REGGAE FESTIVAL HEADS FOR TOWN Croft Farm Waterpark, just outside Tewkesbury at Bredon’s Hardwick, is to host the UK’s largest Reggae and Dub Music festival - following a local council’s decision not to allow it to proceed at its planned location. One Love Festival was originally scheduled to take place at Popham Airfield in Hampshire but the fear of having to evacuate 2000 – 3000 people from an airfield, especially following a recent plane crash, meant the local council decided not to allow the event to go ahead. It will now take place at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, which has successfully hosted the Lakefest Music Festival for the past few years. A statement on the organisers’ website says “Whilst this seemed like a massive blow it actually turned out to be a blessing, as we have now secured a magical new site. “Croft Farm, with its lakeside camping and caravanning facilities, is an ideal ‘Reggae by the River’ setting.”

Tewkesbury's ‘Heritage Open Days’ is a series of free events and activities, taking place in and around the town centre, from Thursday 10th through to Sunday 13th September, writes Shelby Powell. There are places of interest with free admission, exhibitions, guided walks and talks all on offer. You can even gain access to places which are not normally open to the general public as well as travel by vintage bus! Once you have arrived in town, you’ll find each venue is no more than a five minute walk away – meaning you are never far away from discovering Tewkesbury’s rich history or stumbling upon one of our hidden gems. This year sees some new additions to the packed programme of events including access to the Town Museum’s storeroom which is usually a ‘staff’ only area to see some fascinating objects which are not generally on display in the main exhibition rooms. At Tewkesbury’s Heritage Centre, Out of the Hat, there will be two traditional craft activities for you to take part in: learn about the history of wallpaper making and have a go yourself plus take part in designing the big ‘Tewkesbury Mural’. While at Tewkesbury Abbey you can climb the Knight’s Stairs used by monks right up until the time when the monastery was dissolved in the 15th centenary and inspect the beautiful ceiling fresco inside the Lady Chapel apse.

Tewkesbury’s popular vintage fair also returns on Saturday 12th September. ‘Vintage on the Park’ includes a classic car show, an indoor vintage market and live authentic entertainment. The venue is the historic Tewkesbury Park Hotel and its stunning grounds with views of the town below. Visitors to Tewkesbury will be able to use the free vintage bus service to travel to the vintage and Heritage Open Days attractions in Church Street. The bus stop will be located at The Crescent (by Tewkesbury Abbey) and will operate between 11am and 4.30pm on the Saturday offering a twenty minute shuttle service. A visit to the Tourist Information Centre will reveal a fantastic selection of leaflets for inspi-

DAIRY UNVEILS PLANS FOR FUTURE Cotteswold Dairy has unveiled plans to redevelop its site in Northway Lane, Tewkesbury. In a special meeting held at Alderman Knight School the family run local dairy business met with members of the public, local residents and Tewkesbury Town and Borough Councillors to discuss the proposals which will be put to Tewkesbury Borough Council for consideration as part of the planning process. The plans being submitted for consideration include a re-sited lorry park, a new cold store extension, welfare and office space plus improved site access.

The masterplan provides a vision for the future of a modern efficient Dairy at their Northway Lane home. George Workman, Managing Director of Cotteswold Dairy said ‘We have been on our present site since 1969 and have been aware for some time that we need to modernise our facilities to maximise its potential and make sure we can continue to trade as profitable Gloucestershire- based dairy. ‘As a family run business we’re very con-

A BEE LINE FOR TOWN’S HANGING BASKETS The activities of Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers haven't gone unappreciated by the local wildlife population, and a large colony of bees decided to set up home in one of the Bishops Walk hanging baskets outside Woody's Fruit & Veg shop. As you can see from the picture, the hanging basket was turned into a very comfortable hive by these uninvited insects, craftily setting up home with a delicious food supply just a few feet underneath them! Luckily local bee keeper, Nick Lambert, who runs a small holding from the Old Manor Twyning was on hand to re-home the swarm with a helping hand from Brian Williams of Cornerways Nursery. Britain in Bloom judges like to see planting schemes to support pollinators (these are the insects which visit flowers to collect nectar, carrying pollen from one flower to another to enable plants to reproduce), but this was an unexpected bonus in Tewkesbury town centre!

Visitors stay for longer following new parking charges More people are visiting Tewkesbury for longer, according to the latest car park ticket sales. Figures show that since the Borough Council introduced a new car parking strategy in April, there has been a 150% increase in the number of over three hour tickets sold. In addition, over the same period there has been a six per cent increase in ticket sales overall, which indicates that the town is enjoying a busier year when compared to 2014. The borough council’s new strategy introduced the new charges of £1 for one hour, £2 for up to three hours and £4 for over three hours. This replaced the older pricing structure of £2 for two hours, £3.50 for three hours, £5 for four hours and £8 for over four hours - meaning anyone staying in the town centres for longer than two hours now finds it cheaper to do so. The figures are a wel-

come result for the borough council, which hoped the new strategy would encourage visitors and shoppers to support local businesses by spending longer in the two towns. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development Councillor Rob Bird said: “'Our objective was to help local businesses in our two stunning market towns, by encouraging people to visit and stay longer, through cheaper and simpler parking charges. “These early figures indicate some success, and are excellent news for the economy of Tewkesbury. “We are continuing to work on other elements of our parking strategy, including new signage and mobile phone payments, and we hope to introduce these later on in the year.”

he latest book by the author of 'Property' which won the Orange Prize back in 2003, a book that many readers might have read and enjoyed, is a nautical tale and a story of mystery awaiting a resolution. The story line is explained, in part, by the title and the subtle name change suits this subtle novel. A ship is found adrift without its crew and in so doing introduces the Cobbs and the Briggs even though family members have been lost. These families are the backbone to the story. Fast forward to 1888 and we are introduced to Phoebe Grant, a journalist who meets Violet, a spiritualist who before this career was Hannah Cobb. Phoebe becomes the

catalyst in unravelling the mystery, but not without Conan Doyle reappearing in America, now famous, on a signing tour and then later in the UK when eventually he uncovers the log of the Marie Celeste. The use of Conan Doyle, who wrote a short story called 'The Captain of the Polestar', cements the story together and the storyline is formed by the actions of Sherlock's creator, the journalist and Violet. For how the climax of the book unfolds and how the mystery of the Celeste is resolved or not, you will need to read this well crafted book, written by a true professional. Mitton celebrates as playground revamp takes a step forwards The Mitton community is celebrating after their playground revamp project was awarded £18,300 from the Tewkesbury Borough Council capital grant fund. Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Communities Cllr Kay Berry said: “We are really pleased to see our capital funding being used to support a project which will have such a positive impact for our Mitton community. “We have hopefully given Emma and the residents' association a strong start to their improvement campaign, and we look forward to seeing the refurbished playground.”

The campaign to get a revamp sorted has been spearheaded by local resident Emma Wild with the support of MACA residents association. Emma Wild, campaign lead said “I'm absolutely thrilled that we've been awarded this funding. The playground is in an awful state and this funding is a great platform for us to move forward with. We now have the challenge of finding the another £30k

to £40k and any help anyone can offer will be gratefully received.” The site, now owned by Tewkesbury Town Council has changed very little in 40 odd years and is in desperate need of refurbishment. Tewkesbury Town Council's Cllr Mike Sztymiak said: “The local friends and community group in Mitton

Anniversary of the Battle of Loos Remembered: September 2015 The Battle of Loos in 2015 brought two firsts: volunteers in battle and British use of Gas, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. 689 Tewkesbury men responded to Lord Kitchener’s famous appeal - and some of them joined the 10th Gloucesters. They trained to be soldiers over one year - partly on Salisbury Plain but managed to spend the winter lodging in Cheltenham. However, in August 1915 the battalion was sent to France Gas mask and given just 6 weeks of trench hardening. They were thrown into the Battle of Loos, one of the first volunteer battalions to be part of a ‘Big Push’. The war had not ‘ended by Christmas’ and both sides were desperate to end the stalemate of Trench Warfare. The Fighting 10th was at least teamed with the very experienced Regular 1st Gloucesters, who had fought during the epic battles of Mons, Marne, Aisne and Ypres I. The battle was ill-prepared - in the wrong place and with a shortage of shells. So Gas was used as an experiment. On 25 September the 10th lost 459 men: from Tewkesbury: T Hall, J A Simms, E Nunney, C Wagstaff and 45-year-old teacher, A. Harrison. The Germans counter-attacked and this time Regulars lost their lives: E Rice, T New and A Didcote. By 13th October the battle petered out in failure - the British C-in-C was sacked. Had lessons been learned? PS: after 19-2-1919, Joseph Cook was buried with no CWGC headstone. His family claims he died having inhaled Loos gas. John Dixon

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society I was shocked when Keith Bannister, a THS Member from Barnsley, sent me the photograph of the former Yew Tree Cottages in 1947 when the Swilgate was in full flood - yet again! What a fine set of Victorian Houses were lost when demolished by 1973. The four Yew Tree Cottages (can anyone spot the Yew Tree?) were owned by Tewkesbury’s richest man, F. W. Godfrey, the son of the partner of Collins the builder. In 1897 he bought the whole area of properties between the Swilgate and Church Street - from 9 (the Unisex Hairdressers) to 16 Church Street (Sherford House). The estate was sold Godfrey the after younger’s death in 1941. The cottages were inhabited by longstanding families, the Coates, Parkers and Greens and the Panters. The man in the waders, Wilfred Key, had married Kathleen Panter. Pictured above is Fanny Cook, a Parker, who had been widowed after her husband Keith’s uncle - had been

crushed to death by earth whilst building the new flood defences at the Abbey Mill in 1934. What was the wellbuilt structure upon which Fanny is perched - it was opposite the cottages presumably in the present parking area? Do readers agree with the late Rimbo Green who claimed, in a newspaper article, that it was known as “Matthews’ Mixun”? It was the place where butcher Charlie Matthews - of 5 Church Street - threw unwanted bones from his slaughterhouse. Does one ever forget a foul smell? Over to you. John Dixon

LOCAL STUDENT HELPS GIVE DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN A WEEK TO REMEMBER 18 year-old student Emma Coleman from Tewkesbury helped give disadvantaged children the experience of a lifetime by volunteering on a week-long respite break with the charity, CHICKS. Emma Coleman travelled to the charity’s retreat in Brentor, Devon where she stayed residentially with a group of 16 children and a small team of volunteers and charity staff. CHICKS offers free respite breaks for disadvantaged children from all across the UK. For many of the children, CHICKS is the first ‘holiday’ they’ve ever known and they are able to experience new activities such as visiting the seaside and riding a horse. Emma said, ‘‘I really

enjoyed seeing the children benefit from the activities, and seeing how their confidence grew in a matter of days.” “My favourite memory from the week was when a girl who was initially scared of the swimming pool became confident enough to play with other children in the water, and was even asking staff to help her swim! It was amazing to see – that’s the impact of CHICKS.” Emma said: “The volunteer experience gives

you the best of both worlds, as you are helping the children as well as having a good time and enjoying yourself!” This year CHICKS aims to help over 1,300 children from across the UK and will require the support of over 400 volunteers. A survey of 2,000 Britons found that technology is leaving people less skilled. 93 per cent think teaching these skills should be brought back into school. If you can no longer remember how to darn socks, read a map or light a fire, it seems you are not alone. A study has revealed the top 20 traditional skills that are dying out in a world of convenience and technology. Using a compass, tying specific knots and even having clear handwriting also made the list.

SKILLS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL IN MODERN DAY LIFE 1. Searching the Internet 2. Using/connecting to

WiFi 3. Using a smart phone 4. Online banking 5. Knowing about privacy setting online 6. Searching and applying for jobs online 7. Being able to turn water off at the mains 8. Using and following a sat-nav 9. Updating, installing computer programs 10. Working a tablet Even if it’s a skill you think you no longer need, it’s important to have at least a basic grasp of it - basic map reading skills are vital as sometimes, often when you don’t want it, batteries and phone signals let you down. Using a compass came second followed by being able to tie specific knots, darn socks and look something up in a book index instead of simply ‘Googling it’. Correct letter writing technique, understanding pounds and ounces and being able to convert them into grams and kilos, spelling and grammar and being able

to start a fire from scratch completed the top ten. Handwriting, knitting and touch typing are also among the traditional skills which could be on their way out.

The study found almost eight in ten blame the decline of these skills on technology, while another 54 per cent think it’s due to children no longer learning them at school. Ninety-four per cent even believe there could soon be entire generations of people who have no idea how to do some of the skills once considered essential. Southern Railway, Merchant Navy class locomotive Peninsula and Oriental line has been painstakingly restored from a scrapyard wreck after it was taken out of service in 1964. Built in 1941, P&O hauled crack express trains to the West Country from Salisbury and ended it’s working

P&O as it arrived in 1983 life in a scrapyard at Barry in South Wales. The locomotive was rescued and bought to Toddington in 1984, and

it’s restoration has cost an estimated £500,000, which included the construction of a new tender.

JAMES TAKES SECOND Last month we featured James Wallis, the young racing driver, and his father Nick has sent in this race report. James raced at Swaffham, Norfolk on Sunday in the new car. This was the first time out in the car that was featured last month, with all body styling finished. I am pleased to report that it was a success. James was up against very experienced drivers who are 3-4 years older

than him. In the first qualifying heat he came 3rd with a solid performance. In the second heat he had a spin out, but still managed fourth place. In the Grand final of the day, he drove very well from the rolling start and was at the front of field for much of the race. With wheel to

wheel racing in the closing lap, the 2014 Championship winner just managed to get past James, giving him a very credible second place podium position. James heads to Birmingham on 23rd August for the next fixture. All updates are on his website www.jcwracing.co.uk.

Something in a Cardboard Box Many of our native bird species have been declining in numbers for decades, almost certainly because of the impact that we have had, and continue to have, on this planet, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. The barn owls is one species that has been hit hard because of, amongst other things, habitat loss and therefore loss of hunting and nesting areas and also because of the increasing number of roads and vehicles causing a huge death toll to many birds and mammals. One day in May of this year, we received a call from the RSPCA to see if we could help with four very young barn owl chicks that had been dumped at one of their domestic animal rehoming centres. Where they had come from remained a mystery but it was suspected that they had been taken from the wild which is totally illegal to do. Of course we agreed to take them in and they were brought over to the hospital. If ever there was an ‘ugly duckling’ the barn owl is the classic exam-

where they didn’t see people at all. It didn’t take long for them to develop into totally wild, fully feathered, beautiful barn owls and we needed to think about releasing them. We decided to send them down to Devon to the Barn Owl Trust where they have more experience of releasing birds like this and also some great release sites. They left us a couple of weeks ago on the last stage of their journey back to the wild. Barn owl chick less the same size. We reared them well away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the hospital, in our rearing unit so we could make sure they didn’t become imprinted (used to people and reliant on humans). They were then moved to a seclusion aviary where they could

As is usual with barn owls (and many other species), the time between each egg hatching can be several days and so there is always a big size difference between the first and the last chick hatched. T he biggest of the four weighed 230 grams on arrival and the smallest was a mere 73 grams. It is fairly common for the smallest chick not to survive as, with the competition for food brought back to the nest by the adults, the little one often loses out as the larger and stronger chicks get most of the food. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

ALONG THE FORGOTTEN WATERWAY For those who love wildlife, history and easy walking, this month’s ramble has it all, writes Jack B. Walker. A completely flat route takes us along the disused Coombe Hill Canal, and gives the opportunity to visit a wonderfully managed wetland nature reserve - where wildfowl and all manner of birds may be observed year-round. But please note the walk must not be undertaken in times of flood!

The route is easy to follow as it simply takes the towpath along the old canal. Use the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Car Park by the wharf, which is reached from a narrow lane from the traffic lights on the A38 at Coombe Hill. Exit the car park at the bottom corner and join the towpath along the bank. The canal was originally constructed in the late eighteenth century to take goods to the growing spa town of Cheltenham, but was never a success. It changed hands several times in the first half of the nineteenth century, but in the face of competition from railways and improving road links, it was never going to be viable to complete the five mile route into town. But now the waterway provides a lovely (if flat) landscape through to which to stroll. Continue along the towpath, passing the first footbridge (1). (If

your time is limited, you can cross the canal here and just visit the nature reserve). Carrying on, you will pass the southern meadows, to the left, which is part of the designated SSSI. At the second footbridge (2), cross the canal and turn right to walk back on the opposite bank. The main part of the Coombe Hill Meadows nature reserve will now be on your left. When you reach a wooden fence on the left (3), take the boardwalk to the Grundon Hide, which affords an excellent view of the scrapes and wetlands: noticeboards in the hide detail the birds which may be observed from here. Retrace your steps until you reach a small gate on the left, go through it and cross the meadow to rejoin the towpath (4). Turn left and walk back to the wharf. Turn right over the bridge (5) to return to the car park.

SCHOOL TROPHY COLLECTION RESCUED FROM MUSEUM CELLARS A school’s collection of silverware is to be given a new lease of life after rescue from the cellars of a town’s museum by an ‘old boys’ society. Committee members of the Old Theocsbrians Society - former students of Tewkesbury Grammar School agreed to place the collection of school trophies for display in Tewkesbury Museum after comprehensive education was established in 1972. “The trophies, awarded for sporting and other achievements, never really saw the light of day at the Museum, and although museum curator Maggie Thornton

looked after them in storage, a lack of display space meant they gathered dust over many years”, said society president David Haines Now Gary Watson, head teacher at the present Tewkesbury School, who last year was a guest at the Old Theocsbrians annual dinner, has agreed to award some of the trophies to present-day school winners, as well as to display the whole collection in a cabinet at the school.

The cleaned and polished collection will be presented to Tewkesbury School at a ceremony in the afternoon before old boys gather for the Old Theocsbrian Society’s at annual dinner Gupshill Manor, Tewkesbury, on Saturday, September 26. 785 (Tewkesbury) Squadron is Tewkesbury’s Air Training Corps, a voluntary youth group and part of the Air Cadet Organization and RAF. We are a growing squadron and always happy to welcome new cadets, boys and girls, aged 12 (in Year 8 at school) to 17. The opportunities available are endless but flying is central to our purpose and our Cadets have flown many times with the RAF. They also take part in camps (sometimes overseas), adventurous training, competitive sports, drill, shooting, music and engineering projects to name just a few! During recent Royal the International Air Tattoo at Fairford, two of our Cadets, Dan Iles and Myra Cooke, joined other Squadrons to help with the smooth running of the show. For a week they, along with Air Cadets from all over the country, had behind the scenes access to the aircraft and crews during their downtime. RAF Shawbury and Brize Norton are two of the

camps some of our other Cadets are attending this summer. As they progress, Cadets can qualify for BTECs in Aviation and Public Services and work towards their Duke of Edinburgh and Junior Leaders awards. Warrant Officer Paul Smith has recently taken over the Squadron and he, along with Sergeant Thomas Baker are busy filling up the Squadron calendar with new activities and visits for the Cadets. Our parade nights are on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7.30-9.30pm at the Squadron base in Red Lane. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, which recently received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, is staging a special craft fair at Winchcombe Station this month. The exhibition - which will open from 10.30am until 4.00pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September - will showcase what some of the volunteers get up to when they are not working of the railway. For the duration of the show, the GWR’s brand-new Discovery Coach will be open, as will a model railway.

Normal train services will be running on both days, from Cheltenham Racecourse and Toddington Stations.

Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends also make a welcome return the railway this month. On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September the popular blue engine will be steaming up to haul trains, and there will be lots to see and do for all ages. MOP FAIR IS BACK IN TOWN Tewkesbury Fair Society has announced its programme for this year’s Mop which will be held on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October. The Mop fair will open at 6pm on the Friday, but ahead of that there will be a Showman’s Social at the Royal British Legion on Thursday 8th October. The model show will take place between 10am and 4pm, in Holy Trinity Church Hall, on Saturday 10th October. Commenting in the TFS Newsletter, Chair Steve Perry said: “We can’t help but see the new swimming pool taking shape, which is good news for the town. “The society is worried about what is happening to the Spring Gardens site, as it is a big part of the fair when the mop comes to town. “With this in mind the Tewkesbury Fair Society has put in a Community Right to bid for the Spring Gardens site, as this is an area of community value.”

Any proposed action to restore the floor to a firm and level condition, is simply not economically viable, and would only be a temporary fix! Complete replacement is

required. The project will also necessitate the removal/replacement of internal walls, moving cupboards, a heater, and rewiring some of the electrical circuits. Ripple Parish Hall Management Committee will be seeking to obtain Grant support for the project, but will need donations and local fund-raising events to reach the target. LAKEFEST ORGANISERS ANNOUNCE BIG NEWS FOR 2016 The directors of the summer festival have confirmed that Lakefest 2016 will be moving to a larger venue. Due to the popularity of the family-friendly event, the festival will be moving to Eastnor Castle, near Ledbury, for its fifth year. It is a decision that has been made by Lakefest Directors, Lee Martin, Steve Daff and Martin Newell, due to the need for further space. The festival has evolved to such a degree over the past four years that now is the time to seek a larger site in order to accommodate larger crowd numbers. In addition to this, Croft Farm land owner, Alan Newell, is developing a holiday village, in the field in which Lakefest is currently held, which will also bring trade to the local area. All three of the directors live locally with their families and are in no way moving away from supporting local businesses. Their plan to return to Croft Farm Waterpark in 2017 with

a smaller summer festival, held on a different date to that of Lakefest taking place at Eastnor Castle. Lee Martin, Lakefest Director said, “We are delighted to be able to share this exciting news with you. This is a crime that we have had problems with in the past and unfortunately it appears to be returning, writes Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. The rogue traders will pick their victims by observing premises where residents are elderly, vulnerable or live alone. They usually work in pairs and one will often do most of the talking while the other will take an interest in the premises. The methods they use differ but the aim is always the same to trick you into parting with your money for work on your home which is at best shoddy with poor quality materials and at worst totally unnecessary.

The most common services offered are tiles or slates that need replacing on the roof, chimneys needing re-pointing, guttering needing replaced or cleaning, and drives requiring jet washing. In dealing with these traders there are some basic tips which I will list below: Unless you have made a prior appointment with the traders don’t allow them access to your home, keep the

chain on the door and inform them that you are contacting the police. Never part with any money up front. They will often ask for a deposit to buy materials I guarantee this will be the last you see the traders and your money. Should you actually require any work, always ask for a detailed estimate and ensure at least three are obtained. Ask family or friends to recommend trades-

men who have given good service and value for money. Don’t be pressurised into making quick decisions and be wary of any special offers which are only available on the day. Talk it over will family or friends. Never accompany any traders to the bank or cash point machine. Should you be a victim of these unscrupulous traders don’t be afraid to contact the Police it may stop them from targeting another vulnerable person. Sgt Henry Wright Tewkesbury Police

GARY AND VICKI CLEAN UP A few weeks before the national judging date, Tewkesbury's Britain in Bloom volunteers decided the town needed an extra uplift, writes Shelby Powell. Road signs, bollards and bus shelters were looking dirty and grimy, but how could these be tackled in a public space without access to lad-

of some great surgeons he is still with us. “So we move on, 2015 will be a year which almost broke many of my families hearts, my 15 year old great nephew was told he has a brain tumour, the outcome of survival from the surgery was not good, how much more painful can life get. “Major brain surgery took place and life was touch and go, the operation was difficult and with many complications, a second operation was needed to get this monster of a disease, and yet this young man’s strength, courage and determination was outstanding throughout. “Whilst all of us around cried and had fingers and toes crossed, he still managed to smile and laugh and joke with us. “Now, several months later we are almost at the end of a difficult journey, the final stages of chemotherapy, and hopefully an all clear sign will be given, never the less still a massive journey for someone so young and brave. “Now the final straw, one of my best friends who lives abroad was diagnosed with cancer only two months ago. BOATERS CAN STOP OVER From September Tewkesbury's short stay moorings at Back of Avon will be back in action offering boaters an additional short stay option in town. Karen Brennan the Town Council's Deputy Mayor has been working with Avon Navigation Trust to make sure the moorings are brought back to an acceptable standard just in time to re-open them before the end of the summer season. The team gave up their time to help Tewkesbury in Bloom and smarten up the Back of Avon by painting the metal railings either side of The Ham footbridge, which has recently received a lick of paint by volunteers.
