WHAT A RESULT!
This summer’s GCSE results have had everyone at Tewkesbury School jumping for joy, following the announcement that a record number of students gained A*- C grades. The school’s head teacher, Gary Watson, said: “We are delighted with this year’s GCSE examination results which represent a record for the school with 84% of students gaining 5A*C grades. Students and teachers shared in the early morning celebrations and both parties
were relieved that the anxious waiting for results was now at an end.
“These young adults are now very well placed to continue their educational journey with the
vast majority choosing to pursue 'A' levels in the school Sixth Form.” Well done everyone!

Fairground photographer Steve Perry, from Ashchurch, is launching a book tracing the history of a Gloucestershire family of Showmen. Steve, who is vice chairman of the Tewkesbury Fair Society, has complied the book using 260 monochrome and colour photographs, some not previously published. ‘Danter’s Travels: 1952-2012’ is a pictorial history of the famous Gloucestershire family of showmen, focusing on their transport over the past sixty years. The book will be launched on Sunday 7th October at the Tewkesbury branch of the Royal British Legion in Church Street. From 11am-4pm, visitors will be able to buy the book and see a dis-
play of Danter fairground transport in miniature. A bar and refreshments will be available too. Billy Danter’s fun fairs have been attending Tewkesbury mop fairs for over fifty years. This year’s mop will take place in the town centre as usual, on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th October. The mop fair will open at 6.30pm on the Tuesday. STREET MARKET SUCCESS Despite the wet weather, this year’s Overbury Street Market raised over £3000 which will go to assist good causes in the Bredon Hill village. Visitors came from all over the region to snap up bargains in the village hall, at the 34th annual event. Locally raised Overbury lamb sold out and business was brisk on all stalls.

A support group for people with dementia and their carers in Tewkesbury has just celebrated its first birthday. The Tewkesbury Memory Café, based at Tewkesbury Day Centre, runs once a month and supports older people with dementia and memory problems and their carers. It gives people a chance to meet others in similar situations, share experiences, make new friends and find out what help is available. Members of the Memory Café, along with staff and volunteers, celebrated the anniversary with a party in the grounds of the day centre with invited guests, including Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council. They enjoyed cakes, kindly donated by Cleeve Hill Nursing Home and made by their chef. Cllr Andrew Gravells, Cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “The Memory Café has gone from strength to strength over the last year. It provides a really valuable service to people with dementia and their carers, giving them advice, support and friendship. If you have memory problems or care for someone who does, I would encourage you to go along to find out what help is available.” One carer who visits the café said: “Lots of my old friends don’t want to know now, not now my husband has dementia. Here, we are all friends, we all understand each other. “It’s wonderful to meet others in the same situation.” The Tewkesbury Memory Café meets on the last Wednesday of every month from 2pm to 4pm at Tewkesbury Day Centre, Station Road. Upper Room The High Altar area of Tewkesbury Abbey will be open to to visitors on Friday 7th September for a view usually only enjoyed by the priests. An impressive collection of decorated and embroidered vestments will be on display, and the Upper Room will also be open. When the Abbey was a monastery the Sacristy was the Abbey’s stronghold and the Sacristan or Treasurer lived in the room above, now the Upper Room. The space is now a small chapel used for private prayer and some services.

SUNLESS GARDENS A garden that receives no direct sunlight (northern aspect) can be a real headache when it comes to planting, writes Ernest Bratt. After all don't plants need sunlight in order to photosynthesise to make food? Well yes, but there are many plants that have adapted to sunless situations and will thrive even preferring the normally cooler conditions. Sunless walls and fences are a particular case in point. A particular genus (group) that respond well are Chaenomeles (ornamental quince). I would recommend C. x superba 'Rowellane' which is magnificent in spring, when the previous year's branches are hidden beneath brilliant red flower clusters. It is best pruned and trained close to a wall or fence. Euonymus fortunei 'Silver Queen', normally grown as a handsome shrub, will rise higher against a wall if trained. It's glossy dark green leaves have irregular creamy margins and consequently 'light up' a dark spot. Then there is Pyracantha rogersiana (Firethorn) with its spiny branches which

Euonymus Silver Queen act as a strong security deterrent when planted on a boundary fence. This strong growing evergreen is clothed in narrow glossy leaves with its flower clusters in early summer replaced by orange-red berries, which the birds love. You do need stout gloves when tieing in and pruning. A particularly good reference book which is well laid out is 'Perfect Plant Perfect Place' by Roy Lancaster. In it you will find recommendations for perennials, climbers and shrubs that
will grow well in any situation. The key is to choose plants that are suitable for your garden, rather than be swayed by those with instant impact, flowers, fruit or foliage. This means taking account of aspect, soil conditions and exposure. There really is a plant suitable for every situation and some research before purchase is well worthwhile. The Tewkesbury Garden Club @ The Abbey opened its 2012/13 season with an event at the Touching Souls Tea Shop, announcing the new programme for the season. The event was a great success and raised over £300 for club funds. There were numerous complimentary remarks about the food, tea and cakes and the pleasant atmosphere. Not only were there discussions on gardening but also about Tewkesbury, in particular the Abbey, and visitors were very impressed by the service. The club wishes to thank the Abbey for providing the facilities and the helpers for doing such a great job. The club meets once per month during the winter and the new programme is full of a variety of subjects to suit many tastes. The first meeting of the new season is on Saturday September 8th 2012 on pelargoniums (geraniums) in the Parish Rooms at the Abbey at 10.30 a.m. for coffee and everyone is welcome. The following meeting is on October 13th with a talk on The Royal Gardens. Subjects at the other meetings include: Snowdrops, Roses, Croome Park (National Trust), Butterflies and a Gardeners Question Time. What has the Olympics taught us? What will be the legacy of the games for the UK? Now the dust has started to settle, what have we learnt from this festival of excellence?, writes Peter Badham. I think the Olympic games have focussed everyone's attention on the value of sport. We now need to build on the UK's passion for sport, and to increase participation in sport within the whole community. According to the Health and Social Care Information Centre 26% of men and women over the age of 16 are obese. 31% of children from the age of 2 to 15 are overweight and 29% obese. Can we can capture the enthusiasm for sport, to help us to be more physically active? Local pharmacies are supporting this campaign with the Change 4life programme. We all need to look at our food/alcohol/physical activity balance and see if we can improve this; your local pharmacy can offer you free advice and support to make any changes. The risks of being

Since its foundation, Army of Angels has raised £500,000 to support ex-troops and their families. Established by an exsoldier, money it raises is used to assist members of the UK Armed Forces who have been injured, physically or mentally, in conflicts around the world. The charity also attempts to aid dependants of those Army, Navy and Air Force personnel who find themselves in need. Army of Angels, which is based at the Cotteswold Dairy industrial Estate, is still looking for volunteers to help its efforts locally. A spokesman for the charity said: “We’d like to give a big thank you to everyone who has helped us so far. Don’t be alarmed if you spot a shark driving around Tewkesbury - it’s just Graham’s customised vehicle - one of thirty cars taking part in the charity ‘Benidorm or
Bust’ rally. Graham will be setting off on September 19th, and hopes to cover the 1500 mile journey in four days. On top of his efforts on the road, during September Graham will be donating £5 for every £100 spent on servicing and repairs in his garage at Croft Farm to the Army of Angels charity.

VINTAGE STUFF Severn Vale Vintage Club is hosting its own country show at Stoke Orchard this month. The event starts at 10am on Saturday 15th September, finishing at midnight. It will also run from 10am until 5pm on Sunday 16th - and it promises to be a great day out for the whole family.

Open the book visits the John Moore Primary School in Walton Cardiff
SPREADING THE WORD It's fun, it's enjoyed by all, it's interactive, and it's spreading throughout the country. It's also an excellent way of passing on some knowledge of the Bible stories, which nearly all older folk know, but not many youngsters. What is it? It's ‘Open the Book.’ Ask most of the children in our primary schools, and they will tell you that groups of storytellers come to their school assemblies usually once a fortnight, armed with the Lion Storytellers' Bible and the manual provided by Open the Book, which sets out how to start and end up each session. There are various basic costumes, and a variety of everyday props. Thanks to the wonderful imagination children have, a few old blue sheets enable the Red Sea to be crossed, and Pharaoh and his army can meet their watery fate. OTB first started in Bedford in 1999, and what began as a local initiative has blossomed into a national movement with 1245 schools involved at the end of April. Nearly all our local primary schools are involved, with five teams operating. In Gloucestershire the number has grown from six teams in 2001 to around 160 now, with over 1000 volunteers involved, representing most of our local churches. AROUND ALDERTON HILL If you’re looking for a ramble that’s not too long but gets the lungs working, then this month’s route has it all. The walk crosses farmland and ascends Alderton Hill, with a fairly strenuous climb. The paths can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. The first part of the route follows a section of the long distance ‘Winchcombe Way,’ so it is well signposted. From the Beckford Road, take the path north along the side of a field towards a gap, and then follow the Winchcombe Way marker diagonally left across a field to a stile in a hedge (1). Keep the same line across the next field to another stile and over a footbridge, taking the route towards the corner of the woods
which are clearly visible on Alderton Hill (2). As the hedge gets closer, look for the stile on the right, go over it and across towards the stile into the woods (3). Follow the green lane through the trees as it skirts around the base of the hill. Deer are abundant here, in a reserve well managed by the Dumbleton Estate. At the end of the wood, go through the gate and across a meadow to reach a five bar

Do not head towards the farm, or take the footpath ahead - but turn right and follow the blue bridleway markers up a steep slope towards another five bar gate. Go through and back into the wood, following the bridleway as it continues
to climb. This path can be very muddy after rain and during the winter months; the climb is fairly arduous! As the path levels out and a field becomes visible on your left, you may catch sight of the landmark Broadway Tower high on the Cotswold scarp to the east. Eventually the bridleway meets a lane coming up from Dumbleton. Turn right, and at the signpost follow the directions to Alderton (5). The steep descent takes you across a lane (6) and then down over a field with the hedge to your left. Go over a footbridge (7) and along the field boundary. Cross a stile into a paddock (8) and through a kissing gate into an alley, which brings you back into Alderton. At the road(9) go right, back to the car.

Sapphire for September September’s birthstone Sapphire is from the Corundum family of stones. Sapphire is synonymous with the colour blue, but corundums come in all colours, pink and yellow also being popular choices. Corundums of any colour, including clear, are known as sapphires except the red variety, which are rubies. Sapphires are perhaps most recognisable when they are inky blue; these are certainly the most abundant in jewellery shops. Varieties such as the Montana Blue from the USA and the cornflower-blue varieties
from Kashmir and Burma are also very popular, but are more rare and expensive. The very rarest kind is the Paparadscha variety which is orange-pink
and found mainly in Sri Lanka. Sapphires have been treasured since the Middle Ages and are traditionally believed to bring the tranquillity of the heavens to the wearer and remove evil from
the mind. Sincerity and truth are also associated with the Sapphire. It is loved by royalty – we are all familiar with the show-stopping sapphire surrounded by diamonds worn originally by Diana, Princess of Wales, and now her daughter-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge. It was with some relief to hear the news of the sale of what seemed to be a rusting corpse of industrialisation. It was closed quite smartly in November 2006 after its purchase by the multinational ADM Milling based in Illinois USA. It came as a shock, not only to the 40 workers who lost their jobs – but the Mill had always seemed to dominate the Town. Christened the Borough Steam Powered Mills, it was, however, only 140 years of age having been built for Tewkesbury’s Healing family of Millers in 1865. The aim was to mill hard American wheat that was flooding across the Atlantic in steam ships. When the Healings started to acquire the land, known as ‘Knaves Acre’ it was already home to several flourmills, five households in 1901, and several public houses such as the Star, formerly the Admiral Benbow. Mills, which were subsequently purchased and demolished, can be seen behind the Healings when it was being constructed. The 18th century engraving, displayed in the Mayor Parlour at the Town Hall, is the only evidence of when the site pre-Healings was Tewkesbury Quay where boats transhipped their goods at the junction of the Avon and Severn.

STEAMED UP ABOUT THOMAS Children of all ages will make a bee line for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire steam railway later this month. Thomas the Tank Engine, always one of the award-winning heritage line’s most popular visitors, will be running trains on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September. The fun begins from Cheltenham Racecourse, where Thomas and his friends will be hauling trains to Winchcombe for an action-packed day out. There will also be a magic show, Punch & Judy and model railway exhibitions - as well as a chance to meet Sir Topham Hat. Gates open at 9.00am both days, and there is plenty of free parking. Coal carts can be seen along side the Severn Trows. Healings were attracted to the site because of the building of the Quay branch railway in 1844. Healings regarded the location of their Mill amongst the port buildings as unacceptable and so gradually any other activity was gradually excluded. However, as late as 1932 people managed to swim off their “Town Quay”. The 1987 building of the footbridge across the Mill Avon effectively sealed off the Mill – except for the complicated ‘rights of way’ for farm machinery and grazing animals, which may have limited the value of this asset. The Mill, built to deal with U.S. imports, was abandoned in its turn by the forces of U.S. Globalisation.

WELL DONE, TO THE FRIENDS LEARN TO PLAY THE FLUTE OF VICTORIA GARDENS On Sunday 12th August, the sun shone and the flowers glistened as Tewkesbury celebrated the installation of the jubilee arches in Victoria Gardens. The idea to link Queen Victoria’s and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilees in this way was originally suggested by Friends of Victoria Gardens at the Open Day in 2011 and local people have been so enthusiastic in their support that just one year later all three arches have been commissioned. The first two are in place and the Mayor, Ken Powell, performed the official opening ceremony. About two hundred people then enjoyed teas, cakes and ices in
the gardens whilst being entertained by Waytes and Measures. Spokesperson Rosemary Wherrett said, “There are lots of people in the town who wish us well and it’s great to see so many of them here this afternoon – and the weather has been kind to us, for once.” Photographs by Jack Rosemary Wherrett

DEER IN THE DRINK Our story this month is another river rescue involving a deer call-out, just downstream from last month’s gannet and the help of Bredon Sailing Club, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. The call came in about a deer lying in a field making no attempt to run away from a couple out for a walk. Calls like this often turn out to be fawns, which are left alone in long grass or undergrowth during daylight hours while mum goes off to feed. In these cases the advice is to leave them alone as this is a perfectly natural situation. However, we soon established that this was an adult male roe deer and there was no doubt that it was in trouble as someone had walked right up to it and touched it – you would-
n’t be able to get anywhere near a healthy adult deer, it would be off like a shot. The deer was outside Bredon, just north of the Sailing Club and when James arrived at the scene and met the caller, he found the distressed deer still on the ground, kicking out in fear.
As James approached the deer, it managed to get to its feet and made a bee-line for the river, leapt straight in to the water and immediately swam to the other side, where it just about managed to get onto the bank where it collapsed again. James was now in need of a boat so he enlisted the help of Bredon Sailing Club, to whom we are very grateful, and was able to cross the river, get the collapsed deer into the boat, back across the river and on to dry land. When he was examined back at the hospital we discovered that he
had been shot with a high velocity rifle and he had sustained major internal damage. Despite all our efforts, he died shortly after he was admitted. We deal with a number of cases of wild animals that have been shot every year at Vale, mostly victims of air rifle shootings. And of course, there are a few that regard the whole thing as a ‘skive’. So, is there a good side? Yes, there most certainly is! A good number of these pupils will have gained a valuable insight into their respective futures and we were very lucky to have one of the best! So let me give Alistair Jones, (our placement at Natton Garage), a big pat on the back, for being a star performer. He dived in with a very positive and mature attitude, which belied his fourteen years. He was always busy; I never saw him standing around and every time I glanced in his direction, his head was buried under a bonnet or he was ‘spannering’ the underside of a car, under the watchful eye of my staff; a very pleasant lad on all fronts. JOY TO EMBARK ON A COAST TO COAST ADVENTURE On 14th April next year Joy Rainey and her team will leave Los Angeles to drive coast to coast across the USA, a distance of 2,826 miles in a 109 year old Oldsmobile horseless carriage, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Joy (pictured left),who has her vehicles worked on at Greenings Garage in Alderton, is better known for her participation in speed hill climb events across the UK. Gloucestershire’s Prescott Hill is one of the circuits where Joyce has raced against the clock, and more recently she has completed long distance rallies with her co-driver Trevor Hulks. This Coast to Coast adventure was to be the couple’s most challenging, however sadly in 2010 Trevor was diagnosed with cancer and passed away.after considerable soul searching and encouragement from friends and family, Joy has decided that it feels like unfinished business. STRINGS ARE SQUASH LEAGUE CHAMPIONS Last month the Strings Squash team, based at Perform Fitness in Ashchurch Road, Tewkesbury, defied the odds to win the Gloucestershire squash summer league by two points. The Strings team entered the match trailing the league leaders by sevenpoints. With a maximum of twenty points on offer, it meant they had to win by at least eight points to win the title. The task was made harder when their opponents imported a professional player at number one. The odds were stacked heavily against the Strings team, but after four hours of play and five intense matches, they came out on top and won by nine points to be crowned the Gloucestershire Squash Summer League Champions. The number of spectators at the matches was impressive and everyone could feel the pressure as the competition progressed. The Strings team would like to thank everyone who supported the team. So I would say that the most powerful and
effective way to improve the world around you, is to improve yourself. The best way to bring real value into your life, is to create, real value for others. That is true satisfaction. When you admire and compliment you will be admired and complimented. When you seek to understand, you will be understood, and when you listen thoughtfully, you will be heard. In guitar lessons, Trevor believes the most important aspect is to enjoy the playing. MILL’S NEW OWNERS CONSIDER OPTIONS As revealed in last month’s Tewkesbury Direct, the former Healings’ Flour Mill has been sold. Its new owners are the St Francis Group, who have purchased the mill buildings and three other adjacent sites in Quay Street (above). Sherdons will be running their second Annual Charity Competition in aid of the Midlands Air Ambulance on Tuesday 25th September 2012. Teams of four Players will be welcomed on arrival at the Tredington Golf Centre with a cup of coffee and a Bacon Baguette before they take to the course for an 18 hole Stableford competition. Dinner and the presentation of an amazing array of prizes will follow around 6.30pm. A and E Fire Equipment have once again kindly agreed to be main co-sponsors of the event, with Sherdons Golf enabling the day to be organised at a cost of £40 per player or £140 per team. SPORTS CENTRE OPEN DAY Tewkesbury School’s sports centre is holding an open day on Sunday 16th September. There will be an opportunity to view the facilities and see the range of sports on offer - including Olympic events such as basketball, taekwondo, tennis, swimming and canoeing. A wide range of fitness classes is also on offer. There will be a bouncy castle and a junior football tournament, which kicks off at 9.30am. The centre, in Ashchurch Road, will be open from 10am to 4pm.
