NEW RAF DEFFORD MUSEUM IS A RUNAWAY SUCCESS
The new RAF Defford Museum at Croome Park, north of Tewkesbury, opened its doors at the end of September - and attracted over 1000 visitors in its first week. The new museum is the outcome of ambitions first voiced many years ago by veterans who served at RAF Defford. The airfield closed to flying in 1957, but many veterans were emotional witnesses to the opening ceremony. “This is wonderful, absolutely marvellous”, said 94 year old Albert Shorrock, a former airframes fitter at Defford. Albert was invited to cut the tape at the official opening ceremony which was attended by over 150 people. “We never thought we would see the day,” he added. RAF Defford was a top-secret airfield built in the grounds of Croome Park, now owned by the National Trust. It was at Defford that war-winning airborne radar was developed, tested and proven during the Second World War. By 1945, up to 3000 men and women were serving at the base. The secret work con-

The museum records the achievements of the men and women of RAF Defford - service personnel, scientists and civilian staff. It is a joint venture
between the National Trust at Croome, and Defford Airfield Heritage Group (DAHG) who secured grants from the Evesham-based company Severn Waste Services, and the Heritage Lottery Fund, to restore the building and fit out the museum. The total cost was over £200,000. The museum is
housed in a 1942 former RAF building which has been restored to its wartime appearance. The new museum is open to visitors to Croome Park seven days a week from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm (4pm in winter). For visitors who pay for admission to Croome Park in the normal way (free to National Trust members), there is no charge for admission to the Museum. The Philomusica of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire will be joined by the Cheltenham Youth Choir for part of their commemorative concert in Tewkesbury Abbey this month. The concert will be given on the evening before Remembrance Sunday in support of the work of the Royal British Legion. Pieces by Elgar and Gurney, that were written during the Great War, form the centre part of the concert. There wil also be a performance of The Tsunami Requiem, by Chris Williams, which was written to remember the tragedy that struck the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day 2004. For this part of the concert, Philomusica will be joined by the young singers. Philomusica’s Conductor, Linda Parsons said: “Our choir has always encouraged young musicians and we’re thrilled that this excellent choir will be taking part in the performance.” The concert, on Saturday 8th November, begins at 7.30pm.

On the day, the High Street will be closed to traffic and filled with Craft Stalls, a Farmers’ Market and Funfair, whch will swing into action from 12 noon. Father Christmas is booked to switch on the lights at 5.00pm. Andrew Turner, of Tewkesbury Rotary Club, said “This year there will be even more stalls than usual to help

Less than eighteen months after joining an expanding glazing company in Cheltenham, Jeremy Phillips has been appointed as its Managing Director. After thirteen years in the industry, Jeremy (who was born in Kemerton) joined Cheltenham based Clearway Doors & Windows Ltd as sales manager in June last year. His brief was to develop the retail arm of the business in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Gloucester and the surrounding counties. This included overseeing a major development to create one of the largest door and window showrooms in the area, and taking on the role of developing the range of the company’s products. “The job attracted me initially, because it allowed me to expand into aluminium doors and windows, which are

SWILGATE WORKS WILL PROTECT SUBSTATION Improvements to the River Swilgate in Tewkesbury have included protection measures for an electricity substation near Priors Park. The Environment Agency, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Tewkesbury Nature Reserve Ltd (TNRL) have worked together on the project, which involved lowering areas of the riverbank and floodplain, then using the material to create a flood bund behind an electricity substation in Queen's Road. Banks have also been repaired elsewhere along the course of the river. The small electricity substation, which is located at the edge of the floodplain, flooded in 2007 and left residents living in Priors Park without power for several days.

HELPING HAND FOR ROSES REFURB The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury has been given a helping hand of £150,000 to help kick-start its major refurbishment plans. The 40-year-old theatre building is owned by Tewkesbury Borough Council, and its members have agreed to invest the money to cover some of the essential works that are needed. It will be spent on things such as the replacement of the theatre’s roof, the installation of a lift, the refurbishment of public areas and enlarging of facilities. Theatre Director Deborah Rees said: “We’re delighted that Tewkesbury Borough Council have granted us £150,000 towards our 2015 refurbishment project. “This grant means that we are now over halfway towards our fundraising target. Tewkesbury Borough Council are major partners in this project and we are looking forward to working with them” The theatre has also recently secured £250,000 from the Arts Council to help fund the works. Once the works have been completed, the theatre should be in a strong and sustainable position. Discussions are currently taking place between the council and the theatre’s trust about the future of the lease – with the trust showing a willingness to consider a longer lease with full repairing responsibility.

The creation of the grounds in 1897, however, was very much a municipal enterprise which required volunteers to raise money by subscription. Prior to that it was mainly privately owned wasteland, and was once the site of the “The Pound Wall Roadway”, a serpentine path which followed the line of the ancient roadway which was part of the main road via Deerhurst to Gloucester. The Pleasure Gardens were created in 1897 from subscriptions from the people of Tewkesbury to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. As one might expect, the townspeople were not initially enthusiastic
but eventually the Borough Surveyor created, in the words of Tewkesbury Register, “a thing of beauty beyond question, and we hope that it may prove a joy forever.” Its attraction was enhanced by the gaining of a gun from the Crimean War and a bandstand, both of which succumbed in the austerity of Second World War. Its nadir perhaps came during the inundation of 2007, although, before and since, the volunteers have seen their hard work thwarted by periodic floods.
It also spurred on the volunteers to recreate the beauty of 1897 by encouraging townsfolk once again to subscribe to new entrance arches to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of

Here at Vale Wildlife Hospital we receive calls for help throughout every day from members of the public, vets, the RSPCA and even the police, writes Caroline Gould.

The majority of these calls result in the casualty being brought in to us by the finder e.g. injured hedgehogs, blackbirds and all manner of other small mammals and birds. When we get calls to larger casualties such as badgers, foxes, deer or swans we send our staff out to help because of the risks involved in handling these animals. One day in September we took a call from the police informing us about an emu that had been reported wandering down a lane leading up to the A38 just south of Gloucester. We do already have an emu, Cilla - one of our permanent residents - so we are well aware that there are potential dangers in handling birds such as this. We took all the details and exact location and contacted the finder directly, who informed us that they had managed to herd the emu into a fenced compound used for storing his works equipment and vehicles. We gathered together the equipment that we thought we would need including our large
twenty feet by six feet ‘run-in’ net that we use for deer, not really having a clue how we were going to carry out the ‘rescue’. We got advice from our vet regarding dose rates for sedatives in case this was necessary, hitched up our stock trailer and set off.
When we arrived, we found that the emu, a 56 feet tall flightless bird was in fact a rhea, a smaller but similar bird originating from South America. Nonetheless these birds are still capable of inflicting serious injuries so we approached carefully and Martin swiftly got hold of her and put her into the trailer. She didn’t put up much of a fight and we

soon realised that, as well as a nasty injury on her neck, she was extremely underweight so we guessed that she had been lout for some time, struggling to find food. Over the next couple of weeks she needed some intense treatment as she was so undernourished and weak, we thought we were going to lose her at one stage. We had to tube feed her and also give her fluids by injections under the skin (600mls at a time) and she gradually became stronger until she finally started to eat for herself. Once she did, there was no stopping her and she put on 2.5kgs in the
space of just one week! She was soon well enough to join our other two rheas (also permanent residents) and is well on the way to full health.

This month’s Farmers’ and Craft Market will be held on Abbey Lawns Car Park on Saturday 8th November (9am-1.30pm). For Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service their Annual Fish & Chips Supper and Night Cruise is always a popular event and this year was no exception. At the end of September unit members and partners took three boats including their own training vessel MVS Minerva up through Strensham Lock to the Flybridge at Defford for their supper. Head of Unit Nic Price said "Although we started in the light by the time we came to leave the Flybridge darkness had drawn in and it was a particularly dark that evening on the river as there was no moon. Fortunately many of the members have local knowledge of the river and were able to negotiate the lock and find their way safely back. As well as being a pleasant social occasion it was also good training and practice to use these boats at night. Although this event marks the end of our evening training sessions afloat for the year the unit members will still be kept busy as a full Autumn programme has been planned with meetings every Monday evening mostly at the Day Centre
and members will have the opportunity to be afloat in the day as often as possible too throughout the Winter."

EXPLORER SCOUTS ENJOY ALPINE TRIP OF A LIFETIME During the summer Pioneer Explorer and Network scouts from Tewkesbury joined 1st Staunton scouts on an exciting expedition to Switzerland staying at Kandersteg International Scout Centre with scouts from around the globe. The highlight of the week was hiking to a glacier, staying overnight in an alpine hut with instruction in ice climbing and crevasse rescue practice. Cable cars were used access high level hikes in the surrounding area,
they went sledging on a 700m summer run and spent a day at natural thermal springs. Young people aged 14 – 17.5 interested in joining Pioneer Explorer scouts can contact Chris Lodwig on 01684 295244.

The Mayor told the assembled group how especially good the offering was this year. This was reflected in Tewkesbury's success in the Britain in Bloom competition. NESSIES NIPPERS CHARITY CHRISTMAS FAYRE Local lady Vanessa Tocknell will be holding a special charity event on Sunday 14th December from 11.00am til 3.00pm at Watson Hall. The event will be undercover and will feature activities including face and nail painting, a reptile corner, tombola, raffle and barbeque. There will be a num-
ber of local stalls and it is hoped that the Fire & Rescue Service will be in attendance. More activities will be added once they have been confirmed.
Vanessa, who also runs local childcare group, Nessies Nippers, hopes to raise funds for the NSPCC and the local Pied Piper charity.
Alderman Knight pupils and staff exceed fund raising target Alderman Knight's School aimed to raise ÂŁ2,000 for their charity of the year; but with each year group deciding on a fundraising idea, and with the tremendous support of the staff, they raised a magnificent ÂŁ3,419.42 and presented a cheque to James Rogers, Area Fundraising Manager for CRUK at their assembly this week. James thanked Head Teacher Clare Steel and gave a short presentation showing that the money would be going directly to fund research to find cures for cancers and to improve existing treatments. The children had held a coffee morning, jellyeating contest, a run for life and recycling collection among many other events through out the year.

Mr Rees, whose firm is based on the High Street, said: “In most people’s lives buying a home is the greatest financial transaction they will ever undertake.” He added: “We have buyers sometimes going with whatever seems the cheapest option and this can be a concern as cheap and poor quality often seems to go hand in hand. This can jeopardize moves at worst and give a huge amount of stress for everyone involved at least.” He said: “Dealing with someone on the end of a telephone, who

Ashchurch, Tewkesbury & District Rail Promotion Group have taken another step towards their long term aspirations! Over the weekend of 27/28 September, after discussions and planning between the group and GCC, the station car park was improved by the removal of central flower beds, the result being an increase from 59 spaces to 73, to recognise the continued growth in station usage. Fitting out of the interior is now underway and when complete the history and heritage of the ‘secret airfield’ will be revealed.

There is still another plot of land earmarked for future extension when needed. The main fundraising event for The Kemerton Orchard Workers was the Annual Apple Day held on Saturday 18th October at the Victoria Hall. An afternoon of juicing apples and sales of card and calenders crew locals to the event. The Orchard Workers maintain Daffurns
Orchard which was purchased after the death of Betty Daffurn in 2000 by villagers past and present in Kemerton.

METAL DETECTING WITH STUART BORLEY This month we feature a very large door nail found at Ashchurch. The nail has been hand forged and was used to fix outer and inner timbers together to make the door stronger. Sometimes the nails were driven into the wood and were of such a length that the protuding tip on the other side was hammered over to make the joint stronger, this was know as ‘clinching’ and it is possibly where the word ‘clinch’ originated which implies secure as in clinching a deal. Judging by the size of the nail it came from an important door possibly from a church. The second exhibit is a bit of a mystery. Made of lead it looks like a false teeth bridge, we doubt that, but if anyone can help identify it we would love to hear from them.

The future of the open field The management of most of the parks and playgrounds within the Walton Cardiff estate has recently been taken over by Tewkesbury Borough Council. The Borough Council has proposed that the open field at the end of Starling likely for football. Tewkesbury Borough Council proposes charging to use the pitches to make them self-funding. The Parish Council would like to gauge the views of it is - we know many residents currently use it as a general playing field and/or to walk their dogs. We could look at dividing up the field to create an area for sports and another for dog walkers and /or general use.

VEHICLE SECURITY IN LOCAL BEAUTY SPOTS I have just been looking at recent crime trends and we have had several vehicles broken into at local beauty spots and car parks where motorists leave their vehicles prior to going on a country walk, writes Sgt Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. There are the still drivers leaving valuables on display which is an invitation to opportunist thieves. Even by locking valuables in the boot or glove compartment it only take a second to smash a window which
causes great inconvenience. If possible leave your handbag , satellite navigation device or other valuable loose items at home. Thieves could easily be watching you place any bags in the boot or under the parcel shelf.

As the evenings draw in we often see an increase in certain types crime such as burglary and theft from outbuildings. I know I have said this before but there are easy steps to reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of crime. Make sure that your home is locked even when you are in and close and lock all windows and doors when you leave your home unattended. Give consideration to fitting outside lighting which can be activated by movement this will deter would be thieves and assist you accessing you home safely and quickly when you return. Make sure these lights are positioned high enough that they cannot easily be reached and disarmed or damaged. Always make your home appear occupied by using time switches on lamps in the evening or to have a radio on during the day. If you are going away for a few days ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your property tell them to call the police if they see anyone acting suspiciously in the area. Recently I brought to your attention the huge increase in walk-in thefts this is unfortunately continuing with gymnasiums, doctors surgeries and libraries all having reported thefts in the past two weeks. Please ensure that you look after your personal property whilst at the gym and use a locker. Never leave pens, lap tops or tablet computers unattended at the library if you go to the desk or coffee machine. At your workplace use a locker if provided, ensure staff areas are

The popular Flag & Whistle Restaurant and Tea Room is set to open during the winter months for the first time. Patients who call in to their pharmacy and who request advise and help can now be issued with medication at no charge or a prescription charge (if the patient pays for their prescriptions). It is estimates that 50 million visits are made each year to the GP by patients for minor conditions , that are covered by these schemes

What a childish lot the actors of Tewkesbury Manor Players can be! But that’s the whole point of their hilarious latest production to be staged at The George Watson Memorial Hall in Tewkesbury. Tim Firth’s “The Flint Street Nativity”, directed by Nancy Isaac, is about seven year olds performing a traditional school Nativity, but it is adults who play the pupils! And the lively Manor Players cast have some great characters. After the Company’s previous sell out success of Tim Firth’s play ‘Calender Girls’ this comedy Nativity play has proved extremely popular with everyone involved keeping cast and company in fit’s of laughter during rehearsals. It is an entertaining cast. They manage to make you think they are seven year olds and they each have great stage presence and comedy skills. Musical Wizard Howard Williams helps make it a musical success too as he accompanies the young Nativity players whilst they sing their own versions of Christmas carols, revealing their thoughts on life. Kim Gough plays Jenny, who plays Mary, Jesus’s mum. She is a very fussy, entertaining character, managing to adapt to everything a seven year old has to deal with.
