The reserve was established at the end of 2013, and is now a great place for all Tewkesbury residents to visit and experience the wildlife and nature right on their doorstep. Over the last four years, work has been progressing to add river meanders, extend the reed beds and ponds, plant a community orchard, develop the beginnings of a wildflower meadow, pollard some of the trees and generally manage land which had been neglected for many years. The most obvious sign of change is the increasing bird population since reed beds were installed. In addition to the little egrets that regularly visit the reserve, there are now a couple of great egrets visiting as well. In all eighty different bird species have been observed on the reserve. Marina Court, in Trafalgar Road, has a ‘Community Hub’ offering a varied health and wellbeing programme. It includes innovative, preventative and enabling classes along with holistic therapies, learning opportunities and social events too. Any income generated is reinvested and means the scheme is always evolving to meet the changing needs of residents and the wider community. Over the last twelve months, funds raised have delivered an outdoor gym, a wildlife area with pond, table tennis table, and specially designed inclusive archery equipment. Residents have played an active part in fundraising for Marina Court; £20,000 in the past two years, including five grant awards for

outdoor activities for the wider community. Residents have also raised over £6000 for local charities including the Royal British Legion, MacMillan Cancer Support and Acorns Childrens Charity. Residents also knit for the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital neo-natal unit, make Twiddlemuffs for dementia sufferers, and teach their skills to local schoolchildren who visit regularly. These achievements show that, when enabled, people within Extra Care can bring a valued contribution to society. LaingBuisson judges commented that Marina Court was “A very well run Extra Care site. Excellent use of the community hub with a list of interesting and unusual facilities.”

ABBEY PREPARES FOR 900th ANNIVERSARY Roseanne McEwan, Brand Development Manager at Cotteswold Dairy, has been appointed as Chair of Tewkesbury Abbey’s new 20.21 Steering Committee. The committee will plan and execute events for the year-long celebrations which, will mark the 900th anniversary of the consecration of the Norman Abbey. They will run from October 2020 to October 2021. It will also be responsible for planning and executing events leading up to the year by actively engaging with local community and business groups. “Roseanne is wellplaced to chair our committee for the 20.21 celebrations as she grew up on the outskirts of Tewkesbury and her family business is Cotteswold Dairy, where she heads up all aspects of marketing,” said the Vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey, The Revd Canon Paul Williams. “Her late grandfather, Harry Workman, was a popular figure in the town and her father,

Roger Workman, is still well-known in the town within business circles and for his generosity.” Father Paul explained that it is Roseanne’s enthusiastic attitude that encourages others to get involved in the community. “She makes people aware of the importance of working together and has raised a significant amount of money for different charities on both an individual level and by facilitating those in business to get involved and see what a

difference donating money and goods can do and how this can impact on the lives of others.” Over the next four years, the committee will plan a number of events which will get people involved on both a personal and business level to assist the local community. DERBY DAY AT RIPPLE SPRING FETE Budding Lewis Hamiltons could kickstart their racing careers this month, by entering the Box Kart Challenge at Ripple Fete. Entries are now open for the soapbox derby, which will take place on a timed track at the village fete on Saturday 27th May (2-5pm). Entrants are invited to build their own nonmotorised karts, and compete in them for a prize on the day. The ‘Great Ripple Bake Off’ will also be held again this year. Those making their cakes will have an earlier start than the karters. Bakers should collect their ingredients from The Railway Inn at 10am, and return cakes for judging at 2pm.

Country market helps to top up Tewkesbury in bloom’s pot The ladies and gentleman of Tewkesbury's Country Market have raised over £140 in help top up Tewkesbury in Bloom's fundraising pot to brighten up the town with summer plants, writes Shelby Powell. Thanks to Rose, Sarah and Carol the team donated prizes for an Easter raffle to help gardening volunteers. The Country Market team meet every Friday morning at the Town Hall (except Bank Holidays) and you can pick up delicious homemade cakes, bread and biscuits, unique crafts and handmade items, plus plants and other locally grown or sourced produce including eggs. I am sure this new facility will bring enormous benefits to patients, as the GPs are now providing services in a purpose built centre. We all congratulate the GPs on their determination in seeing this project to completion. In my experience car parking for patients is always an issue at any Medical Centre.

ANIMAL MATTERS by Vale Wildlife Rescue

2017 SET TO BE A RECORD YEAR If this year continues as it has started it will turn out to be our busiest on record, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue at Beckford. It may settle down and revert to average numbers but my feeling is that it will continue to be busier than normal. So far this year we have treated more than 750 animals (420 birds, 317 mammals, 8 reptiles, 6 amphibians and 1 insect). Amongst this number have been 92 hedgehogs, 24 buzzards, 50 mallards, 23 badgers, 68 foxes, 17 roe deer and 16 robins. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the year, and in particular the busy summer months, pans out.

We moved to our site in Beckford in 1992 but we have never had any pools for the rehabilitation of waterbirds. His talk “Chasing the Silver Dragon” was largely about the Severn Bore which is formed when the rising tide moves into the funnel shaped Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary with the surging water forced upstream in a series of waves and can reach as far as Tewkesbury under certain conditions. On 8th April the Unit was asked to provide a Guard of Honour for the Mayor of Pershore and other VIP’s at the opening of new moorings at the Angel Hotel Pershore which had been built in a partnership with Avon Navigation Trust. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society I can still never understand how an architect could design this ugly building to dominate the High Street or how a council could permit it, writes John Dixon. Especially when a noted Medieval Building was demolished to make way for it. In 1881 Frederick Moore described it as “a house with a quaint gable, in which is carved an oak beam, with a floriated boss in the centre”. The Commission for Historical Monuments described that boss as a ‘Tudor Rose’. However this photo reveals that in the early 20th century a façade was built to hide the Medieval features – and the entrance to Bedford Court. Bob Sayers lived there from 1935-1937 and confirmed this: “The front door which typically opens into the best room with the windows either side. “The room ran the whole width of the house, with a massive

oak beam running the length of the room, i.e. parallel to the road. In the centre was an absolutely exquisite Tudor Rose carving. What a terrible loss when this was destroyed.” Bedford Court, named after a grocer and later fried fish-shop owner, had become famous because it was said to have been the location for Sally Watkin’s Cottage, featured in the popular novel, ‘John Halifax, Gentleman’. Home owners in the town competed to convince the tourists that their home featured in the book! When the area was demolished in 1965, the woodwork disappeared but stone floors, which were believed to have been originally part of the Abbey Cloister, was

returned to the Abbey to repair the Vicarage William Shakespeare, owner of an antique furniture shop, was much more important to us than the Bard - he sired our own Bill Shakespeare, who lost his life breaking power-boat records in 1971. I wonder if Boots realises the historical romance which lies beneath their modern floors. John Dixon

I thought that it would be a good idea to look at this in this month’s column ! I was born and brought up in a small Worcestershire town and for years, I suppose, I could have wondered who I was ( as an individual in my own right ). My dad was very well known and respected throughout the town so, well into my teens and early twenties, even, I was Joe Slater’s son. If someone met me they would say “ Ah, you are Joe Slater’s son”. I would smile and say that I was but I suppose, in a way, I should have had the courage to have said, “I am David and Joe Slater is my dad”. Sounds trivial but in many ways it did undermine what confidence I had in myself as an individual with personal worth. We all deserve to be recognised for who we are as individuals. It is easy to feel inferior. I almost said then it is easy to be made to feel inferior BUT the choice is ours as to whether we actually allow that feeling to creep in or not. Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. So why do we tend to try and be what all these people want us to be the parent your children want you to be ; the workman your employer

wants you to be ; the partner your spouse wants you to be……… Why? I think that the main reason is that we fear rejection. If we feel fragile in ourselves then rejection would be very destructive and hurtful. Do YOU feel scared of rejection ? Write down a few reasons why. Do it almost without thinking. It is vital to remember that in trying to be all things to all men you are bound to fail at some stage. It is absolutely impossible to please everyone. Sometimes it feels almost impossible to please anyone! The sooner that you actually realise this the better it is for you as you will stop wasting time and energy, physical and emotional, trying to achieve the impossible. Know your mind and life according to YOUR values, You may receive rejection but your strength is to cope with it. Remember that you are not in control as to how people think or speak or behave SO stop making yourself unhappy worrying about it. If you are faced with a rejection remember that it can be a very powerful source of personal learning. You will learn more from receiving the odd rejection than for not trying at all to succeed. This is a novel about prison life that brought to mind "The Shawshank Redemption" only due to its setting in a violent institution, where the main character Roscoe T Martin endures a sentence that sees him brutalised, but through which he survives. We learn about his life and why he is in prison, how his life became purposeful when he left the mine where his father worked to learn the new science of electricity. This becomes his life's work and love until his teacher wife Marie inherits her father's farm and with son Gerard, the family move back there. Marie dotes on her son, while Roscoe who is no farmer, cannot make the transition. But when the local power company installs lines some distance from the farm he connects their buildings, and the machinery and the farm prospers until tragedy strikes. Roscoe and his farm hand Wilson are incarcerated, but go very different routes. The crime and the sentences are something that Marie cannot accept, she ceases all communication with Roscoe and over the years fails to visit him despite his regular letters. We learn about Wilson's life only in retrospect, but the main action is Roscoe's sentence, the cruel guard, vicious cell mates, and Deputy Warder Taylor who is fixated on training hounds to pursue escaping inmates.

Roscoe is enrolled as a handler along with his duties in the prison library, where his literacy helps the illiterate Deputy achieve his end. After many years Roscoe and Wilson are reunited when Roscoe eventually is paroled, and he leaves the prison compound a partial invalid to be met by Wilson who takes him back to the farm. Here, over time, Roscoe learns what has happened to his family and Wilson's during his incarceration. He meets his now grown up son Gerard who was not allowed to visit his father, and the history of events is revealed to create a very fulfilling read. The book was long listed for the Man Booker prize in 2016, an accolade strongly endorsed on the front cover along with justified words of praise from some fellow authors. Rural life in America in the 1920 s set against a background of their penal system provides an excellent setting for this good read. It is an unusual story, enjoyable and rewarding. Unlike its neighbour, the Gwen Fitch Reserve, the John Bennett nature reserve has public access allowing walkers and ornithologists to observe a wide range of birds in the wetlands, writes Jack B. Walker. The land was given by Mrs Wimpy Bennett, who wanted to create a reserve in memory of her husband. Work began on creating it about seven years ago. Now that the lighter nights are with us, this walk makes a pleasant evening stroll. We shall start from the village of Great

Comberton and follow part of the 88 mile long Shakespeare’s Avon Way. This traces the river from its source to where it joins the Severn at Tewkesbury. There is no off-road parking in Great Comberton, so please park with care and respect to residents in the village street. It is probably less intrusive to park at the north end of the village, near the war memorial. From here, walk back up through this lovely village, and just before Waterbrook House, look for the Public Footpath sign to Nafford (1). The route is way marked with the ‘Shakespeare’s Avon Way’ logos as well as yellow arrows. Bear right down the path and follow the arrows across the fields for about three quarters of a mile, until you meet the road at Nafford (2). Walk past Nafford House and at the drive turn right (3) and follow the path down between the fences to emerge on to the river bank. Go over the bridge on top of the weir (4) and

cross Nafford Lock by the swing bridge, then follow the path across the small island. Cross the bridge over the second weir, (5) where the waters rush impressively beneath you. This is a popular spot for anglers and canoeists. Bear left along the path until you reach a gate on your right, with information boards about the John Bennett Nature Reserve (6). Follow the permissive path as directed, to reach the observation hide overlooking the wetland. As this is a ‘there and back’ walk, simply retrace your footsteps from this point.

When you return to Nafford Lock, note the wind-powered water pumps in this area. These are used to provide water for the wetland habitat. The two larger ones, closest to the weirs, feed the Gwen Fitch nature reserve (established in 2001) to which there is no public access. As you walk back from Nafford to Great Comberton, away to your right is the scarp side of Bredon Hill, dominated by Battens Wood. Please note: this walk should not be attempted when the river is in flood as the reserve will be under water!

ELLIE’S HAIR RAISING EVENT To mark the tenth anniversary of her brother David’s full recovery from cancer, Ellie Boskett (aged 23) has been growing her hair for the past twelve and a half months for it to be donated to The Little Princess Trust whilst also raising money for CLIC Sargent and Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal. It is now at a decent length for the charity to make a long wig and Ellie has been working hard to keep it wellgroomed and in good condition. The Little Princess Trust provide real hair wigs free of charge to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. Becky Robinson from the Blow Salon in Tewkesbury will be doing the honours of cutting it at private event on Saturday 13th May. To date Ellie has raised over £1800.

THE COUNTRIES NEWEST RAILWAY STATION, TO OPEN IN EARLY JUNE Volunteers from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway have painstakingly rebuilt the rail Halt that used to serve the Ancient Monument of Hayles Abbey near Winchcombe. The Halt was built by the Great Western Railway in 1928 when the Abbey ruins were first opened to the public and was closed in the 1960s. Today the new structure has been built in the same style with a wooden faced platform and with a replacement corrugated iron waiting shelter, identical to the original, which was rescued from the old railway station at Usk in Powys. The Halt is ideally suited for visits to Hayles Abbey and is on the route of the long distance Cotswold Way, and the Winchcombe Way walks, as well as Hayles farm shop and the interesting Hayles Church which is home to some rare Medieval wall paintings. KEEP SAFE SCHEME Two Partnership Board Members help back up the ‘Keep Safe’ Scheme, at Tewkesbury Leisure Centre. The Keep Safe scheme gives vulnerable people a short term safe place to go if they are feeling threatened or worried when out and about in their local town. Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire and local Keep Safe Advisors work in partnership to support young people with learning disabilities to go out and invite local businesses to register as ‘Keep Safe’ places. Shops, businesses and public buildings who are a ‘Keep Safe’ place will display the Keep Safe sticker in their window. People with learning disabilities can register to be part of the scheme and will be given a ‘I need help’ card to carry. The card will have telephone numbers for the Keep Safe place staff to call. Teresa Hemmingway, Keep Safe Advisor said “I am really pleased to see that Tewkesbury Leisure Centre has joined this countywide scheme. It is so important for community hubs/centres to be aware of vulnerable peo-

A change of chair at the Probus Club Tewkesbury & Bredon Hill Probus Club recently held their Annual General Meeting in Bredon Village Hall. TEWKESBURY FOOD BANK MAKING A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE by Jack Lowe Project Manager Jack Lower tells of the progress that has been made: Since 1st April 2016 and 31st March 2017, we have processed 480 vouchers which represented 692 adults, 410 children, making a total of food supplied to 1102 people. This represents 3,306 meals. This figure is up by nearly 400 people fed compared to the same period in 2015/16. These figures do not include the families and individuals supported by our Christmas Blessings and School Holiday meals projects, which would add significantly to this. For those interested in figures, you may also like to know that we received 8,896.24 kgs of food and gave out 10,302.45 kgs. That’s a lot of tins, packets and boxes to move! Our next session at the Touching Souls Tea Room at Tewkesbury Abbey is Sunday 7th May 2017. Anyone who can help with this event is most welcome. NEW APPLE TREES FOR TEWKESBURY HOSPITAL Helen Carver sent in this report from Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth group organised the planting of apple trees by the new doctors surgery, The Deveraux Centre, as a positive gesture for the environment, wildlife and people. The small area of land is owned by Gloucester Care Services. Julie Ellery, Matron of Tewkesbury Hospital has kindly agreed to the planting of 2 apple trees on the site and 1 in the hospital garden. They have been generously donated by Martin Hayes of the Gloucestershire Orchard Trust. The trees are organic. Dessert applesTyndenam Worcester early and Rajka. They are MM106 maidens so are small at the moment. Friends of the Earth is a charity that champions for the environment, started 40 years ago. Protecting nature so it can recover to sustain a healthy planet that can work for everyone. Therefore giving wildlife a chance to thrive and provide wild spaces for people to enjoy. The area is to the north of the Deveraux Centre near the cycle shelter. It is south facing. It is a remnant of the old Tewkesbury Hospital grounds.The hospital was built in the 1930’s on the land of Orchard House. This little area has 2 surviving apple trees from that orchard, both cookers. They are a part of history! The area appears neglected and wild. But this is why it is so important. Places like this are disappearing due to pressure of development. of the Earth want to support this urban wildlife refuge and at the same time maintain the heritage of the old orchard for people to see and be inspired. Helen Carver worked as a nurse at the old and new Tewkesbury Hospitals. She retired in 2014. She remembers this area. It was hidden away between the hospital kitchen and Trinity Hall. This hall borders the back of the site. It was built in the 19th century as a Methodist Church. Helen has asked the advice of Jo WorthJones, wildlife garden expert of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust on how to maintain the area for wildlife in the situation of a mini orchard. Therefore some of the monster brambles have been removed. But some will be left as so will Ivy and nettles as they provide nectar for Butterflies, Bees and Insects. Tortishell butterflies lay their eggs on nettles. The self seeded

Buddlia will remain, though under control as the flowers are a magnet to butterflies. In due course nectar and caterpillar food plants will be grown. Buckthorn for Brimstone caterpillars, Jack by the Hedge for Orange Tip butterfly caterpillars. Comfrey and Lungwort for early nectar source for Bees. Verbena Bonariensis, the flowers are loved by Butterflies for nectar. The emphasis is on Butterflies, Bees and Insects at the moment. Insects are vital for pollination to ensure plant health and productivity. They need support! It was a pleasure to observe 2 Holly Blue butterflies nectaring on the Ivy flowers and a Bumblebee on the rough grass during the warm sunny spell we had in April. Humphrey King traded from here, and remarkably the Large Golden Key that hung from the second floor corbel, still hangs there to this day, albeit, the other way round. Above the ground floor is the lettering H KING and to either side it seems as if Humphrey has used the space to display some of his goods. Today, the ground floor is occupied by the Halifax Bank.

Successful Martial Arts club celebrates 6th Birthday Tewkesbury’s successful Martial Arts club, White Tiger Martial Arts & SelfDefence Academy, celebrated its 6th Birthday on Wednesday 19th April. The chief instructor, Mr Paul Wanklyn a 5th degree Black belt said “I’d like to thank everyone who’s ever been involved in the club, students past and present, family and friends, Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner and other agencies for supporting us in our quest to offer a quality service to the community. I’d also like to thank Tara’s Creative Cakes for supplying us with a fantastic cake.” The club started off at Queen Margaret’s School in the town but quickly outgrew it. The recording and searching for missing persons is an area of police work which is going on in the county every day and it can be very resource intensive using specialist search trained officers, the police dog section and the police helicopter. The circumstances surrounding a disappearance can differ greatly and so too can the role of the police in a missing persons investigation. There could be any number of reasons behind a disappearance which is why you should contact the police straight away if you are at all concerned about the safety and wellbeing of the person who has disappeared. To do this, you can contact your local police station in person or by phone. You can report to your own local police station even if the missing person lives in another part of the UK. You can make a report to the police immediately – you do NOT have to wait until 24 hours after a disappearance. In an emergency you can contact 999. Once you have made a report, what the police do will depend on the circumstances of the disappearance and how much they consider the missing person to be at risk. They will assess the level of risk by considering the missing person’s age, the circumstances of their disappearance, whether this is out of character, and whether they need medication or treatment. The advice on this below should help you know what to expect, what questions to ask, and whether/how you should help in the search.

If the police assess that the missing person is at risk, they may decide to: • Search the missing person’s home or last known address and the area where the missing person was last seen • Attempt to make contact with them by phone, if they have a mobile telephone. • Conduct checks on their mobile phone or computer • Conduct house to house enquiries • Check local hospital admissions • Review CCTV footage • Conduct land and air searches, particularly in high risk cases • Co-ordinate media coverage and issue a press release to the local media appealing for help from the public. The police, or the family of a missing person, may contact ‘Missing People’ on 116 000 to request help with publicising the missing person’s picture through our poster and media appeals. In order for the charity to publicise a case, the person has to be reported missing to the police and they will always need to talk to the police to check our involvement is appropriate before launching an appeal. I hope that you never have the necessity to report someone as a missing person but please remember that there is a ‘Golden hour’ - and the sooner we start the search the better especially if the person is vulnerable. Preparations are well underway for this year’s Tewkesbury Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 14th May.

Runners will set off over the thirteen mile course at 10am, leaving the town along the A438 through Northway & Ashchurch, rejoining the A46 to Aston Cross. From there they turn left past the old army camp and up to Kemerton, before heading back to Tewkesbury
