It’s all happening in Tewkesbury this autumn, with the Mop Fair set to return to the town centre on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October. Three important exhibitions took place in the town last month too, staged by Friends of the Earth, Tewkesbury 2030 and HSHAZ Regenerate the High Street. The Tewkesbury 2030 exhibition, co-ordinated by Cllr. Vernon Smith, gave visitors a chance to look at plans and discuss them with representatives of the various agencies of future projects. Topics included the new Northway bridge, housing development and proposals for the relief road. 䡵 Friends of the Earth show at the Methodist Church 26, Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth held an event at the Methodist Church on Saturday 18th September. Spokesperson Cate Cody said: “There were EV bikes and cars, guided walks to local green spaces, talks regarding Tewkesbury rejuvenation, carbon footprinting, waste reduction, green energy, flooding and poetry. ”There were a steady number of participants throughout the day and it is hoped that the event will be repeated.” Tewkesbury Borough Council’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) Programme

Jane Adeane, a doctor's daughter and nurse resides in Bath helping her father in his practice. She is much loved by her patients, even known as the "Angel of the Baths", her life is mundane, but fulfilling. However a surprise proposal of marriage from her father's assistant, Dr. Valentine Ross, leads Jane to flee the city to stay with her much loved Aunt in London. Emmeline Adeane is an artist and free spirit and introduces Jane in to her society where she discovers love with Julietta, the wife of a publisher. Her conventional life is turned upside down while she sits demurely, the subject of her aunt's latest painting. She eventually returns somewhat reluctantly to help her father, whose household has disintegrated after the departure of Jane who ran all things smoothly and efficiently. Valentine Ross himself is an important figure throughout the book, he is devastated after Jane walks out of the tea room in which he had proposed to her. The tea room is a new venture run by Irish immigrant Clorinda Morrisey, and he entices her to help Dr Adeane by providing pies for the household after the departure of their cook. She in her own right, after starting out as a very minor character, grows in importance, and provides her own sub-story as the novel develops. Meanwhile out in Borneo we meet Sir Ralph Savage, a British "rajah" with eccentric tastes, lavish spending, and his servant, and bed

companion, Leon. Savage is master of all he surveys, but is also a puppet to Leon's whims. Into their grand household comes Edmond Ross, a naturalist who is recovering from malaria, and it is here the two parts of this novel are loosely connected by the siblings. We learn about Valentine and Edmund's upbringing; as ever Rose Tremain provides her readers with very full characterisations of her principal individuals. Back in England, Jane a reluctant returnee to Bath and conformity agrees to marry Valentine. How this arrangement unfolds, against the back ground of her passion for Julietta, and whilst we witness the lives of her father and Clorinda, provides a very fulfilling read, as all their lives are revealed to the reader. The Borneo story sees Savage and Leon pursue personal egotistic projects, fight disease in the ever invasive jungle and the threats to life and livelihood. Rose Tremain is a storyteller of note, her novels, diverse in subject and time-setting. In "Islands of Mercy" she uncovers the lives and loves of a myriad of characters. Steam and diesel celebrate 40 years of the GWSR The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is rounding off its 40th Anniversary celebrations with an ‘anything goes’ gala over the weekend of 6th and 7th November. The railway will be a hive of activity, running its four operational steam locomotives and four of its magnificent historic diesel locomotives to an intensive timetable, which will see more than thirty train arrivals and departures from Toddington station each day.

Apart from the intensive timetable which will feature non-stop trains, double-heading and of course no fewer than eight locomotives, the railway’s workshops will be thrown open for visitors to enjoy. In addition, the delightful narrow-gauge railway at Toddington will also be operating, adding to the event’s appeal.

Visitors will be able to view locomotives under overhaul or restoration inside the David Page Locomotive Workshops at Toddington and chat to volunteers manning information stands relating to their particular projects. And, at Winchcombe, the Carriage & Wagon workshops, where the railway’s immaculate coaches are overhauled and maintained, will be open too. Other visitor opportunities include a chance to enjoy a steam locomotive footplate ride, by prior application (extremely limited numbers available) for just £150 including entry to the event. It’s also hoped to run a demonstration freight train, with opportunities to ride on the brake van. GWSR Plc was created in 1981 to acquire and rebuild as much as possible of the former Stratford-upon-Avon to Cheltenham main line, which opened throughout in 1906. It was closed in 1976 and infrastructure removed during 1979-1980 after which British Rail agreed to release the vacant trackbed. The

new company took occupation of a derelict Toddington station yard and organised a highly successful share launch

which enabled the foundations of the heritage line to be established. Since then, the railway has grown year by

year, rebuilt almost entirely by volunteer effort and today operates services over fourteen miles of stunning

scenery between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway. For more details visit the website www.gwsr.com

KICKSTART @ TEWKESBURY CO-WORKING We have been delighted to welcome three new Kickstart employees to Tewkesbury Co-Working in the last two months. Three of our members Sonicbond Publishing, Reward Risk Management Ltd and Treetop Property all run their businesses from Tewkesbury Co-Working and the excellent office space has given them the confidence to employ new staff through the Governments Kickstart scheme. Co-Working owner Gill Downes said that she was “delighted that not only did the space offer flexibility for its users but it was also enabling new employment, particularly of youngsters”. Reward Risk Management Ltd and Treetop Property were both based at the Co-Working facilities already, however Sonicbond Publishing purposely moved their business there on a part time basis to enable them to employ a new kickstart worker. Stephen Lambe, who runs Tewkesbury-based Sonicbond Publishing, says that ‘while I continue to

work from home for part of the week, having the Exchange in place locally allows me to spend part of the week with my Kickstart employee in a very flexible way without having to finance a permanent office. That it’s a very pleasant and spacious working environment is a bonus.’ Jane Baalam of Reward Risk Management added that the modern, light and air-conditioned space was “perfect for her and her new Kickstart employee and was an excellent working environment”. Two of them are on the Co-Working flexi-tariff and Treetop Property uses the permanent tariff. Gill Downes added that ‘We treat all new enquiries individually and we like to understand what it is they need and tailor a package for them if our standard packages don’t fit their needs.’ When we first launched Tewkesbury Co-Working in late March 2020 we did so in the confidence that market data, and research, clearly indicated a growing demand for shared workspace

especially in the office market. Clearly, this was more about City working but we saw no reason why Towns, perhaps villages and maybe countryside locations would not follow. What we did not predict was a pandemic and that we would have to close and reopen three times before we could properly drive the business forwards. This has led to much wider uses than may have otherwise occurred, which has helped the local community: • Meeting rooms • Presentations • BOB Club meetings • Workshops • Single day tariffs for holiday makers and short term stays • Team away sessions / • Photocopying scanning / printing Gill said “we have been very lucky to have supportive members who value the space and local people who are keen to support us by using the facilities despite the frustration of opening and closing three times over the last 12 months”. The Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Committee are delighted to announce that plans are in place for the 2021 Christmas Market to go ahead on Sunday 21st November. A new exciting itinerary is afoot as the event expands into two more streets, with attractions and market stalls in Barton Street, Church Street and the High Street. There will also be free parking in all of the Tewkesbury Borough Council owned car parks within the town centre. The Christmas Market promises to be an exciting day! There is an increase in the amount of festive stalls, and where possible they will be in the centre of the street, so as to provide better access to the shops. Businesses in the streets have been encouraged to open up their doors for further shopping during the day. Attractions include, Father Christmas and his reindeer, 100 market stalls, children’s fair rides, falconry display, mu-

sic entertainment from the Ukulele and Town Training Band’s, The ‘King Arthur’ Roses Theatre Pantomime cast, plus much more! Gone are the days of Father Christmas getting stuck in the Cherry Picker above the Town Hall! This year, a main stage will be erected next to the Cross to broaden the area for people to gather at 1700 when the lights are switched on by Father Christmas and special guests. All three streets will be viewable and will ease congestion afterwards. A full traffic redirection to avoid the roads named above has been agreed and will be closed on the day of the event from 0700 until 2000. All vehicles in those streets will need to be removed before midnight going into Sunday morning. A full detailed plan will be available on the Christmas Lights website in due course. To help raise funds, this year we will be selling Christmas tree badges, they will be available in town centre shops from October. Please also visit our Justgiving

Severn Unit MVS Goes Offshore Again!

Despite their last two June offshore training trips being cancelled due to Covid restrictions Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members were pleased when they were able to take four boats out of Sharpness and down the Severn Estuary at the end of August. Head of Unit Nic Price said “This training trip went extremely well and enabled 12 members to navigate to Portishead and then into Bristol. Several new members joined us for the trip and gained valuable experience in boat handling, navigation and VHF skills. Will Fish must be congratulated on being cox’n of the Unit’s training boat Minerva for the first time.”

Young Summer Connolly, whose family have run the Bnatural Group since 2018, has opened up a venture producing cosmetics using natural ingredients. The brand Summer has created, Magical Makes, runs alongside Bnatural’s cosmetics. All are 100% natural, and eco friendly. They include supplements for sport and well-being, face oils and creams, drops, drinks and pet products - all created and blended by the family in Tewkesbury. Summer’s first range of hemp-based lip balms comes in four varieties. “Hemp is magical,” said Summer. “It can help with so many things so I thought I would see what I could do. “My dad makes loads of products, but I thought I would start my brand with popular cherry lip balms.” Summer’s balms are made using premium hemp seed oil and natural flavouring to give the lips a soothing treat. Mitton Village Green Summer Show

The residents around Mitton Green held their Summer Show on Bank Holiday Monday. Despite the lack of sunshine, there was a good turn-out and plenty of entries for the various competitions. Cate Cody, our newly elected Green County Councillor came along to help judge the vegetables, but one of the younger generation got the best job – judging the cakes and biscuits!

Finally we meet again after 19 months! Our first meeting in our new home was attended by many old friends and alot of new faces - welcome to all. Our guest was milliner Carole Bowler. Her journey started when she was singing 40s and 50s songs and decided to have a go at making hats and fascinators to reﬂect the era. She enjoyed this so much she decided to study millinery. She has attended competitions and hat festivals in France and Majorca, and London Hat Week in the Shard. She brought along a few creations explaining the complicated and painstaking process needed to construct them. Carole then showed us a very easy fascinator to make from bits and bobs which we all have around the home, including a very beautiful tissue ﬂower to adorn it. Many thanks to Carole. The first 1001 days of life, from conception to age 2 years, lay the foundations and literally shapes the future for our children. As well as this I know from experience how self-care can be put to the bottom of the list of priorities when a woman enters motherhood, yet infants rely entirely on their mother being well, mentally and physically. As the saying goes ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’. In short my classes are all about teaching

the power of love and connection, providing a safe and supportive space for parents to connect with their

baby, themselves and each other. I am a fully qualified holistic therapist specialising in maternity

massage and reflexology. My background is in Early Years and I have been teaching baby massage for the

last 10 years. I am so excited to be introducing my new baby reflexology classes and there is more in store

Then and Now: Station Road Local people like me must have been mystified to see this preparatory fence appear in Station Road which has for some years been bereft of regular pruning, writes John Dixon. The delightful WWI photograph reveals the wellbuilt wall – then 50 years old and perhaps 2 metres high – the clear footpath and the smooth road surface (despite horse droppings) with the then new houses (A) in Cotswold Gardens to the rear. In the past 50 years since the 1961 closure of the line, much has changed with new homes (B) being built in Cotswold Gardens on the ample between the 1900 Houses (A) and the wall. It appears that if the modern vegetation is tidied then residents will lose their privacy. There are plans being considered by the County Council that “Hit and Miss Fencing” will be erected. Public comments are invited in advance of the decision - but one hope that the plans will include restoration of that fine wall and footpath as a basis for this fence.

BLACK BELT AND ACCREDITATION SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTOR Five students from the White Tiger Martial Arts Academy based at the Wheatpieces Community Centre in Tewkesbury have been promoted to 1st degree (1st Dan) and 2nd degree (2nd Dan) Black Belts after a gruelling National Ch’ang-Hon Taekwon-Do Association Black Belt grading held on Saturday 21st August 2021. Rhys Clingan (12), Caitlin Leonard-Dean (17), Matthew Bourton and Andrew Etherington have all been promoted to 1st Degree Black Belts whilst Rhys’s father Rob Clingan was promoted to 2nd Degree Black Belt. They all had to perform various disciplines that included advanced leg and hand techniques, Self-Defence, set sparring combinations,

performing patterns, advanced self-defence, pressure point applications and board breaking techniques. Everything rested on their performances on the day, but dedication, correct preparation and good instruction ensured their success. Mr Wanklyn said: “It was a special moment for me, not only because I’ve been promoted, but per-

5 County Trophies for Beckford Tennis Club Juniors Beckford Tennis Club junior players have had an incredibly successful season playing in the Gloucestershire County League. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

PERSHORE’S WATER MEADOWS As autumn progresses and the scent of winter is in the early morning air, there’s nothing I like better than a stroll along the river bank, writes Jack B. Walker. Pershore is a delightful market town with some fine Georgian architecture, and this month’s walk takes us along some elegant streets as well as footpaths and boardwalks of a unique wetland nature reserve.

䡵 Distance: approx. 3 miles; flat, riverside walk (NB: the walk is not possible when the river is in flood). 䡵 Car Parking: use the car park at Avon Meadows, near Pershore Football Club. 䡵 Refreshments: plenty of options in Pershore Town Centre. Following the catastrophic floods in 2007, a collaborative project between Wychavon and Worcs County Councils, and the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, created the Avon Meadows. This 24 hectare community wetland serves as haven for wildlife, reduces the impact of flooding, and is a pleasant spot to walk and study nature just five minutes away from the attractive town centre. It has its own car park, but there is also plenty of public parking near the leisure centre and at the abbey park. Our walk starts from Avon Meadows car park: head down to the bank of the Avon (1) and turn left along the tow path. Keep the river to your right, and as it bends towards Wyre Mill follow the path across towards the corner of the field.(2). Turn left to the far corner (3), and then bear left, back towards the community wetland reserve. Upon entry, you can follow a variety of boardwalks and paths, and even view wildlife

䡵 Looking towards Wyre Mill from a hide if you wish. When you exit the reserve, follow the path back to the car park, (4) then turn right to reach the road. Pershore Market is opposite. Turn right, and follow the road around to its junction with the High Street (5), and turn left. Cross the road with care, and turn right into Church Street (6) to walk down to Pershore Abbey. The great Norman church (7) fell victim to the dissolution of the monasteries in the mid sixteenth century. Further damage to the building occurred in the late seventeenth century, and a hundred years

later the structure was damaged by a great storm. In 1864 it was restored under the architectural guidance of Gilbert Scott; then shortly before the first world war the flying buttresses at the main entrance were added. Today you can trace the outline of the once mighty abbey - and its well-landscaped park, with some interesting tree carvings, is pleasant to stroll through. Walk around the abbey and exit onto road, turning right and then right again at the bottom of Broad Street (8) - a fine wide square with a car park at its

centre. Walk along Defford Road, and look for a path on your left near Pershore Cricket and Sports Club,(9). Walk the full length of the alleyway, skirting around the cricket pitch and back gardens of houses to exit on to Bridge Street. (10). Cross over the road with care, and turn right. Walk out of town and then bear left to cross over the original Pershore Bridge (11). There is a small picnic area here by the river. Construction on the old bridge was started in the fifteenth century by monks from the abbey. Legend has it that some of the stone to build it was taken from the ruined Elmley Castle, on Bredon Hill. Walk back to point (11), then ahead along the street. Here are some of the finest red brick houses in Pershore. Pass Broad Street, turn right into the ASDA entrance (12) then over the car park towards the Leisure Centre. Turn left by the football ground, then right to the car park.

Hindlimb Lameness in dogsWhat we can do to help! Cruciate ligament injury is the most common cause of acute and chronic hindlimb lameness in dogs and appears to be on the increase in the last few years. There are lots of potential factors for this increase in cases but genetics also play their part. Certain breeds such as Labradors, Springer Spaniels, Rottweilers and Staffordshire Bull Terrier seem to be over represented with cruciate ligament injuries due to progressive changes that weaken the ligament prior to rupturing. This is different to humans where rupture is often linked to sport injuries. The cranial cruciate ligament staIllustration of a dogs bilises the stifle stifle joint by preventing the shin bone (tibia) moving in front of the thigh bone (femur).

Diagnosing a torn or partially torn cruciate ligament generally requires X-rays and manipulation of the dogs knee joint under a sedation. We look for instability on palpation together with radiographic evidence of developing arthritis. It may be necessary to take a sample of fluid (synovial fluid) from the knee and send it to a laboratory for analysis. Surgical decision making is evidence based and the evidence is that a surgical technique referred to as a Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) gives the best short and, more importantly, long term outcomes to dogs suffering from a torn cruciate.

If it gets stretched or torn it causes pain and instability of the knee which manifests as a lameness. Other signs which may suggest rupture are, knee joint pain and difficulty with rising and jumping. Ligament rupture can lead to damage of other important structures within the knee such as the cartilage pads or menisci which are required for “cushioning” of the knee. A torn menisci also leads to ongoing knee pain.

Spectacular light and sound show will take over Tewkesbury Abbey this November The Tewkesbury Festival of Lights will feature light projections and will take place inside the Abbey between Tuesday 2nd and Friday 5th November at 20-minute intervals between 6pm – 10pm. This will then be followed by Tewkesbury’s annual free Fireworks display and fairground, which will take place in The Pageant Meadow behind the Abbey on Saturday 6th November. We had a very interesting and informative talk by Fraser Gunn presenting his first face-to-face talk since the pandemic started. His subject was the life-saving work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Fraser’s talk was in two parts, first a detailed description of the history of the RNLI, with some remarkable facts about the Institution’s early days when eight men would row the lifeboat in horrendous conditions out to the vessel in distress and its crew. Contrast that with the high-tech lifeboats in use today which interestingly are constructed in the UK at the RNLI’s own boat building yard. Many people including myself often feel that the RNLI is effectively an emergency service like the Ambulance service devoted to rescuing people at risk and should therefore be financed by the Government. Fraser explained that the Institution is fiercely proud of its independence and the fact that it is staffed almost totally by volunteers - the last thing they

need is bureaucrats meddling in the way the Institution is run. Our next speaker Roy Thomas was also experiencing his first face-to-face presentation since the pandemic and he gave us an in-depth presentation about two military aircraft, the TSR2 and the Avro Arrow, commissioned by the UK and the Canadian Governments respectively in the 1950’s and 60’s. Despite being two totally different types of aircraft both of them suffered from huge cost overruns, government incompetence and both were scrapped before being put into service at an enormous cost to taxpayers. Even though it is still early days in getting Probus Club back to relative normality, we have already had some guests coming along to our meetings with a view to joining us, so if you are a retired or semi-retired professional or businessman and would enjoy the company of like-minded individuals, you are very welcome without obligation to come along to one of our meetings

Mitton Manor Pre-School said goodbye to one of our long-standing staff members, Jane Moore, who retired from our group in July. Jane has worked at our pre-school for 25 years, from the early days when we were in terrapin buildings in the grounds of the primary school, through to the move to our new, purpose-built setting. She has been a hugely valued member of our staff team in her role as Deputy Manager, bringing her love of music and creativity to our pre-school, with the children enjoying her wonderful story-telling. SPINAL DISC HEALTH

Spinal discs are situated between each vertebra. They function as cushions for the forces through the spine, stabilising structures and ﬁbrous joints. Disc health is very important in order to maintain good spinal health. The discs are made up of a fibrous biconcave structure with a gel like substance in the middle. This allows for shearing and compressive forces to be absorbed by the disc rather than these forces causing problems to the vertebrae themselves. When a disc is under severe compressive forces the gel like substance gets pushed to one side, this creates pressure and causes the fibrous outer casing to move away from the pressure, resulting in a prolapse. Much like squeezing a doughnut until the jam squirts out!

Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to put the disc back into place. If you suffer a disc prolapse, gentle articulation, traction and pain relief will enable the pain to ease and mobility to be maintained. This results in the hardening of the prolapsed tissue and they body will smooth this down. The prolapse will remain and in se-

vere cases surgery may be required in order to take the pressure off the nerves and limit referral pain. In order to maintain disc health, it is necessary to practice safe lifting and limit twisting movements. Twisting the body with load, such as when shovelling soil or sand can be irritating to discs and such movements must be done with care and using the core muscles to aid with stability. The spinal discs are 90% water and dehydration is a common problem. Maintaining a steady 2 litres of fluid a day will help reduce the chance of dehydration of these structures and therefore maintain their health. By Katie Hogg T. 01684 294777

The intensity depends on the amount of sunshine and the temperature they are exposed to. bout excess hair loss. Too much hair is swallowed causing gastritis or even bowel obstruction. To keep this risk under control they may regurgitate (hairball throw up) not pleasant. The other problem occurs if the cat is not grooming himself en-

ough. This may be due to old age, illness or some cats have just never mastered the art of proper grooming. This excess dead fluff can cause clumpy build up and matts leading to a grumpy uncomfortable cat. A good de-fluff groom should keep the matts and knots away, reduce hairballs and related tummy problems. The 2021 River Severn Shad Run This has been a momentous but unusual year for the annual run of twaite shad on the River Severn. Shad are an endangered sea-dwelling fish related to the herring, but every year they migrate onto the River Severn to come upriver to spawn. Since 2017 trained volunteers in Tewkesbury have given their time to support a citizen science effort to monitor the shad run at the Upper Lode Weir by the Severn Ham water meadows. The first shad were spotted at Upper Lode Weir in late April but then the weather sud-

ing through on 9th May. Cameras were also installed to record video footage and online volunteers are welcome to review the videos at www.unlockingthesevern.co.uk/how-tocount-shad/ and contribute important citizen science count data. So far, an amazing 21

different species have been detected swimming through the pass.

Most gardens will use fertiliser of some sort, even if it’s the addition of organic matter to the soil, writes Tim Hoskins. There is often good reason for adding it, but where it comes from and what happens to the components is perhaps less well known. Firstly, the difference between organic and mineral fertilisers. ‘Organic’ in horticulture has two meanings. It can refer to something that is derived from decomposed plant or animal matter (e.g. compost) or it can refer to something that is free of human-made chemical inputs. So something organic, might not be organic. To explain this, if you put a teabag made from paper reinforced with plastics into your compost, your compost will contain microplastics. Organic fertilisers are generally better for

Tim Hoskins plants than mineral fertilisers, if health is more important than quick results, but they are not necessarily environmentally friendly – where does the fish come from in blood, fish and bone fertiliser? Mineral fertilisers are mined, in the case of potassium (K) and Phosphorous (P), with associated environmental damage and extracted from the air, in the case of nitrogen (N). N is

abundant but uses an estimated 1-2% of global energy consumption to extract it from the air. N is also highly unstable in solid form so doesn’t stay in the soil profile for long at all. It has a nasty habit of finding its way into watercourses, along with P, causing eutrophication and ruining aquatic ecosystems. For local evidence of this, look at the river Wye this year compared to 2020.

Anna Richards grew up across the county border in Worcestershire, but her childhood memories and formative years center very much around Tewkesbury.
