During the Spring lockdown I caught up on reading one book which I had put aside and never managed to pick up and read. This was by the Norwegian prize winning author Roy Jacobsen, entitled "The Unseen" it is the story of the childhood, and early life of Ingrid Barroy who lives on an island that carries her family name, and is located amongst the islands along the northern coast of Norway, Tromso being the local regional town. The setting alone makes this book a worthwhile read. The characters within Ingrid's family are somewhat diverse, and their forays across the sea to get provisions, and her father's yearly fishing trips are the main diversions from this family saga. To use the word "saga" however is wrong as this story is about Ingrid growing up and becoming a capable islander who can fish, farm, and row as well as anyone, indeed all the women have to be very diverse with their skills. Within "The Unseen" we are witness to her early life, schooling, and how her island home instills early responsibility and adulthood onto her young shoulders. This is set after the First World War without ever being time specific. In the second volume, "White Shadow," Ingrid is a young woman in her thirties, WW2 is in full fight, and Norway is suffering under Nazi cruelty and repression. Ingrid is alone on the island until following naval action bodies start being

washed up, and she finds a lifeboat and eventually a survivor who she rescues and saves. They become lovers but she is unaware whether he is a Russian or a German or what nationality; but in helping him evade local Nazis and collaborators, leads her in to endure much suffering. It is the story of those experiences after her brief affair, and her subsequent return to her island which provides the depth to this sequel. The war brings refugees, hardship, but also ambition, and as peace dawns, and the Norwegians try to rebuild their country, we experience Ingrid's and her family's reemergence into times of peace. The third volume, "Eyes of the Rigel" is now out, but only in hardback, I will not delay in reading that to see how Ingrid's life evolves. I am so glad I picked up "The Unseen", which I enjoyed, but in some respects I found "White Shadow" the better story, possibly as there is less dialogue which does require some careful reading, but please do not be put off by that, two good books, worth reading in sequence.

ALPACAS SETTLING INTO THE BARN The area could soon have a new visitor attraction, once a herd of alpacas have settled into their new home at Puckrup, just outside Tewkesbury. Teresa Evans, who runs the aesthetic treatment business Beauty at The Barn, welcomed the alpacas to her grounds back in February. “We have always had a fascination with the animals, and during November last year I got chatting to a local lady whose husband is a breeder - and the rest is history,” said Teresa. “I have been spending lockdown getting close to the boys and in July I attended a British Alpacas Society affiliated introductory course. “I was taught how to safely catch an alpaca, fit a head collar, how to

lead an alpaca, feeding and basic alpaca management, vaccinations, worming and supplements. “We created ‘Alpacas at the Barn’ as we would like to share the alpaca experience with the public. “Once the boys are trained I will be open to the public so they can to spend time with the alpacas, either feeding, walking, sitting or interaction - the options are endless.” All Teresa’s animals are Huacaya alpacas, which is the most commonly found. Alpacas are herd ani-

mals and are considerably smaller than llamas, with which they are often confused. Both breeds come

from the camelid family and are native to South America, with the highest numbers being found on the Andean plateau

in Peru. Alpaca wool is traditionally used to make scarves and sweaters. For further informa-

Magazine Trusted Trader Award Tewkesbury businessman Liam Mellor is delighted to have received the Trusted Trader award (August 2020) from consumer champions Which? magazine. LCM Flat Roofing is a local company with a fine reputation. Run by Bredon couple Liam Mellor and his fiance Joanna, the company has repaired many roofs in and around Tewkesbury. They have also carried out work to the highest standards in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Which? magazine said the application for the award “stood out from the crowd, with a detailed,passionate application.”

Initially, Liam and Joanna had plans for their company to specialise in flat roofs. But over the years the business has evolved to deal with other aspects of roofing, such as pitched roofs, chimneys, soffits and guttering. Liam points out that conservatory conversions are becoming very popular. This involves removing the original glass roof, tiling it, complete with a plastered ceiling and lighting installed. This can prevent conservatories from

getting too warm in the summer, or too chilly in the winter.

TEWKESBURY BASED CHARITY SAYS ‘COVID CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC’ If you have, or are caring for someone with, dementia, or perhaps you have COPD, you may well have heard of Mindsong. The Gloucestershire charity, whose headquarters is in Tewkesbury, is all about music and health, and provides services all over the county. Mindsong has 14 specialist music therapists, a team of vocal leaders and an army of 400 trained volunteers. The therapists work in someone’s own home, and in care homes. The vocal leaders run NHS singing groups (Breathe in Sing out) teaching better breathing techniques. The volunteer teams bring dementia-specific music to 54 care homes all over the county, including of course, Tewkesbury. When Covid-19 arrived, plans were in place so that no one would be without support. Karen Lawton (CEO) said, ‘The people we work with, particularly those still living at home or who have serious lung conditions, were already isolated before the pandemic. Lockdown made things much worse. We quickly realised that we were one of the only organisations still working in the community once the NHS was fully occupied with Covid-19. It was vital that we adapted quickly to make sure everyone had the sup-

GOING UP BREDON HILL, COMING DOWN A supreme effort to raise funds, by Rotary Club Member, Anthony Stockman Having made the decision to cancel the Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival, (Tewkesbury Rotary’s biggest fund raiser), the charity coffers were now decidedly low on funds and I/we needed to ‘pull something out of the bag’. So at the beginning of June I decided to have a go at ‘Everesting’ – and enlisting the help of our ‘super media savvy’ Rebecca Leppard, (who incidentally does all our Vehicle Festival promotion), a plan took shape. Did I really know what I was taking on, or how tough it would be for a 72 year old? Actually, I think I did. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, even with e-mountain bikes, since they’re twice the weight on average of their un-assisted equivalents, but I was reasonably confident that with some consistent stamina training over the next couple of months, I could pull it off. It would take 2 days. The intention was to make Everest Base Camp height (or better) on day 1, involving 22 climbs, and 16 more the following day to achieve summit height of 29,028 Feet (old money), the climb was to take place up Bredon Hill from Overbury. And so on Thursday August 19th , at 8.00 am armed with 3 bikes, I started the runs. I reckoned I could do 3 climbs an hour, with stops at 6 for a ‘fuel break’, which would probably take me until early evening. In

fact, it all went rather better; rarely stopping – and only for fluids, by 2.30 in the afternoon I’d hit 22! As I felt reasonably ok, except for some left knee pain and swelling, I decided to do another 4, taking the height to over 20,000 feet. And a good job I did, as the forecast for the following day – Friday, was dire and so it turned out to be. Gale force winds and driving rain stopped me after 2 runs, and so we waited ½ an hour for them to pass. I shortened the next 8 runs slightly, by 8 metres in height to stay on the tarmac, as the

conditions at the top were so bad and the wind so strong, I had to peddle downhill! To compensate, I did an extra run, making it 39 in all, with the result that by the end, the 45 mph wind dried me completely! We then opened a couple of bottles of bubbly to celebrate (Well, it would have been rude not to!) P.S: The fund is still open and we really need your support. GETTING THROUGH THE RED TAPE THE OLD FASHIONED WAY Here is a brilliant story from days gone by, told by Roger Workman of Kemerton… “Fred Gyngell applied to put a petrol pump outside his store located at Tewkesbury Cross in 1930 but the council rejected it so he purchased the gas lamp that stood outside the shop that was on the edge of the pavement, then attached a petrol pipe to it, the other end of the pipe was connected to the petrol tank in the shop. The council told him to remove it, because it was dangerous, but he would not so they took him to court and he proved to the court that it was not a gas lamp but a petrol pump and won the case. In 1953 the ministry of transport ruled that petrol pumps could not stand by the sides of the road and so he was asked to move it to the other side of the pavement which he refused to do, so he was taken to court. This time he proved to the court that it was not a petrol pump but a gas lamp and won the case. Fred said to my father that when he dies my father can have the gas lamp which duly happened and my father passed it down to me and my wife Gill. When first had it, it was painted black but during

some decorating work, Phil Sweet of Sweet & Son, rubbed down the lamp post and revealing the original colour, as it would have been, outside Freds the shop. Phil has done a great job repainting it, back in burgundy, gold and black, it now looks fantastic.”

The history behind Calico House I have long wished to know why Calico House is so named and what it replaced, writes John Dixon. It was named by its first owner after the home she enjoyed in the former Dock Area of London on Plantation Wharf in Battersea. The site was a bit more interesting. It was the rear of the historic Burgage Plot behind 21 High Street which, for much of the 20th century, was occupied by first Cooks then HF Martin. They used the land for raising the flowers and vegetables sold in the shop. At one time, they built greenhouses to grow early crops but, as the century developed, part of the plot was dedicated to the inevitable garage – which was flat roofed. The whole site was cleared as a result of the Riverside Walk project. Now the Vaping Shop which occupies 21 High Street has no need for an allotment. Between Calico House and the Hanover Court flats (not German but named after the original operating company!) there is Wilkes Alley with its blue bricks, indicating that it is a public right of way. This is deceptive because the Alley towards the Mill Avon was covered by the flats and it now occupies the route of another unnamed, and now closed, alley through no. 20 High Street.

MODEL FAIR IN MOTION AT MUSEUM Mr Alfred Salt’s fabulous model fairground is now back in motion at Tewkesbury Museum in Barton Street. After two years hard work, volunteers at the museum are putting the finishing touches to the model fair which has been, on and off, part of Tewkesbury life for the past half century.

As displayed it consists of five major rides – Gallopers, Mini-cars, Chair-0-planes, Steam Yachts and a Big Wheel. In addition, there are static rides, stalls, caravans and hundreds of people. This is only a part of the original display, hand made by Mr Salt in the 1950s, when, it was, he boasted, the “best in Britain”. The fair was later given to Tewkesbury Council by a Councillor Husband and installed in the Town Hall basement.

It was declared open in 1968, but cramped and damp in the old police cells, it ran there for about a year, before gradually falling into disuse. In the 1980s it was rescued and taken to the museum. Tewkesbury Fair Society and the museum restored five of the rides, though without power. Two years ago, the museum decided to again restore the fair, this time with motors, lights and music. In addition, the whole display would occupy the ground floor front room, acting as a shop window display to attract people into the museum. The result is, to be frank, stunning. The rides are housed on a specially made table with explanatory panels on the front. Along the rear of the table top runs a specially created 3D streetscape of Tewkesbury in the 1950s, and on top sit the rides, stalls, caravans and a crowd of people. For me this would be perfect. Clients returning from Italy are saying that it has been fantastic to visit the ancient sites without the crowds. You will never see the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Pompeii or any other Italian treasures with so few people, so if you want to go then go when it is quiet either now or into the New Year. Of course, many of you will not feel comfortable going anywhere and will have written this year off entirely but there is always next year and hopefully there will be a vaccine and we can all get on with our lives and return to some form of normality.

Confusion over payment options in town car park Reader Simon Hopkins of Tewkesbury writes: Recently, the RingGo system payment app was made compulsory in the Vineyards car park. Cash payment options were not adjacent to the RingGo payment screen and no explanation or notice was provided indicating cash payment could be made. Something like 40% of Town visitors will not use a smartphone, thus could not use the RingGo App. The majority of visitors will get the idea it’s RingGo only, a number will leave (not stay) because they find the process difficult or impossible. I spoke to 8 visitors, by chance on 8 Aug in the car park (when taking photos of the machines), all not happy. Simon Hopkins.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

HAMMING IT UP IN UPTON Upton-upon-Severn is a delightful riverside town with an interesting history - and is perfect for a late summer afternoon stroll, writes Jack B. Walker. It grew in importance as a port centuries ago, and was also one of the few crossing places on the Severn between Tewkesbury and Worcester. Today Upton attracts visitors all year round, is a haven for boating enthusiasts and, in pre-pandemic times, played host to several music festivals, including folk and jazz. River defences now protect the town from the waters of the Severn, but please check local flood warnings before setting off just in case! This is a totally flat walk, which starts from the free car park in the town centre, next to Upton Rugby Club. If

䡵 River Severn at Upton from the Ham this is full, there is a pay and display car park off the B4211 Hanley Road. Leave the Rugby Club

car park and cross over the road opposite the parish church (1). Turn right along the pavement, and just before the Fire Station, bear left into Minge Lane. At the t-junction with Rectory Road (2), turn right and carry on along to its end. At the end of the road bear right and go down the lane which leads to Buryend Farm (3). Pass through the farm and follow the way markers which lead across fields and down the River Severn. When you meet the riverbank, (4) turn left

and follow the footpath keeping the Severn on your right. You are now on the Lower Ham, and as you pass the old railway embankment, you will see the vast expanse of the main ham ahead of you. This is a popular spot for anglers and walkers; the path you are now on is part of the long distance Severn Way. Dogs should be kept on leads as sheep graze here from the summer months until February. Upton Ham is a nature reserve, and is traditionally managed to preserve flora and fauna. Due to the Severn floods, the soil is very rich and many rare wild flowers and plants thrive here. Carry on along the path. The buildings on the opposite bank are a waterworks, and a little further along - as you reach Upton - you can see the entrance to the marina, where many pleasure craft are moored. This side of the

left (6) to return to the town centre. The former ‘pepperpot’ church on the right now houses the tourist information centre. At the junction with the main road, carry on straight ahead, passing the Anchor Inn to your left. Keep going ahead, until you return to point one.

Give your pet something to smile about this September As Tewkesbury’s longest established veterinary practice we have seen first hand the rise in puppy and kitten ownership as lock down took effect, writes Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Vets. Across the country with more people on furlough or working from home, they have realised that this could be a prime time to introduce a puppy or kitten into their lives. It has been rewarding to be able to give professional, experienced and honest advice, working with owners to assist in the best introduction of their new family member into the new home. With the rise of new puppy and kitten ownership it is easy to overlook the hugely important role that vets play in the welfare and health in middle aged and senior pets. Whilst, as a pet grows older they are more likely to develop “wear and tear, ” age itself is not a disease and there is much that owners can do to give their pets a healthy and comfortable quality of life in

their senior years. Our team of vets, veterinary nurses and support staff at Folly Gardens Vets are trained to be proactive. They have a wealth of experience and are able look for signs of problems at an early stage and give advice on what we can do together to keep the pets happy and healthy. An example of this is dental disease. Statistics show that 60% of cats and dogs over 4 years of age have some degree of dental disease. Owners can sometimes mistakenly assume that a pet’s mouth is healthy if they continue to eat. Actually, they will often continue to eat even with a very sore mouth and so a reduced appetite is not as common as many pet owners would imagine for pets suffering from dental disease.

The best way to check for dental disease is with a thorough examination of the pet’s mouth and this will be performed during a veterinary health examination. It is very useful to train your pet to allow their mouths to be examined from an early age so that they become tolerant of this procedure.

Tewkesbury Christmas Lights 2020 The Tewkesbury Christmas Lights switch on event which is due to take place on Sunday 22 November has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It wouldn’t be Christmas

in Tewkesbury without the festive lights lining the streets in the town, so the volunteering committee have put out a plea to the people of Tewkesbury to help raise the funds. It costs

around £8000 a year to erect the lights in the town. This involves a number of things including; insurance, testing and labour to put them up and take them down overnight, on occasions

in all weathers. The lights will be switched on and broadcast virtually via the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Facebook page at 5pm on 22 November with Father Christmas and his Elves taking to the screen. Fundraising is in full swing, with many local businesses and residents of the town dipping their hands into their pockets to help raise money for the lights to be put up in 2020. Carole-Ann Rowley from Kellands said “We are delighted to be one of the main sponsors of 2020 Tewkesbury Christmas Lights

Festival. Based in the Mustard House, in Barton Street, we shall enjoy seeing the streets lit up over the festive period illuminating Tewkesbury at its best!”. Committee member, Carol Crilly cannot wait to see the lights up in the town; “We have been working throughout this hot summer getting everything prepared for Christmas. Lots of people have kindly donated via our Justgiving page and sponsor a bulb forms and we are so grateful to everyone who have donated so far, but we still need more money to be able to put the lights up around the

town in November.” “We joined up with Kellands and other local businesses to do a sponsored walk in our Christmas outfits around the town in August, it was a really hot day but we all managed it! OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild Compton’s Alley is named after the Compton family who occupied the ‘front house’, 77 Barton Street, for over a hundred years. They were

a dynasty of cabinet makers. The last, Theophilus Compton, ran an extensive business making and retailing furniture, with a warehouse in

Compton’s Alley Entrance

COMPTON’S ALLEY East Street. After his death in 1903 the property was sold. In 1995, three sets of legers

were found in the attic. Two were Theophilus Compton’s order books from the 1870s, giving an interesting insight into his business life. These were the subject of an article (77 Barton Street) which can now be read on the Tewkesbury Historical Society web site. The alley runs between Barton Street and Swilgate Road, the most westerly of a series of alleys off Barton Street, the most complete group in the town. It sits alongside the plot which once contained the Star and Garter Inn, the rear of which became Tewkesbury’s second Baptist chapel, the old inn entrance becoming Chapel Court.

Compton’s Alley contained thirteen cottages at the 1841 census which had reduced to ten by the beginning of the twentieth century. A sale notice from 1837 for a stable in the alley states that it could be converted to a cottage, so there was some flexibility of

poverty and it had its tragedies. Where there is proximity to water, small children died, and in 1886 Selina Barratt, aged three, went out to play with other children, fell into the Swilgate and drowned. Some years earlier, Emma Cooper, a child of less than three

use, though there must have been some difficulties in manoeuvring horses in the confines of an alley and what they were like as neighbours is anyone’s guess! In 1841, three cottages were empty, six were occupied by framework knitters or stocking makers and one by a needle-maker, which shows the importance of the industry to Tewkesbury. Over time, numbers reduced until in 1881 there were just two stocking makers. It was a quiet alley compared with some on the High Street but it was still riddled with

years burned to death when left with her siblings whilst her mother, described as a ‘poor woman’, went out to work as a char woman. The little girl had been standing before the fire to warm herself, and her clothes caught fire. There were other tragedies and some mysteries. In 1905, Charles Kirk, a ‘somewhat eccentric’ chimney sweep, who lived alone left his home in Compton's Alley to walk to Ashton-under-Hill, and then to return home by train. He was seen at Conderton, but nothing further was seen of him

These youngsters have been dealt a harsh hand but I have no doubt they will go on to achieve great things on the back of some first-class results. Any thoughts I may have had about the ease of beekeeping – a quick check on the hives now and then, before extracting lots of honey – were soon proved wrong. Beekeeping is quite eventful, with surprises every time you open the

hive. It wasn’t long before I was hooked. I had found my new hobby. The hives are checked weekly to make sure the queen is still in residence, is laying eggs, her brood looks healthy, the worker bees are doing their jobs, and that they are bringing home nectar and pollen. You also need to be aware of potential problems you may encounter, including swarming; invasion from enemies such as wasps or hornets, even woodpeckers; internal power struggles, and much more. A week in a hive can be more eventful than a year’s worth of Eastenders. We now have three hives (the third being called Anne) and the bees’ numbers have massively increased. We have even had our first few jars of honey. The aim in the first year is to grow strong and secure bee colonies and look to build on this in the coming years. I would love you to join me on my steep learning curve of a journey and will cover in these articles such topics as how bees ‘do the impossible’ and fly, the different jobs worker bees do, unique properties of honey, how the queen controls 45,000 bees and much, much more. We are confident of great things for the hives, including being able to sell our own honey in our own shop, Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts, in 2021. Mitton Manor Green VJ Day Celebration There was a real party atmosphere on Mitton Manor Green on Saturday 15 August! On VE Day, like many other Tewkesbury folk, the residents of Old Manor Lane and its surrounds had emerged cautiously from Lockdown to meet neighbours for an (appropriately distanced) chat and drink. The occasion proved so popular that it quickly became a weekly event. With the approach of VJ Day it was decided to be a bit more ambitious and have a flower and produce show to celebrate the end of WW2 in the Far East. Circulars were delivered around the area announcing the event and inviting residents to participate in various classes such as cakes, flowers, vegetables. On the day the organisers erected gazebos, put out chairs and hoped someone would turn up. Well, in the event lots of people came, carrying lots of produce. The tables were groaning with carrot cakes, colourful flower arrangements, funny

shaped vegetables and so on. The judges had a hard job deciding winners but once diplomas were awarded everyone sat down to a cup of tea and, of course, a piece of cake! Note: Many of you in the area will be aware of the ongoing attempt to

have Mitton Manor Green registered as a village green in order to preserve it as a common meeting place for local residents. The application is presently being considered by Gloucestershire County Council.

I am fortunate enough to work alongside a podiatrist, so within my professional setting I can see clearly how important it is to have your foot health well managed. This can mean anything from making sure you cut your nails correctly and treat fungal infections to making sure you are walking correctly with the correct foot mechanics which then will enable a normal gait. Incorrect foot balance can result in poor mechanics reaching all the way up the skeleton. If its comfortable then its probably ok. If you have sore feet by the end of the day then your footwear may not be supporting you correctly. For a short while Susan Evans, alias Black Sal, lived in the alley with her sister’s family. She was once described by Inspector Selwood as an Intolerable nuisance, and her many court appearances for petty theft and peddling suggest that he was probably right. The alley suffered from many of the same problems as other alleys as regards hygiene and sanitation. Its first wash-house and toilet block was built at the foot of the alley, on the bank of the Swilgate. Demolished in the 1960s, this was known locally as Tommy Craddock’s Duckhouse, though Tommy Craddock seems to have faded from memory. The cottages in the alley came under early scrutiny after 1918, when the rehousing programme started. In 1920, three houses were declared unfit for habitation and a closure notice was issued. In 1933 it was the turn of the rest of the alley. The bureaucratic process was slow and tortuous. A demolition order for six houses, owned by Mrs Halling, was recommended in 1934. There was a stay of execution for some in 1935, when they were refurbished as temporary accommodation for displaced families. By 1937 the Borough Surveyor was reporting that the last

Back to the beginning: I am truly crazy about crafting, and have been from way back when I was a child, constantly asking for scissors, paper, glue etc. Being creative is in my genes, with Mum being a fantastic knitter, Dad a pretty good artist, and my Gran could rustle up a mean Easter bonnet!

Fast forward to more recent times and I became a little obsessed with crochet. I set up a Stitch and Bitch Group for like-minded people back in 2013 which

During lockdown crafting has given me purpose and it is definitely my therapy when things are difficult. I began crocheting rainbows as a symbol of hope and thanks for key workers. I gave them to friends to cheer them up. I found the flower pattern on a blogsite called Attic24. Patterns are free but donations are encouraged. I put my own spin on it and used beads and tassels (I love a tassel!). I sent a picture to Louise and Mike at the fabulous Tewkesbury Cards and Gifts and here we are! The flowers have really taken off and I reckon I could make them in my sleep now! As a result of

losing my job I have decided to make my hobby into a business. I make items to order. I crochet blankets, needlefelt (look out for my bumble bees and angels in Cards and Gifts), I use beads and buttons to make bespoke pictures, I make cards and clay jewellery. I don't mean through the medium of computers and other technological devices, although I am using a computer now. No, I mean an actual face to face exchange of words. Spoken words. Some might say that this is a dying art and I have to admit that I have some sympathy for that point of view. There are indeed people who find great difficulty in having a face to face conversation.

The first trains on the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway since the lockdown all ran to great success. All trains on the initial weekend of operation sold out. The railway has been working hard over the past few weeks, since the announcement that the GWSR would be restarting services on 15th August, to make sure that visits are as safe as possible for pas-

sengers, volunteers and local residents. All travel needs to be pre-booked and consists of one return journey starting and finishing at Toddington. Tickets are available to purchase on a rolling two weekly basis, to enable the GWSR to monitor customer demand.
