ALL SET FOR FABULOUS FAMILY EVENTS The final plans are complete for Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend, which takes place on the weekend of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May. The line-up looks to be the best yet, with a huge variety of things to do. “On Saturday we will have the ever popular dog show at the Vineyards,” said organiser Carol Crilly. “If you have a dog we have a class for your special pooch! “There is a Craft Fayre in the Town Hall and further attractions in the gardens. The Ukulele band will be about town adding some music to the festivities. “Visit the ‘Stitch Story’ in The George Watson Hall from 10am. The action in town finishes with the street parade at 3.30pm. “The river-side activities next to Healings Mill will be on throughout the weekend. “We have children’s attractions, stalls, and SUP (stand up paddleboard) taster sessions. The Riverside stage has acts starting at 1.00pm and going through to 9.00pm on Saturday, as

well as a bar and food stall. “On Sunday the focus comes to the river with a Boat Parade at midday and Katakanu races starting at 2.30pm. Tewkesbury Festival
Later in the Summer Tewkesbury Festival returns to the Boathouse. The popular riverside venue hosted its first music festival
last August, and after such a fabulous response from local people, the organisers have scheduled a second event this year (Sat 27th/Sun 28th August). Tickets are available at www.tewkesburyfestival.co.uk Railway enthusiasts have a treat in store in June, when the Cotswold Festival of Steam returns to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. ‘Somerset and Dorset Remembered’-themed event will be taking place at Toddington between Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th June. Guest locomotives (including Black Prince) will join residents, with a total of nine engines expected to be in steam, working an intensive timetable over the 14 mile line. The Sweetness Of Water by Nathan Harris Paperback £8.99 Set as the American Civil War is in its closing stages in a town called Old Ox, in Georgia; the story is based on the relationship of local resident, and landowner George Walker, and his wife Isabelle and the bond they build with brothers Landry and Prentiss, newly freed slaves from their neighbour's plantation. George meets them hiding in his woods soon after he has learnt of his only son's supposed death in the war, this devastating news conveyed to him by Austen Webler. The two lads grew up together and being best friends enlisted in the same unit of the losing Confederate side, though, supposedly in a protected posting, due to Austen's father's wealth and influence. George takes his time to tell Isabelle about their loss, something she will naturally hold against him; but their separate sorrows are more than compensated for by their son, Caleb's safe return, which leaves questions to be asked of Austen, and the relationship between the two boyhood friends.

Meanwhile George has created a bond with Landry, who is basically mute, and Prentiss, and they have moved in to the barn on the farm and are helping George to create a peanut plantation. For a man who has never bothered to cultivate his land, but lives off his inheritance, this is a new experience. However, though this venture was started as a way to overcome the loss of his only child, when Caleb returns, he also becomes a willing hand in this enterprise. Both George and Isabelle have their own close friends, Mildred, a strong minded widow, and for George, Ezra, his father's old friend, and confidante and adviser. Both characters have their special roles in the unfolding story, and the support they provide.

Meanwhile the relationship after the war between the two friends Austen and Caleb provides the second strand to the story-line; Caleb's father Wade pushing his son forward into the family business, and a suitable wedding with all the right connections. Caleb tainted by his working with the brothers on his father's farm. These strands provide a tinderbox which explodes and drives the characters and events forward so that each of the main players discover new things about themselves, and their loved ones. This novel nominated for various awards including the Booker prize 2021, is another story about slavery, but in this instance what can happen to freed men and women. The historical setting so soon after the end of hostilities is well presented, and having read and enjoyed several novels over the last few years with a theme around slavery this is a good addition to this oeuvre. A NEW PILGRIMAGE WALK FROM TEWKESBURY ABBEY Tredington and Stoke Orchard Parochial Church Council has unveiled a new triangular way-marked ‘Pilgrimage Walk,’ to mark the restoration of the wall paintings in St James’ Church, Stoke Orchard. Starting from Tewkesbury Abbey, the route is split into three definite sections, which may be walked individually or together. Researched and devised by local rambling writer Guy Vowles, a leaflet and map is available from the historic churches en route Stoke Orchard, Tredington and Deerhurst - as well as the Abbey itself. The route is waymarked with signs of a shell, the emblem of St James, to whom the ancient church at Stoke Orchard is dedicated. The medieval wall paintings in the church
times, after being covered by whitewash for centuries. Painstaking restoration was finally completed in 2020, but
the walk’s launch was delayed by the pandemic. St John The Baptist at Tredington, Deerhurst Priory’s Saxon church,
Odda’s Chapel (English Heritage) are also highlights of the walk, which takes in quiet countryside and part of the
Severn Way. Leaflets are free, but donations to church funds on collection are most welcome.

FUNDING FOR JUBILEE PARTY Bookworm Bookshop has been awarded a grant from the Arts Council’s ‘Let’s Create Jubilee Fund’ by Gloucestershire Community Foundation – ensuring that creativity plays an important role in local community celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The ‘Let’s Create Jubilee Fund’ will ensure that thousands of people from communities all across England will have the opportunity to take part in creative events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. From puppetry and story creation, through to making crowns, carnival and art trails, there will be a huge range of exciting activities for people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved in. In Tewkesbury volunteers from Bookworm community bookshop are organising a Bank Holiday vintage jubilee party in the town centre to enable people to get together for a fun and nostalgic celebration with traditional activities on offer. The event is taking place on Saturday 4th June from 11.00 am and will be based in the large hall and grounds of the Baptist Church in Station Road, within walking distance of the middle of Tewkesbury. There will be a 1950s holiday camp feel with Hi-de-Hi Yellow Coats greeting visitors, who can try their hand at tra-

There will also be homemade cake and tea on offer in the vintage tearoom, and traditional beach chairs in which to enjoy an ice-cream after vintage shopping. There is non-stop entertainment planned including live music from Anne Rayleen, a contestant from the 2022 ITV talent show Starstruck, who will performing popular music from the 1960s; watch out for an energetic ballroom dance showcase, and other nostalgic live entertainment too. The Hi-de-Hi Yellow Coats (courtesy of
Tewkesbury Manor Players) will also be on hand for holiday laughs, re-creating the popular 1980s hit comedy BBC TV series, set between 1950s and 1960s, when families flocked to holiday camps before foreign package holiday were available. This is all made possible thanks to National Lottery players and administered by UK Community Foundations on behalf of the Arts Council. The Let’s Create Jubilee Fund will support a huge range of projects throughout England. “We noticed there was nothing planned in Tewkesbury town centre for local people to come together to celebrate the Queen’s platinum Jubilee. We decided on a nostalgic vintage event to share the best bits of the various decades of the Queen’s reign to celebrate such an important milestone”, said Karen Brennan, manager of Bookworm bookshop. The programme of entertainment and details of attractions will shortly be made available on Tewkesbury Vintage Fair’s Facebook page.

Beckford Jubilee Open Village This popular village event returns this summer with a special weekend of open gardens, attractions and Platinum Jubilee celebrations. On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of June there will be thirteen beautiful and very different gardens to explore. Refreshments served will include afternoon teas with homemade cakes, a champagne bar, barbecue on Saturday, hog roast on Sunday and ice creams. The historic church will be splendidly decorated with flower displays. Take a while to admire the unique Norman nave and carvings, and see the working scale model of the whole church reproduced in fine detail. Wander around the pretty Beckford Nature Reserve with its lake and bird hides where you can enjoy the tranquillity and wildlife. Other highlights include a quiz trail for children, plant sales, classic cars, vintage radio display, locally made artisan glassware, preserves
stall, tombola, raffle and more! The gardens and attractions are open from 1-5pm each day. Admission is £5 (U16 free) which covers all gardens over both days. Dogs on leads welcome. Kemerton Celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Plans are well advanced for Kemerton’s celebrations of this auspicious occasion on Saturday 4th June. The party will begin with a ‘Spot the Corgi’ treasure hunt for village children (and their parents!). The route will take them round upper and lower Kemerton, spotting the corgis and ticking off and recording the names of all the Queen’s corgis. All prize corgis have been kindly knitted by members and friends of Kemerton WI. Between 3.30 –
5.30pm, a Jubilee tea fit for the Queen will be served at the newly refurbished village hall and villagers are invited to dress for the occasion by wearing a special Jubilee hat. To round off the day, there will be an evening of traditional family games and races plus a barbeque. This will be held on the field behind the village hall (by kind permission of Mr George Workman and his fami-
ly). Thanks also to Lee from The Crown for providing the barbecue. The village of Kemerton has a great community spirit and the day should be a lot of fun for all concerned.

One big attraction to boys in that era was a magazine called The Eagle and one of our members, Chris Brown gave an illustrated talk all about what he called “The thinking-boy’s Magazine.” Chris drew a distinction between the typical comics of the time notably the Dandy and the Beano compared to The Eagle. The quality of printing and paper of the Eagle were so superior as were the wide variety and quality of the articles and the strip cartoons including of course Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future which many people remember even today. Still on the publishing theme, we invited Alison Harris, a renowned and experienced journalist and newspaper editor to give us an insight into her long and varied experience in the industry. Alison was probably the first female editor in the UK in the days when women did the horoscopes, were agony aunts or just wrote the women’s page. She told us many fascinating stories including some about the famous peo-
ple she has interviewed and several of the funny typographical errors and quirky headlines she has encountered. Now retired from mainstream journalism, Alison edits the national
quarterly Probus Magazine which has been temporarily withdrawn during the pandemic but which she hopes will reappear later this year. Closer to home, Mike Lovatt gave us a talk about the restoration of the old Cotswold water mill at Stanway. Mike described the challenges and complications of the restoration and the bureaucracy to be overcome before the Mill could be completed and formally opened by Prince Charles. As
a follow up to this talk, we are planning a members’ visit to the Mill in August. Although going turboperma may be impractical for some, there are probably some principles that most of us can adopt. The garden that I manage is pretty formal, but I’ve managed to sneak some permacultural practices in, some without anyone noticing. The reason permaculture seems relevant today is because not only is it the time of year when the first steps of veg growing are underway, but also because food prices are going up and I can’t believe I’m
the only one looking to save money. We’re going to try to replicate the layers of vegetation found in nature. Small productive trees like fruit, nuts, Szechuan pepper, sumac etc can be our canopy. The understorey/shrub layer can be soft fruits, cordon/dwarf fruit or bigger crops like globe artichoke. The herbaceous layer is easy – lettuces, carrots etc. Last is ground cover to fill the gaps because bare soil is unhealthy soil. Creeping thyme and wild strawberries are my

You can use ornamentals for any of these layers, but Daubentons kale is compulsory in my opinion. Management: stop digging your soil over. The days of doubledigging are gone. Top dressing with organic matter and letting nature ameliorate is the way forward. We’re replicating falling leaves or dying herbaceous vegetation and reducing disturbance of the soil ecosystem. Also, stop removing spent vegetation to a compost heap if you

Grow beans up your fence, put perennial vegetables into your borders (Amaranthus looks great and tastes good too; herbs look good particularly when they flower), put a gooseberry, blackberry or raspberry Rubus phoenicolasius into an awkward bit at the back of a bed. To celebrate 100 years since the first girl guide troop was set up in Tewkesbury, the Museum is hosting a display of guiding memorabilia going back to the early 1900s. There are dozens of colourful items that many people will remember wearing or using in their youth, including uniforms, badges and flags. A lot of visitors make strange cooing sounds when they see the exhibits:

Tewkesbury Bridge Club Following a difficult couple of years, Tewkesbury Bridge Club is now in full swing, playing Duplicate bridge regularly each Wednesday evening. We have new premises, and play in the Sports Hall of Tewkesbury Baptist Church, on Station Road. The club was founded over 60 years ago and is affiliated to the English Bridge Union. TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW with John Dixon We learn so much from each other, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society I am grateful for Christine Mitchell of Northway who wished me to know that her farm grew hops in the past and they had oast houses, with a Hop Yard, commemorated by a modern street name. I would now love to see a Northway oast house photo and a receipt with the Hop Pole’s name! The Good Old Days in Tewkesbury is the best social media, which supplies so many historic photos and comments to enrich them. I was fascinated by this flood
bound house (A). Mary Daff informed us that Mr. Bartholomew Sweet the undertaker who used to live there – and he certainly did in 1955 when he participated in an Aldermanic Election. Steve Perry remembered the lovely walled garden, when he worked at Mitton Garage in the early 70s, cleaning new cars. Tony Carlyon gains an A for his precision: “I can tell you the precise date when the cottage was demolished. It was 23rd January 1976. I passed it in the morning on the way to a job interview in Gloucester, and it was gone when I passed the site on the way home (I

didn’t get the job by the way!)”. Ken Hodges remembers that it was called Verdun Cottage, which interests me recalling the famous battle of WWI – which did not involve the British directly. Patricia Mace is determined that it was not named after the battle, but it is a family name. “My father-in-law was Frank Verdun Mace and my husband and I named our eldest son Paul Verdun Mace”. Apparently, this was a very popular name at the time of the Battle of Verdun and for years after. I think it was down to the battle, Patricia. Looking at genealogy website, FREEBMD you will find hundreds of first names, starting in December 1914 and gradually petering out, as memories faded except there were still three in December 1945. Frank V[erdun] Mace was registered in AprilJune 1916 and the first shot had been fired on 21 February 1916. Another sixteen were named in the county but no one from our county. Frank does not register as Verdun because it was not his first name – and he was born in Monmouthshire. Thanks to everyone for contributing to our knowledge.

Window and Door Installers Required to install aluminium and PVCu windows, doors, conservatories, roof lanterns and secondary glazing. Locations are generally within an hour’s travelling of Cheltenham; working hours Monday to Friday 7:30am to 4pm - plus overtime. Ideally, applicants should have at least one years’ experience in window and door installation to a high standard, although applicants who can demonstrate aptitude and a willingness to learn may be considered. A smart appearance and the ability to work in a small team is also essential. An NVQ Level 2 in Fenestration, CSCS card, IPAF, PASMA and DBS would be advantageous, but we are willing to provide training for any suitable candidate who does not possess the above qualifications. A full clean driving licence is required.
Installation Manager Responsibilities will include managing installers, liaising with customers, visiting sites to check progress of projects, meeting monthly installation targets, liaising with Clearway’s management team and ensuring that vans are well maintained. Applicants should have previous experience in managing window and door installation teams, either in the commercial or domestic markets,
and be qualified to CSCS/ NVQ Level 2, although training can be arranged for the right candidate. Hours of work will be 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday, but work outside of these hours may be necessary from time to time subject to the demands of the business. A full clean driving licence is essential, as is a good standard of IT and literary skills.
Window and Door Fabricators Ideally, applicants will have experience in window and door fabrication or a similar environment, although full training will be given to the right persons. Our fabricators must be competent with hand tools, excellent time keepers, and be enthusiastic with a willingness to learn. The ability to follow instructions and work as part of a small team is essential. Hours of work will be Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm plus overtime when available.

Steve has released twelve highly-acclaimed solo albums, one of which (Steve Ashley's Family Album, 2021) was reissued by Talking Elephant, with extra tracks of the album first released by Woodworm Records in 1982. One song, Somewhere In A Song was reinstated from the original sessions and For Bruce, which Steve released on his album Another Day in 2017 was also included in recognition of the late Bruce Rowland's involvement in the production of the album. A biography of Steve's musical career, written by the prolific rock author, Dave Thompson, with contributions from many old friends and associates, was released nine years ago. 'Fire and Wine - an armchair guide to Steve Ashley' - traces Steve's fifty-year musical history, with a selection of rare photographs and a comprehensive catalogue of songs, releases and session musicians, from 'Farewell Britannia' through to 'Time and Tide' and beyond. The book was also made available in Kindle and Nook formats. Steve will be supported at The Old Baptist Chapel by local singersongwriter Mike Weaver. Introducing artForce collective Sarah Jemmett, Colin Clark, Tracey Cadogan, Carrie Sermon, Karen Fitzparick, and Jo Biggadike. We are a group of 7 local artists who originally came together while working on a project with Priors Park Neighbourhood Project to increase awareness of the charity and provide a way of raising funds, as well as promoting local artist’s work. The charity secured an empty shop in Tewkesbury and an art pop up shop was opened on 9th September 2020 and ran through to 24th December 2020. 10% of sales from the shop went to the charity along with a £200 donation from the group profits. We decided to try and stay together as a group and so formed artForce collective. Since those early days, we’ve gone from strength to strength, sharing our knowledge and resources to continue supporting our development as artists. During 2021 we had three exhibitions two at Winchcombe’s Dove Gallery and one at the Gardens Gallery in Cheltenham. These exhibitions have been a wonderful experience not only to promote each other’s work but also in meeting members of the
local community. This engagement with the public is something we hope to focus on in the future through running Pop-Up events, artists workshops and collaborating with small businesses and charities in the local area. “Becoming a part of artForce collective has given me support, mentoring and creative opportunities. The experience has offered insight, helped professional development and opened up shared exhibition opportunities. Our April meeting was certainly a quieter affair than usual due to illness, but it was lovely to welcome back a long-standing member and also welcome another new one. We were supposed to be having a talk about the GIs in Tewkesbury, but, unfortunately, our speaker was unable to attend. So, following announcements, we were put through our paces by Clare in an inpromptu quiz evening - watch out the rest of you, we may well be in line for the W.I. trophy!! The March meeting was lace making. With the help of Sue and Sue, many of our members completing snake bookmarks. A coffee morning is arranged for 27th April and a trip to Nature in Art is also being arranged for the very near future. Next month’s meeting is a talk on bee keeping, and hopefully local honey for sale. Mitton W.I meets at The Baptist Church in Station Road. 67 Barton Street is now the Bluebell Wood Florist shop. Beside it there’s a closed door which was once the entrance to an alley which went down to Saffron Road. The brickwork of the alley entrance has an intriguing ‘cutaway’ which must have had a purpose we can only speculate about; a ghost of a forgotten past. It’s had a lot of names. John Rogers, whose history of the alleys tells us much of what we know about them called it Evans Court, named for William Evans, ‘a plain working man, a nail-maker’ who lived in the front house and worked from a workshop in the alley. In the 1841 census, though, it was Clark’s Alley, named for Thomas Clark, a cooper. Before that it was Pullock’s Alley, named for George Pullock. In 1848, though, the commissioners for the Tewkesbury Streets decreed that it should be called Evans Court and that is what it remained, though occasionally being referred to

In 1841, five cottages had stocking makers amongst their occupants. she was an ‘eyesore’ and turned her out onto the street. He alleged that on the last occasion he was wholly justified because he’d arrived home to find another man in the house, which he took exception to. When the Bench refused to grant a maintenance order, a tussle broke out between them which court officers had difficulty calming down. Mrs Cook seems to have moved to Cheltenham. In 1937, there were five cottages in the alley, which were offered for sale as a single lot, together with the front house. Later in the same year, though, the alley joined the list of those scheduled for clearance. The process was slow because it had to give opportunities for owners to propose alternatives to demolition and it had to have government approval. The first proposal was that Nos 3 and 4 might be saved, Nos 1 and 2 should be subject to a clearance order, requiring the tenants to leave, and No 5 should be demolished. Two years later that was still the position. Despite the intervention of the war, and the housing crisis it brought. It appears that 1,2 and 5 were indeed demolished. 3 and 4 survived as separate dwellings into the 1950s. The last records found are of Albert Huggins being fined £1 for assaulting his neighbour, Ward Martin. Then, in 1952, Ward Martin was fined 10s (50p) for failing to stop at the ‘Halt’ line on the Ledbury Road junction whilst riding his bicycle. A common misdemeanour at the time. After that, the alley simply faded away and disappeared.

The Posh Car Boot Sale will take place on Windmill Hill, next to the Borough Council Offices. It is a collaborative venture between the Brimpsfield Music Society and the Tewkesbury Town Mayor’s Charity.
Brimpsfield have done these events before, but not in Tewkesbury. Brimpsfield Music Society raises money to give talented underprivileged children in Gloucestershire access to tuition and musical instruments.
Spring has Sprung, and with it the weeds are putting in an impressive appearance around the town. So Tewkesbury Regeneration Initiative in partnership with Tewkesbury in Bloom have set dates and meeting places to start clearing areas in an attempt to keep the Town Centre and Riverside presentable and attractive for both residents and visitors. If you would like to help please come and join us, just bring gardening gloves and your favourite weeding tool - or use one of ours.
The aim of the Town Mayor’s charity this year is to improve accessibility in the town, especially in the Town Museum and between the Back of Avon and the Anglo-American Garden of Remembrance. Many people in the

Our meeting this month was definitely not for the faint hearted or easily shocked, we had a very entertaining and somewhat surprising talk from Kirstie Bingham of the John Moore Museum. The title was Sex, Loos and Swearing, although not sure what to expect we all enjoyed a highly entertaining afternoon. It was such fun, the props and slides she had brought were real eyeopeners and caused lots of hilarity, and we all went home thankful that we now have privacy and modern sanitation. Our talk next month is “The trouble with Trivia”, in June we will be having Platinum Jubilee Tea Party, so as you can see, we have a very varied program throughout the year, as well as a monthly craft group and knit and natter, with the emphasis on natter. We are a very friendly group, and we would love to welcome you to our meetings which take place on the second Wednesday of every month at 2pm at the Wheatpieces Community Centre. Event postponed from 2020 celebrates the Somerset & Dorset Railway The Cotswold Festival of Steam returns to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway next month. Guest locomotives will join residents from Friday 3rd until Saturday 5th June, with a total of nine engines expected to be in steam, working an intensive timetable over the 14 mile line. The event, postponed from 2020, remembers the days of the much-celebrated Somerset & Dorset Railway, recreating the trains that once plied the route, albeit in the Cotswolds rather than the Mendip Hills. The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway has rightly passed into the stuff of legend. The route from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth through the Mendips was challenging with steep gradients, yet it handled heavy summer express trains including the famous the ‘Pines Express’ which first ran in 1910 between Manchester and Bournemouth West. The line passed through stunning scenery and was much loved by photographers, not least Ivo Peters, who took hundreds of outstanding photographs and cine film of the route, often including his beloved Mk VI Bentley. Closure of the line, parts of which were first built in 1862, finally happened as part of the Beeching cuts, on 7 March 1966 against considerable protest from the communities it served. GWSR spokesman Ian Crowder commented: “This is shaping up to be an especially exciting and spectacu-
lar event after a twoyear gap due to the pandemic. The ‘Somerset & Dorset’ theme was planned for our 2020 Festival which, of course, had to be cancelled. “Four of our five visiting engines were associated with the former Somerset & Dorset line, a chal-
direct (and the shortest) access to the South Coast from the Midlands via Somerset. It was heavily used by holiday traffic from the Midlands and North but fell victim to the infamous Beeching cuts of the 1960s. It is much missed – especially by those in the communities it once

that an additional feature will be the Bentley once owned by the late photographer, Ivo Peters. “During the latter years of the S&D many outstanding photographs of trains in the Mendips were taken by Ivo Peters. He often included his Bentley in the pictures he took. The car is now owned by Julian Birley BEM, and we are delighted that he is able to bring the car to the event.” A range of other attractions include displays, model railway, preservation society stands, beer tent and refreshments, Toddington Narrow Gauge Railway, ‘behind the scenes’ visits to the Toddington locomotive works and Winchcombe Carriage & Wagon works - as well as opportunities for pre-booked footplate and freight train brake-van rides. Stitchstory: The Immortalisation of History by Annabelle Lee Stitchstory is a unique opportunity focused on the local area and residents of Tewkesbury however all are welcome to get involved. This project encourages local people of all ages to add a stitch on one of ten panels depicting local historical events such as the Medieval Festival, The Mop Fair, The Floods and a myriad of other significant historical happenings, that are important to the immortalisation of our rich market town. There is also an opportunity to stitch personal history panel which will border the main piece, further showing the town’s personality that could potentially easily get lost due to the historical significance in the county and beyond. To immortalise this rich history further, a team of ‘Digital Storytellers’ have been recruited, which I’m happy to say I am also part of, and are interviewing people who have attended Stitchstory events or who have memories they want to share of the town. These stories will
create a QR trail around Tewkesbury that allows the wider community to engage with the history without having to scour the archives for it. This audio trail will take listeners on a tour of many local landmarks such as The Roses Theatre, The Abbey and just some of the very many Alleys whilst they listen to a Tewkesbury resident retelling a personal story or a humorous anecdote in connection to the
building or location. We’ve already met with people that have been personally touched by this place or events here, such as the 2007 flooding, but are looking for more stories. This trail can be listened to whilst following a map, in a walking sequence or as one-off discoveries that reveal more about Tewkesbury through the eyes of the people that know it best. There will also be an accessible route available which the Digital Storytellers are helping to design. In order to tell these rich stories effectively, the Digital Storytellers have been given early access to ‘The Lab’, which are offering accessible digital skill development for all ages and abilities and are part of Tewkesbury Library. This amazing space is full of advanced technological equipment such as VR headsets and a brand-new laser cutter (which we saw in action!) This Lab includes editing software and studio equipment that will be available for the public to use from late May, an exciting local opportunity that allows everyone to become more technocentric, if desired. The aforementioned QR trail along with the finished Stitchstory project will be launched on Saturday 21st May at The George Watson Memorial Hall on Barton Street and coincides with the Big Weekend event. This project gives Tewkesbury an im-
mortal voice and allows the town and its personal recollections to truly encapsulate its rich past and permit people to potentially discover something new about the town they live in. I think it can be of enormous benefit to patients and their GP. If the patient is on stable medication, then rather than having to reorder their medications every month, which takes up valuable Surgery time, then could ask their GP if it possible for them to go on Pathfinder. The Pathfinder system is where the GP can supply the pharmacy with a batch of prescriptions for up to a year. All the patient needs to do is to call the pharmacy once a month and peel off the items they require for the following month. Patients can turn off items not needed, but the following month they can turn those items back on, so it cuts waste and put the patients in control. If the patients is going on holiday and they

On Monday nights since the pitch was created in 2011, the sports centre has held a 6-a-side football league. The Tewkesbury Prawns, made up of 30something dads from the Walton Cardiff area, were one of the first teams to start playing. The Tewkesbury Prawns played their debut game in September 2011, against another team called Real Betis Hot Pot; sadly, the Tewkesbury Prawns lost 12-0. Many players joined and left the squad during the following few years, with only a few founding members surviving. Their fortunes have been varied, but their signature pink and black kit has always stood out and is recognisable by the other teams. By August 2020, the few members who remained were having difficulty fielding a team every week. However, Dave, the goalie, also played for another team, The Desperados, who were having trouble as

Last September, the school sports centre approached Leisure Leagues, one of the UK's largest and most experienced football league operators, and requested them to take over the Monday night competition. EXPLORING HISTORIC TEWKESBURY ON FOOT If you are fornuate enough to live in Tewkesbury, there’s a wealth of history to explore right on your own doorstep, writes Jack B. Walker. Project Alleycat is a community project set up to promote interest in Tewkesbury’s historic alleyways. The organisation offers leisurely walking tours, exploring the heritage of the alleys, and their social history. The next walk will be on Sunday 8th April, leaving from Warders Alley (next door to M&Co in the High Street) at 2.30pm. There is no need to book; the cost is £2.50 per person. Tewkesbury Battlefield Society runs regular guided tours of the1471 battle site, which last about two hours, and leave the Abbey Gates in Gander Lane at 7pm. The next dates are Thursday 2nd June and Thursday 7th July. Families and dogs on leads are welcome. The tours are free, although donations are accepted. 2022 Tour of Britain Cycle Race stages will start in Tewkesbury Britain’s premier cycling road races, the Tour of Britain, heads for Tewkesbury this summer. Stages for both the mens and womens races will start in the town. Gloucestershire County Council’s commitment to supporting tourism and active travel will see the Women’s Tour, the UK’s most prestigious women’s cycle race, visit the county in 2022 for a Tewkesbury to Gloucester stage on Wednesday 8th June. The women’s Stage Three will leave Tewkesbury and conclude in Gloucester, taking a route through the Forest of Dean. 100 of the world’s top female cyclists will be taking part in the premier event; the biggest field in the eight year history of the tour. Stage six of the men’s event will set off from Tewkesbury on Friday 9th September, and head through Bishop’s Cleeve before taking the high road through the Cotswolds to Cirencester, down into the South
