A BRIGHT NOVEMBER FOR TEWKESBURY As the festive season swiftly approaches, the Borough of Tewkesbury is gearing up to celebrate in style. With the darker days of last year now firmly behind us, the panto season returns to the Roses Theatre on Saturday 27th November. Maurice Gran (writer of TV’s ‘Birds of a Feather’) and Nick Wilkes bring ‘King Arthur The Panto’ to the town, with group and family discount tickets a cause for extra celebration. Full details can be found on page 26. Lighting up the skies this year, the Rotary Club’s annual bonfire and fireworks display returns to The Vineyards on Saturday 6th November. It will be very traditional, with the bonfire being lit at 6.30pm, followed by fireworks at 7pm, set against the backdrop of the abbey. In the abbey itself, the festival of lights runs from 2nd-5th November, by timed ticket, bookable in advance. For details, see page 51 inside this issue.

This year, a main stage will be erected next to the Cross to broaden the area for people to gather at 5pm when the

This latest novel by one of my favourite authors transports us nostalgically back into the summer of 1968, and as ever William Boyd is pitch perfect on his period settings. The world is enduring the Vietnam War, rioting in Paris, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. The location is Brighton, where a movie is being filmed with a Hollywood star, Anny Viklund, one of the three main characters who make up the "Trio" and whose lives we follow during the months of production. She has an ex-husband who causes her problems with the FBI and the UK police when he absconds from justice in the States, and is deemed to be in Europe. Her new partner is based in Paris, and we witness her involvement with her co-star, Troy a pop singer seeking an alternative career. Talbot Kydd, the film's producer is exArmy, a man with a secret existence which helps him escape from the restrictions of his family life, and his earlier military life and colleagues are part of his back story that the reader is given an overview of. His managerial oversight of the filming is never smooth, and William Boyd's experience of film scripts, and filming comes across with authenticity. The final lead character is Elfrida Wing, a novelist who has not published anything for years, but her writer's block is linked with her love of vodka which she hides from her husband in bottles of white vinegar, Reggie Tipton, the film's director. Oddly he is trying to rename himself Rodrigo, and has his own distractions with Janet, another author who he enlists to help

with script revisions. The storyline follows Elfrida's sad decline with the bottle, her continued attempts to find a subject to write about, and with the location of the filming; Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Set come in as a subplot. There are a milliard of other personalities enhancing the main structure of this novel, providing distractions and detours to the lives of the principal trio. Their lives are the main focus, and they are certainly an odd selection of individuals, all with their own secrets. It is against the making of the film that we experience not only the progress of the planned movie, but the disintegration of their previous semi-artificial existences. Whilst the main part of the book is in and around Brighton and the south coast, there are frequent trips up to London, and then an escapade across to Paris, and beyond. As I read this book it came across as one William Boyd wanted to write about the film industry, with the knowledge he has gained over the years, and he has come up with a complex interlinking set of plots, and the lives of the "Trio," played out against an authentic setting of Britain in the late sixties, will please his legion of readers.Selected by: Ian B. Sarah brings album launch tour to Roses Theatre International singer-songwriter and award-winning guitarist Sarah McQuaid returns to Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre on Tuesday 16th November, when she will be playing songs from her brand new album. Born out of the pandemic and released on Friday October 15th, The St Buryan Sessions is Sarah’s sixth solo album and is probably her most powerful and emotive offering yet. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, she was able to finance a live solo recording in the lovely medieval church of St Buryan, not far from her home in rural West Cornwall. Sensitively captured by her longtime sound engineer and manager, Martin Stansbury, with the aid of ambient microphones placed throughout the church,

Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the death of our Bill Shakespeare The sad day was on 23 October 1971 when he was killed trying to emulate the water speed record of 104 mph, which he had achieved in 1969. The boat was rescued but, to this day, his body has never been recovered and it is commemorated on Lake Windermere by a plaque. Except for Alan Cromwell’s tribute on the wall of the first workshop used by Bill in Red Lane, there is no plaque in Tewkesbury. His triumph is more than speed because he pioneered the manufacture of fibreglass speed boats, which in the late 20th century replaced wood. In his autobiography, Bill credited much of his success to his meticulous training as an apprentice of Bathursts from 1944. From about 1870, this firm manufactured beautiful steamers like the River Queen in 1897 which enabled Sunday School children to visit Worcester or Gloucester by river. The factory is now replaced by the now aptly name “Boathouse” Restaurant. Bathurst’s was adversely affected by

Bathurst’s Factory with River Queen in c1900

is where he built the fibre glass boats which brought him renown and, sadly, his own death. His company, however, survived his death but was closed in 1982 despite having £60k worth of orders. The finance director claimed the firm was “no longer viable” - so at least 27 skilled workers lost their jobs – and Tewkesbury lost its proud boat-building tradition. Enthusiast Richard Nash is rebuilding one of Bill’s boats which we look forward impatiently to seeing. As a town we really ought to commemorate our traditional and successful boat-building history.

Based on the banks of the River Avon in Red Lane, 785 Squadron was founded in 1941 as a detached flight of the local Grammar School. Tewkesbury ATC is the moth northerly unit in the Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing, with parade times on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7.30 until 9.30pm. There are over 40,000 cadets nationwide, who have opportunities to do things other young people may just dream of. Real flight experience, heading out on adventurous training, camps, sports, abseiling, range shooting and engineering projects are all experiences available to cadets. The ATC aims to promote a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force, and provide training which will be useful in the services as well as civilian life. The organisation is also the largest operating authority of the Duke of Edinburgh’s

A fragment of Winchcombe’s celebrated meteorite, which fell on a driveway in the town earlier this year, has now gone on display at the town’s museum. There were many recorded videos and social media posts of a ‘fireball’ in the sky over Cheltenham in February, but it was the Willock family who found the most identifiable part of the space rock, which made a small crater on their driveway. The meteorite has since been studied by scientists, and went on display at London’s Natural History Museum, along with part of the tarmac from where it landed. It is now on display at Winchcombe’s Town Museum, at The Cross, from 10.00am-1.00pm Monday-Friday and 10.00am until 4.00pm on Saturdays.

I must extend my sympathy to all those who suffered from the recent fire at 128 High Street, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. I hope that clients follow Andrews to their temporary home at DF Legal, 63 High Street in a - splendid Georgian building. Witnesses and neighbours, such as I on the next day, were amazed to see a medieval building revealed at right angles to the street. In the edition of June 2018 Steve Goodchild advised us to “look through the upper windows of the nice symmetrical house and you will see that frontage has been added to a grand timber framed building”. You can see from photo 2 that, in Tewkesbury, you can never trust a Georgian façade. The Land Tax Inspector in 1913 agreed: “the front of the house is more recent than back - which is very old”. Steve also pointed out an auction from 1810 of “a very substantial brick-built house opposite the Town

Hall”. The earliest illustration we have is photo 3: a not-very-accurate 1900 advert when it was owned by leading draper, Lemuel Jones. Even the Nottingham Arms next door had its medieval splendour hidden by a Georgian Façade – but the Wheatsheaf had been spared ‘modernisation’. After Jones’s death, it had Ladies Outfitters as tenants, glorying in names - no doubt fondly remembered by readers: Selina, Annette and Bonnie. It will be good to see restored the more prosaic name of Andrews.

New face and new initiatives at Cotswold Riding for the Disabled Cotswold Riding for the Disabled has a new General Manager – Lesley Gorton. Lesley has worked in the charity sector for the last 20 years and has experience in running charities, fundraising, events and latterly in charity retail. CRDA is in a good position at present, this is a testament not only to the hard work put in by Claire Jenkins, the outgoing General Manager, but also the way that the staff, coaches, volunteers, supporters, funders and the trustees have pulled together. We are really excited about the future prospects for Team Cotswold. Cotswold Riding for the Disabled is more than a riding school. We have created a community of people who come together to ride ponies, or to enable others to ride. We know that contact with ponies offers excellent therapy to both young and old, living with any kind of disability. We can see and measure the benefits to those who ride with us, both in terms of physical and mental health and well-being. Not to mention the FUN! However this all comes at a cost, we

We are always looking for innovative ways to raise money and Cotswold Riding for the Disabled will be the first branch to venture into the world of charity retail. Charity retail is a fantastic way to raise funds but also represents the charity on the High St and raises awareness. We already have a shop housed in the Longlevens Co-op. In addition we will be opening a rather special charity shop at 35 High St, Tewkesbury in early December. We will

be focussing on good quality ladies and gentlemen’s clothing with the unique addition of good quality second-hand Equestrian and country clothing. We would be delighted to receive donations, please ring the bell at the rear of the shop (through the alley to the left of the front door) Any charity retail venture is almost entirely reliant on volunteers. BUSY AUTUMN FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS October was a busy month for Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service when they were called out to assist two quite different types of boats. Early in the month they went to the aid of a 55ft narrowboat which was visiting the Avon and was on her return trip to Sharpness when she broke down near Bredon. On one of the wettest afternoons of the year members of the unit located the boat tied to a bush in a field and successfully towed the vessel to a safe mooring at Twyning to await an engineer. A week later the Unit towed a 10 ton classic 1960’s 32ft Rampart Motor Yacht from Tewkesbury to Upton as the boat had engine problems and could not make the journey under her own propulsion. Head of Unit Nic Price said “This was a very involved and difficult tow as we had to manoeuvre the boat under King John’s Bridge then through Avon Lock and 8 members of the Unit took part. Minerva was used as the escort and safety boat for this trip to ensure safe passage from the Avon and up the Severn to Upton Marina.”

CHRISTMAS FAYRE

These will take place in the Vineyards Park on Saturday November 6th, organised by the Rotary Club, and everyone’s invited!

It will be very traditional, with the bonfire being lit at 6.30pm, followed by fireworks at 7pm. No Guy Fawkes effigies on the bonfire, but we might just send some Covid symbols up in flames! There’ll also be food and hot/cold drink stalls, and some gentle rides for younger children. So please come along with your family and enjoy the evening. The fireworks always look spectacular against the backdrop of the 900 year old Abbey, and the view will be even better

this year, as the willow trees along the Swilgate Brook have been trimmed back. If at all possible, please park elsewhere and come on foot, as Gander Lane is narrow, and needs to be reserved for pedestrians and emergency vehicles only. The Vineyards is a public park, so we can’t sell tickets—but please make a donation when you come, as the fireworks need to be paid for, and we’d like to raise a bit of funding for local charities, many of them hard-hit by Covid.

So there’ll be buckets near the entrances for notes and coins (including all those pesky little brown ones). And if you’ve got out of the habit of using money, we’ll have contactless card readers..

NEWTOWN WI We were transported back to the India of the late 1990’s at our October meeting. Peter Berry kept us all enthralled with his photographs of life in Darjeeling from the little steam train that brings all their supplies up the mountain, to the young girls looking very smart in their school uniforms. Owner Chris Warren describes his new opening hours at his Bredons Hardwick Gym. “During the covid lockdown we decided to extend the gym opening times to 24 hours as there was a demand for earlier and later use, for key workers in particular. Some members start using the gym as early as 4am and our later members train up to about 1am. It’s really helped gain extra members who would not normally be able to train outside of the old opening times. Spreading out the usage of the gym makes it less busy at peak times. Tiddesley Wood covers around 200 acres and is believed to date back some 6,000 years. Now in the stewardship of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, the wood has many paths for wandering along - as long as you pay heed to the flags and notices warning you when you are near to the gun firing range! Plans of the paths and information boards are displayed at the woods’ entrances and are also available on the website worcswildlifetrust.co.uk Please note all dogs should be on leads throughout the reserve. Tiddesley is atmospheric and magical at any time of year. This is one of my favourite short walks, suitable for shorter days. Park in the Trust’s car park on the Besford Bridge Road, about half a mile west of Pershore. Leave the car park and join the track (1)

As you enter the wood, keep straight ahead on the main broad track, ignoring the turnings to the left. Forestry work is ongoing here, and the trust is also gradually replacing the conifers with native deciduous trees. The conifers were planted by the Forestry Commission when Tiddesley Wood was used for commercial purposes a few decades ago. Carry on along the path, which rises slightly and eventually meets a bridleway (2).

(3). Leave the bridleway at this point and walk straight ahead along the track. At the next path turn left (4) and keep climbing upwards until you reach cross tracks (5). Bear left here - and at

the next junction bear right (6) down a path which can at times be slippery. At the bottom of the decent you will meet the bridleway again. by a wooden gate (7). Bear left and take the path into the woods here, and follow it until you meet the main track once more (8). Turn right and return to the car park.

Bang, Crash, Whizz - what is pet noise anxiety and what can we do to help?! Firework season is an opportunity to discuss pet noise anxiety Noise Anxiety, also called noise sensitivity, reactivity or phobia, is one of the most common behavioural concerns in dogs, writes Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Vets. Approximately 50% of dogs react fearfully to some noise. Common triggers for noise anxiety are typically sudden or sustained loud noises, such as firework parties, engine noises and building work. Interestingly, what seemingly creates little fear or concerns in one pet can result in fear or phobia in another.

So, advice for a pet that suffers from anxiety during firework season is to praise the pet when they “cope” and try to prevent positively reinforcing (respectfully, ignore!) the fear response when they exhibit fearful behaviour. Our role in this experience for pets is that the bangs and whizzes, really are nothing to worry about. I know of owners who, every firework night play, “ball” with their pets so that the “nasty noise”, becomes a better experience. It is all about trying to get your pet thinking about something else rather than what creates anxiety.

Personally, I have experienced noise anxiety with my old Labrador, Nellie (rest her soul, I miss her terribly!). Nellie was a country dog, happiest picking up pheasants during shooting season and yet would chew her way through a door to get away from the noise of fireworks. Typical signs of anxiety and fear in dogs include panting, trembling, seeking people, hiding or trying to escape (chewing), refusal to eat, inappropriate urination or defecation and facial expression plus body language indicative of stress and fear. Like humans, fear is an emotional response caused by specific stimulus that a pet perceives as a threat or danger. A phobia is altogether a different beast. Phobia is when a fear creates an exaggerated, persistent and irrational fear response which is disproportionate to the level of danger. These phobias typically lead to avoidance behaviour and can develop after a single traumatic event or as a result of repetitions of less severe events.

What can be done for pets with noise anxiety? This is quite a large topic. Available treatment options can be divided into environ-

mental management, behavioural management, food supplements, other remedies and pharmaceutical therapies. In the majority of cases, successful intervention is a combination of measures. Ensuring that pets get to experience a gentle introduction to noise at an early age can reduce the potential anxiety in later life, if introduced with care. As you might expect, those pets that have experienced a slow and gentle introduction to noises are far more able to cope with them at a later age. For those pets that are genuinely petrified of the loud, bangs, pops and whizzes of firework season the good news is that there are some practical advice AND safe medications that can be used to reduce noise anxiety in pets. In my experience, the practical advice helps but medication makes the difference, especially at the early stages of the problem.

Medications to help calm your pet can really make a difference. More effective, requiring a prescription, medications require a consultation, to examine your pet and to discuss and plan to give the most effective, tailored treatment for your pet and their individual needs. Not something to be undertaken without a lot of planning and bit of training, and they chose the Severn from Wales down to Deerhurst. Martin has now published his account of their two trips, entitled "Two Men in a Boat Rowing Two Rivers". This is no ordinary travel story as both are keen historians with a love of architecture, and bridges. Thomas Telford's creations were high on their agenda, as was Fowler's Victoria Bridge carrying the preserved Severn Valley Railway. Whilst the second half of this book is all about their French adventure, the first section, though starting in Wales, sees the intrepid pair sculling, with stop overs, down the Severn. From Shrewsbury, they head south, via Ironbridge, Bewdley, Worcester, Upton until they reach Ripple and Tewkesbury before landing at Deerhurst, for a homage to Dumbleton the book has references to Patrick Leigh Fermor. Throughout both parts of the book, the black and white photographs are predominant-

The senior matted cat If you have a senior cat you may notice that they have started to get matted fur, writes Jo Knight. This is pretty common in older cats. Arthritis often prevents them from being able to reach parts of their body like their back and hips.

Older cats also tend to not be as good at bathing themselves overall. The best way to tackle matted fur is to help prevent it. Helping your cat with their grooming is the easiest prevention. De- shedding them regularly and keeping them fluff free will help. If matts have developed, applying a dry powder shampoo.

Many people think that if something happens to them in the future and they can’t make their own decisions about issues such as finances, property, healthcare or personal care, for example, their family or friends can simply take over. Most weeks at Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club we have an external speaker who entertains and informs us about their own specialist subject. Occasionally one of our own members gives us a presentation which has the added benefit that they give their talk free of charge. John McGhee gave us a varied and indepth presentation on his experience as an exhibitor at the Chelsea Flower show. John is a leading member of the Hardy Plant Society and having exhibited at other prestigious shows including the Three Counties Show at Malvern, John and his team decid-

ed to enter the Chelsea Flower Show in 2017. Never having entered this show before, John wanted to make the stand at the show different from what might be considered the norm for these displays, so he devised and planned an innovative display for the plants which was based on a garden pod designed to rotate to give visitors to the stand a constantly changing view of the plants. The display was built by a local engineering company and the show was a great success with John’s team being presented with a silver-gilt award. He was interviewed by Joe Swift of BBC Gardener’s World and the

video was shown to members as part of his presentation. The following week, well-known local businessman Ian Boskett gave us lots of fascinating and little-known facts about the Great Train Robbery of 1963. Ian surprised everyone when he brought into the meeting a real railway signal similar to those used on the line where the robbery took place,

showing how the gang changed the green signal light to red to stop the train without alerting the railway authorities. He also told us that despite the careful planning by the mastermind of the robbery Bruce Reynolds, the gang made several sometimes stupid mistakes in executing the plan which led to their ultimate capture and conviction. Tewkesbury Rejuvenation Initiative - Update By Tim Wright Love for our town - Last month I wrote about repairing the degradation to our town: So, a big A big ‘THANK YOU’ to all who have helped so far with the clearing up. Around 160 hours have been volunteered by many groups. Take a look at some of our Alleyway; Side streets, St John’s Bridge, the Crescent and many more. You will also see there is still much to do so, if you can join us please ring Karen on 07806762157, or help by weeding an area near your home or place of work. This is only the start and next month I hope to cover plans for shop front facade’s and positive help from the High Street Heritage Action Zone managed by TBC. Grants are available but initiatives have to meet certain criteria to unlock them. YOUR innovative ideas, and any skill you can offer to help TRI/Tewkesbury reach its full potential, would be greatly appreciated: Accounting, legal and admin support will be required to explore the benefits of making Tewkesbury a BID (Business Improvement District), as have Cheltenham and Gloucester

FANTASTIC NEW BATTLE DISPLAY AT THE MUSEUM The pre-pandemic plan in Tewkesbury was to spend 2021 celebrating a big anniversary of the Abbey and commemorating a big anniversary of the Battle. As things happened, May 4th, the battle anniversary, passed by without a fanfare, beaten by the virus. In 1971, the last big anniversary, the Museum unveiled a new battle room display. The centre piece was a magnificent diorama of a key moment in the battle, made of thousands of Airfix model soldiers fixed onto a landscape carefully constructed of chicken wire, paper, sand and shredded nylon pot-scourers. The models were individually adjusted and painted in livery colours. Altogether, a striking and surprisingly dramatic display, most of which has survived fifty years in good condition. The Battlefield Society wanted to do something for the anniversary and a refurbishment of the battle display seemed appropriate. It was agreed with the Museum that they would make a major financial contribution to the cost of the project, and the search started for a volunteer to carry it out. Neither the Battlefield Society nor the Museum anticipated what they had started. Cameron Lawrence volunteered to take the project on, and proposed a dramatically different vision to the ‘things in cases’ approach which is normal in museums. His ideas were agreed and he set to work. Then Covid happened. Access to the building was severely restricted and delay was inevitable. Cameron soldiered on off site, making or acquiring the various components for his vision, with a lot of help from cabinet maker Jenny Burt. The end of lock-down saw more delay with the museum closed again; this time for essential roof repairs. The Watson Hall kindly provided space to store the growing pile of boxes and timber frames. All that frustration is in the past, though. As soon as it was possible to work in the Museum, installation started and the vision is there for all to see. The display is dazzling, and shows Cameron’s skills in

theatrical set design and construction to perfection. The story of the battle is told, step by step, from both the Lancastrian and Yorkist viewpoints, with dramatic backdrops, accentuated by fully costumed models of King Edward and

Queen Margaret. Between them stands the historic diorama of the battle. Now that the Museum is open again, visitor reaction has been very positive indeed. People spend much, much, longer in the room than they

used to and say very complimentary things afterwards. The display has arrived much later than planned for, but that was unavoidable. It has certainly been worth waiting for. It’s a wonderful follow-up to the fairground room, unveiled just before the pandemic, and makes a visit to the museum even more interesting and educational. By Steve Goodchild,

Cotteswold Dairy sponsors teacher, Tom, in training for World Triathalon event GB triathlete Tom Radley hit the roads of Gloucestershire back in August as part of his training for the World Triathlon sprint distance and relay championships. Tom Radley is sponsored by Cotteswold Dairy and made a plan to cycle to a number of their supplying farmers. Cotteswold Dairy started sponsoring the Tewkesbury based School teacher / Triathlete back in 2018. Tom trains with the

Tewkesbury Tri Club and focuses on sprint distance racing and works hard to balance working as a full-time teacher as well as

training in 3 different sports. Tom cycled to 13 farms on the 31st of August in preparation for the championships

in Bermuda. The journey around the farms took him a total of 4.5 hours reaching a total of 85 miles, with a few stops in-between to say hello to the farmers that supply Cotteswold Dairy with great tasting milk! Unfortunately Tom has since been informed that the event in Bermuda has been postponed and will not now take place this year, which is extremely disappointing for him. He has commented to say ‘it’s a real shame as I have hit good form in the last month, winning in the Bournemouth Triathlon and Oulton Park recently’ he had planned to compete in both the individual event and the mixed

team relay - which he said he was ‘really excited for after the Team GB guys and girls won gold in Tokyo’. He has now rearranged his plans and instead will head to Turkey to try a half ironman event, this is

a new challenge for him as it is about 4x as long as a sprint distance race! It is great to see a local sportsman doing so well and we wish him all the best in his upcoming competitions.

Northway schools spring into action ‘Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much’ It’s that time of the year when the Autumn leaves are falling, the nights are getting darker and you start hunkering down for the winter. It is also the time of year when you might decide to start planning spring time flowers for the gardens. Northway Preschool Playgroup, Northway Infants and Carrant Brook Juniors wanted to give something back to the Northway Community who have supported them through the recent lockdowns and add some sunshine to the local area. So, on a recent INSET day, all three settings came together to plant an array of different bulbs around Northway with the ultimate aim of wanting to make people smile! Different locations were selected, staff set to work and hundreds of bulbs were planted. A big thank you to parents, local people in the community and Morrisons for the generous donations of bulbs. She worked 6 days a week until August. She was 85. Joyce started from a barrel but then progressed to a shop and was a legend throughout the area. Her Funeral on the 13th October saw the streets lined as the Hearse stopped outside the shop before progressing to a packed Church.

New gift ideas from Church Street Gifts by Jane Gisborne Church Street Gifts is currently housed in Plantagenet House a stunning Grade II* property in Church Street Tewkesbury. A property that has been dated to 1332 in a recent dendrochronology survey, making it the oldest in town. The support and encouragement of locals and visitors alike provided the confidence boost needed to open in April 2021 with a wider range of gifts as well as handmade items from a few select local makers. The latest news is that Church Street Gifts is now selling small batch distilled Tewkesbury 1471 Gin: In collaboration with a local distillery the recipes created were developed and tested over the summer months and are made using botanicals that were available in the fifteenth Century. The distinguished artist Graham Turner has kindly given permission for his artwork to be used on the labels. Graham is well known

for his military art and in Tewkesbury for his detailed artwork on the Medieval Festival posters: Earlier in the year the Royal Mail issued Wars of the Roses stamps that featured his work. Tewkesbury 1471 Gin has also been bottled with a distinctive clear vinyl label, decorated with images of the town’s timber fronted buildings. Two more recipes make up the current range and include a ‘Winter Knight’ gin, which has slight Christmas notes of plum and clove while the ‘Wars of the Roses’ edition has a rose middle note. For those who prefer a sweeter tipple a wide range of Mead is stocked including the

Christmas spice version. The shop has a range of Christmas items now in stock and includes traditional decorations alongside some more quirky and unusual ones such as the ‘Hipster Santa’ or the ‘Christmas dinner Dome’. Obviously, for this year, gin related

PLANNING AHEAD

Autumn is my favourite time of year in the garden. It is when the garden can have its last tidy, mulch can be put down and all the mistakes or things I’ve missed over the growing season don’t matter any more. It is also when somebody always asks if I wouldn’t mind looking at a certain tree that’s dying, only for me to inform the owner that autumn is here and the tree will ‘come back to life’ in a few months – yes really, every year! Now is the time to start thinking about next year’s plans in the garden. It is natural to leave it until mid-winter when you’re perhaps less busy or doing the less urgent jobs, but you can steal a march by putting your mind to it now. The obvious thing to think about is bulbs, because the planting season for those is underway (but you have plenty of time left). You’ll find spring bulbs for sale everywhere now, although some of the more unusual varieties may have already sold out. Here’s a design tip: use bulbs to tie together beds in the early season that may have different styles

or displays later in the season. The optimum planting season for roses, trees and shrubs will start soon as they are sold as bare root plants, so new architectural elements can be planned and budgeted for and money saved. Herbaceous plants are generally better left until spring so you have plenty of time to plan and change your mind. To amuse yourself for a while yet, remember that some cuttings can still be taken, wildflower seed can be sown and turf can be laid now, hard landscaping elements can be done without vegetation poking you in the eye, spring

EXCITING NEWS FROM TEWKESBURY NATURE RESERVE (TNR) - TNR has just recruited Robyn Kinnersley as its new Learning and Outreach Officer for the ‘Green Lung’ project, funded under DEFRA’s Green Recovery Challenge. Robyn will be designing learning activities for schools, lively outreach activities for adults and a new training programme for volunteers, developing its participation in citizen science projects and working with partners like The John Moore Museum. It is exciting to utilise the reserve as an educational environment that benefits community wellbeing and wildlife in the process.
