TEWKESBURY’S SUMMER ART TRAIL Talented mural artist,Brandon Higgins has been busy brightening doors in the Tewkesbury neighbourhood, painting vivid and amusing murals, imbuing a good mood for passers by. In Twyning, a super large double garage mural was commissioned by the Irwin family, and the Village Inn now sports doors with cartoon characters for the forthcoming Sausage and Cider festival. by Esi Edugyan Paperback, £8.99 This novel can be simply defined as a good read, it is also a very well written story. Whilst it begins as being about slavery it moves well beyond that. When we first meet the central character he is a slave but as the narrator, George Washington Black, [Wash to his friends] recounts his teenage years and his journey to a new life. The book is segmented into four sections starting in 1830. As an 11 year old we learn about Wash's hard life as a slave on the sugar plantation of the Wilde family. Two brothers arrive to take over the property after the death of their uncle, Erasmus is the epitome of the evil slave owner, his brother Christopher known as Titch, a scientist, is far more human, and an abolitionist. Wash ends up being assigned to help Titch in his experiments to build a "cloud-cutter," the strange vessel pictured on the cover. He discovers his natural artistic ability and Titch supports him and nurtures his various skills. This position saves Wash, but is also formative in his life. We witness Titch and Wash leave Barbados and end up travelling to the wastes of the Canadian Arctic. Their adventures distance this novel from being another on slavery as in each section it expands it's breadth. There is always the background of Wash's old life in Barbados and those like Big Kit who he left behind, and the slave hunter trailing him; threateningly in his mind.
By the third part, in 1834, Wash is alone in Nova Scotia, Titch having disappeared. His life here is always under threat and the wounds he has endured make him stand out, but a chance meeting while he is out painting, again changes his life when he encounters another scientist, marine zoologist, Geoffrey Goff and his daughter, Tanna. They all end up working together which sees Wash, a young man, in London in 1836. All that befalls Wash's formative years leads him to become the person that he is; intelligent but also troubled. The reader can enjoy the pleasure of uncovering the ups and downs of Wash's life and his friendship with Titch which leads him across the continents of the world. His travels make for a good read, and as each section of the book unfolds their two lives and those of their families and acquaintances lead this much praised novel towards it's conclusion in the Moroccan desert. TEWKESBURY RESTAURANT NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL AWARD MP for Tewkesbury Laurence Robertson has nominated the town’s Rajshahi restaurant for 2019’s Tiffin Cup. The cup, which recognises culinary diversity, is awarded by the Tiffin Club each year. MP’s nominate their favourite local restaurant in a quest to find the best South Asian food in the United Kingdom. The Rajshahi has made it through to the regional final, with an opportunity to progress to a cook off in the grand national final held at the
Inside the Rajshahi Restaurant House of Commons in July. The competition will be judge by MPs and guest celebrities. The Rajshahi’s management team comment-
ed: “Thanks to our MP Laurence Robertson for your recommendation. Wish us good luck. Hope we can due you all proud.” All proceeds from the event will go to charity. Changes to EPS and a new Pharmacy App The Electronic Prescription Service has now been upgraded, writes Peter Badham. Controlled drugs prescriptions can now be sent electronically from the GP surgery. This is a very great help, as up until recently, we had to collect the controlled drug prescriptions from each surgery, which often caused an extra delay. I am delighted to report that we have a Pharmacy App, which has numerous free func-
tions. The App enables you to order your medication when it is convenient to you, the App lets the patient know when the medication is ready to collect, advises them when to re-order their medication - and it even reminds the patient when to take their medication! It is a free service that I am sure many patients

GARDEN TOWN STATUS FOR TEWKESBURY AT ASHCHURCH Sustainable, well-designed and vibrant communities look like being the future for Tewkesbury, as the borough council wins its bid for the area to become a new Garden Town. The government has announced that Tewkesbury and its surrounding area is one of only a handful of locations to be awarded Garden Town status, which will see it receive around three quarters of a million pounds in initial funding to deliver long-term sustainable development plans. Garden Town status means the borough council and its stakeholders can develop Tewkesbury and its surrounding area in a really holistic way - helping to create vibrant, thriving settlements where people can live, work and raise families. This includes improving transport links, education provision and green infrastructure, such as new parks and cycle routes. It also means the council will have access to specialist government support and strategic planning advice. The Garden Town status is specifically aimed at helping the council deliver up to 10,195 houses for Tewkesbury at Ashchurch over the period to 2041.

Community groups are being asked to express an interest in funds that could pay for new playing pitches, or could help make improvements to existing pitches, in Twyning. Twyning has seen a number of new homes introduced recently and, as a result of Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, Tewkesbury Borough Council has collected contributions from the developers to invest back into local community projects, specifically
for playing pitches. Community groups are able to express an interest in the funds where the allocation is not explicit. Expressions of interest will need to highlight that a need in the community has arisen as a result of a new housing development. The closing date for
expressions of interest is 6th May 2019. Andy Sanders, economic and community development manager, said: “Almost £50,000 has been put aside for playing pitches in Twyning. We would love to hear from local groups who have seen an opportunity open up as a

THEN & NOW with John Dixon I was intrigued when Bill Treen posted this photograph (A), writes John Dixon. It clearly revealed Crouch's former bakery, which is now converted into a home - but what was the location of the houses? Bill was not born then but thinks it features his uncle Frank and his ‘Aunt Bobs’, wife of William Cubitt Treen, whose family ran the nearby Nottingham Arms (129 High Street), from 1939-1958. Thanks to Steve Goodchild's article on Walls Court (June 2017),

we know more about the history of the area. This photograph is looking from the High Street to the Oldbury with a block of communal toilets to the rear. This popular route, formerly Walls Alley, is now a thoroughfare with permissive blue bricks (laid down 1888-1892), but now we have to take two right-angled turns at the end of the former Crouch's Bakery and then again to the Oldbury along what was formerly Heath's Alley, now mostly closed to the High Street. The former
Walls Alley outline can be seen on the map(C). Walls Alley was named after James Wall, "very respectable and a tailor," who owned 130 High Street (now the Kurdish Barbers), with the restored Tailor's House behind. It contained five dwellings seem in the photo but was partly blocked off between 1871-1881 when Thomas Walker, the fairground ride manufacturer, bought the premises which people will remember as Charlie White's engineering until it was converted recently into housing accommodation. These houses should have been cleared in the 1939 'slum clearances' but the war earned them
a reprieve. However the MOH had declared: ‘None of the houses had air space at the rear and all were generally damp with inadequate, ventilation and natural lighting..., only one of the seventeen houses having a sink, and … none of the houses had washhouses.' An evacuee in 1943 stated that they were "only fit for a pig-sty"! They have now been replaced by buildings owned by the Nottingham public house. Can any readers confirm they were demolished soon after the 1954 Town Council order and add anymore memories of this muchchanged thoroughfare?

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
IN AND OUT OF THE WOODS Tiddesley Wood, in a quiet corner of south Worcestershire, offers fine and varied walking year round, writes Jack B. Walker. But at this time of year with woodland flowers coming into bloom, it is particularly atmospheric. This month’s route also skirts the perimeter of the woods (which are managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust) and gives a different perspective to the forest trails. Tiddesley is situated on an elevated position above the River Avon on the outskirts of charm-
ing Pershore. Park in the Wildlife Trust’s car park on the Besford Bridge Road,
about half a mile west of the town. Leave the car park and join the track which leads to the woods. At the edge of the wood, bear left (1) and follow the path which skirts the trees between two fences. Keep following this path around the perimeter, with the trees on your right.

DISTANCE: approx 2.25 miles; ascent through wood. Can be muddy on the bridleway. CAR PARKING: in the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust car park at the edge of Tiddesley wood. REFRESHMENTS: choice of shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés in nearby Pershore. SKETCH MAP NOT TO SCALE: OS sheet 190 (Malvern Hills and Bredon) is recommended.
Eventually you will emerge into some meadows (with picnic tables) and meet another path (2). Straight ahead of you can see the imposing stone tower of Pershore Abbey, looking down the Vale of Evesham with the Lenches in the distance. Turn right along the
path, walking in a southerly direction. Ahead of you now is one of the best views of Bredon Hill in its entirety. This is the scarp side of the limestone outlier of the Cotswolds, which is often referred to as ‘the stranded whale’ because of the way it rises above the flat plain. Follow the path as it turns and descends towards a new housing development, to meet a gravelled lane (3). Bear right up the lane - which is a bridle way towards the woods, which you enter through a kissing gate (4). If you wish to shorten the walk, take the path to the right through the trees, which will eventually bring you back to point one. Please note that there is a firing range to the south west of Tiddesley (see sketch map), so do take note of the warning signs and marker flags if you plan to venture deeper into the woods. OSTEOPATHY ADVICE with Katie Hogg, Two Rivers Osteopathy
The difference between Osteopathy, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic I often get asked what the difference is between the manual therapies. I have my standard reply, but I thought I would check in with some colleagues to see what their thoughts were. Aidan Barry, a Chiropractor at Back in Action says that the biggest difference is the spelling, whilst the next biggest is the pronunciation. Most differences are historical, but we've evolved to the same place as we've gathered evidence. Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with working in the biopsychosocial arena; with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Jodie Breach, Senior Physiotherapist at Nuffield Health in Cheltenham says, Physiotherapists aim to help people affected by illness, disability or injury through movement and exercise, manual therapy and advice. They take a “whole person” approach to health and wellbeing, including discussing your general
lifestyle. They use a combination of approaches in a treatment plan that will enable you to take control of your health and get back to what you love to do. I would describe osteopathy as is a manual therapy which treats the musculoskeletal system, using hands to diagnose and to treat. Osteopathy aims to look at where the pain is and what is causing it. This may be an issue local to the pain or a more mechanical issue which includes compensations through the body. Osteopathy uses muscle stretching and massage as well and joint adjustments and mobilisations to get your musculoskeletal system in the
Katie Hogg best possible position so it can heal itself. We address all aspects of your lifestyle in order to manage this healing process. So, as you can see from our individual descriptions, there is not much difference between the manual therapies in definition. Indeed, they all historically come from similar dogma. The important thing to establish is that the practitioner you have chosen is qualified and registered. Once you have established that, then it is just a question of finding the practitioner who you get on with, who understands you and your needs and who you are comfortable with. Tewkesbury’s new Micro Pub, The Cross House Tavern, opened its doors in early April and has won plaudits from the public for the sensitive and fine restoration carried out to the building by its new owner. Suspended ceilings and modern wall cladding installed by previous businesses, were removed, revealing, classic architecture and decoration from a number of time periods. The front bar now features the fine, Art Deco tiling that was probably added when a Butchers business occupied it, but substantial damage to the tiles had been made over the years. New, replacement tiles were colour matched and hand made by a specialist manufacturer in Stoke on Trent, which, now repaired, create a terrific warm feel to the bar. Strong Oak beams, small nooks, a cast iron range with blue and white tiles all add to the period feel of the building. Manager, Catherine Roche told us she was delighted with the instant hit, the pub had with its customers, and that there would be a selection of six real ales, ciders and perries, sourced from within a twenty mile radius of Tewkesbury, available at all times. Traditional pub fayre will be on offer to include pickled and scotch eggs, pork pies, ham and cheese baps and even a cheese board. The new pub has added to the civic and period charm of the town and now doubt be a new venue for real ale enthusiast.

A small group, including guests, from Longdon District Probus Club recently visited the Much Marcle cider mill and was favoured by a very pleasant Springlike day. After a cup of coffee we met Jenny, our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide (see photo) who gave us an introductory chat in front of ‘The Bounds’, the original farmhouse lived in by Henry Weston. After an interesting video the group was shown the year-round ‘manufacturing’ process, starting with the arrival of the cider apples in the Autumn, through mashing, fermentation, maturing and finally ‘packaging’ into bottles or barrels. Even though the basic process of making cider hasn’t changed significantly over the years, steps need to be taken to ensure the quality and consistency of the product. For instance, only local cider apples are used (from Herefordshire, Glouces-
tershire and Worcestershire) and champagne yeast is used for fermentation (rather

Sometimes in life, it’s the unexpected things, no matter how small, that give us the greatest pleasure, writes Amanda Orton. With the Easter holidays last month, there have been lots of children in Tewkesbury – some local and some holidaymakers. I had a surfeit of spare necklaces in my shop, so decided to give them to youngsters shopping with their parents. The smiles on their faces, at receiving a surprise gift from a shopkeeper has been magical and we have been met with very effusive thank yous.
We have asked them to pass the “gift” on by being helpful to mum later in the day and they have often gone on to tell us about jobs they have already done to help out and what they are doing over the Easter break.
My unexpected gift came later one afternoon, while I was being pestered for a biscuit or two by a friendly greyhound. Had I seen the swans, the greyhound’s owner asked? Come and have a look she said, and there were Mr & Mrs Swan minding a clutch of seven blue-grey eggs on the bank of the river. What a fabulous sight! As we watched, the swans carried on plucking at the surrounding vegetation to add to the
nest, seemingly oblivious to the gathering audience, fascinated by the spectacle. After a while, the swan sitting on the eggs stood up, treading carefully with his enormous black feet. He moved to one side and the other swan gracefully settled herself down on the eggs. After a few seconds, she stood up again, probing at the eggs with her bill. She was turning them. This process went on for a good few minutes before she eventually settled down again, tucked her head under her wing and seemed to go to sleep. The other swan stayed at her side to protect his mate and their eggs against predators. As we were watching this fascinating spectacle, other people joined us and various conversations started up. After a while, we all went on our way, richer for our impromptu nature lesson about nesting swans and smiling at the conversations we’d had with complete strangers. Visitors to Tewkesbury often tell me what a friendly place they find it and that is just wonder-
ful to hear. I love this about Tewkesbury too – how friendly people are and how strangers chat to each other. It’s so easy to smile at someone and say something nice. That is a gift in itself and it costs absolutely nothing, yet is too often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The sense of community and caring that we have in our little town is absolutely priceless and must be nurtured at all costs.
SHAKESPEARE AT RIPPLE The Worcestershire Players head for Ripple on Saturday 8th June to give an outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The play will be presented at 7.30pm in Lessex House Field and tickets, at £15 each, are available from The Railway Inn. Jasmine Kilpatrick from Bredon named as a finalist in the 2019 Petplan Veterinary Awards Local vet nurse, Jasmine Kilpatrick of Casvet, Cheltenham has been shortlisted for the esteemed title of Vet Nurse of the Year in the prestigious 2019 Petplan Veterinary Awards. Now in its 20th year, the awards have gone from strength to strength and this year Petplan received over 40,000 nominations. The annual event will celebrate the nation’s most outstanding veterinary professionals, who have been nominated by their colleagues and pet owners for their hard work and dedication to keeping pets healthy.
Commenting on her nomination, Jasmine said: “Becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) is a dream come true, so being a finalist for such a prestigious award is just incredible. I feel completely overwhelmed and astounded by people’s generosity and as a newly qualified nurse this news has really boosted my confidence.”
Judges were particularly impressed with her dedication to personal development and willingness to go the extra mile with home visits. She has also proactively driven changes in the practice to improve efficacy and development. 䡵 Chase Gin Choice at Teddington Stores Many people may be surprised to read that this even includes gin and vodka, made in nearby Herefordshire by Chase Distillery. Will Chase, perhaps better known as the brains behind the upmarket brand Tyrrells Crisps, grew up in Herefordshire. He’d been farming potatoes there for over twenty years, before hitting upon the idea of turning his own produce into chips. By the summer of 2002, the business was born, and the success that followed has been phenomenal. It was in 2004, whilst travelling in the UK looking for packing equipment, that Will stumbled upon a small distillery making vodka from potatoes. Ever the entrepreneur, Will thought there would be a market for his spirits if he could make a quality product and sell it with provenance and pedigree. He sourced a traditional still and had a family with over 100 years experience make the rectifying equipment. By June 2008 the vodka had been produced from Will’s own potatoes, with the new distillery located right on his farm. Eleven years down

STRUMMERS GUITAR OF THE MONTH by Paul Thomas
GIBSON SONEX As the 1970’s limped to a close, beset by a confusion of PostPunk, Post-Modernism and PostManpat, the Gibson guitar company were having problems of their own, writes Paul Thomas. They just couldn’t understand how they were being so massively outsold by their fierce rivals, Fender, when it seemed self-evident to them that theirs’ was a far superior product. Cue meetings in smoke-filled rooms and much soul-searching. Eventually, the Gibson executives came to a conclusion. Fenders were more popular, they decided, because they were cheaper and more readily available. To solve the problem of price, Gibson decided they would need to use more cost-effective materials for the body of their Fender-busting new design and (gasp) copy Fender’s use of a bolt-on neck; far more economical than Gibson’s traditional set-neck approach. OK, so that was price taken care of; they could now produce a guitar at a similar price point to Fender. The second problem (availability) was going to take some serious thinking about. You see, in order to nurture their reputation as purveyors of quality and exclusivity, Gibson made it very hard (and expensive) for music stores to become “Official Gibson Dealers”. Fender, on the other hand, were far freer with their favours and, consequently, it was much easier for guitarists to pop into a local “guitar shop” (remember them?), test drive a Strat or Tele and…buy it. So, Gibson needed to get their new guitar into all the little guitar shops from Cleveland to Cleethorpes, Sacramento to Swindon, Birmingham to…Birmingham… and they needed to do it without upsetting those “Official Gibson Dealers” who had sold their sold their souls to achieve their exalted status. Gibson’s solution was pretty ingenious. Instead of the usual Gibson headstock logo, they would create a brand-new logo for their brand-new line of guitars. The new guitar would go by the name “Sonex” with a headstock that sported the logo; The Gibson Guitar Company USA. The body was constructed from an inner core of tone wood, sandwiched between layers of a composite material called Resonwood and the neck, of course, was bolted on. Everything else about the guitar was like, well, a Gibson - pick-ups, bridge, tuners… everything. The result was a fabulous, powerful, more affordable guitar but, unfortunately, the quality of the instrument did not translate into sales. Quite the opposite, in fact. Fender players were never going to take to this hum-bucking rock monster just because it had a bolt-on neck. And Gibson players were appalled by the bolt-on and the Resonwood and wouldn’t go near the Sonex with a bargepole. The consequence of all this were some of the direst sales figures in the history of electric guitars. Following a proud launch in 1980, the Sonex series was quietly shelved and, by 1984, Gibson were pretending the whole experiment had never happened. However, we know the experiment did happen, don’t we? And if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of these ace guitars… give it a try because (whisper it) it’s an absolute cracker! This month marks ten years of the popular Cotswolds Walking Festival, writes Jack B. Walker. Organised by Winchcombe Walkers are welcome, this year’s festival takes place from Friday 17th-Sunday 19th May. Advance booking is essential for all of the walks and events, and may be made by visiting the website www.winchcombewelcomeswalkers.com/festival Routes vary from an easy three miles exploring the historic town of Winchcombe, to a strenuous 13.5 mile hike over the wolds to the highest point in the county. There is much to interest ramblers of all abilities here. There’s a trek to Beckford Nature Reserve, a visit to an archaeological dig at Sudeley Castle, a ride on a steam train (which includes a tour of the GWR heritage railway’s engine workshops), pub lunches and even a visit to a Cotswold brewery. Severn Unit MVS set buoys to warn boaters of submerged narrowboat hazard When a 60ft narrowboat failed to rise on her mooring poles and sank at Bredon after the River Avon came into flood after the heavy rain in Mid March, Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service was called into action to see if they could help and put out warning buoys. Head of Unit Nic Price said “First of all we had to locate exactly where the stricken vessel lay and then our team had to use great ingenuity to set a row of marker buoys attached to weights around the sunken boat which had slipped a good 12 feet out into the river. Nothing at all was showing above the water and it was a hazard to navigation so the area needed to be marked and protected quickly.” Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) Volunteer Director Paul Cronin passed on the thanks of the Trust’s Chief Executive Clive Matthews and the ANT Council to Severn Unit
for doing this job and said “At the time the ANT workforce was in the middle of vital major repair work further up the Avon at Evesham lock so the MVS saved us having to deploy
some much needed staff to do this job at Bredon. We were very grateful for the Unit’s prompt response so that the area got protected until the boat could be raised.”

2nd Tewkesbury Guides Fundraising for SARA 2nd Tewkesbury Guides and their Leaders visited SARA headquarters last month to present a cheque to Anton Richardson, Fund Raiser Manager for SARA. The Guides and their Leaders donated £180 from their Christmas fundraising efforts in Priors Park. The crew from SARA came along and helped the Guides by towing Santa’s sleigh whilst Rudolph and friends had a rest. The Guides and SARA members walked through Priors Park wishing everyone a Happy Christmas. The Guides had an enjoyable time and there was a real community feel about the night. EU Settlement Scheme : Tewkesbury company to ease Brexit anxiety for its EU Employees Tewkesbury EU Citizens could face a round trip of over an hour to get to their nearest government scanning centre, but an innovative move by a Tewkesbury employer is set to save its employees the journey. Following Brexit, all EU Citizens are required to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme in order to continue living and working legally in the UK after December 2020 (or June 2021 if the UK leaves the EU with a deal). Idemia UK Ltd, based in Tewkesbury are running a series of support sessions for its EU employees wishing to apply for settled or presettled status through the scheme. HOPP Youth Club coming to Tewkesbury Heart of Priors Park Community Interest Company are proud to announce that after months of organising and preparing, HOPP Youth Club will begin on Friday 3rd May 2019. The youth club will be for ages 12 – 16-year olds, which will be held at Tewkesbury Youth Club, Link Road, Tewkesbury from 7pm – 8.30pm. There will be subs of £1.00 per teenager, which will go towards activities and hopefully raise enough to do a day trip in the summer holidays. The tuck shop will be available every week with a small charge. The Youth Club will be overseen by seven volunteers who have had an Enhanced DBS Check and a lot of training including Safeguarding. Donna Wallis, who is the Youth Leader said “We are delighted to finally get the youth club of the ground and we hope the teenagers will come along. We will have lots of different activities but would like some ideas from the teenagers on what they would like to do. We are asking that parents come along on the 3rd May to meet the volunteers and see what we will be doing.” A spokes person for HOPP said “The Youth Club will be a great asset for Tewkesbury because the teenagers are bored and need something to look forward to each week. The seven volunteers have worked hard with our committee to
get the Youth Club up and running. We would like to thank all seven volunteers for their dedication and hard work over the last 3 months. For teenagers 16 – 17 we are looking at starting a youth leadership program, which will give them the knowledge to be able to lead the youth club with our volunteers in the future. HOPP and the youth club volun-

NEWTOWN W.I. At our April meeting we learnt that ‘The WillowTrust’ charity was founded in 1979 to provide two specially built broad beamed boats on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal. Each boat is wheelchair accessible with all up to date facilities required. This means that each year up to 7,000 disabled and seriously ill children, adults and their carers can spend a day of fun and freedom on the water at no cost to themselves. Their day out can help them experience new skills and be an unforgettable adventure. Qualified skippers are assisted by a pool of about 90 volunteer helpers. It costs £175,00.00 per year to maintain and run the boats all of which is raised through sponsorship and donations. For further information visit www.willowtrust.org. POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater How do you measure great moments? Are they big wins? Big social events? Fabulous holidays or jobs? Some can be outwardly very tame and unexciting yet, at the same time,life changing, says David Slater, as this story will show you. The taxi driver had always enjoyed his job. He had been in the business for most of his working life. It wasn't the driving he loved so much as the opportunity of meeting people. He chose to work at nights as that was when he met the most interesting of people. People who wanted to talk. People who would make him laugh or cry. There was one night he received a phone call which was to lead to him having what he later called “the most important moment” in his life. He arrived at the address he had been given and honked on his horn which was his usual way of letting people know the taxi had arrived. No one appeared. He honked again but still no response. He decided to go and knock on the door. It was risky. It could mean someone wished him ill or it could mean that someone needed assistance. He knocked on the door and immediately heard a frail voice say “Just a minute, dear!” He heard something being dragged across the floor and when the door eventually opened he saw a frail old lady standing by the side of her suitcase. She was dressed in an old fashioned print dress such as you saw on the old films of the wartime. The furniture was covered
GREAT MOMENTS COME UNANNOUNCED in dust sheets. The walls were bare. The driver picked up the case and put it in the car. He then went back and helped the little lady to the taxi and helped her in, making sure she was comfortable. All of the time she kept thanking him and saying how kind and helpful he was. She gave him an address and said there were some places she would like to see on the way, even though it was night time. “I am on my way to a hospice,” she said. “The doctor says that I haven't got long. I called you as I don't have any family to take me.” The taxi driver turned off the meter and said “ You just say where you want me to take you and I will do so with pleasure!” They drove for two or three hours. They passed the school where she used to teach; the house where she lived with her late husband ; the hall where she used to go dancing as a young girl; the church where she was married; the park where she used to go and feed the birds. Eventually they reached the hospice. Two people came out as they were obviously expecting her. They carried her suitcase and carefully sat her in a wheel chair ready to go into the building. “How much do I owe you?” she asked the taxi man. “Nothing,” he replied. “But you can't do all that for nothing,” she said looking intently at him. He simply bent down and gave her
a warm hug and said, “It was a pleasure to do that for you”. “You have given an old lady some moments of joy she can remember always,” she said, beaming at him. The nurse turned the chair round and pushed it carefully to the door. They went through and the door shut. That door shutting was, as the driver was to say later,
the closing of a life. He was pleased he had been the driver to take the old lady on this special journey. Someone else may not have agreed to the lady's requests and may have been rude and ill tempered. He took no more calls that night. He went home and sat quietly thinking about his evening's work.

I have just lived my GREATEST MOMENT.” The story tells us that great moments often catch us when we least expect them and where we least expect them. Others may see
them as small and unimportant, even insignificant but the thing is that we recognise the true greatness and importance of that special moment in our life. Be prepared for your greatest moment to come when you least expect it. May even be today! Are you ready to embrace it? It will be great but will very likely not advertise itself as such at the time you first encounter it. David Slater
