Tewkesbury Foodbank benefits from harvest festival donations Harvest Festival services took place in local churches and schools in early October. In celebrating the success of the harvest, there were many generous donations of food.

Tewkesbury Foodbank was one of the beneficiaries, receiving over 800kgs of food donations which will be distributed to those in need locally. Tewkesbury Foodbank provides emergency food aid for up to 60 people each month. It operates from Holy Trinity Church Hall, in Oldbury Road, thanks to the generosity of the

COSTA, BRAVO! Costa Coffee in Tewkesbury is arranging for local schools to perform in store in the run up to Christmas. Events are taking place to raise funds for the Costa Charity Foundation, which supports local schools and educational initiatives. The first event is to be on Friday 6th November at Costa in the High Street, 6pm 8pm. Mitton Manor School will be singing, and there will be a raffle and lots going on. Mitton Manor School are looking for percussion instruments and local Costa managers Sasha and James are hopeful that they may be able to help fund some of these. Other events will follow on hopefully with other school choirs singing in the run up to Christmas. Everyone is invited to attend.

RUNNERS IN THE PINK Tewkesbury's first Pink Fun Run last month was a great success with over one hundred entrants contributing to the massive fundraising total of £2,000 for Cancer Research UK, writes Shelby Powell. Organisers based at Bookworm Bookshop say donations and sponsorship monies are still coming in. Fine weather, good organisation, plus great teamwork from local organisations including Tewkesbury Rotary Club and the Brownies ensured the event was a success. The organisers wish to thank County Councillor Vernon Smith for releasing 'Active Together' grant monies to cover the running costs of the event, staff at Tesco (Bishops Walk)

for supplying bottles of water for the runners, Morrisons for providing funding to cover the cost of refreshments, and Kare Plus Gloucester for sponsorship monies and for providing goodie bags for the runners. There are special mentions for a whole host of individuals including Alistair 'Ali' Parker who started the race off from Wheatpieces Community Centre. Ali from Bredon is a former contestant on the BBC 2 hit series Ultimate Hell Week, an extreme endurance mili-

GARDEN PLAQUE WINNERS CHOSEN The Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough Council recently met up with members of the Friends Of Victoria Gardens committee to consider the results of the wall plaque competition. Twenty two entries were received and judging was hard. In the end the winner Janet Green from Tewkesbury Art Society was chosen as winner. Everyone felt that her design reflected the true essence of the gardens. Second place went to Joe Lamerton from Alderman Knight School, and third went to the Wheatpieces Brownie group. It is hoped that both of these designs can also be used in some way. The plaque will be unveiled at the Borough Cincilowned gardens open day on July 3rd 2016.

by Paul Lynch PB £8.99 This is a sad book, but if you pass it by for that reason you will be missing a treat. Anyone who read 'Red Sky in the Morning', the author's first novel, and one reviewed in Tewkesbury Direct, should be tempted to pick up this new story. Barnabus Kane, son Bobby and wife Eskra are back in Ireland having emigrated back to their parent's homeland. Barnabus as a steeplejack earned good money which he has invested into a farm. It is 1945, the war in Europe is moving towards its conclusion. Ireland though neutral, has rationing and the life of an Irish farmer is not easy. The book opens dramatically with events that change their lives, spoil the idyll and have many ramifications. Barnabus and his helper Matthew are working in the fields when smoke is seen. They rush back to find the byre alight and Mathew perishes as do all the cattle and Barnabus himself is only saved by a neighbour. He suffers depression and it takes him

a long time to even clean up the rotting carcasses let alone start to rebuild their farm and their lives, all of which is complicated by the simple fact that Barnabus, saving overheads, had not renewed their insurance. Eventually Barnabus pulls himself together and doggedly starts a solo manual effort of reconstruction. It is against this backdrop that we see their lives evolve and also learn more about Billy. The conclusions (a deliberate plural) make this striking the story it is. Enjoyed by your reviewer and appreciated for its style and Irishness. AUTUMN ON ALDERTON Although steep in parts with some muddy footpaths, this walk into the woods on Alderton Hill, is very rewarding on Autumn Days. Park on the outskirts of the village, with respect to local residents.

䡵 Distance: approx. 3.5 miles, some steep ascents and muddy footpaths. 䡵 Car Parking: Lane side near the Recreation Ground or with care in Alderton village. 䡵 Refreshments: The Gardeners Arms, Alderton. There is also a village stores.

The first part of the route follows a section of the long distance ‘Winchcombe Way,’ so it is well signposted. From the Beckford Road, take the path north along the side of a field towards a gap, and then follow the Winchcombe Way marker diagonally left across a field to a stile in a hedge (1). Keep the same line across the next field to another stile and over a footbridge, taking the route towards the corner of the woods which are clearly visible on Alderton Hill (2).

As the hedge gets closer, look for the stile on the right, go over it and across towards the stile into the woods (3). Follow the green lane through the trees as it skirts around the base of the hill. Deer are abundant here, in a reserve well managed by the Dumbleton Estate. At the end of the wood, go through the gate and across a meadow to reach a five bar gate with a stile beside it (4). Do not head towards the farm, or take the footpath ahead - but turn right and follow the blue bridleway markers up a steep slope towards another five bar gate. Go through and back into the wood, following the bridleway as it continues to climb. This path can be very muddy after rain at this time of year - and the climb is fairly challenging! As the path levels out and a field becomes visible on your left, you may catch sight of the landmark Broadway Tower high on the Cotswold scarp to the east. Eventually the bridle-

way meets a lane coming up from Dumbleton. Turn right, and at the signpost follow the directions to Alderton (5). The steep descent takes you across a lane (6) and then down over a field with the hedge to

your left. Go over a footbridge (7) and along the field boundary. Cross a stile into a paddock (8) and through a kissing gate into an alley, which brings you back into Alderton. At the road(9) go right, back to the car.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society The Cross is the meeting point of the three main roads of Tewkesbury and it looks today as if it was designed to display our war memorial, which makes a very effective roundabout to separate the traffic. There are those, however, who think that this is the wrong position for our Memorial as, of course, to dare to cross the road to study the names commemorated invites a serious accident. The War Memorial was only been located there for 93 years and it was erected at a time when there was little motor traffic. The photograph above seems very strange as there is nothing in the middle of the intersection – except the cart meandering along. So what role did the location play before 1922? Informal events took place as in 1855 when the “Annual Stock Fair (was) held and the Cross was completely filled with rustic pleasure seekers”. The Town Council, however, considered something more grand should be erected. That same year was erected a “Handsome New Column … for a central Lamp, [which] will stand 16ft high, its weight is over a ton and a half. However, although it was designed to use the new-fangled gas for lighting the area, enthusiasm waxed and waned. By 1858, proposals appeared for the display there of a Russian Gun, captured in the Crimean War. This gun was eventually given to the Victoria Pleasure Gardens in 1897. At this time the surface was cobbles - yet they were soon removed for the coronation of King Edward VII on 28 June 1902, when an “awning big enough for 500 (was) erected at the Cross – 2-3000 people ate 2,000 lbs of beef”. To repeat that spectacle in 2015 would be an invitation to disaster! Is this busy road roundabout really the most sensible location of our War Memorial? John Dixon

Tewkesbury Taekwondo club excels at recent grading MASTER CLIVE HARRISON’S FAMILY TAEKWONDO (MCHF TKD) have just had a very successful coloured belt grading where eleven of their children have earned promotion to their next grade, with five students gaining an “A” level pass, the highest pass level possible. Grading examiner was Mr Peter Hewitt 5th Degree Black Belt who travelled up from Swindon. Mr Hewitt is extremely experienced and has been training for over twenty years. MCHF TKD Chief Instructor Master Clive Harrison 8th Degree Black belt was very pleased with his students efforts “Our students worked extremely hard to achieve their grade and should be very proud of themselves”. The successful stu-

The annual Christmas lights switch on takes place in the top central car park on Saturday 20th November at 5pm when Father Christmas pops in as master of ceremonies to delight the crowd. Abdul Shahid, who is chef at the Crystal Rivers, 117-118 High Street, Tewkesbury GL20 5JY, was one of 40 chefs to receive official recognition for their contribution to an industry worth more than £4.2billion a year. Chef Abdul said: “To win this title is the greatest vote of confidence I could wish for, not just for myself but for my team who work so hard to make things

GOODNESS, STRAIGHT FROM THE FARM

One of Tewkesbury’s best kept secrets lies behind the hedgerows on the slopes of Mythe Hill. Just one mile out of town from the Black Bear Inn, on the left of the road, is Mythe Villa Farm Shop.

Established in 1948, the land around the shop has been worked by the Roberts family ever since. They started to sell produce from the farm gate, and over the

years established a reputation for the freshness of their vegetables. Farmer Clive Roberts now sells hay bales to pet, chicken and horse owners - as well as other

farms. “To buy a half bale or full bale is such good value compared to smaller packages sold in pet shops and other retail outlets, said Clive. “They can last for ages - and we have many different varieties on offer, including seed hay, meadow hay and wheat straw.” The farm shop is run by family members Clive, Kate, Marie, Peter and Martyn - and is open six and a half days a week, from 9am until

FOOTBALL FOR CHILDREN Football for children in Tewkesbury is thriving thanks to the continuing success of the Tewkesbury Town Colts. With 20 active teams over 250 players have just kicked off a new season and are enjoying weekly training sessions, league and friendly matches. Formed in 1975 Tewkesbury Town Colts has never been in better shape; providing football for children aged 5-18 in a safe and fun environment where all are encouraged regardless of skill level. For younger children aged 5-8 the Colts offer a Saturday morning soccer school open to boys and girls, for all older age groups there are teams formed playing in several local leagues. Girls’ football is growing particularly well and is an area the Colts are especially proud of. Currently there are 3 teams - U10, U12 and U14, but with growing numbers every week there is a strong chance that other teams can be

formed and the Colts are keen to get a U8 team up and running as well. Speaking as the Tewkesbury Town Colts Press Officer, Toby Philpott says “This is a great team game, plus the girl’s benefit from keeping fit in a safe and supportive environment.” The Tewkesbury Town Colts are proud to be one of just 13 community standard clubs in Gloucestershire and benefit from an active committee of parent volunteers to ensure the development and welfare of all players and coaches involved. On the social side the club have developed links with Cheltenham Town Football Club and

often make trips to watch games, become mascots and take stadium tours. Some of the older teams have experienced football tours to other parts of the country and most sides create a bond for parents and players alike with Christmas parties and summer barbeques. K2TOGS/YARN BOMBING THE TEWKESBURY HORSES K2Togs are a community knitting group who emerged from knitting the beanstalk for the Roses Theatre pantomime 2 years ago, when the community joined up to produce over 200m of green beanstalk which adorned the theatre upstairs and down. The beanstalk was subsequently converted to blankets for overseas aid. The group have been supported by Community Builder Jane Griffiths, who is based at The Roses, and is employed by Barnwood Trust as part of their ‘You're Welcome’ ABCD programme. ABCD, or Asset Based Community Development is about looking for the strengths and assets within a community and connecting people around their passions, and so building a resilient and inclusive community from the ground up.

K2Togs have grown from a core group of knitters who wanted to continue to meet weekly, and found an outlet for knitted squares which were converted to colourful blankets for AIDS orphans. The group has continued to grow in size to over 30 members who meet weekly (for non-knitters, K2Tog is the abbreviation for ‘Knit 2 together’ and the group is all about ‘knitting people together’) and they knit for community projects, including bunting for Tewkesbury's Big Weekend (more Asset

Based Community Development) and producing over 100 ‘Twiddlemuffs’ for patients with dementia in local care homes. Their projects also include the annual Tewkesbury pantomime. They've done beanstalks and Chandeliers, and there isn't long to wait to find out what they will come up with for Cinderella this year. Always looking to use their skills to enhance their own community, they were aware of concerns in some quarters about the resilience of Tewkesbury’s guardian horses, Victor and

Vanquished, during the coming winter months. The horses and their lone rider are now cosily muffled against the elements, and in keeping with K2Togs community mindfulness, the scarves will eventually serve a secondary purpose as blankets in local pet sanctuaries. Because K2Togs are connected, in ABCD style, by their shared passions (for community and crafting), they are able to include and support people of all abilities, including some with a variety of health concerns who benefit from belonging to a social

group. The group meet on Wednesday mornings from 10.30-12.30

OFFICIAL OPENING OF ASHCHURCH STATION GARDENS Three years ago Network Rail offered the Ashchurch, Tewkesbury & District Rail Promotion Group an unkempt strip of that company's land between the northbound platform of Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station and Mary P's children's nursery, with a view to conversion to a garden. Over the ensuing period a group of volunteers have transformed the 70mtr long wilderness into a wildlife friendly garden, including a wild

flower meadow, a restored bench for the gardeners and ten raised beds. These latter are individually adopted, with

the planting and designs left to the adopters. On Saturday, 3 October 2015, the garden was officially opened, in front of invit-

ed guests, by Tim Maddocks, Network Rail Customer Service

When did you last check yours? Probably not since it was last serviced! Ok, tyres gradually lose pressure over the weeks and months, so it’s worth having them checked – ACCURATELY. If you’re not too confident about doing it yourself, take it to someone who does – and make sure their equipment has been recently calibrated. If you really want to get serious, have a spare set of wheels, (steel will do), fitted with snow tyres. How good are they? AMAZING!. Screenwash: You’re going to need quite a bit to clear the salt from the windscreen – and there’s nothing worse on your way to work or home, than finding the reservoir’s empty, or its frozen up! If it has frozen, don’t keep trying to operate the washer

pump, because if it can’t turn, you’ll very quickly burn the motor out. We recommend you fill your washer bottle with 10% screenwash, (usually enough, except for a severe frost) and fill up with hot water – yes: HOT water. The reason? Cold water contains algae, which if left for long periods in the washer bottle, can clog the system. You’ll notice it when the fluid coming onto the screen has a ‘gel like’ consistency. Hot tap water, (not boiling!!),once cooled down, will stay fresh for months. Antifreeze: If your car’s been serviced properly, you shouldn’t have to worry about this, because all modern engines will usually have a coolant mixture of around 50% antifreeze to water, but it’s worth having it checked, particularly if the service history’s a bit patchy.

Lights: How many cars have you seen coming towards you with one headlight out recently? Check yours – and if you have got a bulb out, my advice is DON’T change it yourself. Headlight bulbs on today’s cars are notoriously difficult to get a and equally difficult to fit correctly, without damaging the retainers. You can always tell the ones that have been tackled by the inexperienced; they’re the ones with one headlight dazzling on-coming traffic, or looking at the nearest aircraft! Get a garage to do it. A good idea for peace of mind is to run your car into your favourite repair shop and get them to carry out all these tasks for you. (Saves getting your hands dirty) and you should be confident that the job’s been done properly.

LOCAL AUTHORS NEW BOOK

Writing the commercial history of the Trent & Mersey Canal was not an easy task as the canal company’s records were destroyed in a fire in 1950.

But local author, Tom Foxon, has managed to research the working history of the canal by looking at transactions from the point of view of the canal’s customers and carriers and by researching the records of connecting waterways. Piecing together a history of trade and traffic on this transport artery which, up to 1913, was still carrying over one million tons a year, and which, for 200 years, was a vital link in water transport between the Mersey ports, Manchester and north and south Staffordshire, the East Midlands, Bristol and London. In particular it enabled the growth of

the pottery industry, and there was an important trade in salt from Cheshire and Staffordshire. The operation of the canal, competition, cooperation and agreements with other canals, railways and road haulage, labour relations and the effect of legislation are all dealt with. Tom started working as a canal boatman in 1950, his work on barges took him many places between Stourport and Swansea, and with the decline of river traffic he ended up working as a lock-keeper at Upper Lode on the outskirts of Tewkesbury, and from 1974 he worked on the railway from which he retired in

1998. Tom is a member of various Railway and Canal societies and at the age of 82 he can be found most Sundays racing at the Tewkesbury Cruising and Sailing Club. The book is available from Alison’s Bookshop, High Street, Tewkesbury.

BIG BANK’S SALE OF WILLS AND PROBATE MEANS LOCAL HELP NEEDED The sale of a banking giants’ wills and probate work to a national firm means local people need to act for peace of mind that their will is in order, warns leading Tewkesbury law firm, DF Legal. Senior Partner, John Daniels said the sale of HSBC’s wills and probate to an organisation called Simplify Channel Ltd will cause concern for a number of people in the region. “In our work as experts in wills and probate we have advised many people who have had wills drafted by such organisation’s and in most cases the wills appoint the bank as the executors to act on the will when the person has died,” he said. “Clients of HSBC have been sent a letter giving them the option to sign what is known as a codicil to appoint Simplify or another executor of their choice instead of HSBC, or to inform HSBC that the will is no longer considered to be valid,” he said. Clients were sent the letter earlier in the summer and Simplify will not be able to act as executors unless wills are changed. Mr Daniels said DF Legal can help concerned HSBC customers who need legal advice on the matter. “We would advise clients to make a new will or codicil to amend the executors name in their will and choose someone trusted or a reliable local firm of solicitors to help with the administration of the estate,” he said.

FARM SHOP FUN The official opening of the new Court Farm Shop was met with hundreds of customers who turned out to see this new local enterprise run by Simon Knight and Lisa Grayson. Situated by the railway bridge on the Stoke Road, near Stoke Orchard, the farm shop threw open the doors and visitors were not only treated to a selection of fine produce including local veg, fresh meat preserves and so much more. A really great innovation included for the delight of mainly the

Security at automated teller machines Within the last couple of weeks we have had several incidents of thefts or attempted thefts from automated cash machines, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. The method used are usually very similar. It appears that the preferred locations are located outside supermarkets as opposed to outside the high street banks. The preferred targets are the elderly, persons with disabilities or other vulnerable groups. In most cases the criminal will approach the victim and offer to help by offering to enter the PIN or hold their shopping whilst they enter the PIN themselves. In one recent attempt the criminal was a young woman. The perpetrators will snatch the cash from the machine and make off. Often they will also take the card and can then use it with the PIN to make other withdrawals or purchase goods. This will continue until the card is cancelled or it reaches the spending limit. It is worth remembering that the bank%s are not obliged to refund any monies until you cancel the card. I have prepared

a list of tips to prevent you being a victim of this type of crime: • Scan the whole ATM area before you approach it. Avoid using the ATM if there are suspicious-looking individuals around. • Check to see if anything looks unusual or suspicious about the ATM showing it might have been tampered with. • If it appears to have any attachments to the card slot, cash slot or key pad, do not use it and if possible alert nearby staff or call the police. • Stand close to the ATM and shield the keypad with your hand when keying in your PIN. • If your card gets jammed or retained by the machine or no cash comes out, report this immediately to your bank or building society, ideally using your

mobile phone while you are still in front of the machine. • Check that others in the queue keep a good distance from you. • Keep your PIN secret. Never reveal your PIN to anyone, not to someone claiming to be from your bank, the police and especially not to a "helpful" stranger. • Be especially cautious if strangers try to distract you or offer to help at an ATM, even if your card is stuck or you are experiencing difficulty with the transaction. • Regularly check your account balance and keep your receipt to check against your statement. We all use cash machines and they provide a valuable 24 hour service but please be careful especially if you are making a large withdrawal.

A CHALLENGE HELPS US TO GROW Life can be tough at times, can't it? Wears you down a bit? Yet it's the tough times that bring about the positive changes we need, writes clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor David Slater. A challenge helps us to grow, to change, to learn. Without the occasional challenge we would stand still and pretty soon would get bored. If there was no rain there wouldn't be the lovely feeling that comes when it stops and we can get outside. Lovely days are just that, lovely, but if it was all easy we couldn't get stronger and move forwards. We wouldn't appreciate what we have. Whatever we choose to do we need to feel that we are making an effort. Part of the task needs to make us feel that we are having an uphill struggle but then reaching the peak, enormous satisfaction!

Let's change that a little. Let's call it an upstream struggle where we battle to conquer waterfalls, weirs, torrents, white water. To get to where we want we have to keep swimming. We have no choice because if we were to stop we would be swept away downstream. The effort we put in makes us stronger, more focused, more successful and happier. Achievement that comes after effort brings a wonderful feeling. I know it is not always easy but try and see each setback as a chance to improve. A chance to learn. A chance to become stronger rather than weaker. Many struggles

LIGHTING UP TIME AGAIN This month will see Tewkesbury’s Christmas Lights switched on by Father Christmas on Sunday 22nd November. They will then shine throughout the Christmas season making Tewkesbury one of the best and brightest displays throughout Gloucestershire. On the day of the big switch on, the High Street will be filled with craft stalls, food stalls and entertainment from noon. There’s a welcome return for Steve Kaos the stilt-walker (pictured), who kept the children amused last year. Musical performances from the Tewkesbury Town Training Band and The Ukeladies (from Cheltenham) will entertain the crowds, and the day is capped by a special visit by Father Christmas in his sleigh. Danter’s funfair amusements will also be there. It is an perfect time to buy those important presents and to experience an exciting afternoon in Tewkesbury. Free parking will be available in the town on the day. There is still a need to raise funds to help pay for the lights; there is an opportunity to purchase a Memory Bulb (see form opposite) or if you prefer a donation can be given on line at crowdfunding.justgiving.com/tewkesbury-christmas-lights. The organisation behind the festival of lights in The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury - one of over 1,800 autonomous clubs in the UK. It was founded over 67 years ago and currently has 30 members. Whist it is a lively and active Club, the club always needs more help, and is keen to recruit people who are keen to utilise their skills and resources to help others. Although our primary purpose is to raise funds for various community projects, it also organises a range of social activities with like-minded colleagues with the objective of having fun! If you wish to discuss or seek further information on joining Rotary, the Tewkesbury club will be holding an informal open session in the Town Hall on Sunday 22nd November 2015 during the Christmas Lights switch on. you will overcome. Some may come back but that is what life is all about - peaks and troughs, high times and low times. Hopefully the good will outweigh the bad. The high times will give you chance to grow in strength, to recharge your batteries, to reassess and refocus so that you are prepared for when the next low time will come. Whatever situation you are in now is not forever. It will change in some way. That is almost the pattern of nature. It is the way that you think and react that will be what helps you through the more difficult periods or events. The pressure will lessen.

The sun will reappear from behind that dense black cloud. Your smile is ready to lighten up the world and lighten your way through good times again. Be thankful for your struggles and your ability to tackle them. Keep on with your upstream struggle and remember it is the losers who don't keep going that swim with the stream. There will be times when you use the current to help you but if you totally decide to stop swimming against the current that is when you get swept away. To succeed, keep the effort going and BELIEVE!
