played in fields, horses and traps were the only traffic and a neighbour grew tomatoes - still a rare sight in the early part of the twentieth century. It was an exciting time when the circus came to town, and the young Hilda was amazed to see an elephant on the streets of rural Gloucestershire! Hilda’s mother had aspirations for her to become a cook, but it was not for her and instead she became third house maid at Southam De La Bere. Later on, she was to work for a retired ambassador to India and also for the aunt and uncle of the celebrated actress, Dame Peggy Ashcroft. Hilda met her husband to be, Cyril, a soldier, while in service and they married in 1931.

PORT TOUR FOR SEVERN UNIT VOLUNTEERS Eight members of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service visited the Emergency Marine Centre at Avonmouth recently, where they met Jerry Stanford who is the Haven Master of Bristol Port. Head of Unit Nic Price said: “The unit was given a presentation on the work of the Port of Bristol, which can be traced back to even before the thirteenth century. “The interesting visit was especially valuable to our newer members, who were shown around some of the port's new installations. “They also visited the site of the proposed new container berth, which is to be constructed out in the Severn Estuary to allow much larger vessels to unload their cargo without passing through the lock.” The Haven Master thanked unit members for the valuable work they do at the emergency centre and in checking the navigation marks throughout the year. Nearer home, the Tewkesbury-based unit has been out and about on the Avon with members continuing their afloat training. They assisted the Avon Navigation Trust when volunteers went up to Strensham to cut overhanging branches away from the lock entrance.

Until recently, the Old Post Office in Overbury was home to a computer technology specialist. It has recently become vacant after its occupants relocated to nearby offices on Overbury Estate, which also owns the former stores. Estate Manager Alex Milne is seeking the opinions of local residents and businesses as to how the building could best serve the local area. “We already have two village shops and post offices within two miles of Overbury, so it is probably not viable for the Old Post Office to operate as a retail outlet,” said Alex. “We are listening to all sorts of ideas and are willing to support any enterprise which could provide a focal point for the community.” The historic building was converted from a house in 1879, by the celebrated Arts and Crafts architect Norman Shaw,

who remodelled many of the cottages on Overbury Estate. It served as the local post office for many years and was still operating as a stores as recently as 1998. The property is quite extensive: almost 1600 square feet over two storeys. In the past the upper floors were used as living accommodation by the shopkeepers and their families. There is a good sized enclosed paved garden to the rear, and park-
ing in an adjacent yard for up to twelve cars. “Hopefully we can attract some sort of arts or cultural project - but we would not rule out a commercial venture if someone puts forward an interesting scheme,” said Alex. The Grade II listed property was extended to its present layout in 1905 by Ernest Newton, and retains much of the character of this period. Despite its idyllic location, Overbury boasts broadband links and is within seven miles of Tewkesbury. A number of businesses already operate from converted

GARDENING with Ernest Bratt
A GARDEN WITH OUTDOOR ROOMS A recent tour with the Head Gardener at Hidcote Manor brought the whole garden alive, writes garden designer, Ernest Bratt. Created by Lawrence Johnston, Hidcote is an Arts and Crafts masterpiece and consists of a series of outdoor rooms, each with its own character. This technique is still very much in use by garden designers today and one that can be applied to any garden. Nearest the house the garden is formal and complements the rectangular lines of the house. However, as one moves further away the style at Hidcote becomes more informal yet still has good underlying structure. Further still one moves into an arboretum, which draws the eye into the landscape beyond (the so called ‘borrowed landscape’). Perspective is used to great effect in the long walk with the width at the end nearest the house being some 3m wider than the other end emphasising the vista into the field beyond. The garden is divided into 28 separate rooms

with 1.5 miles of hedges, which take some six months to cut. A clever water harvesting system stores some 50,000 gallons of water to irrigate the plants. Some 18000-tulip bulbs are planted each year.
The garden is itself Grade 1 listed, which makes the job of the head gardener a challenge to find replacement plants in this historic setting as inevitably plant succumb to old age and disease. An area of the garden is planted with acid loving plants in this otherwise alkaline/neutral pH soil, which makes maintaining the right acidity a challenge if the use of peat is to be avoided. Here an excellent composting regime assists
with copious quantities of leaf mulch available. Within your own garden the underlying principles at Hidcote can be applied. Always work with the shape of your house nearest to it and relax the style the further you move away. Dividing up the plot into areas each with its own character can be visually appealing and provide interest. Then of course the planting can soften any hard edges, provide vertical accent and interest, with splashes of colour against foliage of different texture. Most of the walks we have featured in Tewkesbury Direct to date have been fairly short and suitable for families, writes Jack B. Walker. A few readers have asked if I can suggest any slightly longer routes for ‘a good stride out’ without tackling unduly tough terrain. Hopefully this month’s ramble fits the bill. The two rickety stiles in place here may be on their last legs by now! After passing the pit, bear slightly left and follow the path back towards Aston across the field (Y). RAISING A CUP FOR CHARITY Over £220 was raised for MacMillan Nurses at a special coffee morning organised at Tewkesbury Abbey last month. The event ‘Help Create A Big Stir’ was one of hundreds held all over the county in aid of the charity. Walkers also set out from the Abbey on a sponsored route to Gloucester Cathedral, for Christian Aid. A total of £470 was raised. During 2011 it has been estimated that about 25% of people in this country visiting their doctors mentioned being overstressed. No doubt there are many other who did not go to their GP who could equally have said the same thing of themselves, writes local therapist David Slater. Are you feeling stressed? Well here are some very simple stress busting ideas that you may like to try. 1. Have a biscuit. Just the one not the whole packet! Or try a piece of fruit. Eating something that you really like as a treat in the middle of it all can give you temporary relief from stress and actually import a feeling of calm into your life. A biscuit or a square of chocolate may actually help your brain to release endorphins which are the feel good chemicals that we need to keep calm. 2. Have a short snooze or power nap. Lunchtime is ideal for this. 15 - 20 minutes is enough to
calm you down and recharge those run down batteries. A snooze will have the effect of lowering blood pressure which makes you feel more relaxed anyway. 3. Open the door or the window and let a change of air enter both your home or work space and your lungs ! This can be invigorating and literally blow away the cobwebs of despond. 4. Have the facility to be able to sniff an essential oil such as lavender, ylang ylang, jasmine, chamomile, rose. These could be in the form of oil in a dispenser, a massage oil, an incense stick, a fragrant candle. Allow access to the fragrance for long enough to feel calmer. I wouldn’t recommend it present all the time. 5. Stretch your limbs every ten minutes or so. Circle your head and neck, especially if you are often hunched over a computer or work desk 6. Try out different sorts
of music and see which one does it for you. Have it on quietly in the background rather than loud and distracting. 7. Try and take an activity break at some stage - a brisk walk, cycle machine or whatever you wish will, just like the biscuits above, help to produce endorphins and also will lower your blood pressure so inducing calm. 8. Be aware that what you wear And the environment in which you are can affect your stress levels. Green and blue are acknowledged to be calming. 9. Set aside time to listen to a relaxing CD. 10. Learn how to use EFT (tapping). This is an incredible self-help tool that it is safe to use for men and women of all ages and conditions. 11. Lay off the coffee and caffeine laden drinks. as they will simply increase feelings of stress rather than boost calm. A glass of cool fresh water is by far preferable. 12. Just close your eyes for a few moments and breathe in to the count of four, hold for four and then breath out for six. Do this half a dozen times. David Slater

It’s not widely known that the Christmas lights display in the town is organised every year by only a handful of volunteers at the Chamber of Commerce (the oldest of whom is 75!) writes Shelby Powell. The Christmas lights and the associate costs such as insurance, replacement light bulbs and electrical contractor fees amount to over £10,000 so fundraising always takes takes top priority. This year the Chamber has managed to secure two grants from the Town Council and Gloucestershire Market Towns Forum. Several generous donations from businesses and organisations in the town have also arrived, including Severn Vale Housing Society and from one of the largest employers locally, Oberthur Technologies. Chamber members were also delighted to receive £350 from the Tewkesbury branch of the Federation of Small Businesses and an offer of

Busy in the run-up to Christmas? Then try this quick and tasty Thai Chicken Curry recipe, supplied by Nicki Halford from Halford’s Butchers.

Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: 2LB / 900g diced chicken (white or dark meat, either is fine, skin on or off also optional). 7oz / 200g chopped button mushrooms (I like to sometimes use an ouster mushroom and just with your fingers pull them apart into pieces). Thai curry paste green or red - whichever spices you prefer, and follow instructions as to the amount to use. Generally a couple of teaspoons 400ml tin coconut milk 200ml double cream Olive oil
Salt & pepper to taste METHOD: 1. Heat a little of the olive in a pan. Once hot add the chicken and start to brown. After a couple of minutes add the mushrooms, you may need a little more oil
at this point if the chicken is skinless.
and allow to come to a simmer for 5 mins.
2. When the chicken is basically cooked through add the curry paste and allow to fry off for a moment while coating the chicken.
4. Serve with rice (follow rice instructions) and naan bread straight away - and enjoy!

Dental health is a vital, and is often one of the overlooked aspects of pet care. Having a healthy mouth is very important in maintaining a healthy body too! Oral disease begins with a build up of bacteria in the pets mouth, and not only affects your pets teeth and gums, but this unhealthy bacterial load within the mouth can contribute to other serious medical problems such as heart and kidney disease, diabetes and strokes.
Periodontal Disease Bacteria, combined with saliva and food debris can cause plaque which accumulates on the teeth – left in place more bacteria stick to this plaque and calcium salt deposited from the saliva turn plaque to tartar. Bacterial plaque is the most important factor in the development of periodontal disease. The periodontal tissues are responsible for holding the teeth in place and forming a tight gum seal. The bacteria and their by products, as well as the bodies immune response damage this vital tissue, leading to oral pain, dysfunction and tooth loss. The inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease may damage other organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys, as the bacterial toxins travel through the blood stream.
Signs to look out for Bad breath, a change in eating habits, depression, as well as pawing/rubbing at the mouth can all be signs of discomfort in the mouth. If your pet shows any of these signs, or you are at all concerned, phone or pop in to see us. Making sure your pet visits the vet every year for their annual booster vaccination allows us to perform a thorough examination and keep a watch on their dental health.
Whilst out delivering Tewkesbury Direct, paper boy Gregory Wigg noticed what he thought was a small hummingbird darting around and hovering over a lavender bush in Tewkesbury. “It was really weird,” said Gregory. “Humming birds live in hot countries, but this critter was in Ashchurch. It was tiny - only about 3cm long.” After research on the internet, it transpired the insect was a hummingbird hawk moth, which had flown north due to our ‘Indian’ summer. The hummingbird hawk moth has evolved with markings and behaviour similar to a real hummingbird. Nationally rare, moths like these have been spotted elsewhere and a campaign to record sightings has been started. They are not the only unusual visitors seen in the region this year. Hoopoes, birds normally associated with the Mediterranean and North Africa, have been recorded in South Worcestershire gardens during the summer.

JUMP LEADS AND EXPLODING FLAT BATTERIES Sound familiar – no? Then read on, because this could easily happen to you! With winter approaching, some of us are going to come out in the morning to find the car won’t start, writes Anthony Stockman. A pain we know, but then most people, somewhere, own a set of ‘jump leads’the universal cure to getting you on your way. So, with both bonnets open and the donor car running, you connect battery to battery – and as you clamp the final terminal – BANG! – Has someone let a shot gun off in your ear? ‘Fraid not – your battery’s just disintegrated and there’s acid everywhere, including over you! If you’re wearing anything cotton or woollen, the acid’s already sealed their fate; even when washed, they will simply fall to bits. Not a good result. So what did you do wrong? Well, never connect both leads to both batteries, that’s what. Why not? Ok – As a battery discharges, it gives off hydrogen as part of the electrolytic process. These days, most batteries are ‘sealed’ – well sort of. The problem is that they all have a vent tube to allow this process to go ahead without increasing pressure on the battery case, which not only allows hydrogen to escape, but also air to enter and this builds up an explosive mixture inside the battery. On a cold day in still air, the risk of explosion isa real danger if a naked light or a spark is present. So when you connect battery to battery, the final connection inevitably produces a series of sparks – exactly where you don’t want them and bingo! The big bang and your battery’s no more. What to do then; connect the positive (red) lead to each battery, but connect the negative (black) to any metal part of the engine in each car,

i.e: alternator bracket, engine lifting eye, cylinder head or even the exhaust pipe. You can also connect to the body, but that’s not as direct and some cars have a power take-off on the engine somewhere, usually marked with a large red cross. NEW TREATMENT FOR VERUCCAE Tewkesbury chiropodist and podiatrist Lorraine Monck is now offering a new treatment for veruccae at her Nelson Street practice. “Verrucae are a viral infection and notoriously difficult to get rid of, said Lorraine. “Treatments consist of anything from application of acids to burning them. We are now offering cryotherapy treatment, which will consist of three short appointments - one a week for three weeks. “During this time the verruca will be debrided and then frozen. “Although the cure is not guaranteed many patients’ verrucae react favourably to this treatment. 9 into 1 does go - with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society I wonder how many people stand and reflect before the compact semi-detached houses at the beginning of the Bredon Road? They were, however, built on the one and a half acre plot which hosted North House from 1840 to 1931. Designed by the same architect as Pull Court (now Bredon School), it was the ostentatious home of Tewkesbury solicitors such as Samuel Philpot Brookes and surgeons such as F. J. Prior and Dr. Devereux, who was the last owner from 1884 to 1931. Barbara Cartland and her mother were staying at the house in 1918 when they learned of her father’s tragic death but, in 1919, came happier times with the wedding photograph in 1919 of Dr Devereux’s daughter. In 1901 there were five servants; son it was the family of William Sprackling who fulfilled most rolls. He was the gardener then chauffeur; when Dr Devereux acquired a car, William became his chauffeur and was one of the first people in Tewkesbury to hold a driving licence. His wife Emma was cook, daughter Emily was a maid and the father was succeeded by his son as chauffeur. When Dr Devereux retired in 1931 this "Gothic" house was put up for sale, along with “10 bedrooms; tennis lawn, chauffeur's accommodation etc.” By World War II the typical pre-war ‘semis’ had been built to provide homes for far more families, although the removal of the House left a rather unsightly aspect of the modern solicitors’ office in the High Street. Athletes and fun runners turned out in force last month for the annual Ripple fundraiser for Cancer Research. Entrants either ran or walked a 2.2 circular route around the villages of Uckinghall and Ripple, starting and finishing at the Railway Inn. All who took part wore pink as a symbol of their support for Cancer Research UK's ‘join the fight for women’s survival campaign.’ Cancer Research UK has spent nearly ÂŁ44 million on breast cancer research in the last year. The Ripple fun runners sponsorship will add much needed funds to further the good work of the organisation.
