Owner Steve Singh Biryanna bought the freehold of the Old George Inn, and relocated from the Post Office’s old position on the opposite side of the High Street. Grandparents back at school Staff and pupils of Mitton Manor Pre-School Club teamed up with grandparents at a special open morning last month. It was a chance for relatives to experience first hand how their grandchildren learnt and played in the classroom. The children had been learning about growth in people as well as plants. Angela Walker, from the school, was very pleased with how the morning went and may run similar events in the future.

Firefighters rescue horse from brook Firefighters saved the life of a horse that had got stuck in a brook in Tewkesbury last month. Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service received a call about a horse that had got in trouble in a brook off Bredon Road on the edge of the town. The large animal rescue team from Gloucester North Fire Station were able to free the mare uninjured using a specialist horse collar. She had become stuck in the brook, separating her from her foal in the field. Crew Commander and animal rescue specialist, Michael Keel, said: “When we arrived, the mare was upright and calm in the brook. We
sent two firefighters in dry suits into the water, with one holding the horse and the other on standby for support if needed. “Thankfully, we were able to get the specialist horse collar over her head, remove a small fenced area and lead her calmly to safely. I then checked her over and she was absolutely fine. The specialist training we receive is so important for rescues like this and her owner was extremely grateful for the successful rescue.” The swift water rescue team from

The horse is led to safety Tewkesbury also attended the incident and were on standby in case more crew were needed. The large animal rescue team was introduced last year when Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service invested in large animal rescue equipment and instructors to ensure that firefighters have the best skills available to protect themselves when handling large animals. With Gloucestershire being such a rural county, the Service is frequently called out to rescue large animals - the most common being horses, cattle, pigs and sheep who often find themselves trapped in machinery, bogs, rivers, pools, brooks and ditches or victims of road traffic collisions. Cllr Will WindsorClive, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure, said: “This successful horse rescue demonstrates how important our investment has been in specialist equipment and training – both for animal and water rescues. “This investment has made our already excellent Fire Service even more responsive and efficient, as well as ensuring that firefighters are more able to protect themselves in potentially difficult and dangerous situations.” 2 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

There were two categories 'flower power' and 'Battle' judged by Town Mayor, Chris Danter who awarded first prize in each category to Army of Angels and Abbey Antiques respectively. Sarah's in Barton Street and St Richards Hospice Charity shop each received 'highly recommended' certificates. ‘Runners up' awards were given to Pretty Special ladies boutique in Church Street and the British Heart Foundation Shop. Chris Danter commented: "Judging was a difficult task. I'd like to thank the owners of "She wears it well" for carefully choosing merchandise to complement the 'Battle' theme. “And another special mention goes to the curators of the John Moore Museum, who had red and white roses, a frame of a house of that period, hunting birds of prey all interspersed with model soldiers in the museum window."

TOWN LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS The Christmas Lights have been taken out of storage in preparation for the switch on in November. There will be a carnival atmosphere on Sunday 24th November, with a bustling street market and fairground rides. Rifina, Gloucestershire’s Premier Electrical Distributor, with head office and warehouse here in Tewkesbury, has generously offered the time and the services of their electrical technicians. They will inspect all the lamps and fittings of the displays to make sure that they are safe and in working order before being put up. Rifina have also offered to source, order, supply, install and underwrite the £3000 cost of the new replacement bulbs so that the lights can be ready in time. “We are pleased to be able to help in any way we can” said Mr Bartlam. “I think that having Tewkesbury put on a good Christmas light display is imperative for the good reputation of the Town and can only benefit local businesses and especially the local retailers.

It was recently announced that Tewkesbury Historical Society (T.H.S) has received £4,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, ‘Researching & Publishing Biographies of all those killed in World War I from Tewkesbury.’ Led by volunteers from the Society, the project focuses on the publication of a Book containing biographies of all those who lost their lives in the War together with a narrative history which will place their deaths into the context of the War. 154 local men have their names inscribed on the War Memorial but some families missed the opportunity of commemorating the loss of their loved ones so their biographies will be added in the published book. The project will enable the public and students of Tewkesbury School to discover significantly more information about the victims of war beyond a mere entry on a War Memorial. Year 9 students at the school study the First World War as part of the National Curriculum and they will be mounting an exhibition of their work later this year.
The whole aim is to raise awareness in the community and to encourage citizens to bring forward much more information. Later in the academic year, these students will be able to visit the Imperial War Museum for the exhibition dedicated to telling the Story of this War. Commenting on the award, Lucie Davis, Head of Humanities at Tewkesbury School said: “We are excited about our students having the opportunity to connect with the First World War from a local community
perspective. “It will help them appreciate the experiences of some brave young men from Tewkesbury who made the ultimate sacrifice 100 years ago. Head of HLF South West Nerys Watts said: “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond. “The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested more than £15million in projects – large and small - that are marking this global Centenary. “With our new small grants programme, we are enabling even more communities like those involved in this project from Tewkesbury Historical Society to explore the continuing legacy of this conflict and help local young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”

MARATHON QUINTET DO WELL IN BERLIN Five runners from three leading Gloucestershire-based running clubs travelled to the recent Berlin marathon together and all performed well. The iconic race, which passes many of the city’s famous buildings, with a final finishing straight that takes the runners through the Brandenburg Gate. Berlin is rated as one of the six ‘world major’ marathons with 40,000 runners and is on the ‘bucket list’ of all aspiring marathoners to complete at some point in their running career. Just securing a place each year is extremely competitive – so much so that for 2013 all 40,000 places were snapped up within just 3.5 hours of on-line registration being opened nearly 12 months earlier. Having devised a plan back in 2012 to travel together for the 2013 race, the five friends were fortunate to all be granted places. The conditions on the day, and Berlin’s reputation as possibly the fastest marathon course in the world, led to a new marathon world record being set by winner Wilson Kipsang of

The leading Gloucestershire performer was Tewkesbury AC’s Angie Sadler, who was running her 108th marathon and finished in a time of 3 hrs 19 mins 26 seconds for 229th woman finisher and 13th WO50 from nearly 1,250 in her category. Dursley AC duo of first-time-marathoners Mouse Clutterbuck and Kate Browning performed creditably for times of 3-36-48 for Mouse (and 8,462th male overall) and 3-4239 for Kate (1,045th
woman overall). Seasoned marathon runner Den Evans of Gloucester AC was hoping to break her own personal best time and only just failed to do so in recording an excellent 3-44-31 as 1,140th woman overall and also in a top 100 WO50 position with 97th place. Finishing last of the five - and the eldest by some margin - was 66 year-old veteran Phillip Howells of Tewkesbury AC who completed his 154th marathon in 430-33 and was 21,110th male in recording his fastest marathon time for nearly two years.

Robin’s songs of life and love feature in a new anthology Robin Norton has lived at Hartpury in Gloucestershire, since he retired in 2004, though he worked for a short time at the Prestberries Natural Therapy Centre. Since then he has joined the Tewkesbury U3A to do creative writing and has had several poems published on the poetry page, in The Weekend Citizen. Robin was also involved with others as part of a project at an Extra Care Retirement Housing Complex. The aim was to encourage elderly folk to be creative through writing and painting. Now, at seventy five, he has just completed and self published a brief autobiography in verse. Although most of the poems in the book are autobiographical, there are also some written for Robin by friends. Many are easy to read, as they contain a human understanding of life that others may find encouraging, as he also has an honest approach to love. Someone once said of Robin; that he always goes the extra mile in whatever he does. It is because he has worked with other people on all sorts of levels, from teaching at further and community education
and creating workshops of his trades, involving cookery, astrology and Tai Chi. Also in 1986/87 he was involved in the organisation of promoting Mental Health in Cambridgeshire. The writing of this anthology has fulfilled his ambition to record

Leg Waxing for Charity Three brave local men stepped forward to have their legs waxed for a good cause last month. Volunteers Roger, Jason and Roy went through the hair-raising experience at Body 2 Soul in Ashchurch Road after being sponsored to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Emily, from Body 2 Soul, got to work waxing the mens’ legs - providing her expert services free of charge to help the cause. RETURN OF THE RED KITE In the 29 years since Vale Wildlife Hospital began we have dealt with many, many birds of prey, writes Carolie Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. The most common and widespread species in the countryside today is the common buzzard (Buteo buteo). The buzzard now breeds in every county in the UK and according to the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology), there were 67,000 pairs in the UK during the summer months (2009).

Other species of birds of prey that we treat regularly at Vale are the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and the sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), the occasional peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and very rarely a hobby (Falco subbuteo). We also deal with a number of escaped, captive-bred birds each year, the most recent being a stunning white gyr falcon (Falco rusticolus) which was returned to her grateful owners within a couple of days of her disappearance after we were called to a ‘big white eagle’ caught up in a tree. One of my favourite birds of prey, but one that we don’t yet see very often in this area, is the red kite (Milvus milvus), a beautiful bird that was persecuted almost to extinction in England, Scotland and most of Wales in the nineteenth century. Thanks to changing attitudes and intensive conservation efforts, red kites are once again a familiar sight in many parts of the UK. Re-introduced birds can be found in the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, parts of Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Grizedale Forest in Cumbria. Within the hospital we have only ever dealt with three red kites in almost thirty years, one in each of the past three years. However, recently
we have been privileged to see two kites on a regular basis very close to our site and we have been informed that a pair did nest near to Beckford this year, although sadly this didn’t result in any young. I do hope that these magnificent birds have seen an end to their persecution and that their numbers will continue to increase in this locality. CHRISTENING ROBES DISPLAY A SUCCESS When Prince William and Kate Middleton got married, Helen West suggested that a Wedding Dress display should be held as a community and fundraising event. This proved to be successful so when the Royal couple announced they were having a baby, Helen thought it would be fun to hold a Christening Robe and Flower display. Helen asked people in the village if they would be willing to lend their families christening robes and had an excellent response. A range of outfits from very old (210 years), including Edwardian examples with capes, robes made by relatives, soome made from their own mothers’ wedding dresses and some worn by many family members. Christening photos, certificates and items that are used as part of the christening service were placed at the font. “A team organised the event and decided that we would again decorate the church with yellow and white flower arrangements. We wanted to raise money to cover the costs of some of the repairs to St Margaret’s Church. We very much appreciate the support of everyone who came to visit.” said Helen.

NEW SCHOOL OF DANCE OPENS At Easter 2013 Amy Flynn School of Dance opened to classes in Tewkesbury and Walton Cardiff. Amy had been teaching in Walton Cardiff since 2009 for Janet Marshall Dance School and then early this year had been given the opportunity to take over both branches and work under her own name. Amy grew up in nearby Cheltenham where she attended Pate’s Grammar School and where she studied dance at Janet Marshall’s studios. She went on to Arts Educational School in London where she achieved BA Hons in Musical Theatre. She then gained her Diploma in Dance Education in ballet, tap and modern once again at Janet Marshall studios. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, modern, freestyle street jazz, musical theatre for a range of ages and creative dance for preschool. There is the facility to take part in exams, shows, holiday workshops and progress through the grades, with a free trial taster session for new students. Classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at Tewkesbury Comprehensive School and on Tuesdays at Wheatpieces Community Centre, Walton Cardiff. Less than 24 hours later, he was in the Welsh Capital rubbing shoulders with some of the finest players in the world for the European Cup opening press conference. It goes without saying that transport is a fundamental requirement for a professional rugby player. We have had such a marvellous summer that we may now get a really bad winter as a consequence. Good health is not just taking your medication as prescribed , it is also related to your environment. Cold draughtily damp homes can contribute to many health issues. In addition we all know that most accidents happen in the home, slipping or tripping over. Now is the time to be thinking about how you can prepare your home for the winter, here is a short check list - Can you improve the insulation of your home, can you reduce draughts? - Decide which rooms must be kept warm and adjust the thermostats . - Move furniture that might be blocking heat output from radiators. - Save electric by turning off appliances you do not need , and only boil the amount of water you need. Please remember that the recommended ideal temperature is either 70 F or 21C.

At Remembrance, we remember those who are wounded as well as those who lost their lives, writes John Dixon. It is, therefore, as well to remind ourselves of the sterling work done by Mrs. Devereux, O.B.E. and her staff of volunteer nurses in World War I at Mitton Manor Red Cross Hospital. Because Tewkesbury was on a railway line, which connected with Southampton, it very busy in delivering soldiers who had been seriously wounded in the trenches. What a piece of paradise it must have seemed for these soldiers who wore blue uniforms, so they could not be mistaken for “shirkers.” Those, who were able worked, raising vegetables for the canteen. You can see them having some moments of merriment with the donkey, - named mischievously “Mrs Asquith”, after the sharptongued wife of the war’s first Prime Minister. Modern houses, built after much of the land was sold by Baroness Gagern for the Mitton Estate, block the Manor from taking a photograph at the same angle. GETTING TO KNOW YOU - THE REAL YOU Some don't like themselves. Many don't even know themselves. Perhaps it is that life is so complex that it is difficult to describe yourself as you take on so many roles, writes counsellor and therapist David Slater. Many people with whom I talk during the course of my work are asked to stand back and really take a good look at themselves so that they can see more clearly who and what they really are. We peel back the layers until we get to the essential person that may well have been hidden for so long. When this happens there is a feeling of liberation and understanding. There is a sound foundation upon which one can build. Do you know yourself ? The real you? Honestly ?
I find reading the following poem an interesting and enlightening experience.

Set in Martha's Vineyard, the main characters are two American girls whose lives we follow mainly during the summer's spent beside the sea. Nick is wealthy, her cousin Helena less privileged. The story is recounted by each of the girls and moves from 1943 through to 1967. Both marry and have children and these cousins form a crucial part of the book and how a childhood discovery continues to influence their lives into adulthood. America is well documented post war through the 50's and into the swinging 60's. Written by an American journalist, now UK based, this first novel is professionally presented with all loose ended tidied up. It is a good read now the nights are drawing in. Selected by: Ian B. New licence system for Tewkesbury Members of the public looking to hold events in Tewkesbury Borough will find applying for a licence much simpler, thanks to a new online system. The council has introduced a new section on its website, which makes it much easier and quicker to apply and pay for Temporary Event Notices. It should also mean saving for the council. Previously, anyone planning an event with entertainment, alcohol, or hot food and drink for sale needed to apply in writing to the borough council. UNIT ATTENDS EMERGENCY SERVICES SHOW Head of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Nic Price and Publicity Officer Sue Yates went along to help man the Maritime Volunteer Service stand at the Emergency Services Show last month. For the first time it was held at the NEC near Birmingham. Nic Price said "We really had no idea what to expect but we much enjoyed the two days we spent there, and believe that the MVS presence at a show such as this is of great value to the Service as a whole. “Our stand looked most vibrant and interesting and it took the eye of many who were passing by. “A good number of people stopped and spoke to us, and we were particularly pleased to meet MVS members from other units around the country. We were also able to visit other stands and had the opportunity to speak to other voluntary groups and discussions were made on possible joint exercises at Unit level in the near future.” TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 31

The state ballet academy of Belarus will be at the Roses Theatre this month, to perform Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet The Nutcracker. CLEEVE LIGHTS UP The countdown to Christmas has begun - and Bishop’s Cleeve is getting ready to light up for the festive season once more. Father Christmas himself will be taking time out of his busy schedule to drop by the village around 5pm on Saturday 23rd November. The ceremony, which draws hundreds of local folk evey year, will take place in Church Road at the heart of the village. Bishop’s Cleeve’s traders will be open to support the event, with a wealth of independent shops offering a huge array of gift ideas for Christmas.
Father Christmas has been booked to turn the lights on at 5pm. There will be seasonal music, fairground rides and other attractions. The event is being organised once again by Bishop’s Cleeve Chamber of Commerce, who are also behind the village’s annual Summer Street Fair. Proposed retail outlet and garden centre in Ashchurch: planning application submitted An outline planning application for a retail outlet centre and garden centre at Ashchurch has been submitted to Tewkesbury Borough Council. The £30 million development on a 52.8-acre site near junction 9 of the M5 could bring 1,000 jobs to the area.

Flanking both sides of the BP garage on the A46, it would include a garden centre together with a retail outlet centre offering discounted clothing, sport and leisure goods and household items, and up to 2,000 parking spaces. The clientele are expected to come from a 60-minute drive time, principally from the Midlands. It is proposed that the scheme would work in partnership with local businesses and tourism representatives to promote both the retail outlet and Tewkesbury town centre as a joint leisure destination. The aim is to include a tourist information point at the outlet centre, and to provide a subsidised shuttle bus to encourage shoppers to visit the Abbey, riverside, alleyways and
Tewkesbury High Street. The scheme from Robert Hitchins Ltd, based in Boddington, was first revealed in February. And in March more than 250 people attended a public exhibition at Ashchurch Village Hall. Of those who completed a questionnaire, 70% said they were in favour of the scheme, 18% were undecided, and only 12% of those who responded were not in favour. Those with reservations touched on two main topics: traffic on the A46, and potential flooding. The outline planning application is likely to be discussed by councillors in the next few months. Feedback will be used to help develop a Tewkesbury Borough Plan, which will guide locally-specific planning matters in the area until 2031 and will sit underneath an overarching Joint Core Strategy - a document being produced by Cheltenham Borough, Tewkesbury Borough and Gloucester City councils to guide large scale development, including housing and employment. The borough plan will be a key part of creating Tewkesbury Borough’s future and will include the borough’s local planning policies, such as the approach to rural employment sites, affordable housing, conservation areas and local landscape, as well as identifying smaller development sites for housing. WHERE HAVE OUR BRIDGES GONE? Now that the project to remove the old railway bank at the Mythe appears to be complete, readers may be interested that the bricks and rubble from the bridges has gone to Broadway Station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Although the station
is not yet connected by track, work has been taking place over the last few years rebuilding the platforms with a view to rebuild the Edwardian Station just as it was built in 1904. About ten thousand bricks will be useable and any rubble will be used as backfill behind
the platforms. The GWR Plc has just launched a £500,000 share issue with a view to carrying out extansive repairs to five bridges between current Railhead at Laverton. Last month, two leaders from SARA, along with one of their Inshore Rescue Boats, visited 1st Tewkesbury (Newtown) Rainbow Unit to teach them about water safety and how to avoid accidents in and around water. During the visit, the girls learned about the work of SARA and the equipment they use in assisting in a rescue. Kim Hawkins, the Rainbow Unit Leader remarked, "How lucky the Rainbows are to live in a famous town with two waterways. It was a great opportunity for the girls to learn about the hazards of water in and around our town." She also added, "The girls have been working towards the Water Safety Awareness section of the Rainbow Jigsaw program. I just want to say a very big thank you to SARA for visiting the unit and talking to the girls." The girls were allowed to try out the controls, lights and of course the sirens on the boat and all went home with big smiles on their faces. Window Surveyor Vacancy Clearway Doors & Windows Ltd are a Cheltenham-based window and door company seeking a full time surveyor for doors, windows and curtain wall. We are looking for someone with two years minimum experience of window surveying, and a minimum of five years experience in the window industry. The candidate must have a full driving licence and have, or be prepared to undertake, a DBS check (formerly CRB check). They will also need, or be prepared to obtain, the following - via company funded training - PASMA Certificate, Asbestos Awareness Certificate, CSCS Card. The role consists of measuring product openings including bay and bow windows, checking of structural requirements, liaising with the customer on site, agreeing any variations on site, checking of documentation, writing up of survey notes, ordering of products, and liaising with the installations manager and sales manager.
Knowledge of surveying curtain walling would be advantageous but is not essential. The candidate must be able to plan and arrange their own workload in an efficient manner that meets the company's targets. The ideal candidate will be meticulous in their work, must be IT literate and must be able to confidently communicate with all parties whilst multi-tasking. This position is full time 40 hours per week with 20 days holiday plus statutory holidays. Salary negotiable depending upon experience. A company vehicle will be provided and there is a company pension scheme in operation. The role is primarily Monday to Friday, but there will be some out of hour surveys required from time to time. This production follows a journey through four decades displaying the changing face of music and mith. Beginning with the traditional turn of the 20th century Music Hall favourites, the Cast recreate the authentic atmosphere of the Victorian-Edwardian songs and sketches f the era performed in the style of the original artistes. Why not accompany the ‘very proper’ Ladies and Gentlemen as they Stroll Through the Park looking for secret romance? Or better still - share the findings of some mischievous gnomes and commiserate with the boy who lost hid ‘Tiddler’! Whilst World War One initially thought of as an exciting time for young men in search of adventure but very soon realised, as the horror of trench warfare took it’s toll and many of the young men failed to return to their loved ones back home. The Soldiers
sang popular patriotic songs to keep spirits high and to distract the nervous from the sufferings that were going on around them. Ivor Novello (1893-1951) shot to fame overnight with his 1914 song ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’. As you can imagine the Cast have shared the odd history lesson or two whilst singing these wonderful, cherished songs. The Roaring Twenties was a time of great freedom after the restraints of WW1 and the ‘Charleston’ was certainly the dance of the day, and has since featured in many light hearted theatrical musicals, television productions and star-studded box-office films. Composer and Lyricist brothers George and Ira Gershwin’s music was exceptionally popular as our Lady Ensembe will demonstrate in performance. We can think of the music from the 1930’s as when Jazz became civilised, sohpisticated and popu-

As the evenings draw in we often see an increase in certain types of opportunist crime such as burglary and theft from motor vehicles, writes Sgt Henry Wright. I know I have said this before but there are easy steps to reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of crime. Make sure that your home is locked even when you are in and close and lock all windows and doors when you leave your home unattended. Give consideration to fitting outside lighting which can be activated by movement this will deter would be thieves and assist you accessing you home safely and quickly when you return. Make sure these lights are positioned high enough that they cannot easily be reached and disarmed or damaged. Always make your home appear occupied by using time switches on lamps in the evening or to have a radio on during the day. If you are going away for a few days ask a
neighbour to keep an eye on your property tell them to call the police if they see anyone acting suspiciously in the area. With regard to your vehicle make sure it is locked and secure with any valuables placed out of sight in the boot or glove box. In the last two days we have caught an opportunist thief carrying a satellite navigation device in the early hours of the morning fortunately we managed to find the car it was from and return it before the motorist discovered it missing. The thief has been charged and put before the Court as he was already on bail for another offence. Very recently I brought to your attention the huge increase in walk in thefts this is unfortunately continuing with gymnasiums, doctors surgeries and libraries all having reported thefts in the past two weeks.
Please ensure that you look after your personal property whilst at the gym and use a locker. Never leave pens, lap tops or tablet computers unattended at the library if you go to the desk or coffee machine. At your workplace use a locker if provided, ensure staff areas are locked with a security coded door if possible and challenge anyone who you do not recognise as being a member of staff. Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers recently attended a multi agency event held at Winchcombe School. This event which gave young members of our communities help and advice on a range of issues from mental health, internet security , to drug and alcohol abuse issues. The whole school which has over 400 students had a variety of sessions which was pitched at an appropriate level for their age. This
event was a great success and it has shown the students the police are approachable and willing to help not just there to arrest people when they have done something wrong. I managed to get out into Tewkesbury during the recent two day Mop Fair it was very well attended with many families out enjoying themselves. The police attendance was an excellent opportunity to engage with our local residents and visitors alike and the there were no reported issues of anti social behaviour. This was another local event that I had heard about from colleagues on many occasions but it was the first time that I had attended. The charity coffee morning held at the council offices in aid of Macmillan cancer support raised in excess of ÂŁ350 so a very big thank -you to all took time to bake cakes and attend this worthwhile event. GOOD START FOR TOWN RUGBY XV Tewkesbury RFC have enjoyed a great start to the season with four league victories in five games. Very convincing wins against Dursley, Gordon League, Painswick and Southmead last month in the Gloucestershire Premier League got the season away with a real a flourish. This month Tewkesbury travel to Stroud (Nov 2nd), Newent (Nov 9th) and Bristol Saracens (Nov 30th).
