORY BY LAUNCHING AN ALL-NEW FUSION TIPPED PRODUCT LINE.

Federal Ammunition introduced its popular Fusion line of hunting ammo in 2005. The development of Fusion was driven by a desire to create a rifle cartridge that combined the best qualities of traditional hunting bullets with the advantages of modern projectile design. The result was a full line of ammunition featuring bonded bullets specifically engineered for deer hunting, offering excellent weight retention, expansion, and accuracy. Starting in 2024, these time-tested, hunting loads will now see a new evolution with the addition of a polymer tip. PRODUCT LINE DEFINED One of the defining features of Federal Fusion ammunition is its exceptional performance at a budgetfriendly price point. This combination of affordability and effectiveness has contributed to its widespread adoption among hunters. The fundamental concept behind Federal Fusion ammunition is the use of a specialized bullet with an electrochemically bonded core. The plated bullet design has an extremely concentric layer of copper around the lead core, which makes Fusion one of the more accurate hunting bullets on the market. Fusion’s specialized bonding process ensures that the bullet’s jacket and core remain secured together, delivering superior weight retention for deeper penetration upon impact. This innovation is a significant upgrade from traditional cup-and-core bullets— projectiles manufactured by mechanically pressing a cupped metal jacket on to a lead core—which tend to experience core separation upon impact. Separation of a bullet’s jacket and core can reduce terminal performance and penetration depth, resulting in less chance of pass-through. “Following its initial release, Federal Fusion ammunition quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performance and reliability,” said Eric Miller, Federal’s Centerfire Product Line Manager. “Over the past 18 years, we have expanded Fusion into a large list of calibers and bullet weights, now totaling more than 58

TEXASRANCHJOURNAL.COM

50 product offerings across three different product families. This has allowed hunters and shooters to experience the benefits of bonded-core technology across a broad spectrum of firearms and game species.” In addition to its expansions in terms of calibers, bullet weights and intended uses, Federal Fusion ammunition also saw advancements in bullet design and manufacturing processes. Over the years, Federal continued to refine the Fusion bullet, optimizing its ballistic coefficients and terminal performance to ensure consistent accuracy and reliable expansion at various distances and velocities. Fast-forward to 2024, Federal continues to innovate and expand products loaded with Fusion bullets with the addition of a polymer ballistic tip. With this continued evolution, Federal’s Fusion, Fusion MSR, and the new Fusion Tipped product lines are poised to remain a leading choice for those who demand excellence in their ammunition. POLY-TIPPED PERFORMANCE “Rifle ammunition featuring polymer tips is nothing new. Yet it has revolutionized the shooting industry with its innovative design and exceptional performance,” said Jake Burns, Federal’s Centerfire Rifle Engineering Manager. “Polymer ballistic tipped ammunition has become a popular choice among hunters, competitive target shooters, and law enforcement professionals.” One of the key features of polymer-tipped rifle ammunition is its ability to deliver enhanced ballistic performance. The streamlined design of the polymer tip reduces drag and improves the ballistic coefficient of the bullet, resulting in flatter trajectories, increased accuracy, and retained energy over longer distances. This feature is particularly advantageous for hunters and precision shooters who require consistent accuracy and reliable performance at extended ranges. “The aerodynamic properties of polymer-tipped rifle ammunition contribute to improved flight characteristics and stability. The sleek profile of the bullet, combined with the polymer tip, reduces air resistance, and minimizes the effects of crosswinds, resulting in more predictable and stable trajectories,” explained Burns. “This feature is especially valuable for long-range shooting, where maintaining stability and accuracy over varying environmental conditions is essential.”

Summer 2025

A LEGEND IN THE DEER WOODS Federal Fusion Rifle ammunition has a rich history that spans nearly two decades and has left a significant mark in the world of big-game hunting. Fusion’s pressure-formed lead core is electrochemically bonded to a consistent, uniform copper jacket, resulting in the highest weight retention, deepest penetration, and best expansion in its class. According to Miller and Burns, the all-new Fusion Tipped design offers the same great terminal performance as the original, but with a polymer tip that reduces wind drift and drop, as well as deliver more energy downrange. Paired with a skived nose cavity, the polymer tip also helps initiate consistent, lethal expansion. All this increases ballistic coefficient, flattens trajectories, and boosts energy for better accuracy and extended effective range. The quantity of load options for the original Fusion bonded soft-point product line is almost unbelievable. It currently has 37 different load offerings. Federal’s Fusion MSR product line— designed for use in semi-auto modern sporting rifles—has 8 product offerings. This means the amount of products using the original Fusion bonded soft-point totals 45 options. Additionally, the new Fusion bonded poly-tipped product line will be initially released in nine cartridge options. This will bring the grand total of products bearing the Fusion name to 54. The all-new Fusion Tipped initial offerings will include 300 BLK 190-grain, 6.5 PRC 140-grain, 6.5 Creedmoor 140-grain, 270 Win. 150-grain, 7MM Rem. Mag. 175-grain, 7MM PRC 175-grain, 308 Win. 180-grain, 30-06 Sprg. 180-grain, and 300 Win. Mag. 180-grain. Its 20-count boxes range in price from $44.99 to $81.99 depending on cartridge choice. FUSION TIPPED TERMINAL SUBSONIC: FILLING A VOID Federal customers have repeatedly asked for a subsonic Fusion 300 Blackout round. Development of a terminal subsonic round began before Fusion Tipped was initiated. However, it quickly became apparent a tipped design would be needed for optimal performance. With the introduction of Fusion Tipped, Federal's engineers found a perfect path to the ultimate 300 Blackout hunting round. Fusion Tipped Terminal Subsonic 300 Blackout will be offered along with the rest of the Fusion Tipped line in 2024. stories from the land 01

A rare mammoth tusk was discovered by a hunter at the O2 Ranch in West Texas, sparking excitement among researchers. Initially skeptical, ranch manager Will Juett contacted the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University, where experts confirmed the tusk’s authenticity. The tusk, found in a creek bed, is an isolated specimen with no other remains nearby. Researchers carefully excavated the tusk for further study, with carbon dating results expected soon. Rene Ramirez, an eighth-generation Texan, successfully halted the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) plan to expand U.S. Highway 83 through his family’s historic El Milagro Ranch in Zapata County. The ranch, rooted in a 1760s Spanish land grant, faced potential division by a proposed 300-foot-wide highway median. Through persistent advocacy and political support, Ramirez convinced TxDOT to reroute the expansion eastward, preserving the ranch’s core structures. This victory underscores the importance of property rights and has spurred legislative efforts to reform eminent domain procedures in Texas. During an environmental review for the Loop 88 expansion near Lubbock, TxDOT officials uncovered prehistoric remains, likely from a giant ground sloth and possibly other Ice Age megafauna. The area, once home to Ice Age-era lakes, served as vital water sources for ancient animals and early humans. TxDOT is working with the Museum of Texas Tech University to study and preserve the findings. If evidence of prehistoric human activity is discovered, construction plans may be reconsidered to protect historical artifacts. WHY I TRUST SKY SENDEROS: A RANCHER’S EXPERIENCE WITH THERMAL DRONE WILDLIFE SURVEYS BY MICHAEL LOVE

For over 14 years, I’ve managed an 1,100-acre family ranch in Seymour, Texas. Like many landowners practicing Level 3 Wildlife Management, I've spent countless hours trying to keep an accurate count of our deer population. I’ve personally reviewed 25,000 to 30,000 trail camera photos every single year, spending 40 to 50 hours sorting, printing, and labeling bucks, does, and the occasional fawn. It became a full-time job I never signed up for. Seven and a half years ago, I asked my Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist whether drone technology could help make the process more accurate and efficient. At the time, it wasn’t an approved method, so I tried working with a few recommended individuals. One simply didn’t have the tools to do the job well. Another was accurate, but far too expensive for a family-run operation, and he insisted on flying twice a year. So I kept doing it myself. Until I didn’t want to anymore. That’s when I turned to Google, hoping there was finally a Texas-based company that could deliver what I needed: a reasonably priced, accurate (90% plus) game count, broken down by antlered vs. non-antlered deer, and ideally, one that could identify fawns, even in January. That’s how I found Sky Senderos. What caught my attention initially was that they were based in Austin. I visit Austin often and liked the idea of working with someone local enough to meet face-to-face. After a phone call and a good conversation, I took a leap of faith and scheduled a January survey. That night, the wind was howling. I used to fly jets in the Navy, and I can tell you with confidence: flying a drone in those conditions would challenge even the most skilled pilots. But the two Sky Senderos pilots who showed up were professional, polite, and determined. They gave it a valiant shot, flew for hours, drained every battery, and ultimately came back in, frustrated but unwilling to deliver sub-par data. What happened next told me everything I needed to know about this company. The following morning, I got up early, around 6 a.m., expecting they’d already left for their next job. Instead, I stepped outside 88

TEXASRANCHJOURNAL.COM

and heard the soft hum of a drone in the distance. They had gotten up at 4 a.m., checked the wind, and headed back out on their own. No prompt from me. No expectation that they had to. They just did it because they wanted to get it right. That kind of initiative speaks volumes. Within 24 hours, I had a preliminary report: 19 bucks, 48 does, and 23 fawns. I had some questions, especially about younger bucks that might not show up clearly on thermal imaging, such as spikes and 3-pointers. However, Ethan, the founder, reassured me that the final report would clarify everything. And it did: 26 bucks, 43 does, and 23 fawns. Total: 92 deer. Now here’s the kicker. I purposely hadn’t told Ethan or his team how many deer I believed were on the property. I didn’t want to bias their results. But based on 14 years of trail cam reviews and the input from my three hunting sons, I knew we had between 85 and 95 deer, with 27 to 30 bucks. Their numbers were almost spot-on. Someone might ask, "If you already knew the population so well, why pay for this at all?" Because I’m 79 years old, and I’d rather spend my time enjoying the photos, identifying cull bucks or potential trophies, not sifting through tens of thousands of pictures. Once a year, I want to hand it off to someone I trust and get a clean, accurate breakdown. Sky Senderos gave me that. They’ve invested in the technology, equipment I can’t even imagine the cost of, and more importantly, they’ve invested in people who take pride in doing the job right. Their flexibility with timing, their affordability, and their integrity are why I’m already planning to have them back next January. If you’re managing wildlife and want a reliable, efficient, and honest partner to help you do it, I can’t recommend Sky Senderos highly enough. You’re welcome to call me. I’ll tell you the same thing I’m writing here. Thanks again to Ethan and his team. You’ve earned my trust. Michael Love - Seymour, Texas
