by Lucy Steeds In search of an interview with a celebrated but elusive artist, Joseph, a young journalist and conscientious objector, travels to Provence during the scorching summer of 1920. The object of his quest is Edouard “Tata” Tartuffe who, after escaping Paris many years earlier - following a fight with Paul Cézanne over a woman, some believe - has hidden himself away in rural France, refusing the attention of the outside world. Until Joseph begins uncertainly to enter their existence, Tata’s principal companion has been his niece, Ettie. Joseph is permitted to observe and write about Tata, albeit under certain conditions: he must be quiet, and must stay sufficiently still to be the model for the artist’s ‘Man with Orange’. Watching Tata paint, the younger man begins gradually to understand both the artist’s process, and Ettie’s role in it, as every day she creates the perfect conditions in which Tata can work. Ettie remains silent for most of each day, occupied in choosing and preparing meals not for their flavour or nutritional value, but for their beauty to the eye of the artist. Meals are often snatched away mid-mouthful so that Tata can use them in a new composition. But at night, Ettie steals away to an outbuilding, herself to paint. Immersed in their strange artistic world, Joseph begins to peel

Observing the emotional trap in which the two are caught, Joseph himself comes to recognise his own inner imprisonment. Setting her characters in the sweltering summer heat, Steeds exposes skilfully the degree to which each is trapped – whether it be physically, emotionally or mentally – confined in prisons to which only they hold the key. She shows that breaking away from the known can be deeply uncomfortable, no matter how unbearable the status quo has become, and that in small acts of defiance and rebellion we keep ourselves alive. The perfect book for a summer like 2026, the reader empathises with the characters’ struggle to think rationally and keep their tempers under a remorseless sun, searching for shade and a cool respite from the unrelenting march of time. To Have & To Hold Records are 6 years old! When the avuncular proprietor Mel Hardy opened the doors to his record shop in 2020, knowing full well the nation’s high streets were in a precarious place, such was his business acumen, Mel also timed his venture to coincide with the Covid lock-down... Since then, To Have & To Hold Records has become as much a fixture on Tewkesbury’s high street as the towering Abbey, clanking medieval knights, Tewkesbury mustard and, of course, ubiquitous parking fines. Over the last 6 years many have parked themselves in front of the racks of vinyl, both new and pre-loved and delved into a trove of musical treasure. Furthermore, the shop can also offer literature, compact discs, coasters, cassettes, badges, artwork and more than a handful of gig going anecdotes. We have to concur that Mel has achieved a great deal in his 6 years at the helm. Sure, there has been some fluff on the needle and there has been some skips and jumps along the way. Coincidently, even a nervous Rod Stewart sang from behind the speakers at the first few
Faces gigs (sic). Anecdotally, Mel is also instrumental in bringing music events to his home town of Theoc. Whether that be in the form of cinematic nights at the Roses, band nights at the Watson Hall or Gothic extravaganzas at the Guppy to celebrate Halloween. Mel is always looking to offer Tewkesbury a good night out! It’s sobering to realise that singing Hap-
py Birthday on screen would have cost a great deal of money pre-2016, as Warner/Chappell music covetously owned the rights to the song. This is the reason most films insisted on employing a substitute song or interrupted the song before the intro (sic). What I’m trying to say is, it costs nothing to call in and wish Mel Happy Birthday at his shop...for he’s a jolly good fellow. By Nicholas Burford.

LITERATURE FESTIVAL LINE UP IS REVEALED The line-up for next month’s much anticipated Cheltenham Literature Festival has now been announced. Running in a variety of venues across the town from 9th-18th October, there are both ticketed and free events which will appeal to book lovers of all ages. It is the world’s longest-running literature festival and leads the way in celebrating the written and spoken word. This year the festival will present some of the best new voices in fiction and poetry, plus literary greats and celebrity authors. Remembering the local author, Laurie Lee Among our local authors of the past, Laurie Lee’s works are still popular today. He is probably best known for ‘Cider with Rosie’ which was written in 1959 and eventually formed the first part of a trilogy, along with ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and ‘A Moment of War’ (1991). Born in Stroud in 1914, his family then moved to the outlying village of Slad at the end of the war. The village captured Laurie’s heart and was encapsulated in the opening scenes of ‘Cider with Rosie’, which was autobiographical and became a book studied in schools as well as inspiring several media productions. Slad cemented his love of rural life and countryside walks. Laurie Lee died in 1997, having lived a vivid and productive life during his 83 years which he drew on for his writing, including poetry and screenplays. When he left home, he went to live and work in London, from where he travelled to Spain in 1935 - making contacts that pulled him back there two years later to fight in the Spanish Civil War. His experiences there form the basis of the final two books in the trilogy. The success of ‘Cider with Rosie’ allowed Laurie to become a full time writer. Up to that stage he had been a journalist and scriptwriter, including a year working as a ‘caption writer’ for the Festival of Britain in 1952, for which he was awarded an MBE. In his latter years Laurie continued to work and make public appearances, including attending the Hay Festival in 1995, which many people still remember with affection as he was a witty, warm man - although something of an enigma.

Fun run for local charity Now it its fifteenth year, the annual Alderton 5k fun run will be held on Saturday 5th September. Starting at 11.00am at the village playing fields, (GL20 8NL) this year’s event is in aid of Alderton Acorns - the village’s Pre-School and Toddlers facility. Open to runners of all abilities, the race takes place in the beautiful rural surroundings of Alderton - which is easily reached from Tewkesbury off the B4077, between the roundabout at Teddington Hands and Toddington. Beginners, experienced athletes, under 16s, pushchairs and escorted runners are all welcome. There are medals and finish-line photos for all those who complete the course.

WI Newtown ladies on a hot date Our summer outing in August was a scorcher. At Pershore around 11am, and hoping for a lazy Thai lunch, the big question was where to park for maximum shade and convenience and minimum cost. Some even had to move their cars part-way through the meal - but that meal was well worth it. Scrumptious. There is a little palace behind that green door, with exquisite service and amazing decor.

We planned our annual summer outing to the very beautiful shopping, mooching and inspirational Burford Garden Centre months and months ago never guessing it would be in middle of a serious heatwave in drought conditions! Bearing in mind the high temperatures forecast and after considerable thought we decided not to cancel but leave the decision to individual members whether to join the trip. A fairsized intrepid group were still keen, so we donned our summer dresses and set off from the Village Hall in Forthampton. Unexpected road closures sent us in all directions but we rendezvoused for coffee at the garden centre then split to explore the many departments with their lovely quality goods. Everything from slate garden plant labels and gardening paraphernalia including seeds & corms, stylish women’s and men’s clothes, squashy sofas, a forest of indoor plants, everything you would ever need or not need for your kitchen, delicious food and wine, greetings cards and beautiful colourful stationary, lampshades, textiles and pottery and the list goes on. The garden centre has a large bright eating area and lots of good things to eat so lunch was enjoyed by us all accompanied by carafes of chilled water, so welcome. The pleasant ambiance of this extremely large space was enhanced by a pianist at a shiny black grand piano and classical guitarist. Last but not least if you’re looking for a huge terracotta pot or container or just or tiny pot for a precious plant it’s there, and many fabulous flowering plants which were looking good bearing in mind the punishing sunshine we’ve had recently. By mid afternoon we were wilting slightly so the many other areas which include a bookshop, art gallery, children’s toys will have to wait for another visit! We all enjoyed our outing and a chance to share this time together and fair to say we probably all came away with a brown carrier bag with something special to remember the day. The weather rarely tallies with those strict timetables any more, and the garden certainly doesn’t read the calendar. Instead, look out of the window, check the weather reports and trust a little bit of instinct. I’m pruning shrubs now, provided there are no nesting birds. Hedges will come next. Many bird species will have had two broods this year and, although the second batch rarely does particularly well, the last thing they need is gardeners making their lives harder — or shorter. And pigeons count as birds. My main guide at this time of year is heat and stress. Evergreens mostly hate being cut in hot weather, while diseases love conditions that are warm and wet, so it pays
to use some sense. Even soft-leaved deciduous plants can object. Cornus, for example, can sulk if it is pruned when the weather is too warm as its loses too much moisture through cut leaves. I’m still watering, particularly anything that looks stressed. The aim is to give plants a chance to recover while they are not being blasted by heat. Feeding with anything containing more than 2 per cent nitrogen is also out of the question for the time being. There is little point encouraging a flush of soft new growth when the weather is making life difficult. You may also be able to take a few cuttings now. I’ve been doggedly trying throughout the year, after the reliable spring cutting season
and a few have struck, although plenty have struggled. I root mine in water, partly because it works for some plants, but mainly because it doesn’t matter if I forget about them occasionally. There is something reassuringly forgiving about a jar of cuttings sitting on a windowsill next to trays of tiny seedlings saved from the hoe in the beds. So, rather than fol-

lowing a list of jobs dictated by the date, I’m watching the plants, the weather and the conditions. September is not a deadline, it is simply what is happening in the garden today.

NEW BIKE NIGHTS AT THE GERRY CAN The Gerry Can - a brand new coffee shop on the A38 between Tewkesbury and Upton-upon-Severn, has launched prize bike nights every Friday. Joint proprietor Ayesha said: “We are having bike nights every Friday from 5pm with a winner drawn every time at 7pm. “There’s a chance to win the ‘Bike Of The Night’ award, which gets the winner a trophy and a plaque on our fence of fame. Bonanza of biker events September will be a busy month for local venues who have agreed to host motorbikers’ meets for Bikers’ Nite volunteers, writes Shelby Powell. We start with the Kings Head meet at Bishop’s Cleeve on the 2nd, which is followed by a night out at the popular Aviator Café located at Gloucestershire Airport on the 9th. A bit further afield there’s a rally planned on the 16th at The Yew Tree, off Stock Lane in Chaceley Stock and bikers will be riding to Wyre Piddle gathering at The Anchor Inn, off Main Road on 23rd. The last Wednesday meet of the month is based off A38 at the
Bikers’ Nite at the Kings Head, Bishop’s Cleeve Fromebridge Mill near Whitminister. The starting time is around 5.30pm for each meeting. Everyone is welcome whether you are on two wheels or three.
It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded motor bike enthusiasts of all ages as well as having the opportunity of fundraising for the Midlands Air Ambulance charity and supporting a local business. Bike riders may also be interested to hear about the opening of the Gerry Can café at Brockeridge Road at Ripple (located by the truck parking lay-by) being a biker friendly destination offering coffee, cake, and light snacks.

Films of the ‘River Stories - A Town Called To Speak’ event held at the Roses Theatre in the spring are now available to view online. Born out of conversations and creative workshops with local children and elders organised by Severn StoryLab, the project was designed to encourage the sharing of stories and dreams inspired by Tewkesbury’s past, present and possible future. A script was produced and given to drama students at the University of the West of England, who performed the play at the Roses back in March. With the help of Yellowshark Recording Studios and funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Severn StoryLab were able to make three films to help share the event with people who were unable to attend on the day - and those who want to relive the experiences. There is an 11 minute trailer, a 38 minute film of the play only, and a 44 minute version which includes commentary from the Severn StoryLab research team and audience interactions. Laverton to Buckland and back Sitting just below the Cotswold edge south of Broadway, the neighbouring villages of Laverton nestle comfortably away from the main tourist trail, writes Jack B. Walker.
Distance: approx 1.5 miles; easy terrain. Car Parking: with respect to residents, in the centre of Laverton (off the B4632). Refreshments: nearby Broadway has a wide choice of cafés, restaurants and historic inns. There is also the Pheasant Inn at Toddington on the B4632, en-route to/from Tewkesbury. For many years, this has been one of my favourite short strolls, which visits two of the Cotswolds’ best kept secrets - the quiet villages of Laverton and Buckland. It is beautiful at any time of year too, but particularly enjoyable on a late summer evening in my book. Neither village is on a ‘through route’ and as there are no inns or major attractions, they are mostly overlooked by visitors to the area. Although the route is fairly easy going, some of the paths are also bridleways - so they can be muddy at certain times of year. Park carefully in Laverton village, which is off the B4632 Toddington to Broadway road.
Peaceful Laverton At the top of the village, where lanes meet and there is a triangle of grass in the road, look for a path on the left which leads past an old phone box (1) that now serves as the village book exchange (see picture below left). Walk along this good track, until you pass a farm on the right (2) and then emerge on to the village street at Buckland (3). Turn right and walk up this rather lovely nothrough road. Look out for Buckland Rectory n the left - one of the earliest buildings of its kind in England. It is possible to walk down to the stream at the
side of the rectory and onwards to Broadway if you are feeling particularly energetic, or just to take in the tranquil byway (pictured below). Further along the

street, on the right, is the fascinating galleried parish church, which serves both villages. Behind this is Buckland Manor, now an upmarket hotel. As the street bears left to ascend the hill, walk ahead on to a track (4) and after a short distance turn right (5) and through a gate, so the grounds of Buckland Manor are to your right. Follow the routemarkers across the fields and through the gates until you meet a track coming down from the Cotswolds (6). Turn right and follow the lane back down into Laverton Village.

Probus Club welcomes Gloucestershire’s Queen Selecting speakers for our weekly Probus meetings can sometimes be risky. Even the most fascinating subject can fall flat if the presentation fails to engage. That is why it is always a pleasure to welcome back a speaker who has consistently impressed our members. One such favourite is Mike Bottomley, who has now visited our Club for the fourth time. On every occasion he has received outstanding feedback, and his latest presentation on Katherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, was no exception. Mike began by reminding us of the fate of Henry’s six wives: two were divorced, two were executed, and two died naturally. He then focused on Katherine Parr, the last Queen Consort of the Tudor dynasty,
who outlived Henry by almost two years. Married four times, she was England’s most-married Queen and also became the first English woman to publish an original work in print under her own name. As always, Mike’s extensive historical knowledge was matched by his flair for presentation. Dressed in period costume as one of Henry VIII’s trusted supporters, he brought Tudor history vividly to life through a combination of storytelling, music and video.

A particular highlight was a series of professionally produced video sequences featuring a local actress portraying Katherine Parr. Beautifully dressed in Tudor costume and delivering extracts from Katherine’s prayers and writings with conviction, she created a moving portrayal of the Queen. Mike complemented these performances by recreating conversations between Katherine and her court advisers, giving the audience a real sense of the personalities and politics of the Tudor court. The presentation captured the intrigue and atmosphere of Henry VIII’s reign while revealing the remarkable story of a Queen who rose from relative obscurity to play a significant role in English history. Mike concluded by describing Katherine Parr’s final resting place at Sudeley Castle, where her lead coffin was rediscovered beneath the floor of the ruined chapel in 1782, more than two centuries after her

SEVERN UNIT MVS ATTENDS VJ DAY COMMEMORATION Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was invited to join Tewkesbury Royal British Legion for the VJ Day Commemoration on Sunday 16th August. The Unit gathered for the service with members of the Legion outside the Town Hall, along with Tewkesbury Town Mayor Emma Ash and other members of the council, with the Reverend Charles Whitney (Chaplain to Tewkesbury British Legion) leading the prayers. Head of unit Nic Price said “the occasion was even more poignant as the town was mourning the recent death of Michael Kean-Price, who had shown unwavering dedication to Tewkesbury whilst serving at their beloved Town Crier and Town Sergeant for 26 years. He retired two years ago but still remained a prominent
member of the local Royal British Legion. “The current Town Crier Richard Whincup also gave a very touch-
ing and moving tribute to his predecessor and great friend, who will be so sadly missed by us all.”

Broadway railway station now has a second new-build waiting room. Built to the original 1904 design, it has been constructed by a small team of volunteers at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. The single storey structure consists of a blue engineering brick base with red finishing bricks, matched to the original colour. The complicated, but ingenious, canopy A steel canopy sits atop the structure at Broadway building, which has been fabricated on site. The complex steel structure was built using the hot rivet process a method used to build most of the modern world up until the 1950s. The method is no longer used because arc welding steel is now the norm as it is a lot faster. A riveted structure, however, is much more pleasing to the eye - and the self-taught team of volunteers are probably world leaders in reviving this process. Visitors can see the work for themselves on railway running days.

Admin Club: a little help to get life’s admin done We all have them. The emails that keep getting left unanswered, the forms that need completing, the appointments that need booking, the paperwork that really should be sorted out… and somehow the list just keeps getting longer! From September, The Exchange at 73 Barton Street, Tewkesbury is introducing Admin Club a friendly, welcoming space for people to sit down, focus and finally get some of those personal admin jobs done. Admin Club is a natural addition to the community already established at The Exchange. Sometimes, simply getting out of the house and working alongside other people can make all the difference. Having a dedicated time and place to focus can make those jobs feel much more manageable. Admin Club is for individuals with business or personal admin. Whether someone needs to tackle a pile of paperwork, sort an inbox, complete an application, organise a diary, deal with online accounts or simply catch up on the things they’ve been putting off, they can bring it along. The organisers will give a brief intro, before everyone settles down to work on their own to-do list. The Fulltone Orchestra returns to Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 26th September (7.30pm) with the New World Symphony -a programme pairing Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 with three of cinema’s most recognisable scores. The concert will be conducted by the orchestra’s founder and musical director, anthony Brown, and features fifty musicians drawn from the South West. The programme opens with John Barry’s suite from ‘Dances with Wolves’ and James Horner’ ‘Titanic Suite’ before Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’, performed by violin soloist Katy Smith. The second half of the concert is given to Dvorak’s Ninth, written in 1893 and among the most performed symphonies in the repertoire, closing a programme that moves between film and concert hall. Tewkesbury Abbey is one of the largest parish churches in England,
and the orchestra has performed there previously as part of its programme of concerts in major cathedrals and abbey across the region to great aplomb Tewkesbury Abbey is always packed out when Fulltone perform. This promises to be a concert of great scale and beauty. Over the last 200 years, Gloucestershire has lost countless acres of orchard, and consequently many varieties of apple unique to the area. As supermarkets have become the main source for people buying apples year round rather that seasonally, our local stores no longer sell the varieties that were once peculiar to an area. Fascinating Farming Lives in C17th Ripple St Mary’s Church, Ripple will hold its annual Heritage Open Weekend on 12th and 13th September during national Heritage Open Days 2026. The national theme for this year’s event is “Everyday Histories”. As an ancient agricultural parish, the Ripple heritage team will focus on the everyday histories of its farming community. With more than 1,000 years behind them, they will narrow the window to the first half of the 17th Century when many of the old houses in Ripple were built, when the English Civil War overran the Parish and when their celebrated farm worker, The Ripple Giant, gave his life in a daring wager. Over the weekend there will be History and Heritage displays and Bell Tower tours, many important Heritage features to see, activities
for children, 17th and 21st century refreshments, a self-guided Village History Walk, toilets and parking. Everyone is invited, children are encouraged, dogs are welcome. There is no cost, although donations are always very welcome. St Mary’s famous 15th Century Misericords - hinged seats for monks and clergy - tell the stories of rural life through their intricate carvings, illustrating the tasks of each month of the year …sowing, reaping, killing the pig for winter. One such seat celebrates Lammas Day and is the only Misericord of its kind in existence. St Mary’s will bring each of these carvings to life in text

dating back to 680AD when a charter granted land for the building of a minster. The present church, which is Grade I Listed, was built in 1190 and remains much the same. Ripple itself is a historic community dating back to the 7th century with origins in the Iron Age and a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Treasure finds aren’t just about gold and glory; they are missing puzzle pieces of our collective community heritage and transform through research from exciting new discoveries into documented history. This talk demystifies the treasure process from the initial spark
of discovery in the field to the rigorous stages of reporting, valuation, and rewards. It will explore the journey an object takes as it transitions from a “find” to a national asset….. although not always! ■ AN EVENING OF GHOST STORIES Join Behind the Door Productions for ‘An Evening of ‘Ghost Stories’ at the Old Baptist Chapel: ACT 1: In Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story, ‘The Signalman’, we follow a railway signalman who keeps watch over a damp, and gloomy railway cutting. Upon questioning, he reveals that he has been haunted by spectral warnings of impending train disasters. ACT 2: In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘Lot No. 249’, we follow Abercrombie Smith, a student who investigates a series of supernatural occurrences linked to his neighbour, Edward Bellingham. Edward, an Oxford student, holds possession of an ancient Egyptian mummy which he appears to have been using to stalk his enemies. This is a candlelit performance taking place in the Old Baptist Chapel and will begin at 7pm. In this one-man performance, Toby Burchell performs two chilling tales by the finest writers of the ghost story genre. Heritage Open Day Foraging Walk Search for tasty treats growing in and around the woods. Explore Warden’s Wood and West Down with foraging tutor Rob Gould, aka Cotswold Forager, and Nicole Daw of Cleeve Common Trust. With over 30 years of foraging experience under his belt, Rob will guide us through the wild edibles we find on our walk, both those that are already fairly well known and some less common, whilst Nicole will be there to talk a bit about the history of the woods and wider area, along with what work is being/has been done to improve the area for wildlife. Due to the varied habits we will cover – ancient woodland and hedgerow, modern planted forestry, minimally managed pasture
– we can expect to see a wide selection of edible species, which at this time of year will be dominated by autumn fruits and berries. As you walk, Rob will talk to you about key identification points for species, possible lookalikes, ways of making use of them, and also the many ways of preserving them for use later in the year, along with answering questions that come up. During the walk you will also get to try a selection of snacks, incorporating wild items that are growing right now,
as well as some that have been preserved from previous seasons. Can you please there-

Severn Unit MVS on Duty at Evesham Medieval Festival At the beginning of August Tewkesbury based Severn Unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service took three boats for the 7 hour trip up to Evesham for the Medieval Festival and 1265 Battle Re-Enactment which is the largest 13th century actual battle re-enactment of the year. Head of Unit Nic Price said “The Unit was kept very busy during that weekend as they ran two safety boats and patrolled the river in the area of the festival. During the event an elderly lady lost her footing and fell down the steep bank landing in the river but was spotted by the crew of MVS Minerva who were on hand to assist a member of the public who had also seen the incident and had jumped in to help her. The Unit deployed a lifebuoy and Severn Unit member John Huckvale swam ashore with an emergency blanket and helped get the lady upto the top of the bank where she received first aid assistance. Happily she was largely unharmed but greatly relieved to be back on dry land.”

Battle of Tewkesbury 1471 The Battle of Tewkesbury 1471 was one of the most decisive engagements in the War of the Roses, where King Edward IV and his House of York force completely overwhelmed the force from the House of Lancaster, at a location one mile to the south of the town. THE STORY OF EDUCATION IN TEWKESBURY A PROPOSAL FOR HERITAGE OPEN DAYS Heritage Open Days is a national initiative managed by the National Trust which aims to raise awareness of local history, in all its many facets. Events within the programme are locally proposed and organised, the only rule being that they have to be free to visit. Each year has a theme, and for 2026 it is ‘Exploring daily working life through the ages’. Dates are September 11th to 20th. Events do not have to be over the whole period. This proposal is for an event as part of the programme, to be based at Elizabeth Wyatt Hall, and about the history of general education in Tewkesbury.
