The theme of this novel is Tuberculosis, and how some survived TB and other's passed away. In part it is also the story of the creation of the NHS. The story is set in a clinic in Kent in 19491951, as that establishment is taken over by the NHS and instead of taking only private patients also starts to treat the less privileged. Twins Lenny and Miriam Lynskey, from the East End are sent to the clinic after Lenny fails his National Service Medical, and both are diagnosed with TB. Home rest fails, the more disciplined environment is proposed. They are city folk, and the Kent countryside feels foreign, they do not intend to stay, but despite Miriam being immediately restricted to a bed on a balcony, whatever the weather, and Lenny on a gentler routine, time passes and they remain. We meet various patients within the clinic, but the principal characters are Valerie, Miriam's room mate, who widens the twins outlook by sharing reading out aloud. Also a German ex-prisoner, Hannah and her friend Sarah who is instrumental in getting some of the first NHS trial samples of Streptomycin to the clinic in the hope it will cure Sarah. The resident Doctor, is a strange individual, not likeable, but he selects some patients for the trial, and the reader experiences these treatments alongside the descriptions of

the much more severe options including surgery, all of which are recorded in detail, without being too morbid, and reflect the author's deep research into her subject. Finally there is Persky an American sailor sent there to recover; he is very disruptive to the staid routine of the clinic, altering the regime, and affecting the lives, and future relationships of staff and the twins. The storyline follows how the recipients of the Streptomycin react, but the involvement of the twins Uncle Manny has a transformational outcome on the lives of the main characters, who as the book concludes in 1953, and then closes in the new Millenium, have moved on but are forever bound together by their experiences in the clinic. It is very well written, the period detail is great, the medical background interesting, and the totality is a first class read.

FLOWER POWER! There has been more success for Tewkesbury in the Heart of England in Bloom competition. After two years of being included in the town’s portfolio, Avon Lock was included in this year's judging route. And it didn’t disappoint. The judges were heard to comment on the beautiful borders and wildlife zones while being amazed at the regularity of the garden flooding. Nicola Lancaster, the town’s Lock Keeper at Avon Lock has worked hard to improve the area over her three years in the job, at the portfolio stage she was awarded two successive Silver Gilt certificates by the Tewkesbury in Bloom committee but this year she struck gold! “I realised that with a little extra help we could do really well this year so; I asked for it” Nicola says. Both Avon Navigation Trust and Maritime Volunteer Service volunteers came to her aid and gave up their time to put in some hard work. “The place looked idyllic” Nicola goes on to say “I couldn’t have reached gold standard without their help”. The Avon Navigation Trust (the charity responsible for maintaining and improving the River Avon from here all the way to

Stratford-upon-Avon) recently regenerated the Hangings Village Green and Nicola sourced some donated picnic tables and chairs as well as two benches for people to relax on. “I think the judges could see the ongoing commitment to make the lock a destination for all, not just a cut through for boaters”, said Nicola. Nicola also has a plan to provide interest all year round with seasonal planting. There was success in the Heart of England in Bloom Competition for Tewkesbury’ Abbey Tea Rooms too, who scooped a Gold Award. Judge Roger Bache said: “Absolute superlative wall to wall planting in this charming Tea

Specimen plants, annuals and perennials abound. “If here is any unused space, and it’s a big if, it is filled with many and varied items from the owners own quirky collectables hoard. “In fact it seems there must spend more time collecting than selling tea and cakes when you couple the garden with what’s on display in the premises themselves. “In essence the horticulture is simply Chelsea Show standard a credit to Pixie and her Under Gardener.” Priors Park Community Garden also struck gold and achieved level 5 in the Heart of England Awards too. TEWKESBURY RFC held the Bram and Chris Lane memorial event charity presentation last month. The Wooden Spoon Society, the children’s charity of rugby, were represented by Paul Hipkiss and Tim Heal. They advised all funds raised in Gloucestershire are spent on Gloucestershire projects for disabled and under privileged children. Ben Foster-Smith said "Our exercise incorporated as many aspects of our afloat training as possible. The scenario was that following a boat fire on the cruiser MVS Pirata the Unit was given a GPS position and called out to search for any survivors. The stricken boat was located 3 miles away at Twyning and nearby they found an upturned dinghy On righting this they discovering their dummy BOB (Body Overboard) trapped underneath and using their Fibrelight rescue cradle they successfully managed to get BOB into one of their inflatable boats. Meanwhile another section of the Unit was searching on land and under the M5 bridge found a so called injured casualty namely Russ Davidson. After administrating First Aid they helped Russ into their Rigiflex boat to be taken aboard their cruiser Minerva which was anchored out in the river. With their final casualty dummy Bosun Green found and rescued

native exercise and the evening certainly tested all our skills. Ben and Russ are thanked for planning and setting it all up.”

with John Dixon Tewkesbury Historical Society I was delighted when Rosemary Wherrett sent me a recent acquisition and I naturally contacted Jack Boskett to ask his help in showing the area today, writes John Dixon. I was historically drawn to the older photograph – taken from the Abbey Tower – by the cricket pitch with the men preparing the square – and the houses in modern Howells Road, which help us date it. Howells Road was named after George Potter Howell who was three times Mayor of Tewkesbury from 1923 to 1930 and a builder by trade. The Council cast its eyes on the area for housing after 1933 when it decided on a ‘5 Year Clearance Plan’ to be rid of 50 alley homes, displacing 196 people. The building of 16 houses [costing £15k each at today’s prices!] began in 1938 and the first social event was a marriage of a Miss Hodges of no 12 on Boxing Day of 1938. Railes Meadow was presented to the Town by Mayor, builder Thomas Collins, “for any purpose they thought fit.” The ideas were to provide a children’s playground – or an Isolation Hospital for infectious diseases! It was used for public events such as a big square-fronted tent called the “Tabernacle” where children were christened. A lad born in 1926 recalled that “we called it 'The Black' from the soil there”. … There was a Perry Orchard where the Camping Site is now and above that there were gardens. People kept pigs there”. In 1929 there was even a suggestion to build a swimming pool there! I would be grateful to learn when it was first used as a car park but it may have followed 1951 when the council provided £200 for “filling holes, levelling and fencing”. Apart from the cricket pitch and caravan park, we can be sure that today the only hedged areas are footpaths and the only green areas are in the flood plain!

THE ABBEY MILL Here is a charming comparison of what was Abel Fletchers Mill taken from a photo dated 1916 and how little it has changed in 2017. The Mill at the time was a Cafe, Antique Centre and a place from which, to view the Tewkesbury Ham. Some notable points are, on the later view a previously bricked up window, presumably to avoid window tax, (a revenue raising method that ruined the look of many old buildings) has been opened up again and the sign on the wooden structure next to the Wier reads: Footpath to Severn Wier and Bathing place. This was a spot on the Severn where young and old used to go for a swim. You may also note, the discolouration on the brick work caused by the rotation and splashing from the water wheel in it’s pit just to the left of the entrance. Our other photo shows the water wheel today in a very sorry state. How nice it would be to see it restored, even if it didn't work again. Today the mill is a residential development, but still retains its former charm.

Dachshund- pronounced DAKS-HUND, not Dashhound, and it come in three varieties, smooth haired, wirehaired and long haired, writes Nigel Sligh of Animals Only. They are classified as miniatures if they weigh under eleven pounds, standards if they are over sixteen pounds and between eleven and sixteen pounds they are called tweenies. The earliest references to these dogs go back to Ancient Egypt, where there are engravings of shortlegged hunting dogs and discoveries of mummified dachshund-like remains in burial urns. It is, however, understood that the Dachshund was developed in Germany. There are documents mentioning dashsel, badgercreeper and earthdogs and also illustrations of dogs resembling the Dachshund dating back to the 15th and 16th century. In the 1800s they were bred for pets rather than hunting, and became popular in the royal courts. Queen Victoria was fond of this breed of dog. It was at this time, the size gradually reduced to under ten pounds, thus the Miniature Dachshund

was developed. The Dachshund is classified as a scent hound in the USA and Great Britain, but is classified within the terrier group in some other countries. Dachshund literally translates from German, meaning ‘badger dog’. This dog was bred to scent and chase badgers and burrow dwellers, packs of Dachshunds were even used to trail wild boar. In the USA they have been used to hunt prairie dogs and wounded deer. Due to their association with Germany, a Dachshund name Waldi, was chosen to be the first official mascot for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

When a sharp eyed youngster out on the Tewkesbury trip boat spotted a swan with a large lump in its neck he drew it to the attention of boat skipper Will Fish who is also an MVS member. Will said "I watched the bird carefully every time I passed it during the day and realised it was in obvious distress so I contacted the Vale Wildlife Hospital who said they would come out to it but they needed the use of a boat." Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service were pleased to offer their help with this and Martin Brookes who is Manager of Vale Wildlife Hospital was taken out in one of the Unit's boats to find the casualty

PRESENTATIONS FOR One year on and FLORAL CHAMPIONS business is blooming for Bluebell Wood Florist

For those individuals who were not able to attend the Town Mayor's Floral presentation evening last month, Peggy invited them to join her for tea and cake in the Mayor's Parlour along with the Chair of Tewkesbury in Bloom.

On October 1st 2016 Jackie Dean's dream came true when she opened her new florist shop, Bluebell Wood, in her home town of Tewkesbury. She waited patiently for the perfect shop to become available, which it eventually did, in Barton Street. It's a gorgeous shop, full of beautiful flowers and gifts for all occasions. From her shop she aims to make every bouquet, arrangement and gift special - and unique to the individual. Twelve months since opening the doors, the business has gone from strength to strength. “I’ve had lots of support from Tewkesbury people who really wanted us to succeed - which we are so very grateful for,” said Jackie. “I’ve made many new friends, especially in Barton Street, and we’ve been able to steadily expand the business too. “In March I took on Jess as my apprentice, and she is progressing really well with her Level 2 City and Guilds in Floristry.” Bluebell Wood’s success has been recog-

They were voted ‘Best Florist in Gloucestershire’ by their customers in the Muddy Stiletto Awards, won Gold in Tewkesbury in Bloom for best retail shop display, and received a special recognition for Kids Club by helping in Tewkesbury in Bloom’s submission. Local children painted and planted tubs with floral displays. “During the year we took delivery of a new Van, Jackie added. “We now offer free local delivery for up to

three miles and provide a great UK-wide next day delivery service using our lovely flowers.” Jackie also praised her husband Ricki for his support as ‘technical manager.’ With his help she has opened a new workshop in-store which will enable her to share her knowledge with children and adults. ALONG THE SEVERN AT UPTON Upton-upon-Severn is a delightful riverside town with an interesting history, writes Jack B. Walker. In grew in importance as a port centuries ago, and was also one of the few crossing places of the Severn between Tewkesbury and Worcester. Today it attracts tourists all year round, plays host to several music festivals and is a haven for boating enthusiasts. River defences now protect the town from the waters of the Severn, but please check local flood warnings before setting off! This is a totally flat walk, which starts from the free car park in the town centre, next to Upton Rugby Club. Leave the car park and cross over the road opposite the parish church (1). Turn right along the pavement, and just before the Fire Station, bear left into Minge Lane. At the t-junction with Rectory Road (2), turn right and carry on along to its end. At the end of the road bear right and go down the lane which leads to

River Severn at Upton from the Ham Buryend Farm (3). Pass through the farm and follow the way markers which lead across fields and down the River Severn. When you meet the riverbank, (4) turn left and follow the footpath keeping the Severn on your right. You are now on the Lower Ham, and as you pass the old railway embankment, you will

see the vast expanse of the main ham ahead of you. This is a popular spot for anglers and walkers; the path you are now on is part of the long distance Severn Way. Dogs should be kept on leads as sheep graze here from August to February. Upton Ham is a nature reserve, and is traditionally managed to

preserve flora and fauna. Due to the Severn floods, the soil is very rich and many rare wild flowers and plants thrive here. Carry on along the path. The buildings on the opposite bank are a waterworks, and a little further along - as you reach Upton - you can see the entrance to the marina, where many pleasure craft are moored. At the end of the ham go through the gate and on to a tarmac road (5). Continue to walk with the river to your right, bearing right at the Swan Hotel. This inn was regularly flooded before the green barriers between it and the quays were installed. After passing several pubs, turn left (6) to return to the town centre. The former church on

The Tewkesbury Chair Challenge This creative event took place during October in Tewkesbury Abbey and was organised by Amanda Thomas, who tells us about the event in her own words.

BLASTS FROM THE PAST! It is a time of change for motoring – autonomous cars, the possible slow phasing out of diesel engines, the trend toward electric propulsion etc. In order to examine the route that the British motor industry has taken to reach this point, members of two local Probus clubs, plus friends, recently visited the British Motor Museum, near Gaydon in Warwickshire. Upon arrival the Group enjoyed a ‘private’ introductory tour, which gave a good overview of the Museum and its history, together with details of specific landmark vehicles. See photograph. Following the tour, members of the Group ‘did their own thing’ and enjoyed the wonderful display of wonderful cars, including those in the Reserve Collection. In addition to cars themselves (including Prototypes, Film & TV Cars, Record Breakers and Royal Cars) members of the Group could enjoy the motoring cinema, and many exhibits such as those featuring gas turbines and the manufacture of British vehicles. This museum, which is adjacent to the extensive facilities of Jaguar Land Rover, houses ‘The world's largest collection of historic British cars’ and there can be little doubt of that. Last month’s Tewkesbury Direct featured ‘Walter’ who, on June 1st 1914, sent a postcard of the Lower Lode to his parents in Birmingham. The article speculated as to whether he served in the Great War. The answer is that he did. Two local readers, Sam Eedle and Malcolm Waldron, both members of the Western Front Association, have established that he was Walter Kite, born on May 10th 1892 in Aston and, from at least 1901, living at the same Birmingham address as on the postcard. In 1911 he was employed as a builder in an electrical works. The card was posted on a Monday so is possible that he was in Tewkesbury on business. Walter enlisted on January 2nd 1915 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshires in France on June 30th. Many Birmingham men served in that regiment as there were not enough local men there to fill the ranks. He served the rest of that year on the Western Front, where his battalion took part in an infamous diversion-

Front of postcard from 1914 ary attack at Bois Grenier in late September 1915. This failed attack was carried out in an attempt to draw the Germans away from the battle of Loos further south. At some point later that year or early the following year Walter fell sick and he was discharged on April 13th 1916. What that sickness was we do not know, as his army papers were destroyed in WW2, but many men serving in the trenches

went down with diseases caused either by drinking foul water or being bitten by lice. Back as a civilian, he would have worn a Silver War Badge on his lapel to show that he had served. It is possible, though not confirmed, that he re-enlisted upon recovery. He survived the war, married in 1919, was still working in the building and electrical trade in 1939. He died in Devon on November 1st 1970.

FISH ALLEY Fish Alley runs from Barton Street to Swilgate Road, or ‘Back of Swilgate’ as it was known before street signs. It is one of a series of alleys which used to run between these two streets, several of which remain, though the warren of courts and yards within the alleys have now gone. Early names were Jeynes’ Alley and Bell’s Alley. In 1848, though, when the Council had name plates made for all the alleys it was called Fish Alley and so it remains. The name seems to have come from the connection with fish, there being fishermen and fishmongers living there in some numbers. The history of the people who lived there suggests that ‘Soldier’s Alley’ would have been just as appropriate a name. Writing in 1905, John Rogers remembered Joseph Witts (who had

died in the previous year, aged 81), whose grandfather, Joe, fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, defending Boston in the American war of Independence. One of the battles the British won! In 1899, Private Rice was writing to his sister, Mrs Hughes, telling her about his exploits at Ladysmith, in South Africa. He was concerned that she would see his name in the reports as killed in action, and wanted to reassure her that this was his namesake, also in the Gloucestershire Regiment. Though the

fighting was desperate, he was safe. Also living in Fish Alley was Mrs Sarah Bennett who had four sons who went to war against the Boers. Three were with the “Old Braggs” (the North Gloucestershire Regiment) and the fourth, Thomas, was with the Scots Guards. Charles was wounded at Reitfontein and hospitalised in Ceylon. Queen Victoria sent £2 to Mrs Bennett as a mark of Royal appreciation. Like many heroes returning home, not everything went smoothly for the Bennetts, unfortunately. Thomas had been badly affected, to the extent that he was twice, in 1908 and 1914, brought before the magistrates for the crime of attempted suicide. Though he was treated sympathetically, he still spent time in custody awaiting trial.

The magistrates saw his drinking as the problem, and restricted access to his pension to control it. In the First World War, Sapper Sam Heath, RE, was wounded in 1918; Private John Greening of the West Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action in the same year. By 1939, most of the cottages in Fish Alley had gone, and there were no sons to go to war. Fish Alley doesn’t follow the regular layout. The entrance off Barton Street was lead on to a labyrinth of small courts cheek-by-jowl with cottages; nineteen of them altogether. This made it one of the most heavily populated alleys in the town. An unusual feature is the dogleg in the alley, which is a result of its unusual layout. Fish Alley lies behind two… continued on P47.

OUR ALLEYWAYS continued… front houses. Behind No. 69a, the front building, is an open area and the alley changes sides, to the plot behind No 70 down to Swilgate Road. Once, these two sections were called Fish Alley East and West. This created room for courts and ‘back to back’ high-density housing. The condition of the alley led to early clearance. An order was conto demolish firmed twelve cottages in 1937, despite the impassioned objection of Alderman George Howell, who happened to own several of them. His objection was that several were occupied by old people who would have difficulty settling in to new houses. In 1939, the demolition was carried out. Alderman Howell had a miraculous escape when a roof unexpectedly collapsed on him whilst he was watching the work. He suffered nothing worse than bruising. The demolition of Peachey’s and Myrtle courts to the west, with nothing being built to replace the lost buildings, changed the landscape of the alley. A few houses remain, and among these is a block of what was once four cottages built into

courts, now converted into two houses. There are plenty of remnants of what was once a

teeming alley, but it takes a lot of imagination to picture the alley as it once was.

NEWTOWN W.I We have had a very busy and varied couple of months. During the September meeting we were visited by the John Moore Museum to talk to us about the tastes of the Tudors. This month we were lucky to be visited by a member of the Queen's Body Guard of the Yeoman of the Guard. He explained all aspects of his ceremonial duties, the meaning of the symbols on their uniform etc and also the difference between themselves and the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London - an extremely interesting talk. A group of us also visited the Gloucester Waterways Museum to learn the art of rug ragging - many thanks to all the very patient ladies from the museum. Next month is our A.G.M. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Mitton W.I. is a fairly new group, and we meet every first Monday of each month at Mitton Manor Primary School. Betty told us “It takes you out of yourself, it is really good recreation, with girls having fun together, I joined in 1974 and I have been playing for the same team ever since.” Marie added “It provides great exercise with

The view shows the slipway for the river ferry with the Steam Launch, Jubilee heading upstream to Bredon. Much of the view remains unchanged over a period of 108 years, the slipway has disappeared, the end chimney on the inn has disappeared and the Georgian sash windows, in the large have been replaced. The writer speculated, that the tree between the Inn and the waterfront in the modern view, may have been the small bush pictured in the original. On the reverse of the card the writer comthe ments that there is little to do, but there is plenty to eat and drink. Today the Fleet Inn still provides good food and drink to visitors of this picturesque spot.

The weather was perfect for last month’s first ever SUP-Bike-Run triathlon, held at Croft Farm Waterpark, Bredon’s Hardwick. The ultimate triathlon features stand up paddleboarding (SUP), mountain biking and trail running. Organiser Chris Warren said: “Quite a few participants had never paddle boarded before, so were thrown in at the deep end at the event but all handled it very well. “Everyone loved going up the hill and some cracking times were made by all. 3 laps of the lake to finish to complete the event. “Fastest time of 1hr 10 mins by Local Triathlete Owen Grant and followed by top girl and 2nd place local Husky racer Vickie Pullin with 1hr 20. “Also, from a mixture of donations, some entries and post race massages we managed to raise £250 towards Spinal Research. “Feedback from the event was amazing so bring on next year, its only going to get bigger and better as time goes on.

NATURAL SELECTION A fresh and vibrant exhibition of textile art based on the natural world will be held at Nature in Art this month. The display will feature a variety of techniques using fabric, thread and paper. The exhibition takes place from Tues 7th - Sun 19th November. Nature in Art is at Wallsworth Hall, off the A38 at Sandhurst, between Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is running special train services to the North Pole and Lapland next month. There is a choice of two magical journeys - by vintage railcar north from Toddington to Laverton (Lapland), with Santa visiting families on the train. Steam trains will leave Cheltenham Racecourse for Winchombe (The North Pole) where children can meet the great man in his grotto.
