New Tewkesbury Calendar is Launched A new Tewkesbury Calendar for 2014 has just been launched by local photographer Jack Boskett. Jack, a former Tewkesbury School student, set up business in the town when he was nineteen. ECOLOGY OF OUR HAM The Severn Ham is one of the most impressive water meadows in England. For over a thousand years it has been an important source of water and grazing land for Tewkesbury. The Ham is a registered common, an area of natural beauty and an important local habitat for flora and fauna. The John Moore Museum has a significant collection of natural history items reflecting the wildlife and habitat of The Severn Ham. As part of the British Ecological Society Centenary, the John Moore Museum has provided a series of events, including exhibitions, walks, talks and education workshops focused on the Severn Ham. An exhibition on the flora and fauna of the Ham runs at the museum in Church Street until 31st October. Many would say that Benjamin Britten was the greatest British composer of the 20th Century and in this anniversary year the CSO will be joined by the City of Bristol Choir, the junior choir of St Mary’s, Westbury-on-Trym and choir of the Leckhampton Primary to perform School Britten’s Spring Symphony. In addition the lineup will include three dissoloists, tinguished Rachel Chapman, Diana Moore and Richard Edgar-Wilson, all artists at the top of their profession. Eddie the Eagle gets in a spin for charity Over fifty people were joined by Olympic ski jumping legend Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards at last month's charity outdoor Spinathon. Held at Tewkesbury Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club, the event raised over £8,000 for the St James' Place Foundation. The participants, including Eddie Edwards and members of the hotel team, powered through six hours of back-to-back spin classes. They were led by instructors from the hotel, where the event has been taking place for the past five years. The event, organised annually by Steve Probert & Associates, raises money for The St. Place James’s Foundation projects including Cherishing the Combating Children, Cancer and Supporting
with the Hospices, organiser matching the final figure £1 for £1. The fourth running of the Apperley Quarter Marathon since its re-introduction saw nearly 300 runners compete over a multi-terrain course starting and ending at Apperley Cricket Club. In spite of some nasty weather forecasts, a beautiful day saw runners aged from 11 to over 65 tackle a varied route, which included a substantial run down by the River Severn and the pleasure of running through the churchyard of the Anglo-Saxon church in Deerhurst. The race was in aid of Apperley Cricket Club " Trophy winners and the Wallace and Gromit Appeal. HOP POLE’S HISTORY HIT
A memorial bench is to be unveiled at the White Bear on Saturday 12th October. Regulars at the Tewkesbury pub have been raising money to commemorate Robbie Rivers, a regular at the White Bear, who died suddenly last year at the age of 39 - leaving two young children. The annual chilli cooking competition will be taking place at the pub on the same day.
The historical Royal Hop Pole Heritage tours proved to be a resounding success last month. Ably lead by a knowledgable Emma Shakesheff, there were three separate tours and the number of attendees reached 69. Proof that this ancient coaching inn has many stories to tell. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We were very to welcome pleased Pietro and Adriano who are both teachers of Maritime Studies at a school in Ortona in Italy. “Maritime Studies are taught to students between the ages of 14 and 19 in a state school which is our equivalent of a merchant navy train-
ing school. “The two teachers had been here for two weeks learning specialised English under a EU funded professional training course.” As well as giving their visitors plenty of hands on practical experience in boat handling and the use of the VHF radio, the visit also included a trip up the River Avon and through Strensham Lock, which gave them an opportunity to study exactly how a lock operates. They were also shown the charts of the local waters around the Bristol Channel area where Severn Unit members train. Their visit was rounded off with a typical afternoon tea served aboard Minerva.

The Avro Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew over RAF Defford’s Heritage Open Weekend last month Its flypast paid tribute to the men and women who served at the base in the 1940s and those who gave their lives in airborne radar research. Thousands attended the event which coincided with the National Trust’s Open Days at Croome Park.

THIRTY YEARS OF VALE WILDLIFE HOSPITAL
On June 8th 2014 it will be thirty years since I took in an injured tawny owl as a favour to a local vet. Little did I know what that one favour would lead to, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Word of mouth led to a trickle of wildlife casualties being brought to my house in Cropthorne. The trickle didn’t take very long to turn into a and within torrent, about 5 years what had once been a nice garden, filled with flower borders and trees, had turned into a maze of pens, aviaries and hutches. moved to We Beckford, our present site, in November 1992. The area had been used for fruit-picking and was literally a ploughed field when we bought it. Before we actually moved on, and with the help of some amazing friends and volunteers we prepared the area, sowed the whole site with grass seed (all by hand), dug trenches for water pipes etc and laid a concrete base for the mobile home. We have now been in Beckford for over twenty years and the site has changed beyond recognition in that time. A further four and a half acres of land was bought for us by a generous businessman not long after we moved here and we have the use of an adjoining twenty acres of land which is owned by one of our staff. We have been in our purpose built hospital since 2001 and, despite several worrying times when funds have dipped to almost nothing, we have managed to carry on our work year on year and have also managed to build countless new enclosures and aviaries. Our facilities also now include a separate building for larger animals complete with outside, grassed enclosures, a mammal rearing unit, away from the noise and activity of the hospital, used for the rearing of fox and badger cubs plus other animals that are easily imprinted and our latest addition, a Hedgehog Unit fitted out with glass-fronted, fibreglass caging which will be able to house up to 150 hedgehogs at any one time. Projects such as this are financially draining as an example, the cages

rates and return even more animals back to the wild, where they should be. There are many more important things on our wish list, including the construction of bigger and better aviaries, enclosed pools for water birds, the building of an Education and Training Centre to cater for the increasing number of courses and lectures we are running and the replacement of some of our old equipment. Our running costs are now over £25,000 per month. We rely on the support of the public to enable us to treat around 4,500 wildlife casualties every year and I hope that the support continues and that we are still helping Britain’s wildlife in another thirty years.

TEWKESBURY RFC, PROUD OF NEW FACILITIES After years of hard work, Tewkesbury Rugby Club is celebrating having hugely improved facilities, with members having completed half of their overall development plan. Nearly four years ago, the club built a new patio, entrance hall and toilets with full disabled access at the ground, which is called The Moats and is off Gander Lane. Next, they developed a new community room by using the old entrance and removing the old ladies toilet to provided a second room off the main club area. Then during last season the club built a new kitchen and completely revamped the clubhouse, removing the old kitchen, remodelling the bar and laying new flooring. Players and officials will celebrated the progress of the scheme so far with an event at The Moats on September 21. This coincided with the first league match of the season for the Gloucestershire Premier Division club, they laid on a buffet to thank all those that have helped them to revamp their base. But the ambitious club has also revealed
that it wants to crack on as soon as possible with the final part of the development plan - to build new changing rooms at a cost of between £400,000 and £500,000. The communal showers restrict the use of the existing changing rooms and officials want to open up the site so that more men, women and children can use it for rugby and other sports in the future. Secretary Geoff Sallis said: “This will provide flexibility for us to extend our activities across the range of
sports and age ranges we have at the club. It will allow the juniors to undertake games or training at the same time as senior teams, allow Running Tewkesbury club, based at the rugby club, to use the showers for both their male and female members.” The club would not have been able to do this without the help of; • Gloucestershire Environmental Trust • The Rugby Football Foundation, Lead up and Legacy grant • Tewkesbury Borough Council.

To start the walk, park in one of the car parks on the B4079 near Bredon village hall. Leave the car park and walk along the road towards Kemerton. When you reach the drive on the right (which leads to Meredith’s Nurseries - 1) walk up it and pass to the right of the greenhouses. Go over a small footbridge (2) and follow the path around the edge of a plantation, keeping the hedge to your left. When you reach the next track (3) turn left and then take the stile on your right into the Park Field (4); follow the direction arrows across the field to a road. The house opposite you is Kemerton Court. Go through the gate (5), cross the road, bear slightly left and take the gate into the orchard opposite. Walk over to the opposite side and go through the gate on to the road (6). Turn right and walk down the lane, passing the church and Upper Court on the left. Carry on past the half-timbered Old Manor and several attractive thatched cottages. Eventually the lane bears sharply right, then meets Kinsham Lane. At the T junction turn right (7) and look for the sign on the left to Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve. Walk down the track between two hedges until it meets the same track you were on earlier. Turn left (8) and walk towards the wood,

To carry on with the route, turn right and take the public footpath (opposite the bench and sign- 9) and walk down the edge of the field keeping the hedge to your left. Upon reaching the road (B4079) turn right (X) and walk back into Bredon village. At the Tjunction turn left to return to the car park.

Happy childhood memories - for ‘forty somethings’ When the former Tewkesbury Post Office closed in 2003, people of all generations lost the mosaic which used to make long waits in the PO more palatable, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. However, M&Co has responded so kindly to requests to inspect the mosaic with a view to relocating it – last month the company went to the trouble of removing its covers and ‘forty-something’, Kevin Cromwell, was delighted to see it again. It is still in the same condition and is a superb piece of art – which does not deserve to be covered up. It is 9 sq. m. in size and well adhered to the wall. Kevin will, therefore, use his profession-

Wallowers in nostalgia must accept that there will never again be the romantic picture of the steam train to delight us but James Boskett’s atmospheric photograph reminds us of the “half-mile long wooden causeway, that tip-toed” across the flood plain in days past. In 1824 it was boasted that “few places in the Kingdom are undergoing greater improvement at the present moment than the borough … of Tewkesbury. The long bridge, or causeway, which connects the Town with the Mythe, has also been much widened, and raised almost entirely out of the way of floods”. HISTORY UNCOVERED This month we bring to you a few artifacts found locally, dug up by Stuart Borley using his metal detector. It is fascinating to see the variety of objects and in this month we have attempted to clean some of the more corroded items up using a simple process of electrolysis. The church door key shown clearly has more detail after the process and it makes the item more stable. The mystery object still remains a mystery, sadly it is very fragile and has brocken up after corrosion removal. Any suggestions as to what it may have been?

GOOD AUTUMN ADVICE
AUTUMN MAINTENANCE ADVICE FOR HOME AND BUSINESS Do you know where your stopcock is? Does it turn freely? Does it shut the water off? These are all things you should check, and not in the depths of winter. This is the time to do it. Make sure that all of the taps in the house are shut off when the stopcock is closed. Some houses, particularly those that have been modified have two. It should also shut off the supply to the boiler. Did you know that a condition of your building and contents insurance, is that: A) You have properly main-
tained the property (and ensuring the correct operation of the stopcock is part of that) B) in the event of an incident, you have made every effort to mitigate any further damage. Ensuring that your stopcock operates, and closing it to stop a leak is what an insurer deems to be reasonable action to mitigate damage. Telling them "I couldn't stop the water because the tap was rusted shut" is giving them a
good reason to repudiate your claim. If you are going away for any long period of time turn off the water at the stopcock. Uncouple outdoor hoses and store them in a cool dry place. When the water inside them freezes it causes small splits which is why they leak after a while.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater A patient works in an environment, office says David Slater, local hypnotherapist and counsellor, and is continually being told to lighten up a bit as he does take things so seriously. He wondered how he could improve his own self esteem and confidence and, even , change his general demeanour which he felt left much to be desired It is very often the person who lacks self confidence who takes himself the most seriously and ends up being the butt of jibes and criticism.
The less anxious you can be the more confident you will appear. So, that advice to lighten up is good advice. It is just knowing how to do it. Get with people who have a good sense of humour as its impossible to laugh and feel anxious at the same time. Laughing, and having others laugh with you NOT at you, is a terrific boost to self esteem. During the next month examine your own behaviour patterns. Determine how often you do the following : • Take offence
• Say “ I” • Talk about yourself and your problems or feelings • Sulk or go into a moody shell • Over analyse situations. If the answer comes up as often for any of these then it is a sure sign that you are in need of lightening up. Take the opportunity as often as you can of having a good laugh. Watch comic programmes, read lighthearted books, watch funny films or DVDs. When things don’t go well for you, as this is something that will hap-
pen from time to time, step back and try and see a funny side to it ! Watch your behaviour and avoid giggling as this betrays nervousness and lack of self esteem. Keeping on saying “isn’t it awful”,“How dreadful”, etc focuses your attention on the negative and what you don’t want. Train yourself to look for the positive. A sense of humour is essential BUT make sure that you do not create laughs at other people’s expense. Confident people don’t need to do this, If you find yourself in
many arguments and confrontations then try a different approach. Step back. Take a deep breath. Either change the subject or move away. Seek compromise and move on. Just because someone expresses an opinion that you may not hold does NOT mean that they could well be right in what they say. Create for yourself an imaginary shield and believe that you can deflect negative energies and allow only then positive to get through to you. I do this regularly in hypnotherapy sessions for people who
need a boost to self esteem with considerable success. Have music around you as it can and does change the mood. Every time you feel you have made a step forward towards becoming how you want to be reward yourself and make it even more worth your while to continue. Life can and should be fun. Remember the saying of Memander -" Whoever makes you laugh helps you live !" He found this a useful start. I hope you do too. David C Slater

A Possible Life

The writer of "Birdsong" returns with a book in five parts; being five stories with a thread or two interconnecting between them. "A Possible Life" is beautifully written, constructed with elegant poise and some of the interlinking themes can easily be missed or overlooked, but that will not deter from the enjoyment of this book. The first story is one of the longer tales and is set pre and post WW2 conflict and how the events Geoffrey Talbot experiences affect his later life. For the second, Faulks moves back in time to a boy and his sister forced to grow up in an orphanage. However in adulthood he prospers and the story covers his life, that of his sister and the girl he met in the institute. We move to 2150 in Italy for the third part before coming back in time, and once more Faulks locates a story in his favoured France. Finally the fifth story is in the 1960's folk and music business. Five varied tales and the loose themes some reviewers and readers have managed to connect, but I can safely admit to missing them. However, this in no way spoils this good book. The five parts of varying lengths build a fiction that is more than just short stories. It will introduce you to new, interesting and involved characters and is a rewarding read. Selected by: Ian B. The funds will be used to help local families and individuals who find themselves in financial crisis to ensure they will not go without food. Philippa’s sponsored cycle ride Philippa Shaw, Executive Officer at the Abbey, took part in the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust Annual Ride and Stride Saturday 14th on September. Philippa, who has done long sponsored cycle rides before in aid of the Abbey, cycled thirty one miles on Saturday and visited eighteen churches and chapels on the way. Ride and Stride, run by the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust and supported by the National Churches Trust, is a great way to support churches across the country. It’s an annual sponsored walk, bike or horse ride which happens on the second Saturday of September. Walkers and riders fol-
low their chosen route between churches. The sponsorship money raised is split between the 50/50 GHCT and the home church of the participant, Philippa has raised over £440, Tewkesbury Abbey will receive at least £22.00. Many of
the churches offer and refreshments Philippa was very grateful to the ladies of St Church, Nicholas Ashchurch for the cake and tea she was given on Saturday afternoon which helped her manage the last three miles home.

TEWKESBURY MUSEUM VISITS ARE ON THE UP
A combination of the great weather and a nation wide-surge in interest in medieval times generally and the Wars of the Roses in particular has brought visitors flocking to the charming Tudor building at 64 and 64a Barton Street, that houses Tewkesbury Museum. Recently issued figures show that visitor numbers in July this year were more than double those for the same period last year, and the August figures are four times those for August 2012. Book sales, particularly those about the Battle of Tewkesbury are also up on previous years. Visitor numbers have been rising steadily for some time, but curator Maggie Thornton is delighted with this sudden increase. A decision to do away with the £2 entry fee from June this year has almost certainly contributed to the increase in visitors and ironically has proved to be a good move financially; although the income per head is down the extra a visitors mean that the museum's income is actually up on the previous year, and once the practicalities of getting the donations gifted aided are finished the income should be even better. Maggie says that more local people are using the

museum, quite often for a short visit to check out something connected with their personal history, or the property they live in. Another success story for the museum is it’s costume hire department - it has a growing number of costumes, mainly medieval, available for fancy dress, banquets and other occasions at very reasonable rates. The collection is particularly popular in July as many traders and other local residents like to dress up for the annual medieval festival. The museum houses around 6000 objects, photographs and documents, relating to the history of the town. Some of the most popular with visitors are the Roman skeleton, unearthed when the new library was being built in Sun Street, a scale model of a traditional fairground, which the museum hopes to have
back in full working order before too long and a scale model of the battle of Tewkesbury of 1471 and showing two armies facing each other in fields around what was then a farm, but it now the Gupshill Manor Public House. The museum opened in 1964, and is run as a charitable trust, leasing the building from the Town Council which has two members on the board of trustees. Opening hours are seasonal. During October the museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 12 noon to 3pm and 11am to 3pm on Saturdays. From November till March it is open Saturdays from 11am and 3pm and on special event days. THE NEW HOSPITAL This summer has seen an exciting new development for Tewkesbury, namely the new Community Hospital. Having enjoyed a pre-open day tour for the public on the 31st July what I witnessed was a fantastic facility for our town. The layout, room sizes, facilities and general feeling of space and light exceeded expectations. It is a facility we are fortunate to have and can all be proud of, on our doorstep. The only concern I have consistently had is the downsizing from 48 to 20 beds, however at the July Town Council meeting I requested a letter be sent from the Town Council for assurance that Tewkesbury people would have priority for the reduced number of beds. We have received a commitment that the residents of Tewkesbury and the surrounding areas do have priority for 13 out of the 20 beds. Cllr Phillip Workman

Irish track star wins Bredon quarter marathon This year’s Bredon quarter marathon was won by Irish 800 metre national record holder Roseanne Galligan. She completed the 6.58 mile course in a time of 40 minutes 33.3 seconds, almost one minute ahead of runner-up Adrian Spencer, who crossed the line in 41 minutes 29.8 seconds. Paul Lockyer (42:14.4) claimed third place. 125 runners took part in the street running event, which was held on the morning of Saturday 21st September. ALL SMILES AT BREDON BOAT RACE The Revivals churning out good old traditional jazz, the smell of burgers and hotdogs sizzling away in the breeze, stops out of the cider kegs, children chasing around - and the whole meadow buzzing with excitement as competitors and spectators poured through the gates of Dickie’s Meadow. The inaugural Bredon Boat Race was held in the shadow of the village’s 15th century Old Rectorythe first of what will be an annual event in Bredon. Teams of eight competed in timed heats, with The Wind in the Follys, a team of Vets from Folly Gardens in Tewkesbury, the eventual competition winners. They were closely followed by last year’s Church Fete boat race victors, Micky’s Marvels - captained by local farmer Mick Meadows. The Royal Soak and Bredon Cricket club finished third and fourth respectfully. The whole event was put together by St Giles’ Church to strengthen the sense of community in the village. Rector Matthew Baynes said, “St Giles is a happy church and we wanted to show the local community that we know how to have a bit of fun.” So, all you paddlers get yourselves in shape for the 2014 Bredon Boat Race in September of next year! ! reassure this correspondent we are acting on the information he has provided us with. Officers on my shift have seized two vehicles this week for this offence. I have recently completed a short attachment to our criminal justice department and was made aware of a
particularly nasty series of crimes in Cheltenham involving a team of two males and a female. One of the team observe their victim who is usually elderly taking money from a cash machine at one of the supermarkets. They will stand near the victim and observe as they

In some instances they even produce a map which is held up or placed on the bonnet of the car this allows another criminal to steal this victims purse or bag. The criminals can use the card to purchase goods and withdraw cash up the daily limit. This particular team have been charged and remanded in custody and are currently awaiting sentence. The lessons to be learnt are always shield your PIN, be aware of anything suspicious on the cash machine, if anyone is standing too close abandon the transaction and try again later. Once back to your to your vehicle if approached by anyone ensure you keep control of your valuables. Another very worrying problem in the last two weeks have been dogs dangerously out of control attacking other dogs. In one instance a Jack Russell was killed by two Staffordshire Terriers. The two offending animals have now been destroyed and the owner voluntarily handed them over to police. Please ensure that your dogs are properly under control when in public places and secure when in your home or garden. Many of you may not be aware that numerous motoring offences have now had the Fixed Penalty Notice fee increased to £100 these include failing to wear a seatbelt and various number plate offences such as misrepresenting the characters to show words or names. Using a mobile telephone whilst driving is now £100 and three penalty points. Lillie Stacey and Maria Burt, in only their second regatta, narrowly lost the final of the women’s J17 event. Danny Casey Gurney (15 years old) won through to the final of the J17 single sculling event and lost by a few feet. Chris Crawford and David Neather were the other finalists in the J17 2x event. In its first ever regatta young AB season, Severn rowers from Tewkesbury School have remarkable achieved success in just seven events. The achievement was celebrated at a club barbecue on the Sunday after their evening splendid day at Worcester. Both the regatta and barbecue enjoyed considerable parental support. Rowing now moves to long-distance time trials called ‘Heads’ through the winter, and club coaches expect even more success with an increasing junior squad.
