Helen Gascoyne from Bredon, who runs Snapdragon Face Art, explained to us how her project came about. “My son - Adam, now age 10 - and I have been painting pebbles and leaving them around for a year or so, just as 'random acts of kindness' hoping to make whoever finds them smile. “We returned from our holiday this summer with a bucket of pebbles and a plan. “We had discovered that the 'paint, hide, find' phenomenon is happening all over the world, so we set up Tewkesbury Pebbles. “The ethos is simple:decorate a pebble, write 'FB Tewkesbury Pebbles' on the back, hide it somewhere in the local area, and wait. “Whoever finds it, takes a picture, posts it to the Facebook page and the re-hides it for

䡵 Helen Gascoyne with her pebble-painting children someone else to find” “The project began just one month ago, sharing the Facebook page with a few friends. “In that time, the group has grown to over 2000 members and its getting bigger daily!”

Adults, children, toddler groups, schools, brownies and cubs, girls and boys brigades, local artists, council members and even Tewkesbury Police have been decorating and hunting for pebbles to share. “The best part is that it is bringing the community together, Helen added. “Not only are people getting creative in all kinds of ways, but families are out walking and

getting exercise. Parents have reported that school runs have become fun and that children are choosing to go out hunting for pebbles instead of staring at screens. “The enthusiasm for Tewkesbury Pebbles has been incredible. The smiles of the 'pebblers' are amazing - they are proud of both their creations and their discoveries. “Some of the pebbles have been found and rehidden several times already - they keep popping up in different places around the town and villages!” “Tewkesbury Pebbles may have begun in our town, but we are hoping that it will spread far and wide - it has been reported that some of our pebbles are on their way to Slovakia, Rhodes and even South Africa.” See also page 56

A fleet of vintage diesel locomotives will recreate the sight and sounds of a bygone age, operating a 19 mile round trip between Toddington and Cheltenham Race Course stations. There will be something for everyone - for families looking for an enjoyable day out as well as for the railway and diesel traction enthusiast. The majority of the GWR's fleet of heritage diesel locomotives are now well passed their 50th birthdays (the oldest is 58), so the event also reflects the history of British electrical and mechanical engineering from the 1950s and 1960s. At Toddington, visitors can photograph the locomotives in the yard when they are not working trains. At Winchcombe station the Carriage and Wagon workshops will be open, so visitors can view the railway's new facilities for maintaining and overhauling carriages to a high standard. Normal prices apply,

with all day rover and family tickets available. Later in the month the second Cotswolds Food & Drink Fayre will be held at Toddington Station Car Park (21st22nd October). Visitors can also enjoy a trip along the line to Laverton, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse at normal ticket prices.

New book launched to mark Harry’s Centenary Tewkesbury businessman Harry Workman was born on 12th October 1917 and he had a long and eventful life until he passed away in January 2016. To mark what would have been his centenary and the dairy that he founded celebrating 80 years next year, Cotteswold Dairy has joined forces with Tewkesbury Historical Society (THS) to publish a book “Fuelled by Milk”. The first two parts were published in 20034 by THS and Harry and contain Harry’s memories of his early life in Tewkesbury, founding Cotteswold Dairy and the honour of being Borough Mayor twice. As those of us who knew him fondly remember, it was the way Harry told the stories which inspired and we are fortunate that he has passed this skill onto his son The third part of the book has been written by his son Roger to celebrate the history of the family firm. It is fortunate that Harry’s expertise was successfully passed onto Roger and the two

worked closely to build up the business. It is now managed by the third generation who have continuing philosophy learned from their grandfather, with Roger retaining his role as Chairman. The book, filled with an abundance of photographs, will be launched

on Thursday, 19th October 2017 at 7.45pm in the Methodist Church at the Cross at the meeting of Tewkesbury Historical Society. There will be a presentation by Roger, where there will signed copies and a chance to buy discounted copies of the book. Thereafter, they will be available through Alison’s Bookshop and www.ths.freeuk.com. It has been printed by the local Tewkesbury firm of Packwoods Printers. All are welcome – THS members £2.50, and members of the public £4.00. ‘Fuelled by Milk’ Refreshments - will be freely available.

New book celebrates life and work of Tewkesbury’s charitable hero A charity set up by a prosperous Tudor merchant Giles Geast helped relieve poverty in Tewkesbury town for over 300 years. “The records of the Giles Geast Charity are one of our best sources for local history,” said John Dixon, chair of Tewkesbury Historical Society. “Most of the houses Geast bequeathed still stand today, in Church Street, Mill Bank, and nearby: Tolsey Lane was also once known as Geast Lane. “To mark the launch of his new book, Dan Beaver - a well known American historian - is

visiting the UK especially to present an illustrated talk about the man, his world, and the charity he founded. “The event will take place in Tewkesbury Abbey Parish Hall on Tuesday 17th October at 4.45pm.” Jointly presented by Tewkesbury Historical Society and the Bristol & Glos Archaeological Society, there is no charge for entrance and all are very welcome.

THE OLD AND THE NEW This striking photograph dates back to the 1960's.It shows a steam locomotive with one carriage, probably with few passengers, crossing the new M50 motorway during construction. The Tewkesbury to Malvern railway was in the path of the new M50 (then known as the Ross Spur) and a new bridge was provided. The photo depicts clearly the demise of the Victorian era against the clean bold lines of the Space age and the new era that was yet to come. The Railway bridge was removed, only about three years ago, with a view to reuse elsewhere.

There is a major problem with some prescription medications, because a main line supplier called Bristol has just been shut down following an inspection, writes Peter Badham. The results of this is that some blood pressure tablets, pain killers, and antidepressant drugs are in very short supply, and there is no clear indication when this will be resolved. In some cases it mean that might patients will have to have their medication changed, which is not ideal. As a company Badhams are very fortunate, in that we have our own warehouse and keep buffer stocks which will last us about three months. THE VIEW FROM KING JOHN’S BRIDGE This comparison is made from a photograph, taken in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. We can date the photograph by the Lattice bridge crossing the River Avon in the background. It used to carry the Tewkesbury to Malvern Railway line and was taken down in the 1960’s and was replaced by a much lighter structure to connect the Marina at a later date. This part of the river was a place where rowing boats could be hired as can be seen next to the pontoons that have now disappeared, probably due to changes made to the weir and the sluices during the period between the two photographs.

After a brief welcome and introduction in the wine shop, our host Cathie gave Club members a tour of the Vineyard (see photograph) and such topics as soil and grape varieties, weather and frost protection and pest and disease prevention were discussed. Grape varieties being grown included Phoenix, Pinot Noir and Siegerrebe, and many of these grapes are nearly ready for harvesting. Lovells Vineyard over now produces 12,000 bottles of wine a year, and most of these are supplied to local retail outlets and restaurants. A delicious buffet lunch was provided,

together with samples of wine such as Sonatina, Madeleine Angevine and Promenades. After lunch many Club members took the opportunity to buy some of the wines that they had just sampled and enjoyed. Is it possible

that visiting Lovells Vineyard could become an annual event for the Club? Longdon & District Probus Club meets on most Monday mornings at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury, together with occasional local lunches

Keeping your pet calm when fireworks light up the skies in November Fireworks can make celebrations exciting for us, but they’re not always quite as much fun for our pets. There are things we can do to help keep them calmer and safer. It’s up to you as their owner to help them cope and make sure their fireworks nights are as easy as they can be. Does my pet need help coping with fireworks? Generally, most pets will struggle with fireworks. Animals have acute senses: for them every flash and bang can be unexpected and alarming. Think about how your pet reacts to fireworks; or if you haven’t had them when there’s been fireworks, how they react to loud noises. Do they show any of the following behaviours? Cats and Dogs ● Cowering or hiding behind the sofa ● Trying to run away or escape (this can include digging up the carpet) ● Soiling the house ● Restlessness, e.g. pacing and panting for dogs, and over grooming (cats) ● Barking incessantly (dogs only!) If they show any of these signs, your pet might need help coping

Provide a den or hiding place for your pet whilst fireworks are going off

Use a pheromone diffuser as close to the den or hiding place as possible, or where your pet spends most of its time

Ignore fearful behaviour, dogs may pick up on their owners’ anxiety making the problem worse

Walk your dog early in the evening before fireworks start

Ensure windows, doors and cat flaps remain closed during firework season to both prevent pets escaping and reduce the noise

Ensure your cats have access to enough litter trays during

firework season especially if you’re keeping them inside Provide distractions, in the form of new toys and chews.

Draw curtains and put the TV on to mask any noise DO NOT punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed

What can I do to help? Ideally, it’s best to prepare some time in advance. Speak to your vet at least six to twelve weeks in advance. Long term behavioural therapy really needs to be looked at six months in advance.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society The 1970s shopping centre certainly introduced some uniformity and harmony into the Town streetscape in this area, It is certainly neither classical nor romantic harmony - some even may say it is discordant. Should not the revived Oasis Dental Surgery deserve applause for those flashed of blue which have improved the rectangular block which has been Boots for four decades? The demolished buildings were certainly romantic – and very individualistic. By looking at them individually, we have seen that each revealed a different history. The gabled Doddo Café (90) seems to have survived all changes since the Middle Ages. The other houses, however, have been modernised at different stages and with different budgets in a desire to deny their singular Medieval heritage. 87 to 89 merely had the past disguised by plaster. No 85 was more imaginative with its one dimensional gable. Nos. 84 and 86 were, however, 19th Century new-builds, which managed to guarantee their privacy by stopping up the public alleys to form courts. It was very difficult to visit the rear of all these buildings until demolition started – and then, for a painfully short time, was revealed the essential medieval character of the buildings certainly from 87-90, including the Doddo. This was the heritage that John Moore and the “Meds” were fighting for in the 1960s. There were several designs for the council to choose – does not the one displayed below seem at least to have caught the spirit of the traditional buildings? However Town Clerk Ken Smale’s “Mods” won and for forty years we have been shopping there, even if it is not an aesthetically stimulating experience.

This novel offers an unusual look at a period of history which in this centenary year seems very apposite. There are not many stories to read set in Moscow during the 1917 Revolution let alone one where the principal female character is English. In May 1914 Gerly Freely moves to Moscow as a governess, she chooses to stay on with the Kobelev family after the outbreak of WW1, and endures the uprising and is both a witness and a victim of their volatile experiences. The narration, by Gerly, is very much about her relationships with the family and the children. Whilst the parents escape south, the two older children Pasha and Sonja return to Moscow and endure, alongside older family members, the aftermath of the fall of the Tsar, and the eventual October revolution. There is one other principal character, Nikita Slavkin, an inventor and scientist and a bit of an odd ball. He is the "vanisher" and it is the events that lead up to his disappearance that form the non domestic structure of this novel. The household evolves into a commune, which becomes more mixed and interwoven as the months pass. The relationships

within the household, and those of Nikita with Gerty and Sonja are complex. Gerty survives by working as a tutor and translator and becomes involved with a party official, Pelyagin. This strand of the story extracts the reader from the vagaries of the family home. The author has previously written only a well received travel book, so this is her first venture into fiction, this is in part evident as Gerly recounts her experiences. So the reader knows she survives, but how their lives evolve should be read and not revealed by this review. BREDONâ€™S ANNUAL REGATTA DRAWS SPECTATORS TO THE RIVERSIDE Once again the annual Bredon Boat Races held on 2 September were a great success, with more people attending this year than ever before. The afternoon was a great example of the whole local community coming together, particularly young families. There was fun and excitement and the sun shone all afternoon. Four boats were used this year for the event which meant the pace was quite fast moving. Many congratulations to the winners Acquaholics. TEWKESBURY’S TIMELESS INN The Lower Lode Inn lies at the confluence of the river Swilgate and the River Severn, sitting neatly on the East Bank. We are lucky enough this month to be able to make a then and now comparison from a colour postcard, dated the 1st June 1914. Remarkably little has changed to this bucolic scene. The old view shows five mature trees standing behind the Inn, now reduced to one, the ferry pictured sank in 1920, but the service has been restored by Landlady Sam Snape and walkers can catch a seasonal service to cross the river. The Inn still has all the early features still in place and the buildings shown to the left of the photo stand where the current day function room is located. On the reverse, the writer of the card simply wrote to his parents in Witton Birmingham “Dear Mother and Dad, Quite alright at Tewkesbury, weather lovely, Walter.” Strange to think that less than two months later, Europe would be plunged into the First World War, and it is more than probable that young Walter was to become a participant.

Another Art Exhibition at Holy Trinity Church, Tewkesbury This is the fifth Art Exhibition that Holy Trinity has staged in the church. Members of Holy Trinity and other local churches are submitting a great variety of their creative work. People of all ages and abilities are preparing to take part. We see the exhibition as an opportunity to celebrate God-given creative gifts which many people enjoy using to make beautiful and interesting things using photography, paints, pencils, needle and thread, and all sorts of things! Three years ago both Liz and Nigel left their teaching careers and moved south from Lancashire to live their dreams of owning a coffee shop and making handmade chocolates. Local Independent Bookshop “comes of age” In October 1999, alison's bookshop and musicroom opened their doors for the first time, now 18 years later, they have come of age. This anniversary is special says Owner/Manager Ian Nicholson. “When we opened there were nearly 2,000 Independent bookshops in the UK, that number has now declined to fewer than 900. We were told we would not survive in Tewkesbury, but the support our regular customers have given us over the years has proved these pessimists wrong. Many towns no longer have a local bookshop.” alison’s bookshop is unusually large for such a rural town as Tewkesbury, and Ian is often told how great it is to find “a real bookshop”. What makes alison’s a bit different is a stock of around 17,000

books which rises in the run up to Christmas. This is far larger than some of the Multiples stock as Ian believes customers want to be able to see and feel the book before purchase, even to assess the size of print is comfortable to read. The inventory at alison’s is diverse, reflecting feedback from regulars and casual customers. Every book is selected personally by Ian, and not, as in the Mulitiples, by some anonymous Central Buying Office. Alongside the shelves of books, visitors will find thousands of cards

displayed throughout the shop and ranging across and besides two floors of facts and fiction. A comprehensive stock of Ordnance Survey maps, children's and adult jigsaws and gift wrap. Upstairs in the musicroom are classical CDs, and sheet music of all genres including ABRSM publications, and a select range of guitar strings. Many customers come a long way especially to select from alison’s extensive range of cards, where customers report “you have the best selection they have ever seen”, and “it is like visiting an art gallery,”

though the selection is far more diverse than that. Autumn sees the arrival of stylish calendars, diaries and Christmas cards, “with a difference”, alongside regular stock ranges of popular quality jigsaws, and gift stationery. TURNER’S COURT Turner’s Court, off Church Street, is shorter than the alleys in the High Street or Barton Street, but no less interesting for that. Despite the ‘Court’ name, it’s a public right of way, having been adopted as such in 1929. The residents had petitioned the Council to pave it as it had been used by the public for above 20 years. The council agreed on condition that the residents paid for essential drainage work beforehand and relinquished their rights over the court. This they did, and it became an alley, though not in name. Like many alleys, the name comes from a past occupant of the ‘front house’. In this case Mr Turner, a stocking knitter, though some say that William Turner, the artist, (Not the more famous JMW Turner) stayed there and gave it its name. Once, there were five cottages and part of the garden of Gainsborough House; (81 Church Street) in the alley. In 1868, the sale of the late Nathaniel Chandler’s property included Gainsborough House and two cottages in Turner’s Court which had been converted into a warehouse. They were converted back and occupied by families until quite recently. The three cottages at the top of the alley proved too small for modern life. No. 1 was added on to 82 Church Street; Nos. 2 and 3 were converted into a single house. At

the other end of the alley, the cottage fronting St Mary’s Lane was demolished and the site is now a garden. Only one cottage remains unchanged. In common with the rest of Tewkesbury, drowning was an everpresent danger and Turner’s Court seems to have had more than its share of tragedy. In 1902, the four years old James Green drowned in the Swilgate when his grandmother sent him home, unaccompanied, from her house in Parker’s Court, Barton Street (behind the vet’s surgery), back to Turner’s Court. He strayed down to the Swilgate, and fell in. In 1927, an even younger child, William Bullock, was playing with his little brother at a house at the St Mary’s Road end when he wandered away. After six days’ searching, his body was

found floating by the Abbey Mill. Charles Bostock’s drowning in 1913 was different. He was a 31 year old father of three who was on the Ham close to the Quay when he heard a cry for help. Despite not being able to swim, he jumped in. Jessie Hopping, who had fallen in, was rescued but Charles Bostock and Jessie’s nine-year-old brother Charles both drowned. In 1941, Charles Bostock’s son, Sgt. John Bostock of the Worcestershire Regiment, was killed in action. The strange case of Conrad Strawford reminds us of the food crisis in the war. In 1942 he was brought to court by the Food Control Committee, and found guilty of wasting hardto-buy oranges, for which he was fined 10s. He had somehow

obtained a case of oranges, which were extremely scarce, from Liverpool and used them for practicing a partytrick by cutting them in two without them appearing to be cut at all, and then letting them waste. The magistrates took a dim view of this, though they said they’d let him off lightly. Two years later, Mr Strawford, aged about 70, was found lying dead in front of his open front door, at 2 Turner’s Court. The alley’s appearance hasn’t changed a great deal over the years. Houses have been modernised, of course, but there has been no clearance except the cottage on St Mary’s Lane, no additions and no intrusions. It is a lot quieter than it once was, but it is clear that the residents care for their alley. It has a lot to commend it.

Harvest Festival collections What a change in the weather. Autumn has arrived and with it Harvest Festival time. In our modern life, it is sometimes difficult to relate to years gone by when there was an immediate need to say thank you for the harvest safely gathered in, knowing that the success of the harvest meant you would not starve over the bleak winter months. Now it seems more of a tradition, but here at Foodbank we rely heavily on the food that we get in from the many Harvest Festival celebrations taking place in the town. For our clients it can still be a cold bleak winter. This year we would like to put out a plea for the following items of food where our stocks are running low: biscuits, sponge puddings, soup, pasta sauces and tinned meat. BLOOM AWARDS A joint awards evening was held this month at the Watson Hall by the Town Mayor, Peggy Clatworthy, and the Tewkesbury in Bloom team. At the recent Air Ambulance open day, held at Strensham Anthony Stockman, President of Tewkesbury Rotary club flew in by Helicopter and presented a cheque for £5,000 to the organisation. The money had been raised from this year’s very successful Tewkesbury Classic Car show. Anthony praised the efforts of the Rotary Club and their volunteers for this year’s overwhelming success, and the amazing work that the Air Ambulance does on just voluntary contributions.

In the 1800s the most common European dog used for protection and herding was the Continental Shepherd Dog, writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only. Although these dogs looked similar, in the 1890s, three separate breeds emerged, they were, the Belgian Shepherd, the Dutch Shepherd and the German Shepherd. With the ambition of creating the perfect working dog, ex-cavalry captain Max Von Stephanitz, admired the strength, intelligence and ability of these herding dogs. With this in mind, in 1899, he bought a dog from a show and renamed it, Horan Von Grafrath, and immediately founded the German Shepherd Dog. Horan was registered as the first German Shepherd Dog. (GSD) Horan became the centre of an intensive breeding programme, by using Horan’s progeny on its self with other

German Shepherd Dog society members dogs. This inbreeding was deemed necessary in order to fix desirable traits sought in the breed. As a result of his

Alsatian Wolf Dog, after the French region Alsace, near the German border. Only in 1977, has the breed been allowed to register as German Shepherds. However, popularity did grow fast in the UK, in 1919, 54 GSDs were registered and this grew to 8000 in just seven years. As a generalisation, the show dog are bred for an extreme sloping top-line, whereas the service and working GSDs, have retained the traditional straight back of the breed. Batman’s dog was a GSD. Ace, The Bat Hound. This dog had a star on it’s forehead which needed to be hidden, so he too wore a mask. Ace disappeared from batman comics in 1964, but reappeared in animated television during the 1990s, but as a Great Dane cross.

Hat trick for town in Bloom Awards The town received a Gold award as well as Best in Category in the town division plus one of our longer serving volunteers, Pete Aldrige has been given a special award . The In Bloom judges Roger Bache and David Pritchard were particularly impressed with the standard of floral displays at Marina Court which they judged to be at Chelsea show standard. The judges were similarly impressed with the efforts of Tony Lord and Stuart Strathern who along with Tewkesbury Town North Residents Association provide stunning displays at the Black Bear island and at the village green, while the floral displays provided by Friends of Victoria Gardens are the best seen yet by the judging panel. Roger and David were impressed with the town's community involvement particularly with the opportunities on offer for young people and made special mention of the work of Jackie Dean (owner of Bluebell Wood florist shop) with the Kid's Flower Club and the new project led by Jo Worthy Jones which will enhance the courtyard garden at the new GP surgery, the Devereux Centre. The judges were equally impressed with the work of the volunteers who run and manage the Nature Reserve, and the way the Town Council protects and manages The Ham. POSITIVE THINKING with local therapist and counsellor David Slater

OPEN YOUR MIND, AND BECOME MORE REALISTIC So many of us have set ideas and it is difficult, almost impossible to bring about a change of mind, writes David Slater. There are many people who measure their riches in bank balances and material wealth and you would be hard pressed to get them to change their minds.

No doubt, at times, many of us have been tempted to measure success in life in these units. The following story, the original author of which is unknown, may go some way to helping you change your mind and become more realistic! Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the

same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. Twenty four hours a day seven days a week and he had been in hospital a substantial time. The two men talked for hours on end.They got on really well together which was a god send to begin with. It broke the monotony of the day. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs,where they had been on holidays, the hospital window. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. This man was an artist as he painted the views he could see in vivid, lively words. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the

activity and colour of the world outside. This was the time every day that gave him wonderful things to see in his minds eye, wonderful things to imagine and enjoy in a second hand sort of way The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen . Further in the distance could be seen hills and forests and the wideness and magic of the countryside around. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this wonderful scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by the road right outside the hospital. The other man could not hear the band but he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days, weeks and months passed. One

morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the man by the window had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. The other man was heartbroken but realised that, for his friend, this was a happy release from what had become a life of intense pain. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window and the nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank brick wall. There was nothing else to be seen at all. Where ever he looked all he could see was a dull brick wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this

window. The nurse replied that the man had actually been blind and could not even see the wall. She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to cheer you up and encourage you.’ Just think about this: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy. ‘Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .’

BENEATH THE ‘STRANDED WHALE’ Bredon Hill - an outlier of the Cotswolds - is known locally as ‘The Stranded Whale’ because of its appearance, rising above the broad flat vale of Evesham, with a gentle slope to the south and west, and the scarp side falling dramatically to the north and west. The lower slopes are ringed with charming villages, and this route visits three of them, starting from Kemerton. Park near the memorial in the centre of the village, walk down the lane towards church and at the crossroads, turn left. You will pass some farm buildings on the right, and at the end of the tarmac road take the path through the trees. At the bottom of the slope, turn left just before the stream and go through a five bar gate into a field (1). The ground can be quite boggy here. Follow the path right across the field to a farm gate, go through and take the same line to cross a footbridge in the next field. (2). Keep ahead and go over a stile, then yet another plank bridge and two more stiles to reach the lower grounds of Overbury Estate (3). Overbury Court is visible away to your left. Go diagonally across the field towards the agricultural buildings in the Estate Yard. Go through a kissing gate and follow the yellow way markers, passing some garages and up a slope past a wood store. At the end of the fence, turn left (4) up a track, passing some barns on the left, and into Overbury village. On meeting the road (5) turn left, and walk past the Church and a high stone wall. Cross to

to the right. (15). Take the footpath which passes between a cottage and Upper Court’s gardens (to the

left), down to a small lake. The remains of an old cider mill can be seen here too. Keep the lake to your

right, and at the end of the bank go along the path into the trees, then over a footbridge to return to point (1).

䡵 Upper Court, Kemerton the right hand side of the road as you walk out of the village, and look for a metal gate on your right (6). Go through the gate and follow the arrows across the field to another small gate. Pass through it and walk ahead, keeping the hedge to your right. (Temporary fences and gates are sometimes added into this field). Eventually you will meet a lane coming up from Kemerton (7). Walk straight ahead down a lane, passing a farm on your right. At the next junction keep straight ahead into Bayliss Road, and look for a path in front of you, leading between some houses into a field (8). The path bears right, then left, to skirt the right hand side of the field. Keep on this path, go through a gap in a hedge and keep the same line, eventually emerging on to the road in Westmancote (9). Turn left and walk down through the vil-

lage, until you reach a three way junction. Bear right along the road towards Bredon for a short distance, then cross opposite the bus shelter (10) and take a narrow path into some trees at the side of a bungalow. Keep following this path until you emerge through a small gate, cross a small plantation and meet a broader track (11). Turn right along this track, then left along another wide path with hedges either side. (12). When you reach the road (13) turn right, then take the next road on the left back into Kemerton village (14). This is Back Lane, which wends its way gently upwards, with some fine old buildings along the way. After passing the black and white Old Manor, and then Kemerton Court, look for a small green with an attractive Georgian House set back
