A spokesperson for the branch said: “We’d like to give special mention to all of the volunteers who gave their time to help with this year’s Poppy Appeal collections, many of whom are not members of the RBL. “Finally, a big shout out to the Tewkesbury Units of the Air Cadets, Army Cadets and Sea Cadets, the 1st Tewkesbury Boys Brigade and the 2nd Tewkesbury Rainbows, for raising over £6,600 between them. “We’ve had our best start ever to a Poppy Appeal in the Tewkesbury area and with all collection tins retrieved and donations counted, this year’s total so far is an incredible £54,801.”

Running group reaches sixteen year milestone Tewkesbury Allrunners will have been "running" for sixteen years in 2026. Groups are taken by UK Athletic Leaders in Running Fitness and meet at 6.00pm every Tuesday evening at The Sea Cadet Hall, in Trinity Walk (off Oldbury Road) in Tewkesbury GL20 5NP.
Tewkesbury Allrunners is a group for ladies of all shapes, sizes and abilities. Running groups go out from the hall, covering from three to four and a half miles, with runs lasting for roughly an hour. Runs are around the streets, lanes and parks of Tewkesbury, as well as
some off-road. This month a new beginners course starts on Tuesday 6th January, at 6.00pm. New members are welcome. If you are interested in joining, then please send an email in advance to Kathy Lewis at kathy.adrian.lewis@gmail.com

CHARLIE’S CANCER SUPPORT ARRIVES IN NORTHWAY A new cancer support group is coming to Tewkesbury. Charlies Community Support is a Gloucestershire-based charity which provides free holistic therapies to those affected by cancer. The charity's HQ is in Gloucester, and as well as drop-in sessions around the county, Charlie’s has just opened a café in Barnwood. The Northway Community Hub will be providing the space in Tewkesbury, and local massage therapist Carly Cooke will be the lead volunteer for the sessions. Carly has been volunteering her time at the Cheltenham drop-in sessions for the past three years, but wanted to start a group closer to her home in Northway, to benefit her community. An amazing turnout of volunteers came to a meeting recently, to brainstorm and plan the sessions, which will start in January. The charity is hoping some more therapists will donate a few hours of their time to support the cause, so that it can treat as many people affected by cancer possible. The group will launch on Wednesday 28th January at 10am, and anyone affected by cancer, and anyone who feels they can support the group in some way, is welcome. The sessions will then run monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 10am-1pm. Free therapies and craft activities will be on offer at each session. THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR ALISON'S BOOKSHOP Following on from our article in the September issue about Ian Nicholson's planned retirement from alison's bookshop, there is good news to start the year. Ian is planning to continue until these negotiations have come to a satisfactory conclusion so that alison's is open to book lovers in the future. Everything is basically coming together it is just a matter of the new owner resolving certain details. Ian Nicholson said “Our article in Tewkesbury Direct was read by many. “Not only did we receive what we had hoped for, being serious approaches about taking over the bookshop, but in addition we have been blessed by so much praise.” He continued “I can
only thank all who have come in and expressed their wishes of good luck and to thank everybody for their kind words and how we will be missed; these have been so touching and heartfelt.

£10,000 RAISED FOR AIR AMBULANCE Spectacular fireworks displays held at Croft Farm in November 2024 and 2025 have raised £10,000 for the Midlands Air Ambulance service. A spokesman for Croft Farm ar Bredon’s Hardwick near Tewkesbury, paid tribute to those involved with organising the shows. “Thanks to Pepperpot Pyrotechnics for the display, and Chris Warren and Jordan Nash for designing the display plus Liam Boyce’s sound system on the night. “Thank you to everyone who came and supported we look forward to next year.”
EARLY SNOWDROPS While out walking in early December, I made a detour up Watergrip Lane in Conderton to see if the snowdrops had started to show, writes Jack B. Walker. I was delighted to discover that they were already out - as this picture shows. I first came across these early bloomers beneath Bredon Hill about twenty years ago, and each year I have been able to return, I have found them there before Christmas. I would be interested to hear if any of our readers have come across similar early snowdrops in the countryside around Tewkesbury. It won’t belong before the full spectacle of snowdrops can be seen in the countryside. Turn to page 52 for a few suggestions of where to see them.

GLENN MILLER AND THE TEDDINGTON HANDS INN Glenn Miller and his orchestra were undoubtedly one of the most popular bands of the late 1930s and mid-40s. They also worked tirelessly to entertain and boost the morale of allied troops in Europe during World War II, including several concerts in Gloucestershire. On 15th December 1944 Miller boarded an aircraft in Bedfordshire, which was bound for France in icy weather conditions. The plane was lost over the English Channel, some say due to friendly fire, whereas others point to mechanical failure or even pilot error in what were known to be treacherous flying conditions. No wreckage was ever found - so to this day the mystery is unsolved. A story with a local connection which has been circulating recently surrounds some of Miller’s last concerts in the UK. The US Army had several camps in north Gloucestershire, one of which was adjacent to the Teddington Hands Inn, near Tewkesbury. In those days it was known as the Cross Hands, the name being changed in the 1980s to avoid confusion with other similarly named inns at Cheltenham and Brockworth. Some events held to entertain the American
䡵 Glenn Miller: customer at the Teddington Hands Inn? troops were also open to locals - including a boxing exhibition at Teddington, featuring the legendary American heavyweight champion Joe Louis. Teddington also hosted one of the last concerts performed by Glenn Miller, before he headed to Cheltenham for further shows, and then on to Bedfordshire to embark on the illfated flight to France. Villagers were invited to attend the concert. The repertoire no doubt included Miller’s enduring tunes such as ‘In The Mood’, and ‘Moonlight Serenade’. Local legend has it
that Miller called at the Teddington Hands Inn after the show for a drink with other band members. It could be the last pub that Miller visited although there is no concrete evidence to corroborate the story, and few people left who were there at the time. Unless any of our readers know better?

Following the flooding of the Avon after Storm Claudia, Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service were called out by Avon Navigation Trust to clear debris and masses of floating pennywort from the arches of King John’s Bridge which had been brought down by the floodwater. Head of Unit Nic Price said “A number of visiting narrowboats were held up at Stratford and urgently needed to get through Tewkesbury to reach the River Severn so four of us had to use our Rigiflex workboat Severn 1 to try and dislodge the blockage at the bridge. Floating Pennywort is a non native aquatic species which grows rapidly into dense floating mats some of which had come loose in the flood from further upriver and this had all got stuck around a large tree which had floated across the bridge thus forming an impenetrable mass. After several hours the team finally managed to dislodge it all and open the bridge again to navigation.”

INVALUABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Tewkesbury Sea Cadets, operating under the name TS Otter, have played a significant role in the local community since their establishment in 1942. The Sea Cadets is a voluntary youth organisation with a nationwide presence across the UK. Founded in the mid19th century, its core aim is to equip young people with nautical skills and training. Over the years, it has gained a reputation for offering thousands of young people opportunities for personal growth, development of maritime skills, and active community engagement. Membership at Tewkesbury Sea Cadets has remained steady in recent years. The unit typically consists of 30 to 45 cadets, with a positive gender balance. In 2025, the cadet strength averaged fortyfive, comprising 40% male and 60% female cadets. The unit has actively promoted inclusivity and diversity, drawing participants from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, in line with the Sea Cadet movement'scommitment to equal opportunities. Tewkesbury Sea Cadets relies entirely on volunteers for all aspects of its operation, from instruction to fundraising and building management. cadets. In 2025, the unit benefited from the support of thirty regular volunteers aged between 18 and 83. Parental participation in cadet activities is always welcomed.
Throughout last year Tewkesbury Sea Cadets supported and participated in community events such as Remembrance Sunday, Armed Forces Day, the Royal British Legion Poppy Collection, and St George’s Parade, as well as assisting at events such as the Medieval Festival. Despite these successes, the Tewkesbury unit faces ongoing challenges with its premises. The current building,
(at Trinity Walk off Oldbury Road) though wholly owned by the Tewkesbury Sea Cadets, is increasingly inadequate for modern training needs and accessibility standards. Limited space, outdated infrastructure, and maintenance requirements will restrict the unit’s ability to expand instructional capacity and accommodate additional cadets. The Tewkesbury Sea Cadets continue to provide invaluable opportunities for young people, supported by a rich heritage and strong community backing. Plants and people differ fundamentally in how they deal with temperature, wind, light, and energy, and understanding these differences is useful for good gardening and plant care. Humans are warmblooded. We generate our own heat and regulate body temperature with our metabolism, with movement and clothing. Plants cannot do this. They rely entirely on environmental temperatures, so their tissues cool and warm with the surrounding air. When temperatures fall below freezing, ice crystals can form inside or between plant cells, rupturing cell walls and causing lasting damage. Plants do not “feel cold” or compensate for it; they simply endure the conditions or suffer injury. This is why plants do not experience wind chill in the way humans do. Wind chill measures how quickly wind removes heat from warm skin. Because humans produce heat, wind increases heat loss and makes us feel colder. Plants do not generate body heat, so wind cannot chill them physiologically. For plants, the true air temperature-
particularly overnight lows - is what matters. Gardeners should therefore check actual temperatures for frost risk, while using wind chill or ‘feels like’ temperatures only to decide how many layers they themselves need to wear.
Light further illustrates the pitfalls of anthropomorphism. Plants are highly sensitive to ultraviolet radiation and specific wavelengths because light powers photosynthesis. Humans adapt quickly to changing light levels through our eyes and behaviour, but plants lack such rapid adjustment. Sudden changes in light intensity or quality can stress plants or damage tissues, and white light levels matter because plants respond to spectral balance, not perceived brightness. Crucially, plants also have limited energy.
Unlike humans, with constant access to food, plants depend on the energy they capture through photosynthesis. That energy must be carefully allocated. If it is spent on one function— such as stress responses or movement - less remains for growth, reproduction, disease resistance, drought tol-

After being patient for a long time, I have at last visited the famous Piggy (Station) Lane, writes John Dixon. Sadly I found the pigs that were raised and slaughtered for salted winter food on allotments, when I was young, have been banned by recent laws. It was good, however, to see that tenants were enthusiastically preparing for winter. We have no proof but one assumes the land was left over when the second railway was built in 1864. Certainly by 1909, it was bought for £180 (today £25,310) by two political councillors and businessmen - the Jordans, who owned the garage, the Tewkesbury Car Mart, which disappeared under the ‘Kremlin’ shopping centre in 1969. They were distinct allotments “bounded by live hedges”, each with an individual tenant. Thus, they thrive today - without the “live hedges” - only threatened by the remarkable 2007 floods. Allotment land has always been vulnerable to house builders, solving a perceived housing crisis. Under the Allotment Act, 1925, small, rented plots of land where residents can grow their own fruit and vegetables, “were protected from development or sale under, except with ministerial sign-off”. In 1935 Tewkesbury Unemployed were fighting to save their allotments from development. Indeed, when Priors Park was developed in the 1930s, council houses were placed on land with space for vegetable growing. There were also allotments off Margaret Road, complete with vegetables, bees - and pigs; until they were replaced by the Despenser and Perry Hill housing developments. Mitton’s turn followed even though Pantry Meadows had been used for football, cricket and even rabbit coursing in the 19th century. In 1918 it was converted into allotments for “discharged soldiers (who) needed light soil”. It was then cherished by the unemployed. At least, when housing became the crop, allotment holders were compensated by a new plot of land further up the Bredon Road. When I joined the local council in 2007, one of our first decisions was to name the streets Desiree or Trafalgar - not after the French courtesan or a famous battle, but after allotment vegetables!

1. Scam Emails - If an email makes your heart race - “You’ve won a prize!” or “Your account will be closed in 24 hours!” - pause before clicking. Most scams rely on panic or excitement to get you to act quickly. Tips: Does the sender’s address look strange? Are there spelling mistakes? Is it asking you to click a link or “verify” something urgently? Nothing could be this important, and it’s the first time you’re hearing about it! When in doubt, ask somebody you trust to have a look at it (two heads are better than one), or bring it along to one of our digital drop-ins; we’d be happy to have a look! 2. Passwords - You don’t need complicated symbols and numbers that look like algebra homework. Tip: Use three random words - something like teac u p - r i v e r- l a m p p o s t . That being said, please don’t reuse the same password everywhere. If one account gets
breached, the rest tumble like dominoes. A notebook at home is a good way to help you keep track - far safer than “Tewkesbury123” appearing across half the internet! 3. Updates - We all groan at the sight of a software update, but running them is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself. Updates fix security holes scammers actively exploit. Think of them as your phone or laptop’s flu jab: a few minutes of inconvenience for a lot more safety. Staying safe online doesn’t mean being good with computers. It means giving yourself permission to pause,
question, and ask for help. So take your time, trust your instincts, and remember: in Tewkesbury, you don’t have to navigate the digital world alone.

u3a OPEN/MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL MORNING 2025
Please come along to our speaker mornings at Baptist Hall, Station Rd, Tewkesbury GL20 5DR
On 10th November Tewkesbury & District u3a held their annual Open/Membership Renewal Morning at the Baptist Church. This is our main opportunity to spread the word to the general public about our organisation, recruiting more members and allowing current members to renew their membership and discover new activities for the forthcoming year. The Morning was a great success with over 200 people attending, including 40 non-members of which 25 joined our u3a on the day, at a nominal annual cost of £12 per person or £20 for a couple. We are a member’s organisation open to anyone no longer in full-time employment. 33 Groups were show casing what activities they have on offer. The stands included some elaborate displays and several videos of our activities, as well as one Group playing Mahjong. There are 36 different activities to choose from including Art, French, Strumming For Fun, Photography and Science and Technology. For the more active types you can try your hand at Table Tennis, Short Mat Bowls, Kurling (no ice involved) and Petanque. There are also a couple of Walking Groups, a very popular activity, a possible hangover from COVID. This gives both current
and potential members a chance to talk to activity Group Leaders on what is on offer and discuss if it’s suitable for them. Every group offers a free taster session, so anyone can come along and try a particular activity without obligation or commitment. Normally there is a small charge on the day for each activity to cover the cost of venue hire, if applicable. We also have Groups who meet together to organise social activities. Solos, Solos Too, Theatre Visits and Opera Appreciation to
name a few. The object is members can organise activities and feel comfortable with people they trust and know, doing things they would not normally want to do on their own. A very important part of our organisation in later life. Our u3a has 596 members taking part in varied Group activities. Why not come and join us. Live learn and Laugh. WI Newtown know how to party! We had a grand Carol Service this month, organised by us at St Nicholas, Ashchurch, for the local WI branches. The wee trees, courtesy of our Craft Group, made a delightful display. Excellent carol-singing efforts, some unusual readings, of course mince pies, and a lovely spicy smell of mulled wine in the air, from the raffle prize that rolled off a pew… Our Happy Christmas December WI meeting went with a swing - and a sing, from Frances Fry, whose festive season billing states “A fun and festive entertainment sharing some of our most enduring and loved Christmas songs, with a peek at some of the stories behind them.” And she did not disappoint. We had a lovely time, what with festive jumpers, the usual mince pies, and Frances to keep us entertained very ‘interactively’. Then the visit to Worcester, to see the Cathedral cloisters brim full of brilliant and varied full-size Christmas trees, and a couple of
other local venues, including lunch. Our next meeting, with Andy Cole [No, not the footballer, honestly!] on the subject of Mother’s Ruin [or maybe Mothers’ Ruin, if it wasn’t Andy’s mother] is at the Wheatpieces, 14th January 2025, promptly at 2pm. Looking back… and forward at Probus Club As the year comes to a close it is an opportune time for Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club members to look back at the wide variety of speakers we have welcomed over the last 12 months at our Tuesday morning meetings. We have had such an eclectic mix of subjects presented by excellent speakers that it is difficult to cover all of them in a short article, but some of the outstanding ones include the threepart presentations by Captain John Hutchinson one of the original Concorde pilots, the story of the life of Mahatma Gandhi by Galen Bartholomew and a detailed two-part history of the Industrial Revolution in the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries presented by Nigel Thompson. We have also had a number of very interesting external visits including a second visit to the fly fishing experience at
Monmouth, a visit to the Javelin Park Energy from Waste incinerator, a trip to Bournville village accompanied by a member of the Cadbury chocolate family, a tour of the Morgan Car factory in Malvern and the experience of being on Concorde at the British Aerospace Museum near Bristol. As well as learning a lot about history, travel, science, industry and many other “serious” subjects, at Probus Club we also like a bit of fun and we learned a lot about the lives of the Two Ronnies and Norman Wisdom and we finished off our year with the stars and songs of Old-time music hall!
As the year 2026 beckons we can look forward to another successful year with a still growing number of members and bringing in some high profile speakers including a retired senior Metropolitan Police officer giving us the inside story of some of the UK’s notorious crimes, a retired RAF Group Captain presenting us with an in-depth analysis of some of Britain’s wartime battles and several new speakers we have not seen before. BLOCKLEY AND ITS HIDDEN COTSWOLD VALLEYS The delightful village of Blockley is slightly off the Cotswold tourist trail, but has long been popular with ramblers, writes Jack B. Walker. The village streets are narrow, so it is best to park at the edge of the village, with consideration to local residents. Our starting point is the church of St Peter & Paul (Father Brown’s St Marys). Walk up the drive to the village High Street and turn left (1). In the 18th and early 19th century, Blockley was a centre for the silk industry. Now an idyllic village, it is possible to see signs of its industrial past in the many former mills.
The Russell Spring
On the right of the High Street you will pass the Russell Spring; a bequest of Lucy Russell in 1858, to provide a source of clean water for the villagers.
Carry on to the very end of the High Street, where it divides into two tracks (2). Take the left track (a bridleway) to enter Dovedale. You can now see ponds and Blockley Brook, which powered the mills to your left. Continue on this track (part of the ‘Five Mile Drive’) into Bourton Woods. Eventually the track bears right, away from the stream and follows the edge of the wood. Keep on the same path, and look out for a footpath on the right. (3). Turn on to this path and follow the directions down the field to meet a track leading to farm buildings (4). Turn left and walk along the track to reach Warren Farm (5) and the Diamond Way. Bear right walking down the slope, to enter another wood (6), and keep on the Diamond Way to eventually return to point (2). Walk back along the High Street, and look for the public footpath sign pointing right (7). Walk down this path between cottages and low stone walls, and at the junction turn left to go down Brook Lane (8).

Walk to the right of the ford, then left across the brook and up to rejoin the High Street (9) and return to the church. There are two good pubs in Blockley - The Great Western Arms and
the Crown Hotel in the village centre, as well as a community shop and café. All have seasonal opening hours, so do check their websites if you are planning a visit.
