TWO GREAT DISPLAYS TO LIGHT UP OUR SKIES There's a welcome return for two great Tewkesbury fireworks events this month: Croft Farm’s on Friday 3rd, and the Rotary Club's on Saturday 4th. “Our bonfire and fireworks will be in the Vineyards, right across from the Abbey, on the evening of Saturday 4th November,” said the Tewkesbury Rotary Club Secretary John Halstead. “As well as a roaring bonfire and the firework display, there will be street food and sweets, kids rides, and other stalls. We'll be open for business from 5pm, the Mayor will light the bonfire at 6.30 - and, if the audience gives a loud

Another and fourth outing for Elizabeth Strout's interesting creation Lucy Barton. We are again given an insight into the relationship of Lucy with her first husband, William, who shared a trip back to William's parents origins in "Oh William", a book that has received much praise. Once again Elizabeth Strout has produced a book worthy of much acclaim. It is though a pandemic novel, but not a depressing one as I can think of some which definitely were. This is very readable and enjoyable and whilst we are invited inside the pages to learn more about Lucy and William, we also see more into the lives of their daughters Becka and Chrissy and her husband Michael. William, a retired scientist is immediately alert to the threat of the virus spreading from China and before the pandemic enfolds the population of New York to devastating effect, convinces Lucy that they should up sticks and move to a small community, Crosby, in Maine where he has rented an available coastal property. The arrangements are made through Bob Burgess and he and his wife Margaret are the new arrivals only real initial friends - outsiders, especially from New York are not welcome in this small town; the name of which will be familiar to fans of Elizabeth Strout's books. The weeks, as William had initially indicated to Lucy, as we all now know, turn into months. Bob helps by obtaining Maine number plates for William's car so they are not so obviously interlopers and they establish their routines, settling into a way of life, daily walks etc., which are all enhanced by the setting and as the seasons advance their seaside location. Lucy is still in mourning following the death of her second husband, David. William still has the flaws that caused their first mar-

riage to flounder but they do grow much closer together and the problems in their daughters's lives during the pandemic with them trying to help, reassure, support all at a distance, naturally help create a bond between the couple. There are even interludes where we revisit, in part the theme of "Oh William" and his estranged sister. Elizabeth Strout recycles locations and characters; Olive Kitteridge even making a distant reappearance. Whilst the pandemic is very much the focus and background; other events within America help to establish the time period a year is a long time to be away from home but in that time there was the killing of George Floyd, the Presidential election, followed by the storming of the Capitol; all used to good effect to give depth to the daily lives of Lucy and William, the Burgess family and a few other locals who gradually accept these visitors. This extra insight into the life of Lucy Barton is a pleasure to read; it would not be necessary to have read her earlier stories as the past history of Lucy's life and childhood are covered, but I would suggest a new reader would benefit from savouring the other books; a notion shared by other readers of these later novels. They are all in stock so do come along in.

Valuation Roadshow Success On Sunday 1st October The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway in co-operation with Broadway museum and GWRA Auctions, held a railwayana valuation roadshow event at the Lifford hall Broadway. The valuations were provided by Paul Atterbury of Antique Roadshow fame, as well as Simon Turner and Tony Hoskins from GWRA Auctions. Several stall holders were present selling all sorts of items associated with railways, so that you could purchase those all important artefacts for your own collections. A very mixed selection of items were brought along to be valued, ranging from locomotive nameplates, signals, station signs, locomotive cast numbers, cast iron signs, lamps, clocks, manufacturers plates and even a live steam miniature locomotive. Over 150 people attended the event and thoroughly enjoyed having the items valued and sharing their railway tales and history with those present.

Based at Highfield Business Park, partners Daryll Tanner and Julian Box, have established themselves in the area with their popular ales. Tewkesbury Gold achieved the Premium Pale Ale Award at the recent Postlip Beer Festival and Dark Knight was voted Dark Beer of the festival at the Tamworth Beer Festival. The partners intend to expand the range, over the winter, to six main beers, to include a traditional Bitter, a Mild as well as a New England IPA. out if I need to put my trousers on (instead of shorts). I’m glad I viewed the forecast with a cynical eye and brought the tree ferns and their tender chums under cover, in time for the little frosts we’ve had.

I’m also glad the lawns have slowed down before the leaves drop, sparing me the annual flap over my workload increasing for a short time when I really want to start thinking about other things. I’ve got lots of bulbs to plant again this year – mainly because of some successes with a new garden and last years bulb schemes prompting requests for expansion. I’m going to try planting primula out into places where I don’t think they’ll grow, encouraged by some naturally seeded plants flourishing in odd places this spring. I thought I’d been

clever and got in front of the moss at the end of the summer, but the prolonged summer/autumn (Sum-tum? Autummer?) has given it a second burst, so I’m behind again, like I am every year. My nursery garden has been too successful and now complements a feature area, so I’ll need to find a better hiding place for a new nursery garden. How do I hide a garden?! Then I need to find a way to knit the disparate planting in the current nursery garden together so it doesn’t look like such a jumble sale. It will involve more planting, but I’m loath to buy anything in, on principal. There has been talk of some large projects this winter, but I’m secretly hoping they get postponed. I’ve asked a lot of my team this year and I’d like a steady winter in case next year is challenging. There is a little-visited copse that really needs some attention. I reckon we could get away with having a fire up there which would also involve potatoes and marshmallows. Just don’t tell the boss!

Tewkesbury Choral Sings in the Abbey Tewkesbury Choral Society is performing a concert of music by two of the best loved composers of the eighteenth century - Handel and Haydn - in Tewkesbury Abbey on Saturday 2nd December, beginning at 7.30pm. Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in village on the Austrian/ Hungarian border. He was known as the “Father of the Symphohy”, having composed over 100 with names such as “The Farewell” “The

Clock” and “The Surprise”. He also composed works for choirs, including “Creation” which TCS performed two yeas ago, along with some 14 masses including “The Nelson Mass”, and “The Kettledrum Mass”. The mass included in this programme is Number 7 - “Missa Brevis Sancta Johannis de Deo” also known as “The Little Organ Mass” and composed circa 1775 for an order of monks whose patron saint was St John of God. It is indeed a “little” mass lasting for only

approximately 17 minutes. The “organ” part of the title comes from the Benedictus movement which has an extensive organ part as it accompanies a soprano solo. Georg Frideric Handel, born in Halle, Germany in 1685 settled in England in about 1712. The music Handel produced in his lifetime is vast, ranging from opera, concerti grossi, cantatas, anthems and oratorios. The choir will perform two of his great choral works the Coronation Anthem “The King Shall Rejoice”

written for the coronation of George II in 1727 and sung at the coronation of King Charles III in May of this year. The concert concludes with part of Handel’s most familiar and best loved work “Messiah”. Part One of this giant oratorio is the prophecy and coming of the Messiah, with words mainly from the Book of Isaiah from the Old Testament and the story of the angels’ visit to the shepherds from St Luke’s Gospel. Criminal gangs and major heists at Probus Club

I don’t think members of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have ever had a talk by someone with detailed knowledge of the criminal gangs of London, but when Barry Faulkner came to speak to us on “Major Heists and the geezers what did ‘em,” that is just what we got. Barry was born into a family of petty criminals in South London, but his mother who was a fashion model, was determined that her youngest son should not follow the family career path and enter a world of crime. So Barry became a writer and has used his knowledge of the London crime gangs to create several crime novels. He told us of the notorious crime families, the Kray twins who ran North London and the Richardsons who controlled the south of the River Thames in the 1950’s and sixties. Many people even these days consider the leaders of the gangs of London as “diamond geezers,” lovable rogues who cared for and looked after the local population. Barry told us that nothing could be further from the truth, which was that these individuals were vicious, brutal and merciless to anyone who got in their way. TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW - EVANS, 17 HIGH STREET by John Dixon In the early 20th century, we were spoiled for choice of leather goods, boots and shoes, writes John Dixon.

Mr. Evans served his apprenticeship with Mr Boughton of 83-84 Barton Street - they were both staunch Methodists - and the shoe shop replaced the saddler in 1917. My grandfather was a staunch Methodist, and I can still see him in my mind cobbling boots in his back kitchen in the 1950s. Reader Eddie Robinson, “was inspired to recall his early days seeing Mr Evans in the window, cutting down the full length of a hide of leather which was hung up there, using a hooked knife in one long slicing movement. “My brother recalls that he used to go to Mr

Evans to fetch pieces of leather for our grandfather who used to repair our shoes himself. “So, I recall Mr Evans as a shoemaker - though we lads always used to get our shoes at Frisby's!”. Another contemporary child still remembers a lady, standing at the door attracting customers in the days after Mr. Evans had died – was she the daughter, Edna, who still in 1939 was “helping with the Boot Business?” The 1993 photo shoes the renovated carcass of the medieval building, which was so typical of many main street shops, along with an alley – called Justins Alley in the 1861 census but still in evidence today? Again, we lost shoe shops but gained restaurants - in 1968, perhaps, the first ‘Chinese Restaurant’ was called the Aurora, although today it is the Great Wall which still serves us. I can still remember bravely tasting such a meal in Sheffield in 1956 - I still love that cuisine as I age! But where can I, and Eddie, buy our shoes – and does any grandfather ‘cobble’ today? Celestial Silence Descends: St. Nicholas Church Bells Temporarily Muted for Restoration The 8 bells of St Nicholas Church, Ashchurch will be silent for the next few months. They are being removed and taken to Whites of Appleton near Oxford to be refurbished with new metal headstocks and bearings to which the bells are attached to allow them to swing. There will be other adjustments to make them easier to ring and also the bells will be retuned to improve the quality of the sound. Six of the bells were

originally installed in 1759 and two new bells were added in 2001. They are rung regularly for Sunday services, a weekly practice night, weddings and

just for pleasure as a popular hobby by local ringers and visiting bands of ringers. We are very grateful to a benefactor who is funding this work and to the local volunteers who are assisting with the removal and reinstallation. By Alison Lund.

Overlooked Tewkesbury – Photo Walk Exhibition The weather on Sunday 17th September was dreadful. Torrential rain. So just the day for a photo-walk around the lesser known parts of Tewkesbury. Strangely, 27 people took part, and it was a lot of fun.

The walk was led by Steve Goodchild of Project Alleycat, artist Sam Morris was on hand to help people look at things a bit differently whilst taking photographs. We visited North East Terrace, the Iron Bridge, Lilley’s Alley, the Secret Garden and Old Baptist Chapel Court. Some people knew these places, some didn’t. The walk was sponsored by Tewkesbury HAZ as part of the Heritage Open Days. We received over 200 photographs from participants. Whilst this was Neil’s sixth victory spanning 15 years, it is only the second time in the Captain’s Cup that it has ever been defended successfully, the first was by Colin Pilcher (Teddington Hands) at the dawn of this century. I am sure many of you who read my articles are aware by now of how important I feel knowing what your conditions are and understanding the basic anatomy and physiology behind them.

This is also true to a certain extent to that of your medication. It is our responsibility to understand what our medication has been prescribed for and what is the aim of the treatment. When patients come to see me and they have a few different medications, it is always a concern when people are unsure why they are on mediations. Of course, it is important to take the medications you have been prescribed but make sure you read the insert

which comes with the medicine and ask your pharmacist any questions about it which you may have forgotten to run by your doctor when you were prescribed it.

your yourself off medications, not completing a course or lowering a dose without medical advise. E-Types and Minis in motors and fashion; the space race [Gagarin to Moon landings]; rock music [still going!]; saucy literature [the first DHL!]; trains [cuts] and planes [package hols]; sports [Cassius and Best and WC1966]; politics [Martin Luther King, Churchill’s state funeral] and scandal [Profumo]; entertainment [Butlins, Mecca, Psycho, Woodstock]; motorways and high street cafes [Wimpy, Golden Egg]; ATMs, parking meters and the breathalyser. We remembered it well. Unlike many, they say ... SEVERN UNIT ON DUTY AT EVESHAM BATTLE Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was invited for the second year to again assist at the Evesham Medieval Festival by providing safety cover throughout the weekend. Head of Unit Nic Price said “It was a big undertaking for the unit as we took three cruisers including our training vessel MVS Minerva upto Evesham along with our Rigiflex dinghy. This meant a 7 hour trip through 6 locks to reach Evesham. Despite the inclement weather we patrolled the river throughout the weekend in the area of the living history camps and the arena where the jousting and the re-enactment of the Battle of Evesham took place.” The battle itself took place on 4th August 1265 and marked the defeat of Simon de Montfort and the rebellious barons by the future King Edward 1st and this is England’s largest 13th Century battle re-enactment.

National Award for Bethany Collins A Tewkesbury apprentice has been recognised with an award by national trade body, the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF). Bethany Collins, Acting Assistant Manager at the Tewkesbury branch of Building & Plumbing Supplies Ltd (BPS) was named BMF Apprentice of the Year 2023 Level 3 at the BMF Annual Members Conference and Awards. Former Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster, hosted the event and presented Bethany with the Apprentice of the Year 2023 Level 3 Award, which was sponsored by the Brick Development Association. Bethany has worked at BPS for nine years, initially on Saturdays when she was at school and then during summer and Christmas breaks while at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She embarked on a BMF Apprenticeship Plus programme, provided by LEAP, to enhance her sector-specific skills and lay a solid foundation for a career in building materials supply. Bethany, who graduated with a BA (Hons) and a Masters in Medieval Studies thanked BPS,

which is headquartered in Warwick, for their support through all stages of her education. She said: “BPS supported me throughout my university years and then enticed me into a full-time role with the promise of further education in the form of an apprenticeship. “It’s a brilliant sector to have found a home in and I’m already excited for what the next stage of my development will be. “Winning BMF Level 3 Apprentice of the Year has been the icing on the cake - being recognised for my progress by the BMF and able to celebrate with my colleagues has proved that hard work does pay off and I am so grateful for the recognition of my achievements and the amazing support I received. “It’s so great to have the support of the BMF. I won a £750 voucher towards BMF training with my award - I’ve already spent some of it and got dates for future training in my diary.” Held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, the BMF’s Annual Members Conference and Awards
