Tewkesbury School students received their A Level and GCSE results in August after a long and anxious wait and against a background of national uncertainty over results and standards. On both days, there were many delighted young people and their parents at the school receiving the news of their achievements. As ever, there were a significant number of students achieving the very highest grades.

Open day attracts more than 900 visitors for a tour of new Tewkesbury Community Hospital More than 900 people arrived to visit Tewkesbury’s new £10 million community hospital this week when Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust held an open day for the local community. time being, we will continue to run our outpatient clinics from the present hospital site, and we will be working

Visitors were also asked to suggest names for the new patient rooms. Visitors were able to talk to the Trust’s health promotion team, have a chat with occupational therapists and try out aids and specialist equipment, and find out

more about the Expert Patient Programme, which supports people with long term conditions to learn self-manskills to agement improve the quality of their lives. The League of Friends, which has contributed £330,000 to the hospital for specialist equipment, including xfacilities and ray bariatric beds, and other extras such as television screens, held a display stand in the foyer and welcomed visitors to the hospital. Susan Field director of adult services said: “The community day was all about opening the doors of the hospital to the local community, as the new hospital will be at the heart of Tewkesbury. It was fantastic to see so many people turn up to look around, and we had lots of great ideas for naming the patient rooms too! “We had hoped to be moving the first patients in over this weekend, but the final commissioning checks have highlighted a number of technical issues which need to be resolved before Gloucestershire Care Services can formally take over the new Tewkesbury Community Hospital building. “It means we are going to have delay moving for the final works to be completed to our satisfaction. This is so that we can provide assurance to patients, staff and visitors that our new facilities meet the highest standards in terms of quality and safety. “At this stage, we do not have a completion date, but we will make sure that the information is well-publicised as soon as we know the detail. “It means that, for the

A normally quiet stretch of the River Avon just below Twyning was the scene of great activity this Summer when Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service took part in "Exercise Broker." This was a surprise exercise cleverly devised by Head of Seamanship Tim Huckvale from Northway. He mocked up a fire in an inflatable dinghy and Rob Carr took the part of the victim who had supposedly suffered a seriously burnt arm and was last sighted wandering in a North Easterly direction across the fields away from the dinghy.
Tim Huckvale said "A total of six boats took part and unit members had to find the damaged dinghy, form themselves into a land search team, go ashore by dinghies to find the casualty, deal with the injury and somehow get him aboard a rescue boat before themselves returning to boats waiting for them in the middle of the river.� Head of Unit Nic Price said "This was an extensive exercise which incorporated many of the aspects of training the members had been doing during the past few months." He added: "This was the first time the Unit had devised an exercise ourselves having taken part previously in larger exercises at Avonmouth Docks and with the Fire and Police Services in various local Counties. It was extremely successful and tested members' skills in Boat Handling, VHF, First Aid and Map Reading."

Abbey’s light work As reported in previous editions of Tewkesbury Direct, the fundraising appeal to re-light the interior of Tewkesbury Abbey has so far realised a magnificent £680,000. This has enabled the first stage to be completed, and the second phase to get underway. The total needed for the project is, however, £850,000. SUPPORT FOR LOCAL THANKS TO TEWKESBURY BOROUGH MAYOR’S FUNDRAISING More than £9000 has been raised for two charities thanks to fundraising by last year’s Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough Cllr Phil Surman. Cllr Surman was invested as the borough’s mayor in 2012 and dedicated his fundraising to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and Help for Heroes charities. Thanks to a range of fundraising events, including a dress down day for staff at the Council Offices, a Jubilee Ball and The Mayor’s Ball, the mayor raised a total of £9,115.85. Cllr Philip Surman said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my busy year as mayor and I would like to say thank you to everyone who donated to my two chosen charities – it is clear that people have been very generous, which will be greatly appreciated by both Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and Help for Heroes. RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND FOR LOCAL FESTIVAL Celebrating its second annual music and water sports festival, Lakefest did not disappoint. With an array of fun and games for children, top quality acts and headliners; Lakefest - held at Croft farm, Bredon’s Hardwick - boasted its biggest and most successful year yet. Over 3,500 people joined in the weekend’s activities at Croft Farm near Waterpark Tewkesbury, with the majority of Lakefesters camping or glamping for the whole weekend. Lee Martin, Director of Lakefest, comments; “We are thrilled with the outcome of this year’s festival; the bands, supporters, workers and visitors all joined together to create a really special atmosphere and made it a fantastic weekend for all. “We are really looking forward to next year’s festival already, and with all the amazing feedback we received, we are sure that next year will be even bigger and better”. Highlights from the festival included a headline performance by 90’s Britpop band Ocean Colour Scene, who had
the crowd joining in with their classic hit The Day We Caught The Train; Levellers smashed an hour and a half set on the Saturday night; and Chas & Dave performed an unbelievable finale as the closing act on Sunday, followed by
Lakefest’s spectacular fireworks display to mark the end to an incredible weekend. Lakefest also granted three wishes in aid of Winston’s Wish over the weekend and raised a total of £460 through this; the first wish granted was for Tanya Nash, with her son and three friends Aqua Zorbing on the lake, the second to James and Ethan Broad who met Levellers back
stage and the third went to Janet and Simon Shippen who had a special meet and greet with Chas & Dave. A fun filled weekend was enjoyed by all, with people already expressing their desire to return next year, comments include; ‘wonderful festival, with great organisation and lovely atmosphere for all ages’, ‘an all heart festival where everyone became friends’ and ‘one of the greatest weekends you will experience – plenty of activities, great bands and a beautiful lake to relax by as the sun goes down. This national event celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.

Rector Retirement After seventeen years of service to the Parish of Ashchurch, Northway; Newtown; Hamlets from Aston-on-Carrant to Fiddington, Rosanne Roberts, the Rector of St Nicholas Church, Ashchurch has announced her retirement. Rosanne officially retires at the end of October 2013, however the last service she will officiate at will be Sunday 6th October. During the time before a new Rector is appointed the churchwardens are legally in charge of the parish acting on behalf of the Bishop. It is planned that a recently retired clergy will support and conduct services during this time. An Autumn Vintage Treat The Severn Vale Vintage Club will be holding their annual open weekend at Manor Farm, Stoke Orchard the weekend 14th and 15th September. There will be vintage tractors, steam and stationary engines, classic cars and motorbikes. FARMING, A COMPETITIVE BUSINESS The Gloucestershire Root, Fruit and Grain Society are holding their Tillage Event at Ashchurch on Tuesday 10th September. This agricultural society had an exciting start when, in 1896, two local farmers came to blows in Gloucester Market, each claiming to grow better crops than the other. A peacemaker suggested that specimens be brought to Gloucester where independent judges would pronounce. The event attracted crowds of interested farmers and from it the society was born. Established by husband and wife Lee and Nicki Halford in 2007, the business has thrived even in the worst recession for decades. Lee attributes their success to providing consistent quality meats sourced as locally as possible and reared in the best farming conditions. Good customer service is also something that the Halfords Team prides themselves on. A favourite with customers is the beef farmed at Brockeridge Farm at nearby Twyning. Lamb, poultry, woodland and Gloucester Old Spot Pork is also drawn from local suppliers. For something more seasonal, game will soon be available including venison, rabbit, pheasant, partridge, pigeon and wild duck. The shop is home to Halfords’ own very popular Tewkesbury Banger, as well as an extensive range of home made items. Chris Bayliss has fond memories of fishing just in front, where warm water was expelled by the Mill, which proved attractive to fish! Since then expanded, Healings excluding fishermen, walkers and swimmers when the bridge over the Mill Avon was con-
structed in the 80s. In the foreground is a most elegant boat – is it a submarine chaser, a mine sweeper or a MTB?- please put me out of my ignorance! The slipway was for Robinson’s Boatyard, which had taken over Bathursts. In its turn, the factory has been replaced by the houses of King John’s Court leaving an almost redundant slipway. My logic suggests that this would have been the ideal location for the rescue services, tomorrow especially when the Mill will have metamorphosed into a residential development - with cars competing with rescue vehicles to cross the narrow bridge onto the quayside. On Sunday 11th August diners who took up the challenge gathers at Uncle Sam’s, in Tewkesbury High Street, to see who could eat either a monster fish and chip or giant burger meal. Optimistic contestants received a reality check after tucking in for ten minutes, when the size of the task became as large as the portions. The competition was won by Paul Frampton (burger meal) and Steve Barnes (fish and chips). Everyone had a good
time - except the contestants - and the winners were presented with Uncle Sam’s Challenge T-shirts and a free dinner. For coeliacs and other wheat allergy sufferers, there’s good news from Marios and his team at Uncle Sam’s. HOWZATT FOR A FUNDRAISER? Twyning Green enjoyed a wonderful crowd from the community and beyond on a brilliant sunny Saturday last month, gathered with the sole purpose of having fun and raising some cash for some very deserving causes. Twelve teams turned out in all manners of garb to battle it out for the Annual Charity (one day) Cricket Tournament, which all started in memory of May Spurway (former landlady of the Village Inn) and Colin Harber (former landlord of the Fleet Inn) who both fell victim to Cancer. Four groups ploughed through a knockout round to produce semi-finals and a thrilling final. The fun element was assured as all teams had to field mixed gender and a youngster and, as in previous years, all manner of fancy dress was encouraged. Player of the tournament went to young Sam Freeguard, Dougies Cottage Kennels took the trophy with The Master Batters as runner-up. The event carried on into the evening at the Village Inn with a Pig Roast provided by Halfords’ butchers, along with a small auction which raised £280. A great deal of effort was put in by a whole host of people to ensure a very successful weekend which culminated in funds of approx. £2,300 being raised for Sue Ryder, CLIC and Cancer Research.

The route is an outand-back course run on picturesque, quiet country lanes, past the hamlet of Great Washbourne where it turns just before the A46 at Beckford. T he course is flat with some undulations, ideal for the occasional jogger or the more serious runner looking to clock a good 5k time. In 2012 times ranged from 18.20 to over 40 minutes. The family friendly event will loads of kids activities, games, stalls and refreshments available before, during and after the run. AROUND DUMBLETON HILL Like its near neighbour Bredon, Dumbleton Hill is an outlier of the Cotswolds, writes Jack B. Walker. This particular route offers some lovely views of the surrounding vales and beyond - and although there is a steep ascent - which can be muddy at times - it is well worth the effort. Park at the side of the road near the church. Walk along the main street, passing the tea
shop and gallery, and take the first turning on the left, Dairy Lane (1). Walk to the end of the

lane towards the cricket club, and look for a stile in a metal fence on the right (2). Cross the stile and follow the direction arrows across a small field, through a gate and up a hillside towards some woods. Go through the gate (3) and follow the path through the trees. On your left you can see an overgrown ice house, which dates back to the days when Dumbleton Hall was a fashionable private residence. It was acquired by the Post Office and used as a holiday hotel for employees for many years. It is now an upmarket hotel and popular wedding venue. Follow the path as it exits the wood and skirts the edge of it. There are good views to your right of Bredon Hill and the Vale of Evesham beyond. There are often cattle in the fields - and I have, in the past, encountered a bull here. Pass with caution! Eventually you will meet a bridleway coming up from Didcot Farm (4). Turn left and follow the track as it climbs towards the edge of a wood. Go through the gate (5) and follow the obvious path as it climbs steeply to the top of the hill. Parts of the bridleway here can become slippery and muddy after rain, particularly in winter months. As you reach the top of the hill the path levels
out and there are good views to the Cotswolds. Go through the farm gate (6) on to a track on your left which leads to Hill Farm across the fields at the summit. Go through the gate to the right of the farm (7) and descend on the tarmac road through Dumbleton Park. The Hall may be seen on your left - and you might see the fountain in the ornamental pond too. At the bottom of the park, pass between some cottages (8), and take the lane ahead back to the church

DEAN SET TO GET HIS KICKS ON ROUTE 66 Immortalised by the Rolling Stones and revisited on TV recently by Billy Connolly riding a motorised tricycle, Route 66 is an American icon. In a couple of weeks it will be made famous all over again by a group of intrepid cyclists from the UK who will attempt to ride all 2,616 miles of it to raise funds for a children’s hospice. Tewkesbury’s own Dean Hodges is one of the 15 riders taking part in the challenge, which has been dubbed ‘Hope 66’. from Desiree Drive, Dean, Tewkesbury, and Managing Director of software company Business Micros Aluminium based on Tewkesbury Business Park, has been training hard for the challenge which will see him pedal a minimum of 80 miles a day for 14 days. Dean says: “I hadn’t done any serious cycling before this so it is going to be a huge challenge, but after more than a year of training around the roads of Gloucestershire even in the dark and the rain doing 150-200 miles each week, I’m fairly confident that I’m ready for what’s in store. “Obviously, Tewkesbury doesn’t prepare you for riding across the desert in 40º heat or climbing to altitudes of 8,000 feet but I’ve definitely put in the hours necessary and now I’m hoping that as many people as possible will sponsor me and help to raise as much money as we can for our charity.
“I visited the hospice recently and saw what an amazing difference it makes to the lives of the children and their families, so I know I won’t give up no matter how tough it gets.” Dean, 44, is part of the GM Fundraising Group (www.gmfundraising.co.uk) which is aiming to reach a target of raising £1m for the Hope House Children’s Hospice in Oswestry. Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle show’s organisers It is estimated that more than 500 classic cars attended Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Show, with an ever growing number of motorcycles as well. 100+ trade stands and market stalls surrounding the show arena at Tewkesbury School added a ‘village atmosfete/carnival phere’ to the day. The festival is really the only event of the year when Tewkesbury Rotary Club can raise money for charity, so enabling us to fund worthy causes, both nationally and internationally throughout the year,
which brings me to my team of tireless volunteers, without whose continuous help and input, the event wouldn’t have been possible. I want to say a big thank you to Tewkesbury School for allowing us to use the playing field, especially to the Sports centre manager, Paul Baker for his continuing support and to the grounds man ‘Stu’, for his help in preparing the site and marking out the trade areas for us. All of the above added up to a brilliantly successful day, with some wonderful car and bike entries. The highlight of the day was the re-uniting of a 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom 2 with the son of the original owner. Mr Gustav Miesegaes Flew in from Switzerland as a guest of Dick De Leeuw, one of our Rotarians and until Sunday, had not sat in the car for more than 60 years. The Phantom is now owned by Roger Head of Highnam Court and has been restored to concours condition. I walked round the

WILDLIFE IN A TANGLE Each year during the spring and summer months, we deal with an increased number of casualties being admitted due to entanglements of various kinds, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. There have been a couple of grass snakes caught in netting put over garden ponds to protect the fish. This is a fairly common call for us – grass snakes spend a lot of time in water as their diet includes frogs and small fish and garden ponds often offer an easy meal. Barbed wire fences horrendous inflict injuries to wild mammals and birds, often causing irreparable damage when the only course of action we have is euthanasia. At the moment we are treating a tawny owl and a buzzard that were both caught in barbed wire fences and sadly, despite our best efforts, the prognosis is not good for either of them because of the extensive damage to soft tissue, muscle and tendons that the wire causes. Hedgehogs seem to have a knack of getting themselves caught up in netting of all sorts such as sports nets and garden netting. Being spiny mammals, once they get stuck their spines often prevent them from getting free from the net. Any type of netting needs to be raised off the ground by at least six inches. We were recently called to a fully grown fallow deer stag with his antlers totally tangled in electric fencing. In his desperate attempts to get free he had also wrapped the fence round a tree as well, had broken his antlers and was stuck fast, unable to move at all. Because his antlers were in velvet (still growing with a covering of skin), the injuries were quite nasty, we ideally would have admitted him to the hospital and given him several days of treatment. Adult deer do not do well in a captive situation and the stress caused can often kill them, so after weighing up the options it was decided that it would be best for the deer to remove the fencing, treat his wounds with an antibiotic spray and release him straight
hooked lure (pictured) embedded in her neck. After a boat ride to the spot where she had been seen and some pretty nifty manoeuvring of the 75ft narrow boat, we eventually caught her. She was rushed back to Vale where the hook was carefully removed, she was given a longacting antibiotic and was released back onto the river the next day. We have recently had to deal with several swans on local rivers after becoming hooked by fishing tackle.
