Organisation is well advanced now for the weekend which will take place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May. The organisers aim to engage anyone and everyone who cares about the town and has a stake in its future businesses, schools, clubs and associations. The festival is put together by a group of like minded individuals. Three years ago they felt that a free festival would be just the thing to breathe life back into Tewkesbury’s event calendar. The key focus was to bring town and rivers together and celebrate Tewkesbury’s unique location. The first festival in 2014 was a great success and managed to raise over £3000 for local charities. Last year was just as popular - with added attractions. Macmillan Cancer, Avon Navigation

Bell Boat winners 2015 Trust, Town Mayor nominated charities and, for the first time, the Vale Wildlife Trust benefitted from the £4500 raised. This year’s event will continue to support previous charities as well Tewkesbury Boys Brigade who are celebrating their 60th anniversary. On Friday afternoon Tewkesbury School are holding a special sports event and riverside MV Conway Castle (which is the largest passenger

vessel operating on the River Severn) is calling into Tewkesbury for a special two hour evening cruise, with an on-board bar and bingo. Saturday will have children’s activities in the Watson Hall, and music around the streets before the Grand Parade (with a 1960s theme) starts at 3pm. Riverside there is a small funfair, boat rides to Twyning and demonstrations on the river by

the Maritime Volunteer Service as well as the Avon Navigation Trust. There will be a pop-up cinema in Theoc House. The film being shown this year will feature many local celebrities including the Human Cannonball and an archive interview with the late Harry Workman. In the evening there is a Northern Soul night at the Watson Hall. Sunday starts with Bell Boat racing on the river. There are also trips to Twyning, demonstrations and the grand finale boat parade in the afternoon. This year’s theme is pirates. On both days there are free Alley Cat Walks, which will lead you around six very different alleyways in the town : see if you can spot the cats! WE SALUTE YOU EVENT RETURNS IN JUNE Its back for its third year - Tewkesbury British Legion's ‘We Salute You!’ Show in aid of the Poppy Appeal - and also to mark Armed Forces Day. This year the event will be at the Watson Hall with an eighteen piece big band and guest singers with a licensed bar and vintage tea room. This is a 1940s themed evening with plenty of room to jive, a sing-along finale and plenty of opportunities for flag waving too. CB Chartered Accountants is bringing the spirit and camaraderie of the war years to Tewkesbury by sponsoring a nostalgic charity show at the town’s music hall. The charity show ‘We Salute You’ is being organised by the Tewkesbury Branch of the British Legion and takes place during Armed Forces weekend to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal, and to commemorate the centenary of The Battle of the Somme. The show will take place on Sunday 26 June and will feature nostalgic music performed by the Crescendo Big Band. The eighteenstrong band and accompanying guest singers will be presenting a

medley of 1940s tunes popular during the swing era and from the heyday of the big bands around the time of World War II. For more energetic members of the audience, there will be plenty of opportunities for jive dancing. The finale when audience participation is encouraged is a traditional war time sing-along with plenty of flag waving in the aisles. Organiser, Peter Godwin of Tewkesbury British Legion Club says “This is our annual fundraising event. It should be a really good evening and bring us closer to this year’s fundraising target towards the Poppy Appeal.

“We are very grateful to CB, Chartered Accountants for their support towards our appeal”. Armed Forces Day is a national event offering the public the opportunity to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. Bake off challenge Charge phones, tablets and electrical gadgets at Ripple Village Fete the easy way All budding Mary Berrys and Paul Holywoods out there take note: you can put your cake making skills to the test at this month’s Ripple Village Fete. ‘The Great Ripple Bake Off’ is just part of the fun that will take place on Saturday 28th May, from 2pm to 5.30pm. Entrants for the bake off have an earlier start. They may collect their ingredients from The Railway Inn at 10am, and return their cakes back for judging at 2pm. The fete will, of course, have all the usual attractions. There

will be a tombola, bring and buy sale, skittles, football nets and Traditional archery. refreshments include tea and cakes and a beer tent which will be serving guest real ales. Sporting events include rounders and a tug-of-war challenge between Ripple and the neighbouring village of Uckinghall. There will be a dog

show too - plus a ‘doggy dash’ race over 25 metres. Ripple’s Old Railway Station will also be open with a display of artefacts, as well as a video presentation showing the last train through the station. TEWKESBURY SCHOOL JOINS BIG WEEKEND - AND MORE TO BOOT As part of Tewkesbury School’s focus on community, its Sports Centre is joining in with Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend events this year. On Friday 6th May from 4-7pm, we are offering lots of fun activities for families to join in with at the school. These include a family swim, diving competition, trampolining, table tennis/tennis, badminton, multi-sports activities and a bouncy castle. The cost is just £2.00 per child to enjoy as many activities as they wish. Adults are free. All proceeds from the entry fee will be going to charity. There will be refreshments and snacks available to buy - so take your family along and join the fun. Tewkesbury School is also holding car boot sales in its main car park on a fortnightly basis. They will take place on Sundays from 9.30am until midday, with charges of £6 per car (£5 pre-booked) or £8 per van (£7 pre-booked). Dates are 1st, 15th and 29th May; 12th and 26th June; 10th and 24th July and 7th August. Proceeds go towards school fundraising fro improved student facilities. Wolf Border by Sarah Hall PB ÂŁ8.99 This very readable novel has two wolves in main supporting rolls, but this is so much more than a lupine story. Once again Sarah Hall uses her beloved Cumbrian countryside to write some beautifully descriptive scenes letting us, the reader feel the surroundings, sense the smells and enclose ourselves in the landscape. Rachel Caine, the wolf expert, is the main character. She is a local girl currently working in Idaho and recruited by Thomas, the far too wealthy Earl to help reintroduce wolves onto his estate. It is her knowledge of the animals in the wild and her efforts along with her small team, including a South African called Huib, that achieve the reintroduction of a pair of wolves who breed and roam the estate. There is local opposition that is initially demonstrated outside the estate, but this soon pales as the introduction progresses. Alongside this saga this novel expands to a much bigger book. Rachel's younger brother, Lawrence, someone she only really gets to know once she comes back

to the UK and, although he experiences addiction and marital problems, he is on hand to help Rachel cope with being a single mum, while her working partnership with the local vet, Alexander, develops. Alongside these relationships the memory of the siblings' mother perforates through the chapters. With the Scottish referendum distracting the politically active Earl, his family back story and estate worker jealousies, this book makes a great choice for discussion at any reading group. The project develops, the referendum progresses, Rachel's life evolves and the outcome of these storylines are for the reader to discover. This will be a pleasure as this is a very readable book. Pete Waterman OBE, pop impresario, show host and president of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) has launched a share offer to raise the £1.25 million the railway needs to complete its extension to Broadway. Broadway has long been a key ambition for the successful heritage railway to reach – but the track stops a mile short of the new station, which is being built on the site of the original demolished soon after it closed in 1960. The offer, called 'Broadway: The Last Mile' has already attracted investments of nearly £100,000. At Broadway station itself, launch guests saw the remarkable progress that has already been made entirely by volunteers. Two eight-coach long platforms are substantially complete, while a brand new signal box, modelled on that which once stood at Shirley, has been finished. The steel frame of the new station building is also complete while the footbridge span, from Henley-in-Arden, was installed only two days before the launch event.

Pete Waterman gives the GWSR share issue the thumbs-up

After touring the site, Pete Waterman told the audience that he was inspired by what has been achieved by this volunteer-run railway. “The £1.25 million target is entirely achievable,” he told guests including senior local councillors from Broadway, Worcestershire, Wychavon, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester. “Opening the station will not just bring a huge boost to the railway but to Broadway village too which is renowned the world over as a tourist destination. “And the train will be able to bring visitors from Cheltenham - without their cars.” Volunteer Chairman of GWSR Plc Alan Bielby emphasised the importance of preserving the Great Western Railway heritage of the line. He pointed out that the station building, while using modern building methods, would

be almost indistinguishable from the original while other materials were either originals recovered from elsewhere, including the footbridge and thousands of bricks sourced from former railway sites or close copies or original designs. The £1.25 million raised will go towards buying steel rail and ballast to close the one-mile gap, fencing materials, drainage and culvert repairs and additional

civil engineering work as well as complete the station building, platforms and platform furniture. Completion of the project would bring the railway's length to about 15 miles. Once finished, the railway has it long-term sights set on other major projects including extending south from the present Cheltenham Racecourse terminus into the town itself. The line could also be extended a further four miles to the north, to meet the Network Rail line at Honeybourne. The Share Offer is organised under HM Revenue & Customs' Enterprise Investment Scheme, which enables UK taxpayers to recover 30% tax relief. Minimum investment is £100. SPRING WARNINGS Now is the time of year that I usually highlight some of the dangers to our wildlife, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. As people are starting to spend more time outside, tidying and preparing their gardens for the coming (hopefully!) warmer weather. We have already received many calls about nesting birds and what can be done about them when cutting down trees and hedges. The basic answer is ‘nothing’. All birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and it is an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird whilst it is in use or being built or to intentionally take or destroy the egg of any wild bird. The maximum penalty that can be imposed for an offence this Act in respect of a single bird, nest or egg - is a fine of up to £5,000, and/or six months' imprisonment. Therefore, if you are planning on doing any garden work which could involve disturbing nesting birds, check the area thoroughly before commencing. Another danger to wildlife that has been highlighted to us very recently is that of bonfires (or in this recent case, the burning of pampas grass). Often favourite hiding/nesting sites for a host of wild animals, piles of garden waste are routinely set alight at this time of year and some people manage pampas grass by burning off the dead leaves in the early spring to

make way for this year’s growth. These actions can spell disaster for wildlife that have made these areas their home. A hedgehog was recently brought in to us suffering from horrific burns. Sadly it had died during the journey to the hospital.

The finder had set fire to the pampas grass in his garden without even realising that there may be something living in it. It was only when he heard high-pitched that he screaming realised there was an animal of some sort in the fire. He was understandably distraught but did everything he possibly could to help the hedgehog including putting cold water on the burns before covering with cling film and rushing it straight over to us. A tragedy for the hedgehog as well as a horrible experience for the gentleman involved. Always check carefully when undertaking any garden work to ensure that you will not be disturbing or harming any wild animals which may have made their home there. Many a Happy Return The Market Shops survived just a little longer than the older next-door building, the Happy Return Pub, writes John Dixon. It looks less that happy because it had ceased being a pub in 1917, when many pubs were closed with compensation - to prevent drunkenness hampering the war effort. That is ironic because it was so named after returning to selling beer in 1869, after being owned by tea-total Primitive Methodists from the 1830s. In later years, it was Edie Attwood’s Furniture Shop. The doorway to the left was the entrance to Waldron’s Alley – but it was no longer an alley, after it was blocked up to accommodate a livestock market behind. It had also been known as Rice’s Alley. THE SECRETS OF KOREAN SWORD ART HAIDONG GUMDO Tewkesbury-based martial arts club, Triumph Hwang Yong, celebrated their latest success after practitioners achieved their next promotion in the Korean sword art of Haidong Gumdo. The grading, held in Cheltenham, consisted of sword forms (Gumbubs), various basic movements involving sword cutting (begi) and stances (Se) developed to improve strength, stamina and hand eye coordination. This is tested by practitioners extinguishing flames with their sword (Mokgum). It should be noted that the mokgum is not allowed to touch the flame. The skill of the practitioner’s use of speed and power are critical in achieving this. Various types of swords are used such as foam swords (Anjeongum) for sparring, metal practice swords (Kagum) and eventually live blades (Jingum) for live cutting. The grading was conducted by the United Kingdom's Head Instructor, Harry Limer. This is the second grading of its kind to be held in the UK. It comes as the group prepares for their showcase demonstration of Haidong Gumdo at the UK Martial Arts Show in Doncaster in May. Promoted to Orange Belt (7th Keub) was Rachael Clifford, Ryan Vignaux, Asher Grant,

Dawn Emmery, Tom Simpson, Dean Pollard, Matthew EmmeryTabrett, Sally Parsley and John Foster. Also promoted to Yellow Belt (8th Keub) was Devin Leftley. Haidong Gumdo is a traditional Korean Sword martial art that has been established by Grandmaster and President Jeong-Ho Kim in 1982. Starting from 1961 president Kim received training in the sword arts at the CheonIn Temple in the GwanAhk Mountain. In 1982 president Kim began spreading the sword art he had inherited to the world under the name Haidong Gumdo. Haidong Gumdo can be enjoyed by anyone and has a lot of benefits for modern people who have such a busy lifestyle. The group trains at Apperley Village Hall, on the outskirts of Tewkesbury. CATS PROTECTION VOLUNTEERS RAISE MUCH NEEDED FUNDS On Saturday 2nd April, the local branch of the charity Cats’ Protection held a street collection in Tewkesbury High Street. The collection was organised by Mary Gardner, ably assisted by Joyce, Sheila, Isabel and Carol, all members of the branch. Despite the slightly chilly weather, a grand total of £113.40 was collected during the day and the proceeds will now go towards helping the charity’s activities in the Tewkesbury and surrounding areas. Mary and all the Cats’ Protection team are extremely grateful to the people of Tewkesbury for their generosity in donating to their cause. Cats’ Protection aims to find good homes for cats in need and locally, they rely on fosterers to care for homeless cats until a permanent home can be found. They also provide vouchers towards the cost of neutering cats to prevent litters of unwanted kittens, and

The new extension to Tewkesbury Bowling Club now open The extension to Tewkesbury Bowling Club opened on Saturday 9th April 2016, built with a lot of help from members and non members of Tewkesbury Bowling Club. Head of Unit Nic Price said “The lock was like a wall to wall carpet of branches, logs and vegetation which needed clearing. Working with Avon Navigation Trust Volunteers we were able to complete the job and by moving sunken objects from behind the lock gates this left the lock clear for Navigation. TWYNING COMMUNITY CHARITY GROUP PRESENTATION Twyning Village Inn was the centre of attraction on April 1st, with both Gary & Sandra Lawson, the landlords, being members of the Twyning Community Charity Group along with Jan Millet, Ian Southall, Jacky Harber, Jo Davies, Julie Baker & Shaun Roberts. KEMERTON LAKE NATURE RESERVE Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve is a great local spot for year-round easy walking. The arboretum provides cool shade on warmer days, and shelter from Spring rain too. There’s also much to interest nature lovers - wildfowl on the lake and deer in the woods. I’ve even seen a polecat here!

Distance: approx. 3.5 miles, flat Car Parking: car parks in Bredon village Public transport: 540 bus route (not Sundays). Refreshments: Royal Oak or Fox & Hounds in Bredon; The Crown Inn at Kemerton

The arboretum, managed by the Kemerton Conservation Trust, has a variety of trees from all over the world as well as indigenous species. To start the walk, park in one of the car parks on the B4079 near Bredon Village Hall. The 540 bus from Tewkesbury to Evesham also stops nearby. Leave the car park and walk along the road towards Kemerton. When you reach the drive on the right (which leads to Meredith’s Nurseries - (1) walk up it and pass to the right of the greenhouses. Go over a small footbridge (2) and follow the path around the edge of a plantation, keeping the hedge to your left. When you reach the next track (3) turn left and then take the stile on your right into the Park Field (4); follow the direction arrows across the field to a road. The house opposite you is Kemerton Court. Go through the gate (5), cross the road, bear slightly left and take the gate into the orchard opposite.

Early morning sun, Kemerton Lake Walk over to the opposite side and go through the gate on to the road (6). Turn right and walk down the lane, passing the church and Upper Court on the left. This attractive Cotswold stone house has been featured in the TV series ‘Father Brown.’ Carry on past the Old Manor and several black and white thatched cottages. Eventually the lane bears sharply right, then meets Kinsham Lane. At the T junction turn right (7) and look for the sign on the left to Kemerton

Lake Nature Reserve. Walk down the track between two hedges until it meets the same track you were on earlier. Turn left (8) and walk towards the wood, which you will enter via a kissing gate. Walk through the trees (there is a hide on the left looking over the wetlands) and after a short distance you will emerge by the lake, where there are good views of the wildfowl on the large expanse of water. Continue along the narrow path between two wire fences and go

through a kissing gate to enter the arboretum proper. There are some information boards which tell you about the history of the reserve and the flora and fauna you might see here. Turn left along the broad path: there is a map of permissive paths by a bench ahead on the left, which shows you which parts of the arboretum have public access. You may care to visit some of these but do note that dogs are not allowed in other parts of the arboretum. (Personally, I prefer to retrace my steps from here to point 8, then carry straight on to reach point 3 as it means less distance is walked along the road.) But to carry on with the circular route, turn right and take the public footpath (opposite the bench and sign- 9) and walk down the edge of the field keeping the hedge to your left. Upon reaching the road (B4079) turn right (X) and walk back into Bredon village. At the Tjunction turn left to return to the car park.

TEWKESBURY’S NAVAL LINKS WITH BATTLE OF JUTLAND The commemoration the Centenary of the Battle of Jutland, (31 May to 1 June 1916) will mean a lot to our esteemed Sea Cadets but, in terms of the war, the battle did not make a huge impact on Tewkesbury, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. The role of the Royal Navy in World War I also seems paradoxical. In 1914, one of the major causes of tension was the ‘Race’ to build revolutionary battleships called ‘Dreadnoughts’. However, the anticipated decisive naval battle did not materialise. Although the Navy was regarded as the ‘Senior Service’, only 50 of the 689 Tewkesbury volunteers joined the Navy and, of those who did, many were deployed into the Royal Naval Division – as infantrymen. Only four Tewkesburians lost their lives serving with the Navy and only one of those was killed in action. None was killed at Jutland. William Halling (pictured) was the one killed in action at Coronel in 1914; Charles Simons was taken ill during the battle of Dogger Bank in 1915 and Frederick Raggatt died of illness in 1919. George Eagles was killed in Gallipoli, as

an infantryman. At last, in 1916 the Germans provoked the naval conflict that it had desired since August 1914, when the two fleets met at the Battle of Jutland, just west of Denmark.

As far as we know, there were only a few Tewkesbury partici-

pants; Warrant Electrician T. Brotheridge was “not in the thick” of the battle. The most graphic recall was from Jesse Collins on HMS Colossus who wrote to his Holy Trinity Headmaster: “We saw several German battleships and cruisers sinking... (we are) safe and sound”. He concluded that the “British Navy is still alive”. The Tewkesbury Record hailed it as “Probably the Greatest Naval Battle in History”. The Register was a little more sober when, a week later, it claimed a “Great Fight at Sea..... Enemy driven home”.

TOGETHER TO WIN AWARDS!

Tewkesbury Arts & Drama Society (TADS) teamed up with Tewkesbury YMCA Movie Makers to create an entry for this year's Gloucester Inter-Club Film Competition at the end of March, and came away very pleased with the trophy for second place. Actors Geoffrey Guy and Marianne Gaston, under my direction, had prepared a performance of Geoffrey Guy's original one act play, Culinary Solution for a TADS fundraising event earlier in the year. Having previously worked with the Tewkesbury YMCA Movie Makers as an extra in last year's entry to the film competition, I thought that they might be interested in producing a film of Geoffrey’s play. Matt Butwell, from the Movie Makers set to work creating storyboards of the scenes in the play, deciding how to adapt it from stage to screen, and other members of the group organised locations and technical equipment. Filming took place over a couple of weekends, ensuring that members of both societies were able to attend. From hiding gnomes in the background of each shot, to having to dig into cold stew and dumplings for the tenth take, lots of fun was had by all. As Sandra, the wife in the play, says emphatically, “It’s nice doing things together, isn’t it?” That’s certainly true, and we hope to continue our partnership in the future. In addition to this TADS were also very pleased to receive the Worcestershire One Act Play Festival Award for Best Comedy and a nomination for Best Set, in the annual competition at the Norbury Theatre, Droitwich in March. This was for another original play, this time written

by Gloucestershire Poet Laureate, Brenda Read-Brown, and entitled, Rocks Off. TADS are very proud of being able to boast two award winning original playwrights within the society. TEWKESBURY BOYS BRIGADE CELEBRATE 60 YEARS Tewkesbury Boys Brigade held a reunion on the 9th April celebrating the work of the troop over the last 60 years. Founder Colin Durrant was able to attend and members from every decade, Brian Smith (former Captain), Tony Dimond, M Francis, F Francis, Jim Easta and Andrew Baldwin (current Captain. The day was a great success and we had members from every decade of the Company

in attendance and recounting stories of past camps, competitions and adventures. Displays of old uniform, badges and photographs were enjoyed by current members looking at how their predecessors looked in years gone by. An appeal for a new Company Colour was launched at the event

and ÂŁ225 was raised towards the ÂŁ600 cost of replacing the 58 year old Colour currently in use. Further celebration events are planned with an Old Boys skittles night, the Display & Awards in Tewkesbury Abbey on 18th June, a special church parade in December along with an Old Boys Band being

organised. New website encourages Tewkesbury families to learn more about their children’s centres A network of popular projects have made it even easier for local families to seek support with giving their children the best possible start in life. Barnardo’s has created a new website to provide a single source of information for to all of its children’s centres in and around Tewkesbury. The projects, managed on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council, provide support and advice to local parents and carers of under5s. RUBIES ROCK AROUND TEWKESBURY Back in the early 1960’s, two of the most popular groups in and around Tewkesbury were The 3A’s plus B and RJ & The Helions. Fifty years on, one of the 3A’s founder members, Des Avery, is still drumming with ‘The Rubies’.

In 2002 Des decided start and run a band once more, so he contacted the ex lead guitarist from 3A’s, Bob Perry and a couple of friends he’d made in the intervening years and formed a band called ‘Halcyon Days’ which morphed into a band called ‘The Good Evans Band’, with both a female and a male vocalist, who was none other than the late Richard Hughes, vocalist from 3A’s. The band morphed once again, into Brides’. ‘Rikshaw ‘Rikshaw Brides’ ran very successfully for four years or so, until Richard, sadly passed away in October 2012. Des kept the band going as a trio until March 2013, but it somehow wasn’t the same without Richard, who’d been a close friend for 48 years. After a break from music totally, he formed ‘The Ruby Ray Band’ which is where Bill Treen re-appeared. The 3A’s were well remembered by Bill from the 1960’s. ‘Rickshaw Brides’ played at The Roses in the tribute evening for Richard Hughes after he passed away. Bill also did a song, and at the tender age of 61 was asked by Des ‘Do you want to join our band?’! After mulling it over, Bill agreed and joined. After various ups and downs, ‘The Ruby Ray Band’ became ‘The Rubies’ with the talented Tasha Styles joining as vocalist, both Bill and Tasha being local to Tewkesbury. The five piece covers band play songs from the 1950’s to the present day. They’ve recently been joined by bass player Mark George.

Guitarist Joe Simpson who lives in Malvern came down from Liverpool where he served in the fire service, his claim to fame is that he actually knew the ‘fireman with the hour glass’ in The Beatles' ‘Penny Lane’, as he was then stationed at Penny Lane fire station. The next local Rubies gig is at The Wheatpieces on Friday 6th May - followed by an appearance at the Railway Inn, Ripple, on Saturday 28th May. Six years since it began, the Tewkesbury Walking for Health scheme continues to be popular with local people who want to take part in short social walking around our beautiful town. The scheme is run by local volunteers Rosemary, Duncan and Jean with help from Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Sports Development Officer, Neil Meynell. All the volunteers are fully trained walk leaders and routes are planned and riskassessed to suit the needs of the group. The walks are easily paced, they last around 60 to 90 minutes and are for those who may want to discover the benefits of walking for the first time or have experienced periods of inactivity. A newly introduced short walk is also now available for those who maybe recovering from a recent illness, medical treatment or simply those who want to start

off at a very relaxed level. Neil said: “The benefits of walking are endless. Walks such as these can help your heart and lungs work better, lower your blood pressure, help you lose weight, reduce stress and keep your joints, muscles and bones strong. Rosemary and her team have also worked hard at making the group fun and socia-

NEW CYCLE EVENTS FOR THE YOUNG Joseph O’Hara is the Head Coach of Cheltenham Tewkesbury and Winchcombe Youth Cycling Club (formerly Tewkesbury Cycling Club) and is organising a race on the 7th of May from 10am. This is an open event run under British Cycling 'Go-Ride' rules aimed at getting novice riders racing. This will start with the under 8s race at 10am and finish with the under 16s race at approximately noon. The second (and perhaps more photogenic!) are some interschool races that are organised for the 24th and 25th of May. On the 24th there will be some infant races on Mitton school field, including some reception classes that we have been working with all year to teach them to ride their bikes. The races on the 25th will be year 3 and 4 pupils on Tirlebrook school field. Both of the events will run from 45pm.

A STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING A Tewkesbury Book Shop is supporting a story tellers garden at this year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. For various reasons beyond the organisers’ control, money from a number of sources is not available to them this year. Organiser Peggy Clatworthy mentioned the matter to a friend, Karen Brennan, who runs Bookworm in the High Street. The independent book shop sells donated books to raise money for various local charities, and Karen decided to donate £500 to the event. Both of them felt it would be suitable to use the money to fund a story tellers garden, where children can take a break from the noise

and bustle of the festival, and listen to traditional tales told by two professional story tellers. The flowers for the garden are being provided by Hoo House Nursery Peggy said, “We are

very grateful for Karen’s generosity- the story tellers garden is a very special part of the event.” This year’s medieval festival takes place on July 9/10 on fields off Lower Lode Lane.

WARNER’S BUDGENS WOWS IN WINCHCOMBE The new Warner’s Budgens store was officially opened in Winchcombe on Thursday 14th April to great applause. Residents gathered to show their support as store owner, Guy Warner, was joined by the chairman of the town council, Jim Mason and three competition winners from Winchcombe Abbey Primary School to cut the ribbon at 10am, signalling the start of trading. The three primary school pupils, Ruby, Joanna and Edward won a competition to design a cake topper for the event, and each saw their winning designs top three celebration cakes, made especially for the opening. A bottle of prosecco was awarded to the first 50 shoppers through the tills.

Warner’s Budgens is an independently-owned store that is committed to supporting local producers and the local community. In-store, you’ll find food and drink from over 40 local producers, including beer from Goffs Brewery and fruit and juice from Hayles Fruit Farm, both based in Winchcombe.

Bouyed on previous paintings he has done, which include Richard III, Shaun has now started producing portraits of William Shakespeare. Now showing his works at Vintage Replay, Church Street, Tewkesbury, a small production line has begun. Shaun points out that he was inspired by a link between the Bard and Tewkesbury as his decendents lived in the town and a headstone for John Shakespeare Hart can be seen at Tewkesbury Baptist Church.

ISLA’S WALKING DREAM On the 6th May, 24 Staff are aiming to complete the 3 Peak Challenge to help raise money to help make a little girl’s dream of walking come true. Isla is 3 years old and after being born 12 weeks early, she developed Cerebral Palsy. Isla is unable to sit, crawl, walk or stand unaided. The money they raise will help fund an operation in America, which will vastly improve Isla’s quality of life. It will enable her to have more control of her legs, therefore leading to a more mobile, pain-free life and help her achieve her dream of walking! The 3 peaks was suggested by Roseanne, Brand Development Manager at Cotteswold Dairy and in preparation, she has walked each of the peaks individually. ‘Walking them one at a time is difficult enough, let alone the logistics of getting from one peak to the next and all the travelling involved in getting to each of them’ she explains ‘we also think it’s a great

Away from the fighting many re-enactors and their families will live for the weekend in living history camps where you are welcome to visit them. Even the Plantagenet King Edward, and his rival, Queen Margaret of Anjou, welcome visitors to their sumptuous camps. Away from the battle site there is a big and bustling medieval market, full of leather, metal and wood workers, costumiers, jewellers, potters and sellers of all kinds of exotic and unusual goods. Minstrels, jesters, stilt walkers and other characters will be found around the field. A dancing bear, a falconer and even dragons may be seen. Children can enjoy learning simple circus skills, or taking part in historically themed arts and crafts in the Bright Knight Tent - or a quiet

break at the magical Story Tellers Garden. This year, we have a visit from Mad Cap Theatre- who will be performing at various sites. The large beer tent with its wide range of real beers and ales, and for a real taste of history, mead, will have live music all day, and possibly a visit from the lovely gypsy dancers. Hunger pangs can be taken care of by a wide range of caterers. Entrance to the festival is free, with a small charge for parking, but please be as generous as you can to the bucket collectors, putting on an event like this is expensive, but we want everyone to be able to join in. The festival opens at 11am both days, with battle at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. When it closes at 6pm on Saturday the fun moves into town, for a

very tongue in cheek recreation of the capture, trial and beheadings of the fleeing Lancastrians. This is followed by the peaceful service of Complin, held by candlelight in the beautiful Abbey. Sunday sees our large Carnival style parade make its way up the High Street and Church Street on its way to the festival site, starting at 11.15. Tewkesbury is about two miles from junction 9 of the M5 and the festival site is signed from all major entrances to the town, please follow the signed route, it has been designed with safety in mind. This particular burglary happened in the middle of the night whilst the occupants were upstairs asleep. The victims were woken as the thieves were leaving and were obviously very frightened. My request from this is to please report anything suspicious. I am fairly confident most good citizens would dial 999 if they saw anyone walking down the road in the middle of the night carrying a flat screen television however there are many things you can do to improve your neighbourhood by looking out for each other. Here are a few ideas you might put into practise to improve your street or road : Be on good terms with your neighbours, this makes the community friendlier and the area a safer place to live.

Consider your neighbours lifestyle, get to know what they do for a living if they work nightshifts quiet mornings will be important to them. Similarly if they have young children quiet evenings will be very important. If you plan to have a party or barbecue let your neighbours know in advance or invite them along. When you park your vehicle , be sure not to block a neighbours access or make them have to pull out of a very tight space. Take care not to over-rev the engine of your car or motorcycle in the early morning or late at night. Take care not to slam car doors or make excessive noise when getting home late. Finally be friendly to any new neighbours moving into the community. I hope that these tips will be of benefit but above all if you see anything suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously

UPHILL MOTOR RACING RETURNS TO PRESCOTT Motor sport enthusiasts have another thrill in store as cars take to Prescott Hill for ‘La Vie en Bleu’ this month. The famous hillclimb course plays host to classic French and Italian cars for a special event on the weekend of Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May. Prescott will be transformed in celebration of fine French and Italian automobiles, themed entertainment, trade stalls and visiting car clubs. A man had taken the day off work to have a look round a newly opened animal park as he loved animals, especially the majestic elephants. When he reached the elephants it was actually the time that the keepers were moving them from one part of the park to another. He was amazed that each animal just had a small rope tied to its front leg rather than tough chains. These elephants were powerful animals and it was obvious to the man that if they wanted to break free then they could easily do so at any time as the ropes were so flimsy. The amazing thing was that at no time did they even make an attempt to do so. He was so amazed that he passed comment on it to one of the keepers in charge. " That's so easy to explain," said the keeper. " When the animals are very young and much smaller we

use the same size rope to tie them. At that young age the rope is actually strong enough to hold them. As they grow up they grow up with the thought in their mind that they cant break away. It is a sort of conditioning. So, they never try to break free." The man was amazed. These animals could break free at any time but because they believed they couldn't they were actually stuck right where they were. Just like the elephants, how many of us go through life holding on to some belief or other that we cannot do something simply because we had tried once before and failed. If we decide to have another try now the result may well be different. We may succeed. FAILURE IS SIMPLY A PART OF LEARNING. WE SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP THE STRUGGLE IN LIFE. SUCCESS MAY WELL FOLLOW !

" My son and I are on our way home from the hospital now. We have been going there for years as my son has had severe problems with his eyes.
