Beatrice is the daughter of a former suffragette, with a mother who has little time or patience for her. Dora is weighed down by grief at the loss first of her fiancé, then her brother, in the space of two weeks at the Battle of Cambrai. Otto, a wealthy socialite of whom little is expected, rebels against her family and finds solace in studying maths. Marianne, motherless daughter of a village rector, perplexes the others by leaving Oxford to return to her country home evey other weekend. The world they inhabit is still reeling from a war of unprecedented destruction, as a generation of damaged and frightened young people to heal their shattered lives. The university’s women students are subjected to stifling misogyny, but between The Eights - named after their shared corridor - a strong, supportive friendship develops, in which they begin to experience freedoms denied them by their family lives and college restrictions. Despite the many and varied challenges of university life, they are simply - as Otto says - ordinary people grasping the opportunity of an extraordinary education. From curfews and chaperones to responsions and rustications, it is made abundantly clear to female undergraduates that they must succeed beyond question. Although an undeniable double standard, to do otherwise is to undermine the fragile process that has permitted them to enrol at Oxford in the first place. As a friend of her mother tells Beatrice, persistence and ingenuity are the key to change. An atmospheric and compelling portrait of four women on the cusp of an historic moment, The Eights also reminds the reader that rights are often hard won, and even then perhaps only grudgingly conceded. In 2026, with women’s right under renewed assault in many countries, it serves as a call to attention - change is far from automatic, and when achieved must be treasured and protected. Tewkesbury’s historic Black Bear, which dates back to 1308, will be hosting Halloween crafts and trails on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October, with a fancy dress competition on Saturday afternoon. Adults can don their spookiest costumes and enjoy live music on the Saturday evening - see page 16 for full details. There’s also a special family Halloween Trail on Friday 30th October, starting from Cleeve Hill

TWYNING WI BACK LIFESAVING CAMPAIGN Twyning WI are trying to raise awareness of a lifesaving issue: that women are significantly less likely than men to receive bystander CPR during a cardiac arrest. Research suggests this may be due to fears around touching the chest and bra area and/or concerns about accusations of inappropriate behaviour. To show that bystanders can be lifesavers, they are holding free emergency life aid sessions between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 7th November, at Twyning Village Hall (GL20 6DG). Sessions will start every hour on the hour and run for about fifty minutes. Refreshments are available and donations are available. For more details contact alison@twyning.net or call 07789 371521.

The Berkeley Arms looked like cruising to a dominant win after three tables, by leading 11-4, but Bredon FC fought back by winning their last two Tables with 4-1 scores, which were not enough to stop Berkeley Arms lifting the Hylda Roberts Bowl with a 13-12 win.

These are thoughtful people who try to make it a better place. There is a Tewkesbury Borough Council scheme that encourages volunteers to come forward. Litter Picking training is provided online as well as hi-viz clothing, litter grabbers and red council litter bags. Pickers go out and clean up and full bags can be left tied up at the roadside to be picked up by refuse collectors. This good scheme is open to anyone who wishes to register. Head of Severn Unit Nic Price said “The scenario for this multi agency training exercise was that there had been a boat collision which caused a serious boat fire and there were 30 casualties either injured or missing. Gloucester Fire and Rescue simulated the fire on the deck of MVS Minerva which was moored at anchor in the middle of the river and using one of their smoke machines and a generator were able to make the fire look most realistic. There were casualties on her deck and in
the cabin which needed urgent attention but first they had the problem of pulling the boat ashore as she was supposed to have lost propulsion. Bronze Control was very grateful to the Unit for their help in manning Minerva throughout and also providing safety boat cover on the river. Altogether nearly 200 members of the emergency services from Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties participated in this search and rescue exercise and it was good that the MVS was very much
involved and it gave our members an opportunity
to work with the emergency services”.

The theatre has been granted £150,000 over three years by in an agreement which officials say “builds on success.” “The Roses Theatre is a huge part of our community and a real asset to the borough,” says Councillor Richard Stanley, Lead Member for Economic Development and Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council. “It plays a vital role in local life and the economy, already bringing £2.1m into the town and surrounding area every year. This investment builds on that success, giving the theatre the stability to continue to grow as a vibrant cultural hub.” The Roses celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in late 2025, and during its anniversary season has emphasised a range of community outreach. More than 500 people a week benefit from the theatre’s various community-facing sessions, including both children and older people. More than 80,000 people a year attend its productions, with a third of them coming from outside of the borough.

Nonetheless, the Roses is thriving creatively. “2026 has been such an exciting year for The Roses and Tewkesbury,” says Derek Bond, who was appointed the theatre’s Artistic Director in September 2025. “We’ve enjoyed a 13% ticket sales increase year on year and achieved a £2.26m impact on the local economy. “Our partnership with Tewkesbury Borough Council is such a fantastic opportunity to redouble this growth and real-

Bayeux Tapestry exhibition is GARDENS OPEN coming to Tewkesbury Abbey
under the National Gardens Scheme
Tewkesbury Abbey is set to bring one of history's greatest stories to life this autumn with ‘From Conquest to Kingdom – The Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Heritage Trail’, opening on 22nd October. Set within one of Britain's finest Norman buildings, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the story of 1066 inside the very world it created. It features a full-scale printed reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry, immersed in Tewkesbury Abbey's own Norman heritage. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the British Museum, as part of Bayeux Around Britain, supported by World Quant. The Bayeux Tapestry is a 70-metre-long masterpiece telling the story of the conquest of England in 1066 by William, Duke of Normandy. Through 58 scenes, 626 characters and 202 horses, the Tapestry gives an account of the medieval period in Normandy and England like no other. At Tewkesbury Abbey, visitors can step inside the world it created and explore more than 80 years of history through kings and

queens, faith and power, architecture, craftsmanship and everyday life. Moving beyond the famous scenes of the Battle of Hastings, From Conquest to Kingdom explores how the Norman Conquest transformed England and how the new kingdom developed between 1066 and 1154. Visitors will encounter the stories of remarkable individuals who shaped both England and Tewkesbury Abbey, including Queen Matilda, Robert Fitzhamon and Robert FitzRoy. The exhibition is divided into two con-
nected chapters. Conquest explores the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror's victory and the dramatic birth of Norman England through the full-scale reproduction of the tapestry. Kingdom then looks beyond the battlefield to reveal how the Norman Conquest reshaped everyday life. New rulers, ideas and architecture transformed England's landscape, while faith, monastic traditions, craftsmanship, fashion and music helped create a vibrant new society. For the people of
South West England and beyond, Tewkesbury Abbey provides a remarkable regional perspective on this national story, perfect for those unable to visit the London exhibition. Founded within decades of the Conquest, the Abbey’s soaring Norman architecture bears witness to the ambition, faith and craftsmanship of the period. The Norman Heritage Trail allows visitors to discover the people, places and ideas that shaped the medieval world around them. The result is an exhibition in which the setting is as important as the story itself. Standing beneath Europe's largest Romanesque tower, visitors encounter Tewkesbury Abbey not simply as the home of the exhibition, but as one of its greatest exhibits. The exhibition is free, entrance to the Abbey is by voluntary donation. It will run from Thursday 22nd October until Sunday 11th July next year.

The speaker this month was Kate Peake. Kate is a local film maker and she has produced a marvellous series of films covering the making of the A417 ‘Missing Link’ road which will alleviate the bottleneck at Birdlip and the Golden Heart public house en-route to Cirencester and the M4 at Swindon. Our members were in for a treat as Kate uses a drone for arial filming and as this road system covers such diverse landscape we were able to see the scale but also the fantastic detail the designers and roadbuilders have created. This vast bypass project was 30 years in the planning but in 2022 permission was granted and a year later work started on this 2nd largest infrastructure project in the country after HS2 and we started to see for ourselves the golden moonscape of disturbed Cotswold limestone rock when me travelled up the Cotswold Escarpment on the existing A417. Kate commentated all through the films explaining the order things were happening and all the historical background which are part of the site covering the three major archaeological areas of Barrow Wake, Leckhampton Hillfort and Crickley Hillfort – all of archaeological and ecological importance and sensitivity.

She told and showed us the demolition of the Air Balloon public house and the two protected apple trees in the pub garden which still stand today amongst the mountains of crushed rock and gigantic machines working the landscape. More details emerged of the mitigations that are being made for flora and fauna disturbed by this huge road system. 100 large Roman Snails were moved to alternative places as were the many adders and grass snakes and lizards and special guards were erected to prevent their re-entry. Bats have had a special windowless house built for them (which they’ve now colonised) and as they don’t like to cross busy roads overhead, underpasses

TEWKESBURY NATURE RESERVE AWARDED £250,000 GRANT Tewkesbury Nature Reserve has been awarded £250,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help transform the way local people care for, learn about and protect one of Gloucestershire's community nature reserves. Made possible thanks to National Lottery players, the funding will enable the charity to deliver an ambitious programme that creates lasting benefits for wildlife, volunteers and local communities, ensuring that the Reserve continues to thrive. Tewkesbury Nature Reserve is a unique 44hectare community nature reserve that provides vital habitats for wildlife and a place where people can connect with nature on their doorstep. The new project, entitled Green Lung 2.0 (GL2.0): Developing TNR as an urban ‘green lung’ for community and nature recovery, will focus on strengthening community eco-stewardship and citizen science opportunities. Through an expanded programme of learning, volunteering and outreach, the project will help more people of all ages and backgrounds develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for nature. It will also build new opportunities for people to become Lead Volunteers and Community Nature Guardians, creating a growing net-

Following the great success of the first community day at the Abbey This Is Tewkesbury is to return next year. But not until the Autumn. Unfortunately, the Abbey is almost fully booked on Saturdays next summer, mainly, of course, for weddings. Rather than look elsewhere – and what venue can compare – we have decided to move the event to Saturday, 18 September 2027. Please note that in your diaries now. Although this is after the summer holidays, we hope it will attract as many groups and visitors as this year. For 2028, we have asked the Abbey to pencil in dates in June and September, allowing us to stick with Autumn or revert to early Summer. Many, many thanks to the 70 local community groups, public services and a few small community businesses who came together to showcase what happens in Tewkesbury, and the power of real community. Immediately after June’s event, we invited participating groups to complete a feedback questionnaire. The results were very positive, but there were some things we could do better. We hope to address some of these, at least, over the next few months. So next year will be the same community focused event, only better. Finally, we are developing an online list of community groups, public services and small community- facing businesses for pub-

Loudly delivered in a startled theatrical voice, ‘A Handbag?’ is still instantly recognised by many as a line delivered by the incongruous Lady Bracknell from ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The play was written by Oscar Wilde, who was born on the sixteenth of this month in 1854, 172 years ago. Amazingly, it has stood the test of time and is still performed worldwide, from local community halls to West End revivals. The humour based around the hypocrisy of Victorian society and the confusion caused by its plot makes the characters highly entertaining to watch and also great fun to play. Although only living until the age of 46, Oscar Wilde produced a range of literary work, encompassing many styles and different mediums, for both children and adults. Although coming from a wealthy, intellectual background, Oscar Wilde became wealthy in his own right. The gothic novel ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ became his first major success in 1890. Unfortunately, his private life led him away from his wife and two sons ro scandalous homosexual affairs that were illegal at the time. His relationship with Lord Douglas was his downfall, as this lover’s father was the Marquess of Queensberry and the ensuing legal battles (Wilde unsuccessfully suing Queensberry for his accusations of indecent behaviour), resulted in a two year prison sentence with hard labour, bankruptcy and a fall from society. Wilde continued writing while in prison, mainly about the conditions and the need for prison reform, with ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ being published on his release. He died in destitution in France, but left a literary treasure trove, including delightful fairy tales for children such as ‘The Happy Prince’ and ‘The Selfish Giant’, which have gentle moral themes but are still relevant and enjoyable today. Wilde’s short, but complicated, life has elicited many biographical works including one by his son (Vyvyan Holland) and with the most recent being by Nicholas Frankel, published in the UK in 2018 and then released in the USA in 2021.

I’ve been asked to give careers advice to students at a secondary school, writes Tim Hoskins. I often help adults progress their gardening careers or change direction from another industry, but the trade needs young blood from different backgrounds. This is my second attempt because there is so much to say, so I’ll start at the beginning: school. I didn’t listen at school because I found it mindnumbingly dull, and I found my place as the class clown (which I later turned into a side hustle as a comedian. Really). A-levels were worse. I left school with nothing and found my route by working my socks off and learning on my own terms. I eventually went to University as a mature student, achieved a top grade, was recommended to study for a PhD and realised that maybe I could be academic. To youngsters still at school, don’t panic if it isn’t for you, but be prepared to work hard to earn your place in your trade. Young brains absorb and retain information faster than older brains, so be prepared to work harder to learn things the longer you leave it. Don’t worry if you struggle to find something you’re good at - it may not have been invented yet. And don’t worry if you don’t find something you excel at, because a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none if often better that a master of one’. That is the case with gardening, and it’s one reason it suits me. That said, I use English when liaising with clients; Modern Languages (Spanish, French and German, so far) when communicating with drivers and nurseries abroad; History to understand design principles, architecure, trends and management patterns; Latin to understand scientific names; Maths for the basics, including trigonometry; Cookery when discussing garden ideas with chefs; Geography to understand landscapes and soils; Chemistry for fertilisers; Biology for plants; and Physics for water properties. Is everything you learn at school a waster of time? Maybe, for some. But who knows what your future holds and AI won’t be replacing gardeners for a long time to come. Tim Hoskins

BENEATH BREDON HILL’S WESTERN SLOPES This month's ramble takes in three interesting villages beneath the western slopes of Bredon Hill, with excellent open views towards the Malvern Hills on a clear day, writes Jack B. Walker.
Distance: Approximately 4 miles, undulating. Car Parking: Small roadside car park in Dock Lane, by the picnic area next to the River Avon. Bus: 540 service from Tewkesbury (Mon-Sat). Refreshments: The Royal Oak in Bredon. Bredon Village Stores is open seven days a week. There is also a chip shop in Station Road. Map: not to scale. OS Sheet 190 (The Malverns and Bredon Hill) is recommended.

The starting point is the village of Bredon, just over three miles from Tewkesbury which is accessible by the 540 bus (not Sundays). If you are driving, park by the picnic area in Dock Lane. This is next to the river Avon - so do check flood warnings and river levels before setting off! Walk along the road with the river to your left, passing the boat yards. Carry on up the slope and at the end of the lane, just by the driveway to Mill End farm, go through the metal gate on the left and along a fenced path towards a small wood (1). Walk through the wood, and when you emerge follow the path ahead across the field. Go through a gap in some trees and down towards a railway embankment. Pass under the railway and across a small field to a stile (2). Cross the busy B4080 with care and go over the stile in the hedge directly opposite, then across another small field and out on to a lane. Turn left and head towards the village of

Bredon’s Norton. As you reach the first few houses and the lane narrows, turn right after April Cottage (3) and follow the yellow direction arrow, over a stile and across a paddock. On reaching a small gate in a fence (4), go through it and turn immediately right along the path, keeping the fence on your right. The lower slopes of Bredon Hill are now to your left. Go over another stile next to a five bar gate, and walk along the path with a hedge on your left. Cross a footbridge and keep following the path until it descends beside an embankment, and go over another small bridge. On your left now
is Beggar Boys Nature Reserve, which is not open to the public. Follow the yellow waymarkers around the edge of the reserve, until you come to its entrance gate and information signs. Turn right (5) and walk up the edge of the field with its boundary on your right.
Westmancote
At the end of the field pass some barns and turn left up a lane into Westmancote. At the T junction turn right and walk down
through the village, and just after a converted chapel turn right into a field (6). Where the hedge turns right, take the path on the left and cross the field to a gate in a hedge between two telegraph poles. Go through the gate and along a narrow path which runs between the gardens of two large houses. At the end of the path, you will meet a road. Cross over and go through the kissing gate at the corner of the field opposite (7). Walk along the path, keeping the row of trees on your right, until you reach the main Bredon to Pershore road (8). Go through the gate and turn left, proceeding with caution along the main road until you reach the proper footway. At the T junction, turn right to walk back over the railway bridge into Bredon village. (9). You will pass the Royal Oak and the village stores on the way back to the car park. Bredon Boat Races 2026 The sun was shining for this year’s Bredon Boat Races which saw 17 teams take to the River Avon for an afternoon of fun. The event was very well attended and everyone was kept occupied by various stalls, a horsebox bar, live music and the boat races. Many of the teams were in fancy dress and this year Blackbeard and the horny hunks won the best dressed team. After a whole afternoon of racing Peaky Blinders were declared the winners, followed by Bredon Star and Severn Sailing Club. This year we were raising money for two local charities, St Richards Hospice and MIdlands Air Ambulance. We are pleased to announce that we have made £5500 profit, which will be split between these two charities. This means for Midlands Air Ambulance we have funded one vital helicopter mission or nine critical care car missions. For St Richard’s Hospice the money donated will fund a Hospice at home healthcare assistant for a month. For this event to happen we need several things in place. Firstly,
a venue with a river and Croft Farm Water Park was an amazing location. The boats are provided by Andy Train and his team from Fladbury who have a long day. Building the boats in the morning, then running the races, and finally putting everything back on the trailers at the end of the day. An organising committee to make everything happen in the months before race day, and then the extra volunteers on the day. Our Sponsors for the day were Croft Farm Water Park, The Gray’s Trust, Pig on the Hill, Abbey Loo’s, Bees & Co and
WHC Hire Services all help ensure the day can go ahead. Then finally to everyone who came and

Pumpkins are among the oldest domestic plants, with evidence that they were being cultivated in Central America as long as 10,000 years ago . Over the centuries, they have been bred to be sweeter and plumper, with the bright orange colour that is so familiar today. Seeds were first brought to Europe by explorers in the 15th century, although pumpkins have never been as popular in Britain as they are in America. The pumpkin is actually classed as a fruit, and although its carving into lanterns at Halloween is generally associated with the United States, the origins of that tradition date back to Ireland - when turnip lanterns were used in ancient ceremonies. Pumpkin Pie is very much the autumn dessert of America, where spiced soup is also popular in the winter. The skin, seeds and flesh of the pumpkin are all edible and there are many recipes available online which you may want to try now they are widely available in local stores. Very Different Places Tewkesbury Museum Talks welcomes back David Elder this month, to complete his account of the Wilson family of Cheltenham. He previously recalled the life of Edward Thomas Wilson, a doctor and much more. In his talk, Cheltenham’s Antarctic Hero, 13 October, we turn to his son Edward Adrian Wilson, also a doctor but famous as an artist, naturalist and polar explorer. He travelled to the Antarctic with Scott in 1901 and again in 1910 on the ill-fated Terra Nova exhibition, along with Tewkesbury’s own Raymond Priestley. A close friend of Scott, Wilson was chosen to be one of the party which reached the South Pole but perished in atrocious conditions on the return journey.
David Elder will help us understand what took “Bill” Wilson from comfortable Cheltenham on what has been called “the worst journey in the world”. In complete contrast, on 27th October, Richard Crutchley examines Market Towns. Richard’s presentation looks at the development of market towns, including Tewkesbury.
Market towns were important not just to their residents, but also for the surrounding villages as places for trade and hearing news and also for processing local produce. Before the Railway Age many people never ventured further than their local market town. Can anyone, anywhere, say that today?

A day in Wardens’ Wood for some practical management before a picnic and some bushcraft fun. The Christian Devil is a beguiling and strangely attractive figure, despite his utterly negative portrayal over two thousand years. This talk explores the origins and nature of his curious allure. Why are women often portrayed as more susceptible to the
Devil then men? How has the portrayal of the Devil changed in popular culture? Speaker: Prof. Darren Oldridge is a specialist in sixteenth and seventeenth-century religious history. His interests include witchcraft and the Devil, the supernatural, and the religious context of the English Civil Wars. A recurring theme of his work is the rationality underpinning apparently strange beliefs: this is reflected, most recently, in the new edition of Strange Histories (Routledge: 2017). More broadly, he is interested in the relationship between poetry and film and the past. At present he is writing a book on early modern English demonology and editing the fourth edition of The Witchcraft Reader, to be published by Routledge in 2025 and 2028 respectively. Urostomy Awareness Month October marks the first-ever Urostomy Awareness Month, and I wanted to ask your readers to spare it a thought. As the UK’s only national charity dedicated specifically to people facing or living with a uninary bypass. A Urostomy is a life-saving operation that requires the urinary system, usually because of bladder cancer or another serious condition. Patients then have to wear a stoma bag on their stomach to collect their urine, 24 hours a day, for ever. Around 2500 people in the UK have this surgery every year-yet most people have never heard word “Urostomy “, let alone understand what living with one involves. The inaugural Urostomy Awareness Month is a month of co-ordinated activity to break the stigma, connect people to peer support, celebrate the resilience of our community, and raise vital funds for the services urostomates rely on. As a supporter of the Urostomy Association (UA) I know how common it is for urostomates to feel isolated after surgery, misunderstood by those around them, and invisible in public.

Winchcombe Art Club Another year of celebrating success and inspiring art at Winchcombe Art Club. We are still open to new members who fancy a new hobby or re-visiting an old one. Come and join our friendly group, meeting on Wednesday mornings from 9-12am at Abbeyfields Community Centre to paint or sketch together. There is advice and encouragement a plenty but no teaching. Some of the group opt to start the morning with warm up sketches of each other or in good weather some might paint en plein air (outside!). However, most of the time members bring along our own projects and materials. There’s an optional quarterly art competition to create a piece on a topical theme. This year’s subjects include abstract, monotone and bokeh. Members also enjoy a programme of optional workshops by local artists. Non members are welcome to join us for these, may be as a taster or as an alternative to committing to the weekly group. Winchcombe Art Club holds an annual exhibition of our artwork, and the next one is on Saturday 15th November,
10am-1pm at Abbeyfields. There will also be refreshments, an art tombola, a raffle and a live art demonstration. Many of the exhibits will be for sale at reasonable prices. It’s a great opportunity to get ahead with your Christmas shopping! Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, new members are very welcome to join our

We treat every dog as an individual, their age, breed, activity levels, lifestyle and health can all influence what they need from their diet. The Late Lord Nelson
All that remains of the Nelson Inn today is a street name It stood for centuries on what is now the pavement, outside O Brien, Wrench & Lowcock. The origins of the pub are shrouded in mystery. It must have had a long life before it became the Lord Nelson, which would have been during the Napoleonic wars, to commemorate a national hero. It was initially in an alley, the timber framed building behind the ‘front house’, 20 Barton Street which was eventually incorporated
to create the establishment remembered today. No earlier name has been linked to it, though. In 1830, John Hyatt owned the house on Barton Street and the ten houses in the alley behind. He was described as an Innkeeper. He raised a few eyebrows by marrying his son’s widow, who became his wife and daughter-inlaw, to the amusement of the press. In the 1841 census, the Inn was in Nelson Alley, but in 1851 it was in Nelson Street, which had been created by demol-
ishing a row of cottages to give access to the Oldbury, a new development area. By 1851, Charles Merrick was the tenant landlord. He had four people staying at the inn; a journeyman painter, a pauper butcher and a couple who were hawkers of hassocks. A niche occupation! Though the

By 1966, the area was an eyesore, with empty shops being held up by scaffolding. The brewery hit an unexpected problem. They were refused permission to demolish two listed buildings, which spoiled
their plans. This was not good for business at the Nelson, and the inevitable happened. In 1970 it closed, and stood derelict for twenty years before it was demolished, with all the other buildings on the west of Nelson Street, so that the street could be widened to allow busses to use it safely. Just before the Summer finally ended, Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service gave assistance to Reach Master Paul Cronin to help him finalise the cleaning and tidying of Strensham Lock. Head of Unit Nic Price said “Members threw themselves into the various tasks with great enthusiasm cleaning around the lock and using two of their boats were able to weed the lock walls. By the end of the evening the job was completed and then members enjoyed a wonderful supper on the lock island most kindly provided by Margaret and Paul Cronin”.

pub was still shown as being in Nelson Street, Charles Merrick was occupying 20 Barton Street, so the two buildings seemed to be operated as one, though later census returns divide the two again. In 1854, the whole row was sold, fetching £460. It was described as “the front street dwelling house, also that old-established public house known by the sign of the Lord Nelson, with brewhouse, yard and other conveniences, together with ten cottages behind”. Twenty years later the row was sold again, though with only nine cottages, and raised only £330. The ‘front house’ was a shop, occupied by Joshua Baylis. Following Charles Merrick’s death, the pub was advertised to let, with “coming-in (turnover) very low’. It wasn’t a pub with any status. His widow took it on, until Edwin Merrick, took over in 1867. He was soon in trouble with the law; first for serving beer after hours (fined 2/6d) and then allowing cards to be played for money (fined 10/-). He left in 1871 when George Mayo, described
cies. In about 1900, the pub was bought by the Arnold Perret Brewery. Maybe this was when it was combined with 20 Barton Street. Short tenancies continued until 1908, when the arrival of Tom Crisp steadied the ship. The pub had some uneasy times because of the Compensation Act. It escaped the mass closures of poor pubs in 1917 by the skin of its teeth, and the magistrates had another go in 1925, when it was reprieved on the promise of making some structural improvements. Tom Crisp stayed until he died in 1951, and his daughter was licensee for a further year. He gained a ‘no nonsense’ reputation, maybe because of the mallet which he kept behind the bar. In 1937, Harry Drinkwater put his fist through the window after being refused a drink, and got 14 days hard labour as a result. After Tom Crisp, there was another succession of landlords until Alex Warden moved in in 1961. The darts team had some success and the pub was part of the community. Things started to go
