Tewkesbury Foodbank has held some successful fundraising events over the summer, including providing the refreshments for Three Choirs Festival events at the Abbey. In August volunteers also took over running the Abbey’s Touching Souls Tearoom, raising vital funds for the town’s increasingly important Foodbank facility.
Project Manager Marion Badham has put out an appeal for more volunteers to take over the planning of future events. “We are really looking for either one or more volunteers who would like to be the team leaders,” said Marion in the Foodbank’s latest newsletter. APPEAL FOR NEW FRIENDS GROUP TO PRESERVE TOWN’S RIVERSIDE GARDENS The Friends of Victoria Pleasure Gardens formed in 2008, to rescue Tewkesbury’s small riverside park from neglect and desolation. The gardens are beautiful and a real asset to the town. They are free for everyone to enjoy, and run alongside the Mill Avon. There are entrances in Gloucester Road and Mill Street. Age and ill health, however, are preventing the current volunteers from continuing. Dawn Hunt, Chair of the Friends of Victoria Gardens, has put out an appeal. “We have decided that we need to find a new group of enthusiasts to take over, ideally, as a friends group in their own right, “ said Dawn. “We have a shed near the gardens with equipment available, if anyone is interested. “It would be wonderful if these fabulous gardens continue to flourish. Runners put best feet forward for charity Runners will hit the lanes and fields around Apperley later this month, raising money for local charities. Many good causes have benefitted from the efforts of athletes in the Apperley Quarter Marathon since it began in the early 1980s. This year it will be SARA and ACC who reap the benefits of the runners’ efforts. It’s a multi-track race, road and cross country route, which passes through the churchyard of anglo-saxon Deerhust Church; a total of 6.55 miles. Fancy dress is encouraged (with a car-

toony theme this year) and there is a children’s race (kidathon) over approximately 1km in addition to the main event. The Quarter Marathon starts at 11.00am on Sunday 22nd September,

AMANDA’S WALK FOR PARKINSONS Amanda Thomas has completed a gruelling 25 mile walk across mid-Wales, raising over £2000 for Parkinson’s Disease Charity. Nine years after her husband died of the disease, Amanda was diagnosed with it herself. During the fifteen years her husband lived with Parkinson’s, the couple raised a considerable amount for the charity, including a 192 mile walk in Spain. Last month Amanda set off from Strata Florida Abbey (with friends Annie and Jean) in very wet weather, with penetrating wind and mist over the hills. On the second day the weather improved. “It was just right – warm and dry and the views more than made up for everything else. We got to Abbeycwmhir – another ruined abbey in a beautiful and tranquil spot,” said Amanda. That was some walk. I have to admit that I did not expect to finish it, nor to do it in one day. Apparently, only a few people did manage it all, but I think that we were the only ones to continue the walk into the second day.” You can still donate to by visiting Just Giving’s website and searching for Parkinson’s or Amanda Thomas.

Organ Recitals in Tewkesbury Abbey September brings the last of the season’s lunchtime organ recitals in the magnificent setting of Tewkesbury Abbey. On Tuesday 3rd September, visiting organist is Richard Walker (Assistant at St Chad’s, Shrewsbury) with Piers Maxim of Malvern Prior at the keys on Tuesday 10th September. Accomplished player Nicholas Freestone (Assistant at Worcester Cathedral) is the guest on Tuesday 17th September, and Tewkesbury Abbey’s Carleton Etherington brings the recitals to a close on Tuesday 24th September. The acoustics in Tewkesbury Abbey are perfect for organ music, so it’s no wonder that the series has proved popular throughout the summer. Admission is free, and there is a retiring collection. The music begins at 1.00pm each Tuesday. Also taking place in the Abbey this month is ‘The Choral Pilgrimmage 2019 An Enduring Voice’ - with gems by Sheppard, Tavener, Whitacre and MacMillan presented by world-renowned choir, The Sixteen. Clearway’s dominance of the local domestic and commercial markets has created a vacancy for an additional Sales Consultant. Servicing enquiries from homeowners and developers, the successful candidate will have the benefit of selling Clearway’s impressive range of aluminium and PVCu products with the back up of a reputation built up over 36 years.
We have a vacancy to cover maternity leave from 30th September for twelve months with the possibility of permanent employment afterwards. Our Receptionist is responsible for answering incoming calls and welcoming visitors to our showroom and offices as well as general administration duties.
MATERNITY COVER - 12 MONTHS
Full showroom facilities are available as well as pricing software. There is also the opportunity to train for Commercial Estimating. There is no cold calling or pressure selling. This is an employed permanent position with a competitive salary package, company pension scheme (subject to qualifying period), death in service insurance and mileage allowance. Candidates must be personable and of smart appearance. Ideally experienced in window and door sales with a good knowledge of Building Regulations, however full training will be given to the right person. They must also be numerate and able to demonstrate basic IT skills.
Based in our Showroom Office the successful candidate will work with a small team in a varied and vibrant environment. Hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm equating to a 40 hour week. Rate of pay is £8.50 per hour. Saturday morning work from 9am to 1pm is also available at an overtime rate. We offer 20 days holiday plus recognised Bank Holidays as well as a company pension scheme subject to a qualifying period. There is also Death in Service cover. VINTAGE FAIR – A WET AFFAIR With the weather forecast looking poor, spirits were high. The Severn Vale Vintage Club members donned their wellies and braved the weather regardless to ensure the country fair that had been 12 months in the making continued as scheduled. Despite the challenging conditions, the great British public still supported the event and had a great time. Whilst it wasn’t our biggest turn out, we still pushed forward despite several amusements and stall holders not able to make it due to the challenging conditions. The beer and tea tent were some of the most popular destinations over the weekend to shelter from the conditions, with great entertainment from the Ukulele band and delicious cakes made and sold by The Butterfly Garden. The tractors, vintage vehicles and steam engine with saw bench were welcome sights by many. Whilst the weather meant that the arena wasn’t as busy as we had planned, the excellent commentary by Richard Chatham and Tom Cullimore was detailed and interesting keeping people entertained. The tractor pull was a huge hit, with several entries the competition was high – but the senior males ended up taking

the title despite the junior and women’s team efforts. As the annual vintage show is run by the Severn Vale Vintage Club and its members, we are about to enter our 20th year as a club, so next years event will be bigger and better. Every year we aim to provide a great local source of

OLDBURY ROAD AND NELSON STREET Oldbury Road/Nelson Street has always fascinated me - from the photograph of the parade to understanding how the modern streetscape has evolved during the 26 years I have been involved in Tewkesbury, writes John Dixon. I remember going to a party in House No. 2 (Escott?) in the 1980s but when I came to live in Oldbury Road in 2002 that house and No. 1 (Parsons) had disappeared for the sake of accommodating vehicles. House No. 3 has survived; it was the home of Queenie Tombs but is now Gingers, the ladies’ hairdresser. A was Huntley’s Court (a former alley): John Rogers recalled in 1905 that “Mr. Thomas Huntley for 50 years .. had a baking business; he was a native born in humble circumstances but by his industry and perseverance he became the owner of the two front houses (18-19 Barton Street) and all the property at the back, through to the Oldbury.” Behind No. 1, a line of houses and the Salvation Army ‘Barrack’ were all swept away. No 4 is one of a series of new-builds filling in previous “wasteland”. Perhaps that is the price of progress?

The surveyor making the report can then make recommendations sometimes with photographs to illustrate the issues being highlighted and can also make further specialist recommendations if they are required. OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild Hughes Alley runs between Barton Street and Swilgate Road, one of a number of surviving alleys in that area. It hasn’t survived unscathed, though, because like so many of its neighbours it contained dwellings which were unfit for habitation which were cleared and demolished as Tewkesbury dealt with its housing problems. The Alley was unusual in having houses on both sides and giving access to Myrtle and Peachey’s courts. Altogether, the alley and courts once contained twenty-one dwellings. The alley is named for Joe Hughes, who was a dairyman. He kept cows in a meadow on Perry Hill and sold milk and butter from his shop at
HUGHES’ ALLEY 1884 Map of Hughes Alley the front of the alley. John Rogers, who wrote about the alleys in 1905, described him as a Quaker of the old sort. His meadow contained a large elm tree beneath which both George Whitfield and John Wesley were said to have preached. This is com-
memorated in Lezli Lawrence’s artwork at the entrance to the alley. The Alley Historian himself, John Rogers, opened his ironworking business in the front shop in 1850. He was a remarkable man. Born in Tewkesbury in 1808, he was apprenticed as a
whitesmith and bellhanger then travelled all over England as a journeyman before settling in his home town, where he stayed until his death in 1909, soon after celebrating his centenary. He was responsible for the ironwork around the Crimean gun in
Cheltenham and both the Tewkesbury and Gloucester cemetery gates, His name can be seen much closer to home, though, on a cellar cover in Barton Street. Life in these alleys was generally peaceful and, as John Rogers would say, respectable. People were poor. By far the commonest occupation was labourer, with some people, widows especially, categorised as pauper. The alleys also accommodated a lot of people in boot and shoe making trades, some framework knitters, basket makers, a tanner and even a nailor.
Harry Barker was bound over to keep the peace after an alleged assault on Ethel Bourton, who claimed that he attempted to choke her and then threw a bucket of water over her. The cause of the quarrel was Mrs Bourton’s annoyance with Barker’s son playing in the communal wash-house. Little things get magnified. By 1931, the Council had Hughes Alley in their sights for clearance and in 1935 it proposed demolition orders on four houses. Only one was demolished, though; the others were recommended for ‘reconditioning’. One was amalga-
Hughes Alley Sudden death was much more prevalent than today. Charles Smith, a habitual drunkard, fell down William Hemming’s stairs and broke his neck. Fanny Hawkins, three years old, was engulfed in flames when her clothes caught fire and died at home several days later, Agnes Heath drowned in the Swilgate whilst in a state of deep depression. Charles Cole, 28, father of four children, was suffocated when the sides of a trench he was digging collapsed. The Great War also brought a great deal of news of death, of husbands, sons and brothers. There were occasional serial miscreants. In 1885, Alfred Newman, basket maker, was convicted of being drunk and disorderly for the nineteenth time. He was apprehended whilst threatening to murder his wife. This was an exception, though, in a generally well-behaved alley. Hughes Alley suffered the problems of other alleys, of overcrowding and poor sanitation. In 1899, owners agreed to a piped water supply, and in 1902 five cottages were advertised for sale ‘with town water laid on’. There were none of the well contamination problems experienced by other alleys, though. Occasionally, the tensions of living cheek by jowl led to explosions of anger, as in 1931, when 32 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT
mated with the neighbouring house in Swilgate road. Despite efforts, no solution was found for the other two, which were demolished in 1938. The houses in Myrtle Court, with their little front gardens, disappeared and in 1968 Peachey Court and all the adjacent property in Hughes Alley was replaced by the very discordant National Westminster Bank building, which has now closed and is being converted to offices and housing, retaining the security fencing and concrete yard, unfortunately,

The alley today can best be described as needing improvement. The paving is concrete bricks, with patches of tarmac. Only two houses remain, the rest have been replaced by walls and fences. A redevelopment at the Swilgate Road end, where once there was a hessian bagmaking workshop, stopped in 2007 and has become an eyesore embroiled in flood regulation problems. The Alley remains, though, and in time maybe some of the lost ‘character’ will be restored.

Ingredients: 2 slices of corned beef (or ham or other meat) 2 eggs • Pepper and salt • I tablespoonful milk Break the eggs into a basin with the milk and pepper and salt, beat up well together, then chop the meat very fine. Put into the basin, and also beat well. Put into a frying pan with some margarine or dripping, stirring all the time until it begins to set, Then bring it to one side of the pan and let it brown. STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
GORDON-SMITH GS2 “British Gibsons” and “Gibson Busters” are just two of the phrases that have been used to describe the hand-crafted guitars that have been produced by a very special English manufacturer since the 70’s writes Paul Thomas. Established in 1974, by Gordon Whitham and John Smith, and originally sited in Partington, South Manchester, the Gordon-Smith brand can lay claim to being the UK’s longest-established guitar makers. Early models came with one pick-up (GS1) or two pickups (GS2) and were available in single or double-cut models. These guitars looked (and performed) like stripped-back, no-nonsense Gibsons; and in a sense that’s what they were. Big, heavy slabs of good quality timber, top quality hardware and outstanding pick-ups. Initially, the manufacturing process was slow – it takes time to create quality, hand-built instruments, especially in a small workshop with a tiny workforce. And especially when pick-ups are hand wound on site! However, as guitars eventually began to trickle out into shops, especially in the North West, the first stirrings of the movement that was to become punk were beginning to…stir. It perhaps comes as no surprise, then, that one of the first to utilise a Gordon-Smith guitar in public was Pete Shelley; leader of Manchester’s finest – Buzzcocks. Other punks to cotton on to the quality, reliability and cost effectiveness of Gordon-Smiths included Nicky Garratt of UK Subs fame and, over time, more and more bands began to use the guitars. These included; The Sisters of Mercy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Stone Roses and Manic Street Preachers. The GS2 currently available at Strummers is a wonderful, battle-scarred instrument, hailing from 1993. A huge chunk of stained poplar with a set neck and rosewood fingerboard. It features hand-wound, coil-tapped pick-ups, custom bridge and a brass nut. The sum of these parts is a confident and powerful instrument with a fantastic tone. Test drives are highly recommended! To get an idea of just how small an operation GordonSmith was (and to see just how hand-made their guitars really were), I would recommend a viewing of “Gordon Smith Guitars – A Short Documentary” which can be easily found on YouTube. In the film you will meet John Smith, his wife Linda and their set-up guy, Chris. And you will understand what a real ‘custom shop’ is! Although taken over by Auden Guitars in 2015 and relocated to Northampton, the name Gordon Smith still features on the headstocks of a wide range of instruments of the highest quality. Since then, the range and quantity of guitars available has increased but, for me, it’s hard to beat the mojo of the earlier Mancunian masterpieces. Paul Thomas. The end of season showtime September sees many local horticultural and agricultural events, the highlight of which is Moreton-in-Marsh Show, writes Jack B. Walker. As featured in last month’s Tewkesbury Direct, Moreton Show is one of the largest and important one day shows of its kind in the UK. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 7th September, and will attract 1000s of visitors from all over the country. A fine celebration of country life, there are equestrian events, terrier racing, livestock and produce shows held on a 165 acre site at the edge of the town. For more details visit the website www.moretonshow.co.uk On a smaller scale, Broadway Horticulture and Craft Show takes place on the village green on Saturday 14th September. There will be displays of locally grown fruit, flowers, vegetables, plants, jams and preserved and baked goods. There will be live music too. The fun starts at 1pm and ends around 4.30pm. The following day (Sunday 15th) brings a food festival in the same location and will include cookery demonstrations by local chefs, as well as artisan food and drink.

A Busy Time for Local Probus Club Members of Longdon District Probus Club have not been at a loose end by any means. On the 17th July Club members and guests visited the Envirosort recycling centre, at Norton near Worcester. This centre handles the clean recyclables put out for kerbside collection by households across Worcestershire and Herefordshire. These recyclables are primarily cans, glass and plastic bottles, paper and light card. After separation, the materials are then supplied to other companies to be either processed further or turned into new products. The Probus group, some of whom are shown in the photograph, were given an excellent presentation
by a member of the Envirosort staff and were then permitted to view (from a suitable and safe vantage point) the operation of the facility.
On the 25th July the Club had its annual lunch at the Railway Inn, Defford. The expectation of the usual excellent buffet-style meal meant that the occasion was well attended. The landlord, Guido (who has been at the helm for 30 years or more) was ably assisted by his charming and efficient staff. On the 5th August the Club welcomed a new member – Chris Chapman. Chris is well
known locally, particularly through his work with Tewkesbury VIPs (a monthly social club for the visually impaired). The photograph shows Chris being formally welcomed to the Club by Vice Chairman Nigel Thompson. Longdon District Probus Club attracts members from a wide area including Tewkesbury, Redmarley, Corse Lawn, Uptonupon-Severn, Twyning, Bushley, Bredon,
Hartpury and Pendock. It meets on most Monday mornings at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury (together with social events and occasional trips out, such as the ones above) and talks on a variety of topics are planned to take place throughout the year. The Cotswold Male Voice Choir is celebrating its 70th anniversary This year The Cotswold Male Voice Choir is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The choir, which began in Bishop’s Cleeve at S. Smiths and Sons Ltd in 1949, is now based in Cheltenham, with rehearsals at Dean Close School, but it has never lost its links with Smiths – now GE Aviation – and Tewkesbury. Back in 1949 a Welshman called Dave Williams got his colleagues together at Smiths and Sons to do some singing. In those days they were rehearsing in the works canteen, but they quickly became a renowned choir throughout Gloucestershire. It was not until 1977 that the choir changed its name from Smiths Male Voice Choir to The Cotswold Male Voice Choir because they had attracted members from all over Tewkesbury and even further afield. Even so there were always members of the choir who worked in Smiths and today there are still several employees of GE Aviation singing in the choir. In 2014 GE Aviation celebrated 65 years at the Bishops Cleeve site with a staff party at The Centaur – and the choir were invited too! Then in 2015 the choir joined with GE Aviation to raise funds for Help For Heroes by hosting a special concert at Cheltenham Town Hall. A challenge was issued to the workforce to form a new choir and
sing at the concert. The project was called “Zero to Pavarotti in 3 months”. Under the tutelage of the Music Director of the Cotswold choir, Charmaine Worrall, a 25 strong choir once again rehearsed in the site canteen at lunchtimes before finally stepping up onto the Town Hall stage to perform in front of a packed audience. “It was nerve wracking – but a wonderful experience” said one new chorister. Earlier this year the Cotswold Male Voice choir returned to its origins to actually sing on the GE Aviation site during an employee “Hobbies” day - part of the company’s initiative to offset the stresses of the modern workplace. “Mental health” and “well-being” are topics that have hit the media headlines repeatedly over the last few years but “The Cotswolds” have been putting today’s medical advice into practice for 70 years. Singing “works” both for choir members and for an audience. Today’s workplaces are often extremely
stressful; the choir has many members who find that coming to a choir rehearsal gives them respite from those stresses and an outlet for their emotions in singing. It also has many older choir members for whom
membership has given them renewed purpose, enjoyment and friendship. On Saturday, October 5th, the choir will be hosting a special concert to celebrate its 70th year. It will be held at St. Mathew’s Church, 44

Summer Fun at Mitton Green Some 40+ residents of the North end of Mitton held their summer picnic on their green on Sunday 4th August. The weather was perfect and while the children played croquet, swing-ball and tug-of-war, the adults chatted and prepared the picnic spread. The green has been used regularly for such events over several decades, and to preserve this for the future, an application to have it formally recognised as a village green is currently under consideration by Gloucestershire County Council.

ROSS IS FLYING HIGH AFTER OVER 5ST WEIGHT LOSS! Local man, Ross Hebden had struggled with his weight since childhood and his unhealthy eating habits continued when he met his wife Amanda, as they settled into a routine of enjoying indulgent meals and cosy takeaways together. Because of his size, Ross spent an uncomfortable flight to Turkey because he was too embarrassed to ask for a seatbelt extender, a cruel email at work knocked his confidence and finally for the Dad of three when he saw the family photo taken when they got their new car, he knew he had to do something about his weight.

ive, I discovered a whole new way of eating, and realised with a few tweaks I could still enjoy some of my old favourites.” Ross, who was named Slimming World’s Mr Sleek 2019, now enjoys going to the gym, running, he has completed several half marathons and playing American Football. Ross said “For me everything I have done has been for my family, to support my wife on her weight loss journey and be the best possible father to my kids, I was once too tired or out of breath to play with them, now I have the energy to keep up with them and I couldn’t be happier.” he also added “I recently understood how far I had come when I had to get on a plane again and I had plenty of room, I feel like a totally different per-

TALKING OF TEWKESBURY by Amanda Orton I had a great time at the recent Classic Vehicle Festival at Tewkesbury School, organised by the local Rotary Club, writes Amanda Orton. It led me to wondering what else the Rotary Club do and what it’s all about, so I met with Ron Hesketh and Andrew Turner, to find out more. I’d always thought it was a group for retired businessmen, but that myth was soon dispelled. They’re not all men and not all “seniors”! It started about 100 years ago as a group for businessmen, but until recently, the youngest Rotarian in Tewkesbury was a 24 year old woman. As Andrew explained, Rotarians pride themselves on having a diverse membership: men and women, young and senior, from different walks of life, nationalities and faiths all serving together and with common values. For anyone wanting to have fun meeting new people and also become actively involved in the local community, Rotary Club would seem the ideal way to do it. The Classic Vehicle Festival in August is the biggest fund raising

event in the Tewkesbury Rotarians calendar, with a generous donation given to The Midlands Air Ambulance each year. The Festival has grown in size and popularity in the 10 years that Rotary Club has been organising it and there is certainly plenty for everyone to see and do on their visit. Anyone who has enjoyed the Bonfire and Fireworks display in November on the Vineyards, has The Rotary Club to thank for a wonderful evening there too. This is truly a community event, open to absolutely everyone, with no admission charge. The crowds that attend this event are tes-
tament to it’s continuing success and the stunning firework display is second to none. Another big event in the Rotary year is the Charity Concert with the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra which takes place in March each year. There is also a National Music Competition with three musicians from the Tewkesbury area going forward to participate on a national level. Other competitions organised by the Rotarians are those for young writers and photographers. Rotarians also help youngsters in many other ways – by funding books and other equipment for schools, both primary and secondary.
Organising mock interviews at schools, which are invaluable experience on the steps to employment. Achievement awards are funded, including the Rotary Young Leaders Award, which takes place each summer at a centre in the Forest of Dean. Youngsters taking part in this are asked to come back and tell the group of their experience at the centre. For older members of the local community, there is a Senior Citizens Party in February and regular race nights at both Marina Court and Tewkesbury Fields Nursing Home. On an International level, Rotarian projects include:Aqua Boxes – to provide clean drinking water in disaster areas Shelter Boxes – providing larger items for world disasters Work Aid – collecting old tools which are sent to Rotary contacts in Africa Crocus Bulb planting to end Polio worldwide So, if you want to get out, make new friends and put something back into the community, maybe Rotary is the

The Knitted Monks of Tewkesbury Abbey will be returning to the Abbey from their winter retreat between 14th and 21st September. The monks have been knitted as part of the 20.21 project which will celebrate the 900th anniversary of the consecration of the Abbey in 2021. Knitters from as far away as New Zealand and Canada as well as many in the UK have knitted and sent their creations to the Abbey. Just a small proportion of the 1,000 so far received will be on show in September, more of them will be displayed in January and February 2020. Other festivals in the UK were cancelled or prepared for disruption, and as a result, extra tickets were taken up at Lakefest by people who were not going to miss out on their great Summer festival tradition. Headliners Kaiser Chiefs set the bar high on the friday night, followed by the Happy Mondays with James ending the event on an emotive high. A spokesman for the event said, “It was awesome, clearly Lakefest is now a major festival in the country, the audience just got the vibe and

Probus Club visits the BBC In August, Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club organised one of our regular coach trips, this time to the BBC studios at the Mailbox in the centre of Birmingham. We were welcomed by our guides, Sue and Gary and as the tour progressed it was clear that not only were they extremely knowledgeable about the BBC in Birmingham, but they both really enjoyed their jobs. The first location we visited was the studio which most of us see every day from where Midlands Today is broadcast. Curiously the studio seemed a lot smaller than it appears on television, apparently due to the use of wideangle lenses on the cameras. Sue and Gary explained everything in the studio about the cameras, the autocues and the lighting and some fascinating and little-known details, such as the fact that presenters wear their own clothes on screen and apply their own makeup. No special wardrobe

Forgive and forget. Do you? Honestly? How good are you at following the old mantra “forgive and forget,” I wonder, writes David Slater. If I was to mention a name to you, a name of which you were aware, what would come into your mind? ~ Yes, I remember B. Miserable old devil ! ~ or ~ Yes. I remember B. Always spoke and asked how things were going ! ~ Are you a person who more easily remembers the positive or the negative? Just think about it before you give yourself an HONEST answer. Two friends were walking together through a desert in Africa. They had known each other for years and usually enjoyed each other's company. On this
one particular day they had a blazing row and the one slapped the other across the face to try and shut him up. The one who was slapped was hurt quite considerably but he didn't say anything. The slap had been so hard that it had swept him off his feet and he found himself lying in the sand. He forced himself into a sitting position and then wrote in the sand “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE AND

HURT ME !” The other guy noticed this but didn't say anything. They just kept walking on but now with very few words passing between them. Hours passed and they found themselves approaching a beautiful oasis. They were hot and dirty and both decided to take a refreshing bath in the cool pool. The one who had been slapped was not the best of swimmers and he got himself stuck in what was almost like quicksand. He panicked and splashed about but all that did was make things more difficult. He was in real danger of drowning. His friend heard the panicky cries and saw his friend was in real trouble so went over and pulled him out of the water so rescuing him from nearly drowning. When the saved man got his breath back he picked up a stone and on a flat rock that was on the edge of the pool wrote “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE”. The friend who had slapped his best friend asked the other “ After I hurt you, you wrote that
message in the sand. Now, since I saved you from drowning, you write on stone. I don't get it! Why have you done that?” “It's quite simple when you come to think of it,” said the one friend in reply. “When someone hurts us with words or actions, we should write it in sand because the winds of forgiveness and the waves of healing can wipe it away. Out of sight out of mind, you could say. Forgive and forget. “But when someone does something that is good for us we want and need to remember it so it is then that we engrave the message in stone. The wind can blow as much as it likes but it will not remove what has been written. Just think of all those messages engraved into the walls of the temples of Ancient Egypt. We can still see them thousands of years later. So the moral behind this story is ~ Write your hurts in the sand and forget them. BUT Engrave your benefits in stone so that they can be better remembered.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
IN VICTORIAN FOOTSTEPS: HIGH ON THE MALVERN HILLS A leisure destination since Victorian times, the Malvern Hills are often overlooked by ramblers and dismissed as rather genteel, writes Jack B. Walker. As the highest point for miles around, the views from the tops are quite spectacular - and the proximity of the delightful town of Malvern itself makes this one of my favourite places to visit year round. Some of the ascents can be quite taxing too! The route - which is suitable for all weather walking - starts in St Ann’s Road - a lane which strikes up into the hills from Bellevue Terrace in Great Malvern Town Centre. You can park your car in any of the nearby car parks. Go up St Ann’s Road (next to the Unicorn Inn) - 1) and when this road turns left, keep straight ahead into Happy Valley (2). The ascent becomes steeper, and eventually turns back down
towards St Ann’s Well. At this point (3) go straight ahead on to a track which climbs upwards through Green Valley. Eventually you will meet the laid-out ride called the Lady Howard De Walden Drive. Bear right on to this track (4). The path encircles the last of the high hills of the Malvern chain North Hill. Its hard surface was laid out in Victorian times when visitors flocked to the
town to take the waters. The long distance Worcestershire Way now goes along this route. There are some fine views from here - looking north and, as the path strikes around the head of the hill, over the rolling Herefordshire countryside.

Follow the path all the way around the hill, and at the fork (5) keep on the left path to eventually return to a point above Green Valley. Instead of retracing your steps at this point, bear right and carry along the track until you reach cross tracks (6). Take the left path to descend. Keep on the main track until you re-join the Happy Valley Lane. Bear right to reach St Ann’s Well (7). A popular café with outside seating area, St Ann’s Well was built in 1813 and houses an elaborately carved marble drinking fountain. Carry on down the lane which eventually meets St Ann’s Road. Turn left (8) and return to the town centre.
