YOUNG ARCHIE IS BRITISH CHAMPION Eight year old motorbike enthusiast Archie Gibbs, from Tewkesbury, set out on the road to success last month when he scooped his first British title. Racing a Team Evolution 40cc mini motorbike capable of speeds up to 60mph, Archie became the country’s number one in the Rookie Class of the Coolfab Mini Moto championships. The championship event took place over eight rounds held on various tracks around the country, culminating in the final at Tattershall, Lincolnshire. Archie has been competing in the Mini Moto event for one year, but had previously ridden in

some junior Motocross events. Archie now has his sights set on the Italian CIV and the 2020 FIM European Championships. To help him on his way, Archie’s parents are seeking sponsorship from anyone who would like to help this local youngster with his future sporting career. The tractors ready to rumble

A cavalcade of over forty vintage tractors passed through Tewkesbury last month in aid of Focus - a local charity supporting the Gloucestershire Oncology unit at Cheltenham General Hospital. The event was held in memory of Chris Stagg, a great friend to many who farmed with the family at Tredington and died last Christmas benefitted from the amazing staff at that unit. Over the years the Stagg family has raised well over £100,000 for cancer charity and this event at the last count was looking to top £2000. The run was organised by Katie Mills and family members, with members of the Severnvale Vintage Tractor Club being joined by many other friends for the ride.

by Simon Mawer Paperback, £8.99 I read this book in August last year, very much 50 years after the real events were taking place in that city where Mawer sets his latest thriller. It would be wrong to classify it as espionage, but it does feature diplomats and a few undercover goings on.

We next meet Sam Wareham, a First Secretary at the British Embassy in Prague; he says farewell to his girlfriend Stephanie, who is heading back to the UK in her VW Beetle to look after her parents. Before she seems to have even got home, interestingly her Beetle being spied by James en route, [a nice touch], Sam is involved with a local student Lenka; so we also experience Sam's mixed emotions over two very different romances. These two couples inevitably meet up, as the students' paths lead them to follow a classical cellist, and an

Interspersed with some good diplomatic exchanges with Sam's colleagues, the rest of the plot evolves around Sam's domestic life, and Lenka's friends, some musicians, where they meet up with the rest of the characters who are involved with the main thriller strand of the book. This is all set against the background of Dubcek's attempts at creating a modern Czechoslovakia, stifled when Brezhnev sends in his troops. Russian tanks block the city's streets and the Western diplomats have matters to resolve and the safety of their personnel, and families to protect. Historically very sound, with Czech exchanges flowing easily through the main text this is a good adventure story firmly routed in the real events that took place in 1968. The Moody Blues even make an appearance. Mawer's writing is, as ever, powerful and some of his descriptions especially of the musical performances that nestle throughout this novel brings this book up to a higher quality of storytelling. OBITUARY  Former Avonside Taxi Driver David Arwell Davies sadly passed away recently. Dave is much missed by his loving family, his wife Diane, and his colleagues at Avonside. He worked alongside Di in the business for 22 years. “The banter we all shared in the office will never be the same again,” said Diane.

Dave Davies Born in Carmarthenshire, south Wales, Dave joined the army at the age of 16, rather than go to work in the mines. He served for 17 years as a vehicle specialist, in Belgium,the Falkland islands and at Ashchurch Camp near Tewkesbury. When Dave left the armed forces he worked as an HGV driver for an agency, and later at Oberthur Card Systems.

DAVID ARWEL DAVIES Diane and Dave first met in October 1996, and were married at Tewkesbury Methodist Church in May the following year. Dave obtained a taxi licence and initially worked part-time to help out at Avonside, but as the business grew he gave up his job and became a full-time driver. Over the years he made many friends and carried hundreds of passengers. He also served as a school bus driver, getting to know many pupils from Bredon School over the years. “Dave loved his rugby passionately,”said Di. “We shared a lot of banter - expecially when England played Wales! “In his younger days he played rugby for the Army, and also he Welsh club Pontyberrin. He was nicknamed ‘the ferret’ by his team mates because he was so quick.” “Unfortunately the army and his sport had a big impact on his knees, leading to him needing two replacement joints. “The first operation was on August 31st,

with the second scheduled for January next year. “He was doing really

well with physio therapy and recovery, but sadly didnt have the time to gain freedom from the

pain he had suffered.” Dave leaves three daughters and three step children. Between the

six children, Dave had twenty three grandchildren. He also leaves behind an adoring family in Wales - his sister and her husband, and their three children. Dave is much missed by many.

FROM THE USA TO HISTORIC TEWKESBURY CHAPEL After an extensive tour of the United States, award-winning singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid returns to play at Tewkesbury's Old Baptist Chapel on Friday 29th November. The intimate venue, which was converted into a chapel during the 18th century, will provide a perfect setting for Sarah's relaxed and informal performance style. She is looking forward to returning following a sell-out performance at the chapel in 2018. Honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland (2017), Sarah has also drawn critical praise for her voice and her engaging rapport with audience. With the release of her latest album, If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous, the Madrid-born, Chicagoraised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally. Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour”

Cheltenham’s big turn on is in the Promenade on Saturday 23rd November, after the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future parade though the town. There’s lots going on at the Watson Hall The Watson Hall in Barton Street is well known to the residents of Tewkesbury and many of you may have memories of attending film showings, comedy nights and concerts in years past. Sadly, the Watson Hall hasn’t been as busy in recent years but we’re pleased to report that the hall is now firmly back on the map as a major venue in Tewkesbury. Recent improvements at the hall include upgraded stage electrics, Bluetooth compatible PA system suitable for background music and voice, new app-controlled stage lighting, free Wi-Fi throughout and a revamped, well stocked bar. The Town Council has

recruited an Events Officer, Becky Blockley to market and promote both the Watson Hall and the Town Hall. Recent events have included The D-Day Darlings, The Wurzels, comedy night and themed discos. Future events are planned such as JC Quo in December (featuring the original drummer from Status Quo) and Bon Giovi in April 2020 (UK’s premier Bon Jovi tribute band) with more to be announced soon.

This transformation has by no means been a single-handed task. Deputy Town Mayor, Karen Brennan said: “The recent success of the Watson Hall is all thanks to us having a great team in place, from the booking and invoicing process through to the preparation and maintenance of the hall. We’re really pleased to see the Watson Hall and the Town Hall bookings flourish and this will enable us to expand our programme of events.”

Abbeyfield House at 49, Church Street in Tewkesbury looks like any other house from the outside, and I’d walked past many times without really taking any notice of it, writes Amanda Orton. This week, however, I was lucky enough to go and look round inside. I had a cup of tea with some of the people who live there and they told me all about it. Abbeyfield House was formally opened in October 1971 and provides independent living, with “affordable rents for active older people”. Despite the name and close proximity to the building, Tewkesbury’s Abbeyfield House has no direct links to Tewkesbury Abbey. The Abbeyfield Society was started 70 years ago, by Richard Carr-Gomm and there are now over 400 homes both in the UK and abroad. As our population ages, most people of retirement age manage very well in their own homes, but circumstances can change and leave the elderly feeling lonely (say after the death of a partner) or just struggling to cope on their own. Abbeyfield residents become part of a local family, whose other members are there for you if you’re lonely and want company, but you have your own front door when you want privacy and to “do your own thing”. Tewkesbury’s Abbeyfield House has private bedsitting rooms, all with their own en-suite shower room and a kitchenette, for up to seven residents. I met residents Doreen and Nellie when I went, along with Betty, the housekeeper and Alison, Doreen’s daughter-inlaw. We sat in the spacious and comfortable sun room overlooking the garden at the back of the house. With table lamps on and a radio playing quietly in the background, it felt really homely. Both Doreen and Nellie have lived there for several years and love being there. Doreen moved over from Cheltenham, because she had family nearby in Tewkesbury and Nellie was born and brought up in Kempsey. Alison showed me into the dining room where resi-

Abbeyfield House social event dents sit together for lunch and tea. The ladies gave me a big “thumbs-up” for the lovely food that they are served every day and no more cooking or washing up! There is a committee of volunteers, enabling the rents to be kept low and residents are free from the worry of heating bills, council tax and building repairs. Volunteers organise outings and coffee mornings; meals are cooked by a resident housekeeper and the bathrooms are cleaned every week. They always welcome

new volunteers to help organise activities or outings, so if you have a few hours to spare per month, do get in touch with them. Prospective residents can go there for a three week trial, which is a great way to see if the lifestyle will suit them. The Watson Hall, when a Quaker Temple (circa 1810) The Watson Hall has always seemed to me a form of Tardis, with its insignificant entrance leading into a massive complex of a dance hall with bars and kitchens, writes John Dixon. The gates inform us that it was opened in 1909 to be called the George Watson Memorial Hall, named after an unmarried draper. His family donated the complex to trustees until it was transferred to the then Town Council in 1956 and has since been hired out to the community for multifarious uses. The one redundant function is that of a church - but that was why it was built (together with a burial ground) between 1805 and 1810 for the Society of Friends, a.k.a. the Quakers.

Its size indicates just how important these Friends were. Some, like the Hartlands, were very wealthy tanners but who, nevertheless, lived outside of the law until 1829 because they refused to pay church rates. These important people often had their goods seized to pay their dues. After they were ‘emancipated’, they took their wealth to Cheltenham where the Hartlands bought what is today part of St Edward’s School at Six Ways, Charlton Kings. A cottage in St Mary’s

Lane was converted into a chapel and burial ground where the Quaker founder George Fox preached (illegally!) in 1655.

In addition to the award, 4 members received their Presidents Badges and 2 were awarded their DofE Silver badges, adding to a remarkable 8 Gold awards that have been achieved by 1st Tewkesbury members this year. 45 members took part in the 125 Display with our drummers performing ‘Midnight Drums’ with light up drum sticks and LED glasses creating a spectacular effect in the dimmed light of the venue. Anchors & Juniors performed Baby Shark and Company Section lads competed in the

Canon Run, a replica of the gun carriage competition that used to take place at the Royal Tournament. The new session has also seen us compete in the county 5 a Side tournament, take the Anchors on a day out to All Things Wild and, members collecting £325 for Marie Curie by helping with the recent collection days in Morrisons. Our Seniors will soon be going to North Wales for canoe training as part of their preparation for a Gold DofE expedition in France, whilst a new Bronze group is just

about to start out on their award. These activities are just a small part of a range of great experiences that Boys’ Brigade members have the opportunity to take part in. We take new members from the age of 5 up to 18 and have spaces available in a number of age groups. AFTERNOON TEA CAKES Provided by Birdlip W.I. Ingredients: 2oz sultanas • 2 eggs • 5oz self-raising flour 2oz caster sugar • 2oz butter • A little milk Clean and dry the sultanas. Beat the eggs well. Mix together in flour and sugar. Rub in the butter lightly. Mix in the sultanas, stir in the beaten eggs with sufficient milk to make a smooth dough. Turn onto a floured baking board, roll out 1/2” thick, cut into rounds. Bake in a hot oven for about 15 minutes. Cut the cakes open, butter, sprinkle with sugar and serve hot.

STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas

GRETSCH BOXCAR RESONATOR When Dire Straits featured a gleaming metal guitar on the cover of their hit 1985 album, Brothers in Arms, it heralded a revival of interest in that most singular of instruments – the strange and beautiful contraption known as a resonator, writes Paul Thomas. During the 1920’s, the size of dance bands began to increase as they were augmented by more and more brass and woodwind players. The resulting decibel boost meant that the poor guitarists were all but drowned out. Enter George Beauchamp. In 1925, this mercurial musical promoter and entrepreneur approached the brilliant, New York based, Slovakian luthier, John Dopyera, with a simple request; invent a guitar that could compete with the horns. To Dopyera, the solution seemed obvious. Conical loudspeakers were being developed by telephone, gramophone and radio manufacturers and so, to put it simply, John Dopyera shoved a metal loudspeaker inside the body of a guitar and, much to his satisfaction (and that of George Beauchamp) the guitar was suddenly much louder. By 1927, the two men had formed The National String Instrument Corporation, manufacturing metal-bodied resonator guitars under the brand name National. Their guitars featured three conical aluminium resonators and were dubbed (naturally enough) Tricones. A year later, Dopyera broke away from Beauchamp and started a rival company with his brothers called Dobro (Dopyera Brothers). The resonator guitars built by Dobro featured a single, upturned, aluminium cone, were cheaper to produce and louder than their National counterparts. There were to be many twists and turns in the story of resonators over the coming years but the two main players in the market had been established. National and Dobro. Within a couple of decades, the main advantage of resonators (their volume) had been well and truly superseded by the invention of electric guitars and amplifiers. However, that was not the end of the resonator story. Blues and bluegrass players had loved their capacity to produce eerie slide tones from the beginning and it is in these two areas of music that resonator guitars continue to flourish - as a perfect platform for the slide guitarist. Whether it is in the form of a square-necked, high-action, lap guitar or a more traditionally played round-necked instrument; resonators look set fair to enter their tenth decade as popular as ever - their mournful tones evoking emotions like no other guitar. Apperley’s annual quarter marathon on Sunday 28th September, proved to be a huge success with over four hundred runners taking part. Runners and supporters came from all over the county and enjoyed not only the countryside course but also the superb refreshments, goody bags and unique, handcrafted runners medals, many crafted by K2 Togs in Tewkesbury. Local running groups, including Huccelecote Harriers, Almost Athletics, Kingsway Runners, Tewkesbury Athletic Club and Lonely Goat Club joined individuals and family runners to create a family friendly event, which was raising money for both SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) and Apperley Cricket Club. Anthony Wilkes, Cricket Club Chairman said, ‘It was a massive, community based event. We rely on the goodwill and support of hundreds of local volunteers, landowners and sponsors including Healthcare RM, Cheltenham Fencing and Cotteswold Dairies. The money raised will support an important local charity and help the

PATELLA MISALIGNMENT The patella or kneecap as most people know it, is a sesamoid bone. This is a type of bone which occurs within a tendon and acts with the tendon as a pulley system. This allows forces to be shared out through the tissues. The patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the body. The tendon the patella sits in is called the patella tendon, excellently named! This tendon is a common tendon to four muscles, Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis, Vastus medialis and Vastus intermedius. These muscles are also known as the Quads. If one of these muscles has more ten-

sion through it, it can cause the patella to be pulled one way. This can result in misalignment. When you move the knee, you can hear a click, this is the patella moving back into the grove on the femur where it should reside. The effect of the misalignment not only causes uneven wear of the

Tewkesbury Big Weekend is back! After a well-deserved break in 2019, the organising team are back together and excitedly planning the festivities for 2020. Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend was originally started in 2015 by a small group of Tewkesbury residents that wanted to show the locals and residents of neighbouring towns and villages that Tewkesbury is open for business and to show off what great community spirit we have! It’s the reason we spread activities out around the town, so people can go to places they may not often visit. We are in the process of booking The Vineyards for our notorious dog show. We’re working closely with the Cheltenham Animal Shelter again to make it a truly unforgettable day

for you and your pooches. Forms will be available soon for you to sign up. The much-loved walking parade will pass through the town on the Saturday. We’ve already heard from groups who want to sign up for next year and would love as many sports teams, social groups, schools and nurseries to be involved as possible. Each year it gets better and better, we can’t wait to see what everyone has planned this year. We know how much you’ve enjoyed the activities on the riverside in previous years, so plans are well underway to make this anoth-

Look out for the wonderful boat parade gracing our river showing off their vessels, the opportunity for a peaceful boat ride to see corners of the town you miss on foot, children’s water activities and of course the boat race. This year we hope to have more teams than ever before involved in the boat race. Do you have a work colleagues that might want to take part? How about a family team? You might get a little bit wet, but we promise you’ll have a brilliant time doing it. There’s even a trophy for the winner! For 2020 we will be able to have stalls inside the Town Hall and we can’t wait! We’ve got big plans for it be full of wonderful local crafts, you may even be treated to a demonstration or two. You’ll be able to walk through the town hall into the gardens where further stalls and

entertainment will be waiting for you. We’re talking with some new contributors to find new ways to entertain the town and we hope we’ll be able to share news with you soon. The model had been on show at the Concorde Boarding lounge area of Heathrow Airport and following the demise of the Concorde service in 2003 and subsequent refit was recovered from a skip by one of the painter-decorators who was given permission to take it home. I was fortunate to buy it from the gentleman’s family some years later. I have done some research on her and found one identical

friend resized a 1/72 set of Decals for me which I printed on to transfer sheets. Then came the job of painstakingly attaching dozens of transfers of nut, bolts, door handles, windows, doors, and warning notices all over the model. (I admit she does have one extra door to the standard aircraft but she hasn’t been challenged yet!!) I have produced the Port nside as G-BOAF which is Concorde 216 - the last plane to fly and which is now at Aerospace Bristol and the one we flew to America on in September 2003. The Starboard side is reproduced as G-BBDG which is the fir Production aircraft that is on display at Brooklands Museum now. Firstly we have just released the dates for our much loved Christmas Wreath Making workshops which are 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th of December. These workshops have grown from a few people in our shop to now being run in our local Watson Hall. As well as new people coming along for the first time, we have lots of regulars who come back every year as they see it as the start of their Christmas Festivities, groups of families and friends come to make their very own, unique Christmas Wreath for their door which they proudly display all season. The workshops are run in the evening from 7-9pm they start with a complimentary festive drink and mince pie and then the fun starts, not only making their spruce wreath but then decorating it. Donnington Brewery, the new owners of the Fox and Hounds pub Bredon There is no doubt that Donnington Brewery is one of the Worlds’ most beautiful breweries. Located in a valley near Stow on the Wold, it’s been producing beer since 1865. The Fox and Hounds at Bredon has just been bought by the Brewery, making the estate 18 pubs across the area. Brewery owner Johnny Arkell comments: “The Fox is a fabulous, traditional village pub which has the perfect feel of a

Donnington pub. We are thrilled to have the new Landlord, Lee Martin and his team, who are all from right at the heart of the community.” Voted the ‘Best Small Brewery’ by the Good Beer Guide in 2010, the brewery is still powered by the original mill-

wheel, which drives the pumps and machinery, and the hillside spring gives the beer its unique flavour. It’s still winning awards, and the best sort are local ones, according to Johnny Arkell. “We won ‘Best Beer’ at the Winchcombe Beer and

Steam Spring Weekend, which means a great deal because it’s voted by local drinkers.” The Brewery produces around 10,000 pints a week of its house beers BB (3.6% ABV), SBA (4.4% ABV) Cotswold Gold (4.0% ABV) and Double Donn (4.4%

ABV). The Brewery was founded by Richard Arkell in 1865 and has remained in the Arkell family ever since. James Arkell, Johnny’s father, took over from his cousin Claude Arkell in 2007, after learning the art of brewing from him in the 1970s. Until the

mid 1960s, the brewery grew its own barley and malted it on a special malting floor. Today the Maris Otter malt, which is still milled at the brewery, is bought from growers in Norfolk and hops come from Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Wildcats Go Top! Tewkesbury Town U10s Wildcats played their last two matches on Sunday 6th October in the North League which brought them top of their league. This means that they will now play in the Charity Shield Final either against Gloucester City or Dursley which the play off within the Southern League to see who will come top of their league! Jonny Reeve, the U10s Manager said, “It’s been a privilege to coach these girls over the past few years since they arrived at the Wildcats Centre. They have shown unbelievable team spirit and a willingness to listen and learn since day one. I am very proud of these girls for giving it their all to pull off some remarkable results against some great teams to finish top of the North Leaguethey did this by winning all of their games along the way.” On Sunday 13th they then played their last couple of matches. Firstly, came Dursley they drew this at full time which meant a penalty shoot out was needed unfortunately they lost 2-1. she became the sole heiress who in 1862 wed “the up-and-coming William Evans Hayward, setting the new firm on a firm footing which has lasted to this day.” His son named his own son Richard Brydges and our own ‘Paddy’ Grimshaw was born Mavis Brydges Hayward. She had heard a rumour that the Brydges were indeed descendants of the Duke of Chandos who at one time owned Sudeley Castle although we have yet to prove the link! The Brydges occupied No.3 High Street, Tewkesbury and eventually sold out to the Milner family of ironmongers who took over No. 4 after a sensible marriage to a confectioner. Probus hears about SS Great Britain Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have had some exceptional speakers lately, one of which was Ian Caskie who told us of the history of Brunel’s great ship, the SS Great Britain. SS Great Britain was the second of his three great ships and in the design and building of the vessel, Brunel successfully combined and adapted the very best of 19th century technologies to create the world's first transatlantic liner - a true wonder of the Victorian age.

Brunel was famous for his innovative ideas which he utilised in the design of this great ship. Up until that time, ships had always been made of wood and it must have seemed incredible for someone to suggest that the new ship could be made from iron, because everyone

knew that iron didn’t float. But wooden ships needed huge wooden structures to give them strength whereas the iron hull was able to have the equivalent strength in a hull that was much thinner and lighter. So Brunel’s design created the first oceangoing steamship with six masts, an iron hull and driven by a propeller. This extraordinary ship, launched in 1843 as the largest and fastest afloat, transformed shipbuilding and sea travel for ever. The ship has had a chequered history. In 1846 she ran aground near Ireland after a navigation error. After being repaired in 1852, for a number of years she was used to convey many thousands of people emigrating to Australia, but in 1884 she was taken to the Falkland Islands where she came to an ignominious end

being sunk and scuttled in 1937. Ian described the salvage of the ship and how Sir Jack Hayward, Chairman of Wolves Football Club financed the raising of the ship and its journey from the Falklands across the Atlantic back home to Bristol Docks where she had been built more than 100 years ago. Our members really enjoyed Ian’s talk, not just for the vast amount of historical information about the SS Great Britain, but for his infectious and passionate enthusiasm for the subject. Tewkesbury Fair Society unveiled a plaque commemorating Tewkesbury’s Charter Fairs The Tewkesbury Fair Society has been working for 4 years behind the scenes with the Civic Society, the Abbey and Fisher German to get the plaque on a wall in the town crescent, the spot where the first fair charter was given by King John in 1199. The plaque was unveiled by Geoff Pope and Peter Aldridge in front of the Town Mayor and dignitary's from surrounding borough’s after a short speech about the history of the Mop Fair and the roll in safeguarding the Mop Fair that the Tewkesbury Fair Society has taken on over the last 30 years by Chairman of the Society Steve Perry. Tewkesbury Fair Society would like to give a big thank you to Mikey Jones, Geoff Pope & David Fellows for their time and effort in achieving our aim in getting the plaque erected for our town. MITTON W.I. It was with a certain amount of scepticism that we gathered for the October meeting. Ghosthunters – really!? Yes Jo and Trevor are Ghosthunters. Nearly every weekend they are out with a group somewhere hoping to make contact with the spirits. They told us about their experiences in Gloucester Prison where they were able to record the voice of a former in-mate (who was less than friendly, apparently). Their 'hunts' have also taken them to The Black Bear and Tewkesbury Town Hall. We were also shown pictures taken at other places visited - there is much they cannot explain. They also brought along some of the equipment they use when out on these jaunts and explained how they are used. Sceptics aside, it was very interesting to hear of the unexplained experiences of some of our members! And considering this was the first time Jo and Trevor had actually spoken to a group like this, they coped very well with the questions at the end. Many thanks to them. Do we now believe, and would any of us accompany them on one of their hunts? Watch this space! Next month is our AGM and paper bead making, so bring along any kind of paper and some clear nail varnish. December’s meeting will be our Christmas Party. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

TWO DELIGHTFUL VILLAGES Tucked away on the fringe of the Cotswolds AONB, the villages of Dumbleton and Wormington are a delight to explore - well away from the usual tourist trail, writes Jack B. Walker. Park with care in the centre of Dumbleton, near the church and entrance to Dumbleton Hall (now an hotel). Cross the stile in the hedge next to Nutmeadow House. Do not join the Winchcombe Way, but take the path on the left which follows the boundary fence of the house, and keep walking along the same line across the field to a gap in a hedge, where you meet a track coming down from Leyfield

Farm (1). Go through the gap and bear left. Do not take the path across the field, but walk down its edge keeping the hedge on your left. Ignore other paths and keep walking until you reach the busy B4078 (2). Go through the gate and cross over to Mill Cottages, which are opposite. Bear slightly left and look for the drive next to the cottages. Go through the gate and walk down the long drive until you

reach Mill Farm (3). This was the former home of the celebrated travel writer and war hero Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor - whose wife Joan was of the Monsell family from Dumbleton Hall. Carry on ahead with Mill House on your right and bear down the slope towards farm buildings. Bear right and walk past the old mill on the river Isbourne (to your right) to join the Isbourne Way (4). The mill was built from Dumbleton Brick: a brickworks was established near the village during the 1850s to provide building materials for Dumbleton Estate. Turn left and follow the path across the fields until you meet a lane (5). Go right and walk along the road, over the Isbourne and up the slope into Wormington Village. In Wormington, look for the tiny church on the left (6). Take the drive into the farmyard to the left of the church, and follow the yellow arrows. At the last barn, turn left behind it (leaving the Isbourne Way)(7). Walk down the field and over a stile, carry on down, cross over a bridge, walk up the field on the other side, until you meet the track leading to College Farm (8). Turn left and walk back to the lane. Cross over and go through the gate, following the public footpath sign, down a track which leads back

to Mill House. (Note: on some maps this track is not marked as a public right of way). Retrace your steps back to Dumbleton.
