A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR OUR TOWN An exhibition to showcase plans for Tewkesbury is just one of the many positive steps being taken to ensure future prosperity. The Future Projects Exhibition, organised by Town Councillor Vernon Smith, with be held at the Watson Hall in Barton Street on Saturday 18th September (10am-4pm). Admission is free. Cllr Smith has coordinated the ‘Tewkesbury 2030’ event to display all the ideas for the future of the town under one roof. Everyone is invited to come along and express their views on the plans, ideas, proposals and projects. Topics include the M5 motorway junction improvements, the Ashchurch Garden Town Concept, new cycleways,
flood defence concepts, future policing, heritage development proposals, environmental issues and much more. A new rejuvenation initiative is also focussing on the development of the town. Organiser and local resident Tim Wright has

This is the translation of the latest book by the author of "The Reader", and in just a few words - it is very good. We follow the life of Olga Rinke, orphaned when very young who goes to Pomerania to live with her grandmother in the Prussian countryside. However there is no affection, and little familial connection between the two, and her rather lonely existence is eventually compensated for by a friendship with Herbert, the son of the local aristocratic landowner. Herbert is first introduced to us, the reader, as an infant, who is always on the move, restless even as a baby, and as a child running around, a habit he continues into adulthood; always arriving to meet Olga by running there. A restless boy who remains equally itinerant as he grows into adulthood. This excessive activity symbolic of how he will mature; always mobile, seeking adventure and exploration. Olga is bright, ambitious and though poor has set her sights on going to college, something she achieves; eventually returning back to her home village as the local school teacher. As children, this friendship is shared with Hector's sister, Viktoria; however she turns against Olga as she witnesses their developing relationship. An approach Viktoria then festers and agitates. Hector's parents are equally against the young couple formalising their love and threaten to disinherit him. Herbert joins the army and as a young officer is sent off to German SouthWest Africa. A willing participant in a period of German expansionism, and one where the Kaiser's forces gained a reputation for brutal empire building. He survives and returns but then his wanderlust sees him depart for South America. Herbert's experiences are also chronicled in some detail. By this time Olga is teaching in East Prussia, her move enforced upon her,
partially at Viktoria's instigation. It is here where Herbert returns to Olga, meets her new friends, and in particular a family to which Olga has become particularly attached. It is here in this locality, Herbert gives his first talk about Arctic exploration, the great North-East Passage and other feats he plans. The first of many presentations as he seeks backers for his ventures. Eventually he sets off for an island in the Spitsbergen archipelago, a year or so before the outbreak of the First World War. We follow their lives, and in particular Olga's over the decades, jumping forward to the WW2 and her fleeing the advancing Russian army and starting a new life, and making new friends who remain a constant voice in the second half of this book. It is the son of a family she works with, Ferdinand, who recounts the second half of the book, and unfolds the history of Olga and Herbert and their eternal love, even uncovering Olga's letters to Herbert sent to him in the frozen north, and recounts Olga's life in West Germany before and after unification. This is a story across decades of German history, but tells us of Olga's life, her love for Herbert, and how this love evolves. Light and Laughter as Lakefest returns

Once again the valley beneath Eastnor Castle was host to the magic of music, art, light and laughter as Lakefest made a joyful and triumphant return last month. Maybe it was the legendary Tom Jones, or possibly Razorlight? Perhaps The Red Devils, as they delivered thrills from the blue skies above. It could, of course, have been something like the annual Junior Talent Show, the International BMX display, or even the low-fi pleasure of children’s laughter. Whatever the reason, the weather gods smiled and the 15,000 members of Lakefest’s 2021 family, during the darkest of times, experienced a weekend like no other. Festival director Lee Martin could hardly believe the extraordinary success of his event, given the challenges faced whilst putting a show together against the backdrop of uncer-
tainty that the Covid era brings to each and every ambitious live Arts based enterprise. 2021 saw Lakefest reach for the stars, by assembling the most audacious collection of them in its eleven year history. Tom Jones, Razorlight, Scouting for Girls, Seasick Steve, The Magic Numbers, Stereo MC’s, Vengaboys and the extraordinary talent of the legendary Red Devils as they parachuted in. The Lakefest family reunited to share moments of togetherness, unity and some sense of a return to better days. “Putting on an event is always challenging, said Lee Martin. “This year seemed almost impossible at times with a broken supply chain and so many
obstacles but somehow we pulled it off. “The team worked so hard on the ground to build the infrastructure and then the bands,
crew and guests just created a magical vibe. “It was a total triumph. I can’t thank everyone involved enough.

Securing the Broadway to Honeybourne trackbed The future of the trackbed north of Broadway to Honeybourne, beyond the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s (GWSR) present northern terminus at Broadway, appears to be secure following a series of recent developments. This includes the wish of the present owner of the route, Railway Paths Limited (RPL) to transfer ownership to the GWSR. At present the GWSR is not in a position to extend the railway northwards and is unlikely to contemplate doing so within the foreseeable future. The railway is, however, keen to ensure nothing is done that could compromise any potential re-use of the trackbed as a railway. The GWSR was able to complete purchase the fifteen mile trackbed between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway in 1982. The long-held ambition of the founders of the railway was to ‘reopen as much as possible of the former Stratford-upon-Avon to Cheltenham line’ - an aspiration that remains to this day. The line was closed by British Rail in 1976 and the track and infrastructure was removed by 1980. Some years ago, the

four and a half mile section between Broadway and Honeybourne was transferred by the Department for Transport (DfT) to Railway Paths Ltd - a subsidiary of Sustrans which converts old railway routes into footpaths and cycle ways. Meanwhile, Network Rail improved its Worcester to Oxford ‘North Cotswold’ line between 2008 and 2011, which involved re-doubling the then-single
line through Honeybourne between Evesham and Hanborough; and re-building the station at Honeybourne. At that time, Network Rail approached the GWSR offering to make ‘passive provision’ for the heritage railway to eventually reach Honeybourne and use one side of the island platform on the Up side of the main line. The works carried out included re-aligning the junction for the branch line to Long Marston and replacing the bridge which carries the North Cotswold line over the trackbed of what would become the GWSR. RPL has now decided that the line does not fit their current strategy and wishes to dispose of it. It approached the GWSR as the obvious potential future user however, such a transfer needs approval of DfT, which was not forthcoming. Further liaison with the GWSR and the DfT is ongoing. Emerging Musicians Competition – The Final! VENUE, THE FOX AND HOUNDS BREDON By Rhi Milsom

It came as a surprise to us just how many weather apps are out there, and we know this to be true because we checked most of them. Despite multiple warning of severe thunderstorms, we set up outside, under cover of graceful but fragile gazebo, and put our trust in the one app that promised a dry evening… As it happened, we picked a winner: The show did go on, and without the unwelcome soundtrack of thunder or a spot of rain in sight! In the final hours, as our technical team were setting up and artists were arriving, we were also struck with a re-
minder of how the world is these days. A covid absence. Our final 4 became the fabulous 3 – but what a trio of talents they were, and all took advantage of the extra time allowance to remind us why they were in the final of the very first Emerging Musicians Competition. Erica Jean, Dom Veron and Lucy May Walker all brought their A game and delighted both the audience and the judging panel with some incredible talent. The Fox and Hounds, Bredon, provided the perfect venue for a summers evening of music, of fabulous food from local street food pop up ‘The Hungry Monkey’
and drinks a’ plenty, with ample outdoor space to create a pre-Lakefest festival vibe. Ultimately there could only be one winner. On the night Lucy May Walker pipped all at the post, using the space
between her whip-smart articulate and melodic songs to great effect. She had the entire audience hanging from her every word and even managed to get the judges to sing along! By Rhi Milsom.

CRAIG CRACKS AVON SWIM RECORD IN AID OF CANCER RESEARCH Craig Openshaw from the Tewkesbury area has become the first person to swim the 47.1 miles of the navigable River Avon. In doing so, he’s so far raised over £17,600 in aid of the charity Cancer Research UK. After putting in 130 hours training over three and a half months, Craig set off from Alveston Weir (just above Stratford-upon-Avon) at 8pm on Friday 16th July, and reached the Avon’s confluence with the Severn at Tewkesbury at 1am on Sunday 18th July. “In training we did numerous 26 and 30 mils swims to prepare for the challenge” said Craig. “Everything that could have gone wrong pretty much did. In the days leading up to the challenge, I picked up a bug from the river, causing me to loose 8lb though stomach issues, I also had a fever and temperature. “We decided to plough on anyway. Half way though the swim I injured my shoulder, and was swimming one armed for an hour or so. “I got some emergency physio from Tewkesbury girl Becky Stone and was able to continue. “We completed the

swim in 29 hours with no sleep, just a couple of short breaks. “We aimed to come in under 24 hours which should have been feasible, but the issues we encountered put the time back and into a second night’s swim. “We set out to raise £4,700 for Cancer Research UK. We’re now at £17,600. “I’m absolutely blown away by the support from everyone. There were literally over 100 people at certain spots along the river. “I was supported by a four man support crew. Rob had recently lost his father to cancer and Bob had lost his wife to can-
cer a few years back. So Cancer Research UK was the obvious charity for us. “On the Tuesday following the challenge I had to go to A&E as I was struggling for breath. “The virus I had before the swim lead to a lung infection and I had fluid on the lungs. I’m feeling a lot better now.” Craig has no immediate new challenges on the horizon, but would love some corporate sponsorship to get the amount raised to £20,000. Probus Club gets off to a ‘flying’ start Ron Hesketh, former Chief Chaplain to the Royal Air Force was the first speaker when Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club restarted our regular face-to-face talks with ‘live’ speakers (rather than images on a computer screen). This was an excellent and thought-provoking talk by Rev. Ron who apart from having been the RAF Chief Chaplain, has an impressive CV including being Chaplain to the Queen and the Royal Family. With his wide variety of experiences in the RAF and his close association with the Royal Family, Ron held our attention for the whole of his talk, given without any visual aids. He spoke on his experiences in the RAF (including in combat zones during the Iraq war), he gave us some interesting and intimate views of the Queen and various members of the Royal Family and spoke movingly about the moral dilemmas encountered by a Christian minister working for an organisation whose raison d’etre is ultimately to kill people. He also described some chilling moral dilemmas he experienced working in a war zone and the split-second decisions required when a life-or-death choice must be made by military personnel. Covid struck again when our speaker for the next talk found that a member of his family had contracted Covid so the speaker had to self-isolate and could

not attend. After a few urgent phone calls, we managed to secure David Terry to speak on climate change and he presented us with a most entertaining talk which all members agreed was one of the best they had attended.
The following week one of our own members, Doug Cockwill gave a nostalgic talk about his early years as a child in rural Devon living in the countryside with few modern facilities and how his life was utterly transformed when he
travelled to the Midlands and started an apprenticeship in a large engineering company in the heart of industrial Birmingham. We have a full speaker programme planned for the coming months, including Open Meetings

THE JAW
The temporomandibular joint is the name of the joint which includes the articulation of the mandible (jaw) and the temporal bone (part of the skull). It has to work very hard all day with chewing, talking and to an extent swallowing. The joint has an articular disc which moves forward when we open our mouths. A muscle pulls this disc forward allowing the jaw to open fully. Many people suffer with clicking jaws. This can be as a result of holding the jaw with tension, or grinding teeth. This clicking is the movement of the disc, not due to the muscle pulling it but the bone pushing it. This occurs when the muscle is under too much tension. Jaw trigger point therapy, although uncomfortable will aid this issue. However, limiting tension and cessation of teeth grinding will ultimately rid you of this issue. When I treat people with jaw issues, I always look at the joint between the skull and the spine and ask questions about hearing. These structures are so close that you can often have a combination of issues.
The temporomandibular joint
The jaw can be the initiating problem or simply the area which shows symptoms. By placing your index finger on the jaw joint (open and close the mouth to locate this), and placing a thumb on the bone behind your ear (mastoid process) this shows the location of the areas I am interested in. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ, index
finger) the ear canal (between the two fingers) and the occipitoatlantal joint (between the two thumbs one on either side of the vertebrae). RESERVE RECEIVES GRANT FROM GREEN RECOVERY CHALLENGE FUND Tewkesbury Nature Reserve’s project, “Developing TNR as a ‘green lung’ for community recovery”, has been awarded a grant from the Government’s £40 million second round of the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, a multi-million pound boost for green jobs and nature recovery. Ninety nature projects across England have been awarded grants from £68,100 to £1,950,000 to create and retain over 1,000 green jobs, backed by the Government’s £80 million Green Recovery Challenge Fund. out on over 600 sites from Northumberland to the tip of Cornwall. Combined with the first round, almost a million trees will be planted, contributing towards the Government’s commitment to treble tree planting rates across England by the end of this
Parliament. Tewkesbury Nature Reserve (TNR), an independent, environmental charity, provides a unique living laboratory (44 hectares) for outdoor learning and recreation. This funding success will step-change delivery of TNR’s Learning and Outreach Strategy. TNR will collaborate with a wide range of local organisations in delivering an eighteen month programme of outdoor learning for diverse groups, prioritising young people, and promoting personal health and wellbeing, care of others and environmental stewardship. The funding will support two new posts (a Learning and Outreach Officer and a Volunteer Co-ordinator), three sixmonth internships and a training programme for volunteers and the wider public. This will support citizen science activities, practical management and creative learning on the reserve. The project aims to build green skills and employability, and a larger, more diverse group of volunteers on
the nature reserve. TNR will share learning from the project with other urban floodplain nature reserves for increased resilience to degradation, the pandemic, and climate change.

Other funding to support learning on TNR has come from the Summerfield Trust, Gordon Gray Trust and UWE Bristol. The July edition of Tewkesbury Direct carried the good news of a historic building being brought back to life with the opening of the Riverside Café, writes John Dixon. The building was featured in ‘Then and Now’ in 2017. This has always been an enigmatic building, the subject of many questions on social media. We then called it the ‘Gazebo’. It reminds us that this bit of the riverbank was once part of the garden of the building on Church Street, which is now the YMCA. When the town was planned in the Middle Ages land, land was allocated in burgage plots, possessing 50foot frontages on one of the three main streets with land for food production stretching 200 feet to the rear. This plot was appropriately known as ‘Avonbank’, accommodating tanneries historically, until in 1878 when a boot and shoe factory was opened in the grounds. This plot was bought by Walter Jackson, a shirt manufacturer, who manufactured them until 1916. He must also have built the summer house (The ‘Gazebo’) which is included in the 1909 Land Tax survey; but there was no mention of the boathouse in the 1991 photograph. In 1916 the property was sold off in parts and the YMCA opened in the big house in 1917, while the factory building was occupied by different businesses (one of which was Fawcett’s in recent years.) I prophetically con-
cluded the 2016 article: “One wonders if the Gazebo would make a fine café to enhance the tourist appeal of our Riverside Walk”. Let us hope that this business thrives, bringing the Gazebo back to life. 䡵 Riverside Café, 2021

Tewkesbury Baptist Church Fun Day Posters from the Steam Age – Community Celebration 18th-19th September Posters from the Steam Age is gallery display that celebrates the life and work of Laurence Fish, the last of the UK’s great travel poster artists who painted compelling images for British Railways’ travel destination posters in the late 1950s and 1960s. The show takes place 18-19 September 2021, in the Tim Mitchell Building at Winchcombe Station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR). Original Laurence Fish posters are rare nowadays and can fetch considerable four-figure sums at auction. The event marks the centenary of the late Laurence Fish who latterly lived and worked in his studio in Winchcombe. It is being jointly presented with his widow, Jean Bray, who will be signing copies of her lavish biography of her late husband; Pick up a Pencil. Apart from his compelling rail travel work, Laurence Fish produced images for industry, aviation and publishing. In his early life he designed bespoke coachwork for car makers such as Alvis, Delahaye and Bentley while during WW2 worked for MI5 on counter-espionage, producing drawings of booby-trap devices - including an exploding bar of chocolate.
After having to cancel their fun day in July due to Covid-19, Tewkesbury Baptist Church are full steam ahead for a bumper Fun Day for the community on Saturday 11th September from 11:00am to 5:00pm. As well as the church groups providing displays it is also an opportunity for some community groups who use the church to showcase what they have to offer to our local community. A car boot sale will occupy part of the car park with other stalls having a variety of home - made produce and craft available to do and for sale. Refreshments will be available all day including hot dogs and beefburgers and cream teas. Children’s activities include the bouncy cas-
tle, craft, glitter tattoo and much more Live music will be on stage, together with open mic sessions and primary school age talent competition at the end of the afternoon. Entry is free but any donations will go to the Church ‘Community Build’ fund to provide affordable facilities for outside community groups. MORE GOLDS FOR TEWKESBURY BB Whilst our GB Olympians were getting ready to compete at the Tokyo games, members of the 1st Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade were planning their own Gold adventures by preparing for their DofE expedition. The original plan to go to France had to be changed due to the Covid restrictions, so a 4 day expedition canoeing on the River Severn replaced this. Starting at Shrewsbury, the team of 4 paddled over 120km, camping out each night and carrying all of their supplies and equipment with them. Arriving at Lower Lode on day 4 to be met by their DofE instructors and the assessor, the paddlers were elated with their achievement. Their assessor had been very impressed, not only by their paddling, but also the planning that went into the expedition. Boys’ Brigade Captain, Andrew Baldwin, was equally impressed and commented “I am very proud of the 4 Seniors who, despite all the restrictions that had been put in their way during Covid, showed their determination to continue with the award and achieve their Gold”. With a new Boys’ Brigade term about to start in early September, now is the time to join and do your DofE award with an organisation that provides a great personal
experience. Membership is open to young people from the age of 5-18 and over the last 65 years, Boys’ Brigade has continued to adapt and increase its range of activities so that

THE MILLER’S TRAIL At this time of year, when the meadows are still dry under foot, there is no more pleasant place to be than by the banks of the Avon, writes Jack B. Walker. This easy flat stroll takes us to both banks of Shakespeare’s beloved river, with excellent views of the twin mills at Fladbury and Cropthorne.

This easy flat stroll takes in both banks of the Avon, and gives us the chance to see the historic and picturesque twin mills of Fladbury and Cropthorne. Use the public car park at Jubilee Bridge. The bridge spans the Avon to link three neighbouring villages Fladbury, Cropthorne and Charlton. The original bridge was built in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. Before that time the only way to cross the Avon was by means of a water gate near Cropthorne. This was a series of gates and sluices on top of a weir, which could be closed when water was low, and enable the river to be forded. The 1887 bridge was replaced by the present iron arch structure in 1933. Leave the car park and cross the bridge, (1) and look out for a kissing gate on the right (2). Go through into the meadow, and walk along
䡵 Cropthorne Mill on the River Avon its edge with the road and a fence to your left. At the end of the meadow, bear right and then go over a footbridge on to a small island (3). Ahead of you is a bench where you may admire this lovely setting, and read the information boards which trace the history of the two mills here. Fladbury’s Mill is to the left: in front of you between the weir and the lock is the impressive red brick Cropthorne Mill. Go back over the foot-
bridge, but this time go along the river bank (with the Avon to your left) and follow the path back to the bridge. Here is another information board, beneath which are a few fragments of metal which are all that’s left of one of the original cast iron bridge’s supports. Go through the gate (2), and back over the bridge. Turn left up the lane which runs between car park and the Avon. Look for the yellow waymarker arrow on the left (4).
Follow the direction through the gate and down to the river. Bear right and follow the river bank until you reach the end of the meadow. Cross a footbridge (5) and bear left over a stile to reach the lock behind Cropthorne Mill. Keep the lock to your left, then cross another stile to return to the river bank. Opposite you now are the moorings of some Fladbury homes whose well manicured lawns sweep down to the Avon. Carry on along the path until you reach the railway bridge, where the path peters out (6). Retrace your steps back to the car park. There is a small picnic area by Jubilee Bridge, but there are three good pubs in nearby Fladbury and Charlton villages, which all serve excellent food. 䡵 PLEASE NOTE: do not attempt this walk when flood warnings are in place. The meadows, footpaths and roads will be under water!

Give your pet something to smile about this September This September we are repeating last years offer of a 10 % discount on all routine dental treatments. It is a way to encourage preventative dental care which I believe to be one of the most important disease preventing services that vets can offer. A healthy mouth is so important as dental disease is directly linked to heart and kidney disease as well as diabetes and liver disorders. The reason for this is that the bacteria and inflammation of an affected mouth can cause an “inflammatory cascade” resulting in organ damage. Put simply, a healthy mouth, helps to maintain a healthy pet. Statistics show that 60% of cats and dogs over 4 years of age have some degree of dental disease. Owners can sometimes mistakenly assume that a pets mouth is healthy if they continue to eat. Actually, a pet will often continue to eat even with a sore mouth and so a reduced appetite is not as common as many pet owners would imagine. The best way to check for dental disease is with a thorough examination of the pets mouth and this can generally be performed during a veterinary examination. It is very useful to train your pet to allow their mouths to be examined from an early age so that they become used to the process. We very commonly see inflammation of the gums which is called gingivitis and this is a common finding on younger pets too. Cat with gingivitis Even mild gingivitis is a symptom that the mouth isn’t healthy and a dental procedure such as a routine scale and polish or extractions might be necessary.
What can be done if we do find dental disease in your pet? We have a fully equipped dedicated dental suite and we perform dental radiography routinely as part of any dental procedure (we are the only practice in Tewkesbury to offer this), including a scale and polish. We understand the importance of the information that dental radiography provides. Our veterinary team routinely perform dental scales and polishes including surgical extractions when necessary.

Pare, core and slice the apples and stew until tender with the sugar and butter, and grated rind and juice from the lemon, then stir in the well beaten egg. Put half the breadcrumbs at the bottom of a well-greased baking tray and pour in the mixture. Put the rest of the crumbs on top, plus a small amount of butter and bake about half an hour. Decorate with a few slices of cooked apple.

The reserve is a local hotspot for a diverse range of migratory birds that head to the UK every spring from their wintering grounds in Africa. These include a healthy population of Reed Warblers that expertly weave their delicate nests around the reeds a mere few feet above the water; the Sedge Warblers that inhabit the scrub and waterside vegetation and the Whitethroat that prefer the hedgerows.

Tewkesbury Commons, require a new Clerk to the Commons Tewkesbury Commons is a Trust set up by Act of Parliament in 1808. By this Act, the Trust inherited grazing rights on Tewkesbury Ham from the Burgages (households) that fronted the three main streets of the town. Each year specific animals, mainly sheep, are grazed from August on. The income derived from letting the grazing (Aftermath) is then divided between the successors of the original occupants of the entitled properties. The Trustees employ a Clerk to the Commons to manage this process. The current Clerk wishes to hand over the role to a younger person. The position is voluntary however the Trustees are entitled to pay honoraria and expenses from the proceeds of the Aftermath income. The ‘Birmingham Evening Post’ said ‘In a Portrait of Elmbury there is an horrific description of Double Alley, facing the nursery of the Tudor House. The inhabitants, one gathers, used to come to the mouth of the alley in order to break all of the Ten Commandments under the fascinated gaze of the infant
John Moore’. It was this fascinated gaze which gave it its fame and notoriety. The alley has long gone, though; swept away, despite John Moore’s best efforts, by the ‘mods’ and replaced with the Bishop’s walk complex. To trace its route today, you’d start at the corner of Boots by the door and travel through the
store, then all the other shops on that side of the precinct, emerging on Oldbury Road conveniently opposite the door to the Albion. The alley name is unusual in describing its width, which was also unusual. Having passed through the ‘front house’, 87 High Street, the alley widens by extending behind
…continued on P41 88. Before about 1840, the alley behind 87 was known as Castle Alley. James Castle bought the property, from the High Street to the Oldbury Field (Road) in 1766 for £109. It was described as extending to the tenement or dwelling house late of Francis Edgecombe, mason. In a sale notice of 1810 a tenement in Edgecombe’s Alley is listed. No other references to this alley have been found, but this advertisement also includes the sale of two cottages in Castle’s Alley. No survey was carried out before the demolition to create Bishop’s walk, so there are only a few photos for evidence. This 1958 photograph shows the alley (now rebranded

Whilst not all families were chaotic, the alley had a great deal of petty crime, much of it of the sort which would be ignored today. Riding bicycles without lights, swearing in public, stealing mushrooms from fields or juveniles stealing daffodils from Mrs Ruddle’s garden on the Mythe would not result in court appearances and fines today. Kharki Sheldon, the daffodil thief, was let off, on condition that his father gave him a thrashing. That was in 1913. George Smith, lodging house keeper, clearly had a sideline of pig rearing on his premises, which was the occasion-
al subject of complaints from the sanitary committee. The lack of sanitation, water supplies, adequate drainage and working toilets, were also frequently on the agenda, with instructions to remedy being issued but slowly implemented by absent landlords. It was a slum on a par with the worst of the big cities. In 1926, the alley hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but it did prick the conscience of those who had the power to remedy the situation. In January a young labourer was charged with a ‘very serious offence against his sister’. It came to the County assize in February, before Mr. Justice Sankey, who questioned Police Inspector Welshman personally, getting a re-

The father, mother, four sons, four daughters, and two illegitimate children lived in the three rooms of the cottage. In one bedroom nine of them slept. That was about seven or eight yards by four yards”. He was found guilty, but the jury strongly recommended mercy. Things changed very slowly, and though this house, and two others in the alley were issued with closing orders it took a very long time to empty the houses, but the Council decided on improving them, rather than demolition, making two substandard ‘hovels’ into a modern, compliant, dwelling. This caused outrage
in some quarters, as the policy had been demolition with new housing being provided elsewhere in the town. Changing the alley name to ‘Oldbury Walk’, to get away from the old stigma, brought a similar reaction. Ten years later, demolition became the preferred. Much cheaper, option and by the outbreak of war a lot of the cottages in the alley had gone. It was 1954 before piecemeal demolition recommenced. In 1963, the Oldbury Road Clearance Area Compulsory Purchase Order was published, which quickly led to this alley and its neighbours being erased from Tewkesbury’s street plan, but not from Tewkesbury’s memory.

Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service were very pleased to welcome the Chief Volunteer Officer Captain Nick Spencer for an inspection and training evening afloat with the Unit on 11th August. Unit members took him for a river patrol on the River Avon in their Unit training vessel Minerva and then they moored up by Avon Lock for a Fish and Chip Supper. Head of Unit Nic Price said “The evening went very well indeed and it gave the Unit an opportunity to show the CVO what we do on a regular basis on the river and we congratulated him on recently receiving the Merchant Navy Medal from HRH The Princess Royal.”

DO YOU WISH YOU WERE ARTISTIC? Dear readers, I am an artist and teacher who has been running art classes for some years. I’m a great believer in the mental benefits of art, especially in the last year and a half. Despite lockdown I have managed to overcome the tricky problems of technology and run successful, on-line art classes. These are all about improving a range of art skills and developing confidence and channelling lots of energy towards a hobby that can take a person away from daily life. With Covid my students have talked alot about how its been great for them to have art as a regular part of their week. The positive effects of being linked with others and able to chat about their artwork and feel supported, has been great. Even if they haven’t done any art since they were at school, everyone finds they are uplifted by the
enjoyment they get from it. Now, I’m really excited to say that face to face lessons are due to begin again in September. I am running them from Tredington Village Hall, near Stoke Orchard. Its a really light and airy hall with plenty of free parking, so ideal! I’m doing a shout out for anyone who might want to come and join this beginner’s group. It may be that someone hasn’t got any experience or may be a bit rusty. I always ensure people feel supported and encouraged in giving it a go. I’m hoping this new class takes off and people sign up to join me. It would certainly feel brilliant to be running lessons in person again. Tewkesbury School A Level achievers, against the odds Students in Tewkesbury and across the country deserve all the plaudits they receive today having experienced the worst disruption to their study programmes for over a generation. With so many days of formal schooling missed due to the pandemic, students and teachers have had to go above and beyond in order to achieve creditable outcomes this morning. What students have lost in day to day contact, they have made up for in maturing more swiftly into independent learners taking control of their own destinies. Everything has been stacked against them and yet they have all come through with flying colours.
Given the obstacles they have had to face, they deserve all the plaudits they receive for their resilience in the face of such significant disruption. Our students are better prepared than ever to enter the workplace and continue their education at universities and colleges. We offer them our congratulations and very best wishes for the future. A personal message from Gary Watson, Head of Tewkesbury School. As children celebrate their GCSE results across the county, I urge you to pause for a second and reflect on the immense challenges that these young adults have faced and overcome. This year’s students, unlike any in this generation or mine before it, have suffered widespread and continual disruption over the entire duration of their GCSE and BTEC programmes of study. Furthermore, they have missed opportunities to display their wide range of broader talents through, amongst other things, competitive sport, school productions and musical performances. Moreover, they been
robbed of the opportunity to prove themselves in terminal exams and missed out on the joy of end of school rituals and proms. They were assessed under a completely different assessment system to their predecessors and one that renders any comparison with previous years utterly meaningless; a system determined by Government and implemented in fine detail by schools. Whilst the national media rath-

er predictably questions the validity of their achievements, those of us closer to the action be that students, parents or educationalists like me, know just how hard this year’s cohort have had to work to realise their potential. It is fantastic that our local media outlets are continuing to give our young people the unquestioning, true recognition that they deserve. Tewkesbury students performed well and have had to take greater own-
ership of their learning and develop greater independence more swiftly due to the circumstances they have faced. We wish each and every one of them, and their peers across the county, all the very best for the future. SEVERN UNIT MVS SUPPORTS ROYAL BRITISH LEGION In August, Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service were pleased to support two special events organised by Rod Gurney from the Royal British Legion. The month started with a Service of Thanksgiving for Armed Forces Day which was held in Tewkesbury Methodist Church. This replaced the usual Armed Forces Day Parade held in June which was cancelled due to Covid restrictions at the time. Then on the 15th August, to mark the VJ Day Commemoration, a special service was held outside the Town Hall and members of Severn Unit joined with Town Mayor Cllr. Joanne Raywood, other members of the Council and members of the British Legion with the Town Crier introducing the Service. Head of Severn Unit Nic Price said “After nearly 18 months of Covid restrictions it was a great pleasure and honour for us to attend these important events in the town”.

Keeping cats healthy and comfortable with grooming assistance Although I don’t feel its necessary to regularly bath a cat in shampoo and water, I do feel cats benefit from regular grooming, writes Jo Knight. For long haired cats it is a daily necessity. In my experience long haired cats can appear to be coping, but there is a build-up of dead fluff, which, in time, will cause hair ball problems, knots and matting.
It’s a good time to start grooming at kitten stage. Making it an enjoyable experience will make life so much easier in the future. Choose a quiet time.

I offer a kitten groom and advice on brushes (up to a year old) for £10 when I’m your area. If you have an older cat who is not so keen on a brush or is anxious because they are starting to knot up, do the same little and often. Don’t use scissors. Cat’s skin is like tissue paper and if nicked, it can rip. And don’t wet them - trying to wash out matts will exaggerate your problem. It may be good to get a professional groom to get back to a matt and fluff free coat and then
start slow and easy to grooming acceptance. Advantages of grooming your cat: • Removing dust, garden debris, dead skin and loose hairs prevents serious tangling and matting. • Brushing distributes the natural oils which maintain skin and coat health. • It improves circulation and massage their muscles. • Quality time with your companion and opportunity to monitor their health. The Anchor’s landlady, Loz Murray, had the idea of opening her doors to various groups of local people, including the town’s historians. “The group met monthly at noon on a Tuesday in the two years before lockdown, and we nicknamed ourselves the Anchor University,” said John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. “Students chose an illustrated lecture from
me, and we then enjoyed a discussion, followed by lunch.” Loz will welcome the students’ return on Tuesday 7th September from 12 noon until 2pm, and a ‘finger lunch’ will be provided. “Hopefully on the seventh we shall review what we have learned and plan for an active future,” John added. “We shall revise our studies pre-epidemic
