FAMOUS BLAZER FOUND IN TIME FOR RE-UNION A blazer and scarf worn by a former county grammar school's most famous old boy has come to light - in time to make a 'guest appearance' at an annual reunion dinner. In red and blue striped design and with a label saying 'Thos Plant and Co Ltd, Cheltenham' the blazer number 30717 dated 8.5.39 was owned by Antarctic explorer Sir Raymond Priestley, who was born in 1886 and educated at Tewkesbury Grammar School. Old boys from the school - (members of the Old Theocsbrians Society), - will have their annual get-together this year at Gupshill Manor on Saturday 24th September, when the blazer and scarf will take pride of place in a display of school memorabilia. Society committee member Steve Yates was given the items about ten years ago, and they were stored at his parents’ home until earlier this year, when they were handed to former society secretary Norman Hunt. “Norman brought

when they were stranded in the freezing wilderness of Antarctica when the expedition ship failed to collect them. They survived the long winter in an ice dug-out with only penguin and seal meat to keep them going. They kept up their spirits by singing hymns - with Sir Raymond grateful for those he had learnt at Tewkesbury Methodist Church. Their return home in May 1913 was greeted by a thanksgiving peal of bells at Tewkesbury Abbey. The story of Sir Raymond’s ordeal remained been largely untold because it was overshadowed by the failed expedition and the deaths of Scott and his crew. Ripple teenager sings amongst the stars Ripple’s young singing sensation Tazmin Barnes found herself on the same stage as some internationally renowned artists when she performed at Livestock Festival in Longdon a few weeks ago. At just fourteen years old, she was certainly one of the youngest at the festival - which starred Jason Donovan, Chesney Hawkes, The Fratellis and Reef. But Tazmin is no stranger to singing success: last year she was runner-up in the National Final of the Teenstar UK contest, in the Pre-Teens category.

Tazmin grew up in China, returning to the UK in 2014 to attend the Royal Grammar School in Worcester. Since her success at Teenstar has been performing regularly at festivals and other musical events throughout the Midlands. Tazmin lives with her family at Ripple, just north of Tewkesbury.

as an officer in the Royal Engineers and won the Military Cross in 1918. He died in 1974, aged 87. Tewkesbury Grammar School moved into purposebuilt red brick premises opposite the Abbey in 1906, and by 1952 had grown to accommodate 150 pupils - three times the number originally planned. The school then transferred to a rural setting at Southwick Park on the south side of the town, and closed with the introduction of comprehensive education in 1972. A sledge from the ill-fated expedition was brought back by Sir Raymond, and is now on view at the current Tewkesbury School in Ashchurch Road.

ALL SET FOR ANNUAL MOP Everything is set for one of the biggest events on the Tewkesbury Calendar, the annual Mop Fair. The fair dates back over 400 years to a time when agricultural workers looking for employment would gather at mop (or hiring) fairs. Tewkesbury Mop is now the largest street fair in the county, and each year it attracts thousands of people of all ages to its bright lights in the town centre. There are rides, sideshows, stalls and other amusements in Spring Gardens and throughout the town: central streets are closed to traffic during the

event. This year’s fair dates are Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October, opening at 6pm on the Friday night. Tewkesbury Fair Society was founded in 1989 and organises a number of events to coincide with the Mop. On Saturday 8th October there will be a Model Show at the Methodist Hall (10am to 4pm) where it will display its collection of fairground models, which are over sixty years old. On Thursday 6th October there will be a

Showman’s Social in the Royal British Legion Club, Church Street, from 7.30pm until late. For further details of the Mop Fair’s history visit www.tewkesburyfairsociety.co.uk. Connie’s wing walk raises over £6,000 In July’s Tewkesbury Direct we featured Tewkesbury daredevil, Connie Cullingford, and revealed details of her plan to participate in a flying stunt to raise money for charity, writes Shelby Powell. Much to the relief of her husband Tony, family and friends, the 80 year old wing walker’s feet are firmly back on the ground after her flying adventure at Staverton airport. Connie has raised around £6,000 for Water Aid following her wing walk. After retiring from teaching in Loughborough, Connie and Tony spent time supporting ‘Voluntary Service Overseas’ and were allo-

DON’T HOLD BACK ON FORGIVING I read recently about a family and the heartbreaking experience it went through,writes David Slater, local counsellor and therapist. It has made me think, It's made me think a lot. I wonder if it does the same for you? It was around ten years before this particular

married couple had a child. A lovely little boy.

They were so thrilled. He was born on a beautiful sunny morning and they felt he made their life complete. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open on the kitchen table. He was late for work so he called to his wife to put the top on the bottle and put it back in the cupboard. She was so busy that she actually forgot and the bottle stayed there. Very tempting for a little boy! The boy saw the bottle and liked the colour of the liquid inside. It looked like his favourite smoothie so he drank the lot. The medicine was very highly toxic and often could be fatal even in small doses. The child

collapsed almost immediately and his panicking mum rushed him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. What could she possibly say to her husband? When the frantic father came to the hospital and saw the little boy, dead, he looked at his wife and spoke just four words. “I Love You Darling”. She hadn't expected this.The Father had thought about this on his way to the hospital from his office. He had decided how best to behave-The child was dead. No changing that. There was no point in finding fault with the mother. And let's face it, if only he had taken time to put the bottle away himself this would not have happened.

No point in attaching blame to his wife or to himself or to the doctors. They had lost their only child. What his wife needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy from the husband so that is what he gave her. Often we spend far too much time asking who is responsible or who is to blame, whether in a relationship, in a job or situation or with the people we know. We tend to react in an instant rather than think before we speak or act. Often we regret what we find ourselves saying or doing. What we really need to do is to show the real warmth in human relationships by giving each other support. Think on this. Shouldn’t forgiving some one we love be the easiest thing in the

world to do? I think that this story reminds us to treasure what we have in life. The story tells us not to build up the pain, anguish and suffering by holding back on forgiveness. Don't you agree that if everyone looked at life with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world ? Get rid of all your envies, jealousies, unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find things are actually not as difficult as you think…!!! We cant change what has happened. That stays in the past. What we can do is concentrate on the present and in doing so begin to build a new future. Give it a try! I know I'm going to. David Slater

The pair left Tewkesbury for London on Tuesday 30th August, where they joined 300 other cyclists for the annual Legion ‘Pedals to Paris’ event. During the four days to Paris the Legion has wreath laying ceremonies at various War Memorials along the route, with the final day culminating at the Arc de Triomphe. Peter will also be parading the Tewkesbury Legion Branch Standard for all the ceremonials. Both Peter and Andrew are Legion Members, as well as being members of the Royal Naval Association. Swans reunited after Pittville Park rescue Last month Vale Wildlife Rescue was called to attend to a member of the swan family whose home is Pittville Park Lake in Cheltenham. Zelda (the mother swan) had been seen by members of the public with a fishing line hanging out of her beak and blood coming from her nostril. With the help of boathouse staff they managed to catch Zelda in the children's boating part of the lake, Mobile Dog Grooming Salon and could see that she had swallowed a fishing hook. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Car Parks are prized possessions in the age of the motorcar - with a fine line to be drawn between being a source of income and being a deterrent to trade, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Finding the space to create new ones is a perpetual headache but in the post-war era, de-industrialised Tewkesbury provided the opportunities from which we benefit today. The splendid photograph (above right) reveals the benefits of clearance to provide the Riverside Walk and we are very grateful to Peter Finnigan and his wife Audrey (then Roberts) who was born at 10 St. Mary’s Lane and whose memory has helped us label these derelict buildings. The chimney to the top left belonged to St Mary’s Chemical Works, an enterprise established by ‘druggist’ William Knight to make chemical fertilizers in the 1860s. The business had failed by 1911 when it was taken over by ironmonger, Humphrey King, for manufacturing ‘up-to-date elevators’ until it was sold in 1935. It then became a wood-working business before demolition. The Boat House survives after demolition to make a fine riverside home – the mystery is how it survived when it should have been cleared to continue the Riverside Walk instead of creating a minor diversion. GFA SUPER VETS LEAGUE Gloucestershire FA’s inaugural Super Vets League has proved a real winner in the north of the county. Now plans are in place to replicate its success south of the region too, as teams are encouraged to sign up to form a southern section and mirror what is anticipated to be an expanded north division programme next season. GFA Super Vets is a seven-a-side league played exclusively by men over the age of 50 keen to demonstrate there is no expiry date when it comes to footballing talent. Super Vets bridges the gap between Gloucestershire FA’s Veterans 11-a-side and Walking Football leagues This season saw four teams locking horns in the north of the county across five fixture dates, making for 12 competitive games played out in a good spirit. For the 2016/17 season we have expanded the league, with matches now to be played at All Saints Academy and Tewkesbury School on their small-sided 3G pitches to make the league more accessible for a greater area of the county. Fixtures are played monthly, with each team

playing just over an hour of football on each date in 3 short matches – plenty of breaks! GFA football development officer Jack Stanbury explained: “The league operates very much with the belief that winning isn’t everything and sportsmanship and socialising rule all. “After every fixture all teams socialise together, discuss the day’s events and begin to look forward to the next meeting. “Although our first champions Real Brummagem have to make the trip back to Birmingham after each game, you can be sure to see them mixing in with our more local sides such as Charlton Rovers, Southside Star and

Stroud . “This philosophy exemplifies one of the many reasons we all love football, as it always provides an opportunity to socialise with like-minded people, regardless of age, ability and result!” Fixtures are played on Sundays from 11:00am 12:30pm with referees provided and fixtures and league tables managed by Gloucestershire FA. TEWKESBURY ROTARY CLASSIC VEHICLE FESTIVAL Following the disappointment of having to cancel the event last year the 2016 Tewkesbury Rotary Club’s Classic Vehicle Festival on 21st August was bigger and better than ever. With more classic cars on display and a huge crowd of visitors to admire the cars and stroll around the trade stands the club is hoping for a significant boost to the charity account. The presence of the Air Ambulance attracted a lot of interest and the Rotary Club will be making a donation to support the work of the Midlands Air Ambulance. They may be experiencing difficult child behaviour, family breakdown or other stresses linked to everyday life. They may want to offload or seek advice on problems which aren’t serious enough for social services to become involved, but if they don’t get support, the issues escalate. “Our aim is to provide an informal environment

where parents can offload and seek help - a safe space to chat to other parents who may be experiencing similar problems. Through early intervention we can help prevent families reaching crisis point further down the line.” The charity, based in Staunton, helps families, children and young people in need of support. It seeks to improve parents’ confidence, help with routines to get children to school, or more complex support dealing with challenging behaviours at home. The weekly drop-in sessions are set to begin

on Friday September 9 from 9.15am to 11.15am during term-time at Priors Park Chapel, Tewkesbury, until July 2017. The CFC grant is one of hundreds of organisations in England sharing around £30.5 million from the Reaching Communities and Awards for All programmes. Awards for All provides grants between £300 and £10,000 to voluntary and community organisations and Reaching Communities awards larger grants of £10,000 and above.

Whilst the main characters are the Van Glubig family, their story evolves in their ancestral estate, Georgenhof.. Father Eberhard, is away, based in Italy in a military support roll. His wife, Katharina is a quiet lady who locks herself away in her room while Peter, aged 12, their only surviving child, avoids the Hitler youth. Auntie from Silesia runs the house aided by immigrant servants. We are introduced to each member and also have an overview of the servants lives and their forays and affairs across the road to socialise in a workers camp. The book opens with episodes of the family receiving and entertaining a few passers-by who also appear briefly in the closing sections of the story. They enjoy a reasonable quality of life considering the Third Reich is collapsing and each story-line reveals more of the lives of the estate's household. Their lives take a dramatic change after Katharina agrees to help the local pastor and provide overnight refuge for a man. Mitkau, the local town, its Mayor and the new housing settlement across the road from the Georgenhof, where local party official Drygaliski interferes in everybody's life, including those at the family Estate all add

the intrigue to the plot. The ever present threat of the Russian invasion plays through the book and as events unroll each individual's life is affected and we follow the primary characters as their lives lead differing sometimes inter-connecting paths towards an uncertain future. This is an unusual story which provides an illuminating view of German life under Hitler. Each character inserting a sardonic 'Heil Hitler' in greetings, which provides a smile of amusement as we read about how a family survives and endeavours to gain a future as the Nazi regime implodes. There cannot be many other novels which can offer such a view of Germany in 1945. This is a good read, well translated, with each narrative line coming to some form of conclusion. Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Volunteers take a break from construction work at the new halt being built to serve Hailes Abbey

using building materials donated by BPS. The GWR is also progressing north towards Broadway, and expects to open its station at the village in the spring of 2018. BREDON IRONMAN On 17th July, Stephen Derrett from Bredon qualified for the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii – finishing 3rd in his age group at the UK Ironman in Bolton. Ironman is the longest distance of triathlon, consisting of a 2.6 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. After completing his first triathlon last August, this was Stephen’s first full distance race. His background is in swimming, having worked part-time as a lifeguard and swim teacher at Cascades for 4 years and says getting into running has been the biggest challenge. Stephen’s training schedule takes up most of his free time outside of work - totalling around 18 hours a week. He normally swims 400 lengths at the new Tewkesbury leisure centre, cycles 200 miles in the Malverns or Cotswolds and runs 30 miles around Bredon Hill each week, even in winter! Across the hilly UK Ironman course, he managed splits of 1.02 in the swim, 5.28 on the bike and 3.15 in his first ever marathon to finish under 10 hours and get the final World Championship slot in the 25-29 age group, even finishing ahead of a few professionals. He will now line up

against the world’s best on 8th October and against this elite competition isn’t expecting to be too near the front. The main target is to

enjoy the occasion and cope with the challenging heat, which will make it a very different experience to Bolton!

A LOVELY SUMMER DAY FOR NORTHWAY FETE The sun was certainly shining on the latest Northway Fete, held at the Gould Field, Northway on Saturday 6 August 2016, producing a day that was a great success. With an estimate of the highest number of visitors to date, together with an increased number of stalls and exhibitors, takings produced an overall net profit of £1,100 for Northway Community Volunteers (NCV), to be added to existing funds for Northway community projects. Organiser Jean Richardson thanks all the hard working volunteers and stall holders for this success, Dame Janet Trotter DBE for opening the event and spending time talking to so many, ‘Friends Uke-nited’ ukulele players for their entertainment, Croft Farm for bringing their climbing wall and Vernon Smith as Master of Ceremonies. Graced by gorgeous weather, it was universally acclaimed to be a highly enjoyable afternoon. It will be a hard act to beat.

Walking towards the Cross we reach the former premises of W T Broughton, a shoe and clothing manufacturer and retailer. The former business was based in the two properties that trade as Tillys Tearoom and Cartridge World today.

Again, we are lucky as the shopfront at number 83 is much the same, but the lower floor of 84 has changed considerably, although the decorative cornice above the window still exists. One has to wonder whether the original signwriting still exists under multiple layers of paint.

THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME, AUGUST 1916 After capturing the higher ground in the two-month battle, September saw four attacks in an attempt to break through to the flatter land beyond. Accordingly the British lost 115,056 men - but only 3 from Tewkesbury. The Allies could not rest on their laurels after the costly seizures of firstly Battle of Bazentin Ridge and subsequently High and Delville Woods because the Germans were still able to bombard them.

MUSEUM TALKS Tewkesbury Museum’s Autumn Talks start again in September. Six dates have been booked at the Trinity Hall venue in Oldbury Road, Tewkesbury, the first one will be on Wednesday September 28th and will feature Tewkesbury’s own Town Serjeant and Common Crier Mike Kean- Price answering the question, Where Do Town Criers Come From? “For Crying Out Loud.” The talks will run fortnightly until December, unfortunately we were unable to get the venue on regular Tuesdays as earlier in the year. However, an exciting group of speakers are being lined up and further details of dates will be advertised very soon. The Talks have been successful in their varied subjects, mostly local Tewkesbury history of the buildings, alleyways and forgotten pubs or shop premises, also of historic battle histories, polar expeditions, theatre, poetry and worldly travels. The Museum is having a good season this year with additional Web site and Facebook enquiries and many visitors enjoying the local history of our Market Town. The lecture/talks take place in the Trinity Hall, Oldbury Road, Tewkesbury. Starting time is 7pm. doors open at 6.30pm. and the event ends approx 8.30pm. The talks last approx one hour with a Q&A afterwards followed by tea/coffee/cake all inclusive of the £3 entrance fee. The venue is all on one level with all facilities, car parking free in adjacent Council car park. It is a small venue so limited space for roughly 50 plus in our audience. Ticket entrance on the door so arrive early to get a seat. The talks are fund raising events for the museum but also we would like to encourage anyone interested in volunteering to help in the running of the museum or join the Museum Friends Group which we are hoping to expand.

CRICKET CAMP Tewkesbury Cricket Club held its annual 3-day cricket camp for its junior players a in August. NO ONE SAW THIS COMING Lee Martin, organiser of Lakefest has written a book. How he found time, we don’t know, but with a subject close to his heart, Lee rekindles the magic and hopes of many, in his written work, Hippie. On general release from today (22 July 2016), Hippie is a novel for anybody ready to see life from a fresh perspective. A metaphysical pseudo-biography that address the big questions and a must-read for festival-goers. Half documentary and half novel about the Hippie phenomenon, the author, Lee Martin, is the founder of annual music festival, Lakefest. It’s a dynamic read, full of humour and anarchy. It’s a story for those who lived through the unique era and those who want to discover the roots of the music they listen to now. This book is a history of the hippie phenomenon, from its origins in the Beat Generation of the 1950s, through to its survival today in the form of newagers and post new-agers, environmentalists, alternative lifestyle enthusiasts and spiritualists. It traces the life of one particular Hippie on a journey from the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco in the 1960s to New York during the Summer of Love and then to Woodstock in 1969. The biography comes back to England at the end of that decade and the story resumes in the UK of the 1970s and 1980s. It narrates the history of the free festivals like Windsor and Stonehenge and the brutality hippies faced from the establishment and a rabid tabloid press. The book touches on Greenham Common and the Peace Movement, before taking the Hippie Trail and trekking to India and Nepal. The pseudo-biographer suffers personal loss on the way back and experiments with a commune as a way to deal with this trauma. He eventually goes back on the road in a horse-drawn vardo before organising his own music festival in Gloucestershire. Lee Martin’s outlook on life is to buck the trend and get away from the norm. With the spread of family-orientated festivals in the new millennium, Lee was one of the founders of Lakefest first happening in Gloucestershire in 2012… with a cider festival launching the idea for this in 2011 at Croft Farm Waterpark. FUN ON THE RIVER WITH SEVERN UNIT MVS FOR CHERNOBYL CHILDREN Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service joined in with Tewkesbury Sea Cadets from TS Otter to give a party of children and young people a great day out on the River Avon in August. Head of Severn Unit Nic Price said “We were pleased to be able to assist the Sea Cadets and also help the charity which invites a party of children over from Belarus who have suffered from high levels of radioactivity since the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power station reactor over 25 years ago. The idea of inviting them to the UK for a month's stay is so their immune systems can benefit from our cleaner environment and

to give them enjoyment and fun at the same time, MVS volunteers Russ Davidson and William Fish used two of

our small boats to give the children trips up the river and they had a wonderful time.”

THE BOAT INN BEER, CIDER AND MUSIC FESTIVAL FRIDAY 2ND, SATURDAY 3RD & SUNDAY 4TH OF SEPTEMBER 2016. The Boat Inn, Ashleworth will be holding their first Beer festival since being taken on by new landlord and landlady Mark and Chelsea who took over the historic riverside pub after a period of closure following serious flooding in 2014. The event, taking place on the first weekend of September is set to feature an outdoor bar featuring 20 real ales and 30 ciders, a pig roast and BBQ (vegetarian options available). There will also be a live music stage featuring a selection of fantastic musicians and bands, both from the local area and further afield including local favourites like Pholk Law, The No Good Nancys and Masterplan. Tickets are £5 for a single day or £10 for all three days. All tickets include a free festival pint glass and your first pint. The event will be raising money for two charities close to the organisers hearts, The Pied Piper Appeal and the Severn Area Rescue Association. Mark Fox, 32 says, “We’re so excited to be hosting our first festival at the Boat Inn and looking forward to seeing old friends and new. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

NO PLACE LIKE HAM

For many readers, this will be a walk in their own back yard, writes Jack B. Walker. Like most parts of old Tewkesbury, the Ham is atmospheric whatever the weather and is an excellent spot for an evening or morning stroll - especially at this time of year.

Distance: Distance: Just under 2 miles, flat. Check flood warnings before setting off. Car Parking: Back of Avon (time restriction) or any public car park in the town centre. Refreshments: Wide choice of restaurants, tea shops, pubs and sandwich bars in Tewkesbury. Map: Our sketch map above is not to scale and is for guidance only.

The walk starts from Back of Avon, where there is limited free parking for a time restricted period. Walk towards the former flour mills and cross the footbridge on to the Ham (1). The bridge crosses the Mill Avon, where a variety of pleasure craft now moor: some theories say that this tranquil channel may have been cut as long as 1,000 years ago. The Severn Ham is now an island, protected by trustees and undeveloped due to flooding. It is a sight of special scientific interest with rare plants and a variety of birds breeding here. Walk straight ahead until you see the Old Avon before you, near the point where it flows into the River Severn. Carry on walking along the river bank until you reach a weir (pictured right). The course of the Severn was altered here in the mid-nineteenth century, and a lock constructed to allow cargo vessels a passage north

to the Midlands. With the weir to your right, take the path immediately left across the centre of the Ham (2) and head back towards the riverside buildings. Go through the kissing gate (3) and over the footbridge to reach the Abbey Mill, which was featured in Mrs Craik’s novel John Halifax, Gentleman. Walk up Mill Street and go through the gateway on the right (4) into the Victoria Pleasure Gardens. This riverside park was laid out in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and has been restored in recent years by the Friends of Victoria Gardens Take the path on the left near the end of the gardens to reach the main road opposite the Abbey precinct (5). Turn left and walk back towards the cross. There are many tea shops and places of interest in this area. Bear left along the High Street and shortly

after the cross, turn left into Tolsey Lane (6), passing the Antiques Centre. On reaching Back of Avon, keep the river to your left to

return to the car park. Please note: the Ham is often used for grazing sheep. Please keep dogs on a lead when livestock is present.

We have in the past provided Care Homes with printed sheets, which list all of the medications each resident is prescribed. The Care Assistant then records when medication is issued or if the resident declines to take their medicines and why. The new system takes this service to a new level, where all medication levels are tracked in the home, all medicines issued are recorded for analysis by the Care Home Manager within the data base. Our system can use a pre printed bar code attached to each box of

medicine which ensures that the medication can only be given to the patient whose file is open at that time. The system can produce numerous reports, confirming for example how long each drug round took, and how many residents refused their medication. Modern Pharmacy services extend beyond our pharmacies, into the Community as a whole. I believe these systems will grow and develop which will be a big bonus to patients needing that extra support. It is a restoration of the currently only known Kohlruss Carosserie converted Volkswagen Barndoor van. These vans originally started off as standard panel vans and were converted to deluxes to be used as taxis and sight-seeing vehicles. This month’s Apperley Quarter Marathon will be raising money for The Superhero Foundation - a charity which supports local children - as well as Apperley Cricket Club.

The race will begin at 11.00am on Sunday 11th September. It’s a multi-terrain event (road and cross country) over a 6.55 mile course which takes in the Saxon churchyard at Deerhurst. Fancy dress is encouraged (especially superheroes and villains) and there awards for the first three men and women, the first male and female parishoners and the first Apperley cricketer. Also taking place this month is the Alderton 5k race (Saturday 10th September). This race is an outand-back course run on picturesque, quiet country lanes from Alderton, past the hamlet of Great Washbourne (where it turns just before the A46 at Beckford). The course is fairly flat and is ideal for the occasional jogger or the more serious runner looking to clock a good 5k time. 2015 times ranged from a course record 17:05 to over fifty minutes.
