Chris Tomkins, from the school in Brensham Road, said: “We saw a competition from Jet2 on social media about the chance to win the ultimate school trip. To enter, pupils had to create a promotional piece of material for the Katmandu Theme Park in Mallorca. “We were going to enter the competition as a whole class just before Christmas, but localised snow and pipeworks meant the school had to close for different reasons - and our time was disrupted. “So instead, we ran an after-school club, of which about half of the class managed to regularly attend. “We had all sorts of entries, from stop motion animation to Minecraft videos to posters to logos and everything in between! “All of our entries

‘A Boy In Winter’ by Rachel Seiffert Paperback, £8.99

This is a shortish novel in comparison to some, yet by being succinct it does not lessen the story it tells; though it is not a light relaxing read. The main background to the story is the Nazi invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent rounding up and massacre of the native Jewish population. With this as the backdrop the reader is introduced to the main three characters, two young brothers, Yankel and Momik, who flee their home before dawn to try to reach their school teacher's house for safety ahead of the threatened arrival of the Nazi troops. The third, Yasia is the daughter of a marshland farmer who has come to town to trade her parent's apples, but also ever hopeful of seeing her fiancee who, after escaping enlistment in the Soviet army, has returned home and joined the local Ukrainian police. She too is in danger, but stays at her uncle's home, but when she finds the boys she hides them, and then their lives are bound together. Another principal character at the start of the book is a Nazi engineer, Otto Pohl, who has avoided front line action by using his qualifications and is in charge of building a new road across the marshlands for the Wehrmacht. He shows concern for the Jewish population and refuses their conscription into his labour force, and during a visit to the town he too becomes somewhat involved in the three young lives.

Once they are in the countryside their lives are still at risk, and we follow them as Yasia, told not to go home, leads them towards another uncle's village in the woods; it is Yankel's strong will that binds them together. Their stories are the heart of this novel, but it also records in some graphic detail the terrible conditions and treatment of the local Jewish population including the boys' parents. This is not a book for the lighthearted, but those pages covering the Nazi atrocities are recounted with Rachel Seiffert's respect of history. As she is part German, her view of the Nazi regime in W.W.2 adds a dimension to her writing, coupled with her mastery of the English language. [Her first book, also covering the war, "The Dark Room" is worth a read]. "A Boy in Winter" was very well reviewed when it first came out in hardback, now available in paperback it is written with a pace which takes the reader through the historical events, and leads us to how the youngster's lives evolve in the forest. A close shave, then in the saddle for charity Local resident Ed Corrigan is certainly pulling all the stops out to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Trust. In June he will join other fundraisers on a gruelling 350 mile sponsored cycle ride from London to Amsterdam. Last month he visited Tewkesbury hair salon Jennifer’s to have his legs waxed and his hair and beloved beard shaved off. Through the help of the local community and businesses, Ed has already raised nearly £1600 for the MS Trust, but would love to raise more. Ed’s wife Emm explained: “Ed was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis eighteen months ago. “This was after caring for his mother for over 25 years, who had the same disease and sadly passed away seven years ago. “Ed has felt that he wanted to give something back to the charity that has supported and helped us since his diagnosis. “We also want to say a massive thank-you to those who have donated and supported Ed with

The â€˜Big Weekendâ€™ will take place on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May, in the town centre and down by the riverside. Skallywags Kidzone will in the Town Hall Gardurday, with drama workentertain the youngsters ens from 10am on Satshops and lots of fun. Over at the Rugby Club there is a charity dog show with entries on the day (registration from 10.30am, judging from 11.15am). In the town centre there will be stalls and fairground rides, plus musical entertainment. In the evening the fun moves inside with Northern Soul at the Watson Hall and Spiritual Platform at the Town Hall (7pm). Riverside events (from 10.45am) include paddle board taster sessions, boat trips and sail pasts, rescue dog swims and demonstrations, duck races and guided walks. Sunday 20th is Royal Regatta Day, with similar events to the Saturday plus boat races. influenza, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. She did not die in France but in her place of work, Tredington Isolation Hospital, now a housing development near the Odessa Inn. Ironically, she died after visiting her sick sister who was a patient in her hospital - and the sister died soon afterwards. We all know how easy it is to catch ‘flu - but rarely do we die of it. The first local soldier to die was a year earlier when Frederick W Taylor died in Bristol, where he was serving. Both deaths highlight that it was sometimes difficult for such deaths in this country to be regarded as a war death, as neither name is included on our War Memorial. It proved to be a strange disease: it broke out in summer rather than the usual winter; it struck down young, apparently healthy people, rather than the very young or elderly and it came in two waves – the first took Kathleen but the second took eight more local men. The first of these to be lost was Philip L. Marment, who had been

hospitalised in the first outbreak but had recovered to return to duty where he died at Le Havre on 31st October. His death typified the belief that it re-started in France, brought over by US soldiers, and was then returned to the UK via demobbed soldiers who in turn infected their welcoming families. Some people recovered - famously PM Lloyd George and Kaiser Bill himself - but their constitution had not been affected by poor food and battlefield conditions. Two more died in Bristol, but three died in France - on or after the Armistice: T Williams, A C Sallis and tragically CSM W H Price of Twyning. Not only had he survived the diseaseridden Salonika front and also won the Meritorious Service Medal, but he succumbed in France. 228,000 people in the UK died in this ‘flu epidemic. It ended suddenly and mysteriously in early 1919. It is estimated that up to 50 million died world-wide by the official end in December 1920. Seven of these victims

Most organisations, from small local clubs to big business, have an AGM, and Longdon District Probus Club is no exception. The AGM for the Club was held at the end of March at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury, which is just a couple of miles up the Ledbury road from the Mythe Bridge. It was an important meeting where, amongst other things, Club matters (including finances) are discussed, reports are presented, and officials are elected for 2018/19. This tried and tested process is a necessary one, since it ensures that the Club is in good hands and continues to run smoothly and efficiently during the coming year. Perhaps the ‘highlight’ of the AGM is the handing-over of the Chain of Office by the retiring Chairman. The photograph shows the retiring Chairman, Dennis Harvey (right) congratulating Nigel Thompson, the incoming Chairman. However, Dennis isn’t quite ‘let off the hook’ since he automatically remains on the Committee. Toward the end of the AGM Nigel presented his incoming address, which outlined his ambitions and plans for the Club for the coming year. Following a much-

needed break for tea/coffee and biscuits, a Club member, John Westcott, entertained members with a presentation showing transport from around the world. April sees the start of a new quarterly Programme of speakers, who provide enlightenment and/or entertainment for Club members. Longdon District Probus Club meets on most Monday mornings

at the Hunters Inn, Buckbury (together with occasional trips out and social events) and talks on a variety of topics are planned to take place throughout the year. Strolling leisurely down the hill from Prior’s Park, one passes the Vineyards playing fields on the left, with new housing on the right followed by the Rugby and Bowls Clubs on the “Moats,” writes John Dixon. How different was the scene in 1948 when the young photographer, Cliff Day, took this splendid black and white photo. Cliff is now a life member of Tewkesbury Historical Society. In the Middle Ages Perry Hill was owned by the monastery of Tewkesbury, where pears for Perry making were grown; in 1842 a coin, a 'noble of Henry VI' was dug up by a labouring man. In 1875 there was controversy caused by the felling of a tree under which Methodist founder, John Wesley, preached. In 1920 youngsters, Sircombe and Cash, were fined for damaging these trees. The area was exploited by the Coates family of market gardeners, who lived in Perry Hill House from at least 1861 until it was destroyed in 1964. The 1948 photograph reveals that allotments, provided by the Oddfellows, a group that persuaded working men to save for ill-health before the NHS. As was common, pigs were also reared and some of them were sold at the Berkeley Arms pub in Church Street. Indeed in 1944 it was thought that a falling heavy iron chimney of a pig sty accidentally killed a Thomas Woodward. The late Jim Graham spent his early childhood days on a small holding there with his father, a local bricklayer, who also bred pigs and free range geese and chickens on the Moats. All this horticultural activity ceased in about 1973 when a large residential council estate replaced them. This has been the fate of so many allotments in recent years.

With the increasing number of clients, the Repair Café is always looking for new volunteers. These can be experienced repairers, engineers, mechanics, seamstresses, woodworkers or just people handy at fixing things. But we also welcome younger hands and brains, more familiar with modern technology and fashion, including computers, musical instruments and, of course, phones.

And we need nonrepairers to cover administration, front of house, publicity, photographers, even video makers to make instructional films and record interesting fixes. The café meets once a month, on a Saturday 3 to 6 PM, so most volunteers would need to be able to attend then. All volunteers, old and new, can expect a lot of support from exiting team members. It is a lot of fun, if a bit hectic, and team

members get a lot of satisfaction from meeting a wide range of people, reviving lost causes and saving perfectly usable kit from the tip. And free coffee and cakes! But above all, what makes Repair Cafes so worthwhile, is the sheer uplifting positivity of the place: “let’s give it a go”. and many more. Local authors will discuss their books and we’ll hear about the mills powered by the River Isbourne. It’s not just listening and looking: come along to workshops and learn new skills from picking up a ukelele (and, we hope, playing it!) to photographing steam trains. As ever, this year’s festival is good value. For example, Saturday workshops have prices attractive to families, while some events, such as the ‘Coffee Concerts’, are free. The festival closes with a sparkling all-day fair on Bank Holiday Monday. The streets will be full of specialist stalls and buzzing with entertainment from ‘Festival Fringe’, while local shops and cafés will be delighted to welcome folk to try their wares. Tewkesbury Triathlon Tewkesbury Triathlon Club’s Aquathlon series drew to a close with the final 400m swim and 5k run event taking in place in much better weather than some of the earlier ones. There was a new name in first place with James Booker pipping second place finisher Nigel Gaskin by 6 seconds in a time of 23:09. The female winner was Laura McPeake in 28:23. Male open winner was Richard Purkiss who followed up the previous day’s 4th place at the Forest of Dean half marathon by recording a time of 25:08. First male veteran was Nigel Gaskin in 23:16 and first male Supervet was Andrew Cogger in 26:50. Female open winner

was Kay Henderson (31:42). Female veteran winner was Tewkesbury’s Claudia Wilesmith (28:46) and first female Supervet was Jennie Marshall in 31:20. Overall series winners were Nigel Gaskin and Laura McPeake. With the finish of the aquathlon series, attention now turns to an exciting day of racing at the Spring Sprint Triathlon which takes place at the Tewkesbury Leisure Centre on the 6th May. The River Severn once supported a huge fishing industry, but its migratory fish populations the have suffered severe declines since the Industrial Revolution. The twaite shad (historically known as the ‘May fish’) is a species in the herring family which migrates upstream from the sea to lay its eggs. Hundreds of thousands of shad once migrated each spring, but the construction of weirs the 1850’s caused the population to decline severely. These dams prevented the twaite shad from accessing its historic spawning grounds in the middle and upper reaches of the river. The ambitious new project ‘Unlocking the Severn’, aims to reverse

the fortunes of the twaite shad and restore its population. Civil engineering works will create ‘fish passes’, enabling migratory fish to navigate around the weirs that have acted as barriers for so long.

SUCCESSFUL FLOOD RESCUE BY SEVERN UNIT MVS After 5 days stranded aboard their family narrowboat with the Tewkesbury floods at Easter, Poppy the dog from Cornwall decided that this was quite enough as she longed to put her paws on dry land again. Her owners asked Avon Lockeeper Nicola Lancaster for help as they needed to abandon ship and she in turn contacted Avon Navigation Trust Chief Executive Clive Matthews. A request was then made to Head of Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service Nic Price to see if the MVS (who have their boats in Tewkesbury Marina) could reach the narrowboat and take everybody off to safety. Nic said “With the River Avon already 6 feet up and still rising we knew that we would have very little headroom under King John’s Bridge but using our Rigiflex dinghy Severn 1 we just squeezed underneath and after making two trips managed to get everybody ashore safely including Poppy the dog of course. The family had set off from their mooring on the Severn at Diglis near Worcester last week and intended to come onto the Avon heading for Stratford for a holiday but were

forced to take refuge at Tewkesbury when they were caught out with the rising water and strong currents after the recent rain.”

SEA CADETS HARD WORK PAYS OFF Tewkesbury Sea Cadets is an independent nautical based youth charity, who guides young people into responsible adulthood using the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. A major aspect of cadet-life is the friendly rivalry and competitions that occur between the 500 units across the United Kingdom. For over 70 years, Tewkesbury Sea Cadets has competed in the annual drill competition, which sees a group or ‘squad’ of cadets rehearse an intricate and complex marching routine, led by a senior cadet. Tewkesbury unit has a formidable reputation of success in this annual competition, but 2018 has seen history marked, with the squad winning the district competition, and also winning the area level competition, which means the team will now go on to represent the South West Area in national final in just a few weeks time. This is a monumental achievement, and is testament to the team’s hard work and dedication over the past few months. This is the first time many of the team members have entered this historical competition, and the experienced unit volunteers, who have given up much of their time free of charge, feel the team stand an excellent chance of success at the national final, which

ARMOUR AT THE ABBEY

Visitors to Tewkesbury Abbey on the first weekend in May (May 5th-6th) might think that they have been through a time tunnel and come out at the scene of the Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. On Sunday May 6th they will find the normally tranquil gardens of Abbey House transformed into a Medieval Camp at the time of the Wars of the Roses. They will find families, all dressed in period costume and living much as they would had at the time of the battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. Armoured knights will demonstrate their skills in hand to hand combat, archery and even firing a canon. Meanwhile their families will be carrying out equally authentic tasks the women may be cooking over open fires, making or repairing clothing, spinning and

weaving, or if the mood takes them, performing dances of the period. Even the children are involved, the girls, helping their mothers, the boys learning the skills of their fathers. Visitors are welcome to try their hand at archery - and possibly other medieval activities -under the careful eye of re-enactor with years of experience. On Monday May 7th the historic activity moves into the magnificent setting of Tewkesbury’s famous Abbey. There to a background of medieval music visitors will be able to watch the ritual

of the arming of a knight, and of the robing of a priest, with a full explanatory commentary, visit the rarely opened sacristy and the Clarence Vault - which houses the remains of The Duke of Clarence, brother of Richard 111 and talk to knowledgable and enthusiastic re-enactors, whilst the children try on scaled

down, light weight armour. Nothing could come closer to time travelling. Activities run from 12 noon to 4.30on both days. Entry is £5, or £7.50 for a two day ticket, available at the gate. Tewkesbury is off junction 9 of the M5, and the nearest railway station is Ashchurch for Tewkesbury.

A REPORT SUBMITTED BY PUMP 17 SKATE PARK YOUTH COMMITTEE

IT’S TIME WE HAD A NEW SKATE PARK IN TEWKESBURY Pump 17 (Skate Park Youth Committee) was founded on 12th October 2017 by 10 students from Tewkesbury School. Our dream is ultimately to have a new, bigger and better skate park for the whole of Tewkesbury and surrounding areas to enjoy. We understand a new skate park will need a new site, planning permission and could take many years and so we are also looking to improve what we already have at Priors Park. Priors Park is a popular site but it is becoming run down, very slippery and unsafe in the damp conditions. Pump 17 researched several other skate parks in Gloucestershire and have subsequently met with four Skate Park Designers to look at designs, quotes for a new park and how to improve what is currently at Priors Park. We now have a good understanding of the different designs and fundraising targets to work towards. On 15th February, we presented the designs to Cllr Cromwell and Cllr Greening informing them of our preferred designs. We have been invited to Tewkesbury Borough Council to do a small presentation and to take any questions on our chosen designs. RNLI Fun Day Sunday On Sunday 27th May, Croft Farm Water Park is hosting Fun Day Sunday, to raise funds for the RNLI. The event promises to be a great family day out, with lots of activities for all ages. Bring your wellies and join Stormy Stan on the Great Wellie Walk around the Lake, starting at 11am, or take part in races on the water, supervised by Croft Farm staff. If you want something less energetic, enjoy performances during the day from the Barnacle Buoys shanty singers, the Churchdown Male Voice Choir and local Morris Dancers. TOWN BAND POP-UP AT THE MUSEUM Most people in Tewkesbury will know of the Town Band. Maybe setting the pace in a parade, in a concert at the Roses or the Abbey or playing carols on the High St. But what do you know about the band, and brass banding generally? To find out a bit more Tewkesbury Museum is holding a small exhibition “Town Band Pop-up at the Museum” until 10 May. The exhibition has been curated by Hannah Benbow, museum volunteer and Town Band member. It explores the origins of brass bands in Tewkesbury; the first was in 1838, and by 1860 the Tewkesbury Rifle Corps Band were entertaining the public. But banding has its ups and down and it disap-

peared entirely from the 1930s to 1974, when the current band was formed “due to public demand” according to the newspapers of the time. The exhibition also looks at the instruments and what role they play in a band. The light tones from the cornets, the heavy rhythm (oompah, oompah) from the bass. And if you don’t know a flugelhorn from a euphonium, then this is the place to learn. Like earlier bands, the current Tewkesbury

Town Band has had its hard times too, but is now flourishing. It to not only runs the main band, but has a training band which teaches complete beginners, of any age. LOCAL CHARITIES JOIN FORCES FOR TEWKESBURY PROSTATE CANCER TEST The Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group charity and the Cheltenham branch of Lions International are teaming up once again to organise a free public prostate cancer blood test, this time at Tewkesbury School, just off Junction 9 of the M5 on the A438, on Wednesday 30 May. They’ve worked together successfully before, making more people aware of prostate cancer. At their last test event, over 430 men were tested, and more than 40 cases were picked up as needing further investigation for

prostate cancer, some of which led to prompt and possibly life-saving treatment. Some recent high-profile cases of well-known men being diagnosed with the disease, notably including Stephen Fry and Bill Turnbull, have

thrown some light on a subject that most men simply won’t talk about! Prostate cancer’s the most common cancer in men, and accounts for around 11,000 deaths in the UK every year. One in eight men will get it, but the risks are even

higher for men of African or Caribbean background, or with close family history of prostate cancer (father or brother). “Early detection’s vital”, says Roger Powell, trustee of the Cotswolds charity, “as in its early stages, prostate cancer may have no symptoms. So a quick blood test can be really worth having”. It’s not widely known that men over 50 can ask their doctor for a test, so not many do. The PSA blood test isn’t a diagnosis, but it’s a useful tool to tell whether further investigation for prostate cancer would be worthwhile. The Cotswolds Support Group suggests that men aged between 50 and 75 (or over 40 if a close blood relative has had prostate cancer) should certainly ask for a PSA test. “Or just drop in to our free public PSA test between 6pm and 8.30pm on 30 May” says Roger. “We’ll have experienced professionals to carry out the blood tests, and prompt confidential results will be sent out within a few days.” The Cotswolds Support Group’s volunteer-led by men who’ve all had prostate cancer, ably assisted by their partners, and works closely with the county’s NHS urology team, and national cancer charities. Its main aims are to support men and their families affected by prostate cancer, and to promote better awareness of the disease.

Monthly meetings are held at the excellent Maggie’s Centre in Cheltenham, often with an expert speaker. There’s also a relaxed

Welcome for new Alleycat Art Tewkesbury’s Project Alleycat have installed two new artworks to liven up the alleys and lanes of the town. And public reaction has been good. In Gravel Walk, a mosaic of the “Owl and Pussycat” has been installed. This was created by the Fairshares craftgroup, working with local artist Jo Teague. The work was supported by Adult Education, Gloucestershire. The Fairshares group have previously produced mosaics for the Abbey and Marina Court. Richard and Clare Mills, who donated the wall space said “We absolutely love it. Fantastic”. Meanwhile, in Tolsey Lane artist Maxine Williams has painted three panels depicting life in Cross House in medieval times.

Tolsey Lane has been a blot on the Tewkesbury landscape for many years. Broken windows in Cross House have been boarded up, graffiti has appeared, and what should be a main link between the High St and the riverside has become dowdy and off putting. The main paintings covers 3 panels. If the work is judged a success by residents and visitors, and doesn’t suffer from vandalism, Project

Alleycat will sponsor the painting of the remaining six window spaces and unused door. This should make that part of Tolsey Lane a small attraction in its own right. Ben and Flick Wiggins, who run “Naiads” shop on the corner of High St and Tolsey Lane are very proud of their new side windows, and see it as a definite improvement to the area. “Much, much better. We hope it can be

completed”. Reaction on Facebook has been overwhelmingly positive. And further good news alleywise, Gloucestershire Highways and Cllr Kevin Cromwell are working with Alleycat to implement a programme of improvements to alley footpaths, using traditional paving blocks. Trinity Walk is already well underway with Smith’s Lane to follow.

HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD If there is one thing that I really dislike in people it is the way in which some of them so easily and thoughtlessly lose their temper, writes David Slater. I was fortunate to have been brought up in a family where losing ones temper was just not considered a proper way of behaving. Indeed I remember my wise Dad would say “A still tongue is best in an argument.” As a teacher I never failed to be amazed at how easily children would “fly off the handle” and precious friendships would sometimes be irrevocably broken. As a Head teacher I noticed too how often parents would lose their tempers rather than put forward a reasoned argument. Perhaps it was the supposed builtin threat that they thought would carry the day. I wonder how many children lose their tempers with their parents

when they are not getting their own way OR how many parents lose their tempers with their children when they feel at a loss as to what may be the best thing to say. I call upon you to just think about what losing one's temper can mean. There was a young boy, but it could just as easily have been a young girl, who was always losing his temper. He lost it with his parents, his teachers, his friends..... with everyone he came into contact with. For him it was a natural response to anyone and everyone that he disagreed with. His father grew totally fed up with this type of behaviour and decided that it was time that the boy was taught that losing tempers was just NOT the right or acceptable way to behave. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he should hammer a nail into the fence. Continued on page 59

the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The father was not going to let him off lightly. He wanted this to be a lesson that the boy would remember. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said “You have done well, but look at all of the holes in the fence. You have to agree with me, the fence will never be the same again. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like each nail has done in the fence. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out and it won’t matter how many times you say ‘I’m sorry’, the wound will still be there.” Make sure you control your temper the next time you are tempted to say something you will regret later. Remember, every time you lose your temper your harsh words will create a scar. Far better to stay calm and reasonable when dealing with people. That way you stand less chance of causing lasting damage!
