Festive Lights will soon be shining along Tewkesbury’s three main streets after the big switch on at Sunday 25th November’s Christmas Market. Another exciting day is being planned for the special event, and this year there will be added attractions - including two of Santa’s reindeer and a falconry display. The market stalls are fully booked already, and there will be a wide variety of splendid Christmas gift ideas, and opportunities to win prizes. The principal raffle is being organised by Andrews Estate Agent, who have provided the main prize - and tickets are available from their High Street offices. This year’s Tewkesbury Firework display looks set to be bigger and better than ever. The free event, held at The Vineyards on Saturday 3rd November, has as usual been organised by the Rotary Club - who have increased the budget for fireworks by 20% this year. There will be a funfair from 4pm, with the bonfire being lit by the Mayor at 6.30pm. Fireworks begin at 7pm. There will be burgers and refreshments and a collection for local charities.

by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi Paperback, £8.99 This book has only just been published in the UK. An African edition has existed for a few years, selling well. This generated British publication. It is a worthwhile read. The story starts out with the death of Kamu Kintu in 2004, and this links the rest of the book, initially leading back to 1750 and the family of his ancestor, a tribal leader called Kintu and the events that happened during a long hazardous trip to pay homage to the new King in Buganda. Kintu's life is good until that fateful journey during which one of his sons accidentally dies, and then the family is cursed. The rest of the novel is primarily based in the early months of 2004, following Kamu's death, and leading up to the Easter holiday of that year. The book provides a clear biographic record of the family members in each chapter, twins are everywhere! This is a useful and essential help to follow the branches of Kintu's descendants. There is also a family tree showing all the cousins, though I felt this somewhat ignores the timeline over two and half centuries. Each of the chapters introduces the reader to offshoots within Kintu's family, such as the religious husband and wife, and the educated Anglophile, Miisi, Kamu's father. The concluding section sees the reunion of all these families in an attempt to break the curse. The events then unfold

This has been heralded as the great Ugandan novel, and the opening part in 1750 certainly sets the tribal scene very well. When we move into 2004, the story does cover reference to the old colonial days, and also to the harsh times of Idi Amin. The poverty of a developing nation is clearly evident, and the traditions of the Kintu dynasty experienced through the generations and how the curse has moulded their lives reads well. The final section of the book produces an outcome for the family and Kintu's surviving relatives, exactly what, the reader must discover! This is a good read for the dark evening nights, do keep a bookmark in the "Cast of Characters", you will need this, but please do not be put off by that. TENTH GOLD MEDAL FOR BLOOM VOLUNTEERS Tewkesbury volunteers are celebrating their tenth gold medal in the 2018 Heart of England in Bloom competition, writes Shelby Powell. Volunteers took the two judges on a two and half hour tour starting at Marina Court with “outstanding horticultural displays that set the standard for the day.” “This is a very well organised and committed in bloom group with very strong volunteer involvement and commitment throughout the town,” said RHS judge Roger Bache. Before reaching the town centre, the judges enjoyed a visit to the village green/Black Bear corner cared for by members of Tewkesbury North Residents association as well as the Little Park by the Lock which is tended by residents of Kings John Court. After an inspection of the Abbey's grounds there was a stop off at Victoria Gardens described by Roger Bache as "a shining example of community gardening at its best". The grand finale was a helicopter ride sponsored by the Rotary Club

The award was collected by town mayor, Chris Danter (left) who is pictured with judge Les Goodman, Chair Karen Brennan and Brian Reeve of Handyman Centre to view the Nature Reserve which Roger says is “an excellent wildlife project which is a real gem for the town.” Volunteers are waiting for the National Finals results which are due to be announced shortly. Tewkesbury is the only Gloucestershire entry to reach the neces-

sary standard to take part in the Britain in Bloom competition with 78 UK wide entries. There have also been horticultural successes for Tewkesbury businesses with Heart of England in Bloom awards been given to the Abbey Tea Rooms, the Royal Hop Pole, British Legion Club, and the Bell Hotel.

MORE FOLK MUSIC FOR THE OLD BAPTIST CHAPEL One of the UK’s most original singer-songwriters is set to play a concert at Tewkesbury’s Old Baptist Chapel this month. With a voice likened to ‘malt whiskey and melted chocolate’ and her exquisite guitar playing, Sarah McQuaid’s return to Tewkesbury is much anticipated. She will be playing at the Old Baptist Chapel on Friday 30th November (8pm start, doors 7.30pm). Born in Madrid (to a Spanish father and an American mother), raised in Chicago and now residing in Cornwall, Sarah was taught piano and guitar by her folksinging mother, and from the age of

twelve she was embarking on tours of the US and Canada with the Chicago Children’s Choir. She launched her solo career live on Irish TV in 2007, and ten years and four albums later, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland. Sarah comes to Tewkesbury following a seven week tour of the USA, promoting her latest album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous, which was produced by the leg-

John Talbot’s photos of Then and Now: Watledge House is being demolished in 1979, providing enough land for a housing development and eventual doctors’ surgery -which is currently being converted in to more housing.

Having waited for so many years to see a photo of the former Watledge House, I was thrilled when THS member Anne Ludlow put me in contact with this local photographer, writes John Dixon. Architecturally the former villa residence might be disappointing the Osborne family claimed that they transformed an aunt’s home by 1871 into a “handsome villa residence”. The Osborne family were generations of successful grocers and owned the increasingly sub-divided land from about 1825 on which was an earlier villa owned by a spinster aunt.

TWO FORGOTTEN RAILWAYS With the support of Tewkesbury Historical Society, John Dixon has published his labour of love ‘Tewkesbury’s Two Forgotten Railways.’ It covers the history of the railway age from 1840 to 1961, looking at its impact on the town. It also tries to allocate responsibility for its closure - (can we really blame Dr. Beeching?) and features both the workers and the locomotives. The foreword was provided by Ian Boskett and Sam Eedle designed the cover. A book signing will take place at Alison’s Bookshop from 10-12 on Saturday, 17 November and there will be a guided walk along the Railway’s Remains on Sunday 18th from 11-1pm starting at Morrisons’ with charging £2 in support of Parkinsons UK. The author hopes readers of the new publication will enjoy being reminded of local railways.

From 1881 William Osborne resided there with his extended family which included Hopkins the Draper. He was a member of the Christadelphian denomination – vegetarian and ‘tee-total’. After his death George Evans Hayward, the ironmonger moved into the house in 1911 – with a Hopkins bride! The Osborne children had wisely married into other families of leading Tewkesbury drapers – the Hortons, the Papps and the Williams – one of whom, in turn, married another Hayward! That family left after World War II and were replaced by Cllr. Martin Cadbury and then Dr. Shephard built his surgery before demolishing the house. It was also replaced by smaller homes on the frontages either side of the modern close; an adjacent one later became part of the practice. The not-so-handsome villa did, nevertheless, provide a home for successive generations of socially active citizens and, now, room for much needed homes.

PROJECT SET FOR ABBEY’S 900TH As Tewkesbury Abbey moves towards its 900th anniversary in 2021, its history and heritage will be the focus of a new research project in collaboration with the University of Exeter. Thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey and match funding from the University, a dedicated doctoral researcher, Eleanor March, has been appointed to lead the project and to prepare a Conservation Management Plan which to help guide the continuing care for this much-loved church. Eleanor is a qualified historical archaeologist, a graduate of Exeter and York Universities, and comes to this project direct from working in a heritage conservation role at Bodiam Castle, Sussex. Her particular interest is in medieval sites and she is especially pleased to take up this role; “This is the ideal opportunity to extend my research into the character of English monastic architecture and to inform my future work in heritage.” The project will run for three years. MUSEUM TO RESTORE FAIRGROUND Tewkesbury Museum is proud to announce that it has begun the refurbishment of one of largest and most popular exhibits, the Salt Model Fairground. Built in 1956 by a Mr A E Salt as a travelling display, it originally consisted of some 400 pieces ranging from large working rides - gallopers, big wheel, chair planes - lorries and stalls to a range of individual figures. All the rides folded to fit model trucks, just as they do in Tewkesbury’s Mop fair.

It will soon be Pantomime time in Twyning Twyning Players are looking forward to putting on this classic panto, adapted and written by one of their own, Richard Haines. It was first performed in 1988 and again in 2009, so continuing the tradition with updated characters and appealing to a whole new audience, come and see the good fairy win her battle with evil and see Cinders get even with the dreaded ugly sisters to win the hand of the prince and live happily ever after. Tickets on sale now from the Village Inn at Twyning and Twyning stores. Performances on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th November at 7.30pm along with Saturday 1st December at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

In 1968 it was purchased by local Councillor Husband and gifted to Tewkesbury town. It was intended to form part of the tourist attraction in the Town Hall, along with a model railway and the model village described in Tewkesbury Direct last month. Unfortunately, it seems to have worked for only about 4 months. The volunteer maintaining the fair left, and all maintenance stopped. Despite efforts by model enthusiasts who rescued parts of the display, the fairground was left to decay until in 1981 the remaining parts were given to the Museum. There it was cleaned and given a lot of tender loving care, but was a static exhibit, the motors were beyond repair, with neither lights nor sound. Despite this, it is still one of the largest model fairground displays, and a firm favourite with visitors. Now the fair will be brought back to life. Five surviving rides

will be expertly restored, the structures repaired where needed, with new motors, LED lighting, and sound, all controlled by bespoke electronics. The rides will turn again, and the stalls and figures will be cleaned and refurbished. To carry out the refurbishment, the museum has brought together a small project team of museum volunteers and repairers from Tewkesbury Repair Café. Although this team will freely give its time, this still leaves a bill estimated at £7000 to complete the job including electrical, lighting and heating installation. Part of this sum has been raised by donations from the Town Mayors’ charity and Bookworm, together with a gift from the late David and Marion Willavoys, and £200 raised by Kerry and staff at M&Co. But we still need more money to complete the work. If you would like to contribute, donations can be made at the museum, which will also

be launching a new crowd funding initiative. Museum Chair Steve Goodchild said “We see the fairground as part of a real revival for a museum based in, and drawing strength from, the community. We have very enthusiastic volun-

teers, we are extending our opening times, we are improving access to our collection, and we have forged alliances with other local groups, including the Repair Café, to work together. I am very optimistic about the future.”

Kemerton WI teamed up with M&Co Tewkesbury on Friday 14th September to put on a Fashion Show in order to raise awareness and funds for The James Hopkins Trust. The sell out event which took place in front of 200 people in Bredon Village Hall included a parade of up to date fashions from M&Co which were modelled by members of Kemerton WI, their families and friends aged from 4 to 81, including men, teenagers and children. The night also included a fashion quiz and raffle with prizes generously donated by local businesses, friends and stallholders who supported the event. THE ROSES REMEMBERS With the centenary of the armistice just around the corner, The Roses’ resident knitting group, K2Togs, have taken inspiration from the many poppy displays that have already been created across the country and created their own yarn tribute to honour the fallen of Tewkesbury district.

The October meeting was extremely thought provoking. We were visited by Richard, Jan and Sylvia from Tewkesbury Refugee Aid, accompanied by Ramia, originally from Syria. Richard told us about their first visit to the refugee camp in Dunkirk in 2015 when they delivered clothes, food etc. all donated by people from Tewkesbury. Many of the people they helped were professional people - engineers, doctors, dentists, who had paid smugglers around £7,000.00 to get them to England. He told us of the harrowing journey a lot of these people had taken and the terrible conditions they then found themselves in. The numbers of refugees was alarming, growing from around 1,400 in 2016 to 10,000 in January 2017. Richard has also visited Cairo in where he helped in centres helping deaf children and adults to learn new skills to enable them to earn money. Jan also told us about the collections made of dignity bags for women in both refugee camps and the prisons in Egypt and many of our members expressed a wish, as a group, to become involved in collecting essentials for these bags. Our next meeting will be on Monday 5th November when we will be holding our A.G.M. December's meeting will be our Christmas Party. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Caroline Lawrence, from The Roses, said: “When the knitters approached me this year to ask if they could make a display (as they do every year, usually for our pantomime), I mentioned that it might be nice to have a few poppies. I couldn’t have imagined just how many they would make, so realised we had a great opportunity to show them off in the most dramatic way we could!” The group has formed the hundreds of handknitted poppies into a breathtaking display, with many extra volunteers giving their time to stitch them all together. The display will be formally unveiled in the Theatre on Friday 5 October at 11am. The Roses’ programme also gives a nod to the armistice this autumn with Stephen Macdonald’s Fringe First winning play Not About Heroes appearing at the venue on Tuesday 16 October. The two-man play tells the story of the unique friendship between celebrated World War One poets

Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, who met at Craiglockhart Hospital in 1917, and bonded over a mutual hatred of war and love of poetry.

SEA CADETS WIN QUEENS AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE Following an announcement in the Queen's Birthday Honors List, Tewkesbury Sea Cadets has been formally presented with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service by Dame Janet Trotter DBE, CVO at a special presentation evening. The Queens Award for Voluntary Service is the highest national award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation and is recognised as the MBE for volunteer groups. Tewkesbury Sea Cadets, having recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary, is a thriving unit with an excellent record, demonstrated in their 3 Captains Commendations in as many years. They also participate in an extraordinary amount of community events and are the most pro-active cadet organisation in Tewkesbury, representing the town and borough at a plethora of tri-service events and ceremonies. Their local support extends to hosting charity boating days for other charities such as the ‘Chernobyl Children’ and German exchange students, as

well as their headquarters being frequently used by other local community organisations. Fundraising is a big part of unit life at Tewkesbury Sea Cadets, but they do not just fundraise for themselves. They annually take part in Poppy selling with the Royal British Legion and hold a Charity Carol Service where monetary, food and clothing collections are made and then donated to the town’s food bank charity. Tewkesbury Sea Cadets are now improv-

ing its facilities for current and future cadets, having just finished fundraising nearly £60K to renovate their outside space, including a new purpose built mechanical engineering workshop

The Parliamentary Review highlights best practice from organisations across the UK, whether it’s local businesses, SMEs or large multinationals. Cheltenham-based Clearway, which celebrates its thirty fifth anniversary this year, is featured in the publication’s manufacturing and servicing sector. Managing Director Jeremy Phillips, who lives in Bredon, was interviewed about the history of the company, and its expansion into the high-end domestic door and window market. Established in 1983, Clearway initially focussed on manufacturing and installing their products in the commercial sector. In 2013 the domestic sector represented just five percent of the company’s turnover - five years later it stands at 40% and sales continue to increase in both market areas. Now employing a staff of thirty at its two units in Cheltenham,

Jeremy Phillips Clearway has embraced continuous training and development, using a combination of training providers and in-house mentoring to improve abilities and skills of the younger workforce. “Our factory environment has proved to be the ideal springboard for staff who want to develop extra skills, said Jeremy. “In the past few years we have seen three staff move from the shop floor to take up key roles elsewhere in the company. “Of course, that means that we have constantly to nurture and train new employees to

fill the gap left behind. “Again we have had considerable success in this area. “At Clearway we have concentrated on the basics of quality and service. The company has grown considerably over the past five years from a staff of 19 to over 30. SEVERN UNIT MVS AT EMERGENCY SERVICES SHOW The Emergency Services Show returned to the NEC in Birmingham from 19th to 20th September and this was the 10th year the Maritime Volunteer Service has had a stand there. The event attracts 6,500 visitors and 400 exhibitors over the two days and provides a unique opportunity to network and exchange ideas across the resilience, emergency planning and emergency services community. Orecchiette originates in the sunny southern province of Puglia, Italy, where the weather is warm and the crops plentiful. Welcome Home Private Waylen On 10th October 2018, citizens of Tewkesbury formally welcomed home Pte H. J. Waylen. He had died of TB in May 1917, contracted in the forgotten campaign in Greece. He has since rested in an unmarked grave for 101 years. John Dixon, of Tewkesbury Historical Society, said: “The Commonwealth War Graves Commission agreed to our request to provide him with a belated headstone and, here, it is being formally blessed by Rev. Charles Whitney in the presence of John Sidebotham from Australia – the only living relative. “We were honoured by the presence of the Mayors of Tewkesbury, the Rifles Regiment, pupils of Queen Margaret’s School and local people. “We are very grateful to Pete Godwin for organising the parade, so well supported by fellow members of the Royal British Legion. “It was such a moving occasion in so peaceful a setting.”

䡵 Back to Broadway: steam trains have returned after 58 years! The new extension opened at Easter and since then passenger numbers have increased by almost 50%. What has perhaps surprised everyone most has been the number who join the train at Cheltenham Racecourse to ride the 14 miles to Broadway in order to spend a couple of hours shopping or visiting local bars. Broadway shopkeepers are saying the railway has brought them an increase in trade which of course can only be good for the village. The railway is now one of the top tourist attractions in the Cotswolds and is on most visitors lists of “things to do”. Hotels,

caravan sites and cottages are all reporting increases in interest. As just one example, visitor numbers in August topped 650 a day compared with 450 in 2017. With all the excitement of this year, the railway is planning a few years of quiet consolidation with a major emphasis on improving the infrastructure of the line. During this year a large amount of money has been spent on repairing a bridge at Broadway which has been regularly struck by high lorries. The installation of collision beams earlier last month should now mean there will be no need to close that road in the future. But there is still more to be done with regular maintenance of the bridges and repairs to inevitable landslips. However, the year isn’t over yet. Just round the corner is the start of the Santa Specials. Over 10,000 people will be visiting the railway in December all eager to meet the bewhiskered gent and go away with fabulous presents. Tickets are already going fast with some trains full up, so it’s time to book now or be disappointed. This year, the decorations are even better with a model railway running in between Christmas trees. Wattsy’s Return Walk At 3.55am Friday 5th October Lee Watts and Becka Woodward set off from Gloucester Rugby's Kingsholm Stadium to walk to Worcester Warriors Sixways Ground to raise money for Cancer Research, Lee chose this day for the walk as it would have been his good friend Mike Lee's 43rd birthday, but sadly Mike passed away from cancer earlier this year, and also in memory of Joe Goodwin and Sacha Knight who both sadly died from cancer as well. Abi was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) on 15th September 2015. Although treatable, CML is not curable. The family were supported very early on through a Social Worker who assisted the family, from setting up support groups to indi-

vidual support for a wide range of issues such as hospital parking fees, accommodation close to the hospital and benefit assessments. CLIC Sargent fund two nurses and a play specialist in Gloucestershire. This means that child cancer patients can

have some treatments at home or school and can help children through tough times, such as the many medical procedures, blood test and self medication. Abi’s Dad, Ryan, still uses CLIC Sargent events

Cheque presentation to a very good cause The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury recently enjoyed a talk from the local VentrisField family about the help provided to them by charity Dogs for Good. Mum Tracy was accompanied by husband David and their 8 years old son Connor, along with their Assistance Dog Tammy. Connor has cerebral palsy, severely limiting his mobility and also is mildly autistic. Tracy spoke movingly of the behavioural challenges of Connor which were dramatically eased when Dogs for Good were able to provide them with highly trained Tammy, a Golden Retriever. Connor’s tantrums and bouts of biting had disappeared since Tammy’s arrival. Tracy said “Tammy has been such a calming influence on Connor. The Connor you see today is not the Connor we used to have. Tammy has definitely changed our lives.” Connor added “I love you, Tammy”. President Anne Bartholomew of The Rotary Club was delighted to present Tracy with a cheque for £500 to help the work of Dogs for Good, saying “We were all so inspired by the family’s story and wanted to do our bit to help the Charity.”

Probus Club learns more about Rudyard Kipling Nearly everyone will have heard of the great writer Rudyard Kipling. Millions will have read his books and be familiar with his poems. But when Mike Bottomley came to speak to Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club about the life of Kipling and his impact on countless aspects of British life, we were surprised at how little we had previously known about the great man.

Kipling was born in Bombay and was sent to England for his education which started at a residence where he was treated so badly that he called it “The House of Desolation” and was pleased to later attend the United Services College in Devon where he thrived. He returned to India where because of his journalistic skills, he became the editor of a local newspaper at the age of 16 which was the start of his successful writing career. Because of his prolific writing and the huge success of his books, he became a very wealthy man, someone we would call a celebrity today; but despite his wealth and success two tragic events affected him deeply. In 1899 both he and his daughter Josephine contracted a fever and whilst Kipling survived, his daughter died. When war broke out in 1914, Kipling encouraged his son John to enlist but because of John’s short-sightedness

he was turned down. So Kipling used his extensive connections and John obtained a commission in the Irish Guards and went to war in France. John was reported missing and his body was never found, leaving Kipling effectively a broken man. There are so many words and phrases in use today that were coined by Kipling like “Known to God” on the

gravestone of the Unknown Soldier. Our speaker presented his talk in a very entertaining manner, reading several of Kipling’s poems in a lively and animated, but sometimes poignant manner. He even encouraged some audience participation with the chorus of “boots, boots, boots, boots, moving up and down again” part of one of Kipling’s many poems

supporting the dedication and loyalty of the legendary private soldier. New Carer Community Builder in Tewkesbury Hi, I’m Roger, your local Carer Community Builder…not a title that means a lot I expect, so what’s it all about? The best way to explain is to tell you a story; Joan (not her real name) is a lovely lady in her early fifties who ran a very successful business for many years. Her husband sadly had a stroke that meant she had to spend a lot of time caring for him. After several months the strain of doing that plus holding down a job became too much and she had to leave work. Joan and her husband managed well for some time, but as his condition worsened she had to spend more and more time at home and Joan found herself losing confidence. This reached a level at which she was unable to answer the phone at home if it rang. Her husband didn’t need constant care, so Joan would have been able to get out of the house and do some things she would enjoy – but she just couldn’t do it. I’m happy to say that Joan did eventually get the courage to re-make a life for herself, but if I’d been able to support her at an earlier point I could have helped her make links to the local community without it taking

the energy it eventually demanded of her.

The first outing (at the end of August) was blessed with good weather and started at Toddington, where members enjoyed an optional cooked breakfast at the Flag and Whistle Café. Following the mandatory photo-shoot, the party then boarded a train to travel over the picturesque and recently opened section of line to Broadway. This train was steam-hauled by 35006, a beautifully presented Merchant Navy Class locomotive. Many members of the group then walked the short distance from the station into Broadway, making the most of the sunshine to enjoy a stroll around the village and a cup of coffee. For the return trip, some alighted at Toddington but others chose to complete the round trip via Cheltenham Racecourse. A great way to enjoy the Cotswold countryside. The second outing, to the Helicopter Museum, took place during the early part of September.

Members and guests were collected by minibus from the Hunters Inn, Buckbury, and arrived at the conveniently situated Museum just before 11pm. After light refreshment, the party was divided into two groups and given a very informative guided tour. The photo shows

The influx meant that relationships between G.Is and British women inevitably developed. Abi Murphy is currently a research student at the University of Gloucestershire, exploring relationships between British women and G.Is. “Many women faced hostility from their community and families, yet around 70,000 war brides went to the USA.” said Abi. “What then were the experiences of these women and did the hostility and the threat of ostracism from society put off any women? “As Tewkesbury had a large presence of American G.Is, I have been working closely

As this route traces the bank of the River Severn, it should not be attempted when the river is in flood. Check local weather news before setting off. Parking is available (for a small fee) at Odda’s Chapel, which is in the stewardship of English Heritage. This Saxon chapel was commissioned in 1056 by Earl Odda, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity in memory of his brother Aelfric, who died at the spot. For many years the chapel was used as a cottage. Even older, and equally fascinating, is the ancient Deerhurst Church, which was built in AD 800. There was once a priory here too. Restoration work began in 2007, after the infamous floods. You will note several ‘flood gates’ have been installed here to prevent future inundations. For the walk, follow the public footpath signs from Odda’s Chapel down to the River Severn (1). Passing a hollow tree on your right, turn left along the river bank (2) and continue to walk ahead following the Severn Way. On the opposite bank you can see moorings and the popular Yew Tree Inn at Chaceley. Keep along the tow path, eventually passing some ponds to the left,

with the river still on your right. At the end of the last pond (3) follow the path straight ahead until you reach the Coal House Inn. This hostelry is currently only open on Friday and Saturday evenings and from noon on Sundays. Check the pub’s website www.coalhouseinn.co.uk for more details. Turn left on to a lane after the pub (4) and walk ahead until the bend. Go through the gate on the left (5),cross the field back to the river

MONTHLY HISTORY TALKS AT ANCHOR INN John Dixon or Tewkesbury Historical Society is to give a series of monthly talks at the Anchor Inn. John’s first talk will be on Tuesday 13th November, from 12 noon until 2pm. Entitled ‘Anchor Inn and Railway Hotel’ it will examine the impact of the Quay Street railway on a pub. John has been invited to give the talks by Loz, who recently became landlady of the inn. The Anchor is at 42 High Street, Tewkesbury GL20 5BH.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater It was a very busy day in the city, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. That was nothing unusual, really, but for one man it was going to be a very different day. A day which he would remember for the rest of his life. Graeme was a very successful young man. He had done well at school. This was followed by a good degree at university. Now he was director off his own company employing many local men and women. To celebrate his own success he had recently bought a top of the range Bentley. He liked the way people would turn and look at him as he drove along the street. Mmmmm. He really liked to feel that he was really important. It was a very busy day today. The road was crammed with cars and the pavements were heaving with crowds of people shopping and sight-seeing. This didn't stop Graeme foolishly try to show off by ignoring the speed limit. When he had the chance he would go over the speed limit. Yes, he was so powerful - in his own mind, anyway. Suddenly a big stone crashed into the side of his car and smashed into his side door. He slammed on his brakes. Fortunately no cars were near him at that time. He put on his hazard

A VERY DIFFERENT DAY warning lights and, seething with anger, got out of his car. He looked around him and saw a young boy standing at the edge of the road. He was holding a large stone on one hand. Graeme went over and grabbed the boy by the scruff of his neck, pulled him off the pavement and went to the car and pushed him up against it. “Was this you who did this?” he raged. “What do you think you are doing?? That car cost me a lot of money. What were you thinking of?” Tears began to stream down the young boy's face. He began to say how sorry he was and Graeme actually began to believe him. Then he noticed something the boy said “It was the only way that I could make sure that somebody would stop. “I have been shouting and waving for ages but people and cars just went by. “That's why I threw the stone. I waved at you but you didn't see me”. “But why?” asked Graeme. “It's my dad” said the boy. “He just fell of the curb in his wheelchair and he is so heavy that I just can't lift him up. “He was calling to people and I was too but no one stopped by to help. That's why I threw the stone.

“He's hurt and I can't move him!” Graeme was really disturbed by what he heard. He went with the boy to where the father was lying. He took out a clean handkerchief and dabbed at the scrapes and cuts on the man's face and arms. It turned out that things were not as bad as they might have been. The man was not badly hurt, mainly shocked, and the wheelchair was OK if a bit scratched. Graeme lifted the man into his chair, made sure that he was going to be OK, and the boy was happy to push him back home which was a few streets away. “Are you sure you can manage?” he asked the boy. “Yes thank you, sir ! And I am really sorry about the car!” “You take care now,” said Graeme. “ Just concentrate on getting your dad home in one piece!” He looked back at his car. The damage was very noticeable but he never bothered to get it repaired as it reminded him of what had happened and the lesson that he had learned that day. The lesson? Quite simple really. DON'T GO THROUGH LIFE SO FAST THAT SOMEONE HAS TO THROW A STONE AT YOU TO ATTRACT YOUR ATTENTION. That can happen in life though, can't it?

Sometimes we can feel that we are so busy and occupied that we often feel we don't have the time to listen. It is

then that often something comes that shocks us into action. The proverbial stone is thrown at us to attract

Now that the weather is getting colder, Tewkesbury Foodbank is hoping to re-launch its ‘Donate A Coat/Take A Coat’ scheme. Project manager Marion Badham said: “We will once again be putting out a coat rail outside for donated coats and for anyone who needs a warm coat to take one. This project ran very successfully last year and we gave out over 50 coats. “If you would like to donate a coat, please call into our centre. “We really need coats/jackets in good condition and preferably waterproof. “We also need a new coat rail. We are looking for a coat rail with wheels to make it easier for our ‘not so youthful’ volunteers to manoeuvre in and out of our centre!
