MUSEUM WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO ‘SECRET AIRFIELD’ AND STAFF

The new RAF Defford Museum, due to open at the end of this month, will be a tribute to everyone who served at the wartime station - hidden away in Croome Park. A former sick quarters building, near the National Trust visitor centre and café, has been faithfully restored to its 1942 appearance and will house the new museum. Fitting out of the interior is now underway and when complete the history and heritage of the ‘secret airfield’ will be revealed. The museum will tell the story of the men and women of the RAF, Royal Navy and US Air Forces, as well as civilian scientists, technicians and supporting staff. It will acknowledge their truly extraordinary achievements in the second World War, when

RAF Defford became the main station in Britain for the development of airborne radar. The airfield housed the Telecommunications Flying Unit and carried out pioneering flight trials until its closure in 1957. The experiments and developments undertaken at Defford

Town marks WW1 Centenary Tewkesbury marked the 100th anniversary of Britain's entry into WW1 last month by holding three days of special events in the town centre co-ordinated by the Town Council, writes Shelby Powell.

During the commemorative weekend visitors were invited to view artefacts and memorabilia displayed in the Town Hall, and thanks to research undertaken by members of the Historical Society there was an opportunity to find out how the Great War affected the people of Tewkesbury.

Volunteers from Tewkesbury RAF Veterans Association served tea and homemade cakes as well as running a fundraising tombola. Members of the 2nd Battalion Glosters reenactment group set up camp inside the Corn Exchange providing an insight into the more modern equipment available to the WW2 soldier compared to that available to men fighting in the trenches. A Town Hall corridor was transformed into a

1940's replica pub, 'The Wheatsheaf'. Sunday brought a commemorative parade when adult and junior members of local unformed organisations marched through the town centre with Tewkesbury Town Band stopping to salute local dignitaries outside the Town Hall. A two minute silence was observed at The Cross at 11 am the following day. On the eve of Monday 4th August Geoff Pope organised an enjoyable fundraising Pints & Poems event at Theoc House, the Royal British Legion club opened its doors to the public, and a candle light vigil took place at the Abbey. Many local residents also turned out the lights in their homes, and lit candles in remembrance. If you missed the commemorative events, you can view a selection of images on Facebook. VINTAGE FAIR IS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND Vintage fans are being invited to visit Tewkesbury's Vintage and Collector's fair which returns to the Watson Hall in Barton Street on Saturday 13th September. The official opening will take place at 10am by Emma Mason who goes by the stage name of Lady Allure. Emma has been shortlisted in the semi finals of a national competition, ‘Miss Pin Up UK.’ There will be live music from Betsy Harmony from noon, and a toe-tapping jive dance demonstration by Gary and Sara Boon of Gloster Jive at 1.00pm. Models will be showcasing vintage fashions and accessories on the catwalk from 3.00pm.

New for this event is a 'pop up vintage cinema' a presentation featuring iconic actors and actresses of the silver screen who epitomise the vintage Hollywood glamour era. This will be set up in the Tudor Room. Entry to the event is free and donations are being collected for the Town Mayor's charity fund. The event closes at 4.30pm and will be followed by a Rock & Roll Charity Disco. Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased at the Vintage Fair or by calling 07977 098951.

Depot Dash for National Star Tewkesbury-based Cotteswold Dairy have put together a team to take part in a gruelling ‘depot dash’ cycle challenge later this month. Led by directors George Workman and Tom Wood, a team of eleven members of staff will embark on a 210 mile journey to raise money for the National Star College Pittville Project. The route starts at Cotteswold’s distribution depot on the Isle of Anglesey and will end at their production site in Tewkesbury, going via their other depots at Conwy, Shropshire, Tenbury Wells and

Cheltenham. The Cotteswold Dairy cyclists will pedal off on Friday 19th September and aim to arrive in Tewkesbury some time on Sunday 21st September. National Star is an incredible and inspiring place that transforms the lives of young people with complex disabilities, every minute of every day. Alongside other routes, residential-based

learning projects help these young people take responsibility and learn independence. Sadly, the building currently used for this is no longer fit for purpose and simply does not meet the sometimes complex and varying needs of young people with disabilities today. The college plans to replace it with new accommodation that is more appropriate and up-to-date, on land that

Actor Robert Powell called in for a pint and a bite to eat while filming an episode of the BBC’s ‘Celebrity Antiques Road Trip’ in Tewkesbury. Powell, aged 70, is best remembered for the lead role in the epic 1977 TV film ‘Jesus of Nazareth, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. He has appeared in over twenty movies, including ‘The 39 Steps’ and ‘The Italian Job’and has received Best Actor Awards from both Paris and Venice Film Festivals. TV work has seen the actor play leading parts in ‘Holby City’ and with comedian Jasper Carrott in ‘The Detectives’. He is seen less on the screen these days, but his distinctive voice has narrated many documentaries and he is much in demand for commercial work and for producing audio books. Robert Powell has been married to former Pan’s People dancer Babs Lord since 1975.

IF IT WASN’T FOR US HUMANS... Throughout the year we are called to deal with many strange situations involving wildlife, most of which are due to some form of human activity or interference writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife. A common predicament that a variety of wild animals find themselves in involves netting of some sort - e.g. sports netting, garden netting or pond protection. Hedgehogs are one of the most common casualties of netting incidents, regularly getting caught up in garden or football nets which can cause terrible injuries leading to major infections and even amputations on occasions. Grass snakes that like to frequent garden ponds, hunting for small fish and frogs to eat, can surprisingly get entangled in the netting that people cover their ponds with, mainly to protect their fish from herons. Having to extricate grass snakes from this situation is a fairly common call for us and we have also been called to herons that have not been put off by the net covering and have become caught in the net while trying to take advantage of a fish supper. Over the years we have also seen some nasty injuries caused to tawny owls which seen to have a knack of getting themselves caught up in football netting. Our latest fox call-out, although not involving football netting, does

however involve the sport – the call was to a fox with a football stuck on its head! This certainly was a new one for us! Foxes are very inquisitive and they have been known to get themselves into all sorts of predicaments because of their nosiness. We have dealt with foxes with tin cans on their heads, one situation where a fox had put his head into a hole in a tree trunk and then couldn’t get it out again, but never a football before. The fox was spotted by a dog walker close to a footpath and we were called out see if we could help. Because he couldn’t see anything with his head wedged firmly inside the football, he was easy to catch, the ball was removed and with no physical injuries, probably just a bit of embarrassment, he was set free to go on his way. How he managed to get the ball on his head we just don’t know but there was probably something inside it such as a mouse or a slug which the fox was attracted to. Visitors will be able to walk around the High Altar and look at a number of items not usually on show including an illustrated prayer book, bibles, Abbey silverware, The Birmingham Cross, a pair of Indian candlestick, a pair of medieval shoes, Church Warden’s staves and a Virge. The silverware on show will include a 1910 paten, a 1899 Chalice and the Gold Chalice. Some of the plate will be laid out to show how it is used in services, and there will be artefacts from the time when the Abbey still housed Monks. The exhibition will take place in the choir, on Friday 12th and Saturday 13h September. Access will be through the Choir gate, opposite the Sacristy where helpful guides will be around to explain what you are looking at. Entry to the Exhibition is free, and other areas of the Abbey remain open as normal.

TEWKESBURY RETAILERS COME UP TRUMPS! Tewkesbury VIPs was set up last November and is a monthly social club for local sight impaired people. The new venture started with virtually no money and the success of the club is due in no small part to the generosity of our local retailers. Club founder, Chris Chapman, approached Warners Budgens who immediately responded by offering to provide supplies for each meeting. Other retailers soon followed their example including: Cotteswold Dairy, Morrisons, Northway Co-op, Tesco Metro, Nisa at Twyning Village Stores and Mid Counties Co-op.

Between them they provide refreshments, raffle prizes and other items and it’s their support that enables the club to be financially viable. Tewkesbury Baptist Church provides a homely environment for meetings with the heating going on early in the colder months. One of the club aims is to connect members

with the local community and here, Village Agent David Cooper. is a real asset. The Red Cross are also great in linking the members to a variety of things to which they are entitled as well as providing soothing massage sessions. The Abbey Mill is a favourite target for amateur photographers (such as the author in 2003) and it graces the cover of the current edition of the Local Historian, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. There have been at least two buildings on the site and it was probably built about the same time as the Abbey in the 12th century. The monks caused a leat, known today as the Mill Avon, to be dug to source waterpower from the River Avon near King John’s Bridge. After the Dissolution of the Monastery, the mill continued in private hands, the last millers being the Rice family who left the business in 1929. after new sluice gates for better flood prevention had been installed in 1935, when the building appeared to be in a dilapidated state. However, it did subsequently thrive as a café, becoming a favourite haunt for tourists arriving by charabancs in the inter-war years. Then it was marketed as Abel Fletcher’s Mill, because of its fictitious connection with the Victorian melodrama, John Halifax Gentleman, written by Mrs. Craik. Even a recently arrived resident, such as me, can remember enjoying medieval banquets there in the 1980s. Photograph B, from John Dixon’s collection, shows Abbey Mill in 1927. However, since 2003, (photograph C) it has been converted into luxurious apartments. What a pity it is that no obligation was imposed to maintain the one water wheel, still evident from Mill Street. A total of 53 dog walkers have signed up to the growing scheme, which sees residents across the borough pulling together to help reduce opportunities for crime. Walkers can register to join while out and about in the neighbourhood, and are issued with all necessary contact numbers to help crack down on dog fouling, fly tipping and antisocial behaviour. Incidents are reported to Tewkesbury Borough Council, the local police or Crimestoppers. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community Cllr Sue Hillier-Richardson said: “It’s fantastic to see how communities in Tewkesbury borough have really jumped on board with our Paws on Patrol scheme. “ All public footpaths and open spaces are designated under the Dog Fouling of Land Act 1996 and if someone fails to pick up after their dog, the council can prosecute in the Magistrates Court and

TWYNING BROWNIES CELEBRATE 50TH BIRTHDAY On 16th July 1964 Twyning Brownies was officially created. Set up by Joan Davis and Violet Brookes with 7 Brownies in the Pack, subsequent Brown Owls included Heather Williams, Caroline Gurney, Ann Baker, Sue Harbottle and their current leader Carole Clive. This July the girls celebrated their 50th Birthday in style. The Brownies had great fun at their all-day party learning circus skills, stilt walking and juggling. They made Owl table decorations and bead dangles, enjoyed a traditional Brownie singsong and plenty of Brownie birthday cake. Also attending the party were some of the ex leaders and local commissioners including one of the first helpers Violet Brookes and the current Division President Councillor Claire Wright who presented Sophie Benson ex. Twyning Guide Leader and District Commissioner with her 20 year service award.

TEWKESBURY CLASSIC VEHICLE FESTIVAL Now in its fourth year, a lot of effort and organisation produced another great day for Tewkesbury Rotary Club’s signature charity event. As luck would have it, after a worrying start, the weather decided to be kind to us and the traders and exhibitors started to pile in.

Exhibitor numbers were up by nearly a third; last year we had 500 cars and a decent line up of wonderful bikes, but ran out of space in the arena by early afternoon. This year we increased the size to accommodate 700 cars to include those that couldn’t get in last year – and with great staffing, managed to pack them in, BUT, by late lunch, once again, we ran out of space and had to park around 70

late-comers outside! There were some truly great entries, including a beautifully restored 1904 Peugeot and a very rare 1904 De Dion Bouton; a local car owned by Mrs Angela Trevelyan, wife of Bugatti Owners Club chairman, Charles Trevelyan. The significance of this little single cylinder 970 cc beauty is that it has never missed a ‘London to Brighton Run’ in all these years!

Arena was graced with six Ferraris and a huge line up of elderly Minis, as well as some more rare and exotic machinery, some of which looked as though it had never left the showroom. American ‘muscle’ was provided by a gorgeous 1958 Corvette as well as some much prized Cadillac, Lincoln Chevrolet ‘Land Yachts’, typical of the ‘60’s’. The line-up of bikes ranged from a 100 year old Triumph; (one of only 8 running machines left in the world that ran in the very first ‘Pioneer Run’ in 1930), to some rare Hondas, BSA’s and Triumphs. The exceptionally good ‘Haywood Sisters’ came back again this year, by popular request to entertain us with period classic songs and ‘Barrie with his accordion’, a long standing stalwart of Rotary, along with a Dixieland Jazz Quintet, added some variety to a busy musical schedule. This year, some really good hot food was provided by ‘Susie’s outside catering, serving freshly home-made burgers and

bangers on the South side of the field and Danters Burger and candyfloss on the North side. Rotary supplied tea, coffee, sandwiches, bacon rolls and cakes and will do so again next year. A very efficient bar was run by the Tewkesbury branch of ‘The Royal British Legion’, a very worthy partner to this Festival. We want them back year on year, to which they’ve kindly agreed. The trade stands and craft market stalls for the most part, had a decent day of trading; I walked round the arena to ask them about their day. Just about everyone said they wanted to come back next year, so that’s what I call a result! Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival next year will be held on Sunday 23rd August; put it in your diary. NORTHWAY SUMMER FETE The 6th Annual Northway Fete, the most extensive so far, held at Gould’s Field on 2 August 2014 from 1-5 p.m., was dogged by bad weather. As forecast the day produced spells of heavy rain, not least in the morning as the various stallholders arrived to set up their gazebos. These were the worst conditions suffered in

the six years but, despite the downpours and the competing attractions in Tewkesbury High Street on the day, the crowds poured in during the early afternoon when the event was blessed

with a couple of hours of bright, warm sunshine. After the slow start the visitors, including the Borough Mayor and his wife, enjoyed the Judo displays, Zorbs, rifle range, bouncy castle and children’s carousel, the hot dog/burger stand and the many colourful and varied stalls. The refreshments in the adjacent community building were also much appreciated during the wet weather spells and

the stands in the same building also benefitted from the increased footfall. Takings were inevitably affected by the rain, but a profit of around £690 was still made and much of this will go towards plans for a revamped BMX track on Gould’s Field. Grateful thanks go especially to the willing volunteers who laboured on despite the heavens opening!

DONATE FOR DEMENTIA DAY Over 8,500 people in Gloucestershire have dementia. This figure is set to rise to over 10,500 by 2020. With people living longer with dementia, this means they need more and more care and support services – like those provided by local charity Guideposts Trust. By donating your preloved goods to Guideposts Charity Shop in Tewkesbury, you can help Guideposts continue to provide that care. Guideposts are having a Donate for Dementia Day on Saturday 27 September from 9.30am5pm at the High Street shop. They will also have “Donation Stations” in the Poundland car-park around the back of the shop, and at the Co-op Northway Lane Tewkesbury, between 10am-3pm so it couldn’t be easier to give. At the shop we’ll also be a range of information and someone for

you to talk to about dementia services; there will also be a music therapy demonstration though out the day from Care to Sing led by Penny Powell. Volunteers at the shop will be serving tea and cakes to anyone who will make a donation, or is interested in becoming a volunteer at the shop. People with dementia feel isolated and stigmatised, and reliable, accurate, county-specific information and support can be very hard to obtain. One of Guideposts key information services is Dementia web, a really comprehensive site

where you can get the information, advice and support you need, about all aspects of dementia, local services, groups, events and contacts throughout the county, using their unique Dementia Information Prescription for Gloucestershire. Dementia web provides a true ‘one-stop shop’ for all users of dementia services, and helps caring for someone and coping with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia that little bit easier. You can also phone their 24 hour, 7 days a week national helpline if you want to talk to

someone about any aspect of dementia of any worries you might have. People with dementia and carers in the Stroud area can benefit from Guideposts Music Therapy service. Guideposts also run services for carers of people with dementia, to help them cope and care for themselves by offering respite and a break from their caring, safe in the knowledge that the person they care for is being excellently cared for. A PURRRRFECT DAY A joint Homing Day between Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Cats Protection and Foley Gardens Veterinary Clinic was held at Folly Gardens Vetinary Clinic in Tewkesbury on Sunday 10th August. The day proved a great success with 8 cats finding new homes, and a further 6 possible adoptions. The day involved fosterers of Cats Protection bringing along their cats to give potential adopters an opportunity to find their perfect pet in a relaxed and friendly environment. The charity's volunteers are also available on the day to chat to anyone who may be interested in joining the team. This type of event is an ideal way for the public to meet the cats who looking for a forever home, and see at first

hand the work Cats Protection do. Cats Protection are extremely grateful to the public who attended in large numbers despite the bad weather. Apperley Quarter Marathon 2014

Gloucestershire has one of the highest standard netball leagues in the United Kingdom and the new season sees a new goal for the old Tewkesbury based Challengers first team; their sights set on securing a regional spot by next April. Moving into their third premier division season, Rockets now have the momentum and ability to fly high following on from some solid results last season. Hot on their heels the second team, Flyers, who are also in the premier division, will be aiming to beat some of the other big names in a bid to cement their place in the most elite tier of the league. Hosting a total of 5 senior teams including the newly promoted Jets and Comets, as well as a younger senior squad of up and coming under 18’s; Challengers netball club train on Thursday evenings at Bentham Country Club from 7.159.15pm. Aside from the senior teams, Challengers also have 3 promising junior teams who train at Tewkesbury School at various times during the week. These three teams are open to girls between the ages of 10 and 15 and matches are played on Sundays throughout the September to April season. “Our Open Day has been designed to enable the public to see our incredible helicopters up close, and to meet our life saving aircrew, who do such a fantastic job across the region,” comments Jason Levy, fundraising and marketing director for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. The Open Day, which is free to enter, will run between 10am and 4pm, and in addition to meeting the aircrew and helicopters, visitors to the Strensham airbase will be able to view a range of emergency and military vehicles. also have the chance to take part in a range of family fun activities, and take advantage of a host of refreshments on offer. Plus a number of the charity’s sporting and celebrity ambassadors will be in attendance, as well as Maac the charity mascot and various characters from famous films such as Star Wars and Ironman. Jason concludes: “We always enjoy opening the doors to our Strensham airbase and it’s a great fundraiser, helping our charity to fund further life saving missions across the

Midlands. Our service is of great fascination to a lot number of people and this is the one opportunity in the year they can find out more about what we do. POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

That first day at school Many of you will be getting ready for a child to go to school for the first time, says David Slater, Northway based clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor (and a primary teacher for 20 years). When I was a head teacher I often saw that the parents were more anxious than the children. As a result I thought you may appreciate some thoughts on how you can best prepare your child and yourself for this special day. Give children control over what they can control. Offering simple choices may help calm nerves and get kids excited. For example, if you pick out a new backpack or lunchbox, let your child choose the colour. If you shop for school supplies, let your child find the items in the store and check them off on your list. The day before school starts let your child choose clothes for the first day unless, of course there is a laid down uniform.— but keep veto power! You are always the final arbiter. Ask your child compelling questions. Specific questions will help your child imagine what school will be like and help you talk about the fun stuff and the hard stuff. You might ask, "What do you think the hardest part of school is going to be?" "Is there anything that worries you about starting school?" "What are you really looking forward to?" Describe what will happen on the first day. Keep in mind that a child starting school for the first time or going to a new school may have a hard time imagining what it will be like Talking about the basic sequence of the day will help your child make a mental picture of

what to expect. Kids form images in their minds, and reviewing the process in detail will make things more familiar and less scary on the first day of school. Don’t talk about how much you will miss your child. Don’t let your own worries get in the way. Walk your child into school (or put her on the school bus) and then talk to other parents if you need support. Your child has enough to worry about on the first day without soothing your anxieties. Meet the teacher together and take a look around the new classroom for things you

know your child enjoys If your child gets upset, acknowledge the feeling and ask for suggestions. Ask the teacher for help. If your child won’t let you go, turn to the teacher. She probably has a lot of experience with this. Make a swift exit. Take your cue from the teacher and from your child, but when it’s time to go, go. A quick exit may be more useful to your child than a drawnout goodbye. You can often call school later to check on how a young child is doing. Good luck! David Slater

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE The issue of anti-social behaviour accounts for a high proportion of calls made to the police, writes Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. Anti- social behaviour can be any behaviour which makes you feel harassed, alarmed or distressed and can affect anyone including community groups and businesses. There are many examples some of which are listed here:

Kids from two to ninety two will be delighted to read that the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway welcomes Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends back to Toddington this month. Thomas will be hauling steam trains over the famous Honeybourne Line on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September. As well as all the action on the rails, there is plenty more to see and do to make a day out with Thomas the perfect family activity. There will be live reenactments with the Fat Controller and Thomas, fun and games in the imagination station, face painting, Punch & Judy and magic shows, balloon modelling and a model railway too. Passengers can ride behind Thomas, Daisy and other steam and diesel engines on frequent train services between Cheltenham Race Course, Winchcombe and Toddington. There’s also an opportunity to see the Troublesome Trucks and there will be a special appearance by a London Routemaster Bus, which will offer rides between Toddington and Winchcombe.

Gates open at 9.00am and trains will run every 45 minutes throughout the day. The first train leaves Toddington at 9.30 and at 9.45 from Cheltenham Racecourse. There is ample free car parking at both stations. Advance booking is strongly recommended as demand is always high and admission to the sites during the event is by ticket only. Discount tickets may be ordered in advance via www.gwsr.com Light lunches and refreshments are available in the Flag & Whistle at Toddington and the 1950's style ‘Coffee Pot' café at Winchcombe station. Many trains will also carry a buffet car serving teas, coffees and light snacks. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway won the Cotswold Tourism Award for 2014 and has previously been named Heritage Railway of the Year. It stages a variety of family events throughout the year.

GETTING THE RIGHT HAT-ITUDE ‘Tewkesbury Red Roses’ is a new branch of a national society aims to bring together women want to experience fun and friendship on a more fulfilling level. The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humour and élan. The RHS passion is to promote just that. Initially started as a social organization for women age 50 and over, The Red Hat Society now attracts women in all age demographics through both the "Red Hat" (those over 50) and the "Pink Hat" designations (those under 50). The Red Hat Society has become the international society dedicated to reshaping the way women are viewed in today’s culture. Research has shown that having fun on a regular basis promotes a happy life! And, since we are all growing older day by day, we might as well join redgloved hands and go for the gusto together. Two inaugural meetings of the Tewkesbury Red Roses will be held this month. The first gathering is on Monday 15th September and the second is on Saturday 20th September. “I read that there is a plan to remove the weir from the River Swilgate “It’s not the weir - it’s the road bridge under the Gloucester Road where the problem lie: the archway is too small to take the flow of the water when we have a flood. “It would appear that another part of Tewkesbury’s history is about to be destroyed. “The first bridge across the Swilgate was built in 1791 at the bottom of Ganders Lane.
