A tour around the building site will show visitors the different levels, layout and size. THIRD SUCCESS FOR ABBEY TEA ROOMS On Thursday 9th September at the Heart of England in Bloom (HEIB) presentations in Rugby, Tewkesbury's Abbey Tea Rooms Gold in category for our courtyard gardens. For the third consecutive year, Pixie Brown of Abbey Tea Rooms has been awarded Gold from Heart of England in Bloom for her courtyard gardens. The gardens not only shows off an abundance of flowers but is complemented by vintage garden implements.

These include a butter churn, a smaller version of the giant horse sculptures erected at Stonehills to commemorate the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 and a wind chime made from rolling pins and shoe brushes. The gardens are an extension of the Tea Rooms, which is covered from floor to ceiling in memorabilia. Members from the town’s Royal British Legion Club will be launching the 2015 Poppy Appeal later this month. On Saturday 24th October 2015 you will find RBL representatives in the high street manning a stall at the High Street Market, so please do pop by and have a chat. Local author’s new novel Andrew Chapman, who lives near Tewkesbury, has recently published his third novel. In The Leaving, Nick Propert, a clergyman in a Midlands town, suffers a devastating shock when his wife disappears. Although their relationship has been strained there appears to be no explanation for her leaving and Nick is left to reconstruct his life in her absence. This leads him to a remote peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, a place where he can seek to understand what has happened to his life and whether a future on his own might be possible. The answers are surprising to him. Andrew Chapman has had two previous novels published Beyond the Silence (2010) and Ikon (2012). He brings to The Leaving (paperback, £8,99) a style that characterised his previous books; compelling narrative flow and a deep insight into the people whose stories are found within. All three of Andrew’s titles are published by Pilrig Publishing and can be purchased from Alison's Bookshop at 138/139 High Street in Tewkesbury. Andrew will be signing copies of his book at Alison’s at 10am on Saturday 3rd October.

Many readers might recall this author's debut novel 'The Wilderness', a moving story about a man who struggles to recall his early life while in old age his memory is fading, causing him to doubt his recollections and casting him out into a wilderness of mental uncertainty. In this her third novel, the author recounts through the auspices of her anonymous narrator the events of a friendship, began in childhood, renewed in adulthood, until the events in middle age prompt her to start to write a letter to this friend, who we know as Butterfly. A story about two girls, a shared teenage life in a quiet village and before events separate them. Our narrator meets her future husband, Nicholas, in original circumstances on the night her Grandmother dies. In married life they return to her inherited her parents cottage where they raise their son, Teddy. Butterfly turns up one evening unannounced and stays indefinitely becoming an extra part of the household and in some ways, the family.

It is the narrator's reflections of these years and events that make up the core of this very readable book. However, what adds to the heart of the story is the narrator's current life. Her involvement and friendship with Yannis, a Cretan shop and cafe owner who has a wife keen to move back home. Her part-time work as a carer and one male patient in particular, but also with Lara, the daughter of an acquaintance. Her relationship, on-going, with Nicholas, her husband. It is these other strands to the Butterfly story that add so much to this gentle book. It is a lovely satisfying read. Selected by: Ian B. Katie helps Little Princesses Local lass Katie Ballentine has done her bit to help children who have suffered hair loss through treatment for cancer. Katie’s lovely flowing locks were shorn by

Tewkesbury hairdresser Peter Hickman, and have been donated to the charity Little Princess Trust. The organisation provides real-hair wigs and hairpieces to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own through chemotherapy. The Trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic supporters like Katie, and receives no formal fundraising. Peter Hickman’s salon manager Jane Powell cut Katie’s hair, supported by their new stylist Isobel Taylor who also took the picture above. ANOTHER BUSY SEASON ENDS Well, not really, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Although the manic spring and summer months have just about finished for another year, I think the hedgehogs haven’t been told that wildlife rescue centres should have a quiet few months before it all starts again in March/April. Most of the patients we have treated or reared this year have now been released back into the wild. Fox cubs, ducklings, gulls, corvids, blackbirds, thrushes, sparrows, robins, pigeons, dunnocks, owls, hedgehogs, leverets, rabbits, wagtails and many, many more species have been successfully handreared and are now back out in their natural environment - where they should be.

WORK UNDERWAY FOR THE BIG SWITCH ON Work is well underway with the planning for this year’s Tewkesbury Christmas Lights, which will be switched on by Father Christmas on Sunday 22nd November. The lights are being checked by the team at Rifina Ltd so that they shine brightly throughout the month of December in the town centre. The Christmas Festival of Lights will be held in the High Street on Sunday 22nd November already nearly 70 market and craft stalls have booked for the event. There will also be entertainment with small fairground rides, the Tewkesbury Town Training Band, Steve Kaos the stiltwalker, Ukuladies ukulele band from Cheltenham and, of course, Father Christmas will be there to make sure the lights are switched on. Everyone can help towards the costs of the lights by purchasing a “Memory Bulb”. This gives an opportunity to remember a loved one or send a message to someone by donating a small sum towards the lights, and having a token attached to the large Christmas tree in the town. Forms and details will be available at several shops in the town, and will be printed in next month’s edition of Tewkesbury Direct. Alan raises over £350,000 for Crohn’s charity Popular Tewkesbury barber Alan Cresswell has achieved a milestone in his fundraising efforts for CICRA - the charity which assists young adults with Crohn’s and colitis. Alan - whose barbershop is in Church Street - started raising money for CICRA in 1983, when his son Mark was diagnosed with Crohn’s. This summer Alan handed over a cheque for £1000, raised by his Tewkesbury Group, taking the total amount he and his supporters have raised to over £350,000. Thirty two years ago

Alan, his wife Doris and over twenty friends and family set out not just to raise money, but also promote awareness of Crohn’s and the charity CICRA. The money Alan’s Tewkesbury Group have raised has contributed hugely to research into th condition. Down the years his off-the-wall fundraising

efforts have included completing 100 haircuts in under three hours and an annual ‘It’s a Knockout’ contest.

CICRA has formally thanked Alan for his efforts in their Autumn Bulletin, which was published last month.

ROSES THEATRE OPENS DOORS TO A PROMISING FUTURE After a summer of extensive renovations, The Roses Theatre reopened to the public on Thursday 24 September, to a sell out audience. For the past three months the building has been enclosed in scaffolding as work carried out apace to complete the refurbishment. Architects Poole Phillips and contractors Matthews Construction have worked tirelessly to ensure this momentous change was realised to its full potential. The £820,000 project has been funded by The Arts Council, Tewkesbury Council, Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, and Barnwood among other trusts, alongside a wealth of local business support. The Roses states that the project has only been feasible thanks to the generous support of audiences and local residents who have really got behind

the developments. Director Deborah Rees says: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters. Well over 3,000 people have individually donated to this project as well as support from local trusts and businesses. We could not have achieved any of this without this amazing support.” The real triumph was the much publicised buy a brick campaign which has raised the theatre tens of thousands of pounds, and took the fundraising campaign within sight of reaching its target. As a result theatre staff took the opportunity to expand the development works to include the auditorium, and as such audiences will now find a

newly carpeted and redecorated auditorium which was not included within the original plan. While the bulk of the work will be completed on time, the theatre will use the autumn months to phase in the remainder of the works, thus giving breathing time to ensure the offer is exactly right. Visitors will notice a tremendous difference as soon as they enter the modernised building; the foyer has been extended into a light and airy atrium which will hit guests with its wow factor decor and contemporary ambience. The new downstairs coffee bar is selling a tempting collection of delicious cakes, pastries, coffees, teas and refreshments, the toilets have been completely

overhauled, the auditorium has been repainted and a new carpet installed, the upstairs bar will be serving pre show meals, and a brand new heating system has been established. While the theatre itself was closed to the public, live and film events were held at The Watson Hall and Victoria Pleasure Gardens as it was still important to provide the local communities with the diverse programme of entertainment they expect from The Roses. The Manfreds will be the first to perform in the improved building with their original front man Paul Jones and many of their best jazz and blues songs.

THE LADY OF THE CAKE A lady well known in the area for her cake making held a twelve hour bake off on 15th September in aid of the charity Sands. Ruth Winters bakes a total of 3,602 cupcakes during the marathon beating her estimate of 3,500 and visitors followed the smells of fresh baking to find Ruth, mixer in hand beating up hundreds of eggs. Ruth supported the Stillbirth and neonatal death charity after her grand daughter was born prematurely and passed on soon after. Ruth so far has raised close to ÂŁ2,000 with some money still to be collected and she would like to thank family and friends for their support especially her husband Frank and daughter Samii.

They organised the Paddle Power Boat Race, featuring canoe-style vessels which took place on 18th September on the lake at Croft Farm Water Park, at Bredon’s Hardwick, near Tewkesbury. There were 31 teams racing with nearly 200 paddlers and a significant number of spectators. The junior 11 category had six teams from Norton, Tirlebrook and Tredington primary schools and Norton won the event. In the senior event, there were 25 teams. These included Tewkesbury School students and teachers. GE Aviation sent 6 teams and there were also entries from Rifina and Stagecoach. Charlotte Potter, Marketing Assistant at Stagecoach West said, “I think it was fantastic that there were so many teams taking part, including teachers from the school”. One of the Bishop’s Cleeve based GE Aviation teams came through the heats and

emerged victorious. Kevin Wilson, Senior Engineering Manager at GE Aviation said, “This is the second year we have supported Paddle Power, and once again the students did a fantastic job of organising a very successful community event – they should be very proud of what they have achieved”. The school’s business teacher, Charlie Gardner, said that donations are still coming in but the event has already raised more than £2,500 for the Charity. Oldbury, 1970

Life after death? Knowing that much of the Oldbury was to be demolished, photographs of the stricken area were systematically taken – by the MOD, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. The black and white photo was taken in October 1970 and we can see the remains of Martin and Bennetts, the Corn merchants. In the foreground was the whitened wall of the former single-track railway that had been closed before 1962. The wall has been reduced by a half and still survives behind the pedestrians. It has been recently, but perhaps over-enthusiastically, restored. Behind the corn warehouse is a single storey “Nearly New” shop and behind that, with a car outside, is Sweets the Undertaker’s workshop. The land-tax collectors verdict in 1910 was “half good brickwork and half old; good roof & fair repair inside”. Thus it lingered; in 2003 seemingly defying gravity. When I took the photograph, it had such thin walls that it seemed irredeemable. As a listed building, however, it has now been resurrected by an intrepid developer - as the romantically named “Old Coffin Store”. It also has the virtue of eclipsing the 1970s architectural tragedy behind, now gratefully run by John Dixon Halfords.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BEAST? This month’s walk may not be for those of a nervous disposition, writes Jack B. Walker. It takes us along some of the high, mysterious paths on Bredon Hill, steeped in legend and local folklore. In recent years there have been many sightings of a ‘big cat’ here too - reputedly a black panther, known as the ‘Beast of Bredon’. In the lengthening shadows of Autumn, the mind can play tricks....

䡵 Bells Castle, high on Bredon Hill

Park you car near the Catholic Church in Kemerton, off the road from Bredon to Beckford Walk up the lane ahead of you, ignoring all turnings to the left, until you reach Bell’s Castle (1). These parts are reputedly haunted by a spectral coach and horses, although this may have been a rumour put about by one Captain Bell - who converted the old cottages in the 18th century to create the imposing ‘castle’ that we see today. It was alleged that Bell was a smuggler, and he may have fabricated the stories of apparitions to detract attention from his illicit activities here. Passing the castle, go through the gate into the field ahead of you (2) and continue ahead on the path to go through some trees. (3). You are now on a bridleway with the wall of Overbury Park to your right. Take the next path on the left (4) and walk with the field boundary on your

right until you reach Sundial Farm (5). These pleasant old buildings provide the setting for another spooky tale. It was here, some eighty years ago, that a courting couple were terrified by an enormous black animal with ‘burning red eyes’ growling at them. Stories of a large black dog roaming the high hill also abounded in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that reports of a ‘black panther’ in the woodlands and hedgerows began to come in. They continue to this day. Leaving Sundial Farmyard, take the right hand path (6) and keep along it until you reach the track at the scarp edge of Bredon Hill (7). Turn right along it to reach Parson’s Folly at Bredon Summit. Exit via the earthworks (8) and take the permissive path back to the Bridleway (9). Turn right to descend to point 4, and back down to Kemerton.

On Saturday 31st October the Witchfynder will be in residence at the museum in Church Street, between 2pm and 3pm. Visitors can hear tales of Gloucestershire witches and how they were tried and punished in this entertaining and spellbinding investigation of the history of witchcraft and witches. It is suitable for all ages. Later in the day, from 4pm to 5pm, Darren Oldridge will give a pres-

entation exploring various causes of witch trials in the western world. Many thousands perished in the witch persecutions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. At Halloween it is appropriate to ask what lay behind these terrible events, and what lessons may be learned from them today Darren is a senior lecturer in history at the University of Worcester and a specialist in early modern religious histo-

Museum talks Tewkesbury Town Museum will be holding a series of fundraising talks this Autumn and Winter, at Trinity Church Hall in Oldbury Road, Tewkesbury. The talks are around one hour long with a question and answer session afterwards, followed by light refreshments. Talks will be held on Tuesdays October 13th and 27th, November 10th and 24th 24th on Monday December 7th. MAJOR HERITAGE PROJECT, ON THE STARTING BLOCKS FOR SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE A newly formed group, has taken a lease at the working docks at Sharpness near Berkeley, on a storage area and large locomotive shed. The new group, the Vale of Berkeley railway has been working fervently with a view to establishing a working Heritage railway that will operate along the old Berkeley branch line. Still used by nuclear flask trains, it is hoped to run along the line’s 5 mile length. The group also have aims to rebuild Sharpness and Berkeley

stations, and establish a working rail and dockside museum. Agreement has been reached with the owners of Winchcombe Railway to relocate their, nationally acclaimed collection of rare and local exhibits to Sharpness and owners of working steam and diesel locomotives rolling stock and engineering equipment are

placing their assets in to the project. Spokesman, Mike Hoskins from Toddington explained, “The group have high standards of restoration and historical accuracy is paramount, this will give the project an authentic feel which will keep visitors coming back to see more.” More announcements

Our older members have lead by example. J15’s Robert Young and Arran Bennett won silver medals in their double scull both at the National Schools Regatta and at the British Rowing National Junior Championships held this year in Strathclyde. WJ15 Deanna RadleyMoore combined with

J17 Jenna Roberts also in the double sculls to win the silver medal in the WJ18 ‘Championship’ event – a truly outstanding achievement. Although very young Deanna has already been to GB selection trials and will go again next year alongside a number of our other athletes who are now showing the potential to compete at the very highest level. Perhaps the most rewarding day this season however was our entry into Trentham Regatta where all our crews did well enough to gather sufficient points

to win the junior Victor Ludorum prize of £500. This has been put towards the £25,000 we need to raise in order to purchase an eight seat boat now urgently needed if we are to take on the bigger schools and clubs at major events. AB Severn was started in conjunction with Tewkesbury School and now trains young athletes from several other schools including Hanley Castle, Pershore, Winchcome, Balcarras, Sir Thomas Riches, Pates, Bredon Hill and Kings.

5 COMMON PROBLEMS PEOPLE ARE HAVING WITH WINDOWS 10 There is absolutely no question that the response to Windows 10 has been overwhelmingly positive. True, anything would seem like a huge improvement compared to the disaster that was Windows 8. But people love that the Start Menu has made its triumphant return and replaced the Start screen that everyone hated so much, and new features like Cortana and the Edge web browser are big checks in the pro column as well. Of course, nothing is perfect. In these early days, you can expect to run into a fair number of issues with Windows 10. First, it’s an early release — in fact, Microsoft has already released its first big Windows 10 update just one day after launch. Second, as great as the response has been so far… it’s still Windows, so there will inevitable be some bumps on the road. If you do update to Windows 10 in these early days these are

some of the common problems you may encounter. 1. Activation issues First and foremost, some people are reporting difficulty activating Windows 10 once it’s installed. The bad news is there’s really nothing you can do on your end to fix it. The good news, however, is that this issue usually resolves itself after a few minutes. 2. Chrome is crazy Chrome browser users are running into a bunch of problems with bogging and slow-downs, especially which performing heavy tasks like streaming video. We’ll have to wait for Google to iron out the bugs but in the meantime, killing all your extensions will help a

bit. If that doesn’t help, try reinstalling Chrome. 3. Where are my favourites? The new Edge browser is so much better than Internet Explorer. To be fair, it would be difficult to make a browser worse than IE, but Edge is a nice simple browser that’s quick and clean. But where are your favourites? Click the … button to open the menu and then click Settings. Scroll to Import favourites from another browser, and then choose your old browser and click Import. 4. Folder fail According to some users, there actually is one area where Windows 8 is better than Windows 10: The email app in Windows 10 doesn’t allow people to create subfolders when organizing their email. For most people, this is hardly an issue. Unfortunately for people who do have an issue with it, there’s no fix for the time being. 5. Connectivity complaints A number of Windows 10 users are complaining that their

Wi-Fi is cutting out and it won’t reconnect. This is actually a pretty common problem across all versions of Windows, and the fix is the same as it is for Windows 8, Windows 7, and every other version out there: Reboot. Some users have said that disabling Wi-Fi sharing helps make Wi-Fi connectivity a bit more stable. CARE TO SING 'Care to sing' is the monthly singing session for people with memory problems, and their carers or companions, and is now a well-established part of the Tewkesbury scene. The group was started with the support of the Barnwood Trust two years ago, and meets at the Tewkesbury Day Centre in Station Road, by kind permission of the manager. “We're there on the second Wednesday of every month, so the next one will be on the 14th of October”, says leader

Penny Powell. “After some friendly chat over tea and cakes, we enjoy a happy hour or more, singing lots of old favourite tunes together, many from our own songbook”. The sessions run from 2pm to 4pm, often with a theme, but with plenty of opportunity for participants to ask for their

TEWKESBURY PINK RUN FUN October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Bookworm Tewkesbury is organising a Pink Fun Run on Sunday October 11th to raise money for Cancer Research UK. This will be our first run but we hope that it will become an annual event. The run will start at the Wheatpiece’s Community Centre in Walton Cardiff at 10am. The 6k course is mainly flat and it will be possible to run or walk just 3k if preferred. Entrants must be over

HISTORIC RELIC SAVED A railway waiting shelter from a long gone railway in the Cotswolds has a new home at Toddington Station. Saved by the Restoration and Archiving Trust the shelter was from the remote station at Foss Cross on the Midland and South Western railway which ran from Cheltenham, to Andover in Hampshire. Since the line was closed in the 1960s the shelter disappeared in undergrowth, and was retrieved to shelter large museum outdoor exhibits to prevent deterioration.

It includes a variety of behaviour covering selfish and unacceptable activity that can blight the quality of community life. Examples including: • Nuisance neighbours • Intimidating groups taking over public spaces • Vandalism and graffiti • People taking and buying drugs on the street • People dumping rubbish and abandoning vehicles • Anti-social drinking.

Sometimes, anti-social behaviour may be targeted at specific individuals or households; however, anti-social behaviour can also be a result of more general circumstances such as noise nuisance from an organised event. Tackling and reporting anti-social behaviour. Speak to your local anti- social behaviour co-ordinator. To find out

who this is you can visit www.respect.gov.uk and put in your post code. Anti- social behaviour can also be a crime. If this is the case it should be reported to the Police. Don’t drift through life: take stock of where you are going It is so easy to drift through life. Too easy to let one day simply roll into another without noticing, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. We can say that we are too busy to notice the passing of time. We must never allow ourselves to think that we are too busy to see and examine the quality of that passing time. Every now and then we need to stop and take stock of where we have been and where we are going. We need to stop to allow our batteries time to recharge. If we try to cram too much into our lives the time tends to get cluttered and we are for ever racing to catch up with ourselves and our plans. Everything suffers and we start to blame ourselves and the momentum is totally disrupted. I urge you to make time to stop and take stock. "Me time" is essential. You owe it to yourself and will very likely function better when you begin to allow some " me time" into your life. If this is, in your eyes, being selfish then I urge you to BE selfish ! I offer you a challenge in this column today, and I urge you to take it up. I challenge you to STOP and THINK. Ideally I would wish for you to do this every day BUT i realise that initially this will appear to be difficult or impossible to some people so you could start off with once or twice a week.

The important thing is that you DO TRY IT ! You will soon see why I recommend it ! GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO TAKE TIME OUT AND DO THIS. When the end of the day draws near TAKE TIME to STOP - go off into a QUIET place and LOOK BACK over your day. Have you been KIND and THOUGHTFUL in what you have done, or UNKIND and THOUGHTLESS? Have you kept your TEMPER under CONTROL or have you LOST the plot and then LOST your TEMPER when things have not gone your way ? Have you been PLEASANT and APPROACHABLE,or MISERABLE and GROUCHY ? Have you INSPIRED the people you have met, or have you DEPRESSED and DISCOURAGED them? Have you DONE something CREATIVE and WORTH WHILE or have you WASTED the day with SILLY, UNPRODUCTIVE or AIMLESS things? Have you been HONEST and FAIR in the various things that you’ve done? Have you BOOSTED the MOMENTS OF JOY AND HAPPINESS in the lives of OTHERS or have you THOUGHT only of

YOURSELF? Have you WIDENED your MENTAL HORIZON? DEVELHave you OPED your PERSONALITY ? Have you GROWN larger in stature, or SHRUNK smaller as a result of your day's actions and thoughts? What we do each and every day determines what we become. Every hour we actual-

ly build and develop our lives for better or for worse A daily checklist, such as this one that I place before you today, will help to keep you on the right track, You will be heading towards your greatest goals and most sincere ideals.
