We continue to hold true to our ethos of bringing the town and river together for the benefit of all. Where possible we offer free or good value family entertainment, and it promises to be a great weekend.
Last year’s ‘Street Party’ was such a great success we are doing it again! TBW and The Roses Theatre are joining forces on Friday 15th May, in Sun Street. There will be entertainment and Street Food from 6.00pm to 10.30pm. Don’t forget to bring a chair!
The theme for the weekend and our parade in 2026 is ‘David Attenborough, Land, Sea & Sky.’ He will be 100 this year and we thought that was something we had to acknowledge.
The parade leaves Sun Street on Saturday 16th May at 3.30pm and will make its way down the High Street and finish at the Vineyards. At the Vineyards on Saturday, Cheltenham Animal Shelter will host our very popular Dog Show, (registration is at 11am), and there will be lots of stalls.
There is plenty of activity on the river on both days near to Healings Mill, plus children’s entertainment, displays and stalls. On Saturday at 10.45am there will be the Official Riverside opening at the TBW stall, with dignitaries arriving by boat escorted by the Maritime Volunteer Service.

2026: A New Year and a chance to show what really makes Tewkesbury tick: people coming together for the common good, and a lot of fun.
One of the great strengths of Tewkesbury is the richness of its voluntary sector.
Everywhere there are groups of ordinary people working together to have fun as well as provide services and opportunities that are neither suitable or viable for business or government.
These are the sports clubs, youth groups, art, drama, heritage, music, civic societies, religious groups, wellbeing, choirs, games, fitness, museums, environment, keep fit, gardening, and so on.
But sometimes it is not easy for groups to meet their public, nor for the public, especially new residents, to find a group.
This is especially the case for smaller groups with limited resources and maybe niche appeal.
This Is Tewkesbury has been created to address this.
Taking a lead from “Ledbury Community Day”, now in its twelfth year, This Is Tewkesbury is a new community event set up to encourage residents of Tewkesbury, including Ashchurch, Northway and Wheatpieces, to discover voluntary groups,
service providers and public services
On Saturday 13 June, This Is Tewkesbury is hosting its first community day at Tewkesbury Abbey. Participating organisations will be able to share their activities with the general public.
They may take a stall to introduce themselves, or put on a display or demonstration. Maybe artworks, a sport tryout, dance, singing, music, drama. Show themselves at their best. In addition, we hope that public services and parish councils will attend.
We should be able to accommodate 60 to 65 groups or other participants, both within the Abbey and in its grounds. There will be refreshments and a chance to look round the Abbey and gardens.
We are now inviting
groups, societies and small “community service” businesses (dance clubs, sports training, choirs etc.) to register their interest.
They can do so through our website thisistewkesbury.org.uk, or via the QR Code below.
The deadline for registering is 2nd March. So, do it now! There is no charge for charities, community groups or not- for- profits. Forprofit services (choirs. dance, fitness etc) will be subject to a small charge, to help cover our costs.
Once we have finalised arrangements for participants, we will promote the event to the public. Entry is free, refreshments available, and we are planning a programme of displays, demonstrations and chances to try something new. People of all ages and interests are welcome.

After 13 years under the ownership of Michael Jones, Sweets & Treats on Tewkesbury High Street closed its doors on 17th January. While it marked a sad moment for the town centre—and for the many generations of customers who have visited over the years—declining trade meant the shop was sadly no longer financially viable. However, fans of the much-loved sweet shop needn’t worry, as Sweets & Treats will continue to trade under

Two outstanding students from White Tiger Martial Arts (Jake Dodds and Arthur Griffin) have been successfully accepted onto the highly regarded Gloucestershire Constabulary Outward Bound course for 2026, after impressing assessors during the rigorous selection process.
The annual Outward Bound Bursary Scheme, run in partnership with the Gloucestershire Outward Bound Associationand Gloucestershire Constabulary, offers young people aged between 13 and 18 an intense and transformative weeklong outdoor adventure designed to build resilience, confidence and leadership skills. They now have the exciting challenge of a week of outdoor learning and adventure ahead, where they will not only test their physical endurance but also develop valuable life skills that will serve them well into adulthood.

For those of you who don’t know, Sarah is expecting a baby, who is due in April. Due date is Easter Sunday to be exact, all being well of course. All is going well with the pregnancy health wise, and to make it more exciting Sarah and her husband have decided not to find out the gender. So…are you team Boy or team Girl?
As you can understand, this has contributed to the changes we are going to reveal to you. After many discussions decisions have now been made - and this is what is going to happen as of the beginning of April 2026:
Sarah is going to be going on to maternity leave as of mid March, also during this time (between now and April) Sarah is going to have her garage converted so she can balance work and family life as soon as she is able to. She will take a temporary hiatus from ‘Body2Soul' itself and regain contact with her regular clients when she is looking to return to work. Body2Soul will remain with its name, but it will only be Sarah working from it.
You do not need to worry about appointments going forward: you will still be able to book in with Rosie, Emily and Sophie directly at your next visit on our booking system as normal, to keep consistency until we have our own diaries individually managed. The website will be updated accordingly with contact details, locations and also exactly which treatments you can book in for. The main treatments that will be affected temporarily are Classic Eyelash Extensions and IPL Hair Removal.
So who this does affect between now and April? Customers who currently have a Gift Voucher to use with Body2Soul, and also clients with any remaining Sunbed minutes on their card? We have made the decision to help keep everything clean and simple, which means Gift Vouchers need to be used by the end of March, and if the use of remaining Sunbed minutes isn’t achievable for you, we can exchange the remaining value of them into treatments also to be redeemed by the end of March.
Emily has also made the decision to work from home within Tewkesbury. She will be decorating the summer house which she has already set up, and transforming that into a lovely treatment room.
Rosie will also be changing location, but also not too far. In fact she will be renting a room from Zeta Hair and Beauty, which is based on Gannaway Lane.
We will further update you on Sophie’s whereabouts. As some of you may know, she has been on a wonderful adventure in Bali and Kuala Lumpur since before Christmas, and has only returned to us within this last week. So watch this space for further details.

TWYNING COMMUNITY PROJECT,
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
Twyning Community Project encompasses the Mens Shed, a Sister Shed and a Community Garden. Later this year a Pottery is being opened to further expand the activities available in the village.
The Mens Shed has been active for 3 and a half years and Twyning Sister Shed has been meeting every fortnight for over 18 months now. A group of 9 ladies who meet to make repair and refurbish whatever comes through the door!
They are not phased by antique furniture, garden benches, making bird boxes and table and generally throw themselves into any project going. They are lead by Caroline and Tim from the Mens Shed who will train them on specific machinery, if they are not proficient and provide encouragement tea and biscuits!
2026 sees them learning to use the wood lathe and turn wood for some of the projects we have in - legs for chairs, finials for staircases or knobs for drawers. Candle Stick holders will soon be on the list I’m sure! Where possible we make the items we need to repair rather than buy
new. Most of the ladies are keen to give wood turning a go. As with the men, they are supportive of each other. They chat about their difficulties and issues more freely than the men and the group has a lot of fun and
laughs as well as serious conversations.
The Community Garden is just beginning to reawaken after several weeks of no activity with beans being planted, garlic and other vegetables to prepare for summer cropping.

THE DEVIL’S CHIMNEY

Gone are the days when local lads would scale the limestone stack and pose for photos! The chimney was made safe from possible collapse a
few years ago now, and remains a popular curiosity as well as providing a splendid vantage point for stunning views over Cheltenham
and beyond.
The origins of the Devil’s chimney are obscure: some say it is the result of natural erosion, others the work of quarrymen. There is even a theory is that it was created by a local landowner as a publicity stunt!
To begin this walk, it is best to park in either of two car parks in Daisy Bank Road at the foot of Leckhampton Hill.
Leave the car park (1) and turn right along Daisy Bank Road, with Leckhampton Hill rising to your right.
From Victorian times the hill was popular for its fresh air and recreation, and for many centuries was quarried for its fine Cotswold limestone. Local people rebelled when a
landowner tried to deny rights of way in the 1900s, but the hill’s future was assured in the 1920s when it was purchased by the council and full public access was restored.
In Daisy Bank Road you will pass several grand homes, and more modest retreats. One bungalow housed a café in the 1930s. Continue along the road, which eventually becomes a track, and carry on to reach the foot of Charlton Common (2). The track coming up from the left was once the main road to Cirencester.
Turn right and follow the steep rocky path up the edge of the hill. Towards the top of the ascent there is a bench where you can take a

As the path flattens out, bear right to join the Cotswold Way (3). The views to the right over Cheltenham are quite spectacular on a clear day: beyond it the Malverns, and the hills of Bredon, Clent and Abberley can be seen.
Keep following the Cotswold Way until you reach the sign pointing towards the Devil’s Chimney (4). Here turn right and follow the path as it curves downwards above the stone outcrop. Follow the steep path
down (with caution) to reach the ruins of the old lime kilns. Walk on ahead to the top of the former main 1920s tramway (5),which was built to take stone to the railway line at Charlton Kings. Descend with care and turn leftat the bottom (6) to return to the car park.

Help your garden birds in winter months

SHARP GARDEN, SHARP MIND
If your garden is looking a bit damp, bleak and uninviting in winter, a few practical tasks can instantly lift it and make it look like someone cares, writes Tim Hoskins.
In the visible areas, winter gardens need structure, order, and cleanliness.
Start with the lawn. If the grass is still growing and conditions aren’t frozen or waterlogged, you can mow in winter. Ignore anyone who says you can’t.
Raise the cutting height slightly. Even more impactful is edging: a crisp lawn edge immediately sharpens the whole space and gives a professional finish.
Next, clear surfaces. Blow or sweep leaves, debris, and soil from patios, paths, driveways, and even lawns. Hard standing areas quickly look neglected when dirty, and five minutes with a broom or blower can completely change the feel of the garden.
Pruning is another
winter win. Cut back deciduous shrubs and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Plants that were deliberately left standing for architectural interest may have collapsed under wind, rain, or snow – don’t feel guilty about cutting them back now.
Also remove rotting stems left behind from earlier cutbacks; they add mess rather than structure at this point in the season.
Mulching beds is both practical and tidy and hides small surface debris. A fresh layer of compost, bark, or wellrotted manure suppresses weeds, protects soil, and instantly makes borders look cared for and intentional.
Treat moss or algae on paths, patios, and decking. Slippery green
surfaces look unkempt and can be unsafe. Apply treatments during dry spells and let winter rain do the work.
If temperatures allow, consider painting sheds or fences. A fresh coat can transform a tired garden. Yes, it’s a warm weather job, ideally, but often it’s possible to do it in winter.
Finally, tackle clutter. Stack spare pots neatly, reel hoses tightly or store them away, and gather loose items into sheds or tidy piles. Make sure pots, bird baths and trellises are straight and centralised. Order is key. A sharp winter garden isn’t about growth – it’s about discipline, structure, and clean lines.

Supporting and encouraging young people is one of Julie’s main focuses during her year in office, which made it especially meaningful to have members of Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade & Tewkesbury Sea Cadets present. Bookworm volunteers, learning about the projects, events, and outreach programmes they help deliver. She also enjoyed conversations with members The High Sheriff of Gloucestershire Visits Bookworm for an Afternoon of Community Celebration

A highlight of the visit came when Julie presented Karen Brennan with a High Sheriff Award, recognising Karen’s outstanding dedication and service to the community. The moment was met with enthusiastic applause - a well-deserved tribute to someone who gives so much.

In Tewkesbury’s Holy Trinity Church, there is a wall plaque that commemorates a certain William Sandilands, who served on board HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. He was apparently one of the three men who carried the fatally-wounded Admiral Nelson down from the ship’s quarterdeck in the midst of the battle. He can be seen (in the white shirt) in Benjamin West’s epic painting The Death of Nelson (1806).
When Sandilands fi-
nally died in April 1867, the vicar of Holy Trinity recalled that he: “... was somewhat of an original – honest and industrious, but a rough diamond. His voice seemed to have been blown away out of the foretop at some remote period, and its hoarse remains added zest to the worthy old man’s droll sayings…”
In the first Tewkesbury Museum talk of 2026, Sam Eedle explores this old salt’s origins, his service in the Napoleonic Wars and the antics of local
bureaucrats who nearly marred his final years.

A BRAND-NEW PLAY FOR TEWKESBURY:
“RIVER STORIES – A TOWN CALLED TO SPEAK”
Come to The Roses Theatre on March 18th to join a lively community gathering for all ages. Born out of conversations and creative workshops with local children and elders, River Stories – A town called to speak is a brand-new play for Tewkesbury.
Across four workshops each, run by Severn StoryLab, these groups engaged in activities designed to encourage sharing of stories, ideas and dreams inspired by Tewkesbury’s past, present and possible futures.
Elders met at The Roses Theatre and children were from Queen Margaret Primary Academy in Priors Park.
Ingrid Jones, a theatre maker and writer from Acta Community Theatre in Bristol, wove these stories into a draft script. This was then shared with elders and children in a fifth workshop, where they were able to express their thoughts, feelings and what they might like
to change. The final script was then given to University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol Drama students who have rehearsed all winter – ready for the live performance in March. “Enlightening on so many levels” is how one participant described the experience.
Alongside the performance of River Stories – A Town Called to Speak will be interactive audience activities, designed to explore how communities can adapt to change together. WI Newtown - Making Gin and Resolutions
Nearly as worthy as that sounds, resolutions at our New Year meeting were all about voting for which worthy campaign will be the focus of the whole WI later this year. Public toilets? Homeless women? Befriending children in care? How do you choose? Another moral issue is the ongoing development of new WI policy for our transgender members, now that UK law disbars them, from April 2026. An associated group, Sisterhood, is gathering momentum. Online tech and virtual membership will doubtless make their contribution.

For our entertainment, Andy Cole [no, not the footie wizard - he’s from Vinotopia in Nailsworth] told us all about the mysterious making of gin, how
and why, from ancient times, right through to the current ‘explosion’ of flavours and niche distilleries. Apparently, it was actually used to help ignite wet gunpowder at one stage…!
From a general cureall use of herbs like juniper in Egyptian and
Roman times onwards, when the 15th century Ice Age stopped UK grapes growing, the magical botanicals were then added to wheat-
based spirit [vodka] to create gin. Add them after distillation, you get recognisable gin, some of which can be smooth enough to enjoy neat. Add botanicals before distillation, and why would you, you get London Dry Gin. Hmmm. Much later this was improved by adding mixer drinks, like tonic, developed to disguise the bitterness of the quinine used to ward off malarial symptoms. G&T was the drink of choice for a 6 o’clock sundowner in India, hence Indian Tonic.

Veterinary Nurse Claire, has over 27 years experience in Veterinary practice, and since setting up SweetPea’s in 2017 she has developed a special interest and a passion for K9 Nutrition.
Claire spends a lot of her time working closely with our customers and their dogs, helping them overcome some the pressures around feeding time.
The most frequent issue we see are “the fussy eaters”. I’m sure many of you can relate to one or more of these below.
1) FUSSY EATERS!
• Your dog happily eats plenty of treats but picky or refuses to eat their food from the bowl.
• It can get expensive, as throwing lots of food away.
• you try to temp your dog by adding in human food from the fridge (chicken/ cheese) or sharing your food!
• your dog could be underweight or have difficulty keeping weight on.
• Feeding times can become stressful, causing anxiety for dogs and their owners. (this can often escalate, causing some more serious behaviour problems)
The first thing is we do is take a comprehensive history, getting to know a bit more about you and your dog, finding out age, weight, fitness levels, and we carry out a body condition assessment.
We take into account any behavioural issues, any illness, allergies or food intolerances that could effect how your dog eats, or any individual nutritional requirements.
We then work closely with and your dog, coming up with a tailored nutrition plan to follow, helping resolve these issues.
Our end goal is to have a happy, healthy dog, eating regularly and enjoying meal times (Happy dog, Happy owner).

Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members had a fascinating meeting when former Deputy Haven Master for the Port of Bristol and Port Hydrographer Mark Burrows was their guest speaker and he brought along a presentation and answered many questions.
Head of Unit Nic Price said “During the evening Mark outlined his career as a Hydrographer which had taken him all over the World surveying the sea and sea-bed before spending 24 years at the Port of Bristol. Mark also covered the history of the Port of Bristol from Roman times right through to the present day when after Avonmouth Dock was built in 1877 and further extended in 1908 coal was then one of the main commodities
shipped. In 1977 after Royal Portbury Dock was opened the Port can now accommodate much bigger container ships upto 130,000 tonnes and has
a large trade in the import and export of motor vehicles and the Port also offers berths to a number of cruise liners throughout the year.”

Band to celebrate 45th year in Tewkesbury
Musicians from Crescendo Big Band are celebrating 45 years of performing swing and jazz hits in Tewkesbury.
