TOWN BUZZED OVER THE ‘BIG WEEKEND’ Thousands of locals and visitors turned out to throng the streets of Tewkesbury for the first ever ‘big weekend’ - held over Easter. The organisers of th weekend were delighted with the turn-out for the first event of its kind in many years. Everyone enjoyed the parade, entertainment, fairs and events in and around the town. BECKFORD’S OPEN VILLAGE WEEKEND Beckford is holding an Open Village weekend this year on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June. During the afternoon on these two days many village gardens will be open for you to visit and enjoy in all their floral splendour. In addition to the lovely gardens on display, the extraordinarily beautiful twelfth century Church of St John the Baptist will be decorated with flowers. There will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy refreshments; afternoon teas, home-made cakes, ice creams and a champagne bar will all be available. Other attractions throughout this weekend include a plant sale, steam engines, the stunning model of Beckford church, classic cars and

vintage Airstream caravan, historic radio collection, local crafts, and an exhibition of old photographs. For the sports minded, there is also tennis and croquet, plus the opportunity to visit the famous Beckford Silk centre. The ticket price is £5 (under 12's free) and this provides admission to the open gardens and access to all the attractions. Parking is free. Funds raised will go toward the upkeep of the village church.

Double celebration at Mitton Manor Pre-School There was a double celebration for staff, children and mums at Tewkesbury’s Mitton Manor Pre-School recently. All mothers of preschool children were invited along to the hall in Carrant Road, where the children went on to the stage to show pictures they had painted of their mums, and to sing special Mother's Day songs. “On the same morning, we also surprised one of our staff, Jill Croker, who has completed 21 years working at Mitton Manor PreSchool, said administrator Ali Jones. “Jill started working with us in 1993. We arranged for her family and friends to come

Bredon is once again this year hosting a Flower Festival centred on St Giles Church where the theme will be 'Books in Bloom'. It will take place on the weekend of 27th29th June. In addition to church displays there will be open gardens in Bredon and on the Saturday and Sunday there will be an art exhibition in the village school hall. Creative Writing Workshop: The Importance of Setting Gloucestershire writer, John Moore, fictionalised his beloved Tewkesbury as the town of Elmbury and this setting is fundamental to some of his best loved books. Gloucestershire-based Andrew Taylor, is one of this country’s leading crime writers, and the John Moore Museum is delighted to announce that he will be holding a three hour creative writing master class workshop on Saturday 10th May 2014. The focus will be on the importance of setting in a novel.

JOBCENTRE MOVES TO COUNCIL OFFICES Tewkesbury’s Jobcentre has relocated in a move that will add another vital organisation to Tewkesbury Borough Council’s public services centre. The Jobcentre, which was previously located on Church Street in Tewkesbury, moved into the borough council’s offices on Gloucester Road last month.
NEW LINE DANCING CLASSES FOR TEWKESBURY New Liners is a Line Dance Class which is taking place once a week in Tewkesbury, which has been put together by Billy Wells from Brockworth. Billy has been line dancing for twelve years, and has set up the new classes for anyone over the age of sixteen. Severn Unit MVS Exercise at Port of Bristol Members of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service recently took part in a very interesting table exercise at their last visit to the Emergency Marine Centre at the Port of Bristol. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We attend visits to the EMC on a regular basis which gives our volunteer members an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the equipment available in the room. “This familiarisation stands us in very good stead when we are invited to take part in exercises with other departments and if there is a real incident. “At our visit last month our own Port Liaison Officer, Peter Collins, planned an imaginative oil pollution incident involving a collision between the dredger the Welsh Piper and the Cable Layer Tyco Resolute. “We were joined by Deputy Haven Master Peter Stickland in the role of Incident Controller, which gave Peter and ourselves a good opportunity to work together for the first time.”

BUSINESSES SET TO BENEFIT FROM RATE RELIEF Around 1000 retail businesses in Tewkesbury Borough are set to benefit from a government grant to help subsidise business rates. Small shops, pubs and eateries. with a rateable value of less than £50,000 will receive up to a £1,000 discount on their business
rates for both this year and the next. Tewkesbury Borough Council will be administering the relief, and it expects approximately up to a 1000 businesses could benefit from the scheme, which was applied last month for the 2014/15 financial year.

Armour at the Abbey An exhibition of Armour and other living history is to be held in Tewkesbury Abbey over the May Bank Holiday weekend. On Saturday 3rd and Monday 5th May, visitors can meet King Edward IV, and members of his retinue, watch knighting ceremonies and hear about monastic life at the time of the Plantagenets. There will be a display of copes and vestments, illuminated manuscripts and a chance to see a scribe at work. There‘s also a rare opportunity to see the original 1502 Indenture signed by Henry VII, which calls for Masses to be said for the fallen of the Battle of Tewkesbury 1471. On Sunday 4th May, from 1-4pm in the Abbey House Garden there are archery demonstrations, knights in hand-to-hand combat, a living history exhibition and Medieval encampment. AB Severn Rowing Club sixteen year olds Jenna Roberts and Danny CasseyGurney have been selected to represent the West Midlands at the British Rowing Junior inter-regional regatta in Nottingham this month. Both will compete in the single sculls. The regional trial was held over a 2,500 metre course at Worcester in three divisions. Competing in different crews in each division, Danny won two gold medals and Jenna one gold and two silver. Continuing a remarkable run of success AB Severn Rowing Club had an excellent day of competition against the best crews the region had to offer. METAL DETECTING - with Stuart Borley
HAVE YOU GOT A LIGHT MATE? This month, we feature a variety of relics found recently in and around Tewkesbury by Stuart Borley and his metal detector. The first item is an early brass petrol lighter, which, when found, the sleeve lid came off easily to reveal a wick which was in useable condition. With a small amount of work the lighter could easily be made to work again. The loss of this item years ago must have been an annoyance to the smoker who lost it. The second item is an English Groat dating from between 1272 and 1307 AD, and made from silver. The value of the coin was four English pence and it finally disappeared from English currency in the 1880's. The condition of
this find is remarkable for its age and time in the ground. Finally Stuart holds a
mystery brass decorative item, can any readers suggest what it may be?

There is much to enjoy at Tewkesbury Bowling Club Tewkesbury Bowling Club was established in 1828 by the Monks and was played behind the Bell Inn. In 1976 the Club moved to Gander Lane, its present address. An invitation is extended to anyone, any age who is interested in playing Bowls to come along on Sunday 4th May from 10.00am to 4.00pm when members will be available to give advice and help regarding playing. Rod Trower on 01684 294601 or come to the Club on the day where you will receive a warm welcome. The Club have a Ladies Team, which plays in a number of Competitions in the Gloucestershire League, a Men's Team who play in the North
Gloucestershire League and County 2-Rink and Tewkesbury won League 2 in 2013 and have been promoted to League 1 in 2014. The Club also plays Mixed Games (Ladies and Men) mainly at the weekends against other Clubs. The Club is also involved in inter-Club Competitions over the summer months culminating in a Finals Weekend at the end of September. Janet Bishop captains the Ladies Team and Dave Boulton captains the Men's Team and they are responsible for selecting players. The Club organises
social events including barbecues during the summer, which proves to be very successful amongst its members and friends. The Bowling Green itself is tended by Jim Booth and a team of assistants. Throughout the winter season, when the green is closed, indoor Short Mat is played by some members with teams in the 1st and 3rd Divisions of the Gloucestershire League. The Club is hoping to extend its premises in the near future, subject to planning permission. A great deal of maintenance work at the Club is undertaken by some of its members who do
the work voluntarily. This is very important to keep the Club in good order as well as keeping the expenses down. Trower, Rod Chairman, says that he has been Chairman since 2009 and he is very proud of the Club and its members and would encourage anyone who is interested in Bowls to come along on the 4th May.

SUMMER HOLIDAY FUN IN CLEEVE This year’s Bishop’s Cleeve Street Fair, to be held on Sunday 1st June, will have a ‘summer holiday’ theme. The popular annual fair will celebrate the many kinds of summer holidays from the British seaside to Caribbean fun in the sun with Jamma Steelpan. Many old favourites are back such as the teddy bear parachuting from the church tower, the fun dog show, scouts assault course, display of vehicles in the grounds of Cleeve Hall. A firm favourite is Punch and Judy. Fair ground rides. Some new attractions include Donkey rides at the Tithe Barn Being a seaside holiday theme don't forget to take home a limited edition stick of ‘Bishop’s Cleeve Rock,’ specially produced for the day. There will be plenty of music for all tastes, and dancing in the streets with pupils from Dance Tec and Danceworks. Tewkesbury Swimming Club (TSC) turned out in force at this years County Junior Swimming Championships held throughout the first three months of 2014 coming 6th in the overall medal table. Over 24 swimmers qualified for the championships entering over 200 races. Notable performances were achieved by: Becky Sheppard: 15 yrs age group won gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke setting a NEW county record. Abi Rawlings: 14 yrs age group won gold in the 50m, 100m and
200m breaststroke. Matt Benson: 14 yrs age group won gold in the 50m & 100m breaststroke. Izzy Compton: 16 yrs age group won gold in the 100m & 400m individual medley aswell as gold in the 100m & 200m backstroke. Faye Jones: 17 yrs age group won gold in 50m, 200, & 400m
freestyle aswell as gold in the 200m fly. Eve Heeley: Eve attended her first ever county championship and won Gold in the 10 - 11 year old 50m Freestyle. TSC is a friendly club who is always looking to

An unexplained piece of vandalism has focussed our attention on the state of the wall, which divides the market/car park from Station Street, writes of John Dixon Tewkesbury Historical Society. The wall is all that remains of the much higher wall, which was built in about 1840 to protect Station Street from the railway itself. It was the branch line from Ashchurch to the Station on the High Street and, in between Oldbury Road and the Maltings (now a retirement complex), was the depot that enabled locomotives to be arduously prepared for the next day’s work. In the photograph, above, supplied by Geoff Denwood, we can see the wall, which was then twice as high, but which curved round to enable the rail tracks to cross Oldbury Road to the left of the gap in the modern wall. The photograph also reveals the ‘blind side’ of the houses in Spring Gardens. They are now long demolished - but the wall survived the closure of the line in 1961. Part of the wall still has the iron fittings for tethering horses.
We are now intending to make sure that the wall is preserved whatever fate befalls Spring Gardens as it is a reminder – along with the section in the Tesco Car Park - of an important part of the Town’s History. By the time you read this, we hope the damaged wall will have been repaired by the owners, the Borough Council.

May is National Watersports Month and Sail and Paddle @ Croft Farm Water Park in Tewkesbury are hoping to get 50 people out on the water on RYA Push the Boat Out weekend.
The vehicles were made from pressed steel a little in the style of traditional car construction, which made them very tough. This 1970's style camper with its original box, turned up at Tewkesbury's Church Street Auctions for inclusion in the forth-
coming toy and collectables sale on June 26th. In remarkable condition this vehicle comes with a fold out awning, male and female campers and the family Dog. It is sure to attract a fair amount of interest at this popular regional sale.
On 17 and 18 May, the club will be opening its doors and inviting people of all ages and abilities to come along and have a go at windsurfing and sailing. Sail and Paddle will be one of the many sailing clubs and centres across the country taking part in RYA Push the Boat Out weekend. Whether you’re completely new to the sport, looking to get back on the water or sail regularly, you could be one of hundreds of people taking part in sailing at open days, have-a-go sessions and fun events for all the family. Starting at 10am, on
Saturday 17 May at Croft Farm there will be a morning of windsurfing tasters. At 10am on Sunday 18 May, there will be dinghy sailing tasters. STEVE’S CHALLENGE Steve Welsh is a resident at Theoc House, which is an acquired brain injury rehabilitation unit based in Tewkesbury. Steve suffered a significant brain injury at the age of 17 when he was involved in a moped accident. Although Steve faces challenges on a daily basis he has set himself a new goal. On the 12th May Steve plans to complete a mini Triathlon. This will involve Steve Pedaling, Paddling and Walking for 3hours. His walk and cycle will take place at Theoc House Gym, and his swim will be at Cascades pool, Tewkesbury. Steve is set to raise a considerable amount of money through sponsorship and has chosen to donate the money to Macmillan Cancer Support. Steve felt he would like to contribute to this worthy cause as they took such great care of his mum, Norma, who he recently lost to Pancreatic cancer. BICYCLE LIGHTS AND YOUR SAFETY The first topic I want to cover, in what I hope will be a regular column, are bicycle lights. The most obvious reason for having lights on any bicycle is for safety. With roads getting busier and accidents making the news at alarming regularity, it is always advisable to take as many precautions as possible. All too often, cyclists are travelling in the dark hours with no real awareness of the law. For starters, the lights must have the British Kite Mark. This way you can be sure of their quality and that they are adequate for the purpose. Secondly there must be a RED light at the rear
and a WHITE or YELLOW one on the front. Front and rear reflectors must also be fitted. Amber coloured pedal reflectors must be fitted on both front and rear also. Wheel reflectors are not a legal require-
ment. These regulations only apply to a bicycle that is ridden between sunset and sunrise. A bicycle ridden during the day need not have any form of lighting or reflectors. Bicycle light technology has come
into the 21st century and can be very discretely fitted, unlike the hefty objects we had to fit in the past! The Police can enforce an on the spot fine of £30 for failing to comply with the regulations or
you could even be taken to court and fined up to £1000. You need to consider that you could be found at fault if were to be involved in an accident. Keep your wits about you, look after your bike and stay safe, people!

FUND RAISING TARGET SMASHED A special coffee morning and sponsored pool marathon raised a massive £2,020.50p in aid of Leukaemia Care at the event that was held in March at Marina Court. The pool marathon lasted twelve hours and the players were tired and achy the following day. There were a number of stalls selling local produce as well as home made cake and refreshments. The cheque was presented to Fundraising Manager, Helen Whatmore for Leukaemia Care which was far in excess of the original £1,000 target that the residents had hoped to raise. Marina Court is a purpose built complex for elderly and disabled people over the age of fifty-five and is based in Mitton.

Pupils from Tewkesbury Comprehensive and Tirlebrook Primary School did an outstanding job of serving drinks and food supplied by local businesses. In recent crime trends we have unfortunately had a few incidents of rogue traders. These individuals cold call on unsuspecting members of our communities who are more often than not elderly or vulnerable. These criminals can be quite charming initially, they may tell you that work is necessary when it isn’t or even cause damage deliberately in order to ‘repair it’. These rogue traders have a variety of sales tactics such as they are working in the area and the that the offer is for a limited period only, they may trick you into agreeing with them which makes it difficult to say no. When the work has been completed the mood of the traders often changes and they can become quite threatening, demanding more cash on the pretence they have done extra work. There has been a recent incident where they even escorted an elderly person to the bank in order to withdraw cash. Here are a few golden rules, never open the door to people you don’t know or aren’t expecting. Look through a window or a door viewer if you have one. If you need work doing never engage the services of cold callers, get several written quotes from trustworthy or recommended firms. Ask family or friends who have been satisfied with work completed and if possible take a look at the workmanship yourself. Never pay any money up front for materials before the work starts and never settle in full until you are completely satisfied. If at any time you are unhappy with anyone calling at your home ask them to leave and if they refuse contact the police. If possible get any information you can such as vehicle registration numbers or descriptions of the callers but do not put yourself at risk in order to do so.
On a similar note never sell anything to cold callers. In the past there have been instances of vulnerable householders selling antiques, jewellery or military medals for way below their true value. These callers
often only want to get into your home to see if there is anything else worth stealing. The same rules apply in these circumstances only use an established antiques dealer and get more than one quotation.

Oldbury Road. Over 800 adults and children have been helped during the first year of the Foodbank’s operation, each receiving three days’ worth of emergency food supplies. Over 45 local agencies and organisations have signed up to issue Foodbank vouchers. These include GPs, social workers, teachers, charities as well as statutory agencies. This means those in need of help are identified quickly, and issued with a voucher which can be exchanged for essential food items. Food supplies have also been topped up by local supermarket collections held during the year at Tesco and Morrisons all with the generous help of shoppers who have donated food items from the Foodbank’s “shopping list.” In February the Foodbank was able to help families affected by flooding, and supplied 500Kg of emergency food aid for 45 stranded flood victims on the outskirts of Tewkesbury town centre. All those running the Foodbank are unpaid volunteers. More volunteers are always required to spread the load. FRONTLINE AND ADVANTAGE FLEA TREATMENTS for those little summer irritations
ONE ODD WEEKEND IN APRIL For a majority of the year we deal only with British wildlife – that is what we are here for after all. However, we do sometimes find ourselves looking after animals from further afield, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. I talked last month about how we brace ourselves at this time of year for all the young birds and mammals which will inevitably end up in our care during the spring and summer months. This particular weekend however, we were called upon to look after some rather more unusual casualties. The first, a very small corn snake, was brought in by the RSPCA late one Friday night. Corn snakes are probably the most commonly kept snake in the UK but they are also among the best escapologists too and they are found as strays on a fairly regular basis. The RSPCA often board them with us for a few days before moving them on to specialist rescue centres. The very next day we had a visit from the RSPCA again, this time with a terrapin that had been found in a garden in Malvern. During the late 1980’s and into the 1990’s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became extremely popular amongst children and with this came the start of a craze for having tiny terrapins as pets. Thousands and thousands of the tiny creatures, some not much
Terrapin bigger than a fifty pence piece, were imported into this country and then sold in pet shops to Ninja Turtle fans. As with most TV/film inspired crazes, the novelty eventually wears off and in this case it resulted in large numbers of these terrapins being dumped into our rivers and ponds. Many of them have survived and, although they have ended up in pretty poor health, they are still being found on a fairly regular basis. Not long after the terrapin arrived, a bluetongued skink turned up after being found in amongst a field of sheep in Bredons Hardwick, obviously either an escapee or an unwanted exotic pet that had been dumped. It turned out to be a busy exotic reptile weekend as we also received
a call about a lizard that had been found in a consignment of lettuce from abroad but for some reason it wasn’t brought in to us in the end. I have to stress that we do not normally take in anything but British
wildlife though, unless it comes in via the RSPCA for temporary boarding. Finally, I would like to remind everyone about our 30th Anniversary Open Day which is taking place on Sunday 8th June 2014, from 10am – 4pm. Local clubs excel at Taekwondo World Championships Clive Harrison's and Martin Paradine's local Taekwondo Schools have just come back from the P.U.M.A World Championships with a hat full of medals. They also claimed five new World Champions titles.
