A handmade tiled sign recording some of the history of Hughes Alley has been erected on the wall of the medieval walkway leading from Barton Street to the Swilgate river. The work was made and donated by mother and daughter, Lezli Lawrence & Verity Lannie and depicts a cow and cat (pictured right). The cow is because of Joe Hughes, a former resident of the alley, and the cat is based on Verity’s own pet! Over the next 18 months, Alleycat will be seeking funding for further works from local amateur and professional artists, and there will be a series of workshops for local residents to get creative with arts and crafts projects in the alleys. Actor, singer and producer David Hasselhoff was a surprise visitor to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway last month. The Baywatch and Knight Rider star, who was once ‘the most watched man on TV’ dropped by for a ride on the award winning heritage railway while holidaying in the Cotswolds. ‘The Hoff’ is not the first celebrity to steam out of Toddington. Other past passengers include Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall and the late Gary Coleman.

The Crossing by Andrew Miller PB £7.99 This novel tells the story of the lives of Tim and Maud, though it is Maud who is the central character. She comes from a working background, brought up in Swindon, where her grandfather instils a love of sailing. At University Maud is involved with the college sailing club, and when helping to renovate the club's yacht has an accident that will change her life forever. When it is out of the water she falls off the boat, hits the ground, but surprisingly gets up and walks away from the scene only later to collapse, and be rushed off to the hospital. Though a stranger, it is fellow student and boat club member Tim Rathbone who accompanies Maud to hospital, sits by her bedside as she recovers, and then takes her home to his flat to recuperate. These administrations eventually lead to a relationship, blossoming love and subsequent marriage. The boatyard, along with supporting characters, including local boatsman Robert Currey, form part of their lives, and of this story. Maud and Tim buy a run down boat called ‘Lodestar,’ renovate, and then sail her. Tim has a private income, the Rathbones being local landowners, provide a cottage for the newly weds, where Tim can indulge his love of music, while Maud follows a scientific roll in industry. So when baby Zoe comes along it is Tim who becomes house

husband and father while Maud's career develops, which inevitably helps to part the couple on to ever more separating paths. However when tragedy strikes Maud eventually packs a bag, and goes down once again to the boatyard. There, with Robert's help, she makes ‘Lodestar’ seaworthy and sails off on a deep sea voyage of adventure and discovery to try and make some sense out of her life. The boy meets girl story-line, and how their lives evolve is solely the introduction of this book. How family pressures and their differing upbringings influence their relationship expands this aspect. It is the nautical theme that takes this novel so far above many other reads. HEDGEHOGS AND BONFIRE NIGHT In late autumn, hedgehogs hunt out a home for winter hibernation, writes Caroline Gould. They look for dry places such as spaces under garden sheds, in a compost heap, homemade hedgehog houses or under hedges. Unfortunately for them, this is also the season for bonfires, large heaps of dry wood that look like perfect homes for them. Top tips for keeping hedgehogs out 1. If collecting wood for your bonfire before the day, make sure to keep it under tarpaulin or in a shed. 2. Make sure to not construct the bonfire until the actual day of your festivities. 3. If not kept under or in anything, be sure to move your pile to a different spot on the day, so you can check for hedgehogs. 4. If having a large bonfire that needs to be built in advance, place chicken wire one metre high around the area, held in place with stakes and angled outwards so that the hedgehogs cannot climb it. This will also keep other wildlife, pets and children away from the construction. 5. Before lighting, shine a torch into the stack and listen for a hissing sound. This is the noise hedgehogs sometimes make when disturbed. If you find a hedgehog, it is important to look after it, and only release it once the bonfire and fireworks are over so as not to fright-

en it. In normal circumstances, unless the hedgehog is in danger or you believe it needs help, it is best to leave them alone. How to care for hedgehogs if found 1. Wear gardening gloves so as not to get the scent of human on them, to minimise stress to them and save your hands from spines. 2. If you spot a hedgehog in your bonfire, use a pole or broom handle to lift the pile. 3. Take as much of the nest as you can and place in a high sided cardboard box, with holes in the top, lined with newspaper and old towelling. 4. Make sure the lid is firmly secured, or they will climb out and may injure themselves. 5. Place the box in a shed or garage away from the bonfire and noise of fireworks that will scare them. 6. Give them meaty dog/cat food and some fresh water. 7. Once the bonfire is totally damped down, release the hedgehog under a hedge, bush or behind a stack of logs with more food and water. 8. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society The Halifax Works was once a tannery and commemorated the celebrated book, ‘John Halifax, Gentleman’, written by Mrs. Craik in 1844, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. Mrs Craik only visited for a day and, after the book became famous, there was an earnest endeavour to claim ownership of the sites she mentioned. At least this site was a tannery. In 1890, however, tanning ceased and it was occupied by ironmongers as their workshop for their 3-4 High Street shops - firstly they belonged to Milner and then Sam Handley. These two firms seemed to be rivals in producing agricultural implements. Afterwards the named building, commemorating John Halifax, was demolished by 1955 as part of the planning for the Riverside Walk. The failure to demolish the Boathouse meant that the path was never used. Having hosted the HQ for the Popular Angling Association and also a weightlifting studio, the remaining buildings were demolished to provide this new housing complex. At least the new houses to the rear are called ‘Tannery Mews!’

TWYNING STORES RAISE A DOUBLE Twyning Village Stores has donated £200 to Twyning Chapel for Youth Club and TNT (The Nearly Teens) Club. Both clubs are part of Twyning Chapel’s Youth work provision in Twyning, which also includes Dinkies and GLOW for the younger children. The £200 has been raised by the store’s NISA Making a Difference Locally Limited and was presented to Tom Brown and Gemma Hall on Friday 13th October by Katie from Twyning Village Stores. MAKING A DIFFERENCE LOCALLY Tewkesbury VIPs is a monthly social club for local visually impaired people.

The generosity of local volunteers makes the club possible. They pick up and take members to the meetings where we enjoy musical entertainment including old-time music hall, a ukulele band and groups singing and playing popular songs. We also have outings to local schools and an annual cream tea on board the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire steam railway from Toddington.

There is no external funding and we rely upon donations from social enterprise and local businesses for raffle prizes and catering supplies for meetings. All members also receive a card and small gift on their birthdays; you don’t get many cards and gifts when you are in your eighties and nineties. Following the initiative shown by TVIP supporter Glenys Holdcroft, Company Manager for

The event, which annually draws hundreds of visitors to the town centre will take place during the late afternoon of the last Saturday of November with the switch on taking place at 5.30. The Christmas Lights are organised by Bishops Cleeve Chamber of Commerce. The lights will be switched on by Father Christmas at 5.00pm on the 26 November. AROUND THE WOODLAND Tiddesley Wood, managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, covers around 200 acres and is believed to date back over 6,000 years, writes Jack B. Walker. Tiddesley is situated on an elevated position above the river Avon on the outskirts of Pershore - an attractive little market town. Park in the Trust’s car park on the Besford Bridge Road, about half a mile west of the town. Although the woods offer some lovely walks and are especially enjoyable in Autumn, we will follow a slightly different route to take in some lovely views of the sur-

rounding countryside. Leave the car park and join the track which leads to the woods. At the edge of the wood, bear left (1) and follow the path which skirts the trees between two fences. Keep following this path around the perimeter, with the trees on your right. Eventually you will emerge into some meadows (with picnic tables) and meet another path (2). Straight ahead of

The view to Pershore Abbey you can see the imposing stone tower of Pershore Abbey, looking down the Vale of Evesham with the Lenches in the distance. Turn right along the path, walking in a southerly direction. Ahead of you now is one of the best views of Bredon Hill in its entirety. This is the scarp side of the limestone outlier of the Cotswolds, which is often referred to as ‘the stranded whale’ because of the way it rises above the flat plain. FIREWORKS Tewkesbury Rotary Club has had a very active summer with a successful Classic Vehicle Festival which raised over £14000 for the charity fund. Recently the club has donated £3000 to the Midlands Air Ambulance when members visited the base at Strensham along with a classic MG showing the date for the event next year. The next main event for the Rotary Club is the annual Bonfire & Fireworks display on the Vineyards behind the Abbey. This year it is on Saturday November 5th and has always been a very popular event with a funfair and food. There is no admission charge but hopefully visitors will give a donation to the charity fund. Recent club meetings have included an illus-

trated talk about South Georgia, a talk about the Rotary Young Leader Award by a student from Tewkesbury School who attended the course this year and a demonstration of the use of the defibrillator. The club has recently donated two defibrillators to the town, one located at the Abbey and one at the Roses Theatre.

NEW PRESIDENT SWINGS INTO ACTION Mike Hurley, new president of the Old Theocsbrians Society, got into the swing of his year in office by presenting prizes at the Society's annual pre-dinner golf competition - and playing into third place himself. The competition, at Sherdons Golf Club, Tredington, near Tewkesbury, was won by Bill Newman, 37 pts, followed by John Brown, 35, and Mike Hurley, 34, with the house winners being Ferrers. “We are always on the look out for new players - whatever your

standard you will be most welcome, and we can guarantee there will be others of a similar standard. We were pleased to see newcomer Paul Cherry this year, as well as regular competitor John Bayliss, who says he's not a golfer but still manages a reasonable swing” said Mike. Bill Newman, winner of the Lannen Cup, is pictured, right, with Mike Hurley. Next year's tournament will be held on Saturday, September 30, the day of the next annual Society dinner.

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY TO TEWKESBURY ABBEY To find an illustration for their 2016 Christmas card, the Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey decided to hold a competition for local schools. Pupils were given several weeks over last Christmas and New Year to design images of the Abbey to feature on the front of this year’s cards. Way back in February a group of judges, chaired by the Abbey’s former architect, Neil Birdsall, selected a winning design from both the primary and secondary school categories. The primary winner was Ellie Upton of Alderman Knight School, who produced a colourful and eye-catching image of the Abbey in the snow. Matthew Bashford who is in Year 11 at Tewkesbury School won

the secondary section with a striking design of the east end of the Abbey in winter, which he based on an image created by local photographer Mark Downing. The designs have now been turned into attractive Christmas cards thanks to local firm, Tewkesbury Printing. Cards come in packs of five and are already on sale in the Abbey or via the Friends’ e-mail address friends@tewkesburyabbey.org.uk. The

cost is £3.00 per pack. Graham Finch, Chairman of the Friends, said, “We are delighted that this opportunity to forge links with local schools has proved such a success and are enormously grateful to Matthew and Ellie for the beautiful designs they created. We would also like to thank all the other pupils and their teachers who put such tremendous energy and enthusiasm into the competition.”

Later this month, Tewkesbury Abbey will hold an exhibition of all the entries submitted in the competition. It will open on 16 November with a reception and awards ceremony for all the winners, runners-up and those whose designs were highly commended. TEWKESBURY VISUALLY IMPAIRED GROUP GO BACK TO SCHOOL! The Tewkesbury VIPs recently enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment at Tewkesbury School courtesy of the students. Since the group was established in 2013, children from the school have been involved in assisting at their meetings by spending time with the elderly members and serving them drinks and wonderful homemade cakes. On 6 October the group were invited to visit Tewkesbury School for the afternoon. They were made welcome by the students who treated to them to musical performances and poetry

readings along with tea and cake and time spent talking with the members. Chris Chapman, Volunteer Organiser of the TVIPs said, “The group meets monthly and is supported by local volunteers who collect members from their homes to attend the meetings. People who start to lose their sight frequently lose confidence and do not go out and mix socially and can become isolated. In addi-

tion to sight impairment some, due to age, have mobility difficulties and cannot leave home without support of a volunteer. The involvement of the students from Tewkesbury School with the elderly members has had quite an impact. To be in the presence of young people for even a short time means an awful lot. The relationship with Tewkesbury School has gone from strength to strength and we thank them for giv-

ing our members a really enjoyable afternoon at the school”. Juliet Sirrell who manages the school’s community events said, “Tewkesbury School aims to assist the community wherever possible. We are pleased to support the TVIPs and other events help to give our students opportunities that they might not have otherwise. A NOVEMBER MAKEOVER with Emma Hasa of Ell Hair Salon This month Katrina and Yvonne Shepherd, two lovely ladies from Northway were treated to a makeover by Emma. Starting with Katrina, Emma applied i prime to even out her skin, then added i tint medium moisturiser and then i finish to seal the make up, i glow sirroco was applied to Katrina’s cheeks and for her lips Emma chose i slick spice berry. For Katrina’s eyes Emma applied i flick black liner to give definition and her lashes were enhanced with i flutter black. LIFESAVING TRAINING AT THE ANCHOR INN Local lady, Victoria Phelps, has been on a mission raising funds to provide vital defibrillators at Tewkesbury Rugby Club and the town centre Anchor Inn. The first aid kits that came with the defibs have been donated to the local Boys Brigade where they will be used to train their cadets. Vicky embarked on her challenge after loosing her much loved brother Colin to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Recent training sessions on how to use the equipment were held at the Anchor inn and represented the culmination of Vicky’s work.

CONNECTIONS, SPANNING 114 YEARS This month we feature Tewkesbury businesses from a town guide published in 1902 that still have similar links with the past. The first business featured, is at 112 High Street and even in 1902 had been trading for nearly a century. Roberts Brothers were a Bakers and Confectioners and today Carousel Confectioners sell delightful ranges of sweets, chocolates with a coffee and tea parlour at the rear. The frontage looks similar, but visual evidence suggests that it has been rebuilt at some point.

The second connection is with the property at 25 High Street. Formerly the Central Supply Store owned by Oswald B Moore, he advertised that they were an

Italian Warehouse. Today the property trades as the popular Italian Restaurant, Zitto e Mangia and substantially the building remains much the same.

Finally we have Tewkesbury’s oldest pub reputed to be the oldest hostelry in Gloucestershire. Still trading today, the building is relatively unchanged still serving good beer and food, although the adjacent half timbered building has not faired so well now being reduced to a single story. Oddly enough buildings made in olden times were constructed with materials that were on hand at the time.

Many of Tewkesbury’s half timbered buildings were made from Oak beams from old sailing ships and they gave rise to the asymmetrical, higgledy piggledy look that attracts visitors to the town to enjoy the ambience. If only developers had had the foresight over the last half century to acknowledge this, then our towns around the country could have benefitted from keeping our architectural gems.

Newtown WI report from Chris Aldridge Our talk and presentation explained that since its beginnings in 1984 The Vale Wildlife Centre has grown from one Tawny Owl in a bird cage in Caroline Gould’s back garden to treating over 4,000 animals and birds each year in a £230,000 new Hospital and Rehabilitation centre in Beckford. Most injuries are due to human activities and patients usually arrive in cardboard boxes! The centre aims to treat the animals and return them to their original environment keeping human contact to a minimum. They rely on donations of food and volunteer helpers and now run Charity Shops in Evesham and Cheltenham. THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME, NOVEMBER 1916 One of the continuing limited operations took place on 5 November 1916, when the 2nd Worcesters carried out an attack on a sloping German position known as Boritzka Trench – in an effort once again to gain higher, drier ground before the final days of the campaign. The attack, however, took place during a thunderstorm, accompanied by lightning. The trench was, in fact, captured – but there were 200 casualties including Pte. Fred Dee [V] of the Berkeley Arms, who died of his wounds the next day. The Register merely reported “another Tewkesburian killed”. in the campaign was not called off and Beaumont Hamel was, at long last, captured. Nevertheless trenches had to be consolidated and the Germans were still using artillery. Pte. L. Gurney [V], was “killed instantly by a shell whilst out with a party at night”. His body was – again – never recovered nor identified.

UPVC CLEANING

I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE I want you to get a piece of white paper, writes David C. Slater. Place it in front of you. Somewhere on that piece of paper I want you to draw a black dot with a pencil or felt tip pen. Leave it on the table and then go back to it in about 15 minutes. Take a second piece of paper and the pencil. Leave the other one with the dot in front of you where you can see it clearly. Look at the paper with the dot on carefully. Now I want you to write down what you see there. What have you written? Some will say how big the dot is. Someone will say, often with great precision, where the dot is positioned on the paper. Others may be thinking I want you to be more creative and will compare the spot to a fly or a spider walking across the page or the entrance to a dark tunnel. Now, BE HONEST, how many of you have written about the white part of the paper ? The chances are that no one has done that at all. This exercise was carried out in schools and universities and not one of the pupils mentioned the

white! You focused on the black spot and that is just what we tend to do in life. We spend our time looking at the black spots , not noticing the bright spots that are all around them. It is the black times, the black moods that seem to demand our attention often to an unnecessary degree Life is a gift that we have and there are so many reasons and excuses to celebrate. Sometimes we have to allow ourselves to open our eyes and minds just that little but more to be able to see and appreciate them. We still, however, tend to concentrate our attention on the health problems, the money worries, the work issues, the inclement weather. We worry about our complicated relationships and family problems, the disappointments and let downs with friends.

In truth the dark spots are usually very small compared to everything that we have in our lives but they are still the ones that tend to fill and pollute our minds. Take your eyes away from the dark spots that are in front of you ; the dark spots in your life. Instead enjoy each one of the good moments in your life that are given you. Enjoy each one of your blessings. Every day when you wake it is like beginning a new chapter in the book of life and it is there for us to make of it what we will. Be happy and allow yourself to live as much of your life as possible positively. I know things cant be brilliant always but it is important to try and maintain a sense of perspective.

See the joy and allow your eyes to see the light, the good things that surround you. We live in a peaceful country. There is food to eat, water to drink. When we go to bed at night we are not listening out for yet more fighter planes or barrel bombs such as those that terrify, maim and kill the people of Syria. These are the black spots in life. Take a look at the first piece of paper that I mentioned. What can you see? Can you see the white paper, now? Can you see the Light? Let the Light be a bigger part of your life than the Dark. See all of what is there and not just the tough bits. I am sure that your life will itself feel lighter as a result! Protecting yourself against burglary If you are already thinking this is a familiar message then you are quite correct, unfortunately we get a spate of burglaries every year when the nights get darker, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright. It is not difficult to understand why as houses are left in darkness and it is much easier for burglars to make off without being seen. However it only takes a few minutes to make your home less vulnerable to an opportunist thief. Have a look at the following list of measures some of them won’t cost you any money and other can be implemented relatively cheaply. Leave lights on when you are out. There are many ways you can do this ranging from simply leaving a light (or lights on) when you leave your home, to using some sort of automatic switching device to operate selected lights while you are out, or even away on holiday. Simple timer units which plug in to a standard 13amp socket can

be used to turn lamps on or off as required and most allow lights to be switched on or off several times during a 24 hour period. Using two or three

such timers set to different on/off patterns and located in different rooms will confuse a thief and can give a realistic impression that the house is occupied. Leave a radio on when you go out… it won't use much power, but again it helps to give the impression of the house being occupied. Leaving a car parked on your driveway is another sign that someone is home. While you're away on holiday, you could even let a friendly neighbour park on your drive. It may help them and will make your home look occupied Is the outside of your property well lit? Install security lights – preferably the type that are activated by someone entering the PIR detector zone which triggers the light, which remains on while they remain in the detector zone, or for a pre-set period of time (typically a couple of minutes). The sudden illumination is more likely to startle an intruder and cause them to flee, as well as alerting you to the fact that someone or something has entered the detector zone. It is also more likely to trigger the interest of a neighbour or passer-by than a light that is on all the time. Do you have an alarm installed? A professionally installed and monitored home alarm is something that every home should invest in. It is a great first line deterrent to intruders and should anyone break to your home and trigger the alarm – it is likely to frighten them into making a speedy exit before they get caught, minimising the time they have to steal of

damage your property. An alarm may get you a discount with your home insurer, but you will need to keep it maintained and in good working order, which ideally means taking out an annual maintenance contract for it REMEMBER TO SET IT EACH TIME YOU LEAVE YOUR HOME (even if you're only popping out for a few minutes to collect your child from school or to grab a pint of milk from your local shop). Don't leave anything outside which could help a burglar Lock up your ladders with chain and padlock

or locking bracket as shown here. Just one last reminder it’s not just your home thieves are targeting we have recently had a spate of thefts of and from motor vehicle with Northway being the worst hit area. I will ask three things: lock your vehicle, don’t leave valuable on display and don’t leave the keys in the hall where they are easily stolen you probably will not see your car again. DIP YOUR HEADLIGHTS! What’s all this about?’, writes Anthony Stockman. Well, with the nights closing in as winter approaches, walking or cycling on un-lit paths, minor roads and lanes becomes a somewhat of a nightmare when a car approaches with headlights on ‘high beam’ and DOESN’T DIP! As a cyclist and walker, I come across this a lot – and so apparently, do many other people. Last winter, I was cycling along Fiddington Lane, with decent lighting, but it was no match for the lights on a large 4 x 4, lit up like a Christmas tree that came barrelling towards me. The lights weren’t dipped; I waved frantically, (not that it had any effect); I couldn’t see a thing and ended up ‘pitch-poling’ into the ditch to my left. The driver slowed to walking pace, observing my crumpled state – and then just cleared off! Great! Walking at night is just as hazardous. A friend of mine, dazzled by a similar inconsiderate motorist,

Dazzling! walked into a road sign, cutting his head quite badly; (almost happened to me on several occasions). I carry a bright little torch now – and wave it up and down a couple of times if they don’t dip. That works! Maybe more walkers will do the same, but that doesn’t help you if you’re caught out at night without one and have to walk any distance in the dark. But the point is, many drivers just don’t think it’s necessary to dip headlights when the see an oncoming pedestrian

or push-bike; WELL IT IS! I suggest those of you who are reading this and think it’s irrelevant, go out at night and try it for yourselves; then you might get the picture! Anthony Stockman

Jung for Kittens, a new publication by a local author, is a magical fairy story for grown-ups. It tells the tale of a young man who is forced by fate to embark on a journey to discover his true Self. He is guided on his quest by the works of Carl Gustav Jung, the advice of an eccentric voodoo priestess turned esoteric psychologist, and a talisman in the shape of a small orphaned kitten. Set in London in 2010, it has humour, romance, darkness and a psychological take on the eternal battle between good and evil. Plus, of course, a magic kitten. The response from early readers has been enthusiastic. Descriptions have included articulate, funny, elegant, poignant, original, thought provoking, witty, delightful, magical, realistic, entertaining, compelling and a delight and a treasure. People have said that it is a book that should be read more than once - not because it is difficult but because it is such fun but also has deep insights. It is certainly unusual and difficult to categorise. It is a comic novel written in a slightly old-fashioned style but it also a romance with a touch of magical reality, in that the fantastic intrudes on the real world. Glyn K Green settled in Twyning fifteen years ago. She had previously lived in Bristol, where she went to university, Durham, Devon, Texas, Germany, London and a few other places besides. She worked for many years with animals but none were quite as remarkable as the kitten in the book. Apart from writing her other main enthusiasm is gardening.
