‘Sugarmoney’ by Jane Harris Paperback, £8.99 It is always a pleasure to discover a book, one not on the "to read list", but selected by chance, and then found it to be a success. This is what happened for me with this novel, which is based in the West Indies in 1763. It is about two brothers, half castes who are sent back to Grenada, from Martinique, where they have been treated reasonably by the Friars. One of which, Father Cleophas, is however somewhat two faced, and deceives them about their mission. Both brought up in Grenada under the French, they had been split up but eventually reunited after the English acquired Grenada. Their mission is to convince their excolleagues to move to rejoin their previous French masters; Cleophas providing a dubious Power of Attorney the brothers cannot fully decipher. Elder brother Emile, in his twenties, cannot read, Lucien who is around 12 knows some letters so the deceit works. They voyage over in a small boat with an apparent deaf and dumb Captain, who is not all he seems, and he becomes a major secondary figure later in the book. The brothers are the main characters along with Emile's childhood sweetheart, Celeste who he was forced to leave behind when he was resettled without notice. How their reunion goes is part of the story line, as are a mixture of fellow slaves who they are tasked to convince to return with them to Martinique. The

We have lots!” events that happen keep you turning the pages, in someway it is an adventure novel, but there are some very realistic descriptions of the cruelties enforced by the English, but these are essential to the structure of the story. What surprised me about this read was that whilst it is written very cleverly in a style of patois English, with some French, it took just a few chapters to get into the groove of that text, and readers should not be put off by that, as it is very readable. The main story all takes place over a few days either side of Christmas, and how the Friar's plan influences the future lives of Lucien, Emile and Celeste is told with momentum, sprinkled with a broad mixture of other characters who add dimension to this very good book. Something a little bit different, and I was very glad that I saw it written up for it's historical relevance, and I should mention, it is fiction based on real events, so all the more meaningful. Pregnancy Yoga group celebrates ten years This month marks the tenth anniversary of a local yoga class that has been quietly supporting hundreds of Gloucestershire women, over the years, through pregnancy and birth. Started in September 2008 by Sandra Lewis, Yoga for Pregnancy & Birth has run weekly in Tewkesbury ever since. Welcoming women from 14 weeks of pregnancy, Sandra’s class gives pregnant women a friendly, safe and nurturing space in which they can give time to focus on themselves and their growing baby. The class allows expecting mums to meet, share experiences, learn gentle yoga movements, breathing, visualisation and relaxation techniques that will support and empower them

through their pregnancy, birth and beyond. “I think it is incredibly powerful, positive and motivating for women to hear what someone ‘just like them’ from the class has experienced, said Sandra. “I love how over the years so many women have formed ‘Yoga Mums’ groups. Hubert Parry - A Life in Photographs Local author, Michael Trott has produced a lavishly illustrated outline biography of the life of Hubert Parry, the British composer, probably most famous to everyone as the composer of ‘Jerusalem,’ the words of which are from one of William Blake's poems. Asked what prompted him to write the book Michael replied; “I realised that no introduction to him had ever been written and what Jerrold Northrop Moore had so ably done for Elgar in 1971 could and ought to be done for Parry.” Michael's elegantly produced volume full of mainly black and white photographs of the composer's life very much depicts Parry and where “his feet” walked, not only in the world of music and academia, but also as a sailor, sportsman and an early devotee to the car, holding the honour of being one of the first motorists fined for speeding! Highnam Court was

his family and childhood home which he later inherited upon the death of his father and where Gloucester meetings of the Three Choirs Festival would then be held. Parry, as Squire, also became a local Justice of the Peace. His father was a benefactor to the community, and to Tewkesbury Abbey where he painted, without charge, the decorations on the roof of the nave. Michael records how Parry excelled not only as a composer and historian, but was teacher to Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, while also Director of the Royal College of Music and Professor of Music to Oxford University. Michael had become

interested in Parry when, exploring Elgar's music in the 1970s; “I bought an LP recording of Elgar's The Music Makers and found Parry's 'Blest Pair of Sirens' on the 'B' side. This work knocked me sideways; it still does and remains undoubtedly my favourite Parry composition. “Realising that he was a local composer, I became interested in Parry the man and soon saw what a tremendous personality he was and how so many people were inspired by him. Michael Trott is giving an audio-visual presentation entitled “Hubert Parry: The Development of a Great Personality “ to Tewkesbury U3A members on Monday 8th October at the Baptist Church Hall in Station Road at 10.30am, where copies of his book will be on sale. ELECTRIC BIKES now available from £999.99 The house (A) was known as “Old Turnpike House” in 1885 but was there from 1791 and we now think there were gates there in medieval times, writes John Dixon.

The more distinctive Turnpike House on the Ashchurch Road was built later. From at least the 1920s the house was known as Inglenook (B) - its name plaque was rescued when it was demolished. The house masked a huge ‘brownfield site’, which is now home to many families living in a mixed development of 17 units of houses and flats. In addition there was Rosemead – there were two tragic deaths there in 1905 and 1937 - and gradually this area and all the land behind was purchased by builders and consolidated into what is now (C) Barton Mews. Was it builder D I Pitt who had eventually bought the land, demolished Inglenook and built the modern development? Perhaps the family would confirm.

Last year the ‘flu vaccination programme in pharmacy and GP surgeries gave patients an overall protection of 15% against flu, writes Peter Badham. However the protection rate for over 65s was lower than the average at only 10.1%. The Department of Health has been working hard to see how this vulnerable age group can be better protected,

with the result that this year there will be special vaccine specifically for this age group. The predications are that this will result in 30,000 less GP visits, 2,000 less hospital visits and 700 less deaths. The two vaccines are being made available now; please contact your pharmacy or go surgery for an update. Last year 15,000 people died from flu, which

was significantly higher than the previous year of 8,000. We will have to wait and see how this new vaccine works, in cutting the incidents of flu and the reducing the death rate. Peter Badham

Dave’s Tuck shop raises thousands for Charity Dave Hodges, is the Sales Manager at Te w k e s b u r y ’ s Cotteswold Dairy, and he has been running an innovative, and very productive fund raiser for local charities. After taking part in a back up team for a charity bike ride three years ago, Dave was left with a quantity of surplus chocolate bars and refreshments, so he took them back to the Dairy, where he sold them to members of staff. Since then Dave has spent his own time stocking up on new lines of snacks and a queue has been making tracks to his door. During “Exercise Grouse” members were tasked with locating and checking one of their cruisers which had been hidden up the River Avon between Twyning and Bredon. Then a party had to search the surrounding river banks and fields to find two hidden bodies - one of which was under an upturned dinghy. There was also a live casualty who pretended to be injured and was suffering from hypothermia and required first aid. Manor Players Return To The Roses Its title may be Scrooge! The Musical, but Tewkesbury’s Manor Players are anything but stingy in the planning of their latest production, which is without a doubt one of the biggest amateur productions ever seen on The Roses’ stage to date. It’s been a fair few years since the group last appeared in the town’s theatre, and earlier this year it was felt by all parties that it would be a fantastic idea to bring one of the town’s longest running theatrical groups back in to The Roses. Originally formed in 1969, the Manor Players performed many shows at The Roses from 1975 (when the theatre first opened) right through to the millennium. The Roses has steadily built up relationships with various community groups over the last few years; particularly since its 2015 redevelopment which saw its cafe and bar areas brought up to date. This latest new

partnership is one of the most exciting yet as the Manor Players prepare for their latest festive offering.

MITTON W.I. Our guest for the September meeting was Charlotte Phillips, whose talk entitled 'Plus Size Model/Pageant Queen', was a great inspiration to us all. She spoke of her journey from her first foray into modelling when a friend encouraged her to join a modelling course a few years ago, up to the present day. She entered her first pageant in 2015 and has never looked back. She is now training to be a life coach, following her support and campaigning for MIND. Basically she is encouraging us all not to take everyone else at face value, and also to believe in ourselves, whatever we want for ourselves and not to accept what others always expect of us. you meet a bridleway coming up from Didcot Farm (4). Turn left and follow the track as it climbs towards the edge of a wood. Go through the gate (5) and follow the obvious path as it climbs steeply to the top of the hill. As you reach the summit the path levels out and there are good views to the Cotswolds. Pass through the farm gate (6) on to a track on your left which leads to Hill Farm across broad, open fields. Go through the gate to the right of the farm (7) and descend on the tarmac road through Dumbleton Park. The Hall, now an hotel, may be seen on your left. At the bottom of the park, go through the main gate and walk past some estate cottages (8), and take the lane ahead back to the church.

Take six sweet apples, place in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Stand for one minute before draining/drying. Push a wooden skewer through each apple to the core, and stand on a non-stick paper lined baking tray. To make the toffee you will need a medium saucepan and a sugar thermometer. Add 300g golden caster sugar to the pan, then add 3 tbsp golden syrup and 5 tbsp water. Mix together gently (without stirring) and heat the mixture on a low heat until the sugar dissolves into a

syrup. Boil mixture until it reaches 140 degrees C on the thermometer. Taking great care (the mixture will be very hot) dip each apple into the caramel and twirl it to ensure it is evenly coated. If you wish to coat the apple with nuts, hundreds and thousands or similar, do so now. Then place on the baking tray and leave to cool for at least half an hour before enjoying.

Sometimes they let go and ‘free-fall’ onto their host. Ticks are adapted to feed for long periods, they can remain securely attached for days at a time. The bite is painless to help keep their presence undetected. It’s important to note that ticks typically require 24-48 hours of feeding before they can successfully transmit infections. So prompt removal is critical. It’s best to use tweezers or a tick removal tool to take off ticks, however, if you are not 100%

sure you have got the full tick off, don’t panic, a disembodied head or biting apparatus attached to the skin won’t be able to transmit disease or move. It may irritate the skin and will usually fall out on it’s own. Petroleum jelly, gasoline, nail polish or alcohol, all used with the intension of suffocation, these home remedies don’t work. Researchers say that ticks can survive long periods of time without air. It’s best to reduce the risk of disease by physically removing the tick as soon as possible. Chemical control is a popular form of tick control, by squeezing a pipet on the back of the animal’s neck. Frontline works by the active ingredient, Fipronil, being stored in the oil glands under the skin. It then self-distributes continuously for one month onto your pet’s hair and skin through the hair follicles. Fleas and ticks are killed by contact with your pet’s haircoat.

Keeping your pet calm when fireworks light up the skies in November Fireworks can make celebrations exciting for us, but they’re not always quite as much fun for our pets. There are things we can do to help keep them calmer and safer. It’s up to you as their owner to help them cope and make sure their fireworks nights are as easy as they can be. Does my pet need help coping with fireworks? Generally, most pets will struggle with fireworks. Animals have acute senses: for them every flash and bang can be unexpected and alarming. Think about how your pet reacts to fireworks; or if you haven’t had them when there’s been fireworks, how they react to loud noises. Do they show any of the following behaviours? Cats and Dogs ● Cowering or hiding behind the sofa ● Trying to run away or escape (this can include digging up the carpet) ● Soiling the house ● Restlessness, e.g. pacing and panting for dogs, and over grooming (cats) ● Barking incessantly (dogs only!) If they show any of these signs, your pet might need help coping

A Village in the Town Hall Gardens Few people now visit the gardens at the rear of the Town Hall, possibly many do not even know they are there. You can gain access from Back of Avon, through the somewhat stark American Garden, to the rather beautiful Town Hall plot, with mature trees and flowerbeds. But back in the 1960’s these gardens were a busy tourist attraction, housing a model village, a putting green and crazy golf, whilst the Town Hall basement contained a model fairground and railway. The village was bought by the “old” Tewkesbury Borough Council in 1963 for the sum of £600, about £12,000 in today’s money from Essex model maker John Fenwick. It wasn’t really a model village like that in Bourton; just a collection of models, most of buildings in the town. The largest was the Abbey, but there was also the Bell, Out of the Hat, Nodding Gables and

the museum. Visitors were charged six old pence to view it. The village wasn’t universally popular. Alderman Knight, a leading member of the council, called it "an absolutely mad idea from beginning to end, and a complete waste of money.” It seems to have been popular at first but, for reasons unknown, possibly vandalism, possibly fashion, it was abandoned in the Town Hall basement along with the fairground. And there it seems to have stayed until about 1978, when the better preserved models were transferred to Tewkesbury Museum, but not before suffering

one final indignity; the backs were cut off to convert them into wall displays! The damaged models, which were largely made of asbestos cement, were disposed of as hazardous waste. Several of the models are on permanent display at the museum; it is surprising how different buildings look when seen from above or in

Tewkesbury Chair Challenge 2018 Last year, the inaugural exhibition of decorated and themed chairs created by local residents took place in Tewkesbury Abbey. One of the organisers, Amanda Thomas, wrote in to tell us of this years event. DEERHURST FLOWER FESTIVAL The biennial flower festival held over the three days of the August bank holiday was a great success despite “washout weather” on the Sunday, writes Anne Springett. The theme of “A Moment in Time” made for a very varied display - from Beatrix Potter’s anniversary, The ending of the 1st World War, beginning of the NHS, Concorde’s last flight, to the Eruption of Vesuvius and many other interesting themes.

Many people worked hard to put this wonderful weekend together, which is enjoyed by both visitors and helpers alike. We thank all those who visited as the money raised enables the church to remain open.

Right from the start it was clear that we were in for a treat, when Sandy appeared from behind the screen dressed as Jane Austen, wearing a beautiful and elegant pale cream dress complete with matching bonnet. She got a round of applause even before the talk began! Sandy has an engaging personality and is extremely knowledgeable about the City of Worcester and she took us on a virtual tour of the city where she is a guide for visitors, describing in detail and showing many pictures of each of the historic and fascinating buildings on our “route” including the factory which still produces Lea and Perrins

Worcestershire sauce in Midland Road. Apart from her indepth knowledge of the history of the buildings, she is also an authority on the history of the City. It was the site of the Battle of Worcester which took place in September 1651 and proved to be the final battle in the English Civil War. Sandy also produced some surprising facts about the origin of words in common use today which originated in the 17th century. For instance men who were expected to do heavy manual work were known as “lay brothers” who became known in today’s parlance as “labourers”. She also told us about the history

of the glove-making industry and produced some rather malodorous facts about the industry. It seems that human urine was used in leather processing and the poorest people in Worcester used to sell it to the factory. You can imagine the words which came to describe these unfortunates having to sell their bodily fluids to make ends meet! Not Just About Repairs! Our Star Repair this month was brought to us by Bobby (aged 6). Instead of throwing away his favourite broken Buzz Lightyear he brought along a second Buzz and asked if they could be made into one. This was quite a challenge as although the figures looked very similar, they were quite different in detail. Our repairers love a challenge and our team of toy surgeons began to operate. Surgery like this cannot be rushed but we have a lovely cafe waiting area with drinks and cakes provided by Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth.

In last months issue, we featured an old cooking range that had been discovered behind paneling, in a town centre shop. We asked readers the question of where did they think it may be. The answer is the Cross House at Tewkesbury’s Cross. The use of the building is changing to become Tewkesbury’s first Micro Pub, The Cross House Tavern. The interior of the former craft and gift shop is being restored, to include many of the distinctive features of its many past uses. Due to open soon, the business will be selling a wide range of Real Cask Ales, Stouts, Ciders and Perrys, all on tap to drink or take away. Observers have commented, that the premises are quite small, not so, like all old buildings there are many small rooms and comfy corners to make this new business a reflection of olden times.

LILLEYS ALLEY In about 1805, Mrs Mary Lilley’s kept a china shop on Church Street, near the Cross, and has been immortalised in the name of the alley behind it; still one of Tewkesbury’s gems. Mrs Lilley’s shop was once an entrance to one half of what is now Packer’s Court, though ‘Replay’. administered by his family. This led to a dispute with Lechmere’s Bank who called in a mortgage. It eventually escalated to a case in the Court of Chancery and the sale of the estate in order to pay Lechmere’s Bank and the heavy legal costs which they had incurred. Among the properties advertised for auction in 1870 were ‘two capital front dwelling houses with the brewhouse and stable in Lilley’s Alley’, the one lately occupied by William Morse (butcher) and the other tenanted by Thomas Matty (fishmonger) (these together are now ‘Replay’); Two commodious cottages adjoining, one lately in the occupation of William Morse and used as a stable, and the other untenanted; a convenient cottage late in the occupation of William Baldwin, also situate in Lilley’s Alley but now void.’ Two years later, the front house was occupied by John Gannaway, butcher, at £18 pa and Mr Haines, hairdresser, at £12. In 1875, Mr C. Dowswell bought the property and the two cottages behind for £259; the cottages accounting for £34 of

that. The alley suffered from the same problems as most of the alleys; overcrowding and poor water. Because of contamination, the well was ordered to be pumped out, twice, in 1877 but it was still causing concern in 1937. The pump was a feature of the alley captured in photographs and paintings, but it had been removed by 1938, when a piped water supply was laid on. In 1911, the residents petitioned the Council for a gas lamp, and this was granted. The lamp was not always reliable (or maybe the lamp-lighter wasn’t) and in 1930 it was replaced by an electric one. In common with the other alleys stretching down to the Swilgate Road, there were tragedies with young

children drowning. The safety logic seemed to be that there were always children playing there, so help would quickly be sought if someone fell in. It worked in 1904 when Mr Deveraux’s five-year-old daughter was rescued by Stephen Healy, working in the slaughterhouse in Ancill’s Alley nearby, but not for four-year-old Mary Ann Maycock, who drowned there in 1951. These alley tragedies were the reason why fundraising for an indoor swimming pool was so important to residents.

Lilleys Alley Lilley’s Alley didn’t suffer the wholesale demolition of the postwar clearance programme of other alleys. Cottages were consolidated; the two cottages sold in 1875 are now Tudor House.

‘Claypipes’, further down the Alley, incorporates another cottage. Until 1972, the alley was almost unchanged from the Victorian version. In 1971, the Lilley’s Alley Clearance Area Compulsory Purchase Order was issued. This was to enable the construction of a block of flats at the bottom of the alley. The purchase swallowed up Yew Tree Cottages in their little court and changed Ancill’s Alley into a private court entered from the Berkeley Arms side door. It also involved the demolition of the three cottages at the Swilgate end of the Alley. Though the character of the alley changed, the developers limited the damage by using sympathetic materials, such as blue bricks for paving. Pigot’s Directory of 1830 lists Miss Cecilia Cooper, proprietor of an academy in Lilley’s Alley. Her writings suggest that this was the house at the Swilgate end. She was a poet of the romantic era, and in 1820 had published a poem entitled ‘The Battle of Tewkesbury’. This, and her school, are now distant memories, her home being a victim of redevelopment.

Lots of happy people and a beautiful village green These ingredients came together on Bank Holiday Monday for the annual TRAC (Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex) fete. Hundreds of villagers and visitors came to the fete and enjoyed listening to local group "Bucket List", who very kindly stepped in at the last minute to entertain everyone, despite a couple of their members still being on holiday. We also had some friendly tug-of-war and very competitive eggthrowing! After perusing the delights of the car boots there were many stalls to visit around the green. An opportunity to get rid of your pent-up frustration on the scout's "Plate Smash" or to test your skill on the skittle alley and ladder game. We had a range of transport attractions with Warners and Suzuki St Peters, showing off their 68 plates and a miniature traction engine and a horse drawn carriage both giving rides around the green. One lucky winner scooped £100 as the first prize in the raffle ahead of more than 30 other

winners of some great prizes. A barbecue catered for the hungry and the bar on the green

Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis (to give it its official name) is a very painful and restrictive condition of the shoulder. The reason for it occurring is still unknown. There are certain groups of people who are more likely to get it although it is a condition that really can effect anyone. Sadly, once you have had it, it is not uncommon for it to return in either the same or the opposite side. There are many treatments for it ranging from invasive surgery to gentle manual therapy. The reason there are so many treatments is because everyone responds differently to different therapies. There are three stages of frozen shoulder, these can be broken down to freezing, frozen and thawing. The condition can be treated at any of these stages. The important thing to remember is that this condition will get better. It needs to go through the stages but therapy can help limit the pain

and maintain as much range of movement as possible whilst the condition eases. Exercises must be done through any of the stages in order to maintain as much range of movement as possible. Two Rivers

MIDLAND AIR AMBULANCE OPEN DAY Remember the Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival of last month? Of course you do; this is the show put on by the Rotary Club of Tewkesbury to raise money for charity – and in case you were wondering, this is what we do with the money raised: The photo is of Roger Pemberton, Chief Executive of the Midland Air Ambulance Charitable Trust receiving a cheque from Tewkesbury Rotary for £6,000. This was flown in by helicopter to their open day and presented by Anthony Stockman, (last year’s Rotary President). The club has just presented ‘Mary’s Meals’ a cheque for £3,000 and a further £3,000 is also going to the Sue Ryder Hospice Foundation. We’ve provided Key Stage one reading books for Chance Street Primary School, donations to ‘Dogs for good’, ‘Kids Out’ , the new Tewkesbury Wheelchair bus, Tewkesbury-InBloom and many others. And don’t forget Rotary’s fabulous fireworks display, which takes place on Saturday

3rd November on the Abbey Lawns. We thank all those who have supported our shows and hope you’ll all continue to do so in the future, as this is our primary source of income to support our ever growing list of charities. So why not come and join us; Rotary is always looking for new members. “Welcome Home” Pte. H. J. Waylen who died of illness, contracted on the Salonika Front, 2nd May 1917 Wednesday, 10th October 2018 at 11.00 hrs Tewkesbury Borough Cemetery Pte. Waylen, of the 5th Glosters, after dying of TB caught whilst fighting in Salonika, was buried in the WWI Section of the Borough Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

In May 2018 the CWGC acceded to a request to manufacture and installed an official headstone in that section. The Royal British Legion has kindly agreed to organise the ceremony with the participation of the successor regiment, the Rifles. The Rev. Charles Whitney has agreed to act as padré for the ceremony. Pte Waylen’s only living relative, John Sidebotham, will join us all the way from his home in Australia and we shall be honoured by the presence of the Tewkesbury Mayors and a Manager from CWGC. Members of the public are cordially invited to welcome home Pte. Waylen but we advise that parking at the Cemetery will not be possible.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater Are you a good judge of people or situations? writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. It is so easy, is it not, to jump to conclusions which are often totally ill formed because we may have been too hasty. It is easy to think that an experience in our life that was not the most pleasant would turn out to be exactly the same if we went for the experience a second time. It may do, but equally, it may be totally different. There once lived a man in the town who had four children. He wanted them to grow up with a balanced view of life and able to see things clearly. What he didn't want was for them to make hasty judgements. To learn the skill of judging things properly he devised a quest for them to take in turn. He told them of the location of a tree. Nothing special. Just a tree that he knew about. The strange thing was that the tree was about 300 miles away and he wanted each child to visit it in turn. The first went in Winter. The second in

THE CHANGING SEASONS Spring. The third in Summer and, finally, the fourth in Autumn. Each child did this and on the return of the final child the father called all his children together. They sat in a circle and their father said that he wanted each one in turn to describe to the others what they had seen in as much detail as they could. The first child described a tree that was ugly shaped with bare, twisted branches. No leaves. No fruit. In fact it looked near enough dead to him. The father nodded but said nothing. The second child was waving his hand in the air and saying that things weren't like that at all. He saw a tree that was covered in fresh green buds. Not dying but full of the promise of new life with all of the green buds on its branches. The third child, as you might have guessed by now, argued that the first two descriptions

had been totally wrong. What he described was a tree absolutely covered in blossom that made the surrounding air smell so wonderful. He had to admit that he had never seen anything so beautiful before in the whole of his life. It was so perfect in every way. The fourth child laughed and said that he didn't know what the other three had been looking at. The tree that he had seen was laden with the most beautiful, succulent fruit. To him the tree was so full of life and had so much to offer to the people who visited it to take advantage of the fruit that it was freely offering. The father laughed and went on to explain to his children that in fact each one of them was right. Each one was right in the description given. OK, they were all very different but they were all equally true as then fact was that each child had seen the tree during only one season of its life. “You can't judge a tree, or more importantly a situation or a person, by only one season, one meeting, one exchange. The full truth of what they are or who they are can only be measured over an extended period of time not on one single encounter. If you give up when it is winter you miss the promise of spring, the

beauty of the summer and the harvest of the autumn. It may be that your first encounter is the

equivalent of a difficult season. A time when the person concerned is experiencing difficulty. But this can change. The

The third annual Cotswolds Food & Drink Fayre heads for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway this month, with up to fifty exhibitors offering a taste of local produce.
